Suspect in Molotov attack on Sam Altman's home linked to AI Discord server

A suspect attacked the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Friday.

The suspect arrested in the attack on Sam Altman's home is facing eight charges.
He participated in a Discord server for PauseAI, a group against the development of frontier AI models.
PauseAI said the suspect had "no role" in the group and condemned the attack.

The 20-year-old suspect arrested after the Molotov cocktail attack on Sam Altman's $27 million home participated in a Discord server critical of AI development.

PauseAI said the suspect, identified by several outlets as Daniel Alejandro Moreno-Gama, joined its server two years ago. The nonprofit organization is focused on temporarily pausing the development of frontier AI models — like OpenAI's GPT-5.4 — and mitigating the risks they pose.

"Violence against anyone is antithetical to everything we stand for," the statement on its website.

The organization said Moreno-Gama posted a total of 34 messages in the Discord server, though none of those messages "contained explicit calls to violence."

"He had no role in PauseAI, participated in no campaigns, attended no events, and received no support from us," the statement said. "Following news of the attack, we banned him from our server."

A moderator began removing his messages following news of the attack, but stopped when they realized they could be relevant to the investigation.

"Our Discord server is a public community space. As with any open forum, people can join freely," the statement said. "We actively moderate our channels and take enforcement seriously, as our warning to this individual demonstrates. But we cannot predict or control the actions of every person who joins a public server; no organisation can."

Authorities in San Francisco booked Moreno-Gama at 12:47 p.m. on Friday, and he's facing several charges. The charges include arson of an inhabited structure or property and attempted murder.

A San Francisco Police Department spokesperson said officers responded to a North Beach residence just after 4 a.m. local time to investigate a fire. The fire was contained to the exterior gate, and there were no injuries, according to the spokesperson.

The suspect fled the scene on foot. His description was later broadcast to all SFPD officers.

Around 5:07 a.m., officers responded to OpenAI's office, where they said a man was threatening to burn down the building. The spokesperson said officers realized the man matched the description of the person who threw the Molotov cocktail at Altman's house.

An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the attack in a statement.

"Early this morning, someone threw a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman's home and also made threats at our San Francisco headquarters. Thankfully, no one was hurt. We deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe," the OpenAI spokesperson said.

Altman responded to the incident in a blog post on Friday, featuring a photo of his husband, Oliver Mulherin, and their son.

"I empathize with anti-technology sentiments and clearly technology isn't always good for everyone. But overall, I believe technological progress can make the future unbelievably good, for your family and mine," he wrote. "While we have that debate, we should de-escalate the rhetoric and tactics and try to have fewer explosions in fewer homes, figuratively and literally."

The incident occurred about five months after OpenAI told employees at its headquarters to shelter in place due to a reported threat, which prompted a police response. The threat came from an individual linked to an anti-AI activist group.

OpenAI has become a major player in the tech scene, thrusting Altman into the global spotlight. The billionaire has met with many global leaders, including President Donald Trump, and has become an industry titan.

However, public opinion on AI has shifted since the company released ChatGPT in 2022. Concerns over how AI will affect the workforce have caused protests, and OpenAI's deal with the Pentagon drew criticism.

Tech companies spend millions of dollars to protect their founders. A SEC filing said Tesla incurred about $2.4 million in expenses for such security services in 2023 and about $0.5 million through February 2024, representing a portion of the total cost of security services related to Elon Musk. Facebook spent $20.4 million protecting CEO Mark Zuckerberg in 2019.

It's unclear how much OpenAI spends on Altman's security.

My grandma got her first iPhone after a brief health scare and became hooked on YouTube videos.
She slipped farther away from the family store, old friends, and the dinner table.
Seeing her blush at silly romance videos made me realize that she wasn't wasting time.

On the day my Taiwanese grandma A-Ma turned 80, she complained about a lingering dizziness.

When she got up from the floor mat, she fainted. Though the blackout lasted only two seconds and the doctor ruled the trigger to be temporary low blood pressure, my aunt was worried enough to dust off an old iPhone in case of an emergency.

Being illiterate, it took my grandma a full week to master punching in the four-digit passcode. I was worried during my entire visit home in Taiwan.

My cousin helped her figure out her phone

Everything changed when my 6-year-old cousin came home from kindergarten with a new obsession with Minecraft videos. Not having a phone to his name, A-ma became my cousin's easy target. He downloaded YouTube onto her phone. A thread of over-the-top romance videos popped up on my grandma's feed. She clicked on one after another.

Turns out, my grandma's taste in entertainment was 30-second dramatic YouTube Shorts with ridiculous premises filmed on a low production budget: a housekeeper starved by her boss, who eventually fell in love with her. A college senior slept with dad's best friend, who has a BDSM lair. A high school girl endured bullying, then revealed she is an heir to a kingdom. Everything that made me cringe made her giggle.

Then the effects of her phone permeated into real life. The family store she started with my grandpa in 1975 began seeing her less. Instead of stocking the shelves with my aunt in the morning, she opted for a long breakfast: two boiled eggs dipped in soy sauce with an endless side of YouTube Shorts.

The situation briefly looked up when A-ma's friend, who ran a sticky rice shop, stopped by the store with some fresh gossip. The friend brought hot-off-the-press news about a local's son and daughter. My grandma played the attentive listener, given that she did not have the skills to scour the market for scandals. Yet, not even 20 minutes in, I noticed A-ma started glancing at her phone. No longer a top-tier audience, the friend retreated to the sticky rice shop, defeated.

I noticed she was paying less attention

As a writer in New York who used my phone sparingly, I flew back to Taipei every three months to see family. Each time, I noticed her attention span suffered more than the last.

Her dining table was once the place I brought her behind-the-scenes anecdotes of working in a New York City ad agency, but not anymore. Last time we ate together, her eyes were glued to her screen. I sighed and threw my finished plates into the sink. She glanced at me, then back to her original program, completely mesmerized by the content.

