I grew up in a kosher-style home and, though my love for prosciutto and lobster grew with age outside of the house, I rarely had the chance to cook pork and shellfish myself. Labor Day posed the perfect opportunity in my own (non-kosher) home to test the ultimate flavor-packed protein: pork chops. We succeeded without needing to fire up the oven or the grill. All we needed were a piping hot cast iron skillet, extra garlic, and a generous pinch of red pepper flakes. The outcome, paired with baked spaghetti squash with grated pecorino and French green beans, was unimaginably satisfying. If I hadn’t yet stolen Alex’s heart, Monday eve on the patio sealed the deal.

This boneless pork chop recipe is seasonally adaptive, allowing the heat and flavors to travel from summer to fall with comfort and creativity. If you aren’t a pork person, sub for filet or chicken. I hope you love this one!

Makes 2 servings

1 tablespoon canola oil
2 pork chops, about 1-inch thick
Sea salt and black pepper
1/2 tablespoon butter
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 shallot, thinly sliced
2 large cloves garlic, thinly sliced

1. Take pork chops out of refrigerator 30 minutes before cooking. Sprinkle both sides with sea salt and black pepper.

2. Heat cast iron skillet with canola oil over medium high heat. Add pork to pan and leave, uninterrupted, for four minutes on each side. Then, add butter to pan and, once melted, use a spoon to pour over pork. Flip after 1 minute and repeat. Remove pork chops from pan and allow to rest on cutting board for 10 minutes.

3. Return the skillet back to the stove and turn heat to medium. Add garlic to existing butter/oil mixture and, when garlic is fragrant, add shallots and red pepper flakes. Continue to cook and stir until onions caramelize, approximately 10 minutes.

4. Add pork chops back to skillet and top each chop with shallots and garlic. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Dear Memphis,

Today, which is simply known as September 1st everywhere else, is all about you.

Your rushing River is my front yard, and your booming Downtown is my backyard.

Your energy consumes me and pushes me to think bigger than I ever thought I could.

Your authenticity keeps me grounded, and your warmth keeps me passionate.

Your people are my family, my colleagues and my role models.

You don’t get as much credit as you deserve, and that selflessness transmits through your people.

You host dialogues that other cities haven’t initiated.

You embrace the gritty history that isn’t fully realized or appreciated elsewhere.

You open doors and pave new paths.

You exemplify “and” rather than “but.”

You welcome creativity and purpose behind each interaction and initiative.

You accept there’s more work to do, but you applaud the limitless list of accomplishments.

Your food is phenomenal.

You will forever be my home. And I will forever be your concierge.

You’re good to me. And I promise to be good to you.

Happy 901 Day.

Sincerely,
Cara

Perhaps it’s the “back to school” mantra surrounding my social media and shopping encounters; but lately, I’ve been on the hunt to find snacks that are both work- and school-friendly and, more importantly, diet-friendly.

Whole Foods’ snack aisles inspired my latest three snack recipes that, at first glace, seem super simple — as they should be. Guilt-free and nutritious (under 200 calories!), these bites bring satisfaction, color and crunch to a tedious task list on the job.

I miss the simplicity of the waves washing against white sand. But it doesn’t mean I can’t bring such sun-kissed beach serenity back home. Prompted by a new hair care routine, I began to reflect on the most coveted parts of vacation and motivated myself to make them new priorities in Memphis, too. Join me in a healthful approach to post-beach relaxation and rejuvenation.

1. RESIMPLIFY the diet.

Though daily schedules greatly differ on the beach and in the office, vacation’s influx of sun and detox from unhealthy bites should translate to the “real world.” A daily diet of whole foods and simplified presentations brings me back to the poolside retreat of Alys Beach. Bring on the avocado toast, colorful salads and fruit plates (and agave margaritas).

Don’t you miss those days on the beach where hours of time (and a big meal opportunity) might pass without realization?

As Camille Styles shared this week, “these busy lives we lead often require doing everything very quickly and very efficiently, often on autopilot because we’re actually doing two (or five) things at once.” So, let’s channel our inner beach. By slowing down our hunger angst and taking our time through snacks and meals, we’re more likely to reach for snacks or desserts later and realize that, though it’s 11:30 a.m., we may not be ready for lunch yet after all.

2. READ often and uninterrupted.

Our days are spent constantly absorbing bits and pieces of topical news and content. Tweets are limited to 150 characters, and news feeds combine clusters of topics and opinions that seem to increase the ADD (attention deficit disorder) in each of us!

Just as we pull out a good book or aesthetic magazine on the sand, we should similarly soak up a great novel chapter or magazine feature every single day. Uninterrupted narratives challenge our vocabularies, our imaginations, and our creative inclinations. Turn over your phone while you’re turning the pages, too.

3. REBALANCE the hair.

Beauty care (at the basics) is an essential daily deed. A treat-yourself, relaxed tradition — whether a monthly spa pedicure, quarterly massage, or new hair regimen — should inspire a rebalanced state of mind.

For my salt water and color-treated curly locks, I turned to DESSANGE Paris personalized scalp treatments to break the vicious cycle of combination unbalanced hair. Upon returning from Florida, I grabbed this collection at Target and discovered its brilliance–an oil-control, two-part hair care system that treats both the scalp and the lengths at-home.

By this point in August, it’s inevitable that rosé has stolen our summer hearts and this season’s wine cellars. The “yes way rosé” mantra has captured social media, restaurant and patio concentrations (mine included). I simply couldn’t say farewell to the season without throwing a wine-tasting party with the girls — thus, the rise in rosé’s popularity not only prompted our party’s culinary palate, but also every other detail, as well.

