Deep in the forests of Cambodia’s Siem Reap province, the elegant spires of an ancient stone city soar skyward above the sprawling complex of Angkor Archaeological Park.

The Khmer Empire’s various capitals thrived here from the 9th to 15th centuries, while their rulers presided over an empire that stretched from Myanmar (Burma) to Vietnam. Including forested areas and newly discovered “suburbs” Angkor covers more than 400 square miles (1,000 square kilometers)—an area considerably larger than New York City’s five boroughs.

Though just one of hundreds of surviving temples and structures, the massive Angkor Wat is the most famed of all Cambodia’s temples—it appears on the nation’s flag—and it is revered for good reason. The 12th century “temple-mountain” was built as a spiritual home for the Hindu god Vishnu. The temple is an architectural triumph laden with artistic treasures like the bas-relief galleries that line many walls and tell enduring tales of Cambodian history and legend.

In other parts of Angkor such art depicts scenes of daily life—offering scholars a precious window into the past.

One tale Angkor’s artists and scribes did not tell, however, is why the city’s rulers abandoned the site and resettled near modern Phnom Penh. Theories include defeats in battle and shifting religious observances, (because the Khmer’s Hinduism was gradually replaced by Theravada Buddhism during the 13th and 14th centuries), but the mystery has puzzled scientists for centuries.

Angkor is as much about water as it is about stone—the site boasts an enormous system of artificial canals, dikes, and reservoirs, the largest of which (West Baray) is 5 miles (8 kilometers) long and 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) wide. These incredible feats of engineering form an integral part of an overall site design that remains faithful to religious symbolism. Moats, for example, simulate the oceans surrounding Mount Meru, the home of Hindu gods.

But these massive works also served a practical purpose by skillfully harnessing river and rainwater to quench the thirst of some 750,000 residents in the world’s largest preindustrial city. That water also irrigated wealth-producing crops like rice, which served the Khmer as currency.

Some scholars speculate that the downfall of this elaborate water system led to the end of Angkor. A series of weak monsoons and/or the collapse of the water works due to environmental issues, like deforestation, which drove destructive floods and choked the system with sediment, might have tipped the movement of power toward Phnom Penh.

Even after its glory days had passed, Angkor remained popular with Buddhist pilgrims who journeyed from across Southeast Asia and beyond. Today the site also draws secular travelers—almost a million a year.

When Angkor was named a World Heritage site in 1992 it was also added to the List of World Heritage in Danger; the incomparable site was threatened by pillaging, plagued by illegal excavations, and even dotted with land mines. In 1993 UNESCO launched a major campaign to restore and safeguard Angkor. Thanks to a textbook case of international cooperation Angkor rebounded so dramatically that it was removed from the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2004.

UNESCO continues to be a part of Angkor’s future, working with the Cambodian authorities to ensure that tourism access and development do not compromise this great cultural treasure.

How to Get There

The nearby town of Siem Reap can be reached via good roads from Phnom Penh and buses and taxis make the trip regularly. Those preferring to travel by boat can also make the trip from Phnom Penh in some five or six hours—about the same travel time as by road. The airport in Siem Reap has service to Phnom Penh and regular flights abroad to Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and Laos.

How to Visit

The fast-growing town of Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor and is filled with lodging, dining, and tour-package options for all budgets and inclinations. Tour buses are available for those whose itineraries match what’s on offer—typically visits to Angkor’s major sites. Those interested in exploring more remote and off-the-beaten-track structures may hire cars or motorbikes with drivers and/or guides who are also able to suggest itineraries. Tethered balloon rides offer a unique aerial perspective from which to view the grand design of the Angkor complex.

When to Visit

Peak tourist season in Angkor is December and January, when rainfall is less likely and the climate is most kind. Temperatures can soar in spring and typically peak in April before the May/June monsoon season. Travel during the monsoon can be uncomfortable. The post-monsoon rainy season continues until October, but rains are sporadic and shouldn’t deter well-prepared visitors, though some remote roads can wash out late in the rainy season.

Hydroponics is a subset of hydro culture and is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil. Terrestrial plants may be grown with their roots in the mineral nutrient solution only or in an inert medium, such as perlite, gravel,biochar, mineral wool, expanded clay pebbles or coconut husk.

Researchers discovered in the 18th century that plants absorb essential mineral nutrients as inorganic ions in water. In natural conditions, soil acts as a mineral nutrient reservoir but the soil itself is not essential to plant growth. When the mineral nutrients in the soil dissolve in water, plant roots are able to absorb them. When the required mineral nutrients are introduced into a plant's water supply artificially, soil is no longer required for the plant to thrive. Almost any terrestrial plant will grow with hydroponics. Hydroponics is also a standard technique in biology research and teaching.

