More than two dozen companies have laid off employees so far in 2026, continuing the trend of significant workforce reductions across a broad range of industries, including tech, media, finance, and retail.

Some, including Block and Coinbase, have cited the impact of artificial intelligence as a key reason for the layoffs.

Target, meanwhile, is shifting resources from its supply chain into stores as part of the new CEO's turnaround strategy to improve the shopping experience and return to growth.

More than 100 other companies, from Amazon to Nike to Verizon, have filed legally mandated WARN notices about job cuts to come in 2026, according to WARN Tracker. Some of the cuts are part of previously announced reductions.

The moves come as artificial intelligence, public policy, and broader economic conditions are driving sweeping changes in the business landscape.

A World Economic Forum survey last year found that some 41% of companies worldwide expected to reduce their workforces in the next five years because of the rise of artificial intelligence. The survey also found that jobs in big data, fintech, and AI are expected to double by 2030.

Last year, Business Insider tracked layoffs at around 65 major companies, such as Amazon, Meta, Paramount, and Starbucks. In 2026, we'll continue to track additional job cuts based on company announcements, WARN notices, and our own reporting.

Here are the companies with job cuts underway in 2026, listed in alphabetical order.

Amazon is laying off thousands of employees

Amazon said in January that it is eliminating around 16,000 corporate roles globally.

This marks its second round of mass layoffs since October, when the tech and retail giant shed 14,000 roles.

Beth Galetti, senior vice president of people experience and technology, described the move in a company memo as part of broader efforts to cut back on bureaucracy inside the company.

Angi is cutting 350 jobs

Angi, the popular contractor listing site once known as Angie's List, said in January that it was cutting around 350 jobs "to reduce operating expenses and optimize the organizational structure in support of long-term growth." The company also said it's making the cuts "in light of AI-driven efficiency improvements."

In a January 7 SEC filing, Angi said that the cuts would save between $70 million and $80 million in annual spending. The layoffs will cost the company between $22 million and $30 million, according to the filing.

Atlassian is cutting 1,600 employees

Atlassian, the enterprise software company and maker of Confluence, said on March 11 that it will be cutting about 10% of its workforce as it invests in AI to reshape its organization.

CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes said in a statement that about 1,600 employees will be affected by the cuts.

"We fundamentally believe people and AI create the best outcomes. Our approach is not 'AI replaces people,'" Cannon-Brookes said. "But it would be disingenuous to pretend AI doesn't change the mix of skills we need or the number of roles required in certain areas. It does."

The company expects to incur $225 million and $236 million in restructuring charges, according to an SEC filing.

Citi's job cuts continue this year

Citibank will continue to cut jobs in 2026.

Citi will cut more jobs this year as part of its plan to reduce its workforce by 10%, or 20,000 employees.

In a statement on January 13, the bank said that it will continue to reduce head count in 2026.

"These changes reflect adjustments we're making to ensure our staffing levels, locations and expertise align with current business needs," a spokesperson for Citi said.

The plan was detailed in the company's January 2024 earnings report and could save the bank as much as $2.5 billion.

Cloudflare lays off 20% of its global workforce

Cybersecurity company Cloudflare on May 7 said it plans to cut roughly 20% of its global workforce, affecting more than 1,100 employees.

In an internal memo, Cloudflare executives said the company's use of AI has climbed more than 600% over the past three months, and that the rapid shift has forced the company to reconsider its structure.

"We want to be clear that this decision is not a reflection of the individual work or talent of those leaving us," Cloudflare executives wrote in the May 7 memo. "Instead, we are reimagining every internal process, team, and role across the company."

The company's shares fell more than 14% in extended trading following the announcement.

Coinbase is cutting 14% of staff

The CEO of Coinbase, Brian Armstrong, said in a letter to staff on May 5 that 14% of its staff would be cut, largely because of AI.

"AI is changing how we work. Over the past year, I've watched engineers use AI to ship in days what used to take a team weeks," wrote. "The pace of what's possible with a small, focused team has changed dramatically, and it's accelerating every day."

Armstrong said this would mean fewer layers and faster decisions in the company. No pure managers, he said — all leaders will now be required to get stuck in and "get their hands dirty."

"AI is bringing a profound shift in how companies operate, and we're reshaping Coinbase to lead in this new era," he added.

Crypto.com laid off 12% of its workforce

Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek said in March that the company laid off 12% of its workforce, including "roles that do not adapt in our new world."

"Companies that move immediately and pair the best AI tools with top-performers will achieve a level of scale and precision that was previously impossible," Marszalek wrote in a post on X. "This is where we must go."

Dell cut 10% of its workforce

Dell cut its workforce by 10% for the third year in a row, the company said in its annual filing with the SEC.

As of January 31, 2026, the company had 97,000 employees, down 11,000 from the same time last year. The decline includes both layoffs and attrition, Business Insider reported.

eBay is expected to lay off 6% of its employees

eBay is set to eliminate about 800 jobs globally, making up 6% of its workforce. The company told Business Insider that it's taking steps to better align with its strategic priorities.

"We are grateful for the contributions of the employees impacted and are committed to supporting them with care and respect," a company spokesperson said in a statement.

Epic Games is cutting 20% of its workforce

Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite, said in March that it would lay off more than 1,000 people — about 20% of its workforce — as engagement with the game declined.

CEO Tim Sweeney said in a memo that the layoffs "aren't related to AI."

"To the extent it improves productivity, we want to have as many awesome developers developing great content and tech as we can," Sweeney said.

Estée Lauder is deepening its cuts, now to as many as 10,000 roles

Estée Lauder said in its May earnings report that it will deepen its previously announced cuts, which are now expected to affect up to 10,000 jobs.

More than two-thirds of the reductions are in cashier and demonstration roles at lower-performing retail and department stores.

Expedia laid off some employees

Expedia said it was cutting some roles but the scope of the cuts was unclear.

Expedia confirmed to Business Insider that it had laid off some employees on January 26 and had also posted new job openings. It's unclear how many of its workers were affected by the cuts.

"We are eliminating roles as well as opening some new roles as we remain disciplined about assessing the skills we need for the future," an Expedia Group spokesperson said in a statement. "We are also simplifying our structure and reducing organizational layers to move faster and with more accountability. These are not easy decisions, and we are grateful for the contributions of our colleagues who are impacted."

Freshworks is cutting 11% of staff

The San Mateo, California-based software company said in its early May earnings report that it would cut 11% of its staff in the second quarter. The company had about 4,500 employees at the end of 2025.

The cuts aim "to streamline the Company's organizational efforts and product development process" and increase AI across the company, according to the filing.

On an earnings call, CEO Dennis Woodside said about half the company's code comes from AI.

"Like many other software companies, that is definitely changing how we build products, how fast we can build products, and the amount of people that we need to build products," he said.

The company's stock slumped 35% from May 2025 to May 2026.

General Motors

GM is overhauling its tech workforce to prioritize AI and software expertise.

General Motors is cutting 600 salaried employees from its global IT division.

A spokesperson said the layoffs would enable it to "better position the company for the future," by ensuring GM has employees with expertise in AI-native development, data engineering, analytics, cloud engineering, prompt engineering, and AI workflows.

GoPro is laying off 145 employees

GoPro is cutting 23% of its staff to cut costs.

On April 7, GoPro said it would lay off about 145 employees as it tries to cut operating costs and restructure operations.

The layoffs make up 23% of its global headcount of 631 employees, the camera maker said in a regulatory filing.

The cuts will start in the second quarter of the year and will largely be completed by the end of 2026. The restructuring is expected to result in a charge of $11.5 million to $15 million.

The company cut about 15% of its staff in August 2024 to cut costs.

Heineken has a multi-year plan to reduce its workforce

Heineken is cutting 5,000 to 6,000 roles over the next two years to boost productivity and bring down costs, according to its latest full-year earnings report.

The company told Business Insider that the divisions and regions where the layoffs are due to take place are yet to be confirmed.

Heineken said in its 2025 report that it faced "subdued consumer sentiment" in the Americas, alongside a "challenging year" for brewers in Europe.

