Apple revealed "The new iPad"

Today is the day. Apple introduced their newest tablet. And while several possible names have been rumored, Apple has decided to just call it "The new iPad". Well, to our mind "iPad 3" would have been the obvious choice and totally suitable. Just "iPad HD", "iPad LTE" or something like that would have been fine, too. But "The new iPad" just seems kind of odd to us. Especially if you think of the name for the next iPad - maybe "The all new iPad"? We don't know.

But as the name is probably the one thing most people don't care about, let's go ahead and talk about the changes that really matter...

Specs

First of all, the one thing almost everyone expected - a retina display. To be exact, the new display sports a 2048x1536 resolution which leads to a pixel density of 264 ppi - the highest of any tablet worldwide - yet.

Second of all, the new iPad boasts a new processor - Apple's A5X which has now two CPU cores (just like before) but four GPU cores. According to Apple, it can deliver up to four times the performance of NVIDIA's Tegra 3 quad-core processor.

Last but not least of the (in our opinion) three most important improvements is the also awaited LTE radio. Alongside HSPA+ with 21Mbps it finally sports LTE with speeds up to 73Mbps - for the customers of Verizon, AT&T, Rogers, Bell and Telus anyways. And despite that, Apple claims that the battery still lasts just as long as the one within the iPad 2.

Beside those three important features, Apple also kind of included Siri in their newest tablet. Well, unfortunately it's not the whole Siri experience as we know it from the iPhone 4S. Actually, it's only integrated to the keyboard and if you like you can now speak your texts instead of typing them.

To round the specs up, Apple also improved the camera of the device sporting now practically the same one that we know from the iPhone 4S. Except for two things - it's 5MP instead of 8 and there's still no LED flash.

Design

As you can see from the pictures, the design hasn't changed much. With 9.4mm and 1.4lbs it is just a little bit thicker and heavier than the iPad 2. But believe us, as long as you're not holding on in each of your hands, you're barely gonna be able to spot the difference.

Pricing / Availability

As for price and availability, Apple's new device is going to cost exactly as much as the iPad 2 (the prices of the iPad 2 will be cut, of course) and it will start shipping on March, 16th.

Wrap-up

To sum up, Apple certainly hasn't surprised anyone with "The new iPad". But if you think about the introduction of the iPhone 4S, you surely agree that something we had expected would have often been better than something we had not expected. Stay tuned and enjoy the pictures below.

Sony's new flagship - Xperia S

Along many other companys, Sony revealed some new devices at MWC 2012 in Barcelona. And as always, one of these devices gets to be called the new "flagship" of the company. For Sony, it's the Xpera S. Read on to find out all the specs and some more pictures of the device.

First of all, lets' look at the specs:

CNBC: iPad 3 with quad-core and LTE! (UPDATE!)

Latest rumor about the iPad 3: CNBC just twitterd that the latest tablet from Apple will be revealed next week in NY!

And that's not all: a quad-core SoC and LTE will also be part of the feature-list from the new iPad.
It seems that CNBC is quite sure about their sources, but again: these are only rumors....

UPDATE: Apple confirmed a press conference for March 7th. It will take place in San Francisco. Thanks to Engadget!

MWC: Asus PadFone ready to ship in April!

Actually, it was one of the most-anticipated Android devices last year. We are talking about the PadFone. Remember? It was June when we revealed this innovative hybrid model from Asus for the first time.

At the MWC, the korean company showed us an updated version which does not only look more sexy but it also seems matured. Read on for the spec list and pics!

So, what do the specs for the Asus PadFone look like? Not bad at all!

In addition, Asus will also give you a free stylus...

For now, there are no details about the price and whether or not the keyboard of the original Transformer will work with the PadFone, too.
The device will be shipping in April and will support CDMA, GSM and HSPA+.
CG believes there will also be a LTE version in future.

At the end, there is to say that it is a quite courageous "Tab-phone-book". The most important aspect will be the price. In my opinion, the sweet spot without the keyboard dock will be at $499...

HTC's first quad-core device - the HTC One X

At Mobile World Congress, HTC introduced a new lineup of smartphones - called "One". The most high-end device of them is called the HTC One X. Aside from amazing specs you can read below, it also sports some new specialities like shooting full-size pictures while recrding in 1080p and a LED flash with support for 5 levels of automatic brightness control. But now, we've put you on the rack long enough, read on for the specs!

