There are plenty of reasons to visit Florida in the fall.

I've lived in Florida for 25 years and believe fall is the best time of year to visit.
The temperatures and humidity drop in the fall, making outdoor activities feel more enjoyable.
With the peak summer rush over, many hotels or theme parks offer seasonal discounts.

Summer in Florida can often bring intense heat, humidity, and crowded attractions. However, the fall season tells a completely different story.

The change of season often brings cooler weather, fewer tourists, and many fun activities and festivals.

After living here for over 25 years, it's my favorite time of year to explore the Sunshine State. Here's why I always tell tourists to visit in the cooler months.

Many major attractions feel less crowded this time of year.

One of my favorite things about Florida in the fall is how much calmer everything feels. Schools are back in session, so the huge summer crowds at theme parks, beaches, cities, and small towns have typically thinned out.

This means visitors can take their time exploring attractions, it's easier to snag a prime spot on the sand, and reservations at popular restaurants feel more attainable without the stress of peak-season tourism.

The temperatures start to feel more enjoyable.

By fall, temperatures start to cool down, and the humidity drops just enough to make the outdoors enjoyable again.

Taking a stroll on the beach, exploring a national park, or sipping a coffee at a sidewalk café are much more enjoyable when you don't feel like you're melting.

However, the Florida sun is still intense, so I recommend packing shorts, sunscreen, and a hat to stay protected during outdoor fun.

I think fall is the perfect time to get out and experience nature.

If you love spending time outdoors like I do, the fall is the perfect time to experience the state's natural wonders.

In addition to the cooler weather that makes spending time outside more enjoyable, Florida is full of fun activities that are best enjoyed in the fall months.

For example, bioluminescent waters are still visible in places like Merritt Island, and many companies offer a glow-in-the-dark kayaking experience without the intense summer heat.

Fall foliage even appears later in the season in the North and Central regions, where bald cypress trees along the rivers transform into shades of gold and red.

Florida is home to a great variety of fall festivals.

Florida's fall calendar is filled with festivals, and there's typically something for everyone.

For example, I love indulging my inner foodie at Epcot's International Food & Wine Festival, which runs through November 21. Here, I can try food and drinks from around the world without ever leaving Orlando.

Also, if you're a seafood lover, I think visiting the Pensacola Seafood Festival is a must. From September 25 through 27, local restaurants serve fresh seafood tapas-style, with live music and small-town charm.

Music lovers have options too, from jazz and blues events to concerts scattered across the state. Cultural and arts festivals also pop up throughout the season in cities like Sarasota and St. Augustine.

Halloween is a major event.

If you visit in late September or October, you'll quickly realize Florida goes all-in on Halloween.

There's something for everyone, from Universal's Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando to pumpkin patches, haunted houses, and ghost tours in historic towns like St. Augustine.

Many smaller local farms also offer daytime events for a more family-friendly experience.

Where to watch South Park in the US

You can upgrade to Premium for $14 a month, which unlocks ad-free on-demand programming, Showtime content, and a CBS live stream.

How to watch South Park from anywhere

New episodes of South Park will also be available on Paramount Plus on Thursdays in select regions, including Canada and Australia. A funny thing is probably going to happen this afternoon: The Fed will raise rates, and investors will cheer it on.

Normally, when the central bank raises interest rates, the market reacts the opposite way. Higher borrowing costs are basically kryptonite for businesses' growth plans.

Unfortunately for them, months of data have shown inflation isn't getting closer to the Fed's 2% target, and investors appear ready to take their medicine. The market has essentially priced in a rate hike — the CME FedWatch tool has the probability of one at almost 95%. And if investors really hate one thing, it's a surprise.

But there's another reason the market is hoping for a rate hike. It would go a long way toward signaling Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is committed to maintaining the central bank's independence and is willing to go against President Donald Trump's wishes.

The president has made it clear he wants lower rates, reiterating that point after last week's blowout jobs report. A booming job market would actually disincentivize the Fed from lowering rates, as it risks further fueling inflation, but I digress.

Most market experts believe the White House shouldn't influence the Fed. The focus should be on monetary policy, not politics. And concerns about whether that would remain the case under Warsh's leadership followed him throughout the nomination process.

This afternoon's decision will show whether those worries were warranted.

Things won't get easier for Warsh following today's decision.

The next time the Fed will make a call on rates is October 28. That's less than a week before the all-important midterm elections. There will be a lot of sensitivities around any monetary decisions made right before Americans head to the polls.

As it stands, the market is divided, with nearly 43% expecting a second rate hike in late October. It's worth noting that hikes or cuts commonly come in multiples as the central bank needs more than a one-off to address broader trends.

Traders will have plenty to chew on in the meantime, though. There's Treasury yield volatility, the gloom-or-boom of the AI trade, and the ongoing war in Iran. We'll also be in the thick of earnings season right when the Fed is ready to make its decision.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. We've still got today's decision to worry about. Joe Ciolli, author of BI's First Trade, outlined the biggest storylines to watch heading into the decision.

Today, Amazon announced that its annual Prime Big Deal Days event will run from Tuesday, Oct. 6, through Wednesday, Oct. 7. The 48-hour sale for Prime members, often referred to as "October Prime Day," serves as the retail giant's unofficial kickoff for the holiday shopping season.

Amazon moved up its flagship Prime Day sale from mid-July to late June this year, reportedly because of the timing of the FIFA World Cup and the U.S. 250th anniversary. But Prime Big Deal Days is happening during its usual fall time slot. Here's what you should know before you shop.

What is Prime Big Deal Days?

Prime Big Deal Days is a two-day, members-only sale that Amazon puts on every year in early October, a little over a month before Black Friday.

Amazon held its first fall Prime event in 2022, positioning it as "a chance to kick off the holiday shopping season early." That year, the event was called the Prime Early Access Sale. In 2023, Amazon renamed it to Prime Big Deal Days and expanded its scope to cover "everything Prime members need for Autumn," including early holiday offers and deals on seasonal household essentials like groceries.

What to expect once Prime Big Deal Days starts

Beyond the Amazon of it all, Prime Big Deal Days normally features deals on products from popular brands like Apple, Bissell, Bose, Dyson, Eufy, Keurig, KitchenAid, Lego, Ninja, Samsung, and Sony. That includes gadgets like headphones, earbuds, laptops, tablets, TVs, gaming gear, and robot vacuums.

We expect Prime Big Deal Days tech deals to be especially popular this year, given the ongoing RAM shortage that's forced extensive price hikes across the market. Just last month, Amazon itself raised the prices of over 20 of its devices due to "significant increases in memory and storage component costs," a company rep told Fortune.

In a blog post, Amazon said it will drop new deals three times per day while Prime Big Deal Days is live: at 3 a.m., 11 a.m., and 4 p.m. ET. These limited-time offers will be called "Today's Big Deals" and involve "some of the best savings of the season’s newest models and brands," it said, including Shark and Anker's Soundcore line.

Will any retailers be competing with Prime Big Deal Days?

Other major retailers typically run their own sales alongside Prime Big Deal Days.

So far, Target has confirmed that it will host a concurrent Circle Deal Days sale from Oct. 6 to 7. The event is open to members of its Target Circle loyalty program, which is free to join, though upgrading to the paid Target Circle 360 membership tier gets you early access on Oct. 5.

Do you need to be a Prime member to shop Prime Big Deal Days?

Like summer's main Prime Day sale, Prime Big Deal Days is only open to members of Amazon's Prime program. However, you're still eligible for the deals even if you're only on a trial Prime membership. Most people get 30 days free, but college students and those ages 18 to 24 get six whole months of Prime for free through the Prime for Young Adults program.

