About the award
The Centre for Ecology and Conservation is pleased to offer an annual fees-onlyscholarship to one student from each of Africa, Asia and Latin America.
These are highly competitive awards: students must demonstrate an extremely high academic standard and must show prior commitment to the field of biodiversity conservation. Evidence must be produced as to means of self support during the one year period of study.

Postdoctoral studies in Biochemistry and Biophysics

The department conducts a broad spectrum of biomedical research and education within medical biochemistry and biophysics. Presently our department consists of 11 research divisions with a total of approximately 300 employees.

Description of the research project/area of research
The group uses a system structural biology approach to study function and mechanism of enzymes that catalyze protein modifications (ADP-ribose transferases in particular) with emphasis on implications for cancer.

The focus of the current position will be on the biochemical characterization of ADP-ribose transferases. The group applies X-ray crystallography and a wide range of biophysical and biochemical techniques to study protein function. The laboratory has a strong track record in the use of high throughput technologies for protein production, crystallization and structure analysis. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments for protein chemistry, biophysics, crystallography, and high throughput technologies.

The project is initially for one year.

Qualifications of the applicant
A person is eligible for this position if he or she has obtained a PhD at a university outside Sweden, and is a non-Swedish citizen.

Applications are invited from researchers with a PhD degree or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a doctorate (PhD) in biophysics or biochemistry. The ideal candidate will have profound knowledge, both theoretical and practical, in protein biochemistry, as well as a proven experience in recombinant protein production. Preferably, the applicant has a record in structural and functional analysis of enzymes. Profound knowledge of protein biochemistry is required. Experience from assay development and enzyme inhibition studies is preferable. The candidate must have experience in writing scientific reports. Furthermore, the candidate must be a result-oriented problem-solver who requires minimal supervision. The candidate must be able to work within a team environment.

Hands-on experience with the following techniques will be considered an advantage:
- Enzymatic assays, including assay development
- Protein thermostability assays
- Biacore
- Isothermal Titration Calorimetry
- Analysis of protein-protein interactions
- X-ray crystallization
- in-silico methods for structural analysis of protein-ligand interactions

Information about research scholarship for postdoctoral studies
At Karolinska Institutet, scholarships may only be established for the education of the holder. Educational scholarships are restricted for postdoctoral studies lasting up to two years and exempted from Swedish income tax.

A scholarship for the pursuit of postdoctoral studies may be awarded for up to two years in the five years following the public defence (or equivalent) of a doctoral thesis. The scholarship amount is approved for up to six months at a time and is paid monthly.

Background

The New Zealand-ASEAN Scholars Awards seek to make a substantial contribution to ASEAN’s development by providing opportunities for postgraduate study (i.e. Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s degree and doctorate/PhD) in New Zealand.

The New Zealand-ASEAN Scholars Awards (NZ-AS) are part of the New Zealand’s official development assistance to the ASEAN region. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, through the New Zealand Aid Programme, delivers this scholarships scheme.

Under the NZ-AS scheme, up to 170 scholarships are available to candidates from ASEAN countries. From the total of 170, up to 50 scholarships per annum are available for Indonesian applicants.
The scholarships are for full-time study (See the scholarships benefits) at one of nine eligible New Zealand institutions. See the list of eligible New Zealand education institutions

Who Can Apply?

Individuals who meet the following profile may apply for the NZ-AS scholarships:

From the public or private sector;
With a proposed field of study in support of sustainable economic development ,as the core focus of the New Zealand Aid Programme, especially on agriculture, renewable energy (Geothermal) and disaster risk management;
Strong candidates from all areas will be considered, especially candidates who can demonstrate leadership quality and potential for future leadership;
Preferably be under 40 years of age at the time of application for Masters and under 45 years of age at the time of application for PhD
Those with work experiences in a field relevant to their intended course of postgraduate study, and can demonstrate a connection between their previous field of study and their intended field of postgraduate study.

Applicants must also meet the general eligibility criteria outlined in the ASEAN Scholarships under Indonesia Country Portfolio.