History

The earliest published work on growing terrestrial plants without soil was the 1627 book Sylva Sylvarum by Francis Bacon, printed a year after his death. Water culture became a popular research technique after that. In 1699, John Woodward published his water culture experiments with spearmint. He found that plants in less-pure water sources grew better than plants in distilled water. By 1842, a list of nine elements believed to be essential to plant growth had been compiled, and the discoveries of the German botanists Julius von Sachs and Wilhelm Knop, in the years 1859-65, resulted in a development of the technique of soilless cultivation.^[1] Growth of terrestrial plants without soil in mineral nutrient solutions was called solution culture. It quickly became a standard research and teaching technique and is still widely used today. Solution culture is now considered a type of hydroponics where there is no inert medium.

In 1929, William Frederick Gericke of the University of California at Berkeley began publicly promoting that solution culture be used for agricultural crop production.^[2]^[3] He first termed it aquaculture but later found that aquaculture was already applied to culture of aquatic organisms. Gericke created a sensation by growing tomato vines twenty-five feet high in his back yard in mineral nutrient solutions rather than soil.^[4] By analogy with the ancient Greek term for agriculture, γεωπονικά,^[5] the science of cultivating the earth, Gericke coined the term hydroponics in 1937 (although he asserts that the term was suggested by W. A. Setchell, of the University of California) for the culture of plants in water (from Ancient Greek ὕδωρ, water,^[5] and πόνος, labour ^[5]).^[1]

Reports of Gericke's work and his claims that hydroponics would revolutionize plant agriculture prompted a huge number of requests for further information. Gericke had been denied use of the University's greenhouses for his experiments due to the administration's skepticism, and when the University tried to compel him to release his preliminary nutrient recipes developed at home he requested greenhouse space and time to improve them using appropriate research facilities. While he was eventually provided greenhouse space, the University assigned Hoagland and Arnon to re-develop Gericke's formula and show it held no benefit over soil grown plant yields, a view held by Hoagland. In 1940, he published the book, Complete Guide to Soilless Gardening, after leaving his academic position in a climate that was politically unfavorable.

Two other plant nutritionists at the University of California were asked to research Gericke's claims. Dennis R. Hoagland^[6] and Daniel I. Arnon^[7] wrote a classic 1938 agricultural bulletin, The Water Culture Method for Growing Plants Without Soil,.^[8] Hoagland and Arnon claimed that hydroponic crop yields were no better than crop yields with good-quality soils. Crop yields were ultimately limited by factors other than mineral nutrients, especially light. This research, however, overlooked the fact that hydroponics has other advantages including the fact that the roots of the plant have constant access to oxygen and that the plants have access to as much or as little water as they need. This is important as one of the most common errors when growing is over- and under- watering; and hydroponics prevents this from occurring as large amounts of water can be made available to the plant and any water not used, drained away, recirculated, or actively aerated, eliminating anoxic conditions, which drown root systems in soil. In soil, a grower needs to be very experienced to know exactly how much water to feed the plant. Too much and the plant will not be able to access oxygen; too little and the plant will lose the ability to transport nutrients, which are typically moved into the roots while in solution. These two researchers developed several formulas for mineral nutrient solutions, known asHoagland solution. Modified Hoagland solutions are still used today.

One of the earliest successes of hydroponics occurred on Wake Island, a rocky atoll in the Pacific Ocean used as a refuelling stop for Pan American Airlines. Hydroponics was used there in the 1930s to grow vegetables for the passengers. Hydroponics was a necessity on Wake Island because there was no soil, and it was prohibitively expensive to airlift in fresh vegetables.

In the 1960s, Allen Cooper of England developed the Nutrient film technique. The Land Pavilion at Walt Disney World's EPCOT Center opened in 1982 and prominently features a variety of hydroponic techniques. In recent decades, NASA has done extensive hydroponic research for their Controlled Ecological Life Support System or CELSS. Hydroponics intended to take place on Mars are using LED lighting to grow in different color spectrum with much less heat.

Origin

Soilless culture

Gericke originally defined hydroponics as crop growth in mineral nutrient solutions. Hydroponics is a subset of soilless culture. Many types of soilless culture do not use the mineral nutrient solutions required for hydroponics.

Plants that are not traditionally grown in a climate would be possible to grow using a controlled environment system like hydroponics. NASA has also looked to utilize hydroponics in the space program. Ray Wheeler, plant physiologist at Kennedy Space Center’s Space Life Science Lab, believes that hydroponics will create advances within space travel. He terms this as a bioregenerative life support system.^[9]

Advantages

Some of the reasons why hydroponics is being adapted around the world for food production are the following:

No soil is needed for hydroponics.
The water stays in the system and can be reused - thus, a lower water requirement.
It is possible to control the nutrition levels in their entirety - thus, lower nutrition requirements.
No nutrition pollution is released into the environment because of the controlled system.
Stable and high yields.
Pests and diseases are easier to get rid of than in soil because of the container's mobility.
Ease of harvesting.
No pesticide damage.

