Good morning dear people. Here I am again, after months of being AWOL on here. Truly, I have been as busy as they come and for the life of me, I have not been able to type a line. But enough of my excuses. Even I know they are as watery as badly made akamu.

As I say to nearly everyone who speaks to me for more than 10 consecutive minutes, I have a wonderful baby sister. She's young, intelligent and wise beyond her years. Indeed, she's the only one who manages to completely, entirely, absolutely blow my mind...literally. While I was home yesterday, grumbling about the dishes that needed to be done after a long work day, she sent me a mail with a quirky, compelling little piece she wrote. I love it and I hope you will too. Here it goes:

There are many things I know

Even more that I do not know

Some I think I know

Only deciding to know can begin to stop it

Stop what exactly....I do not know

But I know if we knew as much as we should

There would be no bombings

No unecessary evil

Good evening dear ones,

I could come up with a tub-full of half baked reasons why I have not so much as typed a "full stop" here in 5 long months but they would be just that - half baked.

Now that we have exchanged pleasantries, here's what is on my mind today and has been for a while. How is it that we, (Nigerians) have formed the habit of making jokes of the most horrid and unpleasant situations? I mean, are we so shallow and dense that we feel nothing or what we feel does not stay with us for long or do we just totally lack understanding?

Let's take a look at this year. First, it was the removal of fuel subsidy by our very own GEJ (side eye) and all sorts of pictures and joke lines went viral on all social media over the very cruicial matter, taking away from the seriousness of the situation. Then came more Boko Haram brutality and ofcourse, we went on to make fun of it even as fellow human beings were gasping their last breaths while others prayed for mercy. Then came the Mubi mass murder. and now, the very gruesome and open murder of the four UNIPORT students by the Aluu community.

I had seen some jokes already but this one was the most asinine of them all and really got me "NYSC official: You have been posted to ALUU for your service. AKPORS: O O Abeg Sir, space still dey North?".. HOW DOES ANY SANE PERSON FIND IT IN HIS/HER SICK, DERANGED AND SUBSTANDARD MIND TO FIND ANYTHING REMOTELY FUNNY ABOUT THESE MURDERS??? As if that were not enough, a number of people are tweeting and facebooking more tasteless jokes. How then do we expect people to take us seriously when we do not even take ourselves seriously? How do we demand rights when we are first in line to strip ourselves of the very right to demand rights?I understand that people have their differnt ways of coping with pressure and maintaining sanity but a bit of sensitivity always helps.

IF YOU HAVE NOTHING CONSTRUCTIVE TO SAY, KEEP YOUR FOUL MOUTHS SHUT! We must not always have something to say. Even the Bible says "Better to be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt". There's a huge difference between being strong and resillient and being plain stupid.

The Boss of Dry Jokes.

Hello there, how did your day go today? Hopefully not half as crappy as mine because mine has been one long ,long ,long, long, (did I say LONG) drag!

Anyway, I was wondering how it is that we absolutely have to laugh at the boss’ jokes even when they are drier than the Sahara desert and what’s funny is how quickly the straight faces come back in once the boss turns his/her back! That indeed is when I get my good laugh. The dramatic switch from "fainting from laughter" to "can't even be bothered" is always comic.

A senior manager walked into the office today and as is the norm for him, he tried to be funny and cracked a painfully dry joke; one we all knew was just terrible. Yet, everyone laughed so hard, some managed to produce a few tears of “joy” when what they are most likely thinking was “please go let us work jor before I beat you over the head with my keyboard”. (ok, maybe not that violent but close). Well, I did crack…my face did from trying so hard to join the laughter. Is it possible for any one so dry to actually believe they are even remotely close to being funny? I mean, they have to know in their hearts that they are dry, right? It beats me!

Truth be told, I do know why we laugh. It’s so we get or remain in their good graces; laying the ground work that promotion or for that bonus or just so they don’t go out of their way to frustrate us at work for the rest of our stay there. But then, some of us laugh too much! A seriously high level of eye service. Whatever the reason hard we laugh, I have to say it’s a huge pain- one we have to bear so long as we have dry bosses. *brushes off a tear*

In recent times, it has been interesting to watch the changes, growth and recycling of fashion and style. Women have returned to the trends and styles that helped our mamas’ reel in our dear old dads-we find ourselves spotting red matte lips, bright colored tops and jeans, beautiful long braids, short, stretchy, figure hugging dresses, flowing patterned skirts, tights and the like. In fact, some of us look like we popped straight out of Alex Zitto's Walakolombo video (In a good way).

