I wondered if I could succeed in the field I'm studying in the "real" world. I imagine most students go through this on their journey through education. Many of which switch majors, or even schools all together. I have been blessed with one goal in mind from the start; to be involved in construction. However, through my general knowledge gain, other opportunities and interests blossomed. So now I occasionally wonder if I was truly meant to be a Structural Engineer or Construction Manager.

With each passing day my worries grow smaller. Somehow, from somewhere, I actually learned something. Some of you may know, I am involved in a Senior Design project to design a 14 story high-rise in downtown Milwaukee. This project has been a blessing in disguise. It not only thrust me into a role of leadership, but it made me realize that "hell I know what I am doing...". The scope of the project is incredibly daunting, especially when given an incredibly short deadline of one week to complete a full design of a high-rise building! I have to admit that I have been incredibly stressed this past week, but out of the pressure I seem to have succeeded. Well I have kept our group on pace to finish the design by Wednesday.

This project is a year long process that involved a research phase in the fall termed as "programing", an architectural design in the winter, and a full system design in the spring (Structural and MEP). I was nominated as project leader from the beginning; due to my experience from last year working on a much smaller project for my Structural Senior Design project. Don't think that I got the position merely on that fact alone, as there is another Structural/CM whom has the same experience as myself in the group. I took the responsibility with a bit of skepticism, as it is a large task and an even larger project. I accepted the job, and immediately took the team on the right path.

The programming phase went incredibly smooth. Our rough draft was finished a day in advance, and we received the highest grade between the 3 teams in the section. Then we continued to stay on track by finishing the final draft far ahead of the deadline, by establishing in-house deadlines days in advance. While the other groups were working late into the night on the weekend before the final product was due, our team was out enjoying a night on the town. Giving us time to grow as a functional team that enjoys each others company. Being comfortable with each other really helps to make a group succeed.

Now with Winter quarter upon us, the Architectural portion of our building (the most in-depth and time consuming portion) must be completed in a weeks time. Granted this first meeting, which will be in-front of two professional Architects and the owner, is merely a rough proposal so we can take feedback and correct any issues that they see. It doesn't nullify the fact that a high-rise building, much bigger scope than my 4 story apartment building last year, needs to be 75% designed. As soon as I was given the time-frame for this task to be completed, I wasted no time in producing a schedule that broke up the immense project into manageable portions to be completed by various people, and set-up two in-house deadlines so we were well prepared for Wednesday. It is now Thursday, the week before the deadline, and we have significant structure in place. We have our overall concept drawn in Revit, and we are on track to meet all on my in-house deadlines. Even after we switched gears and totally rethought our design once already...

I'm not in anyway trying to be full of myself. I am just amazed at the ability that I have shown during this project. I just may have picked up more than I thought over these past 4 1/4 years at this very expensive school.

NOTE: I am writing this late and after I just got done writing a paper titled "Green Globe vs. LEED", so I am sick of writing well :). Oh and I will be sure to keep you updated on my project; posting pictures of our building weekly so you can stay in touch with how the project is moving along.

Update! The presentation on Wednesday went well. The owner liked our overall design, with a few things that he would like changed. Now that we have a substantial design completed, the next 6 weeks just might be a bit more relaxing.

Construction Unemployment: Getting Better?

ENR (Engineering News Report) just released an article about the state of the construction industry. The news was not what I was hoping for. When looking at the overall unemployment for all industries across the US, the unemployment rate improved from 10.2% in October to 10.0% in November. This may seem underwhelming, but when compared to the projected increase in unemployment it is a relief to see it going in the right direction. There are a few indirect factors that may have produced the turn around, which I wont get into, but none-the-less it puts our minds at a bit of an ease. Well at an ease if your not depending on the construction industry like myself and my entire family. The construction industry has an outstanding unemployment rate of 19.4%. Fairly simple math can determine the unemployment for construction is nearly double that of the rest of the country. Ouch!

The November unemployment was an increase from 18.7% for that of October. Granted this number is not adjusted for seasonal factors, as construction greatly slows in the winter months, but is still not where I want it to be at.

If one were in hopes of getting a job in the construction field, such as myself, the infrastructure field is really the best bet. The government is/was pumping money into public projects to try to stimulate the construction field. Unfortunately the private sector is still in the dumps. I personally built roads and bridges for two years of internship, and it wasn't the direction I wanted to go. I want to build up not out. I might have to bite the bullet however.