Anthropics CEO urges the industry to slow down, and Sam Altman agrees

In a lengthy essay published Saturday morning, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said that the AI industry needs to deliberately slow the pace of AI development. Amodei proposed a three-point plan he's calling "pacing the frontier," and it is a striking message from the head of a company racing toward what could be the largest IPO in history.

Soon after Amodei shared the essay on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly accepted his rival's proposal. "I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier. This has been a primary topic of discussions we've had at OpenAI in recent weeks."

On his personal site, Amodei frames his argument around two recent developments he says convinced him the industry needs more caution. The first is a sharp acceleration in AI capabilities since the summer, driven by models increasingly being used to help build the next generation of AI, a phenomenon called recursive self-improvement. The second, and more notable, concern was the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident, in which a swarm of rogue AI agents escaped a secure sandbox and attacked a third party.

Because of this, Amodei wants to offer a fix but is explicit that he doesn't want to freeze model training. Amodei's proposed three-point plan is as follows:

Anthropic will unilaterally grant outside evaluators (such as the safety group METR) permanent, employee-like access to verify its practices, similar to how bank regulators sometimes embed with financial firms.
AI companies within democracies should coordinate on shared safety standards.
Third, and hardest, he wants that coordination extended globally, including with China, while doubting Beijing would reliably comply.

He also paired this with some hawkish asks, like continued chip export restrictions on China and tighter security against model theft. Amodei framed these as necessary to preserve the U.S. lead over "authoritarian regimes," while also giving the industry room to pace safely.

While in a vacuum, this is the kind of thing you'd want a major AI CEO to ask for, it's part of a much bigger battle in the industry over who defines AI safety policy. Weeks earlier, OpenAI — which had opposed California's SB 53 frontier AI safety law — reversed course and called for the law to be strengthened in the wake of the Hugging Face incident. One analyst told Fortune the move might be genuine, but could also help OpenAI cement its lead by raising the bar for smaller rivals while signaling seriousness to regulators after its own stumble.

TechCrunch notes that coordination between the leading labs seems unlikely given the "apparent animosity" between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Amodei, as well as concerns that a coordinated slowdown could invite antitrust scrutiny.

Additionally, Anthropic is reportedly targeting a Nasdaq listing as early as mid-October, at a valuation that could reach roughly $2 trillion. A high-profile essay casting the company as uniquely safety-conscious could be a boon as it opens its doors to outside evaluators.

None of this makes Amodei's underlying concerns wrong; researchers across labs have flagged similar risks. Just this week, an Anthropic employee left the company and publicly accused Anthropic of recklessness, warning of "out of control" AI.

Nasdaq's tech IPO success continues, challenging NYSE's historical dominance in large listings.
Anthropic's IPO plans emerge amid AI security risk discussions, led by former Anthropic staff.

Anthropic has selected the Nasdaq for its potential IPO, according to a person familiar with their plans.

The company, which has been targeting an October listing, has given Nasdaq another big win, according to a person familiar with the matter. Nasdaq secured the coveted SpaceX listing earlier this year. SpaceX was valued at $1.75 trillion, and some estimates have put Anthropic at $2 trillion, though that figure has not yet been finalized.

The record-setting size of these IPOs, combined with the dearth in tech listings in recent years, has made winning this competition particularly valuable. Both hope to be seen as the home for future AI IPOs.

Anthropic is preparing to IPO at a time when OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says that it wouldn't go public right now amid the controversy surrounding existential threats from AI. That risk gained more attention last week after a viral tweet from a former Anthropic employee, warning of a greater than 10% human extinction risk.

Historically, the New York Stock Exchange has won many of the largest listings, so this year has shown a marked shift. Nasdaq has been consistently strong in tech IPOs, with listings on its exchange a prerequisite for inclusion in the Nasdaq 100 Index.

In terms of how Anthropic ultimately trades, this decision likely matters little. There isn't a definitive answer on whether companies perform better on one exchange versus another.

One key difference between the exchanges concerns market-maker mechanics. They have different processes for determining the opening price on the first day of trading, and high-volume IPOs can cause delays and confusion. Nasdaq experienced technical issues on the first day of Facebook's 2012 IPO.

Anthropic's IPO filing has not yet been made public, but the company will need to release its financials at least 15 days before it begins its investor road show.

Scientists knew Mercury was shrinking. They didnt know the true extent.

The solar system's smallest planet has suffered significant shrinkage, drawing up 30 percent more than scientists even previously estimated.

Mercury, which orbits closest to the sun, is a tiny rocky world that has continuously leaked heat into space since its sizzly formation 4.5 billion years ago. As its heavy iron core cools, the entire planet shrinks, like a grape transforming into a raisin in the sun. Its outer crust buckles and cracks around it, but on a planet scale, those surface wrinkles translate into huge cliffs and mountainous ridges.

A new study reveals Mercury has lost up to 14.5 miles of its diameter since birth. That might not seem like much until you realize that the planet is only 3,000 miles wide overall. For decades, researchers may have underestimated the planet's contraction because the rough terrain was obscuring the true extent of the damage.

"Thirty percent is a little bit surprising, but the corrected amount of contraction actually makes sense to me," said Gaku Nishiyama, a planetary scientist at the German Aerospace Center Institute of Space Research and lead author on the study, in a statement.

A barrage of meteors pock Mercury's surface, cratering the land and hurling giant shattered rock across the planet. The rubble seems to create a fresh gravel spread, concealing the planet's wrinkles.

While testing Nishiyama's hypothesis, a team of researchers discovered a clear pattern: The rugged regions contained the fewest visible wrinkles. Around major impacts, like the massive Rachmaninoff crater, tectonic cracks disappeared almost entirely under thick layers of debris.

"We compared a global map of Mercury's surface roughness with maps of shortening structures and contraction," Nishiyama said. "Mercury appears to have shrunk considerably more than what the visible tectonic record alone suggested."

After accounting for these hidden features, the researchers recalculated Mercury's total contraction. The results were published in the Geophysical Research Letters journal this week.

For scientists, the findings could resolve a long-standing tension. Previous estimates suggested far less shrinking than physics predicted, leaving researchers uncomfortable with their understanding of how planets cool. By correcting the math, astronomers may be able to unlock clues about Mercury's original temperature and how other shrinking rocky worlds, like our own moon, evolve over time.

A faster shrinkage rate may mean Mercury holds a much larger metal core that contains fewer light elements, such as silicon, than previously thought. That matters because a larger iron core would rewrite what scientists know about Mercury's birth. More metal would strongly suggest the planet survived a catastrophic collision with another body in its ancient history, an event that could have stripped away most of its rocky crust. An oversized core might also explain how such a tiny world kept its interior churning, a necessity for its global magnetic field.

Scientists won't have to wait long to verify the team's work with fresh data. The BepiColombo spacecraft, a joint mission of the European Space Agency and Japan's JAXA, is on its last leg of its space journey to Mercury. It's expected to enter orbit around the planet in November.

Equipped with advanced lasers, BepiColombo will scan Mercury's surface to detect fine details in its surface features that earlier space missions missed. Only two missions — NASA's Mariner 10 and Messenger — have visited the planet before, and only Messenger has ever orbited it.

We've taken our freshly 3-year-old daughter to several big-name concerts, and we have no regrets.
I'm not going to stop enjoying concerts and evening events just because I have a child.
At times, it's been isolating to not have parent friends who want to join us.

My partner and I have always enjoyed going to live events, festivals, and concerts. The city we live in has so many nearby events that it is basically impossible to be bored.

Now that we have a child, we don't just seek out kid-focused events; we still go see the bands and performers we enjoy — even if they happen in the evening.