The men's fashion on the other hand has taken on a rather radical turn. Counting down from the more recent trends, first came the straight cut pants, the neat jackets and shirts and I thought "hmm...how nice, now we can cite a nice lean body a mile off"- A sight for sore eyes, I must say. Then came the V necked Tees. I mean "cleavage" showing V necked Tees that make any wearer look not so male, that is, if you could ignore the mass of ugly chest hair on display. I’m not even going to mention the bright colors the clothes now come in.

Then came the parade of men in downright skinny pants, (and I have often wondered where their man parts go since the pants are so unbelievably tight). To make it even worse, the ones with beer guts, fat behinds and love handles perfect for infants to sit on,have decided it would be a good idea to follow the trend and squeeze into boy sized clothing *GAGS*. The more daring ones pair the V necks with the skinny pants. That, coupled with the funny gait men generally have and the added awkwardness of wearing such
ridiculously tight pants and you have yourself a clown for your child’s 5^th birthday party! PLEASE, IF YOU ARE NOT A ROCKSTAR, OR WALKING THE RUN WAY IN PARIS FOR MARC JACOBS' MEN COLLECTION ,YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING IN SUCH PANTS, HOT BODY OR NOT!

As if all these were not enough, I saw someone wearing what looked suspiciously like tights. Yes, tights, leggings!!! And homeboy was feeling all kinds of cool plus his “GUGGI” sunglasses at 8pm. Oh ye gods of fashion and style, what have we done to deserve this? Please take away this plague and we promise to be good!!! I fear to think what’s next. Skirts? Platform pumps? If I were to have a date who showed up in such annoying get up, date’s over in 5!

Whatever happened to Polos and regular straight jeans? Where did the dignified tailored suits in conservative colors go? What happened to proper leather loafers and sneakers? Who took away the non-cleavage/chest hair displaying tees? I want them back, that my eyes may live a long healthy life!

This here is a delicate subject and may sound offensive depending on your perspective of issues like this. Seeing as it is becoming quite common (sadly), it may as well be discussed. Please note that I, Koko, am neither for nor against. This is not a personal opinion.

Ok here it is…

There are a lot of women who for personal reasons, religious, cultural …decide to wait for marriage before doing the deed and after the wedding, realize that their partners have no desire to consummate the marriage seeing as they prefer men or they do have the desire but they just cannot because the parts needed do not quite function as they should. Usually, the lady is distraught! Confused! Disappointed! The man…well, it is logical to assume that a man with such problems would know he has them even before the wedding so this would not be coming as news to him, which would mean he kept his “news” a secret from the soon to be Mrs. Distraught.

Now here’s what I and any number of other people probably are thinking too…

Is it right to try out a prospective partner’s sexual functionality before marriage or wait and hope for the best, which may turn out to be the worst? Indeed, is it a function of right and wrong?

If a woman marries a man who she finds out won’t consummate the marriage because he prefers people of the same sex as he is, or he has a health or emotional issue and cannot, what would be the reasonable next step for the woman to take-Divorce? Would that not be going against the very beliefs that kept her from trying out her partner before entering a would be lifelong bond with him?

Some people have come up with the argument that there’s more to a marriage than sex and thus it could be forfeited. Indeed, there is a whole lot more to it but it is safe to say that it was put in the equation as a constant, not a variable for a very valid reason, yes?

From articles on the web and in magazines to real life stories, it would seem that there is an increasing number of women who have been and are getting caught in this web and are at a loss as to what or how to fix it (if it were at all fixable), meaning there are more men who have these issues! Or have they always been there and women are only just getting up the nerve to speak up about it?

What’s your take on this oh, so sour pudding women are getting served in larger and larger pieces these days?

WORK "LOVE". TO DO OR NOT TO DO?

Now here's a short story.

A single and not unattractive young woman works for an organisation. A few months after joining the organisation, she meets a male colleage, a superior. Sparks fly, they decide to date and as many relationships go,irrespective of the environment,it ended not so long afteer. The young woman in question, has been labelled all sorts in the orgasnisation simply because she dated a co-worker. Now she's said to be loose and spoilt and what not.

I have heard these things happen. Indeed, many people have found partners in their places of work. Some have led to marriage and others have not, again, as is the case with any relationship.

Here's what gets me. Why does the woman get to bear all sorts of silly side talk and the man, no one notices him. How does one conclude that a woman is bad because she dated a co-worker, especially when the said relationship does not end in marriage? In reality, dating someone you have to see at home and at work, with other people looking on and waiting for the "outcome" (since they do not have lives of their own), can take its toll on a relationship.Not many people are able to handle this pressure. Bearing that in mind, is it wrong to date a colleage? Do you decide to not try with someone who you think may be good for you solely because you work together?

