I haven't seen many fine Mathematicians become journalists. But then I do not expect the latter to integrate 4th order equations, I just hope that they look a little more closely at what they publish- maybe plug-in a few numbers here and there.

Amongst the first things I noticed about this post is that it relies heavily on statistics and numbers. This strengthes my case all the more.

Surely, India's whopping population does not suggest that ours is a sexually abstinent country.

Population has a lot to do with sex. To increase population people need to have sex.

But the question here is that how much does sex have to do with population. Lets look at some numbers here:

Lets say the population of the country in generation x is 200 Mn

Now for the population to become 1 Billion in the x+1th generation each person needs to have 5 kids. i.e. each couple has 10 children.

(Note that a population increase of 5 times in 1 generation is a very steep increase)

Now 10 children is NOT a lot of sex. Statistically, the chance of conceiving in any random intercourse is 18%. Which means every 5.5 intercourses produces 1 kid.

Therefore to get 10 kids per couple all we need is 55 intercourses during the lifetime. Now that is really not very a pretty number considering by global standards having sex 3-4 times a week is very normal.

The point here is not Indian do not have sex. The point is that we are not really a society of hypocrites. The exact same line of reasoning that I debunked is used very frequently even by the, so called, renowned people on shows like "we are the people" too.

RTC:Under The Table And Dreaming Couple of things I need to point out. First,I think it is a good thing that the owners of the tea-stall had put their on the seat rather than the ground where the boy was eating. Second, I do not think it is fair to assume that the owners did not put their feet on the ground because a Dalit was sitting there. It is quite possible that they did not want to step in the boy's food therefore they chose to keep their feet on the seat inspite of it being uncomfortable. OR for all you know they were doing the classical Indian palti.A lot of Indians sit in the 'palti' position while eating their meals no matter how uncomfortable it is. Going by the looks of the picture they tea stall owners look below middle class and somewhat rural- The 'palti' thus gains weight. Having said that I need to point that I do find this picture quite discomforting and have very little respect for the 2 men on the table for treating the little kid they way they are. The Pink Chaddi Campaign

Brief:

The plan is to send loads of pink colored chaddi’s to Ram Sena on Valentines day.

I have a few issues with the idea:

Firstly, the plan urges us to send them underwears. Underwears, mind you, not jeans, not kurtas. Evidently, this is done with the intention of embarrassing the RS. I don’t see how embarrassing it would do us any good. If nothing else, it might just enrage the Ram Seniks all the more. It might also give them another reason to justify their actions-agar baaki log humare saath gand macha rahe hain to hum badla hi le rahe hain.

It is almost instinctive for us to support anyone who opposes anything we oppose. Its like negative of negative is positive (ala dushman ka dushamn, dost). What we tend to forget is that opposing a wrong action with another incorrect one is not right.

Second, why should any one of us care about the Ram Sena. Why should I do what it wants me to do or what it doesn’t want me to do? Should I rather have a mind of my own and continue with my own plans.

This plan, of doing the opposite of what the Ram Sena wants me to do, gets Ram Sena popularity. In all probability this is what it is looking for in the first place. For all you know Ram Seniks are doing this hoping for some media primetime which could help RS gain momentum for the forthcoming elections.

Another little thing that I don’t understand is why people compare PC to Gandhigiri.

Pink Chaddi is NOT Gandhigiri.

Gandhigiri requires the victim to be polite to the aggressor such that the aggressor realizes his mistake. PC is an attempt to humiliate the Ram Sena.

Anyways, just because something does not fall under Gandhigiri does not prove that it is wrong. I mean if u believe in PC, just do it.

I am not Defending Kasab

I have always maintained that violence/anger is more-often-than-not a sign of a person's or an organization's insecurity. The terrorist organizations, VHP, Shiv Sena are more than apt examples of my theory.

Maybe they just dont believe in the Indian legal system. Why else would Shiv Sena activists vandalize the houses of the lawyers who came forward to defend Kasab? (1)

They have nothing to fear:

History has shown us on more than just one occasion that in the high profile cases the courts rule in favor of the common man's opinion ( we are a democracy after-all), remember the Jessica Lal murder case. I dont see why the Shiv Senaactivists would want to vandalize the homes of their own people.