We often choose to keep our toddler out later than most other parents to enjoy these events. Some people may feel differently, but I have no regrets about bringing our daughter along to enjoy a fun night out with her parents.

I've always been an extrovert

I didn't suddenly stop enjoying concerts and evening events out of the house around fun people. I may even crave and appreciate them more now.

Over the years, I've been told "life is never boring around you," asked "how do you always know what fun stuff is going on?" and, most recently, jokingly crowned "the queen of local events" by a friend. I didn't think I was doing anything much differently than others for the first few years, but I have finally come to own these truths. There are so many vibrant activities to enjoy out in the community.

It's hard to find other parents like us

At times, it's been isolating to not have parent friends who like going out as much as we do, or much at all. I get why many don't want to go to a concert that starts at 8 p.m. because they don't want to miss their kid's bedtime or secure childcare. That's just not something we let hold us back.

We're always open to company, but it's been hard to find. Rarely, some friends will also bring their kids to a fun late-evening event, but mostly we've just made peace with our toddler exploring the world with us in a nontraditional manner.

Our toddler seems to like being out on the town

At a year old, our daughter was a regular at our local art crawls and art museum's after-hours DJ parties and even got her first few autographs. She bops with joy (while wearing protective headphones) at almost every concert we attend, and still occasionally stays up past 9 p.m., or later, if the situation warrants it.

By the time she turned 3, the big-name concerts that we took our daughter to included Tyler Rich (her first headphone autograph!), Uncle Kracker, Keith Urban (she was up way past 11 p.m. that night, she didn't sleep like we had expected her to), Dasha/Jordan Davis (up way past 11 p.m. again), Jelly Roll, and Gwen Stefani.

A third of the time, she is busy dancing her heart out, another third she is befriending whoever is behind us or next to us (or any nearby dogs), and therest of the time, she might fall asleep, need a potty break or diaper change, want another snack, or get a little too antsy so we'll walk her around a little bit to reset.

No, our toddler isn't invited to every concert we attend. She was not invited to see Kesha or Pitbull when I went out for a girls' night. Nor did she see Brooks & Dunn. For that one, we split a babysitter and carpooled with friends. But she has come to basically all other big evening events with us.

This year, our threenager has enjoyed seeing Jo Dee Messina, Alana Springsteen, Fitz and the Tantrums, Fake Happy (a Paramore tribute band), Teddy Swims, and Miranda Lambert. Up next, we're taking her to see Brad Paisley.

For us, this is the logical choice

In parent math, the choice about whether to bring my child to concerts is pretty clear.

How can I accurately estimate when the openers will finish and when the main artist will play? It's hard, I've tried.

How crazy will the traffic and parking be around the concert? Sometimes friends or prior experiences can help guesstimate, but that could always be wrong. That's not ideal when you have a sitter waiting back at home.

The author said that the logistics of securing a sitter and communicating with them while she is at a concert can be complex and expensive, so it's easier to just bring her child.

Also, do I want to ask around for a babysitter and pay them $15 to $20, or more, per hour? Do I want to go to the concert so badly that I'd add $100 or more to the cost, prepare the house, have backup plans for various worst-case scenarios, and make sure we're monitoring our phones constantly through (probably) loud music? It's pretty unlikely.

Does our daughter enjoy music and people? An enthusiastic yes. So that's the option I'm picking.

After living through years of COVID protocols during our engagement and the formative years of our marriage, it's so joyful to appreciate music and energetic events in a crowd of friendly people and to watch our daughter learn to do the same.

It's OK if sleep schedules are a little off sometimes — for us, it's worth it. And, luckily, my pediatric sleep consultant said that what we're doing is fine. Thank goodness.

Nvidia may bankroll Anthropics massive IPO

Anthropic is reportedly in talks with Nvidia to secure funding for its upcoming IPO, according to an exclusive report from Reuters. If the deal goes through, it'd make Anthropic's IPO one of the largest stock market debuts ever.

Reuters report cites two people familiar with the discussions between the Claude maker and Nvidia, although they weren't at liberty to speak publicly. According to Reuters, Anthropic is looking to raise as much as $100 billion in the offering, which would raise the company's valuation to around $2 trillion.

That would put Anthropic in the same financial weight class as some of the world's largest public companies, despite not yet being publicly traded itself. One source told Reuters that Nvidia is considering investing up to $10 billion as part of the deal, though the terms are still being worked out and could change.

Anthropic declined to comment on the discussions, and Nvidia did not respond to Reuters' request for comment.

Known as anchor investing, lining up a major investor ahead of an IPO has become common practice for companies planning especially large listings. A well-known backer buying in early can reassure the broader market that the offering is a safe bet. Reuters noted that Nvidia and Amazon played similar roles in chip designer Arm's IPO, while Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund did the same for SpaceX.

If it goes forward, Anthropic's IPO would extend a wave of major stock listings this year, following Elon Musk's SpaceX going public in June. Citing Dealogic data, Reuters reported that U.S. IPOs, excluding blank-check companies, had already raised a record $137 billion through the end of August.

Nvidia and Anthropic already have significant financial ties. Reuters reported that Nvidia agreed last November to invest up to $10 billion in Anthropic as part of a broader partnership under which Anthropic committed to spending $30 billion on Microsoft's Azure cloud service, which runs on Nvidia chips.

A new investment tied to the IPO would further deepen that relationship.

Anthropic found Russian and Chinese threat actors using its artificial intelligence chatbot Claude as a weapons engineering assistant, helping develop drone software, anti-torpedo weapons systems, and more.

The extensive report, published Thursday, also detailed activities by a Yemen-based weapons engineering cell and an unspecified Iran-nexus threat actor. The latter used Claude to collect targeting data on US naval forces.

The findings provide examples of a frontier American AI model being used to advance adversarial military capabilities.

Anthropic's report on the misuses of Claude, from cybersecurity and bioweapons research to engineering autonomous military drone swarms, comes as the Trump administration and Silicon Valley navigate the development of AI amid potential security and safety concerns. Anthropic said it identified problematic activities through its own investigations, banned the accounts involved, and strengthened safeguards.

According to the report, a small, specialized group of Russian actors tied to a regional university, not a Russian state entity, "used Claude to build the core software system, including the drones' shared swarm memory and fault-tolerant coordination logic," as well as code for attack, observation, and return to base behaviors, a terminal guidance system for steering drones to their targets, and additional elements for using drones against enemy operators.

Anthropic said that the group built software that could select targets and order attacks without human input, and then they tested it on actual hardware rather than solely in simulations.

"The actors designed the platform for autonomous lethal engagement," Anthropic said, adding that "the onboard model could select targets" as well as "issue detonation commands without a human in the loop."

The Russian actors, identified by Anthropic as a specialized "freelance" operation, also developed a tool and trained it on scraped Ukrainian combat footage to determine enemy and friendly assets, and used a fixed coordinate in the Donetsk area of Ukraine as a demonstration strike point.

Anthropic said it identified and investigated the nine accounts related to this work. The "actors circumvented our geographic access controls by routing traffic through commercial virtual private servers." The threat actors, the company said, created their accounts between late 2025 and early 2026 before starting operations in May.

The Anthropic report also called attention to a China-based threat actor that used Claude in work on an anti-torpedo weapons system, aiming to produce a proposal for the Chinese navy.

They used Claude to write Chinese-language technical specifications for an anti-torpedo fire control system, put together a more than 200-page proposal, compile an executive briefing deck, compare the design against specific US programs using publicly available information, and refine drafts by having Claude role-play as a hostile reviewer.

"They then generated a Chinese-language briefing on US Navy systems from open-source reporting," the report said. Anthropic discovered the activity as part of internal investigations into suspected weapons development and banned the account.

