You can relive the glory days of the Roman Empire once again with Starz’s “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena”, the mini-series that was created to flesh out the House of Batiatus, and at the same time tie fans over until Season 2 of “Spartacus” returns. Steven Craven and Nico Bradley head off on a road trip to Tijuana, but things take a strange turn on their tequila fueled getaway. A mysterious vagrant approaches them in a bar, giving them the infamous puzzle box and promising experiences beyond their wildest imaginations. Nico soon solves the box, but instead of breathtaking pleasure, he only encounters Pinhead; soon the duo vanishes with no evidence left behind but a blood splattered motel room, the box, and a video camera that affords the viewer a rare chance to see a Cenobite without a soul rending experience.

A year later, the Cravens and Bradleys gather for a memorial dinner, still trying to deal with the sudden loss of their sons and gain some closure in their shattered lives. Steven suddenly staggers into the party, traumatized and covered in someone else’s blood. While his arrival brings joy to the Cravens and a ray of hope for the Bradleys, the reality is not going to have a happy ending. The families soon find themselves trapped in their home, with a visitor who isn’t who he claims to be — and wishes to use them in a hellish bargain to save himself.

The improbable success of the film is largely thanks to special effects artist turned writer Gary Tunnicliffe and director Victor Garcia. The script could have easily transformed Gary Tunnicliffe, f/x wizard into Gary Tunnicliffe what the fuck were you thinking? But instead of a hackneyed effort, we’re given a competently written tale with a few twisty surprises to spice the proceedings up. Unlike previous sequels, which began as original scripts only to be shoehorned into the mythos, “Revelations” is written precisely to be a “Hellraiser” sequel that never strays from the established parameters of the earlier films. Victor Garcia, foster parent of “Mirrors 2″, briskly moves things along to their despairing conclusion. The film may run a brief 75 minutes, but it’s devoid of anything extraneous and has no problems quickly cutting to the bloody heart of the matter.

MIFFF Review: Midnight Son (2011)

Almost immediately director Scott Leberecht’s new horror film “Midnight Son” calls to mind George Romero’s 1976 movie “Martin”. Both are ostensibly vampire movies, but vampire movies that tweak the formula and refuse to follow conventions. Gone are the gothic, overdramatic affectations that have permeated the genre for years, and let’s put it this way, this vampire certainly doesn’t sparkle or glint like a diamond in the sun.
In fact, Jacob (Zak Kilberg) can’t go outside in the daytime at all. He has a skin condition that causes him to burn—literally burn, like lighter fluid and a match—when exposed to direct sunlight. His condition has led him to a sad, lonely, isolated life where he works nights as a security guard in a high-rise office building, and spends his days sequestered in his heavily curtained basement apartment painting portraits of a sunset he can never see.

As Jacob’s 25th birthday approaches he goes through a rapid series of physical changes. Out of nowhere an insatiable, all consuming hunger wracks his body. No matter how much food he crams down his throat his malnourished form screams at him. All that will satisfy these new cravings is blood. At first the leavings from the steak he cooks for dinner will fit the bill, then Styrofoam take-out containers procured from the local late-night butcher. But his hunger eventually leads him to more and more desperate measures, like dumpster diving in the biomedical waste receptacle behind a hospital. In the end only human blood will do. I have some friends who work in public health who would be shocked and appalled at the idea of drinking strange blood found in the garbage. They’d squirm in their seats and say something like, “Has this guy never heard of blood-born pathogens?”

Five Biggest Jaw-Droppers at the 2011 Emmys

Another year, another bunch of television shows honored—some for the first time, some for the umpteenth time.
What makes each Emmys telecast unique, however, are the little things, the special moments that have us applauding from our couches and the "wha-huh?!" moments that have us slapping our foreheads so collectively you can hear the thwack from Hollywood to Hoboken.
We combed through the best and the blah from the 63rd Primetime Emmys (which didn't live up to last year's energetic ride despite Jane Lynch's valiant hosting effort), here's what stood out in an eye-popping kind of way.

1. Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Finally Can't Lose: Could it be that Hugh Laurie and Jon Hamm are starting to look visibly pissed? Give us a second…we're just so darn pleased…Friday Night Lights star Kyle Chandler upset Hamm, Laurie and this year's Golden Globe winner, Steve Buscemi, to win the Emmy for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, the honor he's deserved from the second he slipped on shorts and looked sternly yet protectively at the Dillon Panthers. (Or, and this is where the win comes in, the East Dillon Lions.) The only shame is that FNL never won State (that's Outstanding Drama Series, in Texas-football speak), but we have a feeling that Chandler has no problem taking one for the team.
2. Has the World Gone Mad?!: Just call him President Don Draper: With its latest Outstanding Drama win, Mad Men ties The West Wing, which dominated the category from 2000 to 2003. We get it, Mad Men is an extremely well-done show. We're big fans. But, has it really been the best hour of drama on TV for four straight years? Better than Dexter at its funny creepiest, The Good Wife on a good night, or Walking Dead and Boardwalk Empire for the duration of their premiere seasons? Yeah, weren't the Golden Globe- and SAG-winning bootleggers from Atlantic City supposed to unseat those suit-wearing stiffs from Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce? We were sure that sipping scotch out in the open was passé and that Prohibition was in. Good gracious, we could use a drink and a Lucky Strike...

3. No Longer a Bridesmaid: Melissa McCarthy, the non-tiger-blood-drinking star of Chuck Lorre's newest hit, Mike & Molly, enjoyed her first Emmy win for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. Actually, despite not being able to prevent Charlie Sheen from taking the stage, Lorre had a pretty great night, what with The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons repeating for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series (and sending Steve Carell off into Movie Land with no Emmys) and Sheen tamely wishing his former Two and Half Men colleagues nothing but success this season. And there's always the satisfaction of knowing that Sheen had no choice but to toe the line if he ever expects to eat lunch in this town (at the big-boy table, anyway) again.
4. Knight of Badassdom: Woot-woot! Tyrion Lanister won an Emmy! Well, not the George R.R. Martin character himself, but the much-desreving Peter Dinklage, for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. And considering Emmy has pretty much ignored True Blood (and nominated and then ignored The Walking Dead), it's nice to know there's a wee spot of glory reserved for excellent work done in the not-very-realistic realm. And this year, the supporting categories were kind to the conflicted. Margo Martindale was the surprise winner for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as the quietly murderous matriarch of a family of drug dealers on Justified.

Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack and Tonto

With the release of the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie just around the corner, Johnny Depp has been doing the promotional rounds. Find out more about his in-depth involvement in the project and his thoughts on The Lone Ranger, specifically his character, Tonto.

The team behind Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides a press conference, which io9 sat in on. Taking things back to basics the conference began with a discussion about the script and the writing process. Director Rob Marshall revealed it was “Depp’s idea to bring the Spanish faction into the movie as a counterpoint to Ponce de Leon's original expedition to the Fountain of Youth.” Producer Jerry Bruckheimer credited Depp with the creation of Sam Claflin’s missionary character and co-star Geoffrey Rush added that if it wasn’t for Depp’s insistence his character, Barbossa, wouldn’t have returned as Jack Sparrow’s ally.
Retrurning to director Marshall, he admitted that this is by no means his usual directing gig but he found his experience with musicals (Chicago, Nine) helped him with the action/adventure genre, comparing the action sequences to musical choreography. Whether or not fans of the original Pirates trilogy will find that encouraging is hard to tell.
After four movies playing the rogue that is Captain Jack Sparrow, will Johnny Depp ever have enough of acting the pirate? He admits himself that he’s rather attached and joked that “the character now shows up at unexpected times, including earlier that morning when he was getting his kids ready for school.” He went on to say he feels the possibilities are endless and he’ll never have enough of him. Bruckheimer backed up the notion of more from Depp’s Jack by confirming they have received the first rough script for the sequel. Make sure you hang around after the credits of On Stranger Tides to get a hint as to what might happen next.

While Depp is happy to go full steam ahead with many more adventures of Captain Jack, his relationship with former Pirates director Gore Verbinski continues to go from strength to strength. Not only do they have Rango as part of their shared work but the upcoming adaptation of The Lone Ranger will soon be added to that list. Nonetheless, this might not be quite the Lone Ranger you were expecting.
Depp spoke to EW about the project, reminiscing about watching the 1949-1957 TV show: “I remember watching it as a kid, with Jay Silverheels and Clayton Moore, and going: ‘Why is the f—ing Lone Ranger telling Tonto what to do?’ … I liked Tonto, even at that tender age, and knew Tonto was getting the unpleasant end of the stick here. That’s stuck with me. And when the idea came up [for the movie], I started thinking about Tonto and what could be done in my own small way try to — ‘eliminate’ isn’t possible — but reinvent the relationship, to attempt to take some of the ugliness thrown on the Native Americans, not only in The Lone Ranger, but the way Indians were treated throughout history of cinema, and turn it on its head.”
Does that mean we’ll see a little respect for the sidekick, or perhaps equality? Depp’s desire for wanting more for the Tonto character derives from the understanding that he has Native American in his blood: “My great grandmother was quite a bit of Native American, she grew up Cherokee or maybe Creek Indian.”