Instead of being angry, I caught a glimpse of A-ma blushing from the corner of my eye. Like a girl reading a coming-of-age story, her cheeks flushed pink. Then she turned the screen toward me, relaying the plot of a cringey romance. Her smile stretched up to her eyes.

I finally understood her

That was when I realized it was not YouTube Shorts with horrible storylines she was watching. It was a window into what young adulthood could've been like if she were given the chance to be a normal girl.

As my mother told me, A-ma grew up in a war-torn time in Taiwan, where her childhood consisted of running into bunkers during air-raid drills. By 15, she was at the fishing port helping her family haul fresh catches into the local market. Years later, her parents arranged for her to marry the neighborhood boy. Then, together, they had six kids. They took a leap of faith, left the village, and set up shop in Taipei City, selling handmade beef jerky and pork floss.

Never having the chance to go to school, dress up for a party, or sneak out at night to steal a kiss from a cute boy — she didn't get to live, not like a young girl. Before anyone or herself knew, she became an adult.

I realized, 65 years later, after a brief health scare, A-ma got this iPhone that served as a portal into a world she never had access to. Filling a void she didn't know existed.

Last time I visited, I showed her how dictation works. With her callused thumb, she hit the microphone button and uttered: "Young. Stories."

However, her accent, thick with a dialect, was too much for Siri to understand. For the first time, I felt like I did.

Jim Lexa worked as a journalist for 30 years and saw his salary plummet as print journalism faded.
He quit without another job at 53, worked as a handyman, then got a job with the Postal Service.
He now earns up to $85K a year — nearly three times his old salary — and can walk 40K steps a day.

This interview is based on a conversation with Jim Lexa, 63, a letter carrier from West Seneca, New York. It has been edited for length and clarity.

I never started out in journalism because of the money. I could have earned higher wages by staying in my job straight out of college, working in the kitchen of a diner chain.

Instead, I was bitten by the writing bug as a high schooler, when I was hired by a local town newspaper in Lily Lake, Illinois, to cover all high school sports, particularly football.

Those were the years I learned basic journalism rules, such as spelling people's names correctly and getting the scores right.

I got my journalism degree and, after a brief stint working at the diner, landed a sports reporter job at a regional newspaper group in Amarillo, Texas. My salary in 1984 was $230 a week.

The popularity of newspapers dropped

It was exciting to write about teams like the Dallas Cowboys, and there was a lot more to it than game coverage. I enjoyed meeting people and telling their stories.

In 1998, I moved to the copy desk, where my responsibilities included clearing the front page and assigning tasks.

Then the popularity of newspapers began to dwindle. Circulation dropped. The publishers stopped hiring people, and you'd see offices being closed off. Then came the pay cuts.

Management always said they were for the good of the company. Still, when my $37,500 annual base salary was reduced to $30,000, I started to seriously worry.

I'd go to the grocery store with a calculator to figure out what kind of food I could afford. If one of my pets got sick, I'd be concerned about paying the vet bills.

By early 2015, I was feeling burned out. Constantly meeting deadlines and filling the pages was getting to me. The stress wasn't worth the amount I was paid.

I took a deep breath and quit, moving to DeKalb, Illinois, where I did handyman, painting, and cleaning work.

I was promoted within 2 years

Still, I felt like I needed a proper, new direction. It felt late in the game to make a career change at 53, but I heard they were hiring at the post office and was hired in November 2015.

My entry-level job as a clerk was the brief stepping stone to becoming a city carrier assistant in January 2016. About two years later, I was promoted to letter carrier after I moved to Buffalo, New York.

You have a few days' training, and then you're out on your own, which was scary. At first, I'd spend ages poring over maps, but as time passed, I got to know my routes well.

In my current position, I earn $34.26 per hour, with overtime at time-and-a-half after eight hours and double time after 10 hours. During COVID, I was putting in 60 hours a week.

This past year, I topped $85,000 — nearly three times as much as my base salary in newspapers. My wife and I don't have to worry about dining out, and we enjoy nice vacations together.

I'm much less stressed

One of the best things to come out of all this is feeling the fittest I've ever been. I use a postal vehicle, but I walk 12 to 18 miles a day. If it's just my route, it's probably around 30,000 steps daily.

During the winter, when it's really snowy, and I get a lot of overtime, I can get in as many as 40,000 steps. I'm 5'8" tall and weigh 160 pounds.

I'm so glad that I made the switch. I've got a decent salary with less stress, good benefits, a friendly relationship with my regular customers, and a spring in my step at 63.

Anthropic is close to overtaking OpenAI on this measure of AI business spending

US businesses that integrate AI have tended to choose OpenAI.
However, Anthropic has seen business spending surge in recent months, according to Ramp's index.
Anthropic's reputation got an unexpected boost after it challenged a deal with the Pentagon.

Anthropic is close to passing OpenAI when it comes to business spending on AI, according to new data.

Ramp, a finance automation and corporate card issuer, said half of its customers now pay for AI products. Among those customers, 30.6% use Anthropic, up 6.3% from March.

The gap between Anthropic and OpenAI, which accounts for 35.2% of customers, has narrowed dramatically, according to Ramp.

"At the current pace, Anthropic is on track to surpass OpenAI within the next two months," a Ramp spokesperson told Business Insider. "It already leads among early adopters, including VC-backed companies, and in key sectors like software, finance, and professional services."

Anthropic currently leads OpenAI in three specific sectors: information, finance and insurance, and personal services. Ramp's data only provides a snapshot of spending by that company's customers. However, it's a useful yardstick for how business adoption of AI is changing over time.

Advancements in AI have begun to transform several industries. Major companies, including Meta, Microsoft and Visa, have encouraged employees to adopt the tech into their day-to-day work.

