Many artists, family and friends of Colectivo TAN 473 gathered in a bright pink room located about a little tienda with an envious view of Guanajuato, Mexico. The oversized windows were open to let in the strong breeze that comes along with the head of the late afternoon sun. The vibrant balloons bouncing in teh wind set the perfect tone for the exhibition of the artwork done in teh recent workshop. Each of the young artists presented their piece and told about their positive experience in the workshop.

Another workshop was also announced which will begin September 10 and last until the end of November. The workshop participants will learn different techniques including photography and painting, then will help create a community-involved mural along the main street of the neighborhood.

Muchos artistas, familia y amigos del Colectivo TAN 473 se reunieron en la brillante sala rosada arriba de una tienda que tiene una vista envidiosa de la ciudad de Guanajuato, México. Las enormes ventanas estaban abiertas para dejar pasar la brisa fuerte que siempre acompaña al calor del sol de la tarde. Los globos de colores que brincaban en el viento alegraban al ambiente de la exposición del arte hecho en el recién cumplido taller para niños. Cada uno de los participantes mostraba su obra y hablaba de su experiencia positiva en el taller.

También fue anunciado otro taller que comienza el 10 de septiembre y durará hasta el final de noviembre. Los participantes del taller van a aprender varias técnicas como pintura y fotografía Ayudaran a creer un mural comunitario en el callejón principal.

The Year of Transformation: Move

Self-confidence and self-love. Two important feelings that I hope to share with the girls at the Buen Pastor orphanage in Guanajuato while working with Colectivo TAN 473. One of the ways that I would like to do this is through movement.

I grew up dancing... everywhere! I couldn't keep myself from tap dancing in the kitchen, pirouetting on the soccer field and twirling across the stage. And though my experience as a ballerina ended at age 20, I continue to dance today- only not in a tutu. I still crave the feeling of the music and my body combining to express the emotions that I feel but am unable to put into words. I hope to share that excitement with the children in Guanajuato just as my parents gave me that opportunity.

During the 2013 Fall semester, I would like to offer dance and movement classes to the children as part of El Año de Transformar. Not only does dance allow a healthy way to release energy or tension that is felt, it gives confidence and a sense of ownership of one's body.

I would like to combine ballet technique, to strengthen the body, with improvisation that will encourage the girls to move in creative and non-limiting ways. For example, as the music begins, we will all pretend to be algae at the bottom of the ocean. Swaying with the soft current and then, as the music becomes faster, we become jelly fish, then turn into a manta ray, we will change into the waves crashing on the beach and end as a the bubbles swirling back into the great blue sea.

My plan is, for the month of November, to work on a performance inspired by the classic The Nutcracker. Local musicians will do a rendition of the beautiful music to which we will choreograph new dances. At the beginning of the holiday season I would like to organize performances in a few plazas in Guanajuato's historic town center to share our excitement and love with the community.

El Año de Transformar: Mover

Confianza en si mismo y amor propio. Dos sentimientos importantes que espero compartir con las nenas del internado del Buen Pastor en Guanajuato mientras trabajando con Colectivo TAN 473. El movimiento es una de las maneras en que espero lograr eso.

Cuando era pequeña bailaba y bailaba... por todas partes! No me podía parar de bailar en la cocina, dando vueltas en el campo de futbol y brincando por el escenario. Y aunque mi experiencia como bailarina se acabó cuando tenía 20 años, sigo bailando hoy... pero sin tutu. Las ganas no se me quitan de poner la musica y fundir mi cuerpo con el sonido para mostrar la emoción que siento pero no puedo expresar en palabras. Espero compartir mi amor del baile con los jovenes de Guanajuato como mis padres a mi me lo compartieron.

Durante el primer cuatrimestre, quiero ofrecer clases de danza y movimiento como parte del Año de Transformar. Les provee una manera saludable de soltar energia o quitarse de la tensión tanto como les da confianza y un sentido de propeidad de su cuerpo.

Me gustaria combinar parte de la técnica de ballet clasico con improvisación para animar a los participantes moverse en maneras creativas y sin limites. Quiero, en el mes de noviembre, crear un performance inspirado por El Cascanueces. Musicos de Guanajuato van a crear una interpretación de la musica y vamos a hacer nueva coreografía. Al principio de las posadas la idea es hacer los performance en algunas de las plazas del centro histórico de Guanjauato para compartir nuestra emoción y amor con la comunidad.

El Año de Transformar: Crecer.

The Year of Transformation: Grow.

As part of my year with Colectivo TAN 473 I would like to plant a garden at the Buen Pastor for the girls to tend. The garden would be primarily edible fruits, vegetables and herbs and they would have the opportunity to see the entire life cycle of the plants and then, as the plants ripen, we will come up with meals using the food harvested from the garden.

Working in the garden will not only provide the girls with responsibility but a sense of fulfillment in seeing the literal fruits of their labor. I look forward to using the garden as inspiration for different creative projects.

For example, the girls will make sketches and observations in their Cuadernos that will, at the end of the year, allow them to look back and see how the plants progressed from seed to stem, then leaves, flower and finally fruit.

The beauty of what nature provides for us and the necessity of its bounty are often overlooked as fast food and supermarkets offering pre-made, packaged meals become prevalent in our societies. I hope to engage the girls in their relationship with the Earth and inspire them to be aware of how well they maintain their planet as well as their bodies.

Lots of exciting things happening in the realm of the radar...

I have some new pieces up at The Loft!
I will be out of touch for the month of April so be sure to get your orders in soon.