And all of that is wrapped up in a - at least in my opinion - gorgeous looking unibody design.

There are only two things I need to criticise. No microSD and no changeable battery. But I could get over both of that facts considering there are 32GB of storage inside and that you get an unibody design.

Unfortunately, HTC hasn't lost a word on pricing yet. But they confirmed to launch it globally in April.

I'm certainly looking forward to it and compared to this device, I love my Galaxy Nexus lust a little bit less than before. Stay tuned and also check out the promo video below.

Samsung unveils Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1)

Mobile World Congress hasn't even officially started but some companies have already shown us something new. One of them is Samsung with its Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1). As the name suggests, it's the successor to the original Galaxy Tab 10.1. Go ahead to find out what's changed.

First of all, let's speak about the design. As you can see, it looks pretty similar to the German version of the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 - called the Galaxy Tab 10.1N. In case you don't know, Samsung wasn't allowed to sell their Galaxy Tab in Germany because it looked too similar to Apple's iPad / iPad 2. Therefore, Sammy made a slightly modified version of their tablet - the Galaxy Tab 10.1N. Looks like Samsung doesn't take any chances this time. Hopefully, this prevents another patent war between Samsung and Apple.

Enough with the design, let's come to the fun part - the specs. Unfortunately, there's not much new to tell.

Sammy seems to stick with the specs the original Galaxy Tab already had:

10.1" screen (1280x800 pixels)
3MP rear camera (recording in 720p at 30fps)
VGA front-facing camera
1GB of RAM
16 / 32GB of internal storage

The only improvement we can spot is the microSD slot which was (for some reason) missing in the original Galaxy Tab. Well, the battery also changed from 6,800 to 7,000 mAh but those 200 aren't really going to make a big difference.

If you take a look at the dimensions, you will notice that it's even got about 1 mm thicker. That is admittedly not much. But with all the same specs we just cannot think of a good reason for it being thicker.

As far as the software is concerned, it's obviously going to ship with Android Ice Cream Sandwich and TouchWiz on top.

Samsung hasn't lost a word on pricing yet. But in order to choose this one over practically the same original Galaxy Tab 10.1, this one will need to be a whole lot cheaper. That, we will find out in March, when it begins to ship in the United Kingdom.

I personally have to say that I'm pretty much disappointed from this device. And for me there arises the question: No quad-core tablet from Samsung? We will see.

CG presents... Galaxy Nexus - Google's newest flagship!

Here it is! Google's brand-new smartphone hits the shelves! After the Nexus One (built by HTC) and the Nexus S (built by Samsung) it's the third device of Google's "Nexus" series and as the name "Galaxy" suggests, this one is again built by Samsung. So, what's special/new about it? Well, there are two things that come straight to my mind.

First: Ice Cream Sandwich. It's the first device with the newest version of Android (4.0).

Second: Super AMOLED HD. The Nexus' display features a resolution of 1280x720 pixels which brings us to a pixel density of 316 ppi (pixels per inch). That is the highest ppi of any smartphone over 4'' (sorry iPhone).

CG presents... MustHave Game - Sonic CD

Hi folks! Some months ago, we introduced the "MustHave Apps". Remember?

Now it is time for something new: The "MustHave Games". As the name suggests, we will present you an actual game of which we believe it is worth buying and, of course, playing. Our first episode is about one of the world's best-known video game characters ever. He is called Sonic, Sega's mascot!

But what game are we talking about, exactly? It is "Sonic CD" which was orginally released for the "Mega CD" / "Sega CD", the addon for Sega's "Mega Drive" / "Genesis", in 1993! After almost 20 years, Sega decided to rerelease its masterpiece on XBLA, PSN, Android and iOS. But that is not all: Sega also included some extras like the original Japanese AND American soundtrack. And let's not forget the cool intro that is now high-res...

We believe Sega did a great job and we hope they will revive some other classics in the near future. If you are curious about what it looks like on a smartphone, then just lean back and enjoy the gameplay video and the pics below!

Acer's Iconia Tab A700 with Full HD display?

Looks like Acer is gonna be the first release a tablet with the long anticipated Full HD resolution (1920x1200 in this case). And not only that. It'll also be powered by NVIDIA'S newest Tegra 3 processor (quad-core).

For those of you that is still not enough, it also sports a SIM-card slot, microSD, micro-HDMI, mirco-USB and two cameras. The one on the back features 5 megapixels and a flash. The one on the front records videos in HD (we're guessing 1.3 MP). Despite all of that, the battery with 9,800 mAh will last for up to 10 hours of video playback.