In another case, Anthropic found a China-based user relying on Claude to gather intelligence on directed-energy weapons.

Separately, Anthropic said it uncovered a weapons engineering operation in northern Yemen, an area where the Iran-backed Houthis control large swaths of territory, that used Claude Code to do the work of human software engineers. Their sessions were focused on guidance, navigation, and control software for rockets and missiles. The company said that these threat actors used Claude to run simulations and diagnose failures.

"We do not have evidence the actors succeeded in fielding an operational device; but they did test-fire a guided rocket," Anthropic said. "This field test appears to have failed: within hours, the actors returned to Claude to work out why it failed."

In another instance, Anthropic identified an unidentified Iran-nexus threat actor using Claude to collect and analyze publicly available information to come up with targeting recommendations against US forces.

"The compiled material included a roster of US personnel scraped from captions on public military photographs," the company revealed, as well as "publicly accessible ship and aircraft transponder identifiers; commercial satellite-imagery query scripts; and an inventory of public websites that exposed US naval movements."

The company said that it banned the account, shared the information with government authorities, and developed detections for future misuse.

Anthropic's report comes days after researcher Jacob Coxon resigned from the company in protest of the AI industry's race to continue developing models, warning in an X post that "the people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade."

Apple's next big iOS update is finally on the launch pad.

At its "Surprise and Shine" event on Sept. 9, Apple showed off new wares like the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, the foldable iPhone Duo, new Apple Watches, and the AirPods 5. One of the smaller (but still significant) nuggets of news to come out of the event concerned iOS 27. Specifically, when you can finally download it to your iPhone.

Users with compatible iPhones will be able to install iOS 27 on Monday, Sept. 14.

How to download iOS 27

If you have one of the compatible iPhones (keep scrolling for the full list), then starting on Monday, Sept. 14, you can look for iOS 27. Apple typically releases a new iOS at 10:00 a.m. PT (1:00 p.m. ET).

Follow these steps to get iOS 27 set up on your iPhone:

Go to the Settings app on your phone
Go to General
Go to Software Update and wait as the system checks for new updates
When iOS 27 appears, you can download and install the new OS

You can also click "Automatic Updates" and turn this feature to "On." That way, iOS 27 should automatically download once it's available (your phone must be locked and charging to download automatic updates).

An AI stock crash would spark a US recession and global economic stagnation, Fitch warns

Fitch Ratings says a US recession is coming if the AI bubble pops.
The firm modeled the economic damage that could ensue if AI stocks were to drop 35% over six months.
Economic weakness would likely spread worldwide, resulting in global stagnation, analysts wrote.

The bursting of the AI bubble would open Pandora's box for the US and world economy, one of America's top credit-rating agencies is warning.

Fitch Ratings flagged the risk of cascading economic damage if AI stocks were to see a sharp correction. In a scenario where stock prices in the AI sector were to drop 35% over the course of six months, the US would likely plunge into an economic downturn, with weakness spreading across the rest of the world over the next year, the firm wrote in a report outlining the most likely chain of events on Tuesday.

"A severe AI-related equity price shock — that could possibly result from a major re-evaluation of the ability of AI investments to generate returns — would likely entail a US recession," a team of analysts led by Alex Muscatelli, a director at the firm, wrote.

In the recession scenario, the firm estimated that GDP could contract as much as 1.5% in the second quarter of next year. Private capital spending would also likely fall more than 6%, and US investment would contract 4.8% as firms reassess their AI spending plans, Fitch estimated.

A consumer slowdown, a hit to household wealth, and higher unemployment are also likely consequences of an AI market crash, analysts added. They noted that the scenario was not their base case for the AI trade.

More researchers on Wall Street have flagged the US economy's growing dependence on AI recently, with some concluding that the majority of GDP growth is being driven by investment in AI and business activity in the tech sector. Fixed investment in the information technology sector accounted for 5% of GDP in the second quarter, up a percentage point compared to before the pandemic, Fitch estimated.

Much of the economy is also being powered by the wealth effect of higher stock prices, the phenomenon in which people spend more because they feel wealthy when the stock market is booming.

US households held $55.1 trillion in stocks and mutual fund shares in the first quarter, accounting for over 30% of all wealth held by households in the US, according to the latest Fed data.

The total valuation of the US stock market relative to GDP also stands at around 200%, a post-war record, Fitch said.

In the firm's risk scenario, a US recession would likely spill over and impact the rest of the world economy. Analysts estimated that global GDP would likely fall below 1% over the course of 2027, a rate "consistent with global stagnation or recession in per capita terms," the report said. A recession is technically defined as a period of at least two quarters of negative GDP growth.

Stock prices in countries like China, Japan, and the UK are also likely to drop by around 15% in Fitch's bear case scenario.

While fears about the AI bubble percolate, the market has also turned its attention to more existential fears about AI. Some high-profile researchers in the industry have warned lately of the impact of artificial intelligence on humanity. X users turned an Anthropic researcher's extinction warning into a dramatic resignation meme.
The fake resignations invoked Looney Tunes, pop lyrics, and other absurd workplace catastrophes.
The jokes make light of growing fears that advanced AI could pose an existential threat to humanity.

The AI world has turned one researcher's extinction warning into its latest copy-and-paste meme: resign dramatically, accuse your company of racing recklessly toward disaster, then reveal that the supposed threat is a self-painting fake tunnel.

The trend was sparked by Jacob Coxon, a former Anthropic researcher who previously worked at OpenAI. On Wednesday, he announced his resignation from Anthropic with a stark warning about the AI race.

"Neither company is acting responsibly," Coxon wrote on X of Anthropic and OpenAI. "They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives."

Dozens of X users have since mirrored Coxon's grave, tightly structured announcement — only to swap the prospect of human extinction for more ordinary, and absurd, professional hazards.

Jae Holzman, a senior reporter at Heatmap, wrote that they had resigned from the Acme Corporation after years of "pre-gag research" at Acme Paint. In a close riff on Coxon's warning, Holzman said Acme was racing toward "self-painting fake tunnel technology."

That is a reference to the "Looney Tunes" cartoons in which Wile E. Coyote paints a fake tunnel on a rock face; the Road Runner runs through it, while Coyote crashes into the wall.

Designer Isha Taghvaei's widely viewed post started with Coxon's exact opening before giving way to lyrics from Natasha Bedingfield's 2004 pop hit, "Unwritten." In place of self-improving superintelligence, Taghvaei wrote that OpenAI and Anthropic were "releasing their inhibitions" and "feeling the rain on their skin."

Software engineer Alan Rice used the same Coxon-style resignation template before pivoting to "plants and birds and rocks and things," lyrics from "A Horse With No Name," the 1971 song by the rock band America.

And Kabir Sethi, growth lead at Phoenix Trade, adapted Coxon's warning for crypto: His blockchain employer was racing toward "seamless global trading of any asset" and gambling with his money.

The jokes poke fun at a very real fear among some people building frontier AI. Coxon said that leading labs privately fear AI could cause human extinction by the end of the decade.

Evan Hubinger, who leads alignment stress testing at Anthropic, backed Coxon's broader warning, saying he believed there was a greater-than-10% chance AI could kill all humans within the next decade.

Geoffrey Hinton, meanwhile, has said a 10% chance of AI killing humanity is not unreasonable, while Toby Ord, the Oxford researcher and author of "The Precipice," puts the risk at about one in 10 by 2100.

Startup workers have also found their own existential dangers. Ian Tracey, a senior staff software engineer working on applied AI at Ramp, joked that the fintech company was racing toward "self-closing books" with no plan for what happens when businesses save too much time and money.