Kenvue cuts 3.5% of workforce

Kenvue will be laying off 3.5% of its workforce.

Consumer healthcare brand Kenvue, which produces Tylenol, plans to cut 3.5% of its staff. Kenvue had about 22,000 employees globally, per its latest annual report.

The company wrote in a mid-February SEC filing that its board aimed to reduce complexity and drive operational efficiencies.

The company's layoffs and restructuring efforts are expected to cost $250 million in 2026, per the filing.

Lululemon laid off 100 part-time employees at its customer service center

The athleisure giant said it laid off 100 part-time employees to "strengthen the business." The affected roles are in the company's North American contact center.

"After careful consideration, we have made the decision to transition our North America GEC to a full-time employee staffing model. As a result, approximately 100 part-time positions in our GEC have been impacted," a Lululemon spokesperson said.

Meta lays off workers at Reality Labs and other divisions

Meta began laying off employees across multiple teams on March 25, including Reality Labs, Facebook, recruiting, sales, and global operations.

The cuts come as the company ramps up spending on AI infrastructure and talent, alongside broader cost-cutting efforts. Meta said the changes are part of ongoing restructuring to better align teams with company goals, while exploring other roles for affected employees where possible.

Meta first began preparing to slash jobs within its Reality Labs division, the unit responsible for Mark Zuckerberg's metaverse ambitions, in January, three people familiar with the matter told Business Insider at the time.

Two employees said that teams working on virtual reality headsets and Horizon Worlds, the company's VR social network, would be disproportionately affected.

Meta has shifted away from virtual reality in recent years in favor of spending hundreds of billions of dollars on beefing up its AI capabilities.

Nike laid off workers in two rounds

Nike is cutting roughly 1,400 jobs, mostly from tech, as part of a broader push to streamline operations and revive growth.

In a memo to staff on April 23 obtained by Business Insider, Chief Operating Officer Venkatesh Alagirisamy said the layoffs are tied to the company's "win now" turnaround plan, which focuses on improving culture, product, marketing, marketplace strategy, and in-person retail. He described the effort as entering its "final stretch."

This is Nike's second layoff in 2026. Nike said on January 26 that it planned to lay off 775 employees across Tennessee and Mississippi, citing efforts to "streamline" its distribution center operations.

"We are sharpening our supply chain footprint, accelerating the use of advanced technology and automation, and investing in the skills our teams need for the future," Nike said in a statement to Business Insider.

Oracle is making cuts across regions

Oracle started laying off employees on March 31. The cuts appear to affect employees worldwide.

The company employed around 162,000 full-time employees as of May 2025, according to its most recent 10-K filing.

"After careful consideration of Oracle's current business needs, we have made the decision to eliminate your role as part of a broader organizational change. As a result, today is your last working day," the company said in an email to affected employees.

Papa Johns is restructuring

Papa Johns said it will be closing 300 stores over the next two years, including 200 in 2026.

Papa Johns said it is laying off 7% of its corporate staff amid a broader restructuring.

The pizza chain said it will also close 300 locations in North America through 2027, starting with 200 this year.

"Optimizing our restaurant portfolio and strategically closing underperforming restaurants are among the most impactful actions we can take to improve restaurant profitability and fleet health," Papa Johns CFO Ravi Thanawala said during the company's fourth quarter earnings call on February 26.

Pinterest is expected to lay off 15% of its workforce

Pinterest announced a global restructuring plan that includes layoffs affecting less than 15% of its workforce, according to a January securities filing. The cuts come with reductions in office space.

"We are making organizational changes to further deliver on our AI-forward strategy, which includes hiring AI-proficient talent," a Pinterest spokesperson said.

"As a result, we've made the difficult decision to say goodbye to some of our team members. We are grateful for their service and supporting them with separation packages and benefits," they added.

Saks laid off 16% of its corporate staff, among other job cuts

Saks Global, the beleaguered parent company of Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Bergdorf Goodman, conducted several rounds of layoffs as it closed stores and trimmed its corporate staff

In April, the company cut about 16% of its corporate staff, representing less than 4% of its total workforce.

"Following the strategic actions we've taken to secure long-term financial stability, sharpen our focus on luxury and full-price selling, optimize our operational footprint, and exit non-core businesses, we are right-sizing our corporate organization to align with our go-forward strategy," a Saks spokesperson told Business Insider.

The cuts followed Saks's closure of dozens of stores and fulfillment centers in the first quarter, resulting in layoffs.

Saks filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January.

T-Mobile cut some jobs

T-Mobile cut some staff in early 2026, though the scope of the layoffs is unclear. Some workers posted on LinkedIn saying they'd been affected by the changes in January.

"As the next step in our evolution, we're making some changes while continuing to hire to ensure we have the right focus, structure, and momentum to keep changing the industry through innovation and our long-standing focus on customers," T-Mobile told Business Insider in a statement.

Tailwind cut 3 of its 4 engineers

Tailwind, a popular web tool, said it cut three of its four engineers in January, citing an AI-driven decline in revenue.

"75% of the people on our engineering team lost their jobs here yesterday because of the brutal impact AI has had on our business," CEO Adam Wathan wrote in a GitHub comment on January 6 that made waves in the tech community.

Target is cutting 500 roles from its distribution and regional offices

Target confirmed to Business Insider in February that it would cut 100 district office roles and 400 supply chain positions. It plans to invest instead in additional labor hours at stores to improve the shopping experience and return to growth.

The store improvement effort is a signature priority of the retailer's new CEO, Michael Fiddelke, who started on February 1.

In November, Fiddelke said the company intends to invest an additional $1 billion in capital expenditures for 2026, an increase of 25% from 2025.

UPS said it will eliminate 30,000 jobs

UPS CEO Brian Dykes told analysts during the company's fourth-quarter earnings call that the company plans to reduce its operational workforce by 30,000 in 2026.

"This will be accomplished through attrition, and we expect to offer a second voluntary separation program for full-time drivers," Dykes said.

He told analysts that the company has identified 24 buildings for closure in the first half of 2026 and will continue to evaluate additional buildings for closure.

WiseTech is cutting 30% of its workforce

Wisetech is cutting 2,000 jobs.

Logistics software maker Wisetech is cutting 2,000 jobs, or 30% of its staff, citing AI-driven efficiency gains.

In a conference call on February 25, CEO Zubin Appoo embraced AI and said that it means more productivity, in less time, and from fewer employees. The Sydney-based company employed about 7,000 people, according to its annual report released in October.

"I am prepared to say this clearly: the era of manually writing code as the core act of engineering is over," Appoo said. AI is "unlocking levels of efficiency gains across WiseTech that were previously out of reach."

Workday is cutting jobs

Workday is cutting about 400 jobs, and said on February 4 that the move will help the enterprise software company redirect resources toward priority areas.

The layoffs will primarily affect customer-facing roles that are "non-revenue generating," Workday said in a regulatory filing.

The cuts represent roughly 2% of its workforce and are expected to result in about $135 million in charges in the fiscal fourth quarter, which ended in January.

Workday announced a larger round of layoffs about a year ago, citing the need to invest more heavily in strategic areas such as AI. The company reported about 20,600 employees as of late October.

I grew up in a split-level home with my mom and her two sisters. My unconventional, modern upbringing shaped who I am now.

After my parents' divorce, my mom and I moved into a house with my two aunts.
I loved being raised by three women, and have felt closer to my different "moms" throughout my life.
As an adult, I've realized that my upbringing with three maternal figures made me who I am now.

My family structure changed forever on the night of the "Cheetah Girls 2" premiere.

At the time, I remember being pretty annoyed — not because of my parents' separation, but because the Cheetah Girls were just starting to sing their way through Barcelona, and now my mother was whisking my 8-year-old self away and ruining the fun.

What my mother was actually doing, though, was leaving my father and bringing us a few miles north, back to her childhood home.

She grew up the youngest of six children in a big Italian family. At the time of her split from my dad, my grandparents had already passed and her brothers were out of the house, but her two sisters still lived under one roof.

