A little hissy fit with a BIG finish!

Happy May 1st!

We are bustling around here in major preparation for our Grand Opening on May 19th.

**My mind just registered MAY 1st and thus the real countdown begins.....tick, tick, tick....**

I remember promising to share many sneak peeks until "the big day".....but alas life continues to spin and when I finally land in bed each night I sigh in exhaustion and have little creative words to utter. Let's not even mention the energy needed to edit photos!
(Am I the only one that cannot stand Picmonkey?)

Hmmmmmmm, how was that for a glimpse at pathetic?

Actually, a lot has been happening but I kid you not when I tell you that we rise almost daily at 4AM and fall into bed each night sometime before the clock strikes midnight. And we have been doing that since January 5th....but really, who has hardly noticed?

I'm not here to complain and actually I am not really complaining.....more like whining.....just a bit.

*SMIRK*

Restored~Home Boutique & Studio is a love/hate relationship on a daily basis.....

Love to paint, love to decorate, love to train with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, love to meet new customers.....

hate to paint the ENTIRE outside of the building, hate to shovel a gravel driveway, hate to clean windows, hate to pay the bills.....etc.

You get it....I know you do.
This girl just wants to HAVE FUN!

Moving right along.......sorry, I am here alone in the shoppe today and needed a shoulder to virtually cry on for just a minute. I'm better now.....thank you.

Let's see what I can dig up to show you......

I knew that I wanted a unique piece to be used for our checkout counter. I perused Pinterest for days looking for inspiration. Seriously.....have you been there? Oui Vey, I could stay on Pinterest for hours and not even realize.......you know, I know you do.

So, this is what we came up with.

YUCK! I know....go ahead and say it....

I wanted to spit on it!

Let's just say....NOT the picture in my head.

So we tweeked and pounded and manipulated and played.....

*translation = screamed, cried, kicked and cursed (no....not me....)

And this is what we came up with.

Not too shabby for a fit throwing, Annie Sloan Chalk Paint slingin', crying, screaming and spittin' fiesty Texas gal!

(Ok, I confess Mr Restored~Home had a part to play also but I only let him throw a small hissy fit.)

Good Tuesday Afternoon, Homies!

I did promise you some "sneak peeks" of our new boutique/studio space, right?

So today you will get to meet "Angelica."

Angelica was aptly named when my sister-in -law, Melissa, set out on a journey to find the perfect name for the centerpiece of our little cottage. She is the main player as she will house, display and protect our beloved paint.....Annie Sloan Chalk Paint!

I actually searched for a few months for this Pièce de résistance and was thrilled when I finally found her.

She, of course, has a very French background and has the loveliest of accents.....she just needed a little tweek to accentuate her legs and her curves and her adorning crown.

(Heck, I wish paint and wax could do that for me!

Maybe I should ask Annie about that. I mean, this paint sticks to almost anything...could work....)

Well, enough of my descriptive terms.

Here she is "before."

See.....she is lovely.

You may be surprised by a few of the changes that we made. But remember, Angelica was chosen to display our paint and it is rather hard to display behind doors. Initially I was going to remove the doors and repurpose them since they are GO-orgeous.....but I could not get past the detail that they add. The cabinet without the doors just wasn't.the.same.

We have a local friend...shout out to ya, Crea.....who has amazing woodworking skills and so we drug Crea over to help us out. He cut out the recessed panels in the doors and added shelving to the inside.

WOW! Now we are talkin'!

Next came color. It seems to me that I lamented over that choice the most.

I began with the thought of Louis Blue.....made my way over to Old Violet.....even thought about a custom color.....but in the end decided on Country Grey and Old White.

Old White is still my number one seller. It requires no explanation.

Country Grey is not grey (or is it gray?)....you can take the naming convention up with Annie....she is aware and I think, finds it most amusing that we Americans expect Country Grey to be grey/gray.

LOL.....seriously, it is the.MOST.stunning color. Putty like, if you ask me....abso-tively...

poso-lutely PERFECT for Angelica.