Today, hydroponics is an established branch of horticulture. Progress has been rapid, and results obtained in various countries have proved it to be thoroughly practical and to have very definite advantages over conventional methods of horticulture.

There are two chief merits of the soil-less cultivation of plants. First, hydroponics may potentially produce much higher crop yields. Also, hydroponics can be used in places where in-ground agriculture or gardening are not possible.

Disadvantages

Without soil as a buffer, any failure to the hydroponic system leads to rapid plant death. Other disadvantages include pathogen attacks such as damp-off due to Verticillium wiltcaused by the high moisture levels associated with hydroponics and over watering of soil based plants. Also, many hydroponic plants require different fertilizers and containment systems.^[10]

Techniques

The two main types of hydroponics are solution culture and medium culture. Solution culture does not use a solid medium for the roots, just the nutrient solution. The three main types of solution cultures are static solution culture, continuous-flow solution culture and aeroponics. The medium culture method has a solid medium for the roots and is named for the type of medium, e.g., sand culture, gravel culture, or rockwool culture.

There are two main variations for each medium, sub-irrigation and top irrigation^[specify]. For all techniques, most hydroponic reservoirs are now built of plastic, but other materials have been used including concrete, glass, metal, vegetable solids, and wood. The containers should exclude light to prevent algae growth in the nutrient solution.

Static solution culture

In static solution culture, plants are grown in containers of nutrient solution, such as glass Mason jars (typically, in-home applications), plastic buckets, tubs, or tanks. The solution is usually gently aerated but may be un-aerated. If un-aerated, the solution level is kept low enough that enough roots are above the solution so they get adequate oxygen. A hole is cut in the lid of the reservoir for each plant. There can be one to many plants per reservoir. Reservoir size can be increased as plant size increases. A home made system can be constructed from plastic food containers or glass canning jars with aeration provided by an aquarium pump, aquarium airline tubing and aquarium valves. Clear containers are covered with aluminium foil, butcher paper, black plastic, or other material to exclude light, thus helping to eliminate the formation of algae. The nutrient solution is changed either on a schedule, such as once per week, or when the concentration drops below a certain level as determined with an electrical conductivity meter. Whenever the solution is depleted below a certain level, either water or fresh nutrient solution is added, A Mariotte's bottle, or a float valve, can be used to automatically maintain the solution level. In raft solution culture, plants are placed in a sheet of buoyant plastic that is floated on the surface of the nutrient solution. That way, the solution level never drops below the roots.

Continuous-flow solution culture

In continuous-flow solution culture, the nutrient solution constantly flows past the roots. It is much easier to automate than the static solution culture because sampling and adjustments to the temperature and nutrient concentrations can be made in a large storage tank that has potential to serve thousands of plants. A popular variation is the nutrient film technique or NFT, whereby a very shallow stream of water containing all the dissolved nutrients required for plant growth is recirculated past the bare roots of plants in a watertight thick root mat, which develops in the bottom of the channel and has an upper surface that, although moist, is in the air. Subsequent to this, an abundant supply of oxygen is provided to the roots of the plants. A properly designed NFT system is based on using the right channel slope, the right flow rate, and the right channel length. The main advantage of the NFT system over other forms of hydroponics is that the plant roots are exposed to adequate supplies of water, oxygen, and nutrients. In all other forms of production, there is a conflict between the supply of these requirements, since excessive or deficient amounts of one results in an imbalance of one or both of the others. NFT, because of its design, provides a system where all three requirements for healthy plant growth can be met at the same time, provided that the simple concept of NFT is always remembered and practised. The result of these advantages is that higher yields of high-quality produce are obtained over an extended period of cropping. A downside of NFT is that it has very little buffering against interruptions in the flow, e.g., power outages. But, overall, it is probably one of the more productive techniques.

The same design characteristics apply to all conventional NFT systems. While slopes along channels of 1:100 have been recommended, in practice it is difficult to build a base for channels that is sufficiently true to enable nutrient films to flow without ponding in locally depressed areas. As a consequence, it is recommended that slopes of 1:30 to 1:40 are used. This allows for minor irregularities in the surface, but, even with these slopes, ponding and water logging may occur. The slope may be provided by the floor, or benches or racks may hold the channels and provide the required slope. Both methods are used and depend on local requirements, often determined by the site and crop requirements.