When we arrived at my mother's childhood home, my aunts took us in with open arms. One of them, Annmarie, was already offering to let me skip school and get ice cream — because, you know, I was now a kid of divorce.

In many ways, that night marked the beginning of something much bigger than a new home. It was the start of me being nurtured within a remarkable sisterhood, one that would profoundly shape the person I would become.

My mom and I instantly made ourselves at home

Both of my aunts were unmarried and child-free. Living with them was supposed to be a temporary setup, but because of the childcare support my mom needed, it made sense to stay as long as possible.

Growing up, living with three mother figures felt natural: being carted off to school and activities by Annmarie, eating her famous pasta e fagioli at dinnertime, and occasionally being left to my own devices to play Webkinz.

I slept in a bedroom wedged between my mom's room and Aunt Annmarie's, while Aunt Louise converted the downstairs office into her own room. Almost 30 years later, what began as an emergency landing spot remains our permanent family set-up.

At different life stages, I've been closer to different 'moms'

After my parents' divorce, Aunt Annmarie became my primary caregiver while my mother worked.

Annmarie drove me to school, to after-school sports, and everywhere in between. She is the family's undisputed matriarch, the oldest sister with an encyclopedic memory and an unmatched arsenal of one-liners about life.

We drove each other crazy during my teenage years, but the older I got, the more I saw myself in her: her obsessive cleaning habits, her fierce protectiveness, and her "it's all going to hell in a handbasket" sense of humor.

During college, it was Aunt Louise I gravitated toward. We bonded over traveling, our love lives, and our shared ambitions, like starting our own businesses. We'd FaceTime for hours each week and never ran out of things to say. We still don't.

To everyone in the family, she is the therapist and the first call in a crisis. She likes to joke that when I finally "make it," I'll owe her back pay for all our sessions. If I can, I plan to honor that debt.

Then there's my mom, Teresa, with whom I've been close my whole life. More like best friends than mother and daughter, we would take trips from Long Island into New York City and to Miami just to lounge and read. She knows me like no one else does.

I feel immensely lucky to have had such different "moms" and vibrant women to turn to throughout my life. I believe my personality, ambitions, quirks, and work ethic can all be attributed to each of them in different ways.

Authority in our household functioned less like a parent-child dynamic and more like a sibling hierarchy. We had what I called "The Three-Strike System": If Annmarie said I couldn't sleep over at a friend's house, I'd ask Teresa.

If that didn't work, Louise was my last resort — and she was almost always on my side, ensuring it was never two against two. I'd be lying if I said I didn't use this to my advantage from time to time.

Emotions often ran high in my household, shaped by sisterly tensions that existed long before I came into the picture. Although there were never arguments about how to raise me — with my aunts always deferring to my mother — conflict was still common.

Does Annmarie like the house a certain way? Yes. Does Louise get irritated when Teresa doesn't vacuum to her standards? Absolutely. Friction was inevitable, but with fierce love comes fierce disagreements.

As an adult, I've noticed the ways in which I was raised differently from my friends. I was always spoken to like an adult and vice versa (hence why I've always called my mother "Teresa" rather than "Mom," which surprises some people).

I've also acted as an emotional referee between my "mothers," translating one's love language or remorse. "That's not what she meant," I'd insist to one.

"She was hurt, not angry," I'd tell the other, softening sharp edges and rephrasing apologies before they had the chance to land wrong. I learned early that love isn't always spoken in the same language, and sometimes it needs a third party.

My upbringing shaped my instinct to read a room, to make space, and connect with others quickly. It's why I keep my friendships close and my circle wide, why strangers rarely stay strangers for long.

More than anything, I am grateful for my non-traditional upbringing — despite being a little light on boundaries — because it taught me how to show up for others.

Anthropic president Daniela Amodei shared her tips for picking a good cofounder.

"If you're like, 'Really going to need a vacation to recover from my vacation,' it might be the wrong choice," she said.

If your cofounder relationship wouldn't survive sharing a hotel room, that's a problem, according to one Anthropic cofounder.

Daniela Amodei left OpenAI with her brother, Dario, to launch Anthropic. The duo — along with their five other cofounders — built one of the most valuable AI businesses, one that investors are racing to get into.

In a talk at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Amodei offered advice on picking a cofounder. Interpersonal relationship dynamics "matter a lot more than you think," she said.

"Dario and I have been fighting and getting over it for over forty years," she said. "He's my brother, and I used to steal his toys."

One of Amodei's tips for finding a good cofounder: "Instead of starting a company together, go on vacation together."

Travel can reveal weaknesses in a relationship, from planning stops and booking flights to cohabitating. Cofounders should try sharing a room while vacationing, Amodei said.

After the trip, evaluate the relationship. If entrepreneurs still want to spend time with their cofounders, Amodei said that it was likely a good match.

"If you're like, 'Really going to need a vacation to recover from my vacation,' it might be the wrong choice," Amodei said.

Being on the same page as your cofounder is also crucial. Having different skills may be helpful — think of the visionary Steve Jobs versus the realist Steve Wozniak — but having different principles can crush a company.

Amodei gave the audience a challenge: Imagine you and your cofounder were locked in different rooms and asked to draw a picture of what the startup is doing. It's important that you don't end up drawing separate images, like a unicorn and a platypus, she said.

"That's the type of situation where you think you're doing the same thing, but I think it just doesn't end well," she said.

A Ukrainian company making ground robots said it was surprised to see Russian soldiers surrender to its machines.

Ukraine's military has shared multiple videos showing Russian soldiers surrendering to unmanned ground vehicles, or UGVs, which are increasingly taking over human combat roles and being used to keep Ukrainian troops farther from the fighting.

Oleg Fedoryshyn, the director of R&D at DevDroid, which makes combat robots and weapon-mounting systems for machine guns and grenade launchers, said he was caught off guard by reports that Russian soldiers had surrendered to one of the company's robots.

"Of course, I was a little bit surprised," he said.

Fedoryshyn said that robots are well-suited for this particular role because they reduce the danger to Ukrainian troops. A surrendering Russian soldier could attack approaching soldiers or detonate a grenade, he said, something Ukraine has previously reported happening. If a robot approaches instead and they opt for such a course of action, then the worst-case scenario is they just "destroy some metal, and that's all."

One highly publicized surrender was in January. DevDroid shared footage of one of its TW-7.62 systems capturing three Russian soldiers. In the video, three men walk with their arms raised and then lie down. The company then wrote that the operation meant there was "no risk for our fighters" and that this is "what modern warfare looks like."

Fedoryshyn said Russian troops have surrendered to DevDroid robots in other cases as well. "It's not just the one incident."

Ukrainian units don't share full operational details with manufacturers, but Fedoryshyn said he suspects there were likely soldiers nearby, with aerial drones also supporting the mission. Still, he said, using the robotic system for the surrender helped keep troops safe.

Robots are increasingly being used to capture Russian soldiers. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in April that Ukraine had, for the first time, forced Russian soldiers to surrender and captured their position using only aerial drones and ground robots, without infantry involvement.

It was done "without losses on our side," he said.

The ground robots are newer to the war than aerial drones, but they are quickly changing the fight. They are being used to evacuate wounded soldiers, carry gear and weaponry, fire at or explode inside Russian positions, and to lay and remove mines.

As Ukraine bets big on robotic systems, Zelenskyy said last month that he had tasked officials with manufacturing at least 50,000 ground robots this year. And Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said the country's goal is to have 100% of front-line logistics done by robotic systems, not by humans. These efforts come as the number of combat missions involving the robots has soared in recent months.

Russian soldiers have also been recorded surrendering to aerial drones during the war. In some cases, troops have held up written messages visible to drone cameras or followed surrender instructions dropped or broadcast by Ukrainian drones.

Ukraine issued an instructional video in 2022 with instructions for Russian soldiers on how they could surrender to Ukrainian drones.

