Panibagong Adjustment

Change is constant, so they say.

A new Assistant Regional Director has come our way after that Ma'am Fhat has become full-fledged, it is but natural and common in the organization that they get transferred to different regions.

And for me, that is a sign of a new adjustment.

I don't know him personally but people say he was mabait. He is. Silent but cheerful.

I do not know what to do of his character, I cannot read him yet, but I hope he will carry us through a different kind of management, one with integrity and honesty and one that serves the people more than that who serves the politician.

It's quite a busy state here in the office, and I am going nuts about things, but I pray that things will be better soon, and that my health does not fail me. So help me God.

I don't!

When I was younger, times have been really hard for our family. There were times when even our breakfast had to be "utang" from the nearest neighbor's store. It was tough times when my Mom and Dad had to do so much just to tide things over.

And seeing my Mom get in so much financial troubles have been a letdown for me and my siblings. It was disappointing, and very bothersome to our mental health. We have also experienced going to school with very limited allowance for snacks, and wait, I had to walk from school to our house because I lack money for fare! That was how terrible life was back then.

And Mom getting harassed because she cannot pay for her loans, that was so sad.

So no, I imagined a life well-lived, completely different from what my parents have experienced. I never borrowed despite the hard circumstances I was bombarded with. And I used my wits and writing skills to earn money and LIVE.

So NO! I don't remember loaning money because I need to. Although, I remember friends lending money from me. Teehee.

And just so you know, ayokong masira ang pagkakaibigan natin o ang relasyon natin kaya, as much as practicable, I do not want to lend someone money too. Mahirap maningil, and that money you are lending someone, pinaghirapan natin yan.

I may sound greedy, or un-cheerful here, but that's just reality. Mahirap maningil, may nasisirang mga relasyon dahil dito.

I Survived January

Ahhh February! My birth month, my favorite month of the year!

I am welcoming this new month as if this was a fresh year. Like January has been a long while ago, with so much stuff happening, so many new tasks I couldn't even learn yet, but I do anyway. It was like January has been too long a month. Overwhelming! Three major events, and 1 horrible cry.

I am once again, moved to a different cocoon. I only stayed for 9 quarters in my DOLE Gensan Family and after 2024, I started with the Technical Support Services Division (TSSD) due to the retirement of its former boss.

I used to believe that TSSD holds the most engaging positions as it is quite known to be the think tank of the regional operations. I stand corrected. While it is true, it remains as the think tank of the DOLE operations, in my first month, I could say it is the most tiresome office where your brain cells forever function even when you are asleep.

I may be saying this just now because it is my first month in the office and I have not yet mastered everything else, let alone learn the ropes. But everything seemed to be urgent, important, and I have not slept really well until I had a dose of sleeping vits. That busy huh, it is!

And everything seemed to be technical! I have never read so much in my years in the field, but this new task requires you to think, read, write, brainstorm, decide and report to so many people! Not that I am complaining, but I really have yet to learn and yet so much has happened already without me being taught on how to do stuff.

Do I congratulate myself? YES! And a pat on the back.

I guess there's nothing else to do but swim!

Thank you to those people who believed that I could do it, I am doing my best.

And look, there's a word they coined for how I felt in January! 😆

It's just February, I can still feel my lungs breathing.

Until My Last String Snaps

As a leader, you are expected to be on top of every situation, no matter how minor it is and even more so when it is huge.

December is a month of breaking barriers, utilization of funds to zero and making sure that every target is hit bull's eye.

And yet, there are personnel who, no matter how long they have been doing the job, can't seem to give focus to the requirement.

I cannot simply ignore the fact that a direct report has been repeatedly giving me headaches, here and there since the start of my stint. If that was deliberate, I do not know, but in my mind, that was a low class act of incompetence and inability to cope to change and to pressure.

I am a person who wants things done in a snap. I do not delegate much. In as much as I can do it, I will do it, and do not leave things be in the hands of my staff who are not technically equipped to do such tasks.

This December has been tough! But what can be tougher than a subordinate who doesn't do justice to the call for urgent matters.

I can be kind, at least I wanted to be kind. And each time I say this, it is a personal struggle. I need to have patience to be able to stay kind.

And I can only be kind until my last string snaps.

Of Earthquakes and Passing an Exam!

On November 17 at about 4:14, I was just lying on the bed reading Kevin Kwan's The Crazy Rich Girlfriend on my phone when there came a sudden jolt, and what was a simple shake turned into a crazy frenzy of tremors up until its first minute.

My first instinct was to go out even if I wasn't really clothed properly since I just arrived from a meeting and just wanted to lie down and take a good rest. But I couldn't get myself out of the house since the shaking has disturbed my peace of mind.

I was trying to open the latch of the door to let myself out but I struggled with it. And for a while, I thought it would be the end of the world.