Fresh Middle East tensions have sent oil prices spiking again.
Brent oil is inching back toward $100 a barrel, hovering around six-week highs.
As oil rises, gas prices in the US hit a Labor Day record.

Markets are worried about oil again.

Oil prices have jumped, sparking a sharp surge in US gas prices that culminated in record high prices at the pump for the Labor Day weekend. Markets are digesting a series of fresh strikes in the Middle East that have further diminished hopes that the US and Iran will resolve the six-month-old war soon. Stocks dropped to start the holiday-shortened week, with the Dow falling 600 points by mid-morning on Tuesday.

The US struck three Iranian oil tankers on Saturday. The attack was in retaliation for Iran's attacks on two US warships last week.

On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia's energy ministry said several of its energy facilities were attacked by the Iran-aligned Houthis over the weekend.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose to $98 a barrel Tuesday morning, edging closer to the critical $100-a-barrel mark, a key threshold watched closely by investors. West Texas Intermediate crude also rose 1%, trading around $93 a barrel.

Gas prices surged as a result of the latest oil spike. The average price for a gallon of gas rose to $4.15 on Monday, the first time a gallon of regular unleaded gas has ever surpassed $4 on Labor Day, according to AAA.

A prolonged conflict in the Middle East is once again on the radar as summer winds down, with investors fretting over the damage that higher oil prices could inflict on the US economy. The latest oil price surge is also coming at a critical juncture for the Federal Reserve, which is assessing the path for its future rate decisions as inflation remains elevated.

Markets are pricing in a 58% chance the Fed will hike at its September policy meeting, though the decision will hinge on next Friday's August inflation report.

Here's what smart people are saying about the oil and gas situation:

Goldman Sachs: Oil could break $120 a barrel in upside scenario

Commodity researchers at Goldman Sachs updated their oil price forecasts for the year, lifting their predictions for the price of Brent crude to $85 a barrel by December.

In Goldman's upside scenario, Brent prices could exceed an $120 a barrel in 2027, assuming that average oil output from the Gulf remains lower than expected.

"Intensified Hormuz and Red Sea shipping attacks are the most likely trigger of price upside," the bank wrote in a client note.

Goldman's bear case scenario has crude falling back to $60 a barrel in 2027, assuming that oil output from the Gulf is much higher than expected.

Bank of America: Oil prices risk $150 a barrel

Bank of America's upside scenario has oil prices rising back to near their Great Financial Crisis peak.

Strategists at the bank said they were eyeing further disruptions that could push crude to around $120 a barrel, though they believe oil could reach $150 a barrel if the war produced "vast energy infra damage" in the Middle East. BofA's base case is for Brent to average around $83 a barrel in the second half of the year.

"Our central view assumes Hormuz flows gradually normalize and a prolonged conflict is avoided. Yet, the market remains exposed to significant risks," the bank said in a client note on Monday.

Jeff Currie: "Energy crisis" will be evident in crude products

The longtime commodities analyst and Goldman Sachs alum said the lack of refining capacity and dwindling oil reserves around the world meant energy markets were in a "critical situation with "no easy fix."

Though investors are preoccupied with the price of crude oil, inflationary pressures will largely stem from the higher refined oil product prices, Currie said in a post on X Tuesday morning, pointing to crude products like gas, diesel, and jet fuel.

"That will hit the headline CPI index very soon," Currie wrote. "The energy crisis is here: it has arrived, and it's showing in the product prices, not in crude," he added.

Robin Brooks: Crude prices are unlikely to rise back to wartime peaks

The top economist and chief FX strategist at Goldman Sachs said he believed oil prices were unlikely to push back to their peak of around $120 a barrel. In a post on Substack, he laid out three reasons why:

Markets no longer believe apocalyptic forecasts. "The fact that all the apocalyptic forecasts from earlier this year were so badly wrong has made markets suspicious of any "oil prices will go up" narratives. They basically see them as snake oil at this point," Brooks said.
Markets are watching the economic toll on Iran. There appears to be "growing appreciation" for how the US blockade is hurting Iran's economy, which could push the nation to come back to the negotiating table, Brooks said. Iran is on track to see its worst economic contraction in over 30 years, according to estimates from the IMF.
Markets "learn to live with shocks and trade around them," Brooks said. He pointed to how South Korea recently pivoted to Canadian oil amid the latest supply shock, and said he expected the trend to continue with "growing intensity" around the world.

"We're not going to see my peak $125 estimate (reflecting the 80 percent rise) again. Those days are over," Brooks wrote.

Renaissance Macro: Disinflation progress will be "undone" in a few months

Gas prices are rising at a time of year when they typically decline, researchers at Renaissance Macro wrote in a post on X on Tuesday. That means the latest surge in energy prices could have a large impact on coming inflation reports.

Average retail gas prices are around $0.95 higher than they were a year ago, RenMac said.

"Whatever seasonal tailwind we saw to consumer price inflation in June and July from lower gasoline prices will be undone," the firm wrote.

James Thorne: Hiking interest rates could be a major policy mistake

If central bankers were to raise interest rates during the energy supply shock, that would mark one of the "Most Damaging" policy mistakes since the Great Financial Crisis, James Thorne, the chief market strategist at Wellington-Altus, wrote in a post on X Tuesday morning.

"The question is whether the Warsh Fed will repeat that failure: answer an energy supply shock with tighter money, squeeze households and businesses even harder, and destroy demand to prove it is serious about inflation," he wrote.

Bespoke Investment: Inflation fears could soon hit markets

Inflation fears stemming from higher energy prices could soon impact markets, though investors are shrugging off the latest price increases for now, Paul Hickey, the co-founder of Bespoke Investment Group, wrote in a note.

"Energy prices can't keep rising without impacting the market, and at some point even a tame inflation report later this week may not mean much if crude oil prices remain in the mid-90s, approaching triple digits," Hickey said.

US stocks traded relatively flat on Tuesday morning, remaining near records despite the jump in oil and gas prices. Treasury yields, which reflect interest rate expectations in the economy, remained mostly level.

A teaser has dropped for a top-secret documentary about disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes.
Critics say Nathan Fielder's film offers a never-before-seen look at the felon-founder.

Weeks before Elizabeth Holmes entered federal prison after being convicted of fraud, the Theranos founder welcomed a film crew into her home.

The first teaser for the resulting documentary, "You Can See Everything," makes it seem like a mind-bending thriller starring the fallen tech visionary.

A24 surprised critics at the Telluride Film Festival on Sunday night with a screening of the closely held project, which had been kept under wraps for three years. It hits theaters in October.

Journalists who attended the screening wrote that phones and smart glasses were bagged upon entry. The festival director asked for secrecy on plot twists and a celebrity cameo.

"What happens in Telluride stays in Telluride," she told the crowd, Los Angeles Times reporter Josh Rottenberg recalled.

Comic Nathan Fielder and filmmaker Lance Oppenheim, whose A24 feature "Primetime" is also making the festival circuit, directed the documentary. Fielder's signature blurring of real life and character acting is on full display as he presses Holmes and her partner, Billy Evans, on whether they are telling him the truth.

A one-minute teaser shows an exchange between Holmes and Fielder. Holmes insists she has nothing to hide.

"I'm not that person," she says, adding that she is engaging with him "as a human being." Fielder then asks whether she is being real.

"I'm always being real," Holmes responds, unblinking.

At 19, Holmes set out to build a diagnostics company that could run a battery of blood tests with a few drops of blood. The idea took her from Stanford dropout to the Time 100, drawing comparisons to Steve Jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars from investors, including Larry Ellison and Rupert Murdoch. Then came a Wall Street Journal inquiry that exposed serious problems with the Theranos technology, setting off the company's unraveling.

