I've had a lot of posts popping up in my FaceBook memories from this blog I started way back when. It was intended to encourage myself to make time to paint every day. Now, it would be a nice visual diary of my work, methods, and progress. Its always nice to see how far you've come with your work. That's what seeing some of these older paintings has done for me. You don't realize how far you've come until you look back.
Reference photos: I tend to horde reference photos for rainy days. Some of which are bad quality, others way beyond my capability to recreate. After years of doing this I’ve learned that eventually I’ll work out an approach in my head, tackle it, and have a work I’m pleased with. The photo for this was very grainy and the bluff seemed overwhelming. I started the painting with an olive green background which helped me tremendously in creating the shadows for the light filtering down. This photo is of my son and his new husky mix puppy on one of their first outings to Red Bluff in Ms. It's one of his favorite place, in the region, to hike. It was taken by his girlfriend with a camera phone so it was kind of grainy. At first, it was an obstacle because I wasn't sure how to approach this photo not being able to see details. The blessing in that is that it forced me to stay loose and not focus on the details, but instead, the light.

Red String of Fate

I read about a Japanese tale and was inspired to do an abstract.The red string of fate, also referred to as the Red Thread of Destiny. It is an East Asian belief originating from Chinese legend and is also used in Japanese legend. According to this myth, the gods tie an invisible red string around the ankles of those that are destined to be soul mates and will one day marry each other. Often, in Japanese culture, it is thought to be tied around the little finger.

Every since I was a girl, I have always loved Monet's work. I was in my 20's when I first got to lay eyes on some of his paintings. I was frozen in place, in disbelief, because they were so much more colorful than they were in the books. All those subtle seemingly greyed down paintings had peaches, pinks, and lavenders in them.
I painted his waterlillies for myself and made it my own. I made the colors a little more vivid because of the dark room it was going to be put in.
I really do want to try one of his more subtle landscapes. We'll see.

These three paintings are going to be auctioned off to help raise money for a lot of deserving kids in the Petal Band.
The Petal Indoor Percussion Theatre is gearing up. They placed 15th in a World Competition last year and would appreciate donations. It doesn't have to be a lot, but every little bit counts so that they can travel to these competitions. They can be made at this site ~

It's a new year and a new chance to do things better this year. I'm very happy with how much I have grown, as an artist, and I have so many wonderful friends to thank for that. They all teach me something differently, push me further than I would go myself, and help me make mistakes into masterpieces. These friends, and family, with their kind thoughts, encouragement, and most importantly their prayers got me through a tough year. I've had to deal with severe hypothyroidism, thyroid cancer, surgery, and radiation. I've had a 6 mo check up in December, and things are looking great so far! I feel better than I have in years!

This picture is from the SMAA December Show. It's called "Haitian Market", Oil 12x12". This painting won best in show.

Back from attending the Mississippi Art Colony

I've just returned from the MS Art Colony, with seven works. It's always a wonderful experience to work around other artists (very talented artists) and get their suggestions, trade secrets, and wisdom. I was also voted in as a board member. I don't know if I should be proud or scared. In any case, it's always a unique and wonderful experience, as well as a privilege, to work with creative people.

These first two florals were done in Acrylic. I wanted them to be strong, in color, and loose in the paint strokes. It's an ok attempt for me because it really isn't all that loose.

This painting was from a photo my husband took when he was in Haiti, after the earthquake. I had done a smaller one in my art journal. Everyone like that so much that I thought I'd put it onto canvas and add the second woman and child that were left out in my art journal.

Paintings based on New Orleans

I've been given the opportunity to have a show in Meridian, Ms with paintings based on New Orleans. These two are ones that I have finished in the past week. I am trying to get away from my norm and be a little looser. It's always more interesting, for the viewer, to put the painting together with their own eyes.

My intention for starting this blog was to motivate myself and a girlfriend to pick up a paint brush daily. As with everything else, life got in the way. I may not paint daily but I still manage to find the time several times a week. Instead of finishing a painting daily I will only be posting when I've completed paintings, or for art related events.
This painting is one that I did during a Patt Odom workshop. I love all the colors and the movement of brushstrokes within it. Patt has been wonderful for helping me create looser paintings (and letting me know exactly what I am doing wrong} and I am grateful for that. I've learned so many things from so many amazing artists that are in my life and I am so very grateful for the friendships of each and every one of them.

I've let this blog go for way too long. I stopped doing the daily painting due to life being in the way and bigger projects. I plan to add recent paintings back to this blog very soon.
I had thyroid cancer this spring and have recovered from that and I'm ready to get back to painting again. It feels so good to feel back to normal again! I still have treatment to undergo but all is definitely well.

This painting was from two photo's that I took while I was in Huntsville, Alabama. The clouds were incredible that week. When the sun was setting the clouds reflected that golden light everwhere.

Today's painting was taken from a photo by Jeanna Jinks, while she was in India. From time to time we share pictures to paint to keep the creativity flowing. She's painted the same one and it came out beautifully. Her paintings always have strong color which makes them eye candy for anyone that loves color.

After the eye surgery, sinus infection, another sinus infection, and helping my mother in law during her recovery from double knee replacement, I am back to painting on a regular basis. As I said before, this did start out as a daily painting blog; producing paintings daily. Starting out like that has helped me to develop a routine that has morphed into a painting daily and producing a painting or two a week.
Luckily when I am running out of steam I have plenty of artist friends that fuel my inspiration. The next painting that I will be doing will be from another artist, Jeanna Jinks, trip to India. We both are painting the same image in our own way. I'll post it in a couple of days when I am through with it.

The painting posted here is from a pic I took at the Hattiesburg, MS zoo. These two parrots always seem to be squabbling at each other.

Eye Surgery

I had eye surgery after coming home from the Mississippi Art Colony. I'll get back to painting when I am recovered from that. I will be posting some pics of paintings I did at Colony, soon, and I am planning more since I can't paint at the moment.

I'll probably only be posting a couple of times during the week, when I do have something done. It's not going to be every day. I haven't felt too well and my creativity is taking a hit. I spent today doing a little 5x7 sketch. It's nice to do those when your not sure of the subject and you don't want to waste a big canvas. I'm glad I did it because it turns out that I hated it. Another one of those "it looked great in my head" paintings.