While we in Mindanao have been experiencing normal shakes here and there, this was quite a different experience; it was the longest one minute of my life, and it was by far the strongest one I have experienced.

If you follow me on Facebook, I have posted a similar experience while we were in Baguio City. It was a M7.2, Intensity 4 kind of earthquake. This time, it was a M6.8 but with an intense shaking of Intensity 6. The epicenter was in Glan, Sarangani Province, a municipality under my care in DOLE.

The first thing I did was call the hubby, and then the daughter, and then my immediate family, the Mother-in-Law and then my staff. I could never recall how many times I attempted to call my daughter or the hubby yet, my fingers were shaking I couldn't push the dial button. It seemed as if at that very moment, all hell broke loose.

The damage wasn't too bad though, we only had a broken picture frame and a few ceramics that lost their arms, two broken salt and pepper shakers, and books that toppled over.

That very time, power was already gone. So we were careful not to move much in the house because it was so dark and of all the things I never got to buy, candles. No candles in the house!

By 8PM, I got a message from a friend that I passed the CES-WE! I passed one of the most difficult exams I had to take! It was never a joke! It was a heavy exam, that in my heart, I was settled in the reality of taking the exam again.

So I PM'ed Ric and told him I passed.

I cried while thanking God profusely for saving us from harm and not denying us of protection, and even more because of the good news!

But you see, when all these things come in unison, you don't know how to feel. The alarming effect we saw after the quake was terrifying. And if you tell me what could be worse than this, it's the fact that anytime, life may change for you or your family because of circumstances like calamities and deaths.

We all are passing this life but once, let's choose to be kind to one another!

Aba! Day 1 - Reminiscing the School Year That Was

I have not been much of a reader nor a writer in the past few years. Read, yes. But I would confess, it's not as always as it seemed to be. I hated the fact that I can no longer read a full book in one sitting. My latest book is A Man Called Ove, and I have not even finished t yet.

I have a friend who always gives me e-books, I ask him for e-books and yet, I just have them ready in my collection. Even the real, tangible books I have are quite ignored for some time now.

For some reason, I have become lazy. I have become the person I didn't want to be, maybe because of the busy schedule at work, or have I been too complacent with a lot of stuff?

Just this morning, as I have always planned it to be, I finally got the urge to get my Bob Ong box of cards. This Bob Ong's Aba! are a set of cards with questions or tasks that you can answer or that you can follow. I vow to at least answer one card every week, or the most often that I can do it because I need to sharpen my brain cells lest they rust completely.

So, for the first question:

This question isn't so hard because it would definitely be first year college.

I was so keen in going to college because it seemed to me, a certain kind of paradise. To be away from your parents, to not be answering to them when they tell you to do something, to not be able to hear their voice once in a while because you are 2 hours away from each other. Of course, that time in college, the only means of communication ready enought for the families to have are landlines, which by the way would be long distance considering General Santos is far from Koronadal.

First year in college meant seeing and knowing new friends, and enjoying a life in the city. It meant cooking my own meals and budgeting my own money. It meant having time to enjoy with friends without the parents' eyes piercing through me. It also meant having to fall in love.

First year in college meant FREEDOM for me. And I guess, the freedom I got, I chose to use well because eventually, first year meant the second, and the third, and the fourth.

My college days were well spent despite the lack of financial resources, the time constraints, and the challenges I had to face.

The Waiting Game

I have made myself quite anxious for a month now. Well, almost.

I applied for a position that I really wanted but since this is a government post, I have undergone the tedious process of selection and promotion - exams, interviews, and the paranoia of waiting for the result.

Of course, it is a valid feeling when we get excited for the result of something we have been waiting for.

Just like this promotion, I guess I am excited because I want the anxiety to end. I have been sleepless for a number of days last week, and have been fighting the urge to wake up in the middle of the night overthinking about my actions. Did I sound good in the interview? Have I made myself clear in my intentions? Was I articulate in my answers? Did they see me competent? And many others...

The election ban is nearing (March 25) and we are all waiting for the 4 positions to be filled, as appointments are actually made by the Central Office.

I may also be under a lot of stress lately because my headaches haven't subsided. There must be something wrong with me but I fear for what I will discover. Pretty sure the husband will be mad at me for tolerating the pain a tad longer. Must be the hormones though.

So let's wait and see. After all, I have made a vow to always make a better version of myself, with or without the promotion.

The Case of the Coconuts

So after less than three months, the husband flew back to the concrete jungle of Metro Manila for work as he was quite needed there. No, not quite. I guess he was really needed there.

And so, after eighty-four (84) days here in Gensan, 14 of those days spent in quarantine when he arrived, I am back to being alone with the kids and trying to live.

While he was here, he was the same man I married, that guy who would do the laundry, sweep the floor, do carpentry, clean the bathroom, fix some broken things, cook, and most importantly, clean the car!

