The Tale of the Mazda Protege

Also known as the Mazda Familia in Japan, the Mazda Protege has gone through various forms and various names. Like in South Africa, this vehicle is known as the Mazda etude. In truth, the Mazda Protege, the Mazda GLC, and the Mazda 323 is just one vehicle. They are one and the same. Changes had only been made to its name and of course, there were little furnishings here and there. However, for most, all these point to one vehicle which is the Mazda Protege. These Mazda Protege vehicles are built in Japan. However, the assembly is done on various countries which include Taiwan, Malaysia, South Africa, Colombia, and in New Zealand.

The Mazda Protege is a subcompact car that is produced by the Mazda Motor Corporation which has its headquarters in Hiroshima, Japan. This vehicle, has been introduced to the United States. Any car enthusiast worth their salt will know the Alfa Romeo brand, but do you know how they got to be one of the world's most important car manufacturers? Founded one hundred years ago in Milan, the Alfa Romeo brand has recently celebrated its centenary on June 24th 2010. It all began in 1906 when the French car firm Alexandre Darracq decided to join forces with Italian investors and create the Societa Anonima Italiana Darraca (SAID), the roots of the famous brand. Initially the company planned to manufacture their vehicles in Naples, but the site was changed to Milan and a factory was established there instead. A new company began as an offshoot of the business and the manufacturers created the Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, which would become known as A.L.F.A. The 24 HP was the first break out into the market, designed by Giuseppe Merosi.

With World War I drawing resources elsewhere, the ALFA factory submitted to a cessation in production for three years, recommencing in 1919. Italian entrepreneur and engineer Nicola Romeo became the new director in 1915 and oversaw the war effort, producing munitions in place of motor vehicles. When car production started up once more, Romeo changed the company title to Alfa Romeo and released the first model under this new brand: the Torpedo 20-30. The car company entered a golden age, producing high-class racing cars as well as consumer road vehicles. However, in 1928 Nicola left the firm and Alfa struggled to retain its position.

In 1932, with government assistance, the Alfa Romeo brand was rescued and they took control of the company's direction. Under the government of Mussolini, Alfa Romeo became the national car manufacturer but in World War II the factory was badly hit by bombers. Previous production of luxury cars turned into mass-production of popular models. But following the war, Alfa Romeo managed to retain pole position as a leading vehicle at the Grand Prix. In the 1960s it developed the GTA (Gran Turismo Allegerita) which won the Sports Car Club of America's Trans-Am championship. Despite falling into further financial struggles in the 1970s, the Fiat Group created a new company to manage the production of Alfa Romeo under the Alfa Lancia Industriale S.p.A. Since February 2007 the company has been part of this group, but part of the Fiat cohort since 1986.

Alfa has long been a respected car model with Alfa Romeos leased and bought the world over and the company continues to stand for quality, elegance and passion.

I've been a truck guy for many years. My trucks have always been reliable, functional, and tall. I never felt uncomfortable on the road or felt bullied by other vehicles. When driving a truck or any large vehicle, there is a level of respect that other drivers instinctively give you. They have the greater incentive to avoid a collision with you. This had been my experience on the road almost exclusively and as far back as is worth remembering.

Not too long ago, a series of events lead me to have to forgo my truck driving days and change the direction of my driving "career". It was time for a change and I embraced it. Gas prices aren't so kind to trucks so I was looking forward to some relief in that aspect. What I did not realize was that I was about to enter a world of vehicles that is vast, and full of options. A world of convenience, comfort, power, and gadgets! I was on my way to becoming a luxury sedan driver.

After two weeks of diligent research, test drives, and consultation I fell in love with a Black Acura TSX. I felt almost a kinship with it since my dream car had always been the Acura NSX (a car that I had almost purchased a year earlier out of pure childhood whim).

In the days, weeks, and months to come, I fell not only in love, but almost obsessed with my Acura. I had come to realize that this car was not just a car. It was a design. It had been since before inception, in the hearts and minds of designers, engineers, and executives. And now, it was in mine.