As a general guide, flow rates for each gully should be 1 liter per minute. At planting, rates may be half this and the upper limit of 2 L/min appears about the maximum. Flow rates beyond these extremes are often associated with nutritional problems. Depressed growth rates of many crops have been observed when channels exceed 12 metres in length. On rapidly growing crops, tests have indicated that, while oxygen levels remain adequate, nitrogen may be depleted over the length of the gully. As a consequence, channel length should not exceed 10–15 metres. In situations where this is not possible, the reductions in growth can be eliminated by placing another nutrient feed halfway along the gully and reducing flow rates to 1 L/min through each outlet.

Aeroponics

Aeroponics is a system wherein roots are continuously or discontinuously kept in an environment saturated with fine drops (a mist or aerosol) of nutrient solution. The method requires no substrate and entails growing plants with their roots suspended in a deep air or growth chamber with the roots periodically wetted with a fine mist of atomized nutrients. Excellent aeration is the main advantage of aeroponics.

Aeroponic techniques have proven to be commercially successful for propagation, seed germination, seed potato production, tomato production, leaf crops, and micro-greens.^[11]Since inventor Richard Stoner commercialized aeroponic technology in 1983, aeroponics has been implemented as an alternative to water intensive hydroponic systems worldwide.^[12] The limitation of hydroponics is the fact that 1 kg of water can only hold 8 mg of air, no matter whether aerators are utilized or not.

Another distinct advantage of aeroponics over hydroponics is that any species of plants can be grown in a true aeroponic system because the micro environment of an aeroponic can be finely controlled. The limitation of hydroponics is that only certain species of plants can survive for so long in water before they become waterlogged. The advantage of aeroponics is that suspended aeroponic plants receive 100% of the available oxygen and carbon dioxide to the roots zone, stems, and leaves,^[13] thus accelerating biomass growth and reducing rooting times. NASA research has shown that aeroponically grown plants have an 80% increase in dry weight biomass (essential minerals) compared to hydroponically grown plants. Aeroponics used 65% less water than hydroponics. NASA also concluded that aeroponically grown plants requires ¼ the nutrient input compared to hydroponics. Unlike hydroponically grown plants, aeroponically grown plants will not suffer transplant shock when transplanted to soil, and offers growers the ability to reduce the spread of disease and pathogens. Aeroponics is also widely used in laboratory studies of plant physiology and plant pathology. Aeroponic techniques have been given special attention from NASA since a mist is easier to handle than a liquid in a zero gravity environment.

Passive sub-irrigation

Passive sub-irrigation, also known as passive hydroponics or semi-hydroponics, is a method wherein plants are grown in an inert porous medium that transports water and fertilizer to the roots by capillary action from a separate reservoir as necessary, reducing labour and providing a constant supply of water to the roots. In the simplest method, the pot sits in a shallow solution of fertilizer and water or on a capillary mat saturated with nutrient solution. The various hydroponic media available, such as expanded clay and coconut husk, contain more air space than more traditional potting mixes, delivering increased oxygen to the roots, which is important in epiphytic plants such as orchids and bromeliads, whose roots are exposed to the air in nature. Additional advantages of passive hydroponics are the reduction of root rot and the additional ambient humidity provided through evaporations.

Ebb and flow or flood and drain sub-irrigation

In its simplest form, there is a tray above a reservoir of nutrient solution. Either the tray is filled with growing medium (clay granules being the most common) and planted directly or pots of medium stand in the tray. At regular intervals, a simple timer causes a pump to fill the upper tray with nutrient solution, after which the solution drains back down into the reservoir. This keeps the medium regularly flushed with nutrients and air. Once the upper tray fills past the drain stop, it begins recirculating the water until the timer turns the pump off, and the water in the upper tray drains back into the reservoirs.^[14]

Run to waste

In a run to waste system, nutrient and water solution is periodically applied to the medium surface. This may be done in its simplest form, by manually applying a nutrient-and-water solution one or more times per day in a container of inert growing media, such as rockwool, perlite, vermiculite, coco fibre, or sand. In a slightly more complex system, it is automated with a delivery pump, a timer and irrigation tubing to deliver nutrient solution with a delivery frequency that is governed by the key parameters of plant size, plant growing stage, climate, substrate, and substrate conductivity, pH, and water content.

In a commercial setting, watering frequency is multi factorial and governed by computers or PLCs.

Commercial hydroponics production of large plants like tomatoes, cucumber, and peppers use one form or another of run to waste hydroponics.