He was also home to drive me back and forth to the office, or the grocery. And spoiled I am, 'coz for a short while, I was able to just lay on the couch while I watch him do the dishes, fix the table, and wait for him to call when dinner was ready.

But lo and behold, some things are meant to end!

So on Friday, January 15, I brought him to the airport. It was painful, but I have to admit that he is doing this for the family.

Again, I am expected to live. And with it comes the difficulties of having no man to be in charge of the house.

So we were given three coconut heads - buko! My favorite drink. As I have wanted to avoid buying Cokes, buko juice is a personal favorite drink. But not the hardship I have encountered with opening the shell. Ugh!

So I tried to crack open the coconut with a blade that was quite unfriendly. Plus the fact that the shell was really difficult to crack open! The struggle was real!

I remember how some men in the family open coconut heads. They are unlike that mess I have made. I have practically chopped off everything before I came across that little pinhole for the water to come out. And when I wanted the meat, that was a different story.

Natadtad ng maayos ang buko before I let go of it. Sadly, the two other coconuts were of the same story. Mas painful ng sobra ang naranasan nila sa aking mga kamay. 😆😆😆

Of Achievements and Recognitions

Their Recognition Day was set on May 24. I wasn’t there even if parents were supposed to be present. I was attending a Supervisory Training for 5 days in Koronadal City where, had she called for me, I would have immediately came.

She didn’t call me to join her, so I thought it was just fine. I understand that recognitions in Pisay are hard to achieve. Their standards are quite high. So I settled with the fact that she didn’t get to the cut.

Then on May 30, the teacher sent a SMS and explained how she made this huge mistake of not sending my daughter on the stage for her winning moment on the fourth recognition day. Turned out that she submitted a wrong file to the awards committee hence missing out my daughter’s name. She was very apologetic.

I called my husband after having received the message and both of us were in unison of thoughts that we shall dismiss that part on the neglect of the teacher to submit the name of our daughter to the awards committee but focus on what should be a better thing to do.

I felt bad after having talked to my daughter about it. She explained to me that she also expected to be on the honors list after comparing her Math exams results to other students/classmates. She said that her grades were better than those who were up the stage for Director's List. However, she also thought that her grades in Computer Science may have failed her to get to the cut.

I understand her pain as she was crying while telling me those things. But she was very understanding as well when I told her about the honest mistake that her adviser was able to commit. I told her that the going onstage for the Recognition Day may be important but more important to me and her Dad was the fact that she was exerting all her efforts to be better each day in school. She understood.

As a sister and daughter to teachers, I understand how these things could happen. And I know that there will come a time when the stress will be too high should a parent just turn this issue into a balloon. I’d rather dismiss it while acknowledging the fact that the teacher was very apologetic.

So even if it’s late, I am posting this because I am proud of my kids who have become better in their studies, and who proves to us that they are putting all efforts to value our weary days put into work.

Congratulations Raine Cassandra Dumalay! Mommy and Daddy love you and Ric Chris Dee so much!

Meantime, This is How I Am

I could last all day just talking about how I am feeling lately, but things are supposed to get back into its fine mode once I get my strength back.

I'm not busy, but I sure feel tired every day.

I have been given one additional hand in finishing up one program but the rest of my programs are still handled by me alone. The funny thing is, I'm really not yet as busy as the past few days has been. I have actually stopped being the hero that will answer all concerns because I think that each employee given their own share of tasks are supposed to take care of their programs, and they are answerable to it. Still, I just can't help it that I have to give a hand each time there's a need to. I am such a natural hero.

I am feeling unhealthy.

The past months as I quietly breathe by my lonesome, I feel the need to consume more and more calci-blockers because the BP is way too high. Even if I don't feel any symptom at all, I feel paranoid that one day I will just die not knowing it. The 160/110 has been the latest consistent BP. And with the way I monitor it, it gives me heartburns.
Yes, I think I need to go see a doctor. I am really going to see a doctor. I cannot afford to leave this earth without seeing my grandchildren, I swear.
I am sick. Migraine keeps visiting me daily. Damn.

I am lonely.

When Kuya decided he would leave for his studies in Manila, my world crumbled. I did not expect that my eldest would make me feel so alone. But we asked him, we even tried to convince him that Manila is not for him. That what is in Manila can be anywhere in Gensan. That he has already shown to us that he is ready for college by passing the entrance exams of major schools in Manila except for that one big school where he dreamed of going. But he has decided, FEU it is.
And so I will be alone most weekdays as Tabebs is also studying an hour away from me, and stays in the dormitory on weekdays.
I have yet to accept the fact that I am getting older and eventually the kids will leave us for their own happiness.

I am sad.