Incidentally, in the last week I have sold more Country Grey than any other color in the shoppe.

Guess it pays to advertise.

"Restored~Home" is finally OPEN!

Hello! (hello, hello, hello.......)

Holy pete it has been a long, long time, huh?

I have finally come up for air and I am back!

If you are new here let me kind of give you an update.

About 4 months ago we decided to open a "stand alone" studio to retail our Annie Sloan Chalk Paint from and teach workshops in.
We found a location (God kind of dropped it in our lap really) and began the journey of a lifetime.

SERIOUSLY!

Here is our "Before" picture.....just wait until you see the "After."

It has evolved, and evolved and evolved and we are now a BOUTIQUE and studio and residing in a most adorable little cottage in the heart of Alvin, TX.

(well, we are still working on the "adorable" part....but we are getting there...LOL)

We began work on the building the first week in January and I sort of "fell off the map", if you will, on my blog. Honestly, something had to give and it was my blog. 12-18 hour days of hard physical work leaves little room for mental creativity! I am telling you that it was NOT for "lack of content".....oh nooooooo....I have more content that I could share in a year.....and I will be catching you up to speed. I mean, who doesn't love a story that involves a major water leak on a Friday night at 10pm the night before my first workshop? Did I mention that we had no idea where the water main was to shut it off AND it was gushing all over my newly installed (THAT DAY) kitchen floor? ARGH.

Or how about a bathroom water leak that caused us to tear out a wall (that we were not planning to tear out) that broke the porcelain sink (that we were not planning to replace).....that caused us to repurpose a dresser into a vanity with the most lovely of antique bowls for a sink story?

I do just LURVE happy accidents......

This is before the "happy" water leak.....

It is SO MUCH BETTER now!

We have experienced the good, the bad and the ugly on this journey....water leaks, glass breakage, bugs, power issues, and even a bloody head and broken arm......all in a days work.

We believe that the worst is behind us and brighter...much brighter....days are ahead.

We are now planning our "Grand Opening" for May 19, 2012.
(maybe 2013 is more realistic....)

So hang with me a bit more and get ready for stories and pics and fun!

It's coming and when I get started I may have a hard time stopping!
Mostly, I have missed sharing and interacting with my friends/readers here.....you are all so dang sweet!

Thank you for all of the emails that I've recieved asking if we were okay....still alive, etc.

All is well at "Restored~Home"......what a well named shoppe, don't you think?

2012 has started off with a BANG!

A dream of mine was dropped right into my lap!

Restored~Home

has some new diggs......

We are not "officially" open for business yet......much renovating/remodeling going on.

We are experiencing the "snowball effect."

You know what I mean.....we start one thing and that leads to another and another and another.....

Renovating an entire small house = $$$$$

The look on the faces of two 10 year old boys when told they could demolish 2 walls with sledgehammers = PRICELESS

Our new home may not look so special right now but when we get done it will be divine!

Of course, I have BIG plans.....paint (duh!), landscape.....the list goes on and on.....

(can you just envision gorgeous window boxes overflowing with petunias in the Spring?)

I'm not going to share our "Before" pics until I can share some "After" pics....

suffice to say that our new little spot has great bones and huge potential and we are going to

make.her.shine!

We are holding Annie Sloan Chalk Paint workshops there....in fact, we had two this past weekend.

Good Morning Homies!

I have been working a lot of custom pieces lately but have not had the time to post them.

This one has been one of my favs!

(and yes, now I need to have one of these for myself.....sorry, that is the nature of this business.)

I love "before and afters" that really are dramatic.

I think this is one of them....

Lovely curves and in fantastic shape....

I just adore this style.

The antiqued finish is actually two-toned.

You cannot really see that here.

Some minor age-worn distressing.

Really love the lines.

The look is amazing......but the feel is soft and smooth.

Thanksgiving Greetings from Texas!