Holmes was sentenced to 11 years in prison after being found guilty on four counts that included fraud and conspiracy. Her projected release date is in 2031.

I was hesitant to turn what was meant to be a visit with a long-distance partner into a solo trip, but I'm glad I did it.

My long-distance partner and I broke up shortly before we were due to travel around the US together.
I went on the trip alone. Family, friends, and kind strangers made it a lovely, cathartic adventure.
The trip was an emotional roller coaster, culminating in a last meal with my ex to give me closure.

Back in 2022, I got into a very long-distance relationship between Paris (the French one) and Boston (the American one).

For about 18 months, we staggered along despite the thousands of miles between us.

From the start, he seemed convinced that I needed to move to America if I wanted us to have a future. Despite my doubts, I began to consider relocating. I'd fallen for Boston, I live for adventure, and if I hated it, I could just… leave?

By this point, the cracks were seriously showing, but we agreed I'd come to America for the summer, as a sort of trial run.

We never got that far.

Although we'd both questioned the future of our relationship, I was still stunned when he broke up with me a month before I was due to fly to the US.

The flights were nonrefundable, and I love a solo trip, but I couldn't decide whether going it alone this time would be cathartic or catastrophic.

I have family and friends in the US, though, and my flight was to San Diego, where one of my best friends lives, so I decided to go for it.

Deep down, I hoped that maybe this experience would be more empowering than sad.

Admittedly, the post-breakup trip had highs and lows

My plans changed a lot by the time I left.

I went from San Diego to San Francisco to Portland, enjoying several weeks with some of my favorite people, and it was the best tonic I could have hoped for.

I was probably boring company at times; I spent many hours going over the countless reasons the relationship was never meant to last. But my nearest and dearest listened to me, and laughed with me, and took me on all kinds of adventures to the most gorgeous corners of California and Oregon.

It's pretty hard to be sad when you're having that much fun with people you love.

Seeing a lot of natural beauty with people I love helped heal me.

The trickier part of the trip came toward the end, when I'd planned to spend a week in Boston. My first challenge was logistical: I now had nowhere to stay in one of America's most expensive cities, and, as usual, my travel budget was basically nonexistent.

So I put out a candid appeal on a Facebook group for female travelers, sharing about my breakup and offering to later host someone in Paris in return for them hosting me in Boston.

I got several incredibly kind responses and eventually connected with a single mom who generously let me stay with me for several nights.

In the end, I'd been able to make the best of a strange situation

I was able to make changes to my trip to make it work for me, thanks to family, friends, and a kind stranger from Facebook.

Accommodation crisis averted, I set about exploring every nook and cranny of Boston. I hung out with lovely people, saw a lot of beautiful sights, and ate incredible food — including a Boston-cream doughnut I still think about.

However, I wasn't prepared for how strange it would feel to spend day after day traipsing alone around the city I'd imagined building a life in.

My trip wasn't always easy, but it was cathartic.

I also made the mistake of going to see a ludicrously emotional Pixar movie and nearly had to walk out because I was sobbing so hard.

I only wanted the popcorn, for crying out loud. (That liquid-y "butter" on tap might be America's greatest invention.)

I'd like to say "Inside Out 2" was the peak of the emotional turbulence, but that came in the form of a dinner with my ex, right before my return to Paris.

It was pretty nerve-racking, and I hardly touched my food, but it was exactly the closure I'd dubiously hoped for.

I was still working through the blow to my ego, and the indignation of the way everything had unfolded, but sitting across the table from this man I'd shed all those tears over, it was glaringly, gloriously obvious to me that the breakup had been the best call for us both.

Ultimately, when it comes to going solo on a trip you'd planned with an ex, I would advise approaching with caution.

It wasn't always easy; emotions ran high. But it was, overall, an incredible experience — more deeply healing than I could have hoped. And yes … a pretty damn empowering one, too.

Massachusetts state police ordered to make surveillance camera locations public

Massachusetts law enforcement can't withhold information about the locations of automatic license plate reader (ALPR) technology from the public, a superior court judge has ruled.

It's the latest speed bump to a swelling nationwide surveillance network spurred by controversial Flock cameras.

The decision ends a three-year court battle between the ACLU of Massachusetts and the state police, following the civil society group's 2023 lawsuit against the state for refusing to disclose records on the locations of ALPRs and the use of the public's data by police.

At the time, the state was holding an estimated 290 million records used to track motorists and monitor vehicle activity. The judge determined that state police could not justify withholding the information from the public and ordered an immediate release of ALPR records.

"Over the past year, public outrage about secretive police surveillance has exploded across Massachusetts and the nation," said Kade Crockford, director of technology and justice programs at the ACLU of Massachusetts. "People from cities and towns across the state have been organizing to push back against local police adoption of Flock and other license plate readers. But what many residents don’t know is that the Massachusetts State Police maintains its own statewide network of license plate readers."

The explosion of ALPR surveillance systems, enabled by the integration of sophisticated AI, has prompted concern from privacy advocates and free speech organizations. Communities have pushed back against the growing presence of Flock cameras, often engaging in guerrilla tactics to expose and disable them.

A bipartisan effort to regulate companies like Flock has gained momentum ahead of the midterm elections, with prominent voices from both parties pushing for legislation to restrict their use by authorities. Last month, Missouri Senator Josh Hawley announced he was leading an investigation into Flock, as state governments crack down on data collection and block funding for the private tech company.

"In my 20-plus years at the ACLU, I’ve never really seen such a grassroots uprising against surveillance technology like this," said ACLU senior policy analyst Jay Stanley in a recent interview with the Guardian.

I live in Denmark, while my parents live across the Atlantic in Connecticut.
Most of our visits now revolve around my 3-year-old son and their role as grandparents.
Traveling without him gave me rare time to simply be my parents' daughter again.

At our first dinner on Hurtigruten's MS Trollfjord, my parents and I spent most of the meal imagining what my 3-year-old son would have thought.

Aksel would have picked at the bread, asked how many courses of "real food" were left before dessert, and probably driven his Hot Wheels through the butter.

Instead, he stayed home in Denmark with my husband while my mom, dad, and I sailed south from Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago in the High Arctic.

Outside, black mountains and sharp cliffs rose from the Arctic waters. Inside, the aquavit was so strong my mother took one sip, winced, and passed the glass to my father.

Since Aksel was born, I hadn't spent more than a few hours alone with my parents. Without his commentary and toy cars, the quiet felt unsettling.

My parents are grandparents in short bursts. They fly from Connecticut to Copenhagen, where my husband and I have lived for almost a decade, spend a few jet-lagged weeks with us, then go months without seeing Aksel except on FaceTime.

When Aksel was born, they became "Momma G" and "Poppy," and I became "Momma." When they visit, he becomes the main event.

With an ocean between us, they get little time simply to be my parents.

Traveling with my parents made me feel like their daughter again

Before we boarded the ship, we spent three days in Longyearbyen, Svalbard's largest settlement. My parents rarely visit Europe, except to see us.

Svalbard was far from their usual trip to Copenhagen, and they were in awe. On the drive from the airport, my mother leaned so close to the taxi window that her breath fogged the glass. My father kept asking how dark it gets in winter and how the grocery store gets fresh fruit.

Years of solo travel before marriage and motherhood made me efficient but jaded. Seeing Svalbard through my parents' eyes made travel feel extraordinary again.

Their reminders ("Drink water!", "Stay warm!", "Let me carry that!") instantly took me back to high school. A few years ago, I would have rolled my eyes. Now I ask Aksel if he's hungry while he's in the middle of eating.

One afternoon, my mother told me she couldn't remember the last time she had felt so relaxed on vacation.