Selection Criteria

As the MPA is designed for young professionals, previous work experience is one of the requirements for entry into the program. Students generally have between 2 and 10 years of professional experience at the time of application. Each year, the Selection Committee makes some exceptions to the minimum 2 years’ rule for candidates with particularly outstanding academic records, internships or other activities which show clear motivation, and very strong potential. Nevertheless, all applicants must at the time of application already be in possession of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.

English Proficiency

The MPA program is taught entirely in English at native-speaker proficiency. Candidates who a) are not native speakers, or b) do not hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s level degree from an institution whose medium of instruction is English, must submit results of either the TOEFL (minimum recommended scores of 107-IBT, 263-computer-based, 627 paper-based) or IELTS (minimum recommended score of 7) at the time of application. In some exceptional cases, candidates whose results are very close to the recommended score may be admitted if the strength of their application is found to be compensatory. To send your TOEFL scores, the Sciences Po institution code is 0695 (Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris). No department code is needed.

Other Application Requirements

Candidates must pay a non-refundable application fee of 80 €.

They must attach to their application form:
- two academic and two professional references (online system)
- a personal statement (submitted in the application form) in English

Undergraduate scholarships - Kingston University London

We offer up to ten scholarships for undergraduate students for September entry.

The scholarships are open to prospective full-time undergraduate students in any subject area for each year of a three-year course (subject to satisfactory progress). Foundation degree students (first year entry only) are also eligible for the scholarships.

The deadline for September 2012 scholarship applications is 31 May 2012.

Who can apply?

You can apply for an award if you:
are an international student (classified as 'overseas' for fee purposes);
have an offer of a place on an undergraduate degree course or foundation degree course at Kingston for 2012 entry (first year entry only); and

Non-EU/EEA students enrolling in a Leiden University master's degree programme starting September 2012 or February 2013 ( All MA, MSc and LL.M programmes as mentioned on the website Master's programmes in Leiden).

Scholarship Amount:

The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship programme has 5 awards:

Platinum	Covers the tuition fee minus the home fee* and an allowance of €10,000 for living costs
Gold	Covers the tuition fee minus the home fee*
Silver	Covers 75% of the tuition fee
Bronze	Covers 50% of the tuition fee
Ivory	Covers 25 % of the tuition fee

The number and type of award of the scholarship depends on the budget available for each Faculty department. The type of award has no reflection on the students' academic level of excellence.

* The tuition fee will be reduced to the amount of the home fee. Students who have been awarded a Platinum or Gold award still have to pay the home fee themselves.

Please note

Students should be aware that the LExS is not a full scholarship. It is necessary to find additional funding to be able to finance their study and stay completely.

One of the requirements for being granted a residence permit in the Netherlands is that students must submit proof that they have sufficient financial means to finance their study period in the Netherlands. Leiden University advises a budget, not including the tuition fee, of approx. €10,000 to €14,000 per year to cover the costs for rent, insurance, living expenses, course books and local transportation. How much money students actually spend will of course depend on their life style and spending habits.

Eligibility

A privately financed student from Indonesia, who wishes to pursue a master’s course in Japan, should meet the following requirements:

Nationality:
Applicants must be citizens of Indonesia
Educational Background etc:
Applicants must be graduates or pending graduates of universities and have a distinguished academic record and must have completed 16 years of school education or have been accepted as eligible for enrollment at the targeted graduate schools. However, applicants must have completed their bachelor degrees no more than 4 years prior to the date of their arrival in Japan. (with age less than 26 years old in March 2013).
Specialization:
Applicants must major in any one of the science and technology disciplines. (Mathematics, Natural Science, Engineering, Bio-technology, Agricultural, and IT (Information Technology)
Note: This excludes medical science, pharmacology and dentistry
Japanese Language Proficiency:
Applicants must have adequate proficiency and knowledge in the Japanese language not only for studying at master’s level but also for understanding Japanese culture.
Health Conditions:
Applicants must be medically fit and must be strongly motivated to study in Japan.
Others:

Applicants must be interested in and have the desire to contribute to the development of Indonesia and to promote friendship between Indonesia and Japan. .
o Applicants must obtain a study visa and arrive in Japan by end of March 2013to attend the award ceremony to be held at Panasonic Headquarters at the beginning of April 2013.
Applicants who are receiving or will receive other scholarships including Japanese Government Scholarships are not eligible for the Panasonic Scholarship.