I refuse to think about Christmas yet....well, atleast not in the decor department....for my home anyway. C'mon people....we still have Thanksgiving! Let's ~~get through~~, errrrr, enjoy one holiday at a time. The "Christmas Kick Off" for my family is the day AFTER Thanksgiving......we put up the tree and decorate the house inside and out....fa la la la laaaaaaaa....well, you know....so please, World, let's celebrate Thanksgiving and then begin the Christmas festivities.....
(climbing down off my soapbox now.... no offense to anyone intended....all in good fun!)

Before I get to Claire I will tell you that whatever was in here

Go ahead and oogle.....she is breathtaking...

(never in my wildest dreams did I think I would one day describe an armoire as "breathtaking"...)

I am in love...yes, I know....again....

The texture on this piece is just amazing.

I am still contemplating using some dark wax but I have not as of yet.

I love the ornate hardware against the rough texture.....

The doors actually lock with a cute skeleton key.

I opted for painted hardware again....I just think it looks so beautiful.

I love white detailing.

Check out this really unique cubbie set up inside!

I plan to get some wicker baskets to put my things in and still keep it looking neat and clean.

Please ignore the wall and trim paint colors. The trim will all be Bright White soon.....and the walls, although freshly painted by moi.....I'm not really feelin' this blue anymore (Rainwashed by Sherwin Williams).....I'm thinking maybe a soft Antique White.

Any suggestions?

This room is still a work in progress but I am one step closer with the addition of Claire.

I've said it a million times....nothing distresses like Annie Sloan Chalk Paint...

It is the best paint, hands down.

Have I inundated you with pictures? I just SOOOOOO wanted you to really experience this piece.....the texture, the style and the colors.....probably one of my very favorite pieces to work on.

Change of plans....

I have a little something that I picked up for myself.....

I am just dying to show you what I have....

Can y'all guess what it is?

I have been looking for one for awhile now.

And I almost.....almost, but not quite....feel guilty because it will be the second piece that I have kept for myself in less than a month....

(I will certainly get over it!)

So pray for sunshine so I can pull her out and snap a few "before" pics......

The other piece that I kept for myself is this French armoire......remember?

Well, she is done and better than ever!

I think I'll make you wait until tomorrow to see her too.....

Once upon a time....

There was a very ~~ugly~~ "less than attractive" china cabinet that sat all alone in my storage unit.

You see, I had bought her as part of a set.....a lovely dining set.....but in the end I only had room for the table and chairs and so this sweet little china cabinet was exiled to a dark, dingy, storage unit.

(She's not really little but it just fit in my story.....)

See how sad she looks......

Pure potential! Yet, there she sat.....all alone (well, not really alone either but...)

day after day after day.......

One day I got a phone call from a lady who was opening a dress consignment shoppe and was looking for a couple of pieces to use for display.

We met and came up with a plan that required a shelving unit (got one!), a French dresser (got one!) and a lovely china cabinet that we could repurpose.....GOT ONE!

I ran (no, not really either) down to the storage unit and snapped a few pictures of........hmmmmmm, let's call her "Cinderella"...........

I zapped the pictures of Cinderella off to my new friend and she was hooked.....she wanted to use Cinderella in her store!

It was a fine day in the neighborhood!

I ran right back to the storage unit (see previous comment about my story embellishments....)...loaded her up and delivered her to my ~~studio~~ garage to get her ready for "The Ball".

(Ok....I am done with the silly story. I'll knock it off now as I am even starting to annoy myself...LOL)

Here she is now.......cat calls and all manner of whistling is acceptable....

Sorry for the poor pics...I was shooting into the light. Next week I am going back after Cinderella is accessorized properly and we will have a real photo shoot to show you of the entire store and all of the complete pieces.

Since I have no patience to wait until next week please just placate me now.

Back to the cat walk......

I happen to love the detailing behind the shelves.....turned out better than the picture in my head!

We opted to remove the doors from the bottom to better utilize the drawers and shelving.

Notice the backdrop detail carried through...

Let me back up abit and show you what really caused me some issue.

Once I removed the doors the lovely detail work was gone that tied the "look" from top to bottom and gave this piece balance....

The drawers were plain behind the doors and were just.very.BLAH.....

