Hill Aerospace Museum

Luke and I spent a few hours at a local Aerospace museum today. I made a friend at a mid-singles Institute (religion) class last night. She and I have a lot in common and really hit it off right away. So today, we went with her and her kids to the museum. Taylor and Carly went with their dad down to Provo to tour the BYU campus and hike the Y.

So this museum is only about 10 minutes away and completely free. I guess it did cost me a few pennies for the kids to put down one of those spinning funnel things. Luke really enjoyed seeing all the planes and rockets and missiles.

I thought it was cool seeing the Aerial Reconnaissance Cameras

The little planes would have been so fun to play with, unfortunately they were only for display.

Luke carried the map of the museum with him the entire time (reminded me of his dad). He also HAD to get a picture by the plane that is his favorite color!

After the museum, we quickly went home and made a picnic and went to the park with our new friends for lunch and play. We spent about 2 1/2 hours there and had a great time eating, playing, feeding the ducks, and getting soaked in the water fountain.

Taylor’s Egyptian God Project

Taylor had to do a project on an Egyptian god. As part of the project he had to dress up like the god and do a short bio of it.

My name is Sokar. I am the god of the underworld. I also have a connection with craftsmen. The Egyptians came to the upper park of Egypt to worship me. Some people think that I was a combination of three gods, but I was really just strongly linked with two other gods, Phat and Osiris. Phat was the chief god of Memphis. There were always large festivals in Memphis to worship me. Osiris is the god of the dead, and that is how we are linked since I am the god of the underworld. I am usually recognized in a mummified body with a hawk head.

Bittersweet Day

As of about 9am this morning, Jae and I are official divorced. For me it is a bittersweet day. I am sad for a marriage that has ended, but I am excited about the future and starting anew. I wasn't able to go to the temple today, but I did the next best thing, I spent it at Temple Square with Luke and an old friend from college and her kids and mother-in-law. My friend and I haven't keep in close contact over the years, but it was so great to see her and her cute family. She and her mother-in-law were so great about talking through things with me.

I arrived early and Luke and I wandered the grounds. I let him out of his stroller and just let him explore. He wandered all over the temple grounds and temple square. We talked about the temple and the Angel Moroni.

We really enjoyed the south visitors center. It has a great display about the Salt Lake temple and what it took to build it. The 3-D rendering was AWESOME! They have enhanced the visitors center so much with exhibits and technology. It was great.

Then we went to the North Visitors Center and saw a replica of the city of Jerusalem. Of course the highlight is seeing the Christus. So gorgeous, and the spirit that it eminates just put me in awe. Peace. My friend’s son (I think is around 7 or so) ran up ahead of us and when we got up there, we found him kneeling and praying. It was seriously one of the cutest things I have ever seen in my life!

After the visitors center we got to take a tour of the Conference Center. I had never been there and was in complete awe. It was so big. 21,000 people! 7,000 on each level. I think they said the pipe has over 7,000 pipes as well. It was so cool to be up near the pulpit where our prophet and apostles are the mouthpieces of the Lord, teaching us his will for us. We learned that the pulpit was actually made from a walnut tree that was dying from President Hinckley’s yard. Pretty cool! The conference center was full of original art. Painting and statues that were so incredible. Love the water features as well. Seeing the rooftop gardens were awesome. I can’t wait to go to a General Conference meeting in that building! Not a bad seat in the house!

After saying goodbye to our friends, Luke and I went back down to the temple by the reflecting pool. I sang to him “I Love to See the Temple” and we threw some coins into the pool with our wishes. Luke even skipped one.

Such a great way to spend the day. I can’t wait to take the older kids back. Maybe once they have the lights turned on.

The Pumpkin Patch

For family home evening, we went to a local pumpkin patch. The sky was getting pretty dark and we could see that it was raining hard just west of us, so we knew we had to hurry.

The kids loved going out into the field to find their own pumpkins. Carly found hers pretty quick.

Luke was pretty quick with his two. In his excitement he just threw his pumpkin into the cart and the stem kind of fell off.

Taylor was a lot more discerning though. He had to find just the right BIG one. He went way out into the field and searched and searched.

He finally found his pumpkin!

We made it out just as the rain started to fall. Then we headed to Dairy Queen for FHE treats. Grandma LOVES their pumpkin blizzards. We planned on having our lesson when we got home. But, we ended up getting a good lesson right at DQ. There was a family in front of us who had ordered and when it was time to pay the husband and wife both thought the other had brought money. They were just going to have to go home with no dessert. Grandma and Grandpa, in their generosity, offered to pay for their treats. The family was so grateful and asked what they could do in return. Grandpa just said, “help another family in the future if you can.” What a great lesson on service, charity, and paying it forward!