I laughed because my mom does not relax on vacation. She anticipates everyone's needs and helps before anyone asks. When she visits Denmark, she dresses and feeds Aksel, fully embracing her role as grandmother.

For once, nobody needed anything from either of us. She could drink her coffee and watch the fjords while I sat beside her with nothing to manage. That slower pace of the sailing helped make the week restorative.

We talked about work, family, health, and how my experience of motherhood across an ocean had been both wonderful and disorienting after years of fierce independence.

We also got on each other's nerves. My parents kept asking the same questions, and I grew impatient at times.

But I had missed having enough time together to stop being on our best behavior. They knew me before I had a career, a husband, a Danish address, or anyone calling me Momma.

I realized I couldn't keep saving trips with my parents for later

I missed Aksel, but I knew the trip would have been different with him there: snacks and dropped forks at dinner, bathroom breaks, and tired legs on excursions.

My parents and I would have traveled as a mother and two grandparents.

Living in Denmark while my parents are in Connecticut makes every visit feel too short. The distance makes time more visible. Aksel changes between FaceTime calls, and each visit reminds me that my parents are aging, too.

I want Aksel to know his grandparents beyond a screen, but I also want time alone with the people who raised me. As an immigrant, I rarely feel there is enough time for both.

We talk about how quickly childhood passes, but less about how limited our time with our own parents can feel. They won't always be able to join me on adventures like this.

I didn't leave Aksel home because I needed a break from motherhood. I left him at home because my parents could still make the trip, and I couldn't assume we'd get another chance.

When I returned, Aksel wrapped his arms around me before I had taken off my coat and showed me a toy car I had seen dozens of times.

On our next family trip, he will probably be at the center of everything, and I will be glad he's there. But for one week, my parents didn't have to be Momma G and Poppy, and I didn't have to organize every day around a toddler.

Apple's iPads are popular tablets, and the brand sells several different models. But while there are plenty of iPads to choose from, figuring out which ones are actually the newest isn't straightforward. Unlike the brand's iPhone lineup, iPads don't follow a simple numbering system, so model names alone don't tell you how new an iPad is. And that can be confusing since some stores may still carry older models. That's where this guide comes in. We'll walk you through the newest iPads, show you how to identify them, and explain what each one offers.

Right now, the newest iPads are the M4-powered iPad Air models, which were released in March 2026. Apple's current lineup also includes the M5-powered iPad Pro, the standard iPad with an A16 chip, and the iPad Mini with an A17 Pro chip. Apple refreshed its iPad Air lineup in March 2026 with new 11-inch and 13-inch models.

This latest generation makes the jump from the brand's M3 chip to its newer M4, which Apple says delivers up to a 30% performance boost. Along with faster overall speeds, the upgraded chip should make a noticeable difference in gaming and creative work, while faster memory bandwidth is designed to better handle AI-driven tasks.

The new iPad Air offers the same connectivity upgrades as the latest iPad Pro. That includes Apple's C1X modem for quicker cellular performance and the N1 wireless chip, which adds support for WiFi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread.

Beyond their new chip and connectivity options, the M4-powered iPad Airs carry over the same core design and feature set as their predecessors. They still have a Liquid Retina LED display, Touch ID support, a 12MP front camera, and a 12MP rear camera. Both sizes support the Apple Pencil (USB-C) and the newer Apple Pencil Pro, which adds features such as a squeeze sensor and a gyroscope. Storage options range from 128GB to 1TB.

Though the 2026 iPad Air originally launched at the same price as the previous generation, Apple has since increased its prices. The 11-inch model now starts at $749, up from $599, and the 13-inch starts at $949, up from $799.

The 2026 11-inch iPad Air model numbers are A3459 for the WiFi-only edition and A3460 for the WiFi + Cellular option. Meanwhile, the model numbers for the latest 13-inch iPad Air are A3461 for the WiFi edition and A3462 for the WiFi + Cellular model.

The newest iPad Pro models

Apple's latest high-end iPad Pro arrived in October 2025. Both the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models received a major under-the-hood upgrade. Instead of the M4 chip found in the 2024 models, these new Pros run on Apple's M5 processor.

The M5 is the most powerful chip ever used in an iPad, built to deliver noticeable gains in AI and 3D performance over the M4. That makes these tablets a better match for power users who run demanding apps, advanced AI workflows, or high-end games. Apple has also improved memory bandwidth and storage, which should help with smoother multitasking and faster read and write performance.

There are a few notable connectivity upgrades, too. The 2025 iPad Pro models with cellular use Apple's C1X modem, which the company says can deliver up to a 50% boost in data performance compared to the M4 versions. Apple has also added its new N1 wireless chip, which supports WiFi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread.

On the outside, Apple didn't mess with a good thing. The new iPad Pros keep the ultra-thin design of their predecessors, measuring just 5.3mm for the 11-inch model and 5.1mm for the 13-inch model. Each model also sticks with Apple's Tandem OLED display, introduced on the previous-gen iPad Pros, which offers better contrast and sharper clarity than standard LED screens.

The 2025 iPads are also compatible with Apple's Magic Keyboard, Apple Pencil (USB-C), Apple Pencil Pro, and Smart Folio. Pricing was initially the same as the last generation, but Apple has since increased prices. The new 11-inch iPad Pro now starts at $1,199, and the 13-inch iPad Pro starts at $1,499.

The latest 11-inch iPad Pro model numbers are A3357 for the standard WiFi model and A3358 for the WiFi + Cellular model. The model numbers for the 13-inch iPad Pros are A3360 for the standard WiFi model and A3361 for the WiFi + Cellular model.

The newest standard iPad

Apple released its newest standard iPad, the 11th-generation iPad, featuring an A16 chipset and an 11-inch screen, in March 2025.

The new entry-level iPad is solely an internal upgrade from its predecessor, the 10th-generation iPad from 2022. Apple says the new tablet's A16 chip is nearly 30% faster than the previous model's A14 Bionic processor. However, the A16 processor is almost three years old, and that does lead to some limitations. Most notably, the 2025 iPad is the sole tablet in Apple's current lineup that's incompatible with Apple Intelligence.

The new standard iPad's A16 chip offers a solid performance boost over its 2022 predecessor.

The only other upgrade from the 10th-generation iPad is an increase in the base storage from 64GB to 128GB. The company also added a 512GB storage tier, new to the standard iPad. The 11th-generation iPad retains the same design and features as its predecessor, including Touch ID, USB-C, a landscape-oriented 12MP front camera, a 12MP wide rear camera, and support for the Apple Pencil (USB-C) and first-generation Apple Pencil.

The standard iPad initially cost $349 at launch, but in June 2026, Apple increased the starting price to $449. The 11th-generation iPad's model numbers are A3354 for the standard WiFi model and A3355 for the WiFi + Cellular version.

Apple released its latest iPad Mini, the seventh-generation iPad Mini (A17 Pro), in October 2024.

Starting at $599, the seventh-generation iPad Mini is a midrange option between the standard iPad and the latest premium iPad Pro and Air models. It's a great pick if you want an iPad that balances portability and performance.

The latest iPad Mini continues Apple's modern tablet design with narrow borders and flat edges. It features the same 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display as its predecessor, the sixth-generation iPad Mini from 2021.

The seventh-generation iPad Mini is powered by the A17 Pro processor, introduced in the iPhone 15 Pro models, making it the least expensive iPad model that can run Apple Intelligence. The capable processor also runs apps and games quickly and smoothly, whether basic or intensive.