Anthropic's Claude Code has been a huge hit with software engineers and developers, which is likely one of the main drivers behind business spending on the startup's technology. The company also has top-performing models, according to benchmarking specialist Arena.ai. That likely influences which AI technology businesses choose.

Data from Ramp showed that funding is a key predictor of whether a business adopts AI. VC-backed businesses have a 80% adoption rate, while companies backed by private-equity firms have a 64% adoption rate. Companies without either have a 45% adoption rate.

Although Ramp didn't provide a specific reason for Anthropic's surge among corporations, the company received an unexpected reputation boost in February when it challenged a deal with the Pentagon. That month, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth urged the company to agree with the military's terms of use for Claude or be blacklisted by the government.

Anthropic refused, resulting in President Donald Trump telling federal agencies to stop using the tech and the Department of Defense designating Anthropic as a supply chain risk. OpenAI stepped in to offer its services to the Department of Defense.

In response, some users rallied around Anthropic. Claude temporarily surpassed ChatGPT on the App Store, and major tech companies like Microsoft showed support.

Nike's soccer shirts to be worn by players at the FIFA World Cup appear to have a design issue.
Material was seen bulging at the shoulders of footballers in recent international matches.
The issue was raised on X by a sports journalist. Fans have complained about their version of the shirts.

With just two months to go before the FIFA World Cup kicks off, design issues have emerged with the Nike shirts to be worn by several teams in the tournament, including the USA and Canada.

Soccer's biggest event, hosted jointly by the US, Canada and Mexico, gets underway on June 11 with the opening match in Mexico City.

During international matches played since Nike unveiled its World Cup kits on March 16, several soccer players were seen with shirts bulging at the shoulder.

Prominent Spanish football journalist Alejandro Mendo raised the issue with his 14.6 million followers on X.

"You've all seen the unwanted shoulder pads on the Nike shirts for the World Cup," he said. "What seemed like a minor aesthetic detail has turned into a global controversy."

Sharing images of international players with bulging material at the shoulders, Mendo added: "Nike acknowledges the problem. These aren't isolated cases, but something structural in the design."

Soccer fans have also reported similar issues with their versions of the shirt, with one posting on Reddit: "Its actually a complete joke."

Showing off his Canada shirt, the fan added: "The way the shoulders are sewn together just make them bunch like this no matter what. This is a stupid, STUPID design."

Business Insider contacted Nike for comment and didn't get a response on Saturday.

Some 48 teams have qualified for the tournament, the highest number in its history. The final takes place at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19.

It's extremely powerful. Its spray distance was long. The high pressure and long spray distance are a great combo for attacking dirty surfaces from afar.

We also loved the solid brass construction. It's resistant to rust and all-around durable, plus it looks sleek.

We recommend using the longer nozzle. This product comes with two nozzles, a long one and a much smaller one. We wouldn't recommend the small tip nozzle, as it wasn't adjustable and couldn't shut off the water flow. It offered medium pressure and a very narrow spray, so we're not sure what the use of this extra nozzle is. Stick with the long nozzle, and you'll be set.

Best ergonomic

Thumb control nozzles are ergonomic and comfortable to hold. I'm used to a traditional hose nozzle, which requires gripping with your thumb or fingers. But the Husky Pro Thumb Control Nozzle employs a switch that you move up or down with your thumb to operate, making it more comfortable to hold and reducing hand fatigue. A garden hose nozzle with thumb controls is especially useful if you have chronic pain or have declined motor control functions. It's especially powerful. I have pretty low water pressure, so I was impressed with how powerful the Husky nozzle was. Even the lower settings, like the shower and mist, were high-pressure and traveled farther than other nozzles I tried on the jet setting.

The rubber exterior is durable. The Bon-Aire is bulkier and more durable than the Twinkle Star nozzle, our high-pressure pick. Since most of it is encased in rubber, the metal middle section rarely touches the ground. It simply bounces around if you drop it on the ground from a tall height.

It has limited spray options. There are a few different nozzle styles to consider that have different purposes and ways to operate. If you plan on using your hose for various tasks, John Jors, a Florida Master Gardener and volunteer groundskeeper at the 35-acre Bonnet House Museum and Gardens, recommends a pistol grip nozzle with multiple spray options and adjustable water pressure.

But if you have trouble holding a pistol grip for long periods, fire hose-style and watering wands are good alternatives.

Pistol grip nozzle: Features a trigger that controls the amount or flow of water. Hold down the trigger (which may be in front of or behind the handle) to release water. The harder you press, the more water comes out.
Dial nozzle: Features a rotating dial of distinct spray patterns. It's often combined with a pistol grip so you only need to hold down the trigger to activate the flow of water, while the dial setting controls the specific flow.
Watering wand or rain wand: A long nozzle that helps extend water flow to hard-to-reach areas. It's usually controlled with a comfortable sliding thumb control.
Firehose (or fireman)-style nozzle: A large dial-style nozzle that does not have a pistol grip. The spray patterns are not distinct and must be gradually adjusted.

Our testing methodology

We put all the hose nozzles through these same five tests. We completed testing in two rounds. During the first round, we tested using our best hose overall, the Dramm ColorStorm Garden Hose. For the second round of testing, we used our lightweight pick, the Teknor Apex Zero-G.

Ease of use: We noted how easy or difficult it was to attach to the hose, how many spray options it had, and whether it leaked.
Comfort: We noted if the grip was ergonomic. If the nozzle had a pistol grip design, we timed how long we could press the grip down before it got too tiring to press.
Spray distance: On concrete, we measured how far the nozzle sprayed water when holding the hose at a regular position (a foot away from the body).
Water pressure: We measured the water pressure from the nozzle with a water pressure gauge. If there was more than one spray setting, we measured the low, medium, and high settings.
Durability: We dropped each nozzle on concrete from 10 feet high 10 times and noted scuffing, scratches, abrasion, and any broken or bent parts. We also left the nozzles outside for two consecutive weeks through various weather conditions, including sun and rain, noting any rust and other signs of wear and tear.