Dismayed at the result of the 2019 midterm elections. There were a number of glitches that were too obvious that transparency hasn't been real, at all. But nevertheless, I am but one small voice so I will just keep mum about it. I guess, the voice of God has been heard, if indeed it is the voice of GOD.
My candidates did not win, most of them. But I am not sad that they did not win. I am sadder that the attitude of people trying to sabotage each other because of their political affiliations has been too rude, too brutal and for me, too personal. They hurt each other with sad unkind words that they should not be spewing. I am sad that we hit each other with hurtful words but was not able to judge our own ways.

I am angry.

Somebody just took her freedom to say hurtful words about me without having to ask me for validation. This makes me sad because we used to be really good friends. I hate to let go of a friendship that started genuinely, but berating me surely offended me. I have to let go of a friendship that was ruined by people who intends to put my name to shame for reasons I am not aware of. God bless you.

I need a new hobby.

I was invited to teach in college. I want to. But weekends are the only time I have for my daughter. And I just cannot leave her alone on weekends. Cross-stitch again? My eyes are not that superb anymore. Reading? That's a staple. Any recos? Blog-hopping? Yes! Please be there for me when I visit!

I need a vacation.

Yes. I think I need a good vacation. I am trying my best to book a good vacation with the kids. Probably very soon.

I have nothing but great appreciation to male buddies who are supportive to their female partners especially when they have their monthly periods. As we all know, these monthly visits are quite the contrary of "comfort".

But what really does happen when Aunt Flo has come? When we women, have our periods, sometimes we get a little "moody". Sometimes too, a little is just an understatement.

To understand our body better, and what makes us a little cranky during those visits, here's a short but simple way to describe it.

The Beginning

● Days 1-2: The first day of your cycle is the first day of your period. Tissue and blood lining your uterus is the blood otherwise known as your period. Estrogen is low and women often experience fatigue and cramps. You might not feel like it but these days would be good days to exercise. Your mood might not be so great and your energy level is low.

Feel Good

● Days 3-5: Estrogen begins to increase towards the end of your period. This hormone helps boost endorphins or your brain’s “feel good” chemicals. The same one that is released during exercise. Finally, I Can Drive!

Back in 2010 when we had our first second-hand Nissan Altima, I had the guts to try to man the wheel with the husband as my instructor. After a few days of consistent fighting, because both of us could only disagree about mechanical stuff, I gave up on driving.

In December last year, we acquired Sylver, a brand new 2017 Ford Ecosport which the main function is supposed to bring the husband to and from Davao City should he be transferred assignment there. Since the husband's agency doesn't have any inkling of how much we wanted him nearer, and since he is still waiting for that order of transfer, I had to decide in getting educated in driving. At first, I had no intention of learning how to drive because I have had two road accidents which involved the vehicles I was riding. The first one in 2014 in Butuan where we hit a child. And the other one was last year when a vehicle tire came zooming up towards us, I on the front passenger side. Man, those were too traumatic I had nightmares after that.

But the present circumstance is different. The car is already available, but no one is using it. It only gets touched whenever the husband is home, which is only 3-5 days every two months. So there, the car is in a dilemma, I am too. The husband insists on me driving the car or the car will be damaged, or parts of it will because no one is using it.

So I had to pull myself together and enrolled in driving together with my son, who is still underage. My first time in driving gave me an anxiety attack. My heart was palpitating very fast I could hear my heartbeat. Until I was able to man the wheel to and from a straight point, and even in circles. Still, each time I am on the wheel, I get butterflies in my tummy. The jittery feeling does not escape me until such time I had to finish off my session.

So we had parking, reverse parking, highway driving, gear change, and a lot more. Until I was able to drive our own car, still with a drum-like heartbeat.

Recently, I allowed myself a day to finally drive Sylver alone. I took it from my bro-in-law's house where we temporarily deposit the car so he could use it while no one will. I brought it to the office and then home, and then even brought the kids to our house in La Cassandra with it. The challenge was that the engine stops on me, even until now. But I guess that's for starters. There was a point when my daughter would not ride with me for fear of a PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, as per her words). But she did ride with me home from a party when I explained to her reasons why my driving is still clumsy.

Fast forward to barely a month of driving after the lessons and I can already bring myself to and from the office. Hilarious experiences of getting too far from my origin to my destination because of my failure to make a U-Turn happened. Until now though, I cannot park in a mall. I guess I would still need a lot of practice for that. But I can drive! I can already smell the success of me driving long distances, although still with palpitations each time I am behind the wheel.

Driving is not for the faint-hearted. The traffic everywhere we go is one big challenge for me. And the careless drivers who would like to race most times. I guess I would have to deal with them because I have to.

I wish for that time I can already run 80-100kph. For now, my fastest is 40-50-60. I am still learning. There is still so much to learn about driving. But I can already strike this out of my bucketlist. Driving? Check!

My friends who have been sharing fake news and confusing statuses with confusing memes have tasted some pieces of good advice from me to stop sharing them as they add to the confusion and conflict in this already crazy world we have. However, there are still some, who, despite their professional statuses, would continue sharing these things deliberately. To what reason or purpose, I do not know. But for me, it is disappointing and shows complete lack of tact, and probably an ignorance of their common sense, if they do have that.

