Research Networks - British Council - Science

Second only to the general concept of Web 2.0, virtual worlds are the source of more articles in PubMed than any other emerging social technology.
Of the many virtual worlds, Second Life (a free, open source 3d virtual world platform) is the one with the strongest presence in health care communities, from patient groups and medical education to research and professional meetings.
Second Life can enable health systems to create either public or secure private spaces for functions from patient education, outreach, staff training, remote meetings, or more. As with any social technology, understanding the context and norms of the online space are essential to making institutional engagement a success.
In this session, we will look at case studies illustrating how some organizations have used Second Life for communication, collaboration and community engagement.

Perplexity Peccable, also known as Patricia Anderson, is the Emerging Technologies Librarian for the Health Sciences at the University of Michigan, focusing on social technologies and Science 2.0.
In this role she serves as the community manager for Wolverine Island, the University's home in Second Life.
Ms. Anderson is also the senior author of the Medical Library Association Encyclopedic Guide to Searching and Finding Health Information on the Web, with significant expertise in systematic review methodologies.

Taskforce Web 2.0 EAHIL Startup!

The latest issue of the Journal of Eahil contains an article called : Working, Sharing, Communicating, Learning and Teaching with others : the use of Web 2.0 tools for EAHIL Council, Board and Members. The original proposal was written in Januari 2009 by Guus van den Brekel, Ronald van Dieën, Oliver Obst and put to the EAHIL Board in Februari. You can read the edited version for the JEAHIL just below in the first post of this blog. (It is showing a pdf version in a "social publishing tool" called Scribd) This is what we finally are trying to achieve: "The proposal envisioned the following environment where

appropriate social networking tools for EAHIL members and member organisations are introduced, explained and discussed to understand how useful some of these technologies can be in libraries.
experiences and reviews of different tools are gathered and published. Aspects to enclose are local differences and trends between EAHIL countries, to learn what the applied use and benefits could be for any medical library, it's staff and its customers/patrons. (Comparable to Library Success Wiki)

The Taskforce Blog will be a central point where new developments will be discussed and published. A place to get into contact with the Taskforce members and others. It started with a Tweet on wanting to know who was using LibGuides in Medical Libraries. At the University of Groningen the libraries are working on making SUBJECT GUIDES with LibGuides and I thought the fastest way to find out what and where was a quick Tweet.
Of course I should have searched for myself IN LibGuides to find out, but this way was more easier, and I believe using the contacts in Twitter makes it possible to get móre than just the links and recieve also experiences and comments. Other also now know I am working on that in Groningen...

The use is very different. Some actually look a bit like Netvibes Universes, but without the sharing part and with the option of moving stuff around of course for the users. Here is one from Becker Medical Library on Medical Podcasts

A really nice well-filled example of a Subject Guide (but they call if Research Tools ...) for Medical Students can be found at http://guides.mclibrary.duke.edu/medstudents

The Dental Medicine Subject Guide from the Harvard Medical School is great, and shows a nice mix of library related services for Dentistry, the use of resources, news, books, specialities, although you might think that users could get lost in the great amount of data.

The very large amount of subject guides were created by by the staff of the Norris Medical Library "Subject Guides: Research assistance and useful resources" (49 guides!)

Alliance Library System is pleased to make the final report for the project “Share the Health” available on the web at http://www.alliancelibrarysystem.com/pdf09/Sharethehealthfinalreportmay2009.pdf.

This project was funded with a contract from the National Library of Medicine Greater Midwest Region.

“We are very pleased that this project accomplished so much in terms of helping people with disabilities and chronic health conditions learn where to find credible health information and also how to navigate the virtual world of Second Life,” stated Kitty Pope, ALS Executive Director. “Much of this population is homebound and virtual worlds give them the opportunity to experience things they would not otherwise get to do.”

Virtual Ability, the new orientation center for people with these conditions in Second Life, was partially funded through this project. Virtual Ability was a recent co-winner of the prestigious Linden Prize with Studio Wikitecture. There were over 230 entries and this is the first vendor award of its type in virtual worlds.