Personally, I think it's a personal decison that should take the same kind of thought and consideration it would when a boy meets a girl outside of work. It may not be an overly smart idea but then, who's to say what will be? It should not concern who ever else works in the organisation except the comapany has a rule against it. As for the simple minded folk who are bitter and dissatisfied with their own lives and have made it their duty to watch and wish others ill, well, they should probably spend more time fixing their lives and there just might be a chance of them being happy.

An Inconclusive piece!

"Husbands are scarce" ," I can't find a woman to marry". I hear statements along these lines all the time and yet, weekend after weekend, the roads are flooded with "about to wed" cars, or I'm attending a friend's wedding, buying one gold and burgundy aso-ebi or a blue one. Why then do we keep saying "no husband, no wife for market" ? Who then are the people getting married to? Or dare I say "what then"?

The really interesting thing is most of the weddings I have seen in recent times have been of relatively young people, with the females usually between the ages 22- 25 and the men a couple of years older. Now, this has me wondering- what is the ideal age for a woman/man to get married? What qualifies her/him as being ready? Are we to believe there is no minimum age for marriage in these modern times? Are the people who get married early ready for the "marriage" and not just the fancy wedding ceremony which really is just that- a ceremony? Aside from social pressure (which technically, should not be an issue for a 22 year old female or any female at that) and the only too frequently used word "love", what motivates people to enter into marriage especially at an early age? Bearing in mind the rising rate of divorce , what keeps the ones who remain married together? A lack of a better option?

This is a rather inconclusive piece. I know not the answers to these questions. Help me!

The very thought worries me!!!

Today,I think I heard the dumbest thing yet this year. I was so shocked at the absolute lack of common sense on public display I very nearly called the fellow to order but for fear of my life ( you will see why soon) I quietly quickened my steps and went on my way. Here's what I heard;

Two men were walking along the road and one of them brought up the Boko Haram issue. After a bit of argument, one said " The government of Nigeria doesn't understand Nigerians. For instance, Boko Haram is fighting against western education in Nigeria and all Nigerians are supposed to join in the fight!! Western education has had no positive impact in the life of the common man! All of Nigeria should join Boko Haram in its fight!!"

My jaw literally hit the dusty ,harmattan floor at the level of "mumuness".(I'm sure you see now why quickly walking away was a seriously wise decision. Couldn't be too sure if homeboy was packing something beneath his shirt) . How does one think that way? How does any sane person believe such horrid destruction is going to bring about any solution let alone want to be a part of it? And really," western education has added no value to the common man????". Is that statement based on fact or fiction? Not to say western education is the sure or only way to success but would it not be true to say that it does have its very positive uses?

If even one more Nigerian has the same ideas as the man above,then we have a more serious disease than we know. Heaven help us!!!

WHY ARE NIGERIANS QUICK TO CONDEMN ALL THINGS NIGERIAN? I have been taking a few training courses in the past few weeks and I have had different instructors; one Nigerian, one white American. During a short break a few days ago, a couple of "lunch mates" decided it would be really cool to trash the Nigerian facilitator and sing about how great an instructor the white guy was. There was talk of how many of them would have made "A" grades in school if they had had him as their instructor. Then I asked "what is the basis of this comparism"? "Because he is white" , they replied. I felt like I had been knocked over the head with a hoe!!

Why does a person's skin colour have to be a basis for judgement on intelligence and efficiency? You are either good at what you do or you are not, be you black,white,green,orange or magenta!! I am no racist, but I don't hear any white people saying blacks are better than they are so why on earth do many Nigerians blindly jump to the conclusion that the white skin makes for a better person than the black skin? I like the black instructor's methods as much as the white instructor's, and if any comparisms were to be made, I'd like to think we could be wise enough to make those comparisms based on genuine substance.

This is just one case out of hundreds that I have witnessed. What is the cause of this seeming lack of value for ones' self Nigerians have? Do we blame this on our "leaders" ? On ourselves? On Nigeria? It kills me to see and hear these things especially from people who could be considered literate and "enlightened". A little reagard and self respect goes a long way. I have come to realise that people will call you what you wish them to call you. If you call your dog Bingo, Bingo all your neighbours shall call it. If you call yourself "Valueless", Valueless your neighbours shall call you!

I saw this female recently and as usual I got angry. Here's why; she was dressed VERY inappropriately!! I said "inappropriately" not "indecently". There's such a thing as "body type"- what style of clothes,shoes or hair fit. For instance, if you have "not too good" legs, why expose them constantly? If u have broad shoulders and narrow hips, what on earth are you doing in a pencil skirt and a very fitted shirt? There's a huge difference between being confident and comfortable with one's body and having no idea what looks good on you, in other words, being a JOKER! Some might argue that it's their own personal sense of style . Well dear, TOO BAD!!!