Application Procedures: Indonesia Panasonic Office will select Panasonic Scholarship candidates in three phases, as follow :

PHASE I.
All candidates must apply through (and only by) electronics application. This first selection will seek a record of the applicants overall data including: biographical information, academic records (GPA), language capabilities, and readiness to enroll master degree program in Japan. The e-application submission will be closed on MARCH 17th, 2012 . In Phase I, 100 (hundreds) applicants will be selected as semifinalist and their names will be announced in MARCH 22th 2012 . via e-mail and website.

PHASE II.
Semifinalists will be notified and receive an official application form through login and download from Panasonic Scholarship Indonesia website (user and password will deliver only to 100 (hundreds) Semifinalist later.
The form will require detailed biographical data, academic report (transcript), an essay of master research proposal, personal recommendations, and Professor acceptance. The semifinalist must submit official application form (item 1 until 5) as mentioned below by mail with deadline on APRIL 30th, 2012.

Documents to be submitted in Phase II :
1. Application form (prescribed form No.1)
2. A letter of recommendation from the dean of the university the applicants graduated from (prescribed form No.2)
3. Study and research plan in Japan (prescribed form No.3)
4. Original university transcript (or legalized), photocopy only without legalized unacceptable.

The committee will selects 12 (twelve) finalists based on documents screening, and mini-thesis or research proposal evaluation.

PHASE III.
On June 11th – 12th, 2012 [tentative] all finalists will be invited to attend the Final Selection Stage. The Committee composed of Panasonic Gobel Group of Companies top management, distinguished universities professors, Panasonic Scholarship Inc. Japan, and Training & Recruitment Consultants will interview and evaluate each finalist. The 3 (three) most qualified finalists will be selected to be Panasonic Scholarship Nominees.

PhD Scholarship in Physical Chemistry and Spectroscopy

A 3-year PhD scholarship in physical chemistry and spectroscopy is available at the Department of Chemistry under the supervision of Assistant Professor René Wugt Larsen.

Project description
One of the major challenges for the physical sciences is to explore how the macroscopic properties of condensed phases, materials and biological systems emerge from complex non-covalent interactions at the microscopic level. The interplay between the different classes of non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding, dispersion interaction and steric repulsion emerges already on the level of isolated weakly bound molecular clusters. The PhD project will be focusing on vibrational spectroscopy of weakly bound molecular clusters between simple organic compounds and water embedded in inert condensed phases and isolated in supersonic jet expansions at low temperatures. Hydrogen bonds between organic molecules and water are of particular interest, ranging from fundamental questions concerning conformational isomerism and relative hydrogen donor and acceptor preferences which are responsible for the microscopic origin of anomalous thermodynamic properties such as heats of mixing, volume contractions and azeotropic behavior of liquid mixtures to more applied questions related to separation technologies for industrial production of biofuels and chemicals.

Qualifications
The successful candidate should have a master’s degree in chemistry and should be confident in English, both written and spoken.

The fellowships are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in the Chemistry, Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering PhD programme at DTU. The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) are designed to promote capacity building within organisations in 61 countries by providing training and education to mid-career staff. The NFP is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the budget for development cooperation.

The overall aim of the NFP is to help alleviate qualitative and quantitative shortages of skilled manpower within a wide range of governmental, private and non-governmental organisations. This is done by offering fellowships to mid-career professionals to improve the capacity of their employing organisations.