In environmentally responsible uses, the nutrient rich waste is collected and processed through an on site filtration system to be used many times, making the system very productive.^[15]

Deep water culture

^{The hydroponic method of plant production by means of suspending the plant roots in a solution of nutrient-rich, oxygenated water. Traditional methods favor the use of plastic buckets and large containers with the plant contained in a net pot suspended from the centre of the lid and the roots suspended in the nutrient solution. The solution is oxygen saturated from an air pump combined with porous stones. With this method, the plants grow much faster because of the high amount of oxygen that the roots receive.^[16]}

Bubbleponics

"Bubbleponics" is the art of delivering highly oxygenated nutrient solution direct to the root zone of plants. While Deep Water Culture involves the plant roots hanging down into a reservoir of water below, the term Bubbleponics describes a top-fed Deep Water Culture (DWC) hydroponic system. In this method, the water is pumped from the reservoir up to the roots (top feeding). The water is released over the plant's roots and then runs back into the reservoir below in a constantly recirculating system. As with Deep Water Culture, there is an airstone in the reservoir that pumps air into the water via a hose from outside the reservoir. The airstone helps add oxygen to the water. Both the airstone and the water pump run 24 hours a day.

The biggest advantages with Bubbleponics over Deep Water Culture involve increased growth during the first few weeks. With Deep Water Culture, there is a time where the roots have not reached the water yet. With Bubbleponics, the roots get easy access to water from the beginning and will grow to the reservoir below much more quickly than with a Deep Water Culture system. Once the roots have reached the reservoir below, there is not a huge advantage with Bubbleponics over Deep Water Culture. However, due to the quicker growth in the beginning, a few weeks of grow time can be shaved off.^[17]

Fogponics

^{Fogponics Fogponics is an advanced form of aeroponics which uses water in a vaporised form to transfer nutrients and oxygen to enclosed suspended plant roots. Using the same general idea behind aeroponics except fogponics uses a 5-10 micron mist within the rooting chamber and as use for a foliar feeding mechanism.}

Rotary

A rotary hydroponic garden is a style of commercial hydroponics created within a circular frame which rotates continuously during the entire growth cycle of whatever plant is being grown.

While system specifics vary, systems typically rotate once per hour, giving a plant 24 full turns within the circle each 24 hour period. Within the center of each rotary hydroponic garden is a high intensity grow light, designed to simulate sunlight, often with the assistance of a mechanized timer.

Each day, as the plants rotate, they are periodically watered with a hydroponic growth solution to provide all nutrient necessary for robust growth. Due to the plants continuous fight against gravity plants typically mature much more quickly than when grown in soil or other traditional hydroponic growing systems. Due to the small foot print a rotary hydroponic system has, it allows for more plant material to be grown per sq foot of floor space than other traditional hydroponic systems.

Cambodia's 'Aw, Shucks' Banker

Many entrepreneurs develop a head for numbers in their teens. For In Channy, a 14-year-old city kid evacuated at gunpoint in April 1975 to labor in Cambodia’s infamous Killing Fields, the only numbers that mattered were the 320 cows assigned to him. Losing a cow meant trouble. And under the Khmer Rouge regime, you didn’t want any trouble.

Fortunately for Cambodia’s stirring financial- services sector, Channy kept his nose clean. In 1981 he fled to a refugee camp in Thailand, where he became a teacher and won a scholarship to study business at a U.S. college. It would be another decade before he returned home. Today the former cowherd is president and CEO of ACLEDA Bank, Cambodia’s largest bank, which he cofounded in 1993 as a nonprofit microfinance lender making $10 loans to demobilized soldiers.

Last year ACLEDA (Association of Cambodian Local Economic Development Agencies) reported net profit of $24.3 million, a sharp rebound from recession-hit 2009, and is on track for another bumper year: First-half net was $21.7 million, 130% higher than the year earlier. Foreign banks are starting to wake up to Cambodia’s potential. Malaysia’s CIMB and Maybank have opened branches and are said to be seeking acquisitions. ANZ Bank has a head start with its joint venture with Royal Group, while the Pung family-owned Canadia Bank, the second-largest lender, is courting strategic investors for a 30% stake.

But none has the reach or reputation of ACLEDA, with 234 branches across Cambodia that are often the tallest buildings in town. Most banks stick to the capital, Phnom Penh, and take a pass on the small entrepreneurs who are the backbone of the economy in rural areas where most people live and work. Of Cambodia’s 1.1 million depositors 700,000 entrust their money to ACLEDA. “When people think of banks, they come to us,” says Channy, now 50.

Dependent on aid, tourism and garment exports, Cambodia remains one of Asia’s poorest countries. During 2000-07 its economy grew at over 9%, sparking interest from frontier funds seeking the next tiger economy. Corruption, red tape and a paucity of investable companies kept many on the sidelines; then the global crisis erupted.