For the first taste of the Cara + Alex wedding brand, our save-the-date mailings needed a detailed differentiator. Traditionally received as a basic reminder–wedding couple, date and location–our version begged for creativity and clean, sophisticated production to set the stage for our March affair.

I’m lucky to spend my days alongside a team of brilliant creatives at DCA, a Memphis-based creative communications consulting firm. They’ve treated my and Alex’s wedding as a formal client with brand attributes and applications; and the save the date mailer and wedding website were the first steps of the process. Pairing DCA’s design with The Stovall Collection’s talented production team was a match made in heaven. Stovall’s copper foil and embossment expertise marked the best introduction for our out-of-town wedding guests.

We needed a Caramelized touch to the trusted package, of course; so a candied dates recipe was featured to help “save the dates.” I hope you’ll try it out!

Makes 24 dates

1 lb. (about 2 dozen) pitted medjool dates
½ cup raw walnuts, halved
1 cup unrefined organic cane sugar
¼ cup water

1. Make small length-wise cut in each date and insert walnut half.

2. Lightly brush each date in water.

3. Roll dates in sugar individually until well coated, then place on parchment paper.

4. When dry, dates can be stored in muslin bag or airtight container.

My fiancé and my childhood best friend were both celebrating birthdays just days apart, so I took charge to host our friends for bourbon drinks and sophisticated (and very simple) snacks.

I began with a quick farmers market grab of sunflowers and a trip to Miss Cordelia’s for cheese, charcuterie and other appetizer ingredients.
1. CITY & STATE

The hot coffees and lattes declare perfection at my Broad Avenue morning retreat. However, the baristas’ creative coffee program expands regularly with seasonal offerings–this time in affogato form. Area 51 mint chip ice cream is coated in a shot of bold espresso and quickly becomes the best dessert you’ve ever tasted.

2. JERRY’S SNO CONES

From mid-morning to mid-evening, summertime visitors expect to pull up to a legendary line winding ‘round the fluorescent pink sno cone stand on a Memphis neighborhood corner. The consistent crowd is remarkable, though it speaks volumes of the quality and pure satisfaction of syrup-heavy flavored ice. The popular “supreme” differentiator adds a swirl of soft-serve yogurt atop the sno cone.

3. A. SCHWAB’S

In the heart of Downtown Memphis’ Beale Street boasts the famous A. Schwab’s General Store and soda fountain. Beyond the ingenious knick-knacks and historical treasures throughout the two-story shop, the in-house crafted sodas, floats and ice cream sundaes are the ultimate draw during hot summer days. Take a step back in time with a cold glass of root beer and vanilla cream, Elvis music in the background, and tourists trotting throughout.

4. MEMPOPS

The first handcrafted, specialty popsicle—dubbed a Mempop—was first sold in a renovated, retro blue mail truck one year ago; and now, the local business’ multiple ice pop trucks and carts collectively sell thousands of frozen flavors a day. All-natural flavors change frequently, typically dependent upon the season; and at the East Memphis brick-and-mortar location, a chocolate-dipped ice pop add-on pleases customers with an extra sweet tooth.

5. DEEP SOUTH POPS

Okay, this isn’t in Memphis; but the Jackson-based pop and coffee shop was a pure highlight of my summer road trip, and I couldn’t resist sharing. Blueberry and creole cheesecake flavors wildly impressed our taste buds.

Feeling peachy this week? If so, you’re in luck.

For an even sweeter end to summer, turn a farmers market bounty into a show-stopping dessert. Ripe peaches caramelize in the oven with a coarse crumble of healthy-ish ingredients, including King Arthur whole wheat flour. As Jeannine of Love & Lemons suggests (who inspired this recipe), serving piping hot with scoops of vanilla bean ice cream.

Makes 8 servings

2/3 cup rolled oats
2/3 cup chopped pecans
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
2/3 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
pinch of salt
6 tablespoons cold butter
8 peaches, sliced

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and brush an 8″x8″ baking dish with butter.

2. Use a food processor to pulse the oats, pecans, flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the butter and give it a few short pulses until the the mixture clumps together. If too dry, add water one teaspoon at a time. If too wet, add a little more flour.

3. Place the sliced peaches into the dish, sprinkle the crumble mixture on top and bake until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is soft, about 18-20 minutes.

To select the wedding gown is one feat in itself; but to experience a genuine, no-stress, serene shopping trip is a miracle. How lucky Memphis is to have a gem like Maggie Louise Bridal, where every gown and gesture is curated for the best bridal appointment I could have ever dreamed.

The photos below display Maggie Louise’s exceptional collection with a thoughtful trendy-traditional mix. Prior to our appointment, I had a phone consultation with owner Molly Farrell where she learned about my marriage dreams, wedding details and style preferences. It was a sweet and sentimental conversation that, upon hanging up, made me feel like I had formed a new Memphis friend.

When entering the boutique doors on a Friday at 4:30 p.m., my busy work week hit me hard. However, the bridal floor hosted only me, mom, Julia, and a bottle of champagne–and that’s all I needed. Having the space to ourselves was a breath of fresh air, and Molly’s guidance was calm and poised as could be.

Molly walked me through the styles, pointed out the gowns’ subtleties, and graced my dressing room with limitless lace and frills. Though I had one look in mind (which I won’t disclose until March!), Molly pushed me to pick gowns outside of my comfort zone to twirl in and toy with. The modern, the Cinderella, the conservative — Maggie Louise had the best of them all. The tight bombshell dress was my sister’s favorite…But it frankly wasn’t “me!”

I won’t give away the final choice, but I can confidently say that it is so exceptionally stunning. I cannot wait to share my Maggie Louise selection — and I can’t express how happy I am to be a Maggie Louise bride!
