You know what I don’t like? I don’t much like metal influenced punk. I just don’t. I remember when I was little 19 year olds with bad mustaches and Iron Maiden back-patches used to sit, for HOURS, on a bench across the street from my house, doing exactly nothing. Hated metal ever since. I figured if champs like those cats were gonna be down, I wasn’t .

You know what I do like? I like American Speedway. Their punk definitely has a metal blade up it’s ass (remember that t-shirt from back in the day? Fuck that was foul.) but it is drunk rowdy shit, all the way through. More Motorhead than Judas Priest. More beer bottle throwing and less Satan admiring, if you see what I mean. Think Joey Ramone and Lemmy devised a band to play at the yearly Ugliest Dudes On Earth Convention. I think it has to do with American Speedway being from Philadelphia. I like Philadelphia. Everybody there, the times I’ve visited, has been half drunk, kinda disheveled and enjoying the Rock and Roll. Much like my good self.

This is their second album. Short good songs to get drunk to and have a laugh. This time out they added a woman named Lorraine “Dirty” McGurty on guitar. She used to play with an all-female Metal band named Wench back in the day. Here’s an FSS fun-fact, a member of Wench gave me a tattoo of a switchblade and a playing card when she was apprenticing at a shop in Jersey City. Ain’t that interesting? Fuck you then. Just get this album. It’s good.

Hipsters and pretentious pricks masquerading as legitimate punk-juiced rockers? Not AMERICAN SPEEDWAY, not even close. Well, the "punk-juiced rockers" part is correct and legitimately so. On "A Bigger Boat"what you hear from these Philadelphia rabble rousers on their sophomore release is the genuine article: inferno-hot, punk fueled rock 'n roll wildness. It's really that simple.

Diving headfirst into the crowd from a stage of splintered wood, beer cans, broken instruments, and a mess of tangled cords, the ass hauling begins with "Howl Ya Doin?" and keeps right on haulin' until the final notes of"Watch your Step". On "A Bigger Boat" it is one pace (fast), one attitude (drunk 'n surly), and one middle finger in the air. The band gets in and out with reckless abandon on these 10 cuts, all of which take a similar punked-up approach to off-the-rails rock 'n roll, yet redundancy is kept to a minimum. Though the attack is unrelenting, there is just enough spice in the riffs and skill in penning memorable choruses to make full-album spins not only satisfying, but essential for maximum enjoyment. Not a bad tune on here, but the real gems of the bunch are nonetheless the street punk rock 'n roll of "I Killed Laura Palmer" and the ridiculously infectious boogie-punk-rock of "Get off the Cross". Props go to "Watch Your Step"for its '70s AC/DC by way of southern rock by way of punk swing.

Here again, "A Bigger Boat" isn't the kind of album that lends itself to selective track listening; it's all or nothing. Once you start it you won't be able to stop it anyway, nor would you want to. If the members ofNASHVILLE PUSSY went on an all-night meth binge and then entered the studio to record an album after traveling back in time to do so in collaboration with the MC5, it might sound a little like "A Bigger Boat". Play it loud and then play it again.

Certain bands out there are one-dimensional, they have a sound and you either like the sound or you don't like it. Bands like The Ramones, AC/DC, or Motorhead. The last two on the list would seem to be a big influence on this quartet from Philly who, judging by their press photo, really enjoy their beer. So yes, they are American (cans of PBR in the photo).

Like an even more hepped-up New Bomb Turks (or Nashville Pussy or Turbonegro or Zeke or...), these guys pop the clutch and jam the car into 4gth gear. (Grinding gears? Who cares about that.) Opening cut "Howl Ya' Doin" rips out of the gate with burning guitar and a vocalist who sounds like he gargles with Drano while "I Killed Laura Palmer" still blasts but has a touch more melody. They have the good sense to write an anthem about their home state ("Pennsylvania") and "Call me Night Rider" could be an anthem for a generation. What generation I'm not sure. This is relentless blowtorch record that leaves no prisoners. The band does what it does well and though they are a bit of a one-trick pony, you won't hear their fans complaining because THEY NEED MORE.

Music to piss the neighbors off by. I'm opening the window right now.

This is called Punk 'N' Roll, or in its extended version, Punk Rock 'N' Roll. No matter what you call it, it's highly energetic. American Speedway is the band and their sophomore release is entitled A Bigger Boat. Their mixture is not new, yet it's not as commercialized as today's Punk MTV Rock. Both Rockers and Punksters will like what is being displayed here. With the simplicity of Punk that concentrates on speed and simple, straightforward riffs, there are also peak moments of Rock, such as the lead guitar section that did wonders for the band alongside the rough vocal style, with apparent influences of the '80sAC/DC and '70s & '80s versions of Motorhead. The addition "Dirty" McGurty, the once lead guitar of the all female Metal band Wench, has truly elevated this band's status from being just another Punk group.

American Speedway takes a high octane ride with sophomore music release A Bigger Boat.

