Stop Motion

Stop Motion Animation has always intrigued me. Not quite animation, not quite video, not quite photography. It's almost a category of its own. But after all these years of film making, I have never once made a stop motion animation film. And, I wanted to squeeze a Christmasy video on here before the class officially ended. So, here is my first attempt. This is the product of hours of surprisingly frustrating work.

A tip for anyone interested in trying this: Always make sure your hand is completely out of frame before moving on to the next position. I cannot stress this enough. Also, hats off to those who do this for a living. I cannot imagine how much work goes into a project longer than 40 seconds...

As I mentioned above, the videoblogging class is coming to an end. This is, in fact, the last "official" post for the class. Will I post more? Oh defiantely (actually, this video here has given me an idea for some videos... check for them in 2007). Will I post every week? Highly doubtful. I will post, however, as often as my schedule allows, and as often as my brain can keep pumping out ideas. We're just getting started. So stay tuned. More Skim Milk after these messages...

The task: Film, edit, and post a video in 1 hour and 50 minutes; what we like to call "speed-vlogging."
The result: A collaboration with Deep Thoughts--Having received a bag of candy from Hot Air Balloon Comfort just moments before, we decided to share the love with people on campus... and to film the results.
Thanks to all who participated, and I apologize to all who were creeped out.

school of rock

My on-going affiliation with the local rock band The Post Mortems took me to Johnson Elementary School in Davenport over the weekend. This post is best viewed in the context of the short documentary on the band (which can be seen here, if you haven't already), but I think this behind-the-scenes video stands on it's own. I, of course, have seen the documentary, so I might be a little biased.

This is something a little different...

As a side note, I came up with this idea while I was out driving. I had my camera with me, but not much else. And since I was a good half-hour from my house, I had to use what random things I found in my trunk to make a really bizarre set-up.

Now if only there was a way to patent that...

You, me, and ADD

This one needs some explaination.

Whenever someone asks me what it's like having ADD, I always have a hard time explaining it, explaining how my mind works. So I had an idea for a video.
The other day I was sitting in one of my classes and wrote down every thought I had in a roughly two-minute period. Then over the next few days, I video taped the things I thought of, or things that represented those thoughts. I'd also like to point out, that I had to go to the bathroom during this.

I don't know if I succeeded in getting my point across, but it looks like my mind to me--no pattern whatsoever.

Running Late

I woke up late this morning... incredibly late. We're talking an hour and 38 minutes late. And as I was speeding down the interstate in an attempt to get to class on time, my still groggy brain had a thought: Why is knowing what time it is so important? Yeah, it's nice to know when exactly your favorite TV show is on, but wouldn't life be so much easier if we just let things happen when they happen?

The whole invention of time always makes me feel hurried, late. "I only have so much time to get this done." "Oh, I wonder what time it is." "I wish I had more time to sleep." And there it was. All of these semi-coherent thoughts were because I wanted to sleep some more. But it got me thinking... maybe I won't put some much emphasis on time anymore, at least, when I have control over it; when I'm not at school, or work; you know, on my own time.