“The many library services available in Second Life increase it’s utility for people with disabilities and chronic health conditions. The resources on HealthInfo Island are particularly pertinent,” stated Alice Krueger, president of Virtual Ability, Inc. “ We were pleased to partner with ALS in developing the intake and new resident orientation facilities on Virtual Ability Island, adjoining HealthInfo Island on the east.”

Acutezorg.nl : Dutch knowledge portal for Acute Care

At the Zorg 2.0 Event on March 24th the website of the Dutch knowledge portal for acute care was launched called AcuteZorg.nl.
AcuteZorg.nl wants to exchange knowledge and information among professionals, foster care, by providing a digital platform with reliable information. In addition the aim is to introduce the possibilities of new media to health care professionals. One part of the site is under the tab "Library".

I had the honour to meet Bertalan Mesko this week at the Zorg 2.0 conference in Nijmegen. The 24-year old medical Hungarian student and internet entrepreneur with Webicina.com.
The medical library world knows him as the person behind ScienceRoll, one of the most read medical blogs about web 2.0 and the mash-up with health care.
He spoke about the use of communities for professionals in health care. With the use of Second Life as educational tool, the experience of two communities and how the training can be embedded.
It is his aim to help medical professionals and patients enter the web 2.0 era by providing them with e-courses, consulting and personalized packages. First ones he launced are Diabetes and Depression.
Berci is also responsible for the web 2.0 meta medical search engine you can see in the left menu of this blog.
One the useful tools to help professionals to keep up to date is his PeRSSonalized Medical Search. It offers quick conversion of your PubMed search strategy into RSS overviews that can be saved and personalized.

Portable Firefox to Demonstrate Library Toolbar

It is not new and we have been using it often, but not blogged about it. The Central Medical Library of the UMCG is doing presentations and demo's on a regular bases at departments of the hospital to show what services are available. We also show new developments in Healthcare and web 2.0 and try to make applied use of it. At some places we can not show our Library Toolbar, because the default browser in the hospital is Internet Explorer and, as you would suspect, not everybody has admin rights to install software like Firefox. To be abled to show at least how the Library Toolbar works, we use a usb-stick with a portable version of Firefox with the toolbar pre-installed and so far it is really working fine!

The Zorg 2.0 (Health2.0) Event in Nijmegen was a great success. The range of talks and perspectives was very broad, but also gave a number of specific good examples of good practice in Health2.0 projects.

Have a look at the presentations and you will see how to make healtcare more transparant and make the best use of web 2.0 tools to enhance communication and interaction between patient and healtcare professionals.
Arrange the care around the patients and not around the doctors. Train your staff to deal with, to engage and emerge in this vision of healthcare.
Choose your applications wisely to get, use, adapt or even create your own best applied use of it in your organization. It is not about the tools, but about the whole process and workflow around healthcare and your vision.
It will have influence on all aspects, but has to be introduced with care and step by step.

Health questions drive internet users age 73 and older to the internet just as frequently as they drive Generation Y users, outpacing teens by a significant margin.
Researching health information is the third most popular online activity with the most senior age group, after email and online search. Pew Research generations Online

For many HealthCare professionals the possibilities of the Web are still hidden.
The Zorg 2.0 Event wants to improve awareness, share information and learn healthcare professionals about the challenges the Internet has to offer. (automatic translated english version)
New media such as weblogs, online communities, Twitter, podcasts, vodcasts, RSS feeds, can support professionals in the exchange of information but also in exchange of experiences, facilitate hospital admissions, etc.
The internet can also be used as a 2-way communication between professionals and patients. The optimal use of the Internet in patient and healthcare is called Health 2.0.

A small aspect (but certainly not unimportant) of this is the searching for scientific medical publications and keeping up to date for medical staff. The largest, most used and free accessible web-based database is Pubmed.
In a workshop of one hour I will show the excellent functionalities PubMed has to offer to find more relevant publications easier and faster in combination with alert and personalisation options (e.g. MyNCBI & RSS).
Participants will try alternative interfaces that use Pubmed (and other databases) for finding publications on emergency -and related- medical services. Scanning, saving, sharing & re-using PubMed and other web data via personal startpage tools will be shown as well.
The Zorg 2.0 also offers workshops in Twitter, Linkedin, Pod- & Vodcasts and Second Life.