This is a case that will get all the media attention in the world. And there is no reason why the courts would not punish Kasab, there is no chance for any lawyer to even come close to "winning " the case. The only reason why lawyer would take up this case- media attention and the free publicity. The poor lawyers are anyways getting the attention thanks to Shiv seniks ransacking their houses.

Usually, I would have supported Kasab's right to a fair trail. Actually I do so even now. But this case is an "open and shut" case. Infact the president of India should superceeded the legal proceedings and save all the time that the jury, media, public will waste on this case.

Will write more on the case as soon as more legal aspects come out. That is if the Shiv Seniks allow the case to continue.

The Scarlett-Fiona controversy

Much has been said/written/discussed about the controversy in question.
a number of politicians, journalists, columnists have blamed Fiona for here daughters death(1). Some, actually, believe that Fiona deserves what she got. Others believe that it is the Goan Police and politicians who should punished for Scarletts death.(1)

I agree with both.

The cops are to be blamed. It is and has been known that drugs are easily available in Goa. It is just a matter of common sense that drugs can be this easily available in a state if and only if the cops and politicians are hand in glove with the drug-mafia. The cops would have had obvious vested interest in keeping the Scarlett rape-murder under wraps and therefore they did the what they did.

Fiona IS responsible for her daughters death. (Jon Stock does not agree. Please read). I agree that Fiona was a liberal mother, she chose to give her daughter a lot more freedom than parent usually would want too. Fair enough this was Fiona's style of parenting and as there is no one right style of parenting, Fiona's style is acceptable. The fact that so many people believe that Fiona got what she deserved is that the heart-of-a-relationship between Fiona and Scarlett is quite different from that between most Indian parents and their children. even then, by no standards is leaving a 15 year old in :
1.a foreign land (India)
2. with a rather questionable reputation esp. when it comes to safety of women, drugs, rapes
3. an then, Goa which is rather infamous for its booze, drugs culture*.

Shouldn't the fact that policing of a region is rather ineffective make a parent even more concerned about his/her child's safety in that place?

I guess a more sensible Fiona could have avoided this situation but that does not mean that the rapists, cops are any less responsible than they would have been if the rape would have happened in any other situation whatsoever. They should very well be taken to task and be tried, suspended, fired what ever the need be.

I think negligent/naive parenting and unfortunate circumstances led to Scarletts raped, murder and bad policing led to an unfair trail and hidden evidences.

* I don't not believe that Alcohol, drugs is the root of all evil.
Nor do i believe that the people who party/drink are ameer baap ki bhigadi aulads, with no moral standards. But I do realise that alcohol can cause people to lose control and hence they might indulge in activities they would have been more cautious about, otherwise.

Lead India--- or should it?

This show in question started a few months back with electing representatives from various part of the country to compete for the being the country most respected leader. This is one reality show that I genuinely enjoyed watching: the finesse with which Kaura, Dey completed each of the task assigned to them or the babu-panti which was so evident every time Abha Singh came anywhere in the focus of the camera. The best thing was this show was asking the educated strata of the society to vote for educated leaders primarily on their leadership ability.

I dint know that Lead India guys had something else in mind.

Sometime ago Dey got kicked out of the show this came as a shock to me. Then last week or the week before that Kaura got kicked out..Now this doesn’t make sense at all. I thought thought these 2 people were definitely the strongest leaders on the show.

Nanavati, Misra, on the other hand, were no where even close to decent ended up as finalists.

(The last 2 paras are my personal opinion- they do not necessarily state what the nation feels, it could just be fair that Nanavati and Misra are finalists)

I saw this advt in today mornings TOI (TOI is the main sponsor and the brains for LeadIndia "Initiative". This advt asked all people in Karnataka to vote for “their leader” Misra and ensure his victory in the finals. The advt manged to create a sense of urgency as it emphasised “last 2 days to results”.
In small font, the bottom of the advt read: ” Cost Rs 7 / Min”

What the TOI guys get from this:
1. Score on the public image front- We are doing so much for the country
2. Mint money by pitting- Gujjus vs Kanadda or even better IT Vs Non-IT

Now this makes more sense to me, Gujarati public, in general, is generous with using their cellphones. And when it is a matter of their Gujju Identity they will be more than just happy to vote for their Nanavati-bhai.