It is good to see that overall our economy is starting to turn around, but the unemployment rate is still double what a healthy economy should be at. Then look at construction unemployment which is double our overall, so quadruple a healthy economy. Times are still tough, and I imagine they will be for a few more years yet. I also don't believe the housing market will ever reach the high it had just a few years ago before the collapse.

ENR: Construction Jobless Rate Climbs To 19.4% in November

Review: Terminator Salvation (2009)

After coming back from Thanksgiving break, and visiting the rental store often, the DVD option has been a bit dull for entertainment these past few weeks. This lack of hot titles lead to picking up "Terminator: Salvation" last night. The roommate even brought it back in blue ray, so I was able to view it in HD. I have to say I was skeptical of this one, which is why I did not see it in the theater, but how did it turn out?

Corny and stupid. These two words do a lot to describe the action and things that happen in this movie. Things like a character being shot in the leg by a 50 caliber rifle, and walking on it within hours. Those of you whom do not know what a 50 caliber rifle is, it is a sniper rifle that, in other movies, creates much much more damage. She should not have had a leg left to stand on. Without giving to much away, there were way to many instances where my roommates and I were like "WTF, that could never happen." You may be thinking, "Well they are robots", but these crazy things that defied science were done by humans...

Moving past the ridiculous directing, on which I actually said "this director must be retarded," The plot and story is actually entertaining. If you followed the original Terminators at all, the story alone will keep you watching the movie. The story has so many instances where it pulled from the previous movies, and really made it feel like part of the overall story. If you did not follow the other Terminator movies, then you will not get the same sense of a great story. As a stand alone movie, the plot and story are quite lacking. The first 10 - 15 mins, I asked "What is going on?" It is a fairly hard plot to follow unless you are informed on the overall story, which I had to be reminded occasionally by my roommates.

Overall, I will say this is merely an entertaining movie. By no means can anyone say that it is a good movie. The action was ridiculous (in a bad way), the plot was hard to follow, and the acting by Christian Bale was a bit over the top (not unlike his role in Batman). Only pick this film up if you like unlikely action scenes, or if you followed the Terminator saga.

5/10

Fireflies: HAHA

So I'm playing Modern Warfare 2 with a bunch of friends, and two of them are always talking about listening to this "Fireflies" song. I actually got my first prize, right from Amazon.com, after only two days of doing offers on this site. This is done for the same reason as a junk email. This number may not always work for every site, and in that case put your number in BUT change the last couple numbers a bit. Oh and this site is entirely free. It is a fax/voice mail service. It can't be used with an actual phone.

K7.net

3: Finally you can sign up for Points2Shop! Please click the link at the top of my blog. This way I will get a referral bonus, which you will be able to do once you get an account. For each referral you get a $1 bonus, as well as, 15% of whatever your referralee makes. This does not take points from the referralee, Points2Shop just gives you the points for helping their site grow. It really is a great deal. Please, once you register verify your account and start doing offers because if I refer inactive people my bonuses decrease in value.
4: Doing Offers! This is truly an art, if you want to get the majority of offers approved. Just because you do an offer doesn't mean you get the points. The advertisers have to approve that you completed the offer to their liking. Some offers are easier than others, and some are nearly impossible. This is where this strategy guide really comes in handy. I will fill you all in on the things I have picked up, or read, that will help you to get more offers approved. I will try to include as many pictures as I can. If they are too small, simply click them and they will get bigger.

5: Clearing Your Cookies and Cache! This is an advanced technique that I didn't know about when I first started. This will greatly improve your approval rate, and is incredibly easy to do. What this does in theory, is delete your internet history so you can "trick" these offers into thinking you haven't done similar offers, because some companies have multiple offers and wont approve you if you have done one of theirs before.

Step One: Go to Tools then Clear Recent History. Then click on Main Offer List. Here you will be directed to the list of available offers. Start by doing offers that have high approval ratings, but don't be afraid of ones that say "Low" or "Very Low" approval. These are still very likely to be approved if you know what to do. A nice way to find good offers is to click on the "Recently Approved Offers" to see what has been approved for other members. When doing this method, look for offers that have been approved many many times. Your odds are better when doing offers that have been approved 1000 times compared to 0 times.