But the tide has begun to turn, says Scott Lewis, chief investment officer at Leopard Capital, which runs a $34 million Cambodia fund and holds an indirect stake in ACLEDA. Vietnam’s largest asset manager, part of VinaCapital Group, said earlier this year it wanted to invest $100 million in Cambodian assets, though no acquisitions have been announced.

More funds may flow when Cambodia’s stock market gets going. It opened its doors on July 11, but no companies have listed shares. Besides sanctions-hit Myanmar, Cambodia is the laggard in Southeast Asia; even tiny, Communist-run Laos has a stock exchange. Three state-owned Cambodian companies are preparing IPOs, possibly by year-end.

Could ACLEDA follow suit? It has the credentials: solid profits, audited results and credit ratings from Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s. Bank staffers would benefit because they own 19% of the bank’s shares via an employees’ trust fund in which Leopard has invested. Other shareholders include several European nonprofits, the IFC and Jardine Matheson, which acquired a 12.5% stake in late 2009.

But Channy is leery of rushing an IPO. “Are we ready? Yes, we’re ready. Do we want to do that? Not yet,” he says, leaning forward in a carved wooden chair in his modest fourth-floor office. Instead, he wants to build out the business by tapping shareholders for extra capital. His ambitions don’t end in Cambodia. ACLEDA opened its doors in Laos in 2008 and is eyeing opportunities in Vietnam, China and Myanmar, where microfinance is still in its infancy.

Not that ACLEDA considers itself a microfinance lender, having long outgrown its NGO roots. Last year it became the first bank in Cambodia to offer mobile-phone services, which 35,000 customers now use to check balances, pay suppliers and transfer funds. Branches remit funds in four currencies (Cambodia is heavily dollarized). Multinationals rely on ACLEDA to make payroll in remote towns.

ACLEDA’s average loan is over $3,000, in a country with per capita income below $1,000, reflecting growth in small and medium borrowers. “We grow with our customers. Our micro customers stay with us,” says Channy.

So does his staff: Fourteen of the 28 original employees are still with ACLEDA, part of a 7,000-plus workforce. In many Cambodian companies workers follow orders and keep the boss happy. But that’s not Channy’s way. He believes in teamwork and participation, and encourages employees to speak up. It can be awkward and time-consuming for managers, he admits. “But when they accept [new ways], it’s sustained. We can grow fast,” he says.

Humility and honesty are also embedded in the bank’s culture. Anyone caught for corruption is fired, and loan officers aren’t even allowed to accept fruit from customers. “They’ve taken the best elements of Cambodian Buddhist culture and made it into corporate culture,” says Lewis. While Channy credits his colleagues for making the policy stick, Lewis isn’t fooled by his modesty. “He’s an ‘aw-shucks’ guy who drives the business,” he says.

The soft-spoken banker is the polar opposite of Kith Meng, the flamboyant CEO of rival ANZ Royal Bank (Read more about Kith Meng, “Bringing Commerce to Cambodia”). But Channy can be steely, too, facing down corrupt officials and meddling politicians. In 2005 ACLEDA agreed to pay $1.3 million for a plot of land in the capital for its headquarters. The landlord went to the tax department and declared a purchase price of only $130,000, but Channy objected. He says the owner alleged that the tax department was on his side and threatened to cancel the sale if ACLEDA didn’t go along with the ruse. So Channy wrote to the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Land Development, explaining his stance. ACLEDA got its land, and the taxman got his cut. “I told the landlord: ‘Now the price is known to everyone, to the minister,’” laughs Channy. He sits on several government committees and has advised the UN on microfinance. Brett Sciaroni, chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia, says, “His quiet confidence and his leadership of the institution he represents gives him considerable clout, which, consistent with his manner, he uses sparingly.”

Not bad for a cowherd who never finished high school. The Khmer Rouge didn’t believe in education or banking, so they closed the schools, abolished money and dynamited the central bank for good measure. After the regime’s fall in 1979 Cambodia had to start from scratch under Vietnamese rule, which meant a centrally planned economy.

As one of only three Cambodians with banking expertise, Chea Sok–today ACLEDA’s chairman–joined the reconstituted central bank. He had spent the previous four years planting rice and playing dumb, terrified that if found out he would be killed along with other intellectuals that the regime despised. At night he dreaded falling asleep in case he spoke French in his dreams.

In 1992 Channy returned to Phnom Penh to work as a loan officer for a UN-funded microfinance project. The following year the 28 employees turned the project into a nonprofit that was transformed in 2000 into a commercial bank. At the time Cambodia had plenty of banks, not all of them reputable (the Rich Nation Bank, anyone?). New minimum capital rules drove away the shadiest operators.