There are things that fit and things that just do not! (I cant emphasize it enough).No offence meant to my lovely female folk,but dang!!! Do you have a mirror? Or do you have friends who do not like you and ooh and aah over you even when they know you look no where near an "ooh" let alone an "aah" . I assume we all have parts of our bodies we like less than the others.I certainly do.The idea is to down play the negative and enhance the positive. If the styles and patterns of clothes in a season do not fit,DO NOT WEAR THEM! It's the trend does not necessarily mean you will look trendy in it.Skinny jeans and jeggings aren't meant for all,neither are mini dresses .There's something for every one!

Disney Lied !!!

Fairy tales are one of my favourite things to watch. I have seen a countless number of them, from Cinderella to Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin, Enchanted, Pocahontas,The Little Mermaid...Oh love, cherish me!!!

There's a common end to all these tales -A happy ending! Happily ever after! When I watch them,it reaffirms my belief in romance and true love and happiness and peace and goodness and....*pheeeww* But then,I turn off my TV and reality hits (again).

Why is the reality of romance not nearly as glorious as what Disney has got us believing ? I think Disney lied! I don't see that many Jasmines and Aladdins taking their carpets for spins over 3rd Mainland Bridge, nor do I see Prince Philip slaying the dragon to lovingly rouse Princess Aurora from her hundred-year slumber. Shall I blame this on the presence of Maleficient the witch? I think not.

The girls are always perfect; dainty ,soft-spoken beauties with clear skin. Not even one pimple! Ah!! That is just serious "ojoro" !They get their charming, handsome,rich, loving, caring princes. Even the Beast ,despite being a beast, was very wealthy and he didn't stay a beast! He got very handsome after dear Belle wept all over him (*rolling eyes* don't I just wish it were that easy. I have a store of tears-salty and sugary too. All I need now is some magic)!

Find me a magic wand and a couple of fairies!!!

TO BE 5 AGAIN

Today, I got a call from one of my BFFs and we spoke at length about everything from guys,to family , to jobs, to marriage...even other friends! Each topic in itself is inexhaustible as while you are trying to understand one and deal with it, the other is sitting on your back awaiting its turn to cause you headache! Assuming you are lucky enough to not have them all sitting on your head at the same time o.

I concluded that I have got to find some wise old wizard to cast a spell on me that I may return to being 5 years old again (blame this on season 1 of LEGEND OF THE SEEKER and 3 of MERLIN). But really, I think life was much easier way back when my most important worries were what my mum would make for dinner, what cartoon I liked best, how to get the bigger portion of the meat when I shared with my sister! Not how to pay bills, handle a difficult boss, find "Mr Right"! *sigh* oh what I wouldn't give to be just that age again.

I want to dance naked in the rain again!! Play with dolls and stuff grass in their open,plastic mouths, quarrel with a classmate and be over it seconds! I want to buy lolli, and baba dudu, and "ice cream". I want to play "mummy and daddy" (innocently ooooo!!), play suwe and 10 10, tinko tinko and mr macaroni .I want to make babies from sheets from my 2A and 2D notebooks!
Ahhhhh...to be 5 again...The simplicity we probably all took for granted because we didn't understand that we'd wish for those days again. I love my life but to be a child again,even for one day, I'd dash you my bb and laptop sef!

Labour Vs Miracles

Hello dolls. I’m sorry I have not been here in a while. Been rather busy. Ok, I lied. Partially. I have not had too much to say of late. I think my mind was overloaded and had to reboot. Anyway, here I am again. I recently had the privilege of listening to a powerful speaker talk about labor and the dignity to be found in it and after some minutes of listening to him, he had reaffirmed what I already knew – WORK FOR WHAT YOU WANT! (It did not hurt in the least to be reminded of this though).

Well, it got me thinking again of how many of us hope for “miracles” to happen in our lives while warm our benches. Life doesn’t work like that, I have come to realize. One has got to get up and do something about his or her life to make it how they want it be. In earnest, it’s a daunting task; what with all the “negative forces” all over the place. “Negative forces” here could be the socio-economic climate, political, emotional, mental, physical or spiritual state. It could be anything that stands in the way of what you want! It’s left for you to get up and move and if these forces succeed in knocking you down a time or ten, you have got to get back up and keep going!! That’s the sure fire way to get what you want. This I know from experience.

Twiddling your thumbs and waiting for miracles does not fetch you those miracles. Doing something that is in line with the miracles you want is the first and most critical step towards getting it. We all have varying wants and needs. They do not necessarily have to be financial- they could be physical, emotional or any other “al” possible, but you have to up and do something about it first and then God will make those miracles happen for you.