NFP sub-programmes

The NFP offers you three sub-programmes to choose from:

To be eligible for an NFP fellowship you must:

be a mid-career professional with at least three years' relevant work experience;
be a national of, and working and living in one of the countries on the NFP country list valid at the time of application;
be nominated by your employer, who pledges to continue paying your salary and guarantees that you will be able to return to the same or an equivalent position at the end of your fellowship period;

Project Description: Current technologies for controlling the emission of particulate from diesel vehicles rely on the reaction of NOx with the carbon content of the particles. However, the exhaust produced by passenger cars is often not hot enough, or does not contain enough NOx, to remove all the particulate. The aim of this project will be to improve the performance of known catalysts for the alternative (but slower) C+O2 reaction, allowing it to take place at typical car-exhaust temperatures. The major challenge will be to understand the mechanism by which gas-phase O2 is activated by the catalyst and transferred to the particulate, before the practical problem of ensuring effective contact between the catalyst and the immobilised particulate can be addressed.

This is a Cardiff University President's Research Scholarship. The award includes full UK/EU tuition fees plus a doctoral stipend matching UK Research Council National Minimum (£13,590 p.a. for 2010/11, updated each year).

The European Master in Agricultural, Food and Environmental Policy Analysis aims at providing a high quality education in designing and assessing public policies targeted to the agricultural and food sector as well as the rural environment. This European Master responds to the increasing need to better understand and anticipate the various and often complex socio-economic and environmental effects of these policies either in a functioning market economy as in the European Union or in economies in a development or transition phase. The European Master offers a two-year academic curriculum with integrated and advanced theoretical, methodological and empirical courses in economics and quantitative methods as well as in agricultural, food and environmental sciences, agricultural and trade policy, environmental and natural resource policy, rural development policy and agribusiness management and market analysis. To connect theory and methodology to practice, a problem solving project is developed and presented as a master thesis at the end of the two-year curriculum.

The European Master is jointly organised by five leading European educational and research institutions: the Corvinius University of Budapest (CUB) in Hungary, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Sweden, the Rheinische-Friedrich-Wilhelms Universität Bonn (UBonn) in Germany, the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) in Belgium and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Spain. These five partner universities are recognised worldwide for the quality of their educational programme and scientific achievements in agricultural, environmental and economic sciences. The required 120 ECTS credit points are structured into three blocks: a minimum of two semesters of studies (55 ECTS) at a first partner university, as well as two semesters of studies (60 ECTS) at a second partner university, and two joint summer schools (5 ECTS) at partner universities. The language of instruction and examination is English for most of the courses in three partner universities while it is either French at UCL or Spanish at UPC for most of the courses. The Master degree is awarded as a double degree from the two home and host universities.
This European Master is accessible to candidates holding a bachelor degree or a recognized equivalent academic degree with a minimum of 180 ECTS or 3 years university study from an accredited institution, with sufficient undergraduate training in economics and agricultural or environmental sciences, with an excellent scholastic average, and with fluency in English but also French or Spanish if attending either UCL or UPC respectively.

Swiss Government Scholarship Programme

The Swiss Government through the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) grants a limited number of scholarships to developing countries, among which Indonesia is included. These scholarships are offered to Indonesian POSTGRADUATE students wishing to undertake research or study in a master programme at a Swiss university or Federal Institute of Technology as mentioned on page 5. Priority will be given to research fellowships.

The duration of grant is basically for the nine-month academic year (always from September to June. It is not possible to start the scholarship in the Spring semester or any other time in the year). It can be extended up to 12 months. The extension request will be analyzed according to the FCS criteria.

Peat and wind farm construction: geo-environmental consequences.

The Scottish peat wetlands are experiencing unprecedented development in the drive to exploit wind in the renewable energy supply mix. They are also important carbon sinks with an ecology that is easily disrupted by construction activities.

The principal aim of this studentship is to explore the extent of decomposition and the geomechanical consequences induced by construction activities on the peat.

The successful candidate will undertake a novel programme of geotechnical laboratory testing on peat soils. He/she will work closely with colleagues at the James Hutton Institute, where a parallel programme of work looking at the carbon consequences of the same construction activity is underway.

The candidate should also demonstrate an awareness of the environmental issues surrounding current construction activities on the peat lands in Scotland and further afield.