Way before bloggers made their way in the government and/or political arena, I have been into blogging and worked in the publishing industry for eight years. Moreover, blogging has become a part of my food on the table, and I have also enjoyed perks that go along with the title "blogger".

And then Mocha Uson and Sass Sasot came into the picture, and even more bloggers... and everything became blurry. They who have been sharing intriguing and controversial pictures, news, and even misquoted presidential pronouncement and posted their opinions on FB and who got the ire of many. These things make me cringe.

But teaching our kids a little misdemeanor if only to satisfy our thirst for victory is a different story.

In October, the daughter joined the Division Schools Press Conference after having been trained for countless Saturdays and Sundays. She competed for the Editorial Cartooning. She competed with 24 other elementary students from different schools in the city. She landed 5th place. I told her that it was okay for a first timer into the editorial cartooning competition and that landing 5th is not a bad thing. I even told her it was a challenge that she can do better next time.

But what irked me are these.

The topic given the young journalists was: The Marawi Siege. And they have to draw their cartoons on what the present state of Marawi has been. The fifth picture shows my daughter's work. It was very simple, a work of an amateur, I should say.

I took these pictures immediately after they were posted. Only the First to Fifth Places were posted and were given recognition during the said event. I immediately showed it to the husband in order for him to take notice of her daughter's work as he can compare it with other artists' works, and how she landed on the 5th Place.

Less than two minutes after I have sent these pictures to Ric via messenger and lo and behold, he sent me these:

Look at the similarities of the drawing which landed on first and second places. One cannot deny that these cartoons have been copied, or the editorial cartoonists' idea may have been copied and put into art or drawing for that matter. One cannot deny that the cartoon made my Rene Aranda of the Philippine Star has been claimed to be the young artist's own and even won First and Second Places.

I actually wonder what mode of verification/checking/validation was made by the judges to say that the works of the journalists won without plagiarism. Because clearly, these cartoons have been - by two young artists. Also, these artists have their mentors, so now I wonder what kind of Journalism lessons these mentors teach their proteges.

Sure, one can take a look at pictures and get inspiration from them. But probably not to copy them and put them into art like it was them who conceptualized it in the first place.

I am not griping because my daughter only landed on the Fifth Place. I can see that even on my first look at her drawings compared to the other cartoons. I immediately conceded. But looking at how the first two young artists landed places by taking concepts from previously released editorial cartoons of a professional, one who works with the Philippine Star is a different story.

In September 13, 2012, Dr. Isagani Cruz wrote this in Philippine Star:

"Section 198 (RA 8293) further provides that “the rights of an author under this chapter (Chapter 10) shall last during the lifetime of the author and for fifty (50) years after his death and shall not be assignable or subject to license.” If the author is still alive, I have no choice but to mention his or her name when I take words or ideas from him.

Why ideas? Because plagiarism does not involve only words. It also involves ideas. If I added or altered a word here or there, or even if all my words were different from those of the original author, I would still be committing plagiarism if the idea is the same. This is the main difference between copyright and plagiarism. Copyright protects the expression of an idea or the exact words of the original author. The prohibition against plagiarism protects the idea itself, no matter how it is expressed.

Therefore, using different words or even a different language but expressing the same ideas is plagiarism.

And I guess, the same is true with editorial cartooning.

So, are these the values we teach our young journalists? Is this the way we transform our young writers and journalists? Is this the future of Journalism in this country? If so, then, good luck Philippines!

A Good Body Rest at Body Rest Spa

You know how it is with audits. It gets a little cerebral sometimes. No, not sometimes, it should be most times.

The office's quest towards transitioning from ISO 9001:2008 to ISO 9001:2015 has been exhilarating. While it is true that a good Quality Management System may help tasks to lighten up or be organized, many of my colleagues think otherwise. Yet, we have no choice but move towards continual improvement.

So we traveled from Koronadal City to Tacurong City, that is 4 hours round trip for an audit if you are coming from General Santos City. That was a Wednesday, and come Thursday, I was on my way to North Cotabato, 6 hours round trip travel because again, Audit. And then Friday came, I was the one being audited. As an Internal Quality Auditor (IQA), these tasks are pretty tiring, finding non-conformities or looking for ways to improve the service of the office. It can be pretty taxing to a physical body especially when you are working with your brains and eyes, and the body, too feeble to handle the rough roads.

I posted on FB that I needed a massage. And then I was invited for a massage! Body Rest Spa has been in the salon business for many years now, but it was my first time to be there. I have been a massage addict but since Body Rest Spa is along the National Highway, it does not appeal much to me until I have tried their services.

The interior of the spa is very nice, with all the displays that make it look foreign. A mixture of Asian meets the West. The interior displays are luxurious metalcrafts with a touch of indigenous. Very unique displays are everywhere and the spa looks very welcoming with its water element at the entrance (which I forgot to take a picture of because I was entirely excited for my massage).