Our new home

The kids and I are doing great as we get settled into our new home. My mom and dad have been so fabulous in helping us find a place for everything. The kids are doing well in school and are making lots of friends. There is a family that lives right behind us that has a 12 year old boy (a grade older though) and a 9 year old girl. Perfect! And their mom is so sweet and thoughtful. She has her kids invite other friends over too so that my kids get to know more people. Such a blessing! Carly even got invited to go to a birthday party last Saturday.
Taylor started practicing with his new club last week. He is coming in at just the end of the season, so he won’t be able to play here in the fall. But, he will hopefully get to play on an indoor team atleast one session in the winter and then will start up again in the Spring. The new club is really good and so he is having to work hard to get up to their level.
We love having Zack and Hilary around. They come over quite often and we’ve even gone out in the evening to see Zack play softball and flag football.
So, since so many people are asking me what our new home is like, I did a little video tour to show you. (Removed) We feel very blessed to have my parents capable of helping us out in such a huge way. It would have been so much harder on all of us if we didn’t have their love, support, and their basement

Settling in

With the help of men from my parents church, we unloaded the truck to the storage unit and house in less than hour. It was amazing! Everyone seemed so happy to help and several welcomed me and said they were excited to have our family in the ward.

I spent the rest of the day unpacking and getting the kids and I settled. It was a big job and the kids weren’t thrilled about helping out, but they did it anyway.

Sunday, Luke woke up throwing up. So I stayed home with him while Taylor and Carly went to church with Mom and Dad. There are quite a few kids their age and they were excited to get to know them better. The family that lives behind my parents have a son that is 12 (but is a grade older than Taylor) and a daughter that is in 4th grade with Carly. Couldn’t be any more perfect!

The kids were excited to start school on Monday. I took them to school and we found their classrooms and met their teachers. Carly has Mrs. Saunders and Taylor has Mrs. Young. They rode the bus home and both gave their day a 10 out of 10! They had a great day and were excited to go back.

I have spent more time getting us unpacked and settled. I am just about done. I am going to do a little video for my next post showing everyone our new home.

Driving to Utah

My goal was to leave for Utah at 6am. We were pulling out the driveway at 6:22am, so not too shabby. We drove to Denver the first day so that we could stay with the Cantwells that night. We always love seeing them..and hey, it’s FREE!

It most places they have really improved the rest stops. There is a rest stop in the north east corner of New Mexico that we have stopped at a few times that is NOT nice…but when you’re out in the middle of nowhere and it’s the only place to stop…ya gotta do it. This sign always gives me the creeps. Although they have similar signs at lots of rest stops…

It took us about 14 hours to get to Denver. The kids were great in the car (as usual). Taylor is big enough now (he’s taller than me!) to ride up in the front seat. So, it was nice to have a co-pilot.

This morning, we left the Cantwell’s at about 8am. It was about 7 hours to my parents house from there. We arrived in the late afternoon. Dad arrived with the truck late that evening.

We will unload tomorrow morning.

Moving Day

Most of the house is packed. It really wasn’t too bad and I did it by myself. A few friends came over here and there to help (Paula & Emily). But my girls showed up in full force today as we had to finish packing because tonight we were loading the truck. Rachel Boyd, Stephanie, and Marcie spent the morning with me packing. As always we laughed and laughed as we went about the tasks. We went to lunch and were joined by Laura. Stephanie helped me get the U-haul Truck. Marcie took my kids after school until Jae was ready to take them.

Here are a couple of pictures of the truck. It is a 26’ and I parked it all by myself! I was so proud :)

Sister Evans (the Relief Society President) came over to help with a few last minute things. I hired professional movers to help pack the truck and the Elders Quorum from church was going to be unloading the house.

Packing the truck went really well. The professionals were AWESOME and got everything loaded securely. Thanks to Ryan Townsend for being our spanish translator. It helped out a lot. It took about 4 hours to get the truck loaded. My dad showed up about 8:30 and drove off with the truck as soon as it was loaded. I was so grateful that he was able to come into town and drive the truck up to Utah for me. Thanks Dad!

During the loading and afterwards, friends came in droves to wish us luck and say their goodbyes. There were quite a few tears shed.

Stephanie and her daughters Emily (who has been my babysitter for the last 3 years) and Camryn (a good friend of Luke’s) came to say goodbye. They come to Wyoming during the summer, so I know we’ll be seeing them again. That is the ONLY way I got through that one.