Ukraine has reported Russian soldiers surrendering throughout the war amid accounts of poor morale, minimal training, and deadly "meat wave" assaults. Russia also holds Ukrainian prisoners of war. Ukraine has shared videos it says show Russian soldiers killing themselves rather than being captured, alleging some commanders instruct troops not to surrender.

Ukraine actively encourages Russian soldiers to surrender through a program called "I Want to Live," which promises treatment in accordance with the Geneva Convention, including food and medical care. The service's website says that "you are not alone — several thousand servicemen have already saved their lives by surrendering voluntarily."

Responding to an X user who said the name Cloudflare is "not good" and "not aspirational," Prince agreed.

"I'd add: too long, hard for English speakers to say Cluh and Fluh next to each other so becomes Cloudfare, multiple ways to spell flare/flair," he wrote.

He said it's better than his original idea, however. Prince said he considered "Project Web Wall," which he joked would be a "nightmare" for the late broadcast journalist Barbara Walters, who had a distinctive speech impediment.

Cloudflare is one of the companies that helps keep the internet running behind the scenes. It helps websites and apps load faster, route traffic, and defend against cyberattacks, including DDoS attacks and bot traffic. The company says its tools protect websites, apps, APIs, and AI workloads while speeding up performance through its content delivery network.

When Cloudflare goes down, it often takes large parts of the internet down with it. A large Cloudflare outage last year disrupted ChatGPT, X, and other major sites.

For a company whose business is so essential, it's surprising how often it's mispelled or mispronounced. Typos appear in developer forums, support threads, and even public bug reports.

Prince's introspection about his company's name came after a turbulent week.

On Thursday, Cloudflare laid off more than 1,100 employees, or about 20% of its staff.

In a memo announcing the layoffs, Cloudflare executives said the company's AI use had surged "more than 600% in the last three months alone," and that it needed to rethink its structure to move faster and deliver more value to customers.

The FCCs proposed plan to fight spam calls puts consumer privacy in jeopardy

Sick and tired of having your day disrupted by robocalls? You're not alone, and the FCC is taking notice. In press releases from the past month, the FCC said that preventing illegal spam calls has become its "top consumer protection priority," while FCC chairman Brendan Carr vowed to "bring meaningful robocall relief to consumers."

Unfortunately, their approach might be so broad, so badly focused, that it will create new privacy concerns, destroy so-called "burner" phones, and place an extra burden on consumers. Or in the words of Gizmodo's Mike Pearl, "the FCC's cure might be worse than the disease."

One proposed change, known as the "Know Your Customer" rules, would require businesses to collect a government ID, a physical address, and the customer's full legal name, instead of just their phone number, to initiate phone contact. This proposed change might serve to stop robocalls, but it would also effectively end the concept of consumer privacy. In the words of civil liberties advocates Reclaim the Net: "The result would be an identity-verification regime covering one of the last semi-anonymous communication tools available to ordinary Americans."

Worse still, the FCC's proposed "red flags" that would heighten scrutiny are broad enough to encompass the lawful behaviors of millions of Americans. Proposed red flags include using a virtual office, making payments in cryptocurrency, using a "suspicious" email address, or operating a phone number not tied to a residential address.

While all of these activities are likely indicative of robocall spammer behavior, they are also common practices among law-abiding citizens, who often operate out of virtual offices or use so-called "burner" or pre-paid phones. Worse still, the people who rely on prepaid phones often do so because of the anonymity they afford — think about refugees fleeing conflict zones or victims of domestic abuse attempting to keep a low profile.

Finally, the FCC is looking to place the burden of enforcement on telecom providers, threatening them rather than individual spam callers with up to $2,500 in fines per call. While this approach is no doubt easier than searching out every individual robocall operator, and certainly motivates the companies to take enforcement seriously, it also creates a bad incentive in which telecom operators have to scrutinize each individual customer and their behavior at the expense of consumer privacy.

Ultimately, spam calls might prove to be the price we pay for enjoying a modicum of privacy in the digital age.

Depending on who you ask, the last people you'd want to stand next to at your neighborhood bar are the man who started the Iran war and the man who helped end abortion (their words, not ours). Resident Evil: Requiem gets a cool and free new mode, out now

Resident Evil: Requiem already had plenty of meat on the bone, between a decently sized campaign and plenty of post-game goodies to chew on. Now, a couple of months after launch, it's gotten some pretty fun-sounding free DLC.

Capcom released a surprise update this week that included an action-packed new mode called Leon Must Die Forever. Unlocked after you finish the main story, Leon Must Die Forever is a gauntlet of high-octane action challenges starring everyone's favorite former rookie cop, Leon S. Kennedy. Capcom's official description makes it sound pretty straightforward: kill more difficult-than-usual enemies within a time limit, fight bosses, unlock enhancements, and try not to die, despite the mode's name.

"Fight your way through areas you’ve visited previously throughout the game and defeat the final boss, all with stronger enemy variants, five increasingly difficulty ranks, and a race against the clock! Fill your enhancement gauge by defeating enemies in order to unlock Leon’s “enhancer abilities” exclusive to this game mode," Capcom's press release said.

Capcom has always had a habit of adding cool, stripped-down action-based modes to Resident Evil games that are meant to be played after finishing the story. Traditionally, they're usually called some variant of "Mercenaries," but the company went with the infinitely more fun Leon Must Die Forever for this one. If you're like me and you're still itching to roundhouse kick zombies and mutilate them with a hand axe despite having finished the story, maybe check this one out.

The ship will arrive in the Canary Islands off Spain's coast on Sunday to evacuate passengers.

The World Health Organization's director-general said the current hantavirus outbreak, which is so far linked to the deaths of three people, isn't "another COVID-19."

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus shared the message in an X post directed toward the residents of Tenerife, where a cruise ship that faced an outbreak of hantavirus will evacuate early Sunday morning. Some Tenerife residents have protested the ship's scheduled arrival, concerned that it could cause another pandemic.

"I know you are worried. I know that when you hear the word 'outbreak' and watch a ship sail toward your shores, memories surface that none of us have fully put to rest," Ghebreyesus said on Saturday. "The pain of 2020 is still real, and I do not dismiss it for a single moment. But I need you to hear me clearly: this is not another COVID-19."

Ghebreyesus said the current public health risk from hantavirus remains low, and there are no symptomatic passengers aboard the ship — called the MV Honduis — at this time.

"Spain's authorities have prepared a careful, step-by-step plan: passengers will be ferried ashore at the industrial port of Granadilla, far from residential areas, in sealed, guarded vehicles, through a completely cordoned-off corridor, and repatriated directly to their home countries," Ghebreyesus said. "You will not encounter them. Your families will not encounter them."

Some Tenerife residents protested the scheduled arrival of the cruise ship.

The World Health Organization first received reports of passengers with severe respiratory illness aboard the cruise ship on May 2. As of May 8, a total of eight cases, including three deaths, have been reported. Health officials said the virus is the Andes strain, known to have limited human-to-human transmission.

The United States, which officially withdrew from the World Health Organization earlier this year, shared an update for Americans through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on May 8. At the moment, the risk to the American public and travelers "remains extremely low," the agency said.

In his X post, Ghebreyesus thanked Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of Spain for agreeing to receive the cruise ship.

"I intend to travel to Tenerife to observe this operation firsthand, to stand alongside the health workers, port staff, and officials who are making it happen, and to personally pay my respects to an island that has responded to a difficult situation with grace, solidarity, and compassion. Your humanity deserves to be witnessed, not just acknowledged from a distance," he said.

Ghebreyesus added, "As I have said many times: viruses do not care about politics, and they do not respect borders. The best immunity any of us has is solidarity."

I almost ruined my dream trip to the Galápagos Islands by making one simple money mistake

Not having enough cash on hand cost me time and money during my trip to the Galápagos Islands.

When I visited the Galápagos Islands, I assumed I'd be able to use credit cards and easily get cash.
Unfortunately, ATM fees and credit-card charges were quite high on the islands.
Next time, I'll bring more cash and spend more time in the Galápagos to help my money go further.