Upon entrance to the rooms, you are welcomed by an ambience that's relaxing and a scent that may lull you to sleep while getting that good back rubs.

Body Rest Spa gave me a relaxing massage. One massage that I wanted includes moderate rubs at the back and gentle pressure on the muscle parts. The masseuse was kind enough to ask me if I was enjoying the massage, or if the pressure was enough for me.

The one hour of massage went by swiftly, I was afraid I'd sleep because it was calming to the senses. One thing though is that other customers were kind of noisy, they kept pouring in so you get a little distracted but overall, I enjoyed that massage.

They do have more services like ventosa, sauna, hairs and nail care and hot stones. But because I needed a massage, I need to prioritize what I needed.

I am definitely coming back. Thank you, Body Rest Spa.

When I started blogging, it was because I felt the need to communicate to the world the beautiful things that I have been experiencing and sharing good stuff to people who matter to me, especially family.

2016 Life Accomplishments

Only when you see a good life ahead of you should you risk the race. If you slip and fall, get up and bounce back. If things turned out differently, you have prevailed in trying and nevertheless understood that it wasn't meant for you. But reach for it! Risk the race.

I did, and it brought me tears, but the sweetest is the JOY when you finish the race.

And after you finished the race, wait for other courses or tracks to open, try them once more. Wait patiently because up ahead is someone who will reward you with what you think has been impossible to achieve, what others have been blind in seeing about you. Other people see your struggles and pains, and they think you deserve better opportunities. Other people just don't care.

inLove them anyway.

Never stop dreaming! You will get to the point that you think you have covered all. That is a lie! Do not dwell on it! Stay strong with your cores, be efficient and diligent with what you do. Proceed, do not look back at the mistakes, but look forward - eyes on the prize.

Of Octogenarians and Septuagenarians

When my very own favorite grandma and grandpa died, we weren't there in Antique. We were not even there to pay our last respects because of school and financial limitations. But before we came here in Mindanao to join our parents, my Lolo and Llola cared for me since birth and until I turned Grade 5.

Entering Grade 6, I left them for Mindanao to join my sister and my parents. It was a heartbreak.

They were already in their Septuagenarian days when we left them. And I remember my Tatay Salus, as we fondly called him, roaming the streets near our house and peeing in his pants; he was already in his incontinent state.

My grandmother, sickly and with an enlarged heart at that time, would carefully and patiently dress my grandfather, bathe him and turned him smelling good again. I still remember the two of them going to church together, and leaving church separately. Nanay Connie would bring me home, expecting Tatay Salus to be home earlier until we had to search for him, in neighbors' houses, nearby streets but mostly, we would find him visiting the nearby high school where he used to teach Spanish.

Tatay used to eat sugar after each meal, his simple way of taking in dessert. Nanay Connie would buy him muscovado sugar, at times, that with unrefined stone-sized kind. His favorite pastime was playing solitaire with his deck of cards, something he would consider taboo for us his grandchildren to play with. He never allowed us to play with his cards.

Nanay Connie was so patient with Tatay Salus. Despite his loss of memory, Nanay never lost hers, she was the ever-loving wife to Tatay Salus who would tell me to buy Tatay Salus his portion of pork each time the mailman delivers his pension check. I remember having to ask Nanay for my snacks, sometimes a few centavos would suffice or none at all but a measly piece of bread, but I will always have calamansi juice with me. She was very caring.

I was young then, and I never thought about the hardships that Nanay Connie was experiencing because of Tatay's Dementia or Alzheimers' Disease (we didn't know, we were too poor we never had the chance to have him checked).

Until this time when I had to care for Ric's octogenarian old-maid aunt and two septuagenarians, his Mom and another special old-maid aunt. I have considered it fate that I am stuck with taking care of them. True, we have our very own house away from them, but considering their status, I still have compassion not to leave them three alone in their old house.

And the painful thing is that, the kids and I have to deal with daily banterings of the special aunt and the octogenarian aunt. They don't seem to mix in well especially on the table. (Thank God his Mom is still normal.)

More painful thing is that I have very little patience and I tend to react badly on different scenarios in the house. I would always reprimand the octogenarian aunt for some mishaps like pouring Joy dishwashing liquid on her laundry (yes, she still does her laundry sometimes). At one time it wasn't dishwashing liquid but a sachet of Unique toothpaste she bought from the store.

My daughter would actually cringe at her for eating biscuits and leaving one biscuit uneaten, and left at wherever she last seated. Also, at one time, she kept her toothbrush inside a Lysol bottle, the brush fully soaked in Lysol. So I had to clean it away but she reprimanded me for doing so. And then she said she wanted her toothbrush left untouched, so I did.