I considered a decorative paint technique....or some stenciling.....several other options but in the end ended up adding wood detail instead.

I LOVE IT and it balances the piece very well.....

I really do not even miss the ornate doors that were once there!

I have developed a THANG for painted hardware.....LURVE it....really, I do.

Love me some distressing too.....

Isn't it just amazing what can be done with a little imagination, a little paint and ~~a TON of~~ a little time?

The sun has set on "The Yellow Brick Road" but the path does not end......

I have reached a new beginning!

And I am embracing it!

It goes much further than a name change or a "blog lift"......this change speaks of my life.

A very personal and significant change......and I am OH.SO.EXCITED!

If I gave you details you may never even believe what He has taken me through.

Suffice to say that I stand in awe of my God. He is good....all the time!

The best news that I can share with you is that God is not a respecter of persons.

What He has done for me (and greater) He will do for you!

Simply because He loves you and delights in YOU.....

Let that thought sink deep into your heart.

I still have a hard time grasping it myself.

But it is true.

He loves you more than you can imagine......

I was SOOOOO excited to get an Eastlake dresser. You know, you see something that maybe someone else has painted or redone and you want to try it for yourself.

Well, I saw a few Eastlake dressers in Bloggy Land and HAD.TO.HAVE.ONE.....

like NOW!

This is what I am talking about....

They are not all that uncommon but for some reason seemed to elude me.....

probably in part because of the IWANTITTODAY issue.....

~maybe~

I love the shape of these little dressers and the primitive feel that they give a room.

Love.....yes?

I am not a mirrored dresser kind of gal......many of these come with an attached mirror which, in turn, kind of prices them just a little higher than I might like to pay.

So the search ensued and continued and drug out until I was about to die.....

like almost 3 long days, already!

Sheesh....what is a "Eastlake dresser lovin' girl" to do?!

Say it with me.....CRAIGSLIST!

No time to wait for an auction or an estate sale.....this was urgent....and yes, I know that YOU know what I mean....

I was persistent (72 hours baby) and at long last found my heart's desire....

or so I thought.

I picked up my youngest son from school (early) and we headed out across town.....you'd think that was quick but remember that I live in the Greater Houston area so "across town" is like driving across Delaware...serious.

We finally get to our destination and I am soooooo excited. The ad said something like "inherited this gorgeous Eastlake dresser from my great- grandfather's estate..... hate to part with it but I have no room" (why do people ALWAYS say that).......or maybe he was moving and could not take it with him.....anyway, something like that but I am quite sure that Grand Pop would not have been pleased.....

yeh, right!

Back to the story......(I am building suspense so work with me here......)

I park in the driveway and give my son the "You stay here and call 911 if I am not out in 10 minutes" talk.....oh, "and LOCK the doors when I get out!"

I literally skip up the front walk and am greeted by a cute, young (but very evil) couple.

I step into their foyer and lay my eyes upon this....

Oh my-my-my....my heart flutters.....my eyes well up with tears and I am in awe of the beauty of my new found treasure.

YES! SCORE!

Drawers open and close properly...check

Look around the top and sides as best I can.....check.

Inspect the frame for sturdiness.....check.

Oogle the cute little drawers.....check, check.

Fall in love with the adorable little white marble slab on top.....check

although, in my defense, I was already concerned about how I would get the marble clean...

(RED FLAG! WALK AWAY RHONDA! GOD IS SPEAKING TO YOU!)

Oh, but look at the detail.....love the little key holes and cut out design.....

the original hardware albeit rusty was even attractive....

pay attention....in the dimly lit foyer.....

And then I hear myself say, "Load him up! I'll take him!"

At that point I hand over XX amount of dollars (please do NOT make me tell you....Mr. YBR does occasionally read) and they pick him up and follow me to my truck....

I am quite sure that they were high five'n each other behind my back....and I may have over heard something like..."yup, there's a sucker born every minute....."

~just maybe~

But I am still happy and I remain as such UNTIL the next day.

So.....out to the ~~garage~~ studio (it's a studio when I am creating....) the next morning and I begin to plan my makeover.....