Also, don’t we all know the halat in Bangalore, IT + technonlgy+ lot of money+ most kids feel they should do something for the country (deadly mixture).

SAD. Aint it?

Vir Sanghvi has this article about brand-whores. The article is quit convincing, atleast it seems to be so (coz rich females are Bimbos). However the article definitely falls short on research and/or analysis.

More importantly, Mr Sanghvi should realise that it is not a crime to be not-rich and yet want to wear/use a designer label. I think its perfectly normal if a lower-middle class Delhiite chooses to buy a fake GAP T-shirt for 100 bucks or for that matter a pair of Reebhoks for 250 (missplet deliberately) from the Karol Bagh/ Sarojini Nagar. Chances are, he would buy the item not with the intention of flaunting it most of the people in the locality would buy their clothes from the same shop. The fact that the item is copied from a designer label confirms that some effort has gone into designing it. This implies, though not necessarily, that it is most stylish thing in that person's reach.

Also, for some, wierd/complicated/unknown reason brand-names = bad-names. A brand gets a good name because has proved itself. In today's competitive market no can last if it doesnt maintain the quality promised by its brand name.

Coming back to falling short on research and analysis. There are many reasons / explanations as to why a person with normal/high self esteem would have no issues buying a designer or fake designer labels.

Most of the brand replicas that are available in the market are actually copied from the actual product which automatically implies a good design, a lot of such material is available at Chandni-chowk(I have never tried it). And, just for the record, most of the designer stuff does NOT have a gaudy brand name printed across the material, the logo is rather subtle. Ofcourse, the product is available at a fraction of the cost at which one could possibly procure.

One of my buddy bought a "fake" Nike Dri-fit T-shirt for 100 bucks. The only reason it is fake is that he bought it for Rs100. I think the T-shirt looked perfectly normal to me. I don't see why I would not want to buy this T-shirt. I would just put it along with my original Nike T-shirts.

Why would I want to wear an expensive brand in the first place? Quality. It is as simple as this: when I go out to buy a 800 Action shoe I feel that the company has not even put in 100 Rs on ensuring the quality of the footwear whereas when I go a Nike store I feel that the company would have put in 300 Rs of worht in ensuring the quality of the 3000 Rs shoe. I guess here it effectively boils down to the abilithy of a person to afford a particular brand and choosing were exactly one wants to be in the price-quality trade-off.

If there must be an issue with using fake labels then it must be encroaching upon a designers right to use his design. I will reserve my view on this for some-other post.

Personally, I do not see myself buying any cloth with the brand name printed right across the chest, I find it way too tacky for my taste. Though, I do not mind buying a nice replica of the Nike T- Shirt my buddy got. Infact I will make it a point to look for a similar T-shirt the next time I go to Daman.

Well, we all have recieved those email forwards about Google employees and the kind of freedom they enjoy at their office.

Wonder what it takes to work @ Google ???

A nerdy computer-aholic degree from Stanford is just not enough. Google actually expects its employs to be smart too.

Here is a sample set of questions that were asked in a Google interview. It is very probable that these questions were asked to a candidate applying for the post of a Software Engineer(in which case Smart-Ass replys may not work).

Heyy Ram- II

A lot has happened on the Ram-Sethu controversy since the last post.

Jairam Ramesh has expressed his "opinion"(desire ??) that Ms. Amibika Soni resign over the goof-up.

Karunanidhi wants to know which Engg college did Sri Ram graduate from.(Maybe from the SriRam College of Engg., he was such a bright student that they named the college after him).
What Karunanidhi does not realise is that India is a democracy and that if the majority supports a belief then the question of logical or illogical becomes invalid.

The saffron brigade want the government to offer an unconditional public apology.

The government is reconsidering its stand on the whole issue, because of the religious sentiments of the people (also, that the polls are close).

However, Swaminathan S Anklesaria Aiyar suggests that the apparent economic benifit of demolishing the bridge is a mere mirage.

One striking point in the article is the claim that the actual distance that the ships will actually gain only 70 nm and not 215, as the govt claims (Ofcourse, the vercaity of either of the claims is disputable). It was actually unclear to me as to why were all the maps of the reduction in distance simliar to the one below. Was the distnace being calculated = The big red line - the small black one??? Whereas, the actual calculation should have been done on the basis of the actual path traced by the ships.