IntelliBike: development of an intelligent tool for the monitoring of off-road cycle path running surface deterioration

Highway pavement survey methodologies are primarily concerned with engineering assessments that relate specifically to motorised vehicles. This approach has neglected the need to consider the requirement to monitor the infrastructure from the cyclists’ perspective. Cyclists are more sensitive to uneven running surfaces, standing water (and ice in winter months), excessive or overhanging vegetation, poor sight-lines, congested bicycle-vehicle interfaces and debris on the running surface. In relation to highways, what might be a small pothole to a motorised vehicle may potentially be a cause of damage or an accident to a cyclist. However, if the vehicle collecting pavement condition data is a motorised vehicle, it is unlikely to be able to access cycle paths to identify issues that are potentially dangerous to cyclists.

Developing and implementing efficient, sustainable construction techniques is critical to achieving the low carbon thresholds identified in the Sullivan Report and the now implemented Part 7 of the Building Standards in Scotland. The Centre for Offsite Construction and Innovative Structures (COCIS) is currently working extensively with industry partners to integrate a supply chain to deliver a low carbon affordable solution to meet these requirements, “FUTURE:affordable”.

The PhD research will seek to deliver a model for conducting cost analysis so that the cost impact of integrating new components, products, details or technologies can be determined.

The PhD student will have to have good communication skills and be capable of working closely with a range of building and construction professionals and academics in order to assist the evolution of a system solution which is viable in terms of cost structure.

The Scottish Energy Centre has undertaken pre-eminent work in the integration of smart metering technologies in buildings; particularly in relation to occupant behaviour. The rollout of smart meters will play an important role in Britain’s transition to a low-carbon economy, and help to meet some of the long-term challenges which will ensure an affordable, secure and sustainable energy supply.

Overview

The Japanese Government(Monbukagakusho) offers a scholarship in selected fields, called the Special Scholarship for International Doctoral Programs. The Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University will accept eight new Ph.D. course students under this program from the year 2012. This program has several attractive features—for example, the official language will be English(Japanese language skill will not be required); and the fact that all tuition fees will be waived. Interested applicants should carefully read the rules and conditions in the guidelines for admission before submitting their applications. Selections will be by Kyoto University, with successful students recommended to the Monbukagakusho as candidates for the scolarship.

Detail and ELigibility

1. Eligibility: Applicant must be from a country with which Japan official diplomatic relations has, and must be currently studying/working outside of Japan. Those who are currently staying in Japan are not eligible for this program.

2. Age: Applicant must be under 35 years of age as of April 1, 2012.

3. Academic qualifications: Applicant must satisfy one of the following conditions by the end of September 2012.

i. Holds a master’s level degree.

ii. Has completed 16 years of school education in a foreign country and subsequently spent at least two years conducting research in a university, research institute, or other such facility, and is recognized through research achievements as having scholastic ability on a par with or higher than that of a person who has completed a master’s degree at a graduate school in Japan.

iii. Is recognized by the school, on the basis of individual screening ofapplication, as having scholastic ability on a par with or higher than that of a person with a master’s degree, and is at least 24 years of age.

4. Recommendation

Each applicant must be officially recommended to the president of Kyoto University by the president of the university or the dean of the faculty/graduate school of the university from which the applicant has graduated. Said university must meet the conditions mentioned in (3). In addition, any applicant who is currently working must submit an official letter of recommendation written by the head of the employing organization.

5. Physical and mental health

Applicant must be physically and mentally healthy enough to carry out studies at Kyoto University.

6. Language ability

Applicants must be competent in English.

7. Other conditions

i. Each admitted student must arrive in Japan between October 1 and October 7, 2012.

ii. Any applicant who is affiliated to any military entity at the end of March 2012 is ineligible.

iii. Any applicant, who receives scholarship money from his /her overnment, or from any other foundation, will not be accepted.

Details Scholarship

1. Stipend:

Approximately 156,000 yen per month. This will be provided for a maximum of 36 months, but will not be paid in cases of extended leave from academia.

