World ‘moves’ to Tanzania as solar eclipse occurs today

TANZANIANS and other international visitors will today witness the annular solar eclipse that will be witnessed in Rujewa and Wang’ing’ombe in Mbeya and Njombe regions respectively.

The two areas, according to astronomy experts, are the best sites for viewing the rare event in which the sun’s disk will change to a ring.

Experts say that the next eclipse in Tanzania is expected to occur after 15 years, thus this global astronomical event is expected to attract a number of scientists, researchers, celebrities and eclipse chasers within and outside the country.

The regional commissioners of the two regions in which the fascinating event will take place have guaranteed security for both local and international guests who will be visiting the areas.

Mbeya Regional Commissioner (RC) Mr Amos Makalla told the ‘Daily News’ yesterday that important measures have been put in place to ensure that people who will be visiting Rujewa in Mbarali District are safe and have access to basic needs from the area.

“Since this historical event will attract local and international visitors, the regional government has taken initiatives to upgrade infrastructures at the area to allow the visitors to enjoy their tour,” Mr Makalla said.

He called upon students across the country to visit Rujewa and witness the historical event which will be useful in their studies. “Students have been learning about solar eclipse theoretically, thus this event is an important opportunity for them to witness how it occurs.”

Mr Makalla noted that the last solar eclipse occurred in the country in 1977 while after the September 1 event the next solar eclipse will be expected to take place in 2035. “The regional leadership is committed to ensure that this event is successful and people returned to their homes safely,” Mr Makalla insisted.

On her part, Njombe Regional Commissioner (RC), Dr Rehema Nchimbi, said that although there have been several events of solar eclipse, but experts describe the one to take place today as historical, because the moon will cover the sun’s disk by between 95 per cent and 99 per cent.

“Although the solar eclipse will also be witnessed in other few areas, experts have identified Wang’ing’ombe in my region and Rujewa in Mbeya as the sites where solar eclipse will be clearly witnessed,” Ms Nchimbi said.

She said that her region has taken measures to create friendly environment for both local and international visitors including their safety. The RC said that as part of promoting domestic tourism, her office in collaboration with other authorities in the region had also conducted campaigns to attract more Tanzanians including students to take part in witnessing the astronomical phenomenon.

According to Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB), the annual solar eclipse will occur from 10:17am to 1:56pm where people in Tanzania will witness first-hand the sun go evening-dim at midday as more than 90 per cent of the sun will be covered by the moon in a partial solar eclipse leaving the sun as a thin crescent.

TTB said the annual eclipse will be seen as a thin bright ring for hundreds of thousands of people living within a 100 kilometre band crossing Southern Tanzania from Congo into Katavi, Mbeya, Ruvuma, to Masasi and out to Mozambique.

Addressing reporters recently, the TTB Acting Managing Director, Mr Philip Chitaunga, said the unique event is crucial for the board to market tourists attractions in the country, particularly in the Southern Highlands. He said that the event can be exploited by students and teachers to learn about the occurrence of annual solar eclipses, which is taught theoretically in schools.

“We will continue striking you and targeting you in your country and abroad in response to your oppression of the people of Palestine, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia and the rest of the Muslim lands that did not survive your oppression,” Hamza said.

“As for the revenge by the Islamic nation for Sheikh Osama, may Allah have mercy on him, it is not revenge for Osama the person but it is revenge for those who defended Islam.”

Osama bin Laden was killed at his Pakistani hideout by U.S. commandos in 2011 in a major blow to the militant group which carried out the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Documents recovered from bin Laden’s compound and published by the United States last year alleged that his aides tried to reunite the militant leader with Hamza, who had been held under house arrest in Iran.Hamza, now in his mid-twenties, was at his father’s side in Afghanistan before the 9/11 attacks and spent time with him in Pakistan after the U.S.-led invasion pushed much of al Qaeda’s senior leadership there, according to the Brookings Institution. Introduced by the organization’s new chief Ayman al-Zawahiri in an audio message last year, Hamza provides a younger voice for the group whose aging leaders have struggled to inspire militants around the world galvanized by Islamic State.

NASA’s Spacecraft Juno Begins Orbit Of Jupiter

After a tense, 35-minute engine burn, NASA’s Juno spacecraft successfully began its orbit of Jupiter late Monday evening, the pivotal moment of the space agency’s five-year long venture to reach the planet.

Hundreds of millions of miles away, the $1.1 billion mission all hung on a single 35-minute engine burn — a maneuver that slowed the spacecraft during its final approach and allowed the craft to sink into orbit around the solar system’s largest planet.

“Jupiter is spectacular from afar and will be absolutely breathtaking from close up,” Scott Bolton, principal investigator of Juno from the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, said in a statement ahead of Monday night’s events.

The solar-powered spacecraft entered the gas giant’s dangerous orbit Monday, just seconds behind schedule, to raucous applause from those gathered at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

NASA reported less than an hour later that Juno had turned its solar panels towards the sun for power, the last crucial move undertaken during the initial phase of the orbit.