My Acura no longer is just a comfortable mode of transportation. It represents me and who I am. Every aspect of it from the engine, to the interior, to the amazing luxury features represents me. My Acura TSX and I are one.

Mazda's earliest roots are traced back to the year 1920, when its founder Jujiro Matsuda and a small group of investors acquired a small company called, Toyo Cork Kogyo. Toyo Cork Kogyo manufactured machine tools for domestic sales. In 1927, the company changed its name into Toyo Kogyo Co. Ltd. Slowly, but surely, Toyo Kogyo's operation gradually shifted from producing machine tools to the production of vehicles.

The shift in production resulted to the introduction of a three-wheeled truck, called the Mazda-Go in 1931. Aside from producing this vehicle, Toyo Kogyo was also involved in the manufacturing of military weapons used by the Japanese military. These weapons were used in the Second World War, particularly the Type 99 rifle series 30 to 35.

Mazda after the Second World War

After the Second World War, Mazda continued producing vehicles under the name Toyo Kogyo. But, this was subsequently changed to "Mazda" in 1984. According to the company's website, this name was derived from "Ahura Mazda", a Persian-Zoroastrianism God. However, most automotive historians also believe that the company's name was derived from its founder "Jujiro Matsuda." These claims still remain unverified, even up till today. Another question that goes unanswered, is why most of the company's earliest vehicles carried the name "Mazda", even-though the change of name was not yet implemented during those times.

Mazda's popularity started to grow in 1960 when the company introduced its first real car, which was the Mazda R360. The Mazda R360 was a 4-seat, 2-door coupe, powered by a rear mounted air-cooled 356 cc V-twin engine. This engine was mated to either a 4-speed manual transmission or a 2-speed automatic transmission. That engine was capable of producing a maximum power output of up to 16 horsepower and 16 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine was capable of producing a top speed of about 52mph.

Aside from producing vehicles, Mazda's operation also involved the development of the Wankel rotary engine. The company's focus on developing this engine was basically triggered by Mazda's desire to use this technology as a means of differentiating itself from other Japanese car manufacturers. Mazda's efforts and resources used in developing the rotary engine eventually gained positive results. The company started selling the newly-developed engine in 1962. Five years later, Mazda released the limited edition Cosmo Sport. This 1967 sport was powered by Mazda's rotary engine. This type of engine was also used in the current RX-8 engine. These events titled Mazda as the sole car manufacturer engaged in the production of the Wankel engines.

Mazda's development and use of the rotary engine in the R100 and the RX Series increased the company's exports a great deal. The increase in exports was eventually followed by Mazda's expansion in other areas of the world. In 1968 Mazda started its formal operations in Canada. Two years after, Mazda began its operations in the American market and became very successful. As a result of its success in America, Mazda produced the Mazda Rotary Pickup, which was offered for North American buyers only.

The success of Mazda in the American and world markets, brought about by the growing demands for the rotary engine, suffered a major setback in 1973 when the "oil crisis" occurred. Fortunately, the company did not fully abandon the production of vehicles equipped with piston-powered engines. These vehicles saved Mazda complete collapse. As a result, the 4-cylinder powered models, such as the Mazda Familia and the Mazda Capella series, became very important during those times.

Despite the decline in demand for vehicles with rotary engines, Mazda was able to find a way to use them in some of their models. Instead of installing the rotary engine, Mazda has used them in sports cars. The Mazda RX-7 became the first recipient of this strategy in 1978, and was followed by the modern version RX-8. The company had also focused its attention in developing small and lightweight sports cars with powerful piston-powered engine. Mazda's efforts to develop this type of sports car resulted in the production of the Mazda Roadster or popularly known as the Miata, in 1989. The Mazda Roadster was then given credit for reviving the existence of small sports cars, which started to decline in the later parts of the `70s.