I break out the Simple Green and begin to clean my little sweetie before I work my magic.....

Removing drawers........and THIS is WHAT????

Really? How is it that Grand Pops had birds crapping INSIDE his dresser.....INSIDE his house.....

I am still hoping that this is, in fact, bird poop....I mean, I am not an expert on bird poop but I'd rather go with that than to think it may be some sort of rodent.....

Any ideas? Any rodent turd experts out there?

I shudder to think....REALLY.

Let's go back to this shot.....the one that lured me in.

I wonder....how do birds poop on the inside of a dresser and manage to not get any on the top or the front? Talented birds.....please, let's just continue believing together that this is birdie poop.

I still do not understand and I can only imagine where this dresser may have been.

I certainly hope not IN a house....although, when I picked him up he was happily sitting in the middle of a foyer....IN a house.....IN A HOUSE!

So, my sweet little dresser has a date....

...with a powerwasher.

And if I cannot BLOW THE CRAP OFF he may find himself back on Craigslist.....

poop and all!

(but he will never make his way INTO my house until and if he is entirely poop-free.)

Oh, and the moral of the story is.....

Check out the entire dresser.....

I do not care how cute the couple is, how long the trip was, how sad the story was.....

I will, from now on, pull the drawers ALL the way out and stick my head INTO the dresser to be sure that I am not getting MORE than I am paying for.

May I suggest that you do the same?

I bet y'all have wondered where I have been?

......I hope you have noticed my absence.....

I am flat out B.U.S.Y with several custom jobs = good

But completely stressed out about a BIG decision that I need to make

for the future of Restored~Home = yucky, aggravating and exciting!

I cannot give you any more info at this point but suffice to say that I have probably WAY overthought this thing.....I just want to do the right thing and I am sure that timing is a big part of it.

So, if you would, please pray for me and I will keep you posted on my decision......I have about 3-4 more days to sort it out. BLAH.

Ok...onto bigger and better stuff!

This week I delivered a second piece to a formal wear/bridal shoppe that I am working on.

When I have all pieces complete I will do a full post with all kinds of lovely pics but for today you get just a couple of teasers. (smirk)

Let me just tell you that I have not been simply pushed out of my comfort zone on this job.....but literally SHOVED out of it!

You know my general style and this.is.not.it......but OHSOMUCHFUN I had with this!

Here was my inspiration when I walked in the shoppe....

And this is what I came up with....

I call her "Hollywood Glam."

Sleek and sophisticated....

And these new filigree handles just scream "BLING"

don't ya think?

I adore the slick, black, high gloss top against the matte, charcoal base.

Silver accents are just icing on the cake.

Good Evening Roadsters......

I promise you will be "homies" very soon.....so do not be surprised when YBR is back in Kansas and "Restored~Home" takes center stage.

I am ready for the change!

Someone once told me that any job is easier if you have the right tools.

I never really put much thought into it until today.

Today I stripped a dresser, stained a dresser top, and painted like a MAD woman!

And that is when it occurred to me.....I enjoy my "j.o.b" because I have the right tools.

It took me awhile to find what I like and I am always up to try new products but right now I am in my groove......things run smoothly (for the most part!) and so I thought I would share a few of my favorite "tools" that help me do what I do.

First up: Purdy brushes....

It's been told before. I LURVE them! I have a paint brush obsession......it's okay most everyone knows by now.....no shame here.

I used to have a thang for Coach bags....needless to say Mr. YBR is a happy man now!

I've tried every other brand of paint brush.....no, I am not kidding.

Purdy is the best, hands down. Yes, they are alittle pricier than some but in this instance you definitely get what you pay for.

LURVE.....that's all I'm gonna say.

If you spend some buckage on brushes you want to take care of them.

Simple Green ROCKS the house for cleaning brushes!

Seriously, I rinse my brushes under running water, then fill a cup half way and shoot a couple of squirts of my miracle green little friend in there.....swoosh and sit for about an hour and VOILA.....rinses clean....even the paint line with NO scrubbing...no WIRE brush and no tantrum....from me!