Once the truck was loaded and gone and everyone else left, Marcie and Rachel Ralston came. They helped me get everything ready to load the car and leave early the next morning. They were such a great help. It was late…and was time to go. As they left and I closed the door, all the emotion that had been battling inside exploded. I barely made it a few steps and fell to the ground and cried for about 30 minutes. What am I going to do without these great women in my life? I am so grateful for facebook and email so that it is easier to keep in touch. But it is not the same as seeing my best friends almost every day.

Such a bittersweet day. I enjoyed true friendship with some of the most wonderful women in the world. They have helped me through some of the most difficult days of my life and I can not thank them enough for the endless support, love, and eternal friendship that they have so willingly shared with me. They have truly blessed my life in more ways than they will ever know. As I move on to this next chapter in my life, I know that they will always be there for me. Thank you to everyone who helped me pack, and move, and survive! Now, bawling my eyes out will resume....

We spend some time with other friends in bits and pieces as our time in McKinney was drawing to an end.

The Singh family invited us over after soccer practice to hang out and eat pizza. Taylor has known Arjun and Kabeer since 1st grade and they have been playing soccer together for the last couple of years. Luke has loved playing with Vicrum too.

I know I’ve mentioned in previous posts that Taylor’s Sunday School teacher for quite a few years owns a bakery here in McKinney. She brought by this gorgeous cake to say goodbye. It says “Ya’ll come back.” It was totally delicious and so pretty to look at. Those chocolate shavings on top were YUMMY!

Many friends invited me (and sometimes the kids) out to lunch or for dinner. Everyone was so wonderful and made us feel really special. Thank you!

Dread…

I’ve dreaded writing this post for quite a while now. Normally our blog is a happy place where we share our memories with friends and family but it is also a place where I keep a record of our family. This post is much needed for the records, but it is not a happy fun post. But the next few posts won’t make any sense if I don’t do this one. So here goes…

After much prayer, fasting, visits to the temple, counseling with my therapist, bishop, and parents, I made the decision to divorce Jae. It was not a decision I made lightly or quickly. We have struggled for a very long time. I had counseled with the Lord on many occasions over the past 8+ years about what I should do with my marriage and the Spirit always told me to keep trying. And so, I pushed on.

The last year and a half have been particularly hard. We both have been seeing an LDS counselor together and separately to help us work through our issues. We actually even separated for a while last year. But things just weren’t changing. I really tried to be happy and push forward. I tried to do things and make plans hoping that if I just did [this] it would make it better. It didn’t.

I once again, counseled with the Lord and the Spirit’s guidance had changed. I felt very strongly that I had put in the work and the time and it was ok to be done. Then, a whole new set of things came into play. I was SCARED! How would I make it financially? How would I take care of my children? But as time went on and I could see things falling apart more and more, I decided I couldn’t live in fear of the future. That if the Lord said I could go, he would provide a way.

Once I made the decision, I called my parents. They were supportive. I spoke to my bishop and then started making plans. We were going to be leaving for our trip to Colorado and Utah in a few days and I needed that time to get things worked out.

While in Utah, my parents and I started talking and making plans. Things were just falling into place. When I got home, I told Jae. He moved out of the house the next day and the kids and I prepared to move to Utah to live with my parents. We all felt that living with them would provide me the opportunity to go back to school and finish my degree and give the kids the stability and security they need at this time. I am so grateful for parents who are able to help us this way. I don’t know what I would have done without them.

The divorce proceedings have gone fairly smoothly considering the circumstances. If all goes as planned, October 17 will be the day. It will be a sad day. I know that my Heavenly Father never likes to see families come apart, but I also know that He wants his children to be happy.

The kids and I are doing really well. We all have our moments, but overall we are all very happy. Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers over the last couple of months (and beyond). They helped more than you will ever know!

The BYU football came to Austin, TX to play the University of Texas. Jae took Taylor down to Austin, with his dad and brother Mike, for the game. They had such a great time. They went to the fireside on Friday night and then went to the game tonight. Taylor looked AWESOME with his face painted.

My good friend Tamma came up to visit me this weekend. I love her. She is such a good friend. We got dressed up for the game at our house too. We were sad to see the Cougars lose though :(

Scout & Tenderfoot

Grandma Partridge, Alisha, and Nathan, Alexa, and Max came to visit us for a few days while Grandpa and Uncle Sam were in Alaska fishing. The 3-year olds had so much fun together. It is so cute to see them all playing and interacting now. We love cousins!!!

Colorado

On Sunday the kids and I headed to Colorado to visit our good friends the Cantwells in Denver. We miss them so much and love seeing them whenever we absolutely can.

