TCS to hire 25,000 persons from campuses next year

MUMBAI: Tata Consultancy ServicesBSE -1.14 %(TCS) today said it plans to hire 25,000 persons from campuses in the next fiscal.

"Campus recruitments, yes, we've already started and we've started from seventh semester as what we've discussed with Nasscom. As far as next year is concerned, we will be doing at least 25,000, that is what is our target at this point of time is," TCSBSE -1.14 % Executive Vice President and Global Head (Human Resources) Ajoy Mukherjee told reporters here.

He added that about 12,000 offers have already been made. With fresh graduates continuing to join the company, there was a total gross addition of 18,654 people during the July-September 2012 quarter. The net addition stood at 10,531 people during Q2, taking the total employee strength to 2,54,076 on a consolidated basis at the end of September 30, 2012.

TCS plans to add about 50,000 employees during FY'13. Of the total gross additions, fresh graduates accounted for 69 per cent in India. The utilisation rate (excluding trainees) was at 81.6 per cent and including trainees at 72.8 per cent.

The attrition rate (last 12 months (LTM) basis) was at 11.4 per cent overall, including IT and BPO. "We are delighted to have increased our retention rate further to 88.6 per cent. We have also been able to increase our utilisation rate, including trainees, despite adding over 10,000 fresh graduates during the quarter," Mukherjee said.

TCS added 41 clients during the quarter, helping the company post 49.2 per cent jump in consolidated net profit at Rs 3,434 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2012.

The USD 100 billion Indian IT outsourcing industry, which earns close to 80 per cent of its revenues from the US and Europe, has been facing difficult business environment as IT budgets of clients remain flat. Fierce competition and rise in operational costs has also added to the impact.

However, TCS CEO and MD N Chandrasekaran exuded confidence in continuing the growth momentum. "We are pretty confident on margins and positive on growth," he said adding that discretionary spends by clients continues.

Microsoft launches new logo after 25 years

Microsoft will use a new logo for the first time in over two and a half decades. The software titan has created a new logo which has been heavily inspired by the emblem of Windows operating system. This change in the logo also shows the company's focus on the tile-centric Metro interface, which it uses in the Windows Phone platform, XBOX 360 and the upcomingWindows 8 and Office suite.

On the Microsoft Blog on TechNet, Jeff Hansen, the general manager of brand strategy at the company, said that this step will ensure that a consistent user experience can be delivered across all platforms, from PCs and phones to tablets and television.

Rather than the previous emblem, which only had the name of the company, this new logo has 'Microsoft' written in Segoe font on the right and square with four tiles, reminiscent of the Metro UI, on the left.

The new Microsoft logo is already on the company website and in retail stores in Boston, Seattle and Bellevue. It will be seen heavily in advertisements as well as intra-organisation communications.

More than 60 percent of South Koreans now have smartphones despite their belated debut in the country, according to the latest industry figures.

Data from three mobile providers quoted by Yonhap news agency showed the number reached 30.03 million on Monday, out of a total of 52.55 million mobile phone users.

The tech-savvy nation has more mobile phones than people. The population hit 50 million in June.

South Koreans fell in love with smartphones relatively late compared to some other countries. Regulators approved Apple's iPhone only in September 2009 because of privacy concerns about some of its features.

Since then, the use of smartphones has been growing at a brisk pace, with free wireless networks and cutting-edge gadgets widely available.

South Korea is one of the world's most wired societies, with 95 percent of homes using broadband internet. It also has the world's top internet download speeds, according to a study by Pando Networks.

Unable to block 28 accounts, technical difficulties: Twitter to Govt

New Delhi: Twitter has told the government that it needs more time to block 28 accounts, which have allegedly tweeted communally sensitive or inflammatory remarks and photos.

The micro-blogging site has written to the Department of Information and Technology to state that it's having technical difficulties in disabling these accounts.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has warned of serious consequences if its orders are not followed. Twitter has around 16 million accounts in India

Earlier this month, doctored photos and videos were circulated to falsely depict atrocities against Muslims in Myanmar and Assam. Images of people who died in natural disasters like earthquakes were represented as victims of ethnic violence. The campaign urged reprisal. Text messages sent to migrants from the North East in cities like Bangalore and Pune saw thousands of people boarding special trains to their homes and families.

Twitter has also been asked to block six accounts that masquerade as the official account of the Prime Minister's Office.

"Twitter has agreed to block the six fake PM accounts. They responded to our complaint saying we need to follow an internal channel to lodge a formal complaint in the matter," the prime minister's communications adviser, Pankaj Pachauri, told IANS.

"We have forwarded their communication to the ministry of communications and IT for necessary action," Mr Pachauri said. "We had earlier complained through email to the six fake twitter accounts individually," he added.

In January this year, Twitter had announced its ability to block content in a country but making it available in other parts of the world. It had also stressed that "if and when we are required to withhold a tweet in a specific country, we will attempt to let the user know, and we will clearly mark when the content has been withheld."

Internet giants like Facebook and Google have been fighting criminal and civil charges in Delhi courts where they have been accused of allowing content that provokes communal hatred. The government has said that often, social networking sites are too slow to respond to requests asking for offensive material to be deleted.

SMS limit increased from 5 to 20 per day with immediate effect

New Delhi: The government today increased the SMS limit per day from five to 20 with immediate effect.

Mobile users were restricted to sending only 5 SMS-es per day from last Saturday to check spread of rumours, which fuelled panic among people from the North-East.

"We have banned bulk SMS-es and MMS-es for 15 days," Union Home Secretary RK Singh had said last week.

According to the government, since the clashes in Assam, misleading information and hate messages were being spread through SMS-es and MMS-es that led to panic among the people from the North-East. Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter were also reportedly used to circulate morphed images.

Along with the restrictions on SMSes and MMS-es, hundreds of web pages have been banned by the government since last week.

HYDERABAD: Cheteshwar Pujara, brought in as a replacement for Rahul Dravid, struck his maiden Test century to put India in command on the opening day of the first Test against New Zealand on Thursday.

Pujara's unbeaten 119 took the hosts to 307 for five at the close after winning the toss. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (29) was the other not-out batsman.

Batting in the number three spot vacated by the recently-retired Dravid, the 24-year-old Pujara displayed a cool temperament akin to his predecessor as he came in for his fourth Test match and his first since January 2011.

He hit 15 fours and a six during his 226-ball stay and added 125 for the fourth wicket with Virat Kohli (58) to help India overcome the loss of Gautam Gambhir (22), Virender Sehwag (47) andSachin Tendulkar (19).

Pujara, who survived a close caught-behind call towards the end of the day, also shared an unbroken 47-run stand for the sixth wicket with Dhoni after the team lost Kohli and Suresh Raina (three) in quick succession.

India, beaten in eight consecutive away tests in England and Australia last year, lost Gambhir and Sehwag in the morning session and batting great Tendulkar after lunch.

Tendulkar hit two boundaries before he was clean bowled by left-armer Trent Boult.

Bracewell finally got rid of the dangerous Sehwag when his attempted cut was snapped up by Martin Guptill at second slip.

New Zealand went on to spoil more chances later in the day.

Mohammed Ashraf Gondal, vice chairman, Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Pakistan, told us, "The final decision was that the film cannot be screened in Pakistan." His wife Farzana Gondal, also part of the CBFC, said, "Kuch logon ko film bahut achhi lagi, lekin senior officials felt that it can't be screened here."
