MAKE was backstage to create the look for Daniel Vosovic’s Autum/Winter 2013 presentation this week in New York City. Led by Kristin Hilton, MAKE’s team of artists created a contemporary look that spoke to Daniel’s inspiration which referenced modern aristocracy – a polished girl with a playful side. A bold, statement lip was the focus of the look which was offset by the regal, porcelain-like skin.

SKIN:

Step 1: Kristin began by removing excess makeup with MAKE’s Makeup Remover Wipes

Alila 'Indian Fig Finishing Cream' a matte finish for a humid climate

I first tried the Indian Fig Finishing Cream from Alila Hotels and Resorts while in Hong Kong; this is a moisture treatment with a difference as if has a true matte finish. At first this is an unusual texture to apply, most if not all moisture creams have a “slip” factor so that spreading the cream over the skin is relatively easy. I could see that the Indian Fig Cream did to a certain extent "slip” across the skin, but not to the greasy extent that many other creams do.

However I really did appreciate that this treatment cream just absorbed immediately into the skin leaving a matte finish, afterwards applying a sun protection or makeup over this treatment cream actually resulted in the makeup lasting longer in a humid climate. My understanding are that certain chemicals are added to a cream give the “slip,” chemicals that often have no skin enhancing value.

Alila Living products advised that all their products are organic and natural with no chemical ingredients and the matte feeling was the combination of all the natural substances. The designs of Dries van Noten have always made me think of those Nordic interiors, where baroque furniture and modern paintings, or other unexpected combinations, naturally come together. In this part of the world the clean style of each decor and the cool local light allow every element to fully express themselves. Dries Van Noten’s world also shares with these very particular atmospheres a sense of comfort, never sacrificing to the idea of “style at any price,” and never giving way to ostentation.

This aesthetic - composed of very diverse elements put side by side - and this sense of well-being are very close to the way I see my profession. As soon as we decided to work together, my mission was to translate Dries Van Noten’s world into a scent, all the while avoiding to simply translate a few individual elements of that rich alchemy into a scent, as Dries Van Noten’s planet is too complex to be pinned down that way.

My first move was to ask Bruno Jovanovic to work on this project, as he is a great listener, his perfume technique allows him to master any subject, and he has a taste for warm scents that seemed adapted to my perception of Dries’ desire. Then I tried to make Bruno understand the essence of Dries’ world. I spoke about the different themes and recurrent materials that Dries often uses: Indian embroidery, XVIIIth century engravings, or the very graphic and colorful prints that he juxtaposes to create unexpected harmony - just like a perfumer does.

I also told Bruno about the sober warmth of Flemish people - the world that Dries comes from - the softness of their cuisine and specifically of their desserts like waffles, speculoos biscuits or sugar tarts. I insisted that the sum of these elements generates the unique atmosphere that we needed to convey. This is how Bruno came up with the idea of creating a perfume built around natural sandalwood, which he chose for its softness and its character, and the fact that it is simultaneously exotic and evocative of the tradition of “great classic perfumes.”

To the milky smell of Santal Mysore he added the vanilla sweetness of Flemish pastries with a hint of vanilla, sacrasol (sulfurol) and Peruvian balm. This monumental warmth is tempered by a large dose of jasmine absolute and a musk accord. A trace of saffron and patchouli gives this ensemble, already very distinct, a unique - almost leathery - vibration. An overdose of lemon and bergamot offers a boost to this particularly contemporary structure and gives it the timeless aspect of the great perfumes of the beginning of the XXth century.

This very short formula, composed of very precious materials, generates a sober but distinct sensuality. It is, in my eyes, a fair parallel to Dries van Noten’s world.

Eylure knows more about lashes than anyone, they have taken women through the changing decades and are still here with us. They create and collaborate with celebrities to bring all lash lovers up to the minute trends for any season and Spring 2013 is no exception. Eylure celebrity makeup artist Elle Leary, gave her personal recommendations.

"The trends we are seeing for Spring are long, separated lashes. The lashes still remain natural, but have that dramatic edge to them. For example our Eylure Naturalites #116 or #080. Some of my favorite drama lashes are our double lash #205 & #202. These can be worn alone with just a flick liner or with the legendary smokey eye!! These styles are called double lashes because they are two sets of lashes in one band."

ELLE LEARY

Elle went on to desribe the Double Lash, " Eylure is the innovator of the Double Lash, which is a style that every makeup artist uses. They are still very flexible and wearable. Are they heavy, you ask? Actually they are very light because of the delicate band and the 100% natural hair. A couple other lashes in this same style are the Naturalites Intense #148 & #147. These are a little less dramatic, but really give you the punch you need for a night out. These lashes will make your eyes look wider and more youthful."

her tips for women wearing lashes are, "Women can be a little intimated by dramatic false lashes, so you have to wear them with confidence! It's like slipping into that perfect little black dress and strutting out because you feel great. Dramatic lashes do that same thing."

So If you've never worn lashes before, Elle recommends that you start with lashes that she likes to call "Drama Queen in the Making", Eylure Evening #107 or #101 these will introduce you to a little pop, without being too over powering. "My last tip is to make sure you cut each lash to your proper eye length. This way the lash will fit perfect on your lid and enhance your look, and not stand out in a strange way".

Do's and Don'ts, "My DO's for false lashes are: wear lashes for the right time of day or occasion. So if you are going to work or a day event, try using something like Eylure's Natural Volume line. Application tips:

1) Lift the lashes from the tray with Tweezers, applicator or your fingers (if they are glued across the lash, then ease them away from the half-moon using your thumbs in a downward motion, please do not pick off from the ends).

2) Measure against your eye and if they are too long then, using sharp nail scissors, snip off a small section at a time until they are perfect.

3) Apply a thin line of the Eylure Lashfix glue to the lash band. Definitely wait about 20-30 seconds until it becomes tacky before applying (this is where most applications can go awry).

4) Apply with tweezers, applicator or your fingers (which ever feels natural to you) we believe a tweezers/applicator will give you a more precise placement. Place from the middle of the eye first then adjust the edges so they follow your natural lash line. Press and hold for a few seconds. If you make a mistake, simply remove from the eye, take off the dried glue, reapply and go again.