Also, I recently launched Celia Rose's Guanajuato Transformation. I am trying to raise money for me to return to Guanajuato and focus all of my attention on creating art projects with the girls at the Buen Pastor orphanage and other youth in the city.

While living in Mexico, I was fortunate enough to meet Katie Clancy, creator of Colectivo TAN 473 (en español) who introduced me to an entirely new realm of Guanajuato. The city, with its mummies, mines and legends, has been a never ending source of excitement and inspiration for me since I first arrived in 2005.

Studying- and then living- in Guanajuato completely changed my view of the world and transformed my sense of self completely. Never before had I felt so confident in my abilities and supported as myself. I felt wonder and excitement at the possibilities that became open to me with my newfound confidence and community.

My desire to create has always been inside of me and I was lucky enough to grow up in a family that encouraged and facilitated art in everyday life. I feel, though, that my time in Guanajuato has been key in my taking an idea from my dreams and making them visible for all to see.

I want to provide a safe environment and give nurturing support for children who may not find those things at home or in their everyday lives. The changes that happen in their self-confidence are as important as the drawing and photography skills that we incorporate into our workshops.

Tokens of Amor

The Skillery's Nasvhille Creativity Summit was two full days full of creative collaboration and focusing on ways to grow as an individual while giving back to the city which is endless in its inspiration.

I have been out of the bubble of academia for a while so the feel of the weekend was laced with nostalgia for the days that were crisp with the energy of exchanging knowledge. The workshop on Saturday the 9th was more reminiscent of a lecture-based course with speakers, power point presentations and only a couple of breaks to go out and soak up the returning sunshine that has been away during the winter months. We were well caffeinated by Beve Mobile Coffee and I finally got to sample the goods of Bang Candy Company for lunch. I was impressed by and encouraged by the strong voice that women had among the guest speakers. The panel discussion with Liza Graves, Kate Mills and Kaelah Bee was just what I needed to top off all of the preparations I had done for the Valentine-making workshop the next day.

I have to say, before anything else, that I would not have pulled off the class if it hadn't been for my roommate. She let me load her car down and offered to spend her morning off to help me out by arranging, rearranging, unpacking and sorting, tasting and moving everything around the shop all while I steadily babbled my thoughts out loud and worked myself into an excited mess.

For me, the preparations that go into teaching a class are similar to those that go into creating a painting. Planning the activities, looking at the workspace, gathering supplies and then making the projects before hand are for my pre-class routine what the laying out the brushes and solvents, scraping the palette and stretching the canvas are for my process of painting. I want the participants in the class to feel that they have the freedom to stand or sit and move around while working. Having options at your fingertips and the opportunity to use different materials on a whim allows the dream to become tangible. I hope to provide a comfortable environment that enables the imagination during my classes.

It was a joy seeing how the scraps of paper and pieces of ribbon were used transform the maps and magazines into Tokens of Amor that will be shared with loved ones this coming Thursday. It was a wonderful day of loving love as my friend, Janelle of Panama Red Arts, says.

The colorful holiday of Los Días de los Muertos, The Days of the Dead, is celebrated in Mexico to honor those family members or loved ones who have died. These two days, November 1 and 2, are also the Catholic holidays of All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Altars are created in homes and feature portraits, favorite foods and personal items such as reading glasses and hats. The cemeteries are filled with family members gathered together lighting candles and adorning the tombs with Marigolds and Cockscombs. In the streets there are often parades and fairs, music and dancing. During many of the traditional performances the dancers wear masks that represent old men, death, animals and other characters to better tell their story. The dances are comprised of steps passed down over the years along with other traditions such as making sugar skulls and hanging decorations like banners of papel picado, cut paper, to make the fiesta more colorful and bright. Los Días de los Muertos are vibrant and lively days focused on the precious memories rather than the fear and gore focused Halloween holiday that we in the US typically celebrate.

Celia Rose recently relocated to Nashville from Guanajuato, Mexico. Unlike the mountainous desert town where she had been living for the past three years, there are few opportunities to enjoy the outdoors in Tennessee without either the mosquitoes, the humidity or the bitter chill driving you back inside. Not wanting to miss the chance to spend a night under the stars, Celia Rose organized an evening of art and music to celebrate Los Muertos at Mas Tacos Por Favor, a taco shop in East Nashville known for their tasty tacos and delicious soups, for Los Muertos.

Paper mâché and horchata were among the supplies scattered across the tables Thursday night while the first round of mask-making got under way. Among the many artists were a mother and son team, and one boyfriend who surprised his girlfriend on her spooky birthday. Friday night, the taco truck was posted up outside of the East Nashville location of Mas Tacos and kept cranking out pork and vegetarian tamales while local bands New Pleasure and Promised Land entertained the ever-growing crowd that was gathered outside.

Among the confetti and paint, and behind the masks, there was a beautiful combination of cultures and traditions. The left over jack-o-lanterns smiled on the table next to the sugar skulls as the last of the spirits slipped away into the night. No matter the tradition or the language, the turning of the seasons seems to spark that sense of nostalgia in all of us.

Today Maverick Radar is visiting East Park Community Center to spend some time learning about La Lotería, a traditional Mexican board game similar to BINGO.
While playing the game, we will look at the drawings and talk about the words in Spanish.

Each person will be able to design their own cards and game boards for a personalized version of La Lotería.

The finished paintings will be displayed in the lobby of the EPCC. Two participants will be invited to take the Maverick Mask-Making workshop at Mas Tacos Por Favor on the Friday of Los días de los Muertos. More information about the masks can be found at The Skillery.