On Monday, we spent most of the day at the pool in their neighborhood. The kids had a blast and it was SO HOT! I had forgotten how intense the sun feels at that higher elevation. Even with a ton of sunscreen I still got FRIED! Fortunately the kids didn’t.

On Tuesday, we went to the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder. It was a cool place up in the mountains that had a lot of science experiments for the kids to look at and then some outdoor hiking. It was pretty cool and the kids enjoyed it. It was a beautiful day.

Wednesday we took the kids to see Rio at the dollar theatre. Such a cute movie.

Throughout our stay we played the Wii game “Just Dance 2.” It was so much fun watching the girls dance (Madison is an AWESOME dancer and Marin has so much attitude, it was hilarious!) that even Carrie and I joined in.

We had a great time with the Cantwells, but it was time to head home on Thursday.

Family Reunion

I didn’t take any photos, but we spent the day at Smith & Moorehouse Campground with the Myers side of the family. It was so good to see all my aunts and uncles, cousins, and my dad’s extended family. The kids had fun fishing, playing with chalk, and playing with cousins.

Uncle Rex is so great! He is always willing to take us out on in his awesome boat whenever we come into town. We got an early start. Cousin Angie and her cute little baby boy, Corbin, joined us as well.

The water was so fabulous! It was actually warmer than the air that early in the morning. Angie actually went out first. I didn’t get any photos of her though :( She had not wakeboarded in two years because of being pregnant, but of course she was totally awesome!

Taylor was up next. He tried really hard over and over to get up wakeboarding. And he was oh so close, but just couldn’t quite stand up all the way. I am sure if he would go on a consistent basis he’d have to problem. I was so proud of him for trying to hard though.

Carly didn’t want to try wakeboarding yet, so she went on the ski trainer again this year. She did great and was confident enough to stand up and even asked to go faster. Brave girl!

So…then it was my turn. I have been around boats, skiing, etc. on and off my entire life. I have only gotten up on waterskis once, and that was the night before I left for BYU and a friend held me in position on the beach. I’ve tried waterskiing many times since and have never gotten back up. Last year I tried wakeboarding for the first time and didn’t make it up then either. But this year…I was determined. And I DID IT!!!!! It wasn’t for long, and it definitely wasn’t pretty…but I DID IT!!!! and I was so excited!

Taylor tried kneeboarding next. It took some getting used to, but eventually he got the hang of it and had some fun.

Like I said before, the water was SOOOOOOOOOOO nice! Luke loved getting in with Grandma (who also got up on the wakeboard but would not allow any photos to be published).

Hogle Zoo

This afternoon, Mom and I took the kids to Hogle Zoo. It was such a beautiful afternoon. The weather was perfect. Not too hot, and overcast. We actually got a little bit of rain, which was fine too.

We loved seeing the 2 year old baby elephant. She was so cute!

The monkeys were so cute grooming each other.

The Zoo is having a dinosaur exhibit right now. The dinosaurs are very lifelike. They move (even their eyes) and make sounds. Luke was terrified!

The tigers were magnificent. There is actually a male and female and their 3 sons who are about 2 years old. Gorgeous, huge creatures!

The giraffes are fun. They tongues totally creep me out though.

We loved the lion’s mouth drinking fountain. I remember drinking out of them as kid. So does my mom. They’ve been around for a LONG time!

They have tons of different kids of birds. We kind of felt bad for them. In Brian Regan’s words “Thank you for the small cage. We have been given the gift of flight. We’ve read the newspapers and even whited out some of the typos.”

Weird camels….

The kids loved the Carousel. Luke rode the Kangaroo, Taylor – the Eagle, and Carly – the dolphin.

We saw an Armadillo – in other words a Texas Speedbump. I don’t know that I have actually seen a live armadillo before. Usually just roadkill.

In the evening, Dad, Zack, and Hilary joined us at the zoo and we got to see it all again.

And lastly, we rode the train and saw a few animals that we wouldn’t have gotten to see otherwise.

It was a fun day. And to end the evening, Dad took us to Red Robin for dinner. Yum! And guess who was sitting at the next table over? Elder Holland! He came over and shook my kids hand. So great!

Riding Horses

This morning the kids got to go ride horses and one of Grandma’s neighbors. Sister Evans was so good with them. The kids started by grooming their horse, learning how to properly brush them and make their coats shiny.

Then, Sister Evans taught Taylor how to properly ride a horse. He practiced going around cones and doing figure 8’s. He had to learn how to turn, stop, and go. He was nervous, especially because it was a lot of information to take in at once. But he did great. By the end he was able to go out into the arena and trot. Pretty good!