Pictured to the left is an example of a decent offer. Some offers will give advice on how to achieve an approval. It's a site that provides items to its consumers at rebates up to 80% off (this value is not fact, I just made it up but it is an educated guess). The catch is it only has one item per day, or one "deal." These deals are of all types, but there seems to be a definite skew towards electronics. I have seen, more often than not, LCD TV's (all sizes), Computers (Lots and Lots), and iPod accessories. If you are not into these types of items, there is still hope. In todays woot-off, which I will get into later, I saw two large bags of pichacios for $18.00. Yes friggin nuts! As well as many other things such as; a grill set, universal remotes, mp3 players (usually not ipods, but there was an ipod touch in the woot-off today), and miscellaneous other items.

Anyway, I have been a loyal woot member for around a year now and try to check the site daily. Usually the items are things that are unnecessary for my life, but are definitely always good items. However, when I see the woot-off lights (as pictured above) I get excited. A woot-off is a great invention of commerce that has boosted this site into an almost consumer cult. The woot-off is a day of deals. Instead of only one deal, the deal will change after a period of time, or until they are all sold out. You have to hurry to purchase something, or you may miss it. This makes for an exciting day. The real catch with a woot-off though is not all the amazing deals. It is in fact a bag-0-crap as termed by the woot community. These bags-o-crap only show up on these amazing woot-off days, and are sold at a low price of $5. Why buy a paper bag for $5? Because you never know what you are going to recieve. The majority of these bags included random things the woot has laying around. I have seen many contain off-brand MP3 players, T-shirts, pens, and other random things. However, usually a few amazing prices get shipped to lucky bag-o-crap purchasers. I am talking about 42" LCD TVs! Check on youtube for proof of these amazing prices. Everyone watches the woot-off diligently for their chance to buy a bag-o-crap, because they get sold out almost instantly! This woot-off sold 1500 bags in just mere seconds...

Over the year time that I have been watching woot.com I have purcahsed a few items. The first major purchase was a Panasonic Computer Sound System. It was not during a woot-off so I had plenty of time to research the item. After watching many videos and reading reviews, I decided to purchase the $400 system for a mere $150. That is a saving of nearly 30%. The system is amazing. It has incredible sound as well as a great bass. The only problem with it was the mechanical volume control on the speakers. It just doesn't work well, so I have resorted to changing it directly on my computer. Oh, and the speakers have lights on them that change with visualizations that show up on music programs like windows media player. It is really cool in the dark, and perfect for setting the mood for anything. I have included a link to a youtube video so you can get a feel for my amazing deal.

The second and third purchase came in today's woot-off. The first thing that caught my eye was a Flip digital camcorder. I thought, hell I could use this to record digital blog posts, and drunk people at parties ;). It looked sleek, modern, and pretty cool. I didn't have a lot of time to research, due to the woot-off, so I bit the bullet and purchased it for $65 compared to competing prices from other sites of $150. There were a few color choices, but I ended up purchasing the orange model, as pictured to the left. The cool thing about this camcorder is there are no wires, no tapes, no nothing. Everything you need is directly on the camcorder. When you are done recording you plug it directly into your USB on your computer and start uploading the video. The one downfall is the space for only 60 mins of recording, but I can't imagine using more than an hour before uploading to a computer. The picture quality isn't perfect in the dark, but looks just fine in good lighting. Oh and this thing is the size of my 3G cell phone! I "could" carry this thing with me at all times, so I don't miss a thing. Maybe I'll capture some amazing video, and get paid to send it to that Spike show "Amazing Videos" or whatever its called. Hell that makes this an amazing investment! Man I love woot, but it can easily make you buy things that you would not have otherwise purchased. Hell its good for the economy, yes?

Flip Manufacturers Page

My last purchase was for my brother. We are both huge gaming fans, so when I saw the Razer Lachesis Gaming Mouse for $30 I instantly texted him to let him know. I would have bought it for myself but I already have a Logitech G5 mouse (right picture), which is a very good mouse. He was in class, so he told me to order it for him. I bought the $80 mouse for $30 and was very pleased with Woot.com once again. For those of you non-gamers out there, I recommend picking up a gaming mouse. You will be amazed at the ease and precision of these mice. They will surpass any mouse you are currently using. Most of the time I am using the G5 as a normal mouse. Rarely do I play FPSs on the PC, so you have no excuse about not picking up this type of mouse, besides that they are on average $20 more than you would pay. It is entirely worth the extra cash though.