Great stuff....run out and get some.

This one goes without even saying so I won't get all wordy......yeah right!

Okay....I will TRY to keep it short and sweet....

ASCP....surprise! (wink)

I am a mini-stockist but they do not pay me to love this paint.

I was buying it for months before I became a stockist and would still be buying it if I hadn't.

It.is.AH.MAZING.....'nuff said....

Well except, I have no idea why anyone would even use latex anymore.....atleast not on furniture....you couldn't get me to put a layer of latex paint on a piece of furniture to save my life...

(that sounds extreme even to me)....ok, maybe to save my life but other than that, NO WAY.

Sheesh.....sometimes I crack myself up.

Now here comes the serious stuff.....and I am very serious about stripping.

(stop.......)

It is a yucky job...no doubt about it.....a rewarding, yucky job....but yucky with a capital "Y."

I have tried several water-based strippers. If you want to know which ones NOT to use please email me although no need to try them when you can probably just get some of this fantastic product in your hands and IT WILL WORK.

This is Franmar Soy Gel Stripper. FANTASTIC stuff.

I tried another soy product today for a friend and it was awful....so all soy products are not created equally. I ended up applying this product today over the "test" product in order to get the job done.

No kidding.....no more than an hour and I was done.

It has a mild "fishy" odor but it is a million times more tolerable than any other product I have used.

I also like Citristrip and used it exclusively until I found this product. Citristrip works but has a very strong "orangey" odor and does give me a headache if I am not careful.

Soy Gel can be found at Woodcraft and I looooooove me some Woodcraft!

Shout out to Lance and the guys at my local store....they are all awesome and a wealth of friendly, knowledgeable help.

Woodcraft puts the other home improvement stores to shame when it comes to "know how" so be sure and check out your local store.

I could go on and on and on and on about products and tools and resources but I fear that I am boring you to death. I do realize that not every girl has a love affair with such things. LOL

Heck, I didn't either for most of my adult life but I doooooo now.

And baby, do I have it bad!

ARGH!

Vintage Hymnal Dresser

It has been a long, long day.

I'm not feeling very creative, very chatty or very anything other than sleepy right now.

So please forgive me if I just show you some "Before and After's" of a dresser makeover that I finished last week.

This project actually took a while to come together.

I had been searching for some vintage hymnals to use and they are not easy to come by!

A couple of weeks ago Mr. YBR and I were on our way into the church on a Wednesday evening. As we were heading into the building we passed our music director, Pastor Roy.

I'm not even sure why it occurred to me at that moment but I asked him, in passing, if he knew where I could find/purchase a few hymnals.....

at this point I even dropped the vintage requirement. LOL

As if it were nothing at all he said......"I'll find you after service. I have several in my office that you can have.....but they're old, if that is ok."

HA! You are kidding me! HA!

(Jesus finds some of the coolest ways to bless me sometimes......)

Why didn't I ask him before I looked for eleventy-billion years to find just one?!
(ok....maybe not eleventy billion years......maybe a couple of months though.)

I was thrilled and those hymnals made the most beautiful Vintage Hymnal Dresser, ever!

You certainly cannot appreciate the "after"picture fully until you see his "before."

He had really good bones and I love this style of dresser.....

you know that....

But his top was really a mess and there was no easy repair......so a little wood filler to level it out.....

and plenty of hymnal pages to cover it up!

Worked like a charm!

I swapped out the original knobs just cuz I can.

and I selected some of my very favorite old hymns.....

Sure to build anyone's faith. Right?

Now he's sitting pretty out at Restored~Home.

That is unless I enact the "14 day rule".....

Relax, I made the rule but have yet to exercise it!

It's sometimes just nice to know that I can if I really want to.....

I love the creative energy that kicks in when I get a new piece home and I just sit and examine it.....waiting for it to "speak to me".......to formulate a plan and then to finally execute it.

It's a drug.....a passion, an obsession that drives me!

But it's legal.....so I embrace it.

Last week I actually brought a piece home....a French piece.....(squeal)....for myself.