The east coast quartet's powerful and combustive new title is directed full speed ahead from the introductory track, and appropriately named "Howl Ya Doin," which sets the pace as to what is to come. All songs are delivered by the gritty and visceral vocals of Michael Thursby which would make any Punk purist proud. Lyrics are to the point, up front and center, and at times can be regarded with a slight tinge of grim humor. A raw Rock n' Roll esthetic is adhered to throughout. "Call Me Night Rider," "Dolls Eyes," "Ready to Roll," "Get Off the Cross," are a few standout tracks out of many. Chris Callahan on drums, Billy Angry on bass/vocals, and the newly added Lorraine "Dirty" McGurty on guitar, completes the lineup of American Speedway.

American Speedway's A Bigger Boat is a sonic journey that goes beyond, and is never once put on cruise control. The band is currently on tour in support of their new title.

American Speedway clearly favour the approach of complete and utter balls out rock and roll. On this, their sophomore long player, there’s no slowing down for the often obligatory down tempo number, this is 0 to 60mph from the get go and it’s at full tilt until they hit the wall at the end of the final track.

A friend described American Speedway as being like “Zeke meets early AC/DC … or actually Gaza Strippers”, on top of which this would not be out of place if you like bands such as Motorhead, Nashville Pussy and The Supersuckers (when they actually rocked). This should provide you with enough reference points to get an idea of where American Speedway are coming from and it’s a full frontal assault that connects with the precision of a pitcher throwing the perfect game.

This is rip roaring rock/punk/metal with a battery of drums, ear tingling leads and a thick sounding guitar that all blend into the perfect backing for the vocals of Mike Kerchner, which have just the right amount of gravel to add extra bite to this release.

From the opening track, “Howl Ya Doing” all the way through to the excellent “Watch Your Step” this is pure entertainment that invigorates the soul, gets the pulse racing and puts a huge grin across your face as it rages on and on.

Saving the best for almost last, American Speedway unleash “Get Off The Cross” as the penultimate track and one which is impossible not to get hooked on; clearly my highlight of the album and a track that demands use of the repeat button.

Apparently the wonderfully nicknamed Lorraine ‘Dirty’ McGurty, formerly of metallers Wench, has joined the band since the first album “Ship of Fools” was released and her lead guitar across the album is something to behold as it helps keep the pace of the songs at full speed, with no sign in letting any slackness take hold at all.

This whole album is good fun.

Comments: Yeah, if you like your rock and roll loud, gritty, fast, with the right combination of musicality and muscularity, this is it. And yes, this is vinyl from this year 2011–and these guys know what it means to release a record today: gatefold packaging and blue marble vinyl. Yeah! I was fortunate enough to “preview” this record: my band had the opportunity of playing with American Speedway, and they blew the doors off the little mountain bar we were in. I couldn’t not buy this record. And I’m glad I did. These four fuse Motorhead with a bit of southern rock and some of their own dirty imagination and humor. The musicianship is top notch: the rhythm section is tight, with drummer Callahan mixing it up: sometimes playing straight punk rock, sometime mixing things up with some thrash metal stops (and his play really shines on the variety of styles he plays on “Get off Your Cross”); Dirty McGurty (yeah, I love they have a female lead guitarist) not only plays some amazing licks and leads, but her solos explore the fretboard quickly and cleanly. If I have any complaints it’s the lead vocals–they’re a bit more high-pitched scream than I prefer, but still perfectly understandable with a strong personality. Some of the songs have great sing-a-long choruses: “Call me Night Rider” declares that we have “No use for seatbelts where we’re going/ No use for wipers in the rain” and by second listen I was chanting that in melody right along with the band. “I Killed Laura Palmer” echoes Charged GBH when the chorus hollers out “I am the hunter. I am the hunter” as all I could hear was “I am the hunted.” That’s not a complaint, and this song brought a smile to this Twin Peaks fan’s face. The record starts with “Howl Ya Doin’” which is just a straight up rock and roller: hard, heavy, forward driving, with just a little bit of backbeat to keep the foot tapping. What follows is about 27 minutes of relentless rock and roll: angsty, angry, ecstatic, driving, and it leaves me wanting more. That’s a good thing... and the one thing I really want is something that isn’t fast and thrashy and trashy: these four are good enough to hold my interest with something a bit slower, something that will surprise me in the course of this record. They keep the intensity up, and there’s a lot to be said for that. This record is worth the dollars, and they’re such good cats, they’re worth checking out live, too. But pack your ear plugs: they like it loud–which is how this record is meant to be played.

Wow. Hang on to your tats, this bunch of guys will blow them off your forearm if you're not careful. Going back to those great speed metal days, American Speedway is both 100% American and faster than a beer bottle opener slipping down to the bottom of the lake. With two guitars (Michael Thursby, Lorraine "Dirty" McGurty), a bass (Billy Angry), a drum kit (Chris Callahan), and a handful of Black Beauties, these boys and girls were born ready to rock. McGurty is a new addition; she used to play for Wench and was a rare catch for this Philly band. With a sound between Motorhead and James Hetfield, these guys can't seem to write or play a bad song. From "Howl You Doing?" to "I Killed Laura Palmer" to "20th Century Boy," each and every song requires mandatory head banging, devil horns metal sign, and best of all if you insist on tattooing their logo on your personal body, it's a killer lightning bolt skull. These songs are all short and sweet like a shot of flaming Jägermeister. I'm almost moved, there might be a future for rock and roll with these guys at the helm.