The 35-minute engine burn, which began at 11:18 p.m. EST, slowed Juno by 1,212 mph, enough so it could be captured by the planet’s gravitational pull. Still, Juno was traveling some 130,000 mph before it reached Jupiter.

“We’ve only got one shot,” Guy Beutelschies, director of space exploration systems at Lockheed Martin, the company that built and operates Juno, told NPR. “If we miss this flyby, we’re assuming the mission’s over.” But the Fourth of July arrival proved successful.

Now, Juno will continue a lengthy dance with Jupiter, circling the giant planet 37 times over a 20-month period and swinging as close as 2,600 miles of the planet’s cloud tops, NASA said. It will mark the first time a spacecraft has orbited Jupiter’s poles, NASA added, “providing new answers to ongoing mysteries about the planet’s core, composition and magnetic fields.”

The mission is also expected to provide scientists with a better understanding of our solar system as a whole. “It just so happens, deep inside this body are the secrets we’re after,” a voice-over says in the NASA video below. “Secrets about our early solar system.” The heavily armored spacecraft has been built to withstand the planet’s extreme, radiation-rich environment. But the costly mission is full of unknowns.

“When you sail into terra incognita, that is always going to make you sit on the edge of your seat, because you don’t really know for sure what you’re facing,” Heidi Becker of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory told National Geographic. Juno is expected to begin scientific observations following a final engine burn on Oct. 19, after a lengthy phase in which the spacecraft will be captured in the planet’s orbit and all scientific instruments will be turned on. The spacecraft is set to meet a fiery death when it burns up in Jupiter’s atmosphere in February 2018.

Snipers shot and killed four police officers “ambush-style” after a Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas Thursday night, according to Dallas police. At least seven other police officers and one civilian were also injured in the shooting.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown said early Friday morning three suspects were in custody and police were still in negotiations with another suspect, who was being uncooperative and at times exchanging gunfire with officers in a parking garage.

“He told negotiators that the end is coming, and he is going to hurt and kill more of us,” Brown said at a press conference, noting the man had also claimed there were bombs around the structure. “We are being very careful in our tactics so that we don’t injure any of our officers in harm’s way.”

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings added that downtown Dallas would still be considered “an active crime scene” going into Friday, and urged people to check the city’s news updates on which areas to avoid. The FAA also temporarily instituted a temporary flight restriction over the area.

Police said earlier in the night that one suspect had been taken into custody following a shootout with Dallas SWAT officers, and the bomb squad was securing a “suspicious package” found near him. A “person of interest” whose photo DPD had initially circulated turned himself in, according to the department. All signs pointed to the demonstration having been peaceful throughout the evening. The DPD Twitter account included posts about “men, women, boys and girls” gathered in solidarity, while other photos show officers posing with marchers, including a state senator.

Nurse arrested after having sex with dead bodies

A nurse was arrested and charged after he was caught having sex with dead bodies at a hospital, according to press reports in California.

The nurse in California, was charged with necrophilia after being caught committing a sexual act with a dead woman.

61-year-old Alejandro Razo was arrested Sunday at the Sherman Oaks Hospital, where he works. Security guards called police after they discovered that a deceased patient had somehow been violated by an employee of the hospital, Los Angeles Police Department Lieutenant Andy Neiman said.

It is still unclear how the suspect was captured, but he was charged with necrophilia and hit with a
violation of a Health and Safety Code.

"It is a very delicate case because you're dealing with someone who is deceased, a loved one of someone who really could not even defend herself, so it is our duty to fight for them," Neiman said.

Committing necrophilia was not a crime in California until 2004. Razo faces up to three years in prison if convicted.

He reportedly paid a $20,000 bond, in order to be free pending the outcome of his trial.

A 12-year-old girl who sued her mother, won $256,000 - according to court proceedings.

Faith Varden-Carberry, who sued her parents and the Motor Insurance Bureau of Ireland, has been awarded $256,000 following the car accident that killed her younger sister Ava and friend Michaela Logan, in 2007.

The settlement agreement was reached in the Supreme Court on Wednesday. Varden-Carberry, originally from Longford, sued her parents and MIBI through her grandfather Anthony Carberry.

In 2007, Mary Carberry, an alcoholic, blacked out drunk while driving with three children in her car. The younger sister, Ava, who was 6 years old at the time, and her friend Michaela Logan, died after the car went off the road and crashed into a muddy embankment outside Edgeworthstown, Co Longford.

Faith, wearing a seatbelt in the back seat, suffered severe physical and emotional trauma. She was confined to a spinal cast for two months, and went through months of therapy to help her cope with the tragedy.

Mary Carberry had been excluded from driving at the time of the accident, resulting from a previous conviction. However, with two young daughters, she needed a way to get to and from school. Carberry had her daughters ask their father Thomas Varden, whom Mary had little or no relation to, for help.