Last year, I took a dream vacation to a place I had heard about my whole life, but never thought I would have the chance to visit: the Galápagos Islands.

I swam with sea turtles and sharks, hung out with sea lions, and walked with the legendary giant tortoises.

I traveled solo, skipped the touristy cruises, flew coach, and negotiated for some great deals, but my trip was nearly overshadowed by one major mistake: I didn't bring nearly enough cold, hard cash in the form of US dollars.

Ecuador is a fully dollarized economy, which means American travelers don't even need to exchange currency. However, getting dollars once I was on the islands proved to be more difficult — and expensive — than I expected.

Although I brought some cash, I spent most of it before my vacation even began

I didn't get nearly enough cash in Ecuador before I headed to the islands.

Before my trip, I thought a few hundred dollars would be all I needed for the week. Instead, my cash was gone before I even saw a blue-footed booby.

For one, there's a long list of fees visitors have to pay just to enter the islands. There are also costs to get from the mostly uninhabited island where the main airport is located to other islands, where it's actually possible to book a stay for the night.

First, I spent $20 on a Galápagos Transit Control Card at the mainland airport in Guayaquil, Ecuador. This is a mandatory document for all visitors, used to monitor tourism and manage immigration.

Then, I flew to the Seymour Airport, located on the mostly uninhabited island of Baltra in the Galápagos. I paid a $200 mandatory national-park entry fee so I could exit the airport.

I took several forms of transportation to reach my accommodations.

From there, I spent about $15 to take a bus and ferry from Baltra to Santa Cruz, where my accommodations and tours were located.

Once I arrived in Santa Cruz, I paid $25 for a taxi from the ferry terminal to the main town. I would've just taken the bus for about $5, but none were available when I arrived.

Using credit cards and getting cash on the islands wasn't as great or as easy as I'd anticipated

Although I didn't have much cash by the time I arrived at my accommodations, I still had my credit cards and knew I'd be able to withdraw US dollars from any ATM in the country if needed.

Unfortunately, I found out too late that many locally owned accommodations won't accept credit cards, and almost all of the local tour operators charge hefty fees for using them.

Operators tack on credit-card or "convenience" fees that can rise to as high as 10% or 20% of the total bill. When I started really running low on money, I learned that convenience comes at a steep price for cash, too.

Between the local ATM fees and my bank's international and out-of-network charges, I got hit with more than $25 in fees on a single withdrawal.

Looking back, there are a few ways I wish I'd saved money on my trip

Even if I hadn't brought more cash from home, I should've at least gotten it before flying to the Galápagos Islands.

If you're planning your first trip, don't follow in my footsteps.

First of all, a shorter stay offers the least bang for your buck, and my trip was just three days.

Since the upfront fees to enter the islands are the same regardless of how long you're staying, my cost-per-day breakdown felt astronomical.

If you're going to pay the price of admission to the islands, I suggest you stay at least a week to make the initial investment worth it.

If I could do this trip over, I'd spend more time in the Galápagos.

For a weeklong stay, I'd also advise packing at least $600 in a mix of bills ranging from $5 to $100 so you can tip easily without worrying about getting change.

Even if bringing more cash from home isn't feasible, it's at least worth withdrawing some before flying to the Galápagos. Major cities like Guayaquil and Quito, where most visitors catch their flights to the islands, tend to have lower ATM fees.

All in all, I had a great time seeing the Galápagos Islands, but my vacation could've gone smoother — and been a better value — if I'd been a bit more prepared.

Amazon reveals the cause of the May 2026 AWS outage

Late in the week, an Amazon Web Services outage affected a range of websites. In the wake of that outage, which lasted from Thursday into Friday, Amazon has revealed what happened.

In an update on the official AWS status website, Amazon revealed that the outage was caused by a "thermal event resulting in a loss of power" at a single data center in northern Virginia. In other words, some tech overheated. This prompted Amazon to shift traffic away from that data center's "Availability Zone" during the late afternoon on Thursday. By early afternoon on Friday, Amazon had managed to restore its cooling systems, which kick-started the process of getting everything back online.

"Our main effort during the event mitigation strategy was to bring back our cooling systems capacity. By May 8 1:50 PM, we were able to stabilize cooling system capacity to pre-event levels, which helped us to restore the majority of the impaired EC2 instances and EBS volumes," Amazon said. "A small number of instances and EBS volumes remain impaired, and we continue to work to recover all affected remaining resources."

The outage affected some popular apps, like FanDuel and Coinbase. Users were unable to bet or trade as they normally would on those apps for a while, likely leading to some consternation on Thursday and Friday. However, the issue seems to be mostly resolved at this point, so you can probably get your NBA playoff prop bets in now, if you so desire.

Worries about AI one day replacing human workers have intensified recently — and as it turns out, that future may be here.

A number of companies have recently announced cuts staff and cited AI efficiencies as a major rationale.

A March report from career transition firm Challenger, Gray, and Christmas found that so far this year, AI has been cited in 8% of job cut plans.

Amid this rash of layoffs, some have asked whether AI is replacing so many roles once held by humans or whether some degree of "AI washing" is at work. OpenAI's Sam Altman said some companies are blaming AI for layoffs that would've happened regardless.

An MIT study released last year said that 95% of corporate AI investments have generated "zero return" so far.

Even as some companies replace human workers with the technology, they may end up hiring more people because of it — or rehiring at least some of the roles they eliminated. A 2025 survey conducted by consulting firm Robert Half found that 29% of 2,000 hiring managers said they reopened positions that had been previously got rid of after implementing AI.

Here's a list of companies that have done AI-related layoffs:

Angi

Angi, the popular contractor listing site previously known as Angie's List, said in January that it was cutting roughly 350 jobs in part because of "AI-driven efficiency improvements."

The company added that the cuts were part of a plan "to reduce operating expenses and optimize the organizational structure in support of long-term growth."

Atlassian

Last year, Atlassian CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes said that his company would have more engineers working for it in five years than it did then.

Atlassian announced cuts of 1,600 jobs in March, totaling about 10% of its global workforce. The move comes as the Australian-American software company says it is restructuring to focus on AI and enterprise growth.

In a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said the reduction was part of a broader effort to reposition the business for what CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes described as the "AI era."

"It would be disingenuous to pretend AI doesn't change the mix of skills we need or the number of roles required in certain areas. It does," Cannon-Brookes wrote in a message to employees.

On the "20VC" podcast in October last year, prior to the cuts, Cannon-Brookes said he planned to have more engineers at the company in five years.

"They will be more efficient, but technology creation is not output-bound," Cannon-Brookes said.

Block

In a post on X in February, billionaire and Block CEO Jack Dorsey said he was slashing nearly half of Block's workforce, cutting its over 10,000-person staff to under 6,000. The move came as he said business was strong and profits were growing, but a new way of working was emerging.

"We're already seeing that the intelligence tools we're creating and using, paired with smaller and flatter teams, are enabling a new way of working which fundamentally changes what it means to build and run a company," Dorsey said in his memo on X.

In the company's earnings call that followed the memo, Dorsey said that more companies will follow suit in using AI to drive efficiency gains. Block is already ahead of the trend that "all companies will eventually" adopt, the CEO said.

Cloudflare

Cloudflare announced on May 7 that it will be slashing more than 1,100 roles as it reorganizes for the "agentic AI era." The cybersecurity company said in a memo that its AI usage has increased by over 600% in the last three months, and employees across departments run thousands of agent sessions each day.

"That means we have to be intentional in how we architect our company for the agentic AI era in order to supercharge the value we deliver to our customers," the company said in the memo to staff.

Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince reponded to a critical post on X saying that "very few engineers or customer-facing sales people impacted by our layoff."

He wrote that the company will continue to hire "like crazy in those roles," as it did as a startup. Cloudflare employed 5,483 people as of the end of March, meaning the cuts impacted about 20% of its workforce.

Coinbase

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced that the company will be slashing 14% of its workforce, or about 700 workers.

In a post on X on May 5, Armstrong shared an email that he said he sent to workers earlier that day. In the post, he cited two factors: a volatile market and AI changing the way people work.

