Baltimore's 2013 World Refugee Day Celebration!

Baltimore's World Refugee Day will be held at The Walters! The international showcase celebrates Baltimore as the home to talented refugees and immigrants. Baltimore's favorite beat boxer, Shodekeh, headlines w/ all of the international acts. Students of BCCC's Refugee Youth Project open with multimedia performances. Eritrean husband & wife, Abebe Setarge & Eyersaliem Zemichael will sing to African beats. Sokoja Kondorka, a musician from Darfur will sings in native masalit and fur languages while playing the electric guitar.

Live At Home Daughter Wants Boyfriend To Sleep In Her Room!

24 year old Caucasian lady who still lives at home with her parents doesn't appreciate the fact that her parents don't want her boyfriend of 5 five years sleeping in her bedroom because they aren't engaged or married. They graciously allow him to sleep on the couch in the living room, but that's not enough for her because she wants him to sleep in her bedroom, so she asked Wendy for her opinion.

Wendy didn't mince words and told her to get a room and I concur. She also talked about how her parents would think of a man being in the same room she grew up in, had her special childhood moments in etc and I couldn't agree more because parents wouldn't want to process that mentally. I believe, this girl is asking the dumb question because at 24 years old her parents haven't booted her out of their house. She is a clear example of a "failure to launch" who doesn't know her place and isn't wise enough to understand that when you live in someone's house, you obey their rules. We all know the bad economy is forcing some kids to stay longer at home, but many kids have also worked hard at several jobs and have left their parents' homes, so this speaks to her hustle/work ethic.

Miss thing here is acting like she has a sense of entitlement based on her parents' generosity. Life is "My house, my rules." If she wants to make the rules, she should go and get her own place or sneak her boyfriend in and out of her parent's house like other kids do. Her boyfriend should be glad that he can sleep on the couch in her parent's home. Why doesn't he have his own place they can go to? Birds of a feather flock together. He probably lives at home too, so they can't go to his place. No matter how "modern" this society is, parents shouldn't allow their kids' boyfriends or girlfriends to come and sleep with them in their own house. That is so disrespectful. Where's the respect for one's parents? Another thing is that it's bad enough that she doesn't have a job that pays her enough to live on her own. However, if she's not careful, she might mess around, get pregnant and add that to her stay at home dilemma, then she will really know just how many rules her parents can implement in their house...

I tell ya, today's kids and the liberties they take. I really don't know what the world is coming to...

The Caregiver

This is the art of the late Varnette P. Honeywood, acclaimed Artist and Illustrator. Honeywood is highly regarded for her use of color and light, patterns and textures. Honeywood is famous for her upbeat depictions of Black family life. Carrying on the tradition of genre painting, a Black artistic movement that followed in the wake of the Harlem Renaissance, her work portrays Blacks in a range of settings, going about various activities, always stressing the colorful and creative aspects of African-American culture. Her work tells stories and communicates ideas and thoughts.

The late Honeywood has a body of work that is daunting. Perhaps the most popular usage of Honeywood’s art was on The Cosby Show, but it was also showcased on Amen, Golden Girls, A Different World and 227. A huge fan of her work, Bill Cosby worked with Honeywood on the Little Bill books and animated television series. According to Bill Cosby: “Certain art in our culture depicts a down feeling about how African- American people are treated. They are poor and needy or need help in righting the wrongs. Varnette’s work lets us not forget the personal joys.”

Indie Documentary: DOEVILLE Needs Your Support!

Dear Friends,

With just eight days left in my Indiegogo campaign, I am so blown away by all your support for my indie doc DOEVILLE. I feel more inspired than ever to finish this film!

Last week, I had the chance to visit Gail. She is swamped with planting and farm work (that she does largely by herself with occasional help from a small group of volunteers.) Nonetheless, the summer crop of vegetables promises to be amazing!

I asked her to talk a little bit more about what growing her own food means to her. You can see the new video here. Today is June 12th, a day which adds yet another year to the date Chief M.K.O Abiola of Nigeria was killed while in detention for rightfully claiming that he won an election, that he did win.

I join with Nigerians all over the world as we evaluate where we are and how far we have come since the unfortunate incidence that will forever mark Nigeria as a country where dubious practices occurred, still occur and the truth doesn't always prevail...