The global financial crisis dented Cambodia’s economy and checked ACLEDA’s growth. Net profit more than halved in 2009 to $9 million, yielding a paltry 9% return on equity (ROE) to shareholders. Still, Channy reckoned that Cambodia’s recession would be short and that the bank should position itself for a recovery. So he asked ACLEDA’s board to support more staff recruits and training, sharp slowdown or not.

It was a bold play that met with resistance, says John Brinsden, a retired Standard Chartered executive who sits on the board. “We had a robust discussion and met in the middle,” he recalls. That was probably what Channy expected, and it gave him enough juice to make 2010 a record year and hike ROE to 20%. “We’re now getting the benefits of scale because we did build up the team,” says Brinsden.

A trip into the countryside reveals why Channy is confident of continued growth. Kien Svay lies 20 km from the capital, on the busy highway to Ho Chi Minh City. There’s plenty of poverty, but signs of progress, too. Last year Tung Savoeung borrowed $1,000 from ACLEDA to buy fertilizer and seeds, and to install irrigation pipes in her vegetable fields. Fragrant basil plants bask in the hot breeze. Under her stilted house Tung’s grandchild sways in a bamboo basket.

Tung pays 2.7% monthly interest on her loan, her second in five years. Her monthly turnover is $500 to $750, but she isn’t worried by the debt and is saving for her children’s education. Besides, the loan sharks in town charge 6%, so she’s sticking to ACLEDA. “I’ve got no difficulty to repay this loan. My living conditions are much better than before,” she says. And so is Channy’s bottom line.

In the present, Monkey has been reincarnated as Joker, the chief of a group of outlaws. Joker and his gang are attacked by two demonesses, Spider Woman and Pak Jing-jing, who threaten and force them to do their bidding. Joker's second-in-command (later revealed to be a reincarnation of Pigsy) secretly overhears the demons' plan to capture the Longevity Monk and feast on his flesh to gain immortality. On the other hand, Joker falls in love with Pak Jing-jing. Grandpa Buddha shows up in disguise as a bunch of grapes, informs Joker about the danger he is in, and gives him a magic mirror which can reveal a being's true form.

The group are later attacked by Bull King, who is also after the Monk. Joker and Pigsy flee with Pak Jing-jing and Spider Woman to Waterfall Cave, where the two demonesses start fighting over Joker. Pak Jing-jing and Joker eventually flee from the cave while Spider Woman becomes pregnant with Pigsy's child by accident. As Pak Jing-jing had been poisoned by Spider Woman, Joker goes back to the cave to ask for the antidote, but Spider Woman imprisons him instead. In the meantime, outside the cave, Pak Jing-jing is captured by Bull King, who cures her of the poison.Inside the cave, Joker finds Pandora's Box, which can open up a time portal when moonlight shines on it and "Prajñāpāramitā" is chanted. He also overhears Guanyin's voice, telling him that he was actually the Monkey King in his past life and is destined to continue his quest to escort his master on the journey to the west. Meanwhile, Bull King and Pak Jing-jing enter the cave and start fighting with Spider Woman. Pak Jing-jing commits suicide after mistakenly believing that Joker has betrayed her love and fathered a child with Spider Woman.

Tricky Brains (Chinese: 整蠱專家) is a 1991 Hong Kong comedy film written and directed by Wong Jing, who also co-stars in the film. The film stars Andy Lau, Stephen Chow, Rosamund Kwan and Ng Man-tat.

A man who has a wide range of tricks at his disposal, including many practical jokes and some more serious tricks. When he is hired to break up a young couple, Lucy (Rosamund Kwan) and Kit (Andy Lau) he goes undercover as the long lost brother of Kit.

This is the funniest chinese movie I've ever seen. It has a lot of stuff in it that you have to be chinese to understand though so I wouldn't recommend it to some of my friends. It was such a good movie that I had to go and buy it. Chow Sing Chi and Lau Tak Wah should do every movie together. They make such a good comedic team. The most memorable part of this movie for me was the suit Jing Koo was wearing at the club. Theres hundreds of great scenes though and I should single out just any one. 10 out of 10. Doesn't get any better than this.

Just Heroes (Chinese: 義膽群英) is a 1989 Hong Kong crime film, directed by John Woo and Wu Ma. The film stars Danny Lee, David Chiang and Stephen Chow.