Mazda-Ford Partnership

Mazda Motor Corporation developed a partnership with Ford Motor Company when Mazda experienced financial turmoil in the 1960s. Ford became a willing investor and the American car manufacturer earned a 7% financial stake in 1979, which had then increased to 27% during the `80s. Since Mazda had been suffering from financial difficulties, Ford continued to acquire some of the company's stakes, and in 1996 Ford was able to gain 33.4% of Mazda's financial stakes. These stakes, however, were sold by Ford in 2008, when the American car manufacturer was struck by the negative effects of the world financial crisis. As a result, Ford reduced its involvement with Mazda's operation, which eventually allowed the Japanese car maker to handle its own affairs and engage the global automobile market with the utmost independence.

Aside from acquiring Mazda's financial stakes, Ford was also involved in several projects with its newly established partner. Most of these projects were focused on the development of smaller cars and pickups. Aside from this, Mazda had also shared some of its resources with Ford. The Mazda Familia shared its platform with several Ford models, such as the Escort and the Laser. Mazda Capella's architecture was also used in Ford's Probe sports model and the Telstar sedan.

In addition to this, Mazda had also helped Ford develop some of its own vehicles, including the Ford Explorer in 1991. In fact, Mazda also sold a similar vehicle called the Mazda Navajo, but its sales became a failure. As a result, the Japanese car maker decided to discontinue sales of the Navajo. Mazda had also used the Ford Ranger as a base for its B-Series trucks. These trucks were sold in the North American market from 1994 to 2010. Due to poor sales, Mazda decided to discontinue the production of the B-Series as-well.

Mazda and Ford's partnership started to weaken when the Japanese car maker was headed by several presidents, such as Henry Wallace in 1996, James Miller in 1997, and Mark Field, who was a Ford executive, in 1999. Under Field's leadership, Mazda had started expanding its product line-up and marked the start of Mazda's independence from Ford. The global economic crisis further weakened the alliance between the two companies and Ford then sold its part of the stakes on Mazda. In November 2010, Ford's financial stake on Mazda was reduced to merely 3%, and this allowed Mazda to pursue its own interests and enhance its growth in the emerging markets. The partnership between the two companies is currently confined to several joint ventures and some technological information exchange.

The '69 Charger was just about entirely overhauled as the company wanted a new image for the car. One of the main purposes was to separate the appearance of this particular vehicle from that of the sibling Coronet. The new design was considered the "double diamond" or coke bottle styling. This names derives from the side profile which is rounded around to meet the front fenders and rear body panels in a way that resembles a coke bottle. The rear was enhance in appearance with what appears to be a kick up towards the mock spoiler. Similar to previous models the headlights were buried a few inches into the grille, making them virtually invisible during the daytime.

The 1969 Dodge Charger was offered with a great assortment of engines and transmissions. Beyond the base trim levels were the, R/T (road / track), Special Edition, Charger 500 and Charger Daytona. Both the 500 and Daytona models were created so that the company would have cars capable of competing in NASCAR competitions. The two packages were not created for the average customer. Another famous adaptation of the Charger is the "General Lee" which gained notoriety in different movies.

Both Special Edition and Charger R/T models came with more interior accessories and accents than any previous model year, which makes these cars highly desirable to collectors. Optional equipment included either a 4 speed manual or the Torqueflite 4 speed automatic.

The excellent rear legroom means the Park Ward lends itself perfectly to chauffeur-driven comfort, but I think it's the driver who gains most with this car. Gliding at a leisurely pace around the countryside in the glorious comfort of the car is a rare but much treasured treat, as is cleaning it and just staring at it in the garage!

Being a stretched version of the Rolls Royce Silver Seraph, the Park Ward gains extra space over and above the handcrafted perfection of its smaller stable mate. It's extremely long, but you can't really tell from the driver's seat. It's fun to take the family out for a ride in the luxurious car because this is one car that guarantees there won't be any fights over space!

Sir Frederick Henry Royce was born in 1863 to James and Mary Royce. He was the youngest of five children. His parents ran a flour mill however their business failed forcing them to move to London. Then in 1872 his father died. After only a year of formal schooling, young Royce had to drop out and start selling newspapers and delivering telegrams.