"Over the past year, I've watched engineers use AI to ship in days what used to take a team weeks," Armstrong said, adding that, "the pace of what's possible with a small, focused team has changed dramatically."

Armstrong said the company isn't just reducing headcount and cutting costs, but "fundamentally changing" the way it operates. The CEO said Coinbase is rebuilding itself "as an intelligence, with humans around the edge aligning it."

He shared plans for the workforce to be concentrated around AI-native pods that will manage fleets of agents. Armstrong said the company will also experiment with "one person teams" of engineers, designers, and product managers.

Crypto.com

Crypto.com announced on March 19 that it would cut 12% of its staff. The CEO, Kris Marszalek, wrote in a post on X that those impacted were in "roles that do not adapt in our new world."

"We are joining the list of companies integrating enterprise-wide AI," Marszalek wrote on X. "Companies that move immediately and pair the best AI tools with top-performers will achieve a level of scale and precision that was previously impossible. This is where we must go."

The company previously cut jobs in 2022 during a cryptocurrency slump and another 20% of its workforce in 2023, following the collapse of FTX.

HP Inc.

HP said it's reducing the size of its corporate workforce as a result of AI initiatives. In an earnings report last November, the company said it plans to cut between 4,000 and 6,000 jobs by the end of 2028, estimating the changes would save around $1 billion.

HP's earnings presentation at the time said part of its strategy was to cut costs through "workforce reductions, platform simplification, programs consolidation, and productivity measures" and to increase customer satisfaction, innovation, and productivity with "artificial intelligence adoption and enablement."

IBM

Arvind Krishna, CEO of IBM, told The Wall Street Journal last year that it had replaced hundreds of human resources employees with AI.

More recently, the company announced last November that it would cut thousands of workers in the fourth quarter of 2025, affecting a "single-digit percentage of its global workforce." Its CEO, Arvind Krishna, said the company is shifting priorities to hire more people around AI and quantum. He also said the company plans to increase hiring among recent college graduates over the next year.

Krishna has also said AI adoption has led to the company hiring more employees in programming and sales.

In 2023, Krishna told Bloomberg that IBM had halted or slowed hiring for back-office roles, like in human resources, that could be replaced by AI.

"I could easily see 30% of that getting replaced by AI and automation over a five-year period," he told the outlet at the time.

Klarna

Klarna's CEO says its workforce has halved over the last four years and will shrink further in the coming years.

In an interview with Harry Stebbings on the "20 VC" podcast in February, Sebastian Siemiatkowski said there are about 3,000 employees at Klarna, and he expects the company's workforce to drop below 2,000 by 2030. The company had 7,000 employees in 2022, he said.

The CEO said the reduction is a result of layoffs and "natural attrition," which is when the company doesn't replace workers who leave.

Siemiatkowski said that "human connection" will be vital for the company, and jobs involved in that will not be replaced by AI.

"Those jobs will remain, but for the rest it's going to be definitely smaller," he said.

Klarna declined to comment further when contacted by Business Insider. A spokesperson previously said that its AI assistant handles the equivalent workload of 853 full-time agents, up from 700 at launch. The spokesperson said it was saving the company an estimated $58 million annually.

Salesforce

Salesforce cut fewer than 1,000 workers in February, including employees from marketing, product management, data analytics, and its Agentforce AI product.

In an episode of "The Logan Bartlett Show" released last August, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff said the company was using AI agents in its customer support division to replace humans and help the company work through more sales leads.

"I was able to rebalance my head count on my support," he said in the interview. "I've reduced it from 9,000 heads to about 5,000 because I need less heads."

A Salesforce spokesperson told Business Insider previously that Benioff was referencing an organizational transformation that took place over several months to reshape its customer support function.

After deploying Agentforce, the company no longer needed to "actively backfill support engineer roles," the spokesperson said, adding that it successfully redeployed hundreds of employees into other areas of the company, like professional services, sales, and customer success.

Snap

In a memo to employees released in a regulatory filing on April 15, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said the company would cut 1,000 employees, or about 16% of its global workforce. The CEO cited "rapid advancements" in AI and "small squads" using the technology to be more efficient.

Spiegel said Snap would also close more than 300 open roles, and that US-based employees would receive four months of severance, healthcare coverage, and equity vesting. In an investor update included in the company's filing, it said the layoffs would result in roughly $500 million in annualized cost savings.

Wisetech

Wisetech is cutting 2,000 jobs.

Zubin Appoo, the CEO of Wisetech, said the logistics software maker is cutting 2,000 jobs, or 30% of its staff, because of AI-led efficiency.

In a conference call on February 25, Appoo said that AI enables greater productivity in less time and with fewer employees. The Sydney-based company employed about 7,000 people, according to an annual report released in October.

"I am prepared to say this clearly: the era of manually writing code as the core act of engineering is over," Appoo said. The technology is "unlocking levels of efficiency gains across WiseTech that were previously out of reach."

In some parts of the workforce, such as customer service, one in two workers will disappear, he added.

To find the best options, Insider Reviews reporters tested 39 litter boxes and consulted veterinarians and cat behaviorists about the features that matter most for cats of different ages, sizes, and lifestyles, including seniors, large breeds, and multicat households. Whatever litter box you choose, it should measure at least 1.5 times the length of your cat from nose to base of tail, says Molly DeVoss, certified cat behavior specialist. One drawback of this box is that the low entry limits the litter depth. Some cats prefer digging in a few inches, but the fill line on this box sits at about an inch. The machine sifts waste into a lined tray that you'll need to empty every week to two times a week, depending on the frequency of use. Even if the waste bin isn't full, emptying it proactively is recommended because cats have a heightened sense of smell. Brains says he received cleaning notifications before they seemed necessary and found that if he shook the drawer to distribute the waste more evenly, the sensor would reset. The "empty" cycle works well to remove all the litter when it needs replacing, but Brains still wipes down stuck-on debris inside and deep cleans the globe every one to three months. Weight monitoring is only accurate when the machine is placed on a hard floor or a Litter-Robot Carpet Tray. Nonetheless, I consider this self-cleaning litter box worthy of the investment.

If your cat is small or has mobility issues, you can add an attachable ramp. However, the ramp still has a 5-inch rise from the floor to the first step, so it won't work for every cat. The biggest downside is the Litter-Robot 4's high cost ($700), but it comes with a one-year warranty. If you or your cat isn't happy with the Litter-Robot 4, you can also return it within 90 days for a refund, although return shipping will be deducted.

What a cat desires in a litter box often differs from what appeals to us humans. Case in point, covered litter boxes. While they hide mess and odors from us, they're far from feline-friendly. "Cats dislike covered boxes because this blocks the visual field," says Rachel Geller, a certified cat behavior and retention specialist and founder of All Cats All the Time, Inc. In multi-cat homes and ones with dogs, it's even more important for cats to have a clear view of their surroundings. Plus, the trapped odors inside a covered box can quickly turn it into a place cats avoid.

That said, some cats don't mind a covered box — as long as it's large, clean, and comfortable. That's why I chose the Frisco Extra-Large Hooded Cat Litter Box as the best covered litter box option. It has a larger interior compared to other covered boxes and a removable cover, giving you the flexibility to adjust the setup if your cat is hesitant. With the cover in place, a built-in charcoal filter provides extra odor control between cleanings. Even without the cover, the high sides help contain messes, which is especially useful for cats who tend to "elevator pee."

The box has a semi-opaque plastic door to help prevent odors from escaping. As you might guess, that just traps smells inside with your cat and can make the space feel even more confining. For these reasons, it's best to remove the door, which easily snaps off.

Best DIY

When it comes to creating a DIY litter box, a wide, flat plastic storage container is an ideal and cost-effective stand-in for a traditional box. In fact, Quagliozzi and Sung often recommend their clients consider this DIY version since many traditional litter boxes are too small for more than one cat to use several times a day.