Her usual thing would be to harvest malunggay leaves and carefully pick on each leaf to prepare it for use. On a daily basis. And when we see her doing that, we leave her alone, and the malunggay leaves to dry or rot because she would do it over and over again.

Once, maybe she got bored, and there's this newly opened pack of table napkin she would waste time folding. The MIL would be too tired to tell her over and over again to drink her milk only once, and her tablets after every meal. Sometimes when the MIL is at her bad mood, she would shout at her siblings and tell them how cruel God is for not letting her experience good things but these...

Sometimes I thought she would cry but she didn't, I never saw her cry. She is a tough one, my MIL. While the special aunt would bring her walker around, and just sit to watch TV, just like a cat, she would always roar at seeing the octogenarian aunt, especially on the dining table as she would always tell the special aunt what to do and what not to do while eating her meal. And so the big divide happens. The special aunt eats at the kitchen table, the octogenarian aunt at the dining table.

This is an everyday struggle for me and the kids. I have always referred this to Ric, and at times I cry telling him to get us out of this situation, though I always fail. Not because my husband does not allow me to separate from his oldies, but maybe because my conscience continues to convict me every time I think about leaving them. Perhaps, my human side is still acting like that kind person I was raised by my Nanay Connie, patient yet tough.

As to when we will be here with them, struggling with this daily crisis, I do not know. Perhaps God has a reason.

Perhaps it is fate. Perhaps it is love. Perhaps because we are Family.

Family Adventure at Eden Nature Park Skycycle

Few days after graduation, my family decided to take a small vacation even for just one night out of town. On our way to Davao City, part of the itinerary was to drop Eden Nature Park in Calinan, a visit.

I have been to Eden Nature Park thrice but it was my Mom's and sisters' first time. The park was filled with guests and we were not able to get a shuttle tour because we booked so late. But we so enjoyed the Eden Nature Park Skycycle. The combo that was the Zipline and the Skycycle cost P300 only. But we couldn't leave Eden without having tried the Skycycle.

At first, I was apprehensive to try it because of the height. I have tried so many adventures from Lake Sebu zip line to the Cebu's Sky Walk, and many other zip lines in different locations but this Skycycle slightly took my courage away as you have to pedal your way to the finish line and back through a cable, just a cable!

What's worse is that, even if I feel so afraid, I kept faking a courageous front so as not to discourage my children from trying it. I have been teaching them to take courageous steps for as long as it does not mean their deaths. The husband is also one chicken when it comes to adventures like this, but since the children have staged an interest in doing so, we do not want to disappoint them. And so it's a Go! for all of us.

Tabebs, my 10-year old daughter tried her first zip line experience in Lake Sebu, and she was gripping on me real good when she first tried it. And I was afraid she'd feel the same with what we had experienced in Eden Nature Park. But alas! She did not chicken out. She was all go with the experience.

While I was the one afraid for her, she was giving all her strength pedaling her way back and forth. I am so proud of my kids, and Tabebs. See her smile?? I'm sure she had good stories to tell about her summer experience.

Success Is a Staircase Where You Gotta Reach New Levels

Twelve years ago, I had the guts to enroll myself in law school. It was a challenge but it was also fun. I say it was a challenge because I had to struggle waking up in the wee mornings to memorize articles, statutes, EOs and even ordinances. There was so much energy to burn, too many things to do in addition to my being a mother to a toddler, and having an 8-hour day job.

I say it was fun because I was able to meet new friends who shared with me the same passion in writing, reading and working. We were able to enjoy outing after class, dining out and doing group studies.

And then I got pregnant and had to stop in my tracks to care for the life inside me. Working my ass in a publishing company was taking me by the seconds of my life. Some days I just had to slack off and eventually had to stop the day job but later enjoyed being a freelance writer and attending to a business my husband and I had started.

After five years, I had my dream job, a government position, clerical. A year after, I was promoted as officer. It was when I had to sacrifice family dinners and other gatherings despite the short distance of traveling to and from Koronadal City. I find it taxing for me. So I decided getting myself a Graduate degree in Public Administration.

I was transferred to Sarangani Province, a 25-minute ride away from our home, and then was moved again to Gensan. Three years of studying the graduate degree and one grueling year for the thesis paper was what took my time the most.

Eventually, I graduated. And I am quite ecstatic about it because I feel that it was all worth it. A new level of learning, new level of personal triumph, a personal challenge I put upon myself and I survived.

Now I am thinking of trying out the post graduate entrance exam. Another shot at another level. I am doing this as a challenge to myself, to try harder in achieving different levels of personal improvement.

And I thank my family, my husband and my children. They are the wind beneath my wings.

At a Loss with a Pyramid

I used to have the husband by my kids' side in terms of assignments most especially in Math. If there is someone they should call when it comes to graphical requirements and computer works, they call upon their Daddy to assist them. And now, that one moment has come when I needed someone to do the hard stuff for the kids, and I have no one but myself to do it.

