Burned by the Lies

By now most people have hear the story of Bethany Storro from Washington state, that reported an acid assault against her by a non-existent offender. Bethany reported the assailant threw acid on he face when in fact she maimed herself.

News reports say doctors first noticed the burns were consistent of the acid being rubbed or applied rather than thrown. Watch the video and listen to the facts to see how many verbal and nonverbal red flags you discover even with the bandaged face. and i will post a few of my observations below.

Cant let what she did to me wreck my life

- shoulder shrug

"If we could catch that girl, oh that would be awesome."

- not a very strong statement of determination from a victim

- interesting that she make a "we" statement.

I can hear it sizziling could hear it bubbling

- However, she has seveare deafness

Doesnt nomally wear sunglasses

- Told an ellaborate story about the sunglasses
- Just bought them (wonder if this was true, a receipt would be nice)

- Stated she doesn't like sunglasses, but it was Jesus (using an unverifiable witness to vouch for her actions)

- but was even wearing them at night (assuming it was dark)

thats Jesus for sure, but shaking head no and shoulder shrug
Had a very good description of someone they never saw before while wearing sunglasses and had acid thrown in her face
If she is right hand dominant her gestures are primarily left handed here, this would be a hot spot too.

People are already coming out and saying he had no emotion and sounded insincere. Well this seems true, but there are a few hotspots “Red Flags” in his speech.

It is very clear that Tiger has one primary concern at the statement release, selling the speech to his Mom and probably looking to her for comfort. Yes the embracing hug at the end was wonderful, but is not the basis for this evaluation. If you notice, most of the time when he looks to his on lookers the only onlooker his eyes go to is Mom.

To say he has no emotion is not true. The first leakage occurred at about 16 seconds into the video when he states “many of you have cheered for me” and peaks at about 18 seconds when he makes eye contact with his Mom (one of his biggest fans). In fact, during the majority of his speech when he was looking at the onlookers he made eye contact with his Mom. He was likely looking for both comfort and approval from mom. Im not going to go into evaluating Mom. That stands on its own.

At 00:38 Tiger says he is deeply sorry. This emotion seems real, but yes concealed.Now at 00:38 to 00:48 for my selfish and irresponsible behavior, I engaged in.” his blink rate increases significantly, which is a hotspot for possible deception.

This is possibly a product of both him feeling truly sorry for disappointing many people, and as some would argue, the increased blink rate would indicate he did not deem his behavior as selfish.

The first minute is the most telling as he is under the most pressure. Once he was able to get the first “I’m sorry” out, he settles in and becomes more composed and relaxed as we expect from a fierce competitor like Tiger.

Either way, this is a speech that consisted of several hotspots. I do believe he is “truly sorry” for some things, but there are some that are likely a product of good speech writing and rehearsal.

Welcome to the Body Language Blog by Reading Lies.

My career is dependent on successfully reading the body language and detecting deception of people. The intent of this blog is to provide information to people who are interest in reading about body language and deception detection techniques. You may be a Sales Person, Judge, Therapist, Flight Attendant, Soccer Mom, or really anyone.

I am NOT Going to tell you you can learn to do this in 30 minutes. I am not going to tell you if you buy my books or videos you will be able to tell when anyone is lying to you, and be able to get the truth out of them. That is a LIE!

Paul Ekman of the Ekman Group, says there is a lot of bad information out there, he is right. It takes years to become proficient in reading body language and deception unless you are a "natural" (there have only been 50 scientifically proven to be). After all of this, you will still get it wrong occasionally. However, some will attempt to persuade you otherwise, don't fall prey to their deception.

A lover, a spouse, a best friend, a child, a coworker, a boss.... did they lie to me? I must know. Well, if you are trying to use this blog to figure that out, you have bigger issues than this blog can or will help with, you may want to go see Dr. Phil.