All that comes to us in March or April in a (to our mind) very slick and good-looking device which weighs only 650 grams. Check out the pictures below to convince yourself.

The Grand Premiere: Gresso introduces phone with $50,000 price tag

Got 50 grand under your mattress? No? Well, than you're probably not gonna be able to enjoy Gresso's newest masterpiece of their Avantgarde collection - the Grand Premiere. Read on to find out why anyone should even think about spending $50,000 for a ~~smart~~phone.

Let's make on thing clear in advance: This is clearly not a phone with outstanding specs. It's running Symbian S40, has no touchscreen and you most certainly shouldn't bring it to a benchmark fight against current smartphones. So why buy it? We would say, for prestige. And the following materials can get you that without any doubt.

Is Apple working on a 7.85 incher?

Well, there are always rumors about a new device from Apple. But today, the Asian publication "DigiTimes" revealed a very interesting one. It seems that the company from Cupertino is planning an "iPad mini".
Actually, the rumor about the "iPad mini" is not new - last month, it was the "Korea Times" telling us that Apple was working on a smaller version. However, both rumors reports that the display producer will be LG respectively AU Optronics.

But in our opinion, Apple will not risk a fragmentation. We believe, the chances to see an "iPad mini" are at most at 30%.

PS Vita: more than 320,000 units sold!

Google is starting to roll out ICS for the Nexus S!

Jep, since yesterday, Google has finally started to roll out the latest version of Android! They are planning to upgrade the Nexus S devices in the next four weeks. Surprisingly, the version will not be 4.0, but the latest, 4.0.3, which is not even running on the Galaxy Nexus. But there is also a problem, though.

Customers from Sprint, which are using the CDMA edition, still have to wait for the update for unknown reason.

Google is sharing the update via Over-The-Air. If you do not want to wait, the update can also be installed manually as the ROM is available for download.

CG presents... the Galaxy Note from Samsung!

In the last two years, tablets achieved great success, not only because the iPads were released, but also Samsung with its Galaxy series contributed a lot.

About three and a half months ago, we reported about Samsung's plan to build a device which should close the gap between a smartphone and a tablet. And yes, they did not only manage to produce it, but also to create a new “Smarttablet” experience. The name of its device: Galaxy Note!

You might think: "Smarttablet? Never heard of that!". Actually, you are right, but how would you describe a device which features a 5.3 inch display and a S-Pen?!

In Europe, the Note is available since the end of November and we had the chance to have a look at the new baby from Samsung. Check out the hands-on video and you will see, we are not lying if we say Sammy did a great job...

Futuristic smartphone concept by Kunihiko Nakata

In the last years, some revolutionary smartphones were developed from several companies all over the world. We all know that development never ends and here is the proof: The guys from Yanko Design revealed a very impressive smartphone concept art called "Palette". The japanese designer, Kunihiko Nakata, uses two sub-displays in order to achieve a great multitasking experience.

The display on the top features four buttons which allow the user to send information instantly to services like Facebook or Twitter, whereas the display at the bottom is used to have immediate access to every application running.

Also remarkable: the smartphone is nearly marginless.
Too bad, this phone is only a concept, but we hope to have this kind of masterpeace in our hands one day...

It's been seven years now since it launched back in 2004. In the meantime, Motorola released a few other models of the RAZR family - but none of them could really live up to the success of their predecessor. To our mind, that's about to change! Kindle Fire: the iPad's hardest competitor!

If you compare the market share of all available Android-tablets to the iPad's, the result is pretty disillusioning. Even though Apple sells only the iPad and the iPad 2 and there are like 20 Android tablets available, Apple still has a market share 65.6 %.

Apparently, Android is going to have a slow start in that department - just like it did back in 2008 with the smartphones. But thankfully - for all Android lovers at least - one tablet gives us hope: it's Amazon's Kindle Fire. Read on to find out why.

Even though the Fire was only available for half of the last quarter (since November), it holds a total market share of amazing 13.8 % with 3.9 million sold devices. This is more than all the other tablet manufacturers sold together.

Samsung (e.g. Galaxy Tab 7.7, 8.9 and 10.1) and the American company Barnes & Noble (e.g. Nook, Nook Color) are fighting for the silver medal with about 1.3 million sold devices and HTC couldn't reach the winner's podium with 355.000.

webOS goes Open-Source!