MyCroft Project Plugins : OpenSearch & Libraries

Sometimes I forget that the Compose editor of Blogger is really cool for simpy copy&paste stuff from webpages. I have often used it to have a peek into the source code of all kinds of embedded multimedia in websites.
But now I want to share some new OpenSearch plugins I created via the MyCroft Project. You can see the (still small) list of my plugins, but I also just paste the list here, and see how it looks!
Mycroft uses a script to hide the direct access to the plugin. So you will have to fill in the number of the plugin (via Mouseover!) in the search option to see the actual script.

This paper presents a comparative evaluation of Google Scholar and 11 other bibliographic databases (Academic Search Elite, AgeLine, ArticleFirst, EconLit, GEOBASE, MEDLINE, PAIS International, POPLINE, Social Sciences Abstracts, Social Sciences Citation Index, and SocINDEX), focusing on search performance within the multidisciplinary field of later-life migration. The results of simple keyword searches are evaluated with reference to a set of 155 relevant articles identified in advance. In terms of both recall and precision, Google Scholar performs better than most of the subscription databases. This finding, based on a rigorous evaluation procedure, is contrary to the impressions of many early reviewers. The paper concludes with a discussion of a new approach to document relevance in educational settings—an approach that accounts for the instructors' goals as well as the students' assessments of relevance.

Update on OpenSearch Plugins for Licenced LIbrary Resources

Of course I know browser plugins are not big news. They have been around for a while now. It just did not pass my path before as a need-to-do priority in the work load I already have.

But suddenly you get the chance to make a great overview because somebody already did a load of work for library licenced databases & plugins. (Aaron Tay, a Librarian with NUS Libraries)
Then I attacked the subject as I normally do: jump in, head first, see what I understand. And figure out what I do not understand, by trial and error. For now this results in a short list of available library plugins.

I was surprised by the nice collection of the MyCroft Project, but just discovered yesterday they also offer a nice Plugin Create/Submit "wizard" This takes away having to understand all details and makes you a plugin that is hosted at their website.
That wizard also offers you to see what other plugins are made off by filling in the plugin number.

Just to make my own work easier, and eventually of course our patrons, I am working on a Resources Page for specific and general OpenSearch Plugins for direct use in the browser search box.

For licenced databases I am working on the url-string to include our digital library proxy access. Luckily I already have a huge list of library resource urls due to the Library Toolbars.

Search plugins allows you to do a direct search from your internet browser search box, without having to go to the database or search enigine first.
The MyCroft Project has been gathering all kinds of useful stuff at their site, including a search for OpenSearch Plugins. I could not resist in putting that into a handy widget via Widgetbox. You can also see it work on this Blog
It is not approved by Widgetbox yet, but it can be used as from now. And it it amazing to see how many Search Plugins there are out there!

What is Healthinfo Island?

Funded by the Greater Midwest Region of the National Network/National Library of Medicine (GMR NN/NLM) through a grant written by Lori Bell, of the Alliance Library System, Illinois, librarians at Healthinfo Island in Second Life explore the provision of consumer health information services in a virtual environment. The island is home to a consumer health library and a medical library, as well as virtual outposts or displays run by the National Library of Medicine's Special Information Services, contractors for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and our newest building, the Accessibility Center. This center houses another GMR NN/NLM funded projectwith the aim of encouraging awareness of vision, mobility, learning, and other disabilities. Zorg 2.0: the first congress for and by healthcare professionals

"The Acute Care Region East and the University Medical Centre UNC St Radboud are organising the first Care 2.0 Congress. It is to be a gathering with an interactive programme about the possibilities the Internet can hold for the care sector for and by healthcare professionals"

They do a great job at the Acute Care Region East. It seems they willingly decided to take this path of Web 2.0 integration in all Health Care aspects and this event is focussing on it.