Ukrainian forces shot down Iranian Shahed drones in the Middle East, the country's president said, as countries turn to Ukrainian expertise in counter-drone warfare.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told reporters this week that Ukrainian personnel have shot down drones in multiple countries as Ukraine looks to help friendly nations now seeking Ukrainian knowledge amid Iranian attacks resembling the Russian ones Ukraine has been fighting for years.

"Did we shoot things down? Yes, we did. Did we shoot them down in one country? No, in several," Zelensky said during a closed-door briefing, according to a report from the local media outlet Kyiv Post.

He said that Ukrainian forces took part in operations using domestically made interceptor drones, a technology that Ukraine has pioneered to stop Russian drone attacks and that partners are now deeply interested in acquiring.

Ukraine has been able to offer guidance to partner countries on strengthening their existing air defense networks and participate in active operations.

Russia's Shahed drones are a huge problem for Ukraine.

"This was not about a training mission or exercises, but about support in building a modern air defense system that can actually work," Zelenskyy said. He said that Ukrainian forces were also able to defeat jet-powered drones.

A fragile two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran went into effect on Tuesday, but over the five weeks prior, Iranian forces facing bombardments by the US and Israel launched numerous missiles and Shahed one-way attack drones at countries across the Middle East. Deeply familiar with this threat, Ukraine was quick to offer support and assistance.

Iran's Shahed drone is a loitering munition that carries a deadly explosive payload. Russia has used this weapon against Ukraine, as well as a domestically developed version, the Geran.

Zelenskyy did not say which countries his forces helped or which interceptor drones were used.

A number of interceptor drone companies, including Ukrainian firms and foreign companies that make interceptor drones used by Ukrainian forces, have told Business Insider that they've seen a surge in interest since the war with Iran began in late February.

The US and its Middle East allies have advanced air defenses, but drone warfare is exposing a cost problem. Ukraine's cheaper, scalable interceptors are proving critical: a Shahed drone can cost around $50,000, while a Patriot PAC-3 interceptor is about $3.7 million. Using high-end missiles to shoot down low-cost drones isn't sustainable.

Adversaries can send waves of cheaper drones in an attempt to exhaust traditional air defenses. But most interceptors in Ukraine are sold for around $6,000 or less, changing the cost dynamic entirely.

Ukraine has been keen to help friendly partner nations in the Middle East struggling with this challenge, including by sending drone warfare experts to the region. Zelesnkyy said last month that multiple countries had asked for help, and that Ukraine could supply partners with at least 1,000 interceptor drones a day if they helped with funding their production.

He called Ukraine's approach "far more cost-effective than anything our partners use today."

Helping partner countries serves Ukraine's interests as it seeks deeper military integration with allies and continued support against Russia. Ukrainian companies and troops also frame it as payback — a way to return the help they've received.

Zelenskyy said this week that in return, Ukraine is receiving weapons to help defend its energy infrastructure from Russian strikes, along with oil, diesel, and additional financial support, the Associated Press reported.

"We are helping strengthen their security in exchange for contributions to our country's resilience," he said. "This is far more than simply receiving money."

Zelenskyy said last month that with cooperation and investment, Ukraine can help a host of nations: "If a 'Shahed' needs to be stopped in the Emirates, we can do it. If it needs to be stopped in Europe or the United Kingdom, we can do it."

SpaceX's Starlink might get cheaper and faster thanks to a set of new rules, but not everyone is happy about them.

On Apr. 30, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is voting on an order (via PCMag) that will change how older, geostationary satellite systems share radio spectrum with low-Earth orbit constellations (such as Starlink).

Per current rules, the amount of energy satellite systems can transmit to and from ground equipment is pretty limited for low-Earth orbit systems, in order to protect the higher-orbiting systems. But the new proposal will loosen these rules and let the operators of various satellite systems reach private agreements on how they share radio spectrum.

This would enable Starlink and similar systems to use more satellites in a geographic area, resulting in faster internet speeds there. Conversely, an operator would be able to use a higher power level per satellite, thus delivering the same internet speeds with fewer satellites in a given area, which could reduce costs.

SpaceX, whose Starlink is actually mentioned in a footnote of the text, lobbied for this change, which led the FCC to consider changing these rules. Both SpaceX's Starlink and Amazon's Leo systems have already received a temporary approval to exceed the current power limits, but the new proposal, if approved, would make this permanent.

Not everyone is happy about the proposal, though. For example, satellite TV company DirecTV previously said its service could face disruptions if SpaceX is allowed to increase Starlink radio emission levels.

New Congressional scam alert issued for IRS fraud ahead of Tax Day

Tax Day is nearly here, and with it comes tax scams. The U.S. Congressional Joint Economic Committee has issued a scam alert, with less than a week to go until the tax filing deadline. The warning is, unfortunately, needed, given that nearly one in four Americans have reported being victimized by tax season scams, according to March 2026 research by McAfee.

The alert, seen by Mashable, has other alarming findings: During fiscal year 2025, the IRS reported more than 600 social media impersonators of the agency. Spam blocker app Nomorobo found a 400 percent increase in fraudulent calls claiming to be from the IRS between Jan. and Feb. this year. Fake tax websites are also on the rise, with McAfee identifying 43 new ones every day between Sept. 2025 and Feb. 2026.

"Criminal enterprises are exploiting tax season to target Americans, including seniors," said Joint Economic Committee Chairman and Arizona Rep. David Schweikert in a press release shared with Mashable. Adults 70 years old and older lost more money to fraud than younger adults, according to the median of data collected by the Federal Trade Commission in 2024: $1,650 for seniors 80 and older and $1,000 for 70-79 year-olds, compared to $189-691 for younger groups.