However in 1878 an aunt provided some financial support and he was able to start an apprenticeship with the Great Northern Railway at Peterborough, England. But in three years, he was out of money so he came to London and went to work for the Electric Light and Power Co. He then moved to Liverpool where he worked on street and theatre lights.

Royce was thrifty and saved his money. In 1884 he had saved twenty pounds and his friend, Ernest Claremont, had fifty pounds. They merged their savings and started the F H Royce Co. producing electrical fittings. The company was successful and in 1894 became Royce Ltd.

However the economic slump of 1902 together with competition from foreign manufacturers brought hard times. Royce purchased a second hand Decauville and began to toy with it, working out various modifications and improvements. By 1904 he was testing his own engines.

Then in mid-1904 a mutual friend introduced him to Charles Rolls. Rolls was impressed with Royce's two cylinder Royce 10. So much so, that he signed an agreement to purchase all the cars that Royce could make. They would be marketed as a Rolls Royce. Royce now had the financial backing to build a successful company. The first Rolls Royce was displayed at the Paris Salon in December 1904

The two partners were vastly different in personality and background. Rolls was formally educated in Britain's most prestigious schools whereas Royce was self-taught. Rolls was an adventurer who lived life in the fast lane while Royce was a perfectionist who believed, "Small things make perfection but perfection is no small thing." Rolls came from a wealthy family. Royce had been poor. In spite of their differences, however, the two men got along well and were close friends.

In 1906, Rolls and Royce created Rolls Royce Ltd. and Rolls was employed as Technical Manager at a salary of 750 pounds annually and four percent of all profits in excess of 10,000 pounds.

Rolls soon became bored and exchanged his position as Technical Manager for a non-executive manager so he could pursue his flying interests.

Royce was a workaholic who didn't always eat properly and became ill in 1902 and 1911. He also had major surgery in London. But he did not allow his health to interfere with his work.

The night before he died, he sat up in bed and designed an adjustable shock absorber. His motto was, "Whatever is rightly done, however humble, is noble." He was also the originator of the quotation that "The quality remains long after the price is forgotten."

The automobile he created had a "name that is synonymous with engineering excellence, style and luxury." That reputation continues until this day.

The technological aspects are where the Phantom has experienced the biggest revamp, the sat nav has been improved, while there is now a smart phone connectivity port, as well as new USB access, too. The quality of the audio output from the Logic7 technology means the sound is specifically and directly delivered to the ears of both passenger and driver.

The new Phantom is available with a Driver's Package that installs front and rear brackets, giving additional firmness to the shell, while the steering wheel is thicker and the brakes give you more feel for the road.

I Had to Sell My Rolls Royce

I was really sad when I decided to sell my Rolls Royce. And this wasn't just any ol' Rolls Royce. This was a 'pimped-up' Rolls that I did myself, and hired out for weddings, hen and stag nights, theater nights, well, for any kind of celebration where people wanted to travel in style, and feel the part. And look the part they did in my Roller. She was a perfect, gleaming specimen and everybody who traveled in my car felt like royalty, and I treated them like royalty. It was what they deserved.

However, in today's economic climate where a lot of people are counting the cost of everything, hiring a beautiful motor is no longer top of everybody's list and I just can't afford to keep her on the road anymore. I thought about putting my Rolls into storage, but the storage fees were too high. I looked into renting a friend's garage for awhile, but there wasn't any security and I didn't want my car stolen. The best thing was to sell my Rolls Royce and for her to be with somebody who would look after her in a manner she was accustomed to. After all, a Roller is not your ordinary car.

And because my car was no ordinary car, I could not sell my Rolls Royce in an ordinary way. I mean, I couldn't stick a notice in the local rag, or advertise my Roller in the shop window of my local post office. Besides, even if I did, I would not want everybody to know my private business, because when people read the advertisement and description of the Rolls Royce for sale, they would know it was mine, and work out I was in need of some cash. What was called for was a way to sell my Rolls Royce in a discreet manner.