The Sterilite 41-Quart Storage Box is made from durable, clear plastic. Its interior dimensions of 29 3/8 inches by 18 inches provide a cat with plenty of room to perform natural behaviors like digging and covering their waste. A box this big is especially important for extra-large breeds such as the Maine Coon, the biggest domestic cat, which can reach up to an astonishing 40 inches in length. Because the box is waterproof, it won't leak any excess urine that goes uncaptured by the litter.

With 6-inch-high sides, the box is shallow enough for most cats to enter and exit easily, but you can also cut a low front entry. Use a pair of wire cutters to cut the entrance to your desired height and width, then tap over the edges with duct tape. People with cats that aggressively scratch and kick their litter may need to do more floor cleanup than they would with a litter pan with higher sides.

Sung and Quagliozzi say cats need choices to feel secure, which includes having at least two litter box areas per cat in your home. Having more than one way in and out of a box can also make a big difference. While an uncovered box with unlimited exit routes is best, a covered box with both a top and side entrance gives your cat more control over how they come and go. If you'd prefer your cat not use the front entry, you can close the built-in sliding door, though our experts don't recommend it. The lid folds back for easy cleaning, and litter tracked onto the roof returns to the pan through perforations. The box comes with two reusable plastic liners and a scoop. However, Bell advises against using litter box liners. "Cats often get their claws stuck in the liner, tearing a hole in it, which causes them to dislike the box," she says.

What to look for in a cat litter box

The best cat litter boxes are spacious, easy for a cat to access, designed to fit their preferences, and simple for guardians to maintain.

Size: Sung says cats need a space at least 1.5 times their length to scratch at the litter and bury their waste. Many litter pans advertised as "large" or "jumbo" have far smaller dimensions than our top picks. You can determine whether a box is big enough by measuring your cat's length from its nose to the base of its tail and comparing it to the dimensions of the box.

Accessibility: Not every cat is agile or motivated enough to jump up into a litter box, and top-entry boxes can be especially challenging for some cats to access. When selecting a box, consider your cat's mobility needs. Kittens, senior cats, and those with injuries or mobility limitations may benefit from a box with an entry height of about 3 inches or less. If choosing a box with a high entry and sides, look for one made of a material that you can safely modify to create a lower entry that better suits your cat's needs.

Design: Quagliozzi says cats prefer a box that doesn't distract them from their business or require them to contort their body into unnatural positions. Look for boxes that offer easy entry and allow a cat to stand flat on all four paws rather than curved or angled boxes. An open-topped litter pan is the most universally accepted by cats of all types. Some cats may be intimidated by hooded or covered litter boxes, especially if the top is low enough that the cat must crouch to do their business.

Ease of cleaning: In general, boxes with simpler designs are easier to clean. Litter boxes should be scooped at least once a day, though more frequent scooping is ideal. Geller says healthy adult cats typically use the litter box two to five times a day for both peeing and pooping. However, factors like age and health can influence this. Senior cats may urinate more often due to conditions like kidney disease, while kittens usually urinate after each feeding and may poop up to three times a day. If having a cover over your litter pan makes you forget to scoop it daily, then a litter box without a hood is a more hygienic option. If you struggle to scoop your litter box daily, an automatic or smart litter box may be the best option, though even self-cleaning litter boxes still require deep cleaning. Our experts say you'll also need to deep-clean your litter boxes every four to six weeks using water and unscented dish soap.

Material: I included metal and plastic options in this guide to the best cat litter boxes. Plastic litter boxes have a lower upfront cost, but our experts recommend replacing them every six months or at the first sign of scratch marks. DeVoss says that no matter how well the box is cleaned, scratch marks accumulate bacteria and, therefore, odors. On the other hand, stainless steel and metal litter boxes may have a higher initial cost, but they offer a longer lifespan compared to plastic options. However, noise-averse people and cats alike may dislike the sound of cat claws on metal.

How we tested the best cat litter boxes

Over the past five years, we've researched popular litter boxes from major online retailers, selecting models to test based on criteria provided by the experts we consulted. Freelance reporter Shoshi Parks conducted the initial reporting for this guide and tested litter boxes with her two cats. Since then, freelance reporter Janelle Leeson and three Insider Reviews editors and reporters have tested additional boxes with six more cats. Although we haven't tested our DIY pick, it meets our experts' criteria and comes from a trusted brand.

Each litter box we tested was used for at least one month and evaluated using the methods described below. Unless a box required a specific type of litter to operate effectively, testers used their preferred substrates, including some of the best cat litters and best natural cat litters.

Ease of entry test: We measured the sides of each box and the height of any openings, and observed whether our cats appeared to have difficulty accessing the boxes. We also observed how our cats responded to each box, noting which they preferred to use more frequently.

Tracking test: For each litter box we tested, we collected the litter tracked onto the floor over three days and then compared the quantity of litter between boxes.

Cleaning test: We cleaned each litter box twice daily, observing how easy it was to access and remove the waste and how much litter stuck to the bottom and sides of the pan. After a month of use, we thoroughly cleaned each box, disposing of the litter and wiping it out completely. We noted how challenging the boxes were to clean and approximately how long it took.

Size test: For this test, we measured the length of each of our cats when standing in a relaxed position from the nose to the base of the tail. We then measured the length of each of the litter box contenders and compared the numbers. We favored larger litter boxes over smaller ones.

We also interviewed seven experts about feline litter box habits and the qualities to look for in a good litter box.

However, some cats may favor enclosed litter boxes that offer more privacy. Regardless of the style, the litter box should be at least 1.5 times the length of your cat from their nose to the base of the tail. Offering multiple types of litter boxes on different floors of your home and in various rooms gives your cat the opportunity to choose their preferred design and location. Ease of access is also important. "Make sure the sides aren't too high for your cat," says Dr. Jamie Richardson, chief medical officer at Small Door Veterinary in New York City. Boxes with tall sides and ones that are fully enclosed or top-entry can make some cats feel trapped, which may cause them to avoid the box altogether.

Do cats prefer open or hooded litter boxes?

Open-topped litter pans are the most widely accepted boxes by all types of cats. Some cats may feel trapped and be afraid to enter hooded or covered litter boxes, particularly if the interior height is so limited that they need to crouch while eliminating. "If your cat feels vulnerable and unsafe in the litter box, she may not take the time to bury her waste after elimination because she wants to get out of there quickly and prevent being ambushed in the box," Geller says. In some cases, this may lead your cat to avoid the box altogether. Additionally, Bell says covered boxes trap odors, intensifying the smell for cats, which can make them reluctant to use the box. Doors on litter box entrances, especially opaque or swinging ones, can make both matters worse.

What type of cat litter do vets recommend?

According to Dr. Liza Cahn, a veterinarian and consultant for Embrace Pet Insurance, most cats do best with litter that's unscented, clumping, and made of fine grains, such as clay litter. This type of litter closely resembles sand or dirt, which cats might choose to use in the wild.

Can a litter box be too big?

No. "Most cats won't mind a box that is a bit larger than they need, provided you keep it very clean," Richardson says. "The main concern is with litter boxes being too small."

How many litter boxes do I need?

Sung says a good general rule of thumb is to have one litter box per cat plus an extra. Dr. Karen Sueda, a board-certified veterinary behaviorist, notes that some multi-cat households can get by with fewer boxes if they're extra large and scooped at least twice a day. You should also place boxes in different areas throughout your home.

Where should I put my cat's litter box?

Litter boxes should be placed in multiple locations throughout your home, including on each level, and kept away from noisy appliances like washers or dryers that could startle your cat. While you'll want to avoid busy, high-traffic areas, the box should still be close to where your cat likes to spend time with you. Geller says that a cat's field of vision also matters. Rather than placing a litter box tightly in a corner, setting it about 12 inches away from walls can improve your cat's view of their surroundings and help them feel more secure. Richardson also notes that litter boxes should be separated from the feeding areas. "Cats typically don't like to go where they eat," she says.

How often should I clean the litter box?

To keep a cat happily using their litter boxes, our experts recommend scooping them at least once a day, if not several times. In addition to daily maintenance, the litter box should be cleaned with unscented dish soap and water every four to six weeks.