Schweikert is issuing the alert, along with Ranking Member New Hampshire Sen. Maggie Hassan, Vice Chairman Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt, and Senior House Democrat Virginia Rep. Don Beyer.

"As Americans file their taxes this month, scammers are deploying an onslaught of attacks — often enhanced by artificial intelligence — designed to steal people's money," Hassan stated in the release. "I encourage all taxpayers to review the tips in this bipartisan scams alert so that they can stay vigilant and protect their identities and accounts."

Here are tips the Joint Economic Committee lays out to avoid common IRS impersonation scams:

Be wary of phone calls, emails, or social media outreach. The IRS will never message you on social media! The agency will almost always initiate contact by mail, according to the committee.
Watch out for urgent requests or threats. The IRS will never threaten to call law enforcement or request to see your driver's license. On that note, the agency will never ask for payment via nontraditional methods such as gift cards.
You can verify any communications with the IRS directly on the official IRS.gov website.
You can share an IRS-issued identity protection PIN instead of your Social Security Number.

The committee also urges precaution when dealing with third-party tax services. Here are some tips for identifying non-IRS tax scams:

Research firms by searching them on sites like the Better Business Bureau. If an offer seems too good to be true, it often is.
Go to IRS.gov and verify the service's Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). If the service doesn't provide this, avoid it.
Scammers may pretend to be legitimate third-party tax preparation companies or employees. Verify the provider by visiting the official website and calling the listed phone number.

Dimon said avoiding decisions on Fridays is a key career lesson he has "learned and relearned."
He said purpose — not happiness — is what really drives success in work and life.

Thinking about making a big decision at the end of a long week? JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon says it's worth waiting.

"Making big decisions on a Friday when you're tired is a really bad idea," Dimon said in an interview with NPR's "Newsmakers" on Tuesday.

Dimon shared that insight during an answer about what he wished he knew earlier in life, after nearly 22 years running the world's largest bank by market capitalization, and after he turned 70 last month.

Thomas Roulet, a professor of organizational sociology and leadership at the University of Cambridge, told Business Insider that Dimon is correct about the dangers of "decision fatigue."

"As a CEO, if you have taken decisions throughout the week without time to recharge, cognitive resources — a CEO's ability to juggle and process all information they have to make the right decision — are depleted by Friday," Roulet said.

A CEO might also be "in a rush to make a decision because of the end of the week approaching, which can mean lacking all information to make the right decision or lacking time to consult the right people," he added.

During the interview, Dimon pointed to emotional discipline as another key leadership skill.

"Anger doesn't help," he said, describing the kinds of habits that can quietly undermine judgment.

He framed these insights as lessons "learned and relearned" over time.

"I still make some of those mistakes, unfortunately," Dimon said.

Have a 'purpose in life'

Dimon said he was raised to "have a purpose in life, treat everyone well, do the best you can, leave the world a better place," and "that hasn't changed."

He also pointed to his latest annual letter to shareholders, released Monday, which highlights the USA's upcoming 250th anniversary as a moment to "rededicate ourselves to the values that made this great nation of ours — freedom, liberty, and opportunity."

In the interview, Dimon said the meaning of happiness in the phrase "the pursuit of happiness" from the US Declaration of Independence is often misunderstood.

"When they said the pursuit of happiness, they didn't mean happiness like we mean happiness," he said, but rather "purpose."

Dimon said the idea of purpose can take many forms — from business and politics to everyday life.

"That purpose could be an artist, politician, reporter, you know, business person," he said. "You could be just a caregiver, a mother."

He recalled reading an op-ed about a Medal of Honor recipient who, decades later, came to see that the real heroes were those who quietly helped others every day — though he did not specify which piece he was referring to.

"They never gave up, and they did it through health and sickness and things like that," Dimon said.

"So that's the purpose. You made the world a better place in the way you can contribute," he added.

As someone who regularly shops at Dollar Tree for items my family uses frequently, there are a few things I never buy from the discount chain.

I buy some great products at Dollar Tree, but there are things I don't like to get at the chain.
The trash bags and plastic storage bags at the chain have not impressed me much.
I'd rather spend a little more to get higher-quality tools, kitchen gadgets, and candles.

As a mom of two teenagers, I try to stress to my kids that it's never a bad idea to save money where you can.

One way I've done so is by shopping at the discount chain Dollar Tree for the past two decades. It's been my favorite place to grab household essentials at low prices.

I've been happy with spices, batteries, face masks, and other basics I've purchased there for $1.25 or $1.50 — way less than I've paid at other big-box stores.

However, there are a few Dollar Tree items I've found to be not worth my time or money. As a frequent shopper, here are a few things I don't buy from the discount chain.

I'd rather get my candles elsewhere.

I enjoy burning scented candles in my home, but I've found that the ones sold at Dollar Tree are just OK.

In my experience, Dollar Tree's candles smell great in the store but don't seem to emit much fragrance when lit at home. They can also burn very quickly.

I'd rather spend a few more dollars to get a better-quality candle from somewhere else, like Target or Aldi.

Although I skip the chain's plastic toys, Dollar Tree has some great activity options for kids.

My kids may be teenagers now, but I remember all too well when they were small, and they'd ask to get a toy on our Dollar Tree shopping trips.

My answer was no if they were looking at the toy section filled with flimsy plastic items that didn't seem designed to last more than a few weeks.

Instead, I'd direct my kids to pick out something else from the discount chain, like craft supplies, sidewalk chalk, modeling clay, or coloring books.

Dollar Tree has a great selection of these items, which encourage kids to use their creativity and are less likely to end up in the donation bin after a week.

In my experience, tools are worth investing in.

Over the years, I've purchased screwdrivers, pliers, and other tools at Dollar Tree that broke after a few uses or in the middle of a DIY project.

Although the prices here are tempting upfront, I'd rather invest in more expensive, built-to-last tools I can use for years to come.