Following the death of a triad leader, there is conflict within the Hong Kong organised crime syndicate as various possible leaders vie for power. David Chiang attempts to bring the traitor in the midst of his own group to justice following a taped conversation of traitor admitting his crimes, but who cannot be found, while Danny Lee, the elected leader of the triad has his family attacked as he fights unknown enemies to bring the organisation back under control. Their actions are hindered by Chow Sing Chi who is attempting to build up anger between the two completing triads of Hong Kong. The film is brought to a bloody conclusion as the traitor leader of the group storms the triad safe house in a desperate attempt to gain control over the group, but is met by heavy resistance.
Just Heroes began production as a benefit for the Hong Kong Director's Union.[1][2] The film was made to aid director Chang Cheh who was broke.[3] When actors Danny Lee and David Chiang found out about Chang's financial situation, they developed the story Just Heroes that was made to be similar to the film A Better Tomorrow.[3] John Woo directed about 60% of the film.[4]

Sing (Stephen Chow) is a mainland China country boy who arrives in Hong Kong to visit his Uncle "Blackie Tat" (Ng Man-Tat). When Sing stays with his uncle and his friends in their apartment, Blackie soon learns of Sing's supernatural ability to see through objects and, later on, his ability to change playing cards by rubbing them. The movie begins by Jackie Chan telling the story of the Old Summer Palace and its looting and destruction by British and French soldiers in the Second Opium War. Among the treasures stolen are twelve bronze heads of the animals of the Chinese zodiac. In the present day, the bronze heads are auctioned for millions of euros each. The main company supplying the bronze heads and other stolen relics is MP Corporation. JC (Jackie Chan), is tasked by MP Corp to find the remaining lost bronze heads, with a promise of a 10 times bonus if he can recover all of them. JC visits a man named Professor Guan, who had created 12 identical replicas for study purposes with his team of researchers, under the pretense that he is a reporter named Martin from National Geographic. When left alone, JC scans the multiple bronze Zodiac animal heads using special gloves so that his secret organisation can replicate an extremely realistic model of them. After scanning, he goes to Paris to find a woman named Coco, recommended by Professor Guan, for more information on the whereabouts of two bronze heads.

If you expect this movie to have a story, you will be disappointed, but if you know who the director Chu Yen-Ping is, you wouldn't have expected there to be a story in the first place. "Funny Family" is quite entertaining.
he story is non-existent and the plot is ludicrous. With that said, the fight sequences are terrific, the acting isn't fantastic, but decent for a comedy, and the characters are at the very least entertaining which I think is enough to make this movie watchable. If you think that you might watch this movie now because of what I said, just realize that the movie has a scene of kung-fu bowling, cultural jokes that would be esoteric to Western audiences, and an annoying yet catchy theme song.
This movie is almost undefinable. If you do decide to watch this movie, just realize that this is the kind of movie where you have to turn your brain off as you watch it. If you do so, you might actually enjoy watching this. Just don't expect art.

Fatty and Baldy are a pair of detectives dealing with a crime syndicate of triad gangsters. After a jewellery robbery, they later find Lai (Carrie Ng), a woman who is associated with the gangsters, but end up getting themselves into trouble for going into the women's changing room. The gang leader, Wing (Lau Kar Wing), learns that one of his henchman, Johnny (Tai Bo), has leaked his secrets so he is stabbed by Wing himself. During their investigation of the Lai's house, things go very wrong for Fatty and Baldy, and they end up imitating robbers in order to escape from the gang. They steal her car and have a brief chase from the gangsters, trashing it along the way. Later that night, Lai calls Fatty and arranges a meeting at an abandoned warehouse. At the location another fight ensues, followed by a chase of Lai's boss, "Prince" Tak (Lung Ming Yan), and Fatty ends up ruining the English Deputy Commissioner's wedding. Fatty and Baldy are ordered to leave Hong Kong while things settle down, so they head to Singapore. However, Lai, who has turned against her gang, is then killed by a pair of transsexual assassins. When Fatty is about to have dinner with Baldy and his girlfriend (Wanda Yung), he inadvertently ruins their relationship. So the pair have dinner outside, leading to another confrontation. Baldy deals with two English henchmen, whilst Fatty is fighting the transsexual assassins.

Abominably silly comedy from Tsui Hark’s Film Workshop casts Chow Yun-Fat in one of his most challenging roles: a bigamist who must somehow earn the audience’s sympathy. Amazingly he does it.
The problem for Chow Ting-Fat (Chow) is that he loves both women equally and cannot say no to either as both bring the proposal of marriage to him. Wife number one is Joey Wong, a boutique owner who loses Ah Fat when he goes to take care of the European stock market. Wife number two is Sally Yeh, a stewardess who loses Ah Fat when he goes to see to the American stock market. Ah Fat juggles his sweethearts with the help of pal Chi-Hung (Waise Lee).
How anyone could find hilarity in bigamy is beyond me, but eighties HK Cinema found a way. The comedy in this film is an absolute cringe-fest (think Three's Company on speed), but it is frequently funny despite tacky musical numbers and overdone acting. Strangely, one can see what made audiences flock to the theaters for these eighties screwball comedies. The situations and jokes fly fast and furious, Chow gives a game comedic performance, and the female leads are charming.