Now you would think I would sell my Rolls Royce in the same way as I bought my car. However, I acquired my car through inheritance. Therefore this was a subject matter that would take some research as I had never sold such an exclusive car as a Roller. My first port of call to gather some advice was the Rolls Royce forum on the internet. In fact it turned out to be my last port of call, as they came forward with a suggestion that was very agreeable with me. They suggested I sell my Rolls Royce through a company that was an expert in buying prestige cars. Some of the people on the forum had bought and sold various Rollers from these types of companies and said it was the only way forward with such a specialised car.

So, I contacted a company, and after dealing with them, all I can say, is why doesn't everybody use them? It was a breeze to sell my Rolls Royce, and I would certainly use them again. All I did was drop them an email with my contact details on it, and the type of car I was selling, and they phoned me the next day. I spoke to one of their experts and we discussed the finer details about my car, such as her history, how she has been looked after, who had driven her, and history of accidents. Once he had all the necessary information he gave me a quote, which I accepted, as I knew it was a very fair price. The last detail we finalised was the address they were going to come and pick up my Roller and exchange payment. The whole process was easy and straightforward, something I never expected to happen when I had to sell my Rolls Royce.

The Rolls Royce Mascot

Mascot is a term used to refer to the hood ornament on a car. It is generally represents something which the car symbolizes. Mascots can be outstanding works of art on their own or else be quite ordinary. The first Rolls Royce had no hood ornamentation. However in the early 1900's many people in Great Britain were working to enhance public acceptance of the automobile. One of these was John Walter Edward Douglas-Scott Montagu who, in 1905, became the second Lord Montagu of Beaulieu. He was a passionate lover of cars and an enthusiastic advocate of motoring interests.

At that time, there was an Automobile Club in Britain, which sponsored the Thousand Miles Trial to prove the safety and reliability of motorcars. The club was managed by Claude Johnson who had a very beautiful secretary named Eleanor Thornton.

Both Claude and Lord Montagu were friends and admirers of the artistic works of Charles Robinson Sykes, a graduate of the London Royal College of Art. Montagu, who owned a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, commissioned Sykes to produce a hood ornament especially for his automobile. Using Eleanor as his model, Sykes crafted a sculpture of a woman holding her fingers to her lips and named it The Whisper.

Montagu's car struck a chord with the public and people began attaching all manner of objects to their cars. By this time, Claude Johnson had moved from the Automobile Club to the Rolls Royce Company. He became alarmed at the impropriety of these impromptu hood ornaments and decided to commission a mascot that would reflect "the overall style and quality of the car." So he turned to his friend Sykes.

Johnson, as he conveyed to Sykes, had in mind something akin to the spirit of the mythical beauty Nike, whose image was on display at the Louvre in Paris. Sykes, however, disagreed feeling that the representation should be more feminine. Evidently Sykes prevailed, as he created another sculpture of Ms. Thornton. The sculpture was three inches high and crafted of white metal. Later, it would be manufactured from stainless steel. There is a myth that the ornaments are made of silver but silver has never been used. Again, the lady has her finger to her lips as though conveying a secret.

Sykes named his creation the Spirit of Speed.

But Johnson changed the name to the Spirit of Ecstasy.

In the meantime, Ms. Thornton had become secretary to Lord Montagu and they had also become lovers. Because of the mores of the time that forbade any romantic alliance between two people of such vastly different social and economic standing, their affair was a secret known only to a few close friends. Together, they had a daughter however she was placed in a foster home and knew Montagu only as uncle.

Their love story ended in tragedy. They were both aboard the SS Persia, enroute to India, via the Mediterranean when the boat was struck by a torpedo from a German U-boat. Eleanor drowned but Montagu survived. Privately, he was devastated but he dared not publicly mourn her death.

However, their romance may be immortalized on the hood of the world's most prestigious automobile if indeed the speculation that has been made is true. For it is said that the 'secret' embodied in the image was actually the love that Eleanor shared with Montagu.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom is manufactured by the Rolls Royce Motor Cars company based in England, part of the BMW automobile group. The car is assembled in Chichester and Goodwood manufacturing plants within the United Kingdom, with the car launched in two thousand and three, with production continuing to this day (in two thousand and nine).