Still, some of the chain's hardware section is worth checking out. I've been happy with the nails, screws, and stick-on wall hooks I've bought at Dollar Tree.

The garbage bags have not impressed me.

With a house full of teenagers and pets, I need durable garbage bags that'll make it from our kitchen to our outdoor trash area without making a mess.

Sadly, the trash bags I've purchased at Dollar Tree have not held up as well as pricier ones from more recognizable brands. I'd rather spend a few more dollars on trash bags so I can worry less about potential rips and holes.

The disposable plastic storage bags aren't for me, either.

Whether we're packing snacks for a trip or storing dinner leftovers, our family needs our plastic bags to be sturdy and really reliable. So, I skip the ones at Dollar Tree.

Despite the tempting price, I find they can rip quite easily, and, if they have seals, they don't hold very well.

I'll skip most of the kitchen gadgets and utensils.

I've stopped buying knives, flatware, and kitchen tools at Dollar Tree. Many of the ones I've tried have been more flimsy than I'd prefer, and some have bent or broken during use.

That said, these budget-friendly options can be great if you're looking for somewhat disposable kitchen items that can be tossed after a few uses — maybe basics for an outdoor cooking area or to keep by the grill.

The food-storage containers haven't lived up to my expectations.

I'm a big fan of buying food storage containers that are inexpensive, lightweight, and easy to replace if they get lost. After all, I have two teens and a husband who use these to take meals out into the world almost daily.

Unfortunately, the ones I've tried from Dollar Tree haven't met my expectations. In my opinion, they crack pretty easily and just don't feel as high-quality as low-cost options I've bought at stores like Target or Walmart.

I'd rather purchase my paper goods elsewhere.

Paper goods are essential in any household, from sturdy paper towels to clean up kitchen messes to soft tissues for cold and flu season.

Dollar Tree has many options, but offerings I've tried from the chain have let me down so far, from too-thin toilet paper to tissues that feel scratchy on the nose.

I prefer to purchase my paper goods elsewhere and stick with my family's tried-and-true labels. By buying in bulk or looking for sales, I can often find paper towels and other basics at comparable prices anyway.

These are the brand's first foray into headphones and Sonos basically aced it. Released in spring 2024 after three years in the making, the Sonos Ace headphones are a sight for sore eyes. Beyond looks, though, they offer incredible sound quality, great spatial audio, and an impressive 30-hour battery life with noise cancellation turned on. Mashable's tester Miller Kern also noted, "No exaggeration, these are the most comfortable over-ear headphones I’ve personally tried."

Kern's biggest complaints about the headphones were the ear cup seal (it could be tighter) and the steep price, which originally was $449. The brand knocked the list price down to $399 last summer, making them a little more palatable. Now with an extra $100 savings, they're actually a solid deal.

Nintendo offers savings with new Switch 2 Super Mario Galaxy bundle

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has not been especially well received by critics, but it is serving one important purpose: introducing new people to the two excellent games it was named after. And for a limited time, you can get in on the fun with a discount.

Nintendo announced a temporary promotion from April 12 to May 9: anyone who buys a Nintendo Switch 2 console alongside Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 (the official name of a package containing both games) will get $20 off. This offer works with either the physical or digital version of the Galaxy games, but only if you get a Switch 2 at the same time. You also need to buy them from a participating retailer, which includes Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Target, and GameStop.

If my math is right, participating in this promotion would cost a total of $500 between the Switch 2 and the games, down from a total of $520 before taxes. It's not a huge discount, in other words, but considering how infrequently Nintendo discounts any of its products, especially the Switch 2, this might be a decent excuse for someone to pull the trigger on a Switch 2. Especially if they have kids who loved the Galaxy movie — or if you've been dying to get in on the Pokémon Pokopia craze.

While the movie seems like it's not great, I can personally confirm that both Galaxy games are fantastic and look exceptional running in 4K on a Switch 2.

They're some of the best modern Super Mario adventures and are absolutely worth the time of anyone even remotely curious about them. Head to a retailer near you starting on April 12 to experience greatness.

Just shy of a month old, the new Apple MacBook Air officially has its biggest discount to date. Yes, it's now even cheaper than it was during Amazon's Big Spring Sale, which just wrapped up last week.

As of April 6, both the 13-inch and 15-inch M5 MacBook Airs are $149.01 off their list prices of $1,099 and $1,299, bringing the starting prices down to just $949.99 or $1,149.99. That's $100 cheaper than both models were during the Spring Sale. Not to mention, both base models are already technically $100 cheaper than their predecessors, making this an even better value. Both base models feature 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

TBH, the M5 MacBook Air isn't a whole lot different than the M4 Air, but that's not a bad thing. Both laptops are incredibly powerful and competitively priced. Besides the M5 chip being a step up from the M4, they now start with more base storage, are configurable with up to 4TB (up from 2TB), and feature Apple's N1 wireless chip for WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support. Otherwise, the specs are largely comparable to the previous generation. The M5 Air still packs a 60Hz Liquid Retina display, 12MP Center Stage webcam, dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, and 18-hour battery life.

If you already own an M4 Air, there's not a huge incentive here to upgrade. But if you're rocking an older MacBook, I highly recommend grabbing the M5 model in either size while it's $149 cheaper. Prime members are eligible to save 20¢ per gallon when refueling on every Friday through May 29. You'll need to swing by any bp, Amoco, or a participating ampm or Thorntons to get the savings. First, you'll need to link your Amazon Prime account in the Earnify app and enter your phone number. After that, you'll be able to use the app to save 20¢ per gallon once every Friday. If you need to refuel any other day of the week, you'll get 10¢ off per gallon as a Prime member.

A Prime membership comes with plenty of perks. Throughout the year, members get special access to sales, discounts, free books, two-day shipping, streaming privileges on Prime Video, and more. Added to the list is now saving save 20¢ per gallon when filling up the gas tank on Fridays until the end of May.