I must admit, since he left for work, I have had a few worries. That includes the task of refilling the water dispenser, fixing plumbing works and electrical wires and a few tasks only a strong man could do, (I'm such a weakling, aside from having backbone problems".

So for the last few requirements in school, my daughter was required to create a 3D image of a pyramid. When I learned about what the teacher wanted, I was not happy at all and was out of bounds on how to do it, in fact, it kind of scared me a wee bit.

But I immediately turned to Facebook where most guy friends were online. With the help of Google and friends who sent me instructions on how I could make an equilateral triangle as perfect as possible,

And lo and behold, with some use of creativity I have in mind, our pyramid was made a reality. It may not be perfect but I like it the way it is. I just hope this could pass the daughter's teacher's standards.

Generation Gap in a Bamboo Concert

Forgive me if this blog seemed ignored for like a century already. I have been so busy with so many things work-related plus the thesis and kids and house chores that need attending to.

But seriously, there are a just a lot of things I have to be thankful for, like having wonderful children who help me cook breakfast in the morning, and a daughter who, while there may be tantrums at times, keeps me sane as she joins me in bed while her father is away for work.

So, children. I have a 15-year-old son and a 10-year-old daughter and I am almost but not quite my forties.

I have been very eager to watch Bamboo In Demand Concert here in Gensan because as many would actually know, I am such a fangirl of Rivermaya, a 90's band with Bamboo as the vocalist in their most famed years.

Came Saturday, and I tagged the kids along with the hope that they get to enjoy Bamboo because they see him as a judge in The Voice, a singing competition aired over the TV on weekends.

The concert started with a DJ mixing songs, just like the ones you see when in disco houses or bars as this generation calls it. And then, a front act with a few songs was rendered by Jason Dy, Bamboo's protege in The Voice. While all these things happen, amidst the noise of the music and the blinding lights, my kids were silent. My daughter was on her phone playing Minecraft and my son was hooked to his phone watching episodes of The Office which he saved into his gadget. It felt like I was alone, without a companion. I was asking them if they even enjoyed just a wee bit but the answer was a respectful nod, just that. It's a good thing, we were with a few friends who can relate to my fangirl mode that night.

The generation gap was quite evident in that setting. I believe that they were not able to enjoy the things I liked most because they could not even name a song that Bambo sang. It was all songs that touched my heart while I was in my teens, and not of their generation. Had it been Justin Bieber, I am guessing their hearts could be all screaming at his name and their voices out singing his songs.

I still believe that it was a good weekend with the kids. It was their first time to see a rock concert that their Mom had enjoyed so much. It was a chance to meet their Mom twenty years ago. Well now, at least they knew it was originally Bamboo who sang Hinahanap-hanap Kita and not Daniel Padilla.

All These Zapped My Energy

While I may look okay in my status posts in Facebook and other social media accounts, I have been secretly dealing with unexplainable emotions, most of which are attributable to a period of adjustment with this Long-Distance Relationship I have just entered into.

For quite a long time, the 15 years we have had together with the husband has made me feel secure in his arms, every day, every night that we are together, even those times that I am out for seminars and official travels, and he with the same.

It has been revealed in my previous post that he will be away for work, and I have not really grasped the idea, until the following days without his presence near me and the kids. It looked as though things have not been falling into place, and that my days are incomplete.

The excitement that I felt for him with his new work settled in less than two weeks or so, and was replaced with sorrow and worries. At first, I was elated at the fact that he will be joining a new workplace, this time more secure, and I am happy that what he has been quietly looking for has been granted him. I know for a fact that he has been searching for himself and that he is in need of personal fulfillment just like what I found when I got in the position where I am now. It feels really good to have a career that will embrace you and will call you as its own, minus the contracts that need to be renewed annually.

My bloated pride has suddenly been replaced with worry just by looking at the his pictures of the small cramped bedroom he is sharing with four other bedspacers. Panic sank in me just wondering if he is eating properly, and what foods does he eat with the soaring prices Manila does offer. And what feeling washed over me knowing he is traversing Intramuros back and forth from his workplace to his boarding house daily (almost 3 kilometers) because the price of padyak is way too high to squeeze into his budget.

Moreover, I am scared that with his knowledge and expertise with his new work assignment, his bosses will see him as an asset and will not allow him for a transfer to someplace near his family. My trust in him has not been tarnished but I wonder what kind of friends will he entertain and will they be the kind of friends I would like him to mingle with.

I think I am overthinking. Way overboard.

Add to this scenario the fact that I have been sleeping on my thesis which is supposed to be submitted by the end of November, and which should be defended by first of December.

Plus the kids, the dogs, and this abnormally high BP.

The fact that work has been a constant duel, and laundry is a consistent weekend enemy. That and many more, I wonder if I could get away with all these, and emerge beautifully successful.

Again, I think I am overthinking. So help me God.