One thing about woot, and undoubtedly how they make money, is there "refurbished" items. Refurbished is a term created by marketing to mean a few things. There is no official definition, but it means the item has either been repaired, or simply repackaged. Have you ever brought something back to the store? Maybe it was faulty, maybe just something you didn't really need? Well that is where refurbished comes from. The items get sent back to the manufacturer to be repaired, and they must sell them at a lower price. This is where woot comes in. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of new items on woot as well. Also, you can purchase these refurbished items with ease because the manufacturers back them entirely. Everyone who tries it seems to love it, so I thought I would share it with all of you. Plus Brad keeps bugging me for it... This meal shouldn't take any longer than 30 minutes. Very easy to do, and incredibly delicious.

Ingredients:
1lb Ground Beef
1/2 Small Onion
2 Spoons Sour Cream
Black Pepper
1 small can of Cream of Mushroom
1 Family can of Cream of Chicken
1 Box of Pasta
1 Package of Lipton Onion Soup Mix (It comes in a two package box)

Steps:
1: Boil a large pot full of water. Add Salt as you feel necessary.
2: When water comes to boil add pasta. Cover if you have it.
3: Pasta will take much longer to cook than the rest so maybe wait 5 mins or so before continuing.
4: In a large saucepan (use pam so it doesn't stick); brown hamburger with chopped onions, lipton soup mix, and black pepper all at the same time. Make sure to mix occasionally so to not burn anything. Feel free to add a tiny bit of water to help with the browning.
5: When the pasta is done. Drain the water. Then add the meat mixture into the large pot.
6: Add the Cream of Chicken, Cream of Mushroom, and Sour Cream.
7: Mix really well.
8: Serve.

Note: Black Pepper can be added as necessary. Lots of black pepper is delicious.

Earn Free Stuff Legit!

Skype and K7

I see myself as someone who stays up to date on modern technology, but when it comes to modern trends I am a bit sluggish. I have to admit that when Facebook first showed up for college students only, I thought it was dumb. It was a place for people to spy on others (still is), but it has really turned out to be a powerful force in today's culture. In my current issues class, we discussed how the political contestants, in Palestine, have their own Facebook page and use it to relay their message as well as coordinate protests against their oppressive "democracy." I use the term democracy lightly. I will take credit for projecting Facebook taking over the world, because it has definitely achieved that on a cultural level. However, this entry is not about Facebook. Everyone by now knows what Facebook is. I am going to talk about a few things I just recently discovered firsthand, although I have known about them for awhile.

Skype is a communication website. They allow you to use the internet and your computer to make phone calls to cellular phones (for a small fee per minute) or to other Skype computers (for free). I can't say I have delved into this service much, but I did call myself for free to test it out. I have to say, it was cool.

The reason I even looked into Skype was due to my long distance relationship with my girlfriend. We happen to go to different colleges that are 500 miles apart. It sucks, but we make it work. A while back I bought us a pair of web-cams, so we could occasionally have video conversations instead of the old voice chats. We used AIM for these video chats, but I knew there were better services that specialized in video, instead of just instant messaging. I knew Skype was such a service. This brought me to last night when I was on AIM and video chatting. AIM crashed mid conversation, so I looked further into Skype. I downloaded it, and the interface already got my attention. This service has such a hip, professional feel to it. That modern feel that I love. I look forward to using this program some more.

K7 is less of a mainstream service. This service gives you a phone number that you can use. However, the number is only used as either a fax or a voice mail. If anyone calls these numbers, their message will be emailed to you with audio files, so you can check them on your computer. I am going to mainly use my number as a fax, and as a number when completing Points2Shop offers. I was pretty impressed with this as well. Kinda amazed at what there is out there on the internet. Oh, and this is entirely free to use, so might as well try it.

K7
Skype

Fantasy Football: Week 7

I finally got back into a league this year, after being absent for a few years. Being in a league really makes everything more exciting. My true competitive nature comes out. This year sucks however!