Upgrades from the previous sixth-generation iPad Mini include support for Apple Pencil Pro, though the new tablet has lost its predecessor's support for the second-generation Apple Pencil. The seventh-generation iPad Mini also supports the Apple Pencil (USB-C). Base storage has also been upgraded from 64GB in the previous generation to 128GB, and it is now available in 256GB and 512GB options.

The seventh-generation iPad Mini's model numbers are A2993 for the standard WiFi model and A2995 for the WiFi + Cellular model.

Will there be new iPads in 2026?

Apple released new iPad Air models in March 2026. Although not confirmed, rumors suggest that other new iPads are also in the works for later this year.

Most notably, the 2024 iPad Mini is due for an upgrade as it's the oldest model in Apple's current lineup. According to a Bloomberg report, the next iPad Mini is expected to feature an OLED screen and a more water-resistant design.

Do iPads get good deals?

Apple almost never discounts iPads on its own website or in its retail stores, but that doesn't mean deals are hard to find. And during big shopping events like Prime Day or Black Friday, discounts can jump to $150 on select models.

How to figure out which iPad you own

All of Apple's latest iPads share a similar design, making it tricky to tell them apart at a glance. Fortunately, every iPad has a model number that reveals exactly which version and generation it belongs to.

As noted in bold at the end of each section above, an iPad's model number is a short code that begins with a letter and is followed by four digits. For example, "A2995" identifies the WiFi + Cellular version of the seventh-generation iPad Mini.

If you're not sure which iPad you have, you can check by opening the Settings app and navigating to General > About. In the top section, you'll see either the model number (e.g., A2995) or a part number formatted with letters, numbers, and a slash (like XXXXXXX/A). If you see the latter, tap it to reveal the true model number.

Released in August 2025, Pips puts a unique spin on dominoes, creating a fun single-player experience that could become your next daily gaming habit.

Currently, if you're stuck, the game only offers to reveal the entire puzzle, forcing you to move on to the next difficulty level and start over. However, we have you covered! Below are piecemeal answers that will serve as hints so that you can find your way through each difficulty level.

How to play Pips

If you've ever played dominoes, you'll have a passing familiarity with how Pips is played. As we've shared in our previous hints stories for Pips, the tiles, like dominoes, are placed vertically or horizontally and connect with each other. The main difference between a traditional game of dominoes and Pips is the color-coded conditions you have to address. The touching tiles don't necessarily have to match.

The conditions you have to meet are specific to the color-coded spaces. For example, if it provides a single number, every side of a tile in that space must add up to the number provided. It is possible — and common — for only half a tile to be within a color-coded space.

Here are common examples you'll run into across the difficulty levels:

Number: All the pips in this space must add up to the number.
Equal: Every domino half in this space must be the same number of pips.
Not Equal: Every domino half in this space must have a completely different number of pips.
Less than: Every domino half in this space must add up to less than the number.
Greater than: Every domino half in this space must add up to more than the number.

If an area does not have any color coding, it means there are no conditions on the portions of dominoes within those spaces.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Carla Bacon, 69, who is caring for her 70-year-old husband while working a full-time job in Oklahoma. Bacon's husband has slowly been recovering from a stroke, and they've had to go into medical debt to make ends meet. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

I worked for much of my career as a public health director, and I was working on my doctorate until the pandemic hit.

I am also a stroke survivor. Four and a half years ago, I experienced a pontine hemorrhage while at work. Thankfully, the hospital was located across the street, and I was in the ER within 15 minutes. My recovery took several months, and I'm still improving. Our situation is that we have one stroke survivor caring for another.

My husband wanted to be home

My husband and I always had separate homes, but we would travel back and forth and stay with each other. I owned a home in Colorado Springs, where I recovered, but I moved back to Oklahoma. He was working on well water projects in Durango, Colorado.

My husband is 70, and he experienced a severe stroke two and a half years ago while staying at his cabin in Durango. He was life-flighted to a hospital with dim prospects of survival. I drove 14 hours nonstop to get to him in a mobility van.

We sold his cabin to pay for medical expenses, and I brought him home to live with me in Oklahoma.

He was initially in a skilled nursing facility in Enid when I brought him here, but the cost became too much after 21 days, and he hated it there. He just wanted to be home. He received therapy, which was absolutely great, but it wasn't covered by insurance at all.

While he was there, I bought him an appropriate bed and whatever equipment we needed to care for him. He's lived with me since June 2024.

We found an outpatient therapy facility a mile from our house, and insurance approved it. It's helped him strengthen his upper body. He has pusher syndrome, where his body moves over to the one side that is weak, and he's been going twice a week with a copay of a couple of hundred dollars a month.

I care for him on evenings and weekends

He's bedbound and requires CNA care daily. The minute he could get an Advantage plan in 2025, we started with home health services. I care for him in the evenings and on weekends. Therapists for home health repeatedly marked him as not making progress, and many appeals got me nowhere.

I went back to work to help pay for much of what we both need to sustain us and to make sure our debts and credit cards are completely paid off. I had found work for the National Guard in Oklahoma City, but I lost my job during the DOGE cuts. I worked as an online tutor for students. I was out of work for a while, but I recently got hired again and am working in an office doing finance tasks.

Monday through Friday, I wake up at 5 a.m. I usually have a long list of things to take care of. I have to make sure the dogs are fed. I water the plants outside. I fix myself breakfast, shower, get dressed, and do other mini chores until 7. My husband sleeps in a separate part of the house because he has a special bed, so I wake him up and get his pills out for him. I change him, take his blood pressure, and help him go to the bathroom.

I'm at work by 8, come home at 4:30 p.m., and then check up on him. I'm able to take two hours off during the day to accompany him to therapy, and I put in the extra hours before or after work. Then starts the rest of the night, preparing dinner, cleaning up, and getting him ready for bed. I try to sleep by 9, and I keep my phone near me because he sometimes calls me in the middle of the night if he needs me.

I do it all as the full-time caregiver on Saturdays and Sundays. That's when I do bike therapy with him. There is never a break in my schedule. There's a lot I can't do, such as lift him.

His Social Security doesn't cover his supplies

We pay about $5,000 a month for a CNA, Monday through Friday. Medical supplies include diapers and a diaper pail with liners, which are changed daily; wipes; gloves; bedsore pads; creams, such as bedsore cream; hydrocortisone to help with itching; and Tea Tree soap to wash his back. Those supplies run about $500 a month. His Social Security doesn't cover it.

He has a wheelchair that took over 250 days for his Medicare plan to reimburse him for, a mobility van, a Hoyer lift, a therapy bike, a special shower and bathroom chair, hand weights, and various therapy items to help with his hand and foot mobility. Because he's bedbound, he also has subscriptions to a dozen streaming services for his daily entertainment.

He is making progress, but it's just taking longer than "normal" post-stroke survivors. He can stand up from his wheelchair, and we're hoping that in six months, he can use a walker. I'm optimistic, though he, from day one, has said I should have just let him die. He does have an inkling of hope, and it's slowly coming out, despite years of fighting our insurance and caregivers who didn't see that he's worth the time. I'm hoping we won't need a CNA by the end of the year.

It's not cheap, and Medicare just doesn't cut the mustard. Neither do any of the Medicare Advantage plans. Denial is the norm. I'm lucky that I had studied healthcare systems and had the knowledge to actually fight those denials. I can't even imagine what the average person goes through.

I keep reminding myself that I'm 69. What's life going to look like over the next five years? My three children have been very supportive. They've made a pact to come and help me at least once every three months with some of the tasks I can't handle, like mowing the lawn or trimming trees. My stroke has left me rather weak, and I can't haul heavy stuff.

I operate on a hope and a prayer. If I make it to the five-year mark since my stroke in December, I'm going to count myself incredibly lucky. I'm looking forward to life and have the drive and willingness to keep pushing.