You heard me. Just me, myself and I!

(double squeal!)

I had been on the hunt for awhile for this baby. I have two bloggy friends, Marian and Pamela, that have taunted me recently with theirs....but alas, the stars aligned and the Heaven's opened up and it was MY turn!

Without further ado......here she is.....she shall be called "Claire."

(Claire was my name for several years of high school French....

are you impressed? LOL Me neither....)

Can you believe the cubbie space?

Perfect for my home office! Puuuurrrrfect.....

This was a Craigslist find, of sorts....the lady that had this armoire had almost purchased a desk from me months ago so it was kind of neat to reconnect.

She and I made a quick deal/trade and now Claire is mine........

ALL MINE!

And Claire is no ordinary armoire. No sir.

She was custom made many years ago for the grandmother of my "friend".

She is solid wood (Claire....not my friend....I crack myself up)....and built beautifully.

Much nicer than I ever anticipated finding....or owning.....

(triple squeal!)

He lavishes me with His love.....more than I could ever ask or think!

This armoire is a beautiful reminder......

And although she looks amazingly beautiful just as she is.....I must.....you know that I must, paint her.

She will be wearing some sort of custom mix of my beloved Annie Sloan Paint in the very near future.

TGIF Roadsters!

Lots of paint flyin' around here this week. I am working on a new project for a dress consignment shoppe that just opened. I am super excited about creating fabulous display pieces for her!

I finished up a couple of nursery pieces for a friend of mine, Lindsay.

(Hi Lindsay.....sorry our conversation got cut short last night amidst the crazy lightening storm......

you are uber cute and I just adore your family!)

Anyhoo......take a look at the dresser/ changing table that I finished for Lindsay.

"Before"

I am drawn to these types/styles of dressers. They are very flexible in their uses.

Dresser, changing table, entry piece, serving piece.....the list goes on.

Here he is "After."

I refinished the top in a Dark Walnut stain.

Two different ASCP colors.

Can you guess which two?

I love how this piece distressed.

I realize it is not for everyone but I do like that "chippy" finish.

Waxed to the softest sheen imaginable......

(I am not kidding.....this dresser is silky smooth.....you just gotta touch it!)

He will make his happy little home as a changing table for Baby Camden.

How sweet is that?

And for those of you keeping up with the DIY contest.......

well, I am so sad to say that I did not win.

**sigh**

I placed in the Top 10 and that is pretty exciting but I am now more determined than ever!

I have my plan for October.....be on the lookout for my Stenciled Dropcloth Rug tutorial......maybe this will be the BIG winner for October!

Good Morning!

Of course, I hit the ground running (actually a brisk walk with Mr. YBR at 5am) this morning but I wanted to pause for a second and fill you in on "whazup" here at YBR.

If you've been hanging around here for awhile you know that we opened a shoppe a couple of months ago and became a mini-stockist for Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. This all happened rather quickly and is evolving into something more than I had ever anticipated.
Very exciting!

When I started my blog it was to simply share my personal (neverending) projects and journal about our life "in the fast lane." Now the two have converged and some changes are necessary.
**sigh**

After much contemplation, I have decided to drop "Yellow Brick Road" and rename my blog to match the shoppe....."Restored~Home."

I'm pretty excited about this! It will require another "facelift" to change up the look around here but I think it just makes sense to simplify everything since the two are now becoming one.

The URL has changed already but will continue to redirect from the old one....no worries.

I just didn't want anyone to be surprised when you stopped by to see YBR and were greeted by

"Restored~Home" instead!

Change is good, right?!

Good Monday Morning Roadsters!

I am just elated to share this bit o' news with you!

A couple of weeks ago I entered a contest at the DIY Club. They have a monthly contest for tutorials only and I entered 2 of mine. My "Chair Caning" tutorial and my "Shabby Lampshade" tutorial. I found out today that my "Chair Caning" tutorial has been selected as part of the Top 10 for the month of September!

Holy pete! Can you even believe it??

Good EARLY Thursday Morning!