2. Travel expenses:

i. To Japan

An economy-class air ticket between the international airport closest to the admitted student’s home address and Kansai International Airport will be provided.

ii. From Japan

An economy-class return air ticket home from Japan will be offered on condition that the admitted student will be leaving Japan within the last-payment month of the scholarship.

iii. School fees:

Entrance and tuition fees will be waived.

Selection and Admission

1. 1st stage selection

The Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University, examines the documents submitted and makes a preliminary selection. Those selected are recommended to the Japanese Government for the 2nd stage selection. Results of this selection will be conveyed to the applicants by the end of April 2012.

2.2nd stage selection

The Japanese Government examines the applications recommended by Kyoto University and decides on the final candidates for the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship. Applicants will be informed of the final decision by the end of August, 2012. The Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University, will send certificates of admission to the successful applicants at this time.

The Aberdeen Business School is able to offer a limited number of scholarshipsto assist exceptionally able students who wish to undertake its MBA programme on a full-time or online basis.

Two PhD Student Positions in the context of the EU project RACE.

	Two PhD student positions in Computer Science. These positions are in the area of hybrid knowledge representaiton and reasoning, planning and execution monitoring.
	About the positions. The main task of the students will be to perform world-class research on hybrid knowledge representation and reasoning, and hybrid planning and plan execution monitoring, for robotic systems. Hybrid in this context means that the robot is capable of inferring new information about its environment from a variety of information of different nature. For instance, the robot will consider flexible temporal requirements (e.g., serving food while it is warm, but not too soon after the previous course) together with causal requirements (e.g., serving a meal satisfies the goal of feeding the guests) and resource constraints (e.g., dishes from the previous course must be cleared as space must be made for the new course). Such requirements should be upheld both during planning and on-line execution monitoring. The successful candidates will be employed as PhD students with Örebro University for an expected duration of three years. They will work within the local RACE team at Örebro University, under the supervision of Prof. Alessandro Saffiotti and Dr. Federico Pecora. They will also collaborate with the other European partners in RACE, both remotely and through physical meetings and research visits. A limited amount of teaching may also be part of the PhD student’s duties. The students will receive a monthly salary adequate to the cost of living in Sweden and will be included in the Swedish social security system.
	About the RACE project. RACE, “Robustness by Autonomous Competence Enhancement”, is a European Union FP7 project. The overall aim of RACE is to develop an artificial cognitive system, embodied by a service robot, able to build a high-level understanding of the world it inhabits by storing and exploiting appropriate memories of its experiences. Experiences will be recorded internally at multiple levels: high-level descriptions in terms of goals, tasks and behaviours, and sensory and actuator skills at the lowest level. RACE will develop methods for conceptualizing acquired experiences so as to extend the robot’s planning and execution capabilities beyond preconceived situations. AASS’s role in RACE concerns (1) the development of knowledge representation and reasoning schemes suited for reasoning about multiple types of experiences; and (2) the use of this acquired and inferred knowledge for plan generation and execution. Constraint-based techniques will be explored for both representation and reasoning and planning/execution monitoring purposes, and in particular a meta-CSP approach for integrating temporal, resource, causal and spatial reasoning will be examined. The RACE consortium consists of six European partners: the University of Hamburg (Germany), the University of Leeds (UK), Örebro University (Sweden), the University of Osnabrück (Germany), the University of Aveiro (Portugal), and the technology transfer institution HITeC e.V. (Germany).

	One PhD student position in Computer Science. This position is in the area of integration of robots and smart environments, with specific emphasis on applications to elderly care.

Robot-Era will demonstrate the general feasibility and effectiveness of these systems, as well as their social plausibility and acceptability by end-users. The role of the AASS in Robot-Era will be to develop an advanced, modular and customizable ambient intelligence infrastructure within which the above services can be provided. A unique feature of this infrastructure will be that it will span across several environments, ranging from homes to streets and public places, in order to provide ubiquitous assistance to senior citizens. AASS will also supervise the development of one of the project’s two testing sites: a smart apartment inside a large residential facility intended for senior citizens. The Robot-Era consortium consists of twelve European partners from Sweden, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom, and it is coordinated by Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa, Italy.