Keep in mind this is valid only for U.S. Prime members and you can only use the discount once every Friday, so you won't be able to fuel up vehicles for the entire family. Amazon mentions 7,500 gas stations are participating in this deal, so there should be one fairly nearby your home.

I never cared about Easter. Now that my kids are all grown up, it's the easier holiday for them to come home.

I used to focus on Christmas, but it became complicated as my kids grew up.
I stopped competing for holiday time and chose Easter as our new tradition.
Now I host a low-pressure Easter and let go of expectations around Christmas.

I have never cared about Easter as a holiday. Not just because I'm not religious, although I suppose that's probably part of it.

Historically, Easter has not made sense to me, especially as a mom. Am I buying presents? Chocolate? Decorating the house? Am I wearing that pastel sundress my algorithm is aggressively trying to sell me, even though it's still 50 degrees outside? Why is a rabbit delivering eggs, and why is he hiding them?

I ignored Easter

These were minor irritations for younger me. The single mom raising four boys in a small town. I was the custodial parent and the holiday-maker.

When I was this mom, I had the privilege of deciding against Easter as a holiday because, let's face it, I got to decide all of the holidays and every other day of the year. When I was this mom, I could afford to give Easter the cold shoulder in favor of Christmas. The Big Show. The main event.

I made a real meal out of Christmas, throwing myself into wringing every last magical moment out of the holiday. I baked their favorite cookies. I bought them holiday pajamas. I hosted their friends for parties. Decorated the tree with them, wrapped gifts with them, watched movies with them, sang carols with them.

That was before. Now I'm a new kind of mom. A mom of adult sons.

They have other plans now that they are adults

I am realizing that I've spent the past few years fighting to get that Christmas back. Auditioning to be on the main stage of Christmas even though we all know I'm more of a benevolent bystander in my sons' lives these days.

I've watched them do their best to include me in their holidays. I've watched them try to navigate Christmas with their partners and their partners' families, their dad and their friends, and their work, and even just try to find a moment for themselves. It's a lot. It's too much,

And even though I know they're trying so hard to wedge me in where they can, I inevitably get my feelings hurt or just get lonely or maudlin or stop being any fun at all.

The thing is, I like to be fun. It's fun to be fun. So I'm changing the game.

I'm making Easter our holiday together

This year I'm taking over Easter. No one else seems to want Easter for all the reasons I've already mentioned. It's ripe for the picking. I'm going to become the default Easter mom everyone's dreams of.

I am going to drive to the city where they live, and we will eat together. A big brunch of all our favorites, either at a restaurant or I'll cook in someone's home. I'm letting my sons pick. We are planning an afternoon movie at a cool little art-house cinema, where we will eat our Easter chocolate, then go for drinks afterward to discuss. We will order several plates of table fries and pick at them together. We'll go back to my son's house for board games in the evening. Eat more food. This will be our new thing. This will be my new thing.

I fought Easter for so long, and now? Now I'm excited. I'm excited to make life easier for my adult kids, to take one small pressure off their backs when their lives are exactly as full and great as I always hoped they would be. I'm excited to redefine Easter weekend as a relaxed, easy break. No gifts, no expectations, no decorations, no pressure.

And when Christmas comes around, I'm going to just let it go. Maybe even try something new and go away for a little holiday all my own. Because I've already had my perfect holiday with my kids.

I'm the new default Easter mom. Why didn't I think of this sooner?

In my testing, the performance felt deep and expansive, with a sound field that stretches well beyond the bar's physical footprint. The results are genuinely impressive and stack up well against other high-end Atmos soundbars, such as the Sonos Arc.

One of the standout upgrades over Bose's cheaper options is the inclusion of ADAPTiQ calibration. This system fine-tunes the sound to match your room, making a noticeable difference in challenging spaces or areas with unconventional furniture layouts. Just note that you'll need to use the included wired headset to run the calibration.

If you're already invested in the Bose ecosystem, the Ultra Soundbar has another perk: private listening support with compatible Bose headphones and earbuds. You can group them with the bar for late-night viewing without disturbing anyone. Like the Smart Soundbar, this model also features Bose's AI Dialogue Mode, which enhances voice clarity when you struggle to hear dialogue over music and effects.

For music, the Ultra supports WiFi, Bluetooth, AirPlay, Chromecast, and Spotify Connect, providing you with numerous wireless options for streaming. Amazon Alexa is also built in, so the soundbar doubles as a smart speaker for voice commands. And unlike Bose's other models, which only come in black, the Ultra is also available in white — a nice touch for anyone who wants their home theater setup to match their décor.

Best for smaller spaces

The Bose TV Speaker is the brand's most compact and affordable soundbar. It's under two feet in length and just over two inches tall, making it the best Bose soundbar for smaller spaces, such as an apartment. Despite knowing its dimensions, I was still surprised by how compact the unit appeared in person.

Though it delivers less rumble and a lower max volume than Bose's larger models, don't let the TV Speaker's small size deceive you. This compact two-channel soundbar is still capable of producing compelling audio via three speaker drivers.

Although the TV Speaker doesn't have the same bass level or dynamic range as other Bose soundbars, it still delivers a significant upgrade to the speakers built into my Samsung smart TV. During testing, the dialogue was clearer, and the overall sound was more evenly balanced. The TV Speaker compares favorably to the Sonos Ray, a similar option that earned a spot in our guide to the best budget soundbars. The TV Speaker is a good alternative to the Ray for people who prefer the Bose brand.

That said, this isn't the best Bose soundbar to pick if you crave advanced features and big sound for larger spaces. There's no Dolby Atmos support or WiFI connectivity, for instance. However, it does support Bluetooth, so you can use it to play music from your phone. However, please note that while the TV Speaker supports connecting to a display via HDMI ARC, an HDMI cable isn't included in the box. It comes with an optical cable instead. Best add-on

Bose offers several add-ons for its soundbars, including subwoofers and rear surround speakers. These products can all meaningfully enhance your audio experience, but I recommend starting with the Bose Bass Module 500 if you're looking for an initial upgrade.