The luxury car saloon has a body composed of mostly aluminium, with the design being modern, sleek, yet retaining the classic RR features. The high end market car finishes it production in the Goodwood assembly plant, with the car receiving bespoke paint, leather and woodwork to the clients personalised preferences. The car is sprayed the correct colour by a machine, and then later polished by hand. The final leather, wood and body work is all performed expertly by hand. Customers who purchase the Phantom have a choice of over forty thousand paint colours for the car body, and can chose any colour of leather for the interior.

The rear doors of the Phantom are what are commonly referred to as "suicide doors", i.e. the doors are rear hinged so the doors open in the opposite direction than most car door. Named coach style doors by RR, the doors are closed from within via a button within the pillars, due to the seating position within the rear of the car. The Phantom is equipped with some safety features due to the doors, with the car set to a slow maximum speed if the doors remain open whilst the car is moving. The doors are also automatically locked whilst the car is in motion.

The price of the car when it was introduced was a quart of a million British pounds, or three hundred thousand US dollars. From its launch in two thousand and three, to the year two thousand and eight, there were close to five thousand units sold, with sales picking up to the latter years. In 2007 RR introduced the Drophead Coupe variation of the Phantom.

You may have heard of that infamous saying, "He who dies with the most toys wins," well, my toy list just expanded after driving the Rolls Royce Phantom.

I am making room for a very special toy, a toy that celebrated 2 special events recently, the 100 Year Anniversary of Rolls-Royce and the 1,000th custom built Rolls-Royce Phantom made in Goodwood, England. I had the distinct pleasure to get behind the wheel of a Rolls-Royce Phantom that carries a lineage of the Rolls-Royce "Silver Ghost", which founder Frederick Henry Royce called "the best car he ever made" and became know as "the best car in the world." With breeding like this, and 80 years of craftsmanship, the expectations were high.

Two experts on the Phantom, Bob Austin and Terrence Easton of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars NA, LLC, walked me through the many features of this magnificent automobile. The Rolls-Royce Phantom was on display by Miller Motor Cars of Greenwich, along with many other exquisite products at the Robb Report magazine's "Luxury on Greenwich Harbor" in Greenwich, Connecticut, United States.

The technology in this car is found under the hood and not splattered across the dashboard. The instrumentation is simple and no nonsense. You are not encumbered with dials, and fancy read-outs; though you are surrounded by craftsmanship that is second to none. The interior is one area that the owner can put his or her signature on by selecting from a broad array of colors, materials, such as cashmere and leather, wood and wood inlays, and on and on; in truth, however, the options list is virtually as long as an owner's imagination.

The Phantom for its size is extraordinary, with a top speed of 130 mph it can accelerate 0-60 mph in 5.7 second, and 0-100 mph in a mere 5.9 seconds. Under the hood it boosts a 6.75-litre V12, with maximum power of 453 hp, so don't worry about running a bit late to the theatre.

So, do you wonder what it is like behind the wheel of a Rolls-Royce Phantom? I was in a state of euphoria piloting the automobile through some of the back areas of Greenwich; where a sweeping back road turned into a slight bend, where entering a long highway entrance ramp became a short merge, and other highway traffic became oblivious to me. Pressing the accelerator of the Phantom was like pushing your foot through the wind, you expect a forceful push from the engine, but not in the Phantom, where the engine produces all that extraordinary power, but it is smooth, quiet with little to no engine push. The ride was so smooth that I had to keep glancing at the speedometer to make sure I was abiding by the law and driving at the appropriate speed, though the temptation to check out the top speed did cross my mind. Tooling around in a Rolls-Royce Phantom was the highlight of my day at the Robb Report event, which also happened to be my birthday. Being a winner, I am baffled though on how do I get the Phantom off my toy list, and into my hands?