PubMed Toolbar Screencast Part 1

This first part of the PubMed Toolbar Screencast explains the many options users have to adjust the Toolbar Settings to their own liking. Some options are:

shrink/unshrink toolbar. This leaves only the icons with mouse-over text and saves space
add gadgets (widgets): for business or pleasure
clear your search history
The Toolbar Options has 4 tabs with loads of settings:
Personal Components: email notifyer, privacy, weather, radio(podcasts)
Predefined Components: here you can choose which items of the toolbar you want to toggle on/off. If you do not like the News Ticker, just de-select it here.
Useful Components: Add your own apps buttons on the Toolbar for fast access: All Microsoft Office apps, Paint, MSN, Registry editor etc
Additional Settings: Very useful to set the functionality of the search box for search history, text selection, serch database preference etc.

Alliance Virtual Library honors Volunteers with Golden Leaf Awards

I received one too for the work (as Namro Orman) done in almost three year new for HealthInfoIsland together with Carol Perryman (aka Carolina Keats)! We achieved a lot. Worked on at least 4 Grant funded projects:

We also published a chapter in a book called Virtual Worlds, Real Libraries.

The Golden Leaf Award Night was spectacular, with cocktail party, limo-trip, red carpets, tv and speeches.

Here is some motivation as well: "

Almost three years ago, in April 2006, the Alliance Virtual Library(AVL), at that time the Second Life Library 2.0, opened in a small rented building on the mainland. Three years later, thanks to the work of hundreds of volunteers from all over the world, we are an archipelago of over 50 library, education, non-profit, and partner islands. We have live reference service with over 300 questions per week, collections and exhibits on a wide variety of topics, and programs, training sessions and book discussions for Second Life residents. In Second Life, three years is an eternity, so it speaks well of the volunteers who have built and sustained the AVL. "A Night with the Stars" on February 7 is to recognize and celebrate the numerous accomplishments of those involved with the AVL!

Saturday, February 7, from 5-7 pm, the Alliance Virtual Library Archipelago and RezLibris Magazine celebrate library and education achievements in the virtual world of Second Life during 2008! Award winners will receive the prestigious Golden Leaf award designed by Krull Aeon and enjoy music and dancing to the music of Gabrielle Riel of Riel Radio. The sparkling red carpet event will be held at the Crystal Ballroom at the Cinesphere, especially designed for this special event on Eduisland 4. RezLibris Second Life is many things, but ultimately it is about the cultivation of creativity expressed in multiple forms to attract, enchant, inform and educate its residents. The evidence of this is everywhere. The untold hours devoted to the AVL may go unrecognized. That is about to change. The "Golden Leaf" award has been established to honor unique and innovative applications of library sciences, education, and the partners who support these efforts. We hope the celebration will inspire another three years of work, progress and innovation at the AVL."

Zemanta has suggestions while you write inside your blogging dashboard! It tries to understand your text and recommends images, related links, tags and more. I am using Blogger to write my posts and setting up the Zemanta Firefox plugin was pretty easy. When having the Blogger dashboard open it presents a special window next to the concept post. The content of the post is being scanned and at least 5 things are happening automatically:

based on semantic search it offers to add links to parts of the text. I see many Wikipedia suggestions. I wonder if I can direct this anymore, i.e. with telling it to insert my Delicious links.
it presents suggestions for Tags & Labels. They can be included with one click. I do not see an option to add extra labels.
Pictures are shown the should relate to the text. They come from either from the web searched via an filter or from your own stuff from Flickr.
Your own stuff can be entered in the Preferences. With a max of 160 feeds via OPML or blogs can be added. This content is scanned to offer recent articles you bookmarked or others pulished in feeds you subscribe to. A simple click adds your selection to a special box "Related Articles" at the bottom of your post.
the Preferences also offer to add a button called "Reblog" or "Zemified". It's an easy way to offer readers to re-write your post for publishing or sharing.

New PubMed Search Interface: NOVO/SEEK

Very recently a new New PubMed/Medline Search Interface was launched: NOVO/SEEK

novo|seek is a search engine for biomedical literature in Medline that will help you to:

Retrieve meaningful documents related to your search.
Narrow your search to find the relevant scientific articles.
Identify the most relevant biomedial concepts to your query.

It is amazing! If offers a clear concept analysis with visual relevance indicators per concept! But not Mesh?I have to have a closer look soon, after I did read David Rothmans post about it, which is not visible at the moment