This wireless subwoofer offers a significant improvement in deep low-frequency performance, making movies rumble and adding depth to music. The Bass Module 500 is compatible with all of the best Bose soundbars. Even if you're short on space, the subwoofer connects wirelessly, allowing it to be placed anywhere in the room (though it requires a power outlet for connection).

Bose also sells a larger Bass Module 700, which offers extra oomph and power, but the more modest 500 unit is no slouch. It greatly enhances the low-end impact of movies when paired with Bose's smaller TV Speaker and Smart Soundbar, and it even adds noticeable bass to the larger Ultra Soundbar.

If you're looking for more powerful low-end kick from your Bose soundbar system, this is a worthwhile upgrade to consider.

Do Bose soundbars support Dolby Atmos?

Both the Bose Smart Soundbar and the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar support Dolby Atmos immersive audio. Dolby Atmos is a surround sound format that uses object-based mixing to spread audio effects in all directions, including above your head. Bose's soundbars use up-firing speaker drivers to bounce audio off the ceiling and back down to your ears.

Can Bose soundbars play DTS audio?

The Bose soundbars in this guide do not support DTS. Instead, they support Dolby and PCM audio formats. This shouldn't be an issue for most people, as Dolby is the most commonly used format on streaming services and live TV providers.

However, some Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray discs have DTS audio mixes. To hear those tracks on a Bose soundbar, you'll need to change your Blu-ray player output settings to PCM.

What other audio devices does Bose sell?

Is Bose better than Sonos?

The best Sonos soundbars compare well to Bose's top offerings as both lineups offer similar features and capabilities. However, we do give a slight edge to certain options over others.

For those who want premium Dolby Atmos performance, the Sonos Arc Ultra is a more robust device than the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar, thanks to Sonos' beefier built-in woofer system.

However, the midrange Bose Smart Soundbar has a big edge over the competing Sonos Beam. Bose's device features up-firing audio drivers to provide Dolby Atmos height effects, whereas Sonos relies solely on audio processing, which is less effective.

On the low end, the budget-friendly Bose TV Speaker and Sonos Ray are extremely similar, with only small differences. We appreciate that the Bose TV Speaker has an HDMI port, which the Ray lacks. On the other hand, the Sonos Ray supports WiFi, while the Bose TV Speaker only has Bluetooth connectivity.

You can put together a wireless multi-room audio system with speakers from either brand, but you can't mix and match them. Sonos speakers are compatible only with other Sonos devices, and Bose speakers are compatible only with other Bose models. As such, we suggest picking one brand and sticking with it.

Netflix must refund customers for price hikes, Italian court rules

While Netflix prices seem to keep rising in the United States, the streaming giant may have to reverse that trend in Italy.

On Friday, a Rome court ruled that Netflix's price increases over the last seven years were unlawful, and that the streamer must refund its Italian customers, Reuters reported. Netflix apparently violated Italy's Consumer Code by changing the subscription price without a valid reason. Specifically, the ruling states that Netflix breached this code in 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2024, according to Euro News.

Each subscriber will be entitled to a reduction in their current subscription price and reimbursement of applicable past charges. Some customers could even get further compensation, Reuters reported.

Netflix told Reuters it will appeal the decision, and "We take consumer rights very seriously and believe our terms have always complied with Italian laws and practice."

The lawsuit was originally filed by consumer group Movimento Consumatori, or Consumer Movement. In a press release on Saturday, the group responded to Netflix's statement.

"If Netflix intends to put the rights of its subscribers and consumers before all other interests, it should respect the Rome Court ruling and provide refunds, thus saving itself from massive class-action and individual litigation that will last years, damaging its reputation and resulting trust," said Movimento Consumatori president Alessandro Mostaccio in a translated statement.

According to Mostaccio, over 25,000 Italian Netflix consumers have contacted Movimento Consumatori about the price hikes.

Movimento Consumatori's lawyers for the case, Paolo Fiorio and Corrado Pinna, stated, "It is surprising that Netflix defends its actions as compliant not only with the law but also with Italian market practices," in a translated statement. "In Europe and in Italy, market practices cannot derogate from the law, which, as the Court found, were violated by Netflix, which implemented unlawful price increases."

An Animorphs series is on its way to Disney+ thanks to Ryan Coogler

Animorphs, the sci-fi YA series with the greatest, most cursed book covers ever, is headed to Disney+.

As reported by Variety, the streamer is developing an Animorphs TV show. Bayan Wolcott (The Testaments, The Summer I Turned Pretty) is set to write and executive produce the series, and Oscar winner Ryan Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Zinzi Coogler are executive producing through Proximity Media.

Based on the series co-written by Katherine Applegate and her husband Michael Grant, Animorphs follows a group of teenagers who stumble across a powerful alien technology. It allows them to morph into different animals, but it also thrusts them into a galactic war between the Andalites and the parasitic Yeerks. As the Yeerks begin a stealthy invasion of Earth, it's up to Animorphs Jake, Rachel, Tobias, Cassie, and Marco — along with Andalite ally Ax — to rebel and save the world.

There are 54 books in the primary Animorphs series, along with eight companion novels that enrich the world's lore. There is also already an Animorphs TV show, one that ran on Nickelodeon for 26 episodes between 1998 and 2000.

Obviously, 26 episodes is not enough to get through 62 books' worth of plot, so there's still so much more Animorphs glory to explore. And Disney+, you'd better listen to me when I say I need all of it. I need the grotesque animal transformations, I need them to look as messed-up as they do on the book covers, and I need the show to lean into the darkness of the books. That means including the many war crimes these teens commit — never forget the instant maple and ginger oatmeal! — as well as the psychological toll they take.