This brings me to the next question, where do these journalists get these pics from ? Was is given by an official government agency (which would mean that the attempt to misguide was delibrate) or were all the news agencies mess up the whole pictrial description on their own (actually, that is quite possible).

Whatever be the case, the govt should re-consider issue and verify the actual economic benefit of the project before Lord Ram decides to support BJP for the coming elections.

Heyy Ram

Ram-Setu is a mythical bridge which Lord Ram built to cross over to SriLanka. some of the Hindu organisations believe that this bridge is the same as the present bridge that connects India and SriLanka. More on the bridge here. Evidently, the bridge has a lot of religious significance for both Hindu and Islamic religions.

The political controversy surrounding the bridge is this: Congress has taken up a project to demolish a part of the Adams Bridge for economic benifit. The BJP feels that the bridge is a sign of Hindutva and that the anti-hindu, pro-minority, Congress Govt should not allow the bridge to be demolished.

Now, the various scientific organsiations have only been able to conclude that there is no evidence to suggest that the bridge is man-made. This in itself is inconclusive and thus cannot be used as an evidence to necessarrily conclude the baselessness of the Ram-Setu being the bridge Ram used to cross over to Lanka.

The economic advantage of demolishing the bridge is that a number of large vessels which have to reach the east coast of India travel along routes that circumscribe Sri Lanka (approx: shown by the red line) and effectively travel 400 odd extra kilometers. Demolishing the bridge will allow these ships to travel a shorter route (black line).

The Ram-Sethu is more than just another controversy. For some, it is a matter of religion a symbol of their Gods existence for others a simple hindrance in economic development effectively it is a debate of myth or belief over religion. Now starts the accusation game of the politicians with each party blaming the other of cheating the public, people calling DMK leader Dravidian godless man etc…

For most educated people it boils down to: if we allow such myths to hamper the decision making of our country where do we stop. The debate is not just about Ram-Sethu. It is a more important debate of what is acceptable in the society as development at the cost of emotions and what all is not.
To elaborate on this:

1.) If a group of 50 individuals believe that all construction work in the country should cease immidiately because they belive the Earth is their mother and that constructiion work hurt their mother and therefore human sentiments. Should all the work actually be stopped?

We will very happily term that group of people as retards and happily ignore them.

2.) Instead, if a major oilfield is discovered underneath a small temple / mosque. Is it right for the government to destroy / displace the monument?

Most of us would agree that it is acceptable because not many people believe in the temple anyway and also the economic benefit that will be gained for so many other people are massive therefore its agreeable.

3.) Alternatively, if a small oilfield (Assume the oilfield to be economically viable) is discovered under a place of relatively more importance, will it still be as OK to destroy / displace the monument for the oilfield?

Probably No.

4.) In an extreme situation, if the temple is as impotant as say the Tirupati temple or Lal Mandir or Haji Ali then?

Hell, NO!!!!

A lot of people believe or have written or said, in reference to Ram-Sethu, that orthodox myth(s) cannot and should not decide the economic policies of a country and therefore should not be allowed to interfere in such an important matter. In principle I agree that development of a country should not be hindered by myth(s). But, all the same, we cannot trample over the emotions and beliefs of thousands of people just for economic benefit. Isn’t this what democracy is all about?

Another politician-gentleman on “We-the-People” smugly pointed out that industrial growth around the Taj-Mahal had been stopped by a Supreme Court ruling, responding to a PIL, and that this is similiar to the Ram-Sethu bridge controversy. I would like to point out that the two cases are starkly different. This is so, because

1.) Taj-Mahal is not a religious symbol, instead it is a symbol of Indian heritage and architectural magnificence

2.) Taj-Mahal is in itself an industry; it generates employment and revenue for the nation

Coming back to the question: should Ram-Sethu be destroyed or not?

Just because Lord Ram might have built the bridge should we not save it?

Can we just destroy a small column of the 40 km bridge?

I dont know. It is tough to appreciate the logic/belief of the believers. Till I get to know their exact stand this is as much as I can say.