PS. Even I know that most things are easier said than done, this one included (the voice of experience again), but the alternative is no alternative at all, if you ask me.

We’ve got to make things happen for ourselves now!

LESS TOTTERING; MORE STRUTTING!

Here I was the other day hanging out with a pal somewhere in Lagos, and in came a rather beautiful young woman. She had it- the skin radiating like the sun ( even at 11pm), the neat LBD, the glossy lips, the hair, the tote and the shoes... the shoes... the shoes. My Miss Beautiful tottered in on a pair of heels high enough to climb on while clearing cobwebs from your ceiling, and made her way over to a table and very gingerly perched on the edge of a chair.

My eyes tracked Miss Beautiful's slow and labourious progress across the room -I found this amusing. But then, who am I to judge? I am indeed shamelessly guilty of marching around in alarmingly high heels. For me, there's almost no option.The right pair heels can transform a tired and ordinary outfit into one fit for an evening with Bon Jovi on stage. (Okay, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration). All I'm saying is, high heels are an all time classic! Almost as much as a well fitting pair of blue jeans. And I am not giving up on them!

There are a few tried and trusted ways to make life on heels easier though. Here we go:

1. Make an effort to moisturise your feet before wearing shoes-this eases friction and the less friction there is between your feet and and the insides of your shoes, the more comfortable you will feel.NO PAIN, NO CHAFFED SKIN.

2. Make a note to buy shoes with platforms. This keeps the balls of your feet and your heels on the same level and thus, you have better balance- LESS TOTTERING AND MORE STRUTTING!

3. The best things rarely come easy and are usually worked at. PRACTICE! PRACTICE!! PRACTICE!!! Wear your shoes around your house regulary till you can feel comfortable in your shoes and are less likely to trip over your own feet in public, (Note "less likely". Even runway models fall off their shoes sometimes).

4. Buy shoes that are your real size. Not bigger, not smaller. I, better than anyone understands this. (P.S. this is me being hypocritical as I am guilty of buying shoes a size too small just because I love'em and can't let'em go).

5. There are shoes with mid-heels that won't torture you. They are beautiflly designed and really comfortable while seemingly giving you the "elegance" that high heels give .( "elegance" is in quotation mark because I see a lot of tottering these days and that does not exactly equal elegance).

6. IF YOU REALLY CAN NOT COPE WITH THE HIGH HEELS, STICK WITH LOW TO FLAT SHOES. IT DOES NOT MAKE YOU ANY LESS CHIC. ITS A SMALL PRICE TO PAY FOR NOT LOOKING LIKE A DOLT WHEN YOU ARE OUT!

In all, a babe is a babe is a babe.

When I'm governor...

I like to write. I like to write does not necessarily mean I “know” how to write (sadly). Like you have never wished you were something and dreamt and fantasized about said “thing” so much that you actually become it (well in your mind anyway). I’d say I’m more of a talker (if such a thing did exist). Right now, I need to rant; so one rant coming up>>>

At the risk of sounding “un-nice”, has the “stink rate” spiked or did my nose just become more sensitive or even worse, is it my nose itself that smells?(Good grief!! But what else can I say?). I have analysed and re-analysed this and I can’t come up with any answer. Why would any fellow born of a woman or man( one can’t be too sure in these times) step out of his or her home and have the nastiest stench this side of the dust and seem not to have a care at all?Or have the odour from his/her mouth “burn holes in the air” and be seemingly oblivious to this grand event?Am I to believe they do not know that they hand out a huge and unwanted gift to the people they will definitely come in contact with on any given day? Where and how then do they practice “be thy brothers’ keeper”? If you can’t keep your brother from keeling over from having inhaled toxic smells coming off you, where and how then shall thou keep thy brother?

Being clean, staying fresh is not a fashion statement. It’s simply hygiene. No sphere of life encourages bad odour coming off of a human. It’s extremely offensive and almost physically painful. Its torture!! Emotional and mental torture for those unfortunate enough to be anywhere near Mr and Mrs Stinky. Wearing fragrance on an already smelling body only compounds the problem which already has a long complicated formula. When I’m governor, I shall install mobile shower booths in corners of my city. No, really. I will. This is not a campaign line. I’m pledging to do this on my honour. In the meantime, here are a few “commandments” that you should keep on pain of death:

1. You shall take a shower with soap and sponge at least twice a day (yes , Mrs Ike your primary 3 class teacher always said so but it seems you missed it so here it is again).

2. You shall wear a mild fragrance.