Everything started out ok. I lost a game, then won a game; but I soon found myself losing often. I lost a game were I was projected to win by 70 points. I ended up losing by 60 points. That's a 130 point swing! What do these sports guys get paid to do? They obviously can't do projections accurately.

My roster has maybe one original player left on it from draft day. I went by the pros projections during draft , and look where it got me. Each week I analyze my team, and look for free agents to pick up based on their projections. This strategy hasn't been working very well, and I have been getting terribly unlucky. More often then not, the players that were projected to get 20+, that I just picked up, end up getting me zero points. Blah...

However, I am writing this today because I just may pull out a win after being on a five game losing streak. I am playing the 50% team managed by Mr. Daniel Anderson (My little brother). He sure is a smack talker, so it would be nice to kick his arse. As you can see to the left, I am a mere 10 points ahead of him. He still has his defence to play and his WR has 12 mins in the 4th, but I think I might just pull this off. Wish me luck. I would like to win the $80 for first place. Just need to win all the left over games!

Update: I lost 116 to 111! His defense scored way more points than they should have, 22. Damn I have some terrible luck this year.

Points2Shop

Points2Shop

I have found myself very distracted by the internet lately. Distracted by the hopes of receiving free goodies. It definitely sounds too good to be true, as there is no such thing as a free lunch, but I have actually received a prize! It first began when I was meandering my favorite graphic design/gaming forum, gamebattles.com. I stumbled across a thread about a new site in beta that is giving out prizes for just being active and helping the site get off its feet. This site is called Lockerz.com, and after watching some testimonials on youtube.com it looked fairly promising. I signed up and gave it a try. Sent out lots of invites to friends, and got them excited about it as well.

Things havn't gone as smooth as I had hoped with Lockerz.com. I have not been entirely turned off yet, as their is hope of being rewarded. The reason things are not going well is because the prizes are always out of stock. At first it wasn't a problem because I didn't have enough points, but I have now accumulated enough points to get a free Xbox 360 game. I am sticking with it, because Lockerz.com promisses to restock their inventory sometime in November just as they did in October.

This brings me to the point of the restocking. It was a absolute mess in October, and I don't see it being much different in November. It was a mess because Lockerz.com told everyone well in advance that they were restocking at a certain day and time, so on the day of the restock over one million members tried to access the site at the same time. You can imagine how slow the site crawled. The worst part was, there could not have been many prizes, because all the prizes were out of stock before you could even open the page. I don't have high hopes for November, but I realize that Lockerz.com is not a free prize website. They are trying to create a hip community for retail and entertainment. This is just a promotional thing to get their name out there, although they will always have their PTZ system. Which reminds me, its an invite only site so if you do want to check it out let me know and Ill send you an invite.

Although Lockerz.com was a disappointment, I found a legit, prize only, website called Points2Shop. I actually found this on facebook through people complaining about Lockerz. This site is all about earning points through completing online offers. These offers are free to complete, but you do have to fill in information like; email, address, phone number, etc. Although I use my real name and address, I do have a junk email and a junk cell number that I use to get these offers completed. This has worked out very well so far. I already have a prize being shipped to my house as we speak. I started small with only a rechargeable Xbox 360 battery, because I needed one.

This site is also cool because they have varying member levels and things to do. The longer you stick around the more chances you have of getting points easier. Once you become a higher rank than "new" you can start buying tickets into a game, with your points, that gives you the possibility of winning 100x that many points. It works similar to the lottery. I just started getting into this, and if I win just one time I will turn 100 points into like 30,000 points... I keep my fingers crossed.

How the points and prizes system works is very simple. You earn say 30 points on an offer. 100 points is equal to $1. Once you get enough points you spend them on Amazon.com. This means that the prizes will never be out of stock like lockerz. It also means you can get anything your heart desires if you put in the time to get enough points. I was on their forums and noticed that one guy got a brand new PS3. That's like 300,000 points so it must have taken him a long time.

I think Ill close by saying, check out both of these sites and let me get the referring bonus! To join Points2Shop click the below link, and to join Lockerz.com send me an email at jandyman05@gmail.com.

Thanks for reading my blog. I hope that I have opened your eyes to new things.

Josh

Points2Shop