How frequently does a cat use their litter box?

The typical cat uses the litter box as many as half a dozen times a day, urinating two to four times and defecating once or twice. Some cats may go more or less frequently on average. Cleaning your litter boxes at least once a day will help you monitor for medical or behavioral changes that may indicate a health problem, such as feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD).

Why is my cat peeing outside the litter box?

"If your cat is urinating or defecating outside of the litter box, see your vet to rule out medical issues, such as urinary tract infection, cystitis, or arthritis," Cahn says. A US Navy fighter jet hit the smokestacks of two Iranian tankers on Friday, disabling both ships.
The tankers were sailing in violation of the blockade of Iran's ports, the US military said.
It's the latest example of the US using strikes to enforce the blockade.

A US Navy fighter jet fired on the smokestacks of two Iranian-flagged oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman on Friday, disabling both of the blockade-running vessels, the American military said.

The Navy has used force multiple times to disable Iranian commercial vessels since the US began a maritime blockade of Iran's ports last month.

US Central Command, which oversees American military operations in the Middle East, said that M/T Sea Star III and M/T Sevda were sailing into an Iranian port on Friday in violation of the blockade.

CENTCOM said that an F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet launched from the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush and fired precision munitions into the smokestacks of the unladen tankers to disable the large ships, which the military described as "non-compliant."

It's unclear what warnings the oil tankers received prior to the engagement. It's also unclear what munitions the Super Hornet fired to disable them. CENTCOM declined to provide additional details on the incident.

Super Hornet fighter jets can carry a mix of different armaments on the weapon hardpoints along the wings, including precision glide bombs and anti-ship missiles. These aircraft are also equipped with an internal 20 mm M61A2 six-barrel rotary cannon.

Friday's incident comes two days after a Super Hornet launched from aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and fired several rounds from its 20 mm cannon into the rudder of M/T Hasna, disabling that Iranian-flagged oil tanker as well. The Hasna, like the Sea Star III and Sevda, was also sailing in the Gulf of Oman en route to an Iranian port.

"All three vessels are no longer transiting to Iran," CENTCOM said on Friday.

In mid-April, the Trump administration announced a naval blockade of maritime traffic entering and exiting Iran's ports to put pressure on its economy, which is dependent on oil exports.

More than 20 US warships and 200 aircraft, including those based on the two aircraft carriers operating in the Middle East, are involved in the blockade, which has turned around dozens of commercial vessels since it began.

In late April, Navy destroyer USS Spruance fired nine inert rounds from its 5-inch deck gun into the engine room of an Iranian-flagged vessel trying to run the blockade, marking a rare use of force by the US against a non-combat ship.

The strikes disabled the M/V Touska, which was then boarded by US Marines.

"US forces in the Middle East remain committed to full enforcement of the blockade of vessels entering or leaving Iran," said Adm. Brad Cooper, the CENTCOM commander, in a statement on Friday. "Our highly trained men and women in uniform are doing incredible work."

The naval blockade is one of several ongoing US military activities around Iran since the ceasefire started in early April and Operation Epic Fury, the large-scale American bombing campaign against the country, concluded.

The US has also launched missions to clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz and to provide a defensive umbrella for commercial vessels transiting the strategic waterway with warships and aircraft.

On Thursday, US forces thwarted an Iranian attack on three Navy destroyers in the Strait involving missiles, drones, and small boats.

CENTCOM said that it targeted Iranian military facilities responsible for the attacks, including missile and drone launch sites, command and control facilities, and surveillance infrastructure. The exchange of fire threatens the fragile ceasefire.

After less than a year on the market, the Nintendo Switch 2 is going up in price.

The company announced in a press release on its website that the device is getting a price increase in every major region, including the United States. Customers in the U.S. will pay $50 more for the console, as its price is going from $449 to $499. Nintendo did not delve into specifics in the press release, citing only "changes in market conditions," but this is almost certainly a response to the global memory shortage driven by high demand for AI data center construction.

That same memory shortage was the culprit behind recent price hikes on PlayStation 5 consoles and Motorola phones, among other tech products. Even if the reasoning is understandable, it must be stated that video game consoles rarely rise in price over time in a normal economic environment. The opposite usually occurs, typically after at least a few years on the market. Nintendo having to hike the Switch 2's price less than a year after its June 2025 launch is fairly unprecedented, at least in recent memory.

Nintendo said the changes go into effect on Sept. 1 of this year, so if you want a Switch 2, that's your deadline to get one for $450.

Appliance maker Whirlpool says it's seeing firsthand the damage the Iran war has done to the economy.

In its latest earnings report on Wednesday, the company cut its guidance for earnings per share to a range of $3 to $3.50 from the prior outlook of about $6. The stock cratered as much as 18% before paring the loss.

Zooming out, Whirlpool said the Iran war has done major damage to the industry amid a historic drop in US consumer confidence.

"[The] War in Iran resulted in recession-level industry decline in the U.S. as consumer confidence collapsed in late February and March," the report stated.

News that the Iran war may be close to an end boosted markets on Wednesday, but Whirlpool's statements highlight the wide-ranging economic impacts of the war, which has disrupted global supply chains.

That doesn't just mean higher prices for items made by Whirlpool, who owns brands such as Maytag and KitchenAid. Rising costs of both gasoline and jet fuel are making it more costly to ship items, particularly large appliances such as dishwashers and stoves.

Price increases from firms like Whirlpool are in line with predictions from finance pros who noted that the Iran war would likely spark a second wave of household inflation.

The home appliance industry is often seen as a bellwether for the broader economy, as sales offer insight into how willing consumers are to make big-ticket purchases.

Whirlpool's warning follows a historic drop in consumer sentiment. The University of Michigan's consumer-sentiment index fell to 49.8% in April as the Iran war dragged on. That figure is the lowest on record for the month and the worst it has been since June 2022, when shoppers were contending with surging inflation.

Whirlpool CFO Roxanne Warner told Yahoo Finance that the Iran war wasn't the only factor that impacted the company recently, also noting March's severe winter weather. But she highlighted that demand for large home appliances throughout the US and Canada is reaching lows that call to mind recession-levels.

"These are levels that last time you've seen was in the Great Financial Crisis," she said.

When you put your car into reverse, it's important that the rearview camera displays what's happening behind you right now, not a while ago. Sadly, a pretty high number of Teslas are at danger of failing on that simple task.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Wednesday that Tesla is recalling 218,868 vehicles in the U.S. (via Reuters). The issue is as follows: when the car is put into reverse, the rearview camera display might be delayed "for up to 11 seconds."

The recall covers a number of Model 3, Model Y, Model ‌S, ⁠and Model X vehicles.

Tesla has already fixed the issue via an over-the-air software update, so owners needn't do anything aside from accepting the update.

Interestingly, this is not the first time Tesla has recalled vehicles over rearview camera issues. In 2024, the company recalled nearly 200,000 Model S, Model Y, and Model X vehicles over a bug that could prevent the rearview camera image from displaying at all.

Adapted from Homer's epic, The Odyssey follows Odysseus's (Damon) decades-long quest to return home to Ithaca following the fall of Troy. He may be the wiliest of strategists, but are those wiles enough to face down the wrath of the gods?

While Odysseus weathers encounters with monsters like Polyphemus and Scylla and Charybdis, his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland) await his return to Ithaca. They've been overrun with potential suitors for Penelope, including the slimy Antinous (Pattinson). And when I say slimy, I mean rotten lettuce levels of slimy. Seriously, the trailer is worth the watch for Pattinson's nasty threats alone.

Damon, Hathaway, Holland, and Pattinson are only the tip of the iceberg of The Odyssey's extensive, star-studded cast. Zendaya stars the as the goddess Athena, Charlize Theron plays nymph Calypso, and Jon Bernthal and Benny Safdie play kingly brothers Menelaus and Agamemnon.

The film also stars Lupita Nyong’o, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, Will Yun Lee, Jimmy Gonzalez, Elliot Page, and more.