Then Carly got to ride too. Sister Evans didn’t have a saddle small enough for her, so she rode without a saddle. She had to practice getting on and off and using her legs to help guide the horse as it was being led by Sister Evans. She was really nervous at first, but the more she did it, her confidence grew.

Even Luke got a turn riding the horse. He rode bareback and held onto the horses mane. I walked along side and held him as he rode. He loved it.

Cherry Hill

I have no pictures…we had too much fun. We took the kids to Cherry Hill to go to the waterslides today. We met my cousins Angie and Melanie and their kids there. Taylor and Carly love the waterslides. Mom and I went with them a couple of times and it was so fun. We actually tried to take Luke on Cardiac Canyon. We put on his lifejacket and put him in the middle of the tube. Let’s just say…it didn’t work very well. He kept falling out and going under the water. The lifeguard finally had to help us down to the bottom. He says he had fun…but wasn’t anxious to do it again. The same with the Dragon ride. He liked it, but didn’t want to do it again. Luke preferred to stay in the Pirate’s cove going on the slide and playing in the fountains.

Tonight Grandma-Great, Zack, and Hilary came over for dinner. We had such a yummy healthy meal. BBQ chicken, sweet potatoes fries, roasted asparagus, and corn on the cob. YUMMY!!!!

We got up this morning and got ready to head up to Kaysville. Luke found Grandpa’s train clock and wanted him to play it for him over and over and over. He loved it along with the Cuckoo Clock and the Grandfather Clock.

Mom drove up to Kaysville from St. George with me today. We had an easy trip but I had to pay $4.04 per gallon for gas in Beaver! Holy cow! I have never had to pay that much for gas EVER!
Zack and Hilary took Taylor and Carly to Boondocks for the night. Luke loved playing outside in Grandma’s backyard. Neighbors have a playground and a teeter-totter. He also made a new friend, Soapie (Sophie), a little Chilean girl who is staying with Uncle Rex next door with her mom, Marcela. Cousin Paige met Marcela when she was on her mission to Chile. Luke also loved driving the jeep around, but he definitely needs more practice.

On Saturday the kids got to ride their four-wheelers. I even got to go on a ride for the first time in a couple of years. The kids love it here. Here is Taylor tearing it up on his four wheeler

On Sunday, before church, Luke and I played Tinker Toys and made this windmill. He was so proud of it.

We went to church in Alton. The speakers were excellent. In the afternoon, I helped mom with some photoshop projects. Zack and Hilary came around dinner time and then we played Garbage and Settlers of Catan. Taylor set up dominoes all over the kitchen. So cool to see them all knock over. Every single one worked!

Today, we cleaned up the cabin and got all packed up to head to St. George. The kids and I stopped in Toquerville on the way to St. George to see Grandma Higgins. We didn’t stay long, but we really enjoyed our visit with her. I hope it made her day to have some unexpected visitors.
That night, Aunt Vicki, Grammy and Grandpa-Great, Grandpa and Grandma, the kids and I went to Tuacahn to see The Little Mermaid. Tuacahn is this awesome amphitheater set in the red mountain around St. George. The production was amazing. They flooded the stage for the scenes on the sea. They had great special effects to make it look like it was under water. The kids LOVED it. Luke was tired, but he was completely mesmerized and stayed awake almost to the end. Carly has really been into Theatre Arts lately. I asked her if she thought she would like to be in this iplay. She said “yes.” I told her maybe she could play Ariel. She said she could because her costume would be immodest. Isn’t that so sweet! Such a good girl!

A peaceful day at the cabin

We didn’t really do a whole lot today. Mom made French Toast for breakfast. It’s always so yummy. The kids had fun playing with a bowling set Mom brought as well as the tinker toys and the XBox. It was really beautiful outside. I loved sitting on the deck in the shade watching my kids explore the woods, play with water guns, and earn some money doing chores, like picking up pine cones, and weeding.
My Grandpa and Grandma came up this afternoon. The kids loved seeing them too. I love that the kids have such a great relationship with all their grandparents. It makes my heart happy.
We didn’t get to ride the four wheelers today. The batteries were dead and we had to order new ones. They should be here tomorrow. The kids are excited to ride their own four wheelers that Grandpa bought them last year. Tomorrow! Yay!
Dad, Mom, Taylor and I played Settlers of Catan tonight. I was in the lead the whole game and then Dad game out of nowhere and won the game. We had so much fun. I love playing games with my family.
Off to bed. It’s late!