So here is HP's solution about one of the biggest flops in the history: On Friday, the company said that they are giving away the webOS software, which has been used for their Touch-Pad and Pre series.

With the power of the open-source community, HP believes, webOS has "the opportunity to significantly improve applications and web services for the next generation of devices".

They also declared that they will continue to be an "active participant and investor in the project".

Well, our opinion is that this does not have to mean anything since we know how fast projects had been abandoned these days (e.g Meego and Nokia).

Nokia's WP7 smartphones are out! Pics+specs!

Let's talk about the design. First of all, it looks awesome! A very unique design (in three different colors: blue, black, red), we have never seen before. Great materials and a clever curved display. What can we expect more?

The second device, the Lumia 710, is the cheaper version of the 800. It still features the 1.4 GHz from Qualcomm, but the keys are restitive and the display is no AMOLED.

The Lumia 710 in different colors

So what is the difference between the 800 and 710? Well, first of all, it does not look as great as the 800 and will not use a unibody case. Instead, it has a back made of plastic which will be exchangeable with other colors (blue, red, white, black, yellow). As we mentioned: it will not use an AMOLED screen and it will feature restitive keys. The 710 will be the "more affordable" handest from the Redmond's.

Wrap-up

Nokia did a great job and is back in business! With these two great devices (especially the Lumia 800), we are sure that not only Nokia, but also the Windows Phone brand will profit and regain market shares.

Both handsets will be available in Europe in Novemeber. The estimated prices are 270€ ($375) for the Lumia 710 and 420€ ($585) for the Lumia 800. It is not known when they will arrive in the U.S. Stay tuned for further informations...

iPod turns 10, Happy Birthday!

Let's play a little game. I say a word and you say the first word that comes to your mind. Ready? All right. 1, 2, 3... MP3 player! Let me guess, you thought about an iPod, right? Well, at least I do so every time.
It's the world's most popular MP3 player. And today is its 10th birthday. Unbelievable that this little thing by Apple has already been replacing physical media for one decade now.

Well, let's skip the history lesson and come to the point: Happy Birthday, iPod!

Announced: The Galaxy Nexus with ICS!

Finally, here it is! Samsung officially announced the third generation of the Nexus series: The Galaxy Nexus alias Nexus Prime. It is no surprise that it will be the first smartphone to run Ice Cream Sandwich.
Keep on reading for the spec list and the reason why it isn't the ultimate smartphone CG hoped for.

At first, the specs:

At a first glance, these specs really look superb, but as we took a closer look, we revealed these two disapointments:

1. CPU: We heard a lot of rumors about the high-end SoC from Texas Instruments and that the latest Nexus will feature it. Instead of two times 1.5 GHz, we have "only" 1.2 GHz. Of course, this isn't bad at all, but not what we hoped for...

2. Outdated GPU: Again we have to criticize the choice of Samsung's SoC. Instead of using the Exynos SoC with a very powerful GPU called Mali-400, the Nexus contains only a very old GPU from 2007: the SGX540. C'mon Sammy, 1280x720 pixels combined with a four years old GPU?!

We know, this is critic on a very high level, but remember: Sammy promised us a "big" thing....

Wrap-up

It is still the best Nexus ever with a very impressive screen (HD+SAMOLED). But again, it isn't a phone without a spot. It features a disapointing GPU and a weaker CPU than expected. It just ruined our overall impression.

But if you are searching for the pure ICS experience combined with a phone up-to-date, the Galaxy Nexus is definitely the best choice!

Comeback of the year: The new Motorola Droid RAZR is out! (UPDATE!)

It is the comeback of the year! Some hours ago, Motorola demonstrated their newest smartphone: the Motorola Droid RAZR! Wait...RAZR?! Aren't they those legendary flip-out phones? Jep, 1000 points!
It seems like Motorola thought it is worth producing a successor... We think so, too!

First of all, it is no flip-out phone anymore, but it still has a very unique design.

It features only little indicated curves and a very nice back made out of kevlar. Motorola claims that their latest creation will be the slimmest smartphone available on the market (release date: November) although it is LTE-ready.

The front

However, the RAZR is a great device with a legendary name. CG believes it will sell quite solid, especially in the U.S. The RAZR will be available for $299 on contract at Verizon in a few weeks.

UPDATE: Motorola announced that Ice Cream Sandwich will be available at the beginning of 2012, we're still waiting for a precise date...