Grab a cup o' coffee or your BOC (beverage of choice) and let me entertain you with my latest project.

I'll get it off my chest right now......I SO want to keep this one!

I mean it! But I carted "her" off to Restored~Home yesterday and enacted the "14 Day Rule."

If she is still there on October 5th I am going back to get her and she will be MINE!

That's fair, don't ya think?

Love the details......

Not lovin' the 4 (or more) coats of THICK, white latex paint.

Ewwwwwww.....the lady that ~~was holding her hostage~~ sold her said she had started to refinish her and then decided against it.....

(I got a good chuckle outta that!)

No doubt, it is not for the "faint hearted" when it comes to stripping layers of paint....

but it is OH.SO.WORTH.IT!

This is what I ended up with after the ooooohy, goooooey, marshmallowy, GOOP that I scraped off for a few hours....

(yes, I said HOURS.)

Not too shabby.....

I almost left the top this way and just waxed but soon decided on a coat of Walnut stain.

Now we're gettin' somewhere.....

I really labored over color on this piece.

My head kept telling me to use the new ASCP Pure White with heavy antiquing but my heart said

"Oh my......Versailles"......and for those of you who know me......

I generally follow my heart......

***sigh***

.....don't be a hater.....

I made the right choice and here she is now making her runway debut!

Go ahead.....swoon.....she is a LOOKER!

I added Old White to the detail work....

and dark wax just took them to the next level.

I was shocked actually! Everything else was gone after the weekend.

Maybe that is God's way of enacting my "14 Day Rule."

Shabby Lampshade Tutorial

Good Tuesday Morning!

Please hang with me while I mostly explain how to make my nifty little lampshades.

I had not planned a tutorial so most of the pictures that I am going to use were made "after the fact". Since y'all are so smart....and these are soooooo easy....I know we can figure this out together!

Of course, if I miss something or something is unclear to you please contact me directly and I will answer your questions asap.

I was quite pleased that these lampshades got as much attention as they did on the link parties that I attended! In fact, I was even "featured" over at Linda's.

Ok....let's get started, shall we?

List of items needed:

Wire lampshade
Dropcloth (laundered)
Scissors
Fabric tape measure
(Seriously....that.is.all.)

Step 1:
Launder your dropcloth so that it is soft and you are able to easily tie it.
I buy all of my dropcloth at Lowe's, 8 ounce variety.
They come in many different sizes and even various tones/shades of cloth.

For my lampshades (which are 11 inches diameter x 12 inches in length) I chose a 4 x 15 foot dropcloth. That worked best for my shades because I needed 4 foot strips to make my ties.

Step 2:

Remove all of the cloth or current covering that is on your lampshade.

Take it down to the wire frame.

(this is not the lampshade that I used....just for illustration purposes. Cool lampshade, though, huh?)

Step 3:

Put your lampshade back on your lamp as it will be easier to work on.

Step 4:

Measure your shade to decide on the length of dropcloth strips that you will need.

You can measure the length (ie. 12 inches) multiply x 2 (24 inches) and then give yourself enough material to tie a knot and cut each end to your desired length.

For my project I went with 4 foot strips but had quite a bit to cut off at the end.

3 feet would probably have been plenty. (but I'd rather be too long than too short!)

Step 5:

Now lay out your dropcloth and cut 2 inch strips by whatever length you have decided on.

Again, mine were 2 inches x 4 feet

Step 5:

Prepare to start tying!

Wrap your first strip around the wire and pull the ends to the front of the shade.

and then.......TIE a knot!

I kind of varied the height of my knots all the way around the shade. Be creative!

Once you get the knot where you want it then you can decide on the length of the ends that you want.

Just cut off the excess and you are on your way!

Step 6:

Repeat the process of tying until you go all around your entire shade and VOILA....

you have an amazing Shabby Lampshade!

I kind of overlapped the strips alittle to make a fuller look....you can do what you like here.

For my shades it look about 26-30 strips of dropcloth.

And because I have not said it yet on this post.....

I LURVE these little creations!

Now get busy and be CrEaTiVe......