Varden agreed to buy a car for the family on the condition that Mary did not drive it. However, Mary Carberry did not adhere to the condition, and ultimately caused the death of the two young children.

While young Faith had brought charges against her father as well, they were later dropped, leaving only her mother and MIBI responsible. Mary Carberry was sentenced to six years in prison with two years suspended, and MIBI was found by the court on Wednesday that they were responsible for a payment of $256,000 to Faith.

Pets all over the world are a major part of family life.

Now, a pregnant woman was allowed to take her dog to a hospital to help the woman throughout her labor and birth.

The maternity ward at St. Michael's Hospital in England, allowed the woman to take her dog inside the delivery room, “because it is a certified therapy dog.”

The presence of the dog was discussed and agreed upon in advance with the hospital’s infection control team giving their approval that it could be in the room during labor as therapy for the woman. A thorough cleaning of the delivery room was done after the dog, named Barney, left.

Head of midwifery at St. Michael's Hospital, Sarah Windfeld, said: "Barney is a certified Pets as Therapy or PAT dog, and it regularly visits patients in the hospital."

Pets as Therapy, is a charity founded in 1983. Volunteers take their own friendly dogs and cats that have been tested and vaccinated, to visit hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, schools and more to provide therapeutic visits for those in need.

To date, there are about 4,500 active dogs and 108 cats in the Pets as Therapy program in the United Kingdom. Each week, these calm friendly dogs and cats give more than 130,000 people, both young and old, the pleasure and opportunity to hug and talk to them.

Google and Tesla agree autonomous vehicles will make streets safer, and both are racing toward a driverless future. But when Google tested its self-driving car prototype on employees a few years ago, it noticed something that would take it down a different path from Tesla.

Once behind the wheel of the modified Lexus SUVs, the drivers quickly started rummaging through their bags, fiddling with their phones and taking their hands off the wheel — all while traveling on a freeway at 60 mph.

“Within about five minutes, everybody thought the car worked well, and after that, they just trusted it to work,” Chris Urmson, the head of Google’s self-driving car program, said on a panel this year. “It got to the point where people were doing ridiculous things in the car.”

After seeing how people misused its technology despite warnings to pay attention to the road, Google has opted to tinker with its algorithms until they are human-proof. The Mountain View, Calif., firm is focusing on fully autonomous vehicles — cars that drive on their own without any human intervention and, for now, operate only under the oversight of Google experts.

Tesla, on the other hand, released a self-driving feature called autopilot to customers in a software update last year. The electric carmaker, led by tech billionaire Elon Musk, says those who choose to participate in the “public beta phase” will help refine the technology and make streets safer sooner.

Tesla drivers already had logged some 130 million miles using the feature before a fatal crash in Florida in May made it the subject of a preliminary federal inquiry made public on Thursday.

The divergent approaches reflect companies with different goals and business strategies. Tesla’s rapid-fire approach is in line with its image as a small but significant auto industry disruptor, while Google — a tech company from whom no one expects auto products — has the luxury of time.

With the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration yet to release guidelines for self-driving technology, existing regulation has little influence on corporate tactics.

That makes Google’s caution even more surprising, as it has long operated with the Silicon Valley ethos of launching products fast and experimenting even faster. But in developing self-driving cars, the company has splintered from its software roots. It is taking its time to perfect a revolutionary technology that will turn Google into a company that helps people get around the real world the way it helps them navigate the Internet.

“I’ve had people say, ‘Look, my Windows laptop crashes every day — what if that’s my car?’ ” Urmson said at a conference held by The Times on transportation issues. “How do you make sure you don’t have a ‘blue screen of death,’ so to speak?”

The stakes are simply higher with self-driving cars than with operating systems and apps, Urmson said. That’s why Google has yet to bring its self-driving technology to consumer vehicles even though it’s been in development for seven years and logged more than 1.5 million test miles.

Fatal Tesla crash exposes lack of \regulation
over autopilot technology

Tesla insists its vehicles go through vigorous in-house testing and are proved safe before they reach consumers. And, according to the company, putting them on the roads makes the software — which learns from experience — only better.

“We are continuously and proactively enhancing our vehicles with the latest advanced safety technology,” a Tesla spokeswoman said via email.

And there’s truth to that, said Jeff Miller, an associate professor in the Computer Engineering Department at USC, who said there is no way to stamp out every problem from technology before launching it. At some point, this kind of technology needs to be thrown into the real world.

“Every single program in the world has bugs in it,” he said. “You have imperfect human beings who have written the code, and imperfect human beings driving around the driverless cars. Accidents are going to happen.”

But this doesn’t mean these products shouldn’t launch.

“We have been testing the vehicles in labs for a good number of years now,” Miller said. “Like with airplanes, eventually you’re going to have that first flight with passengers on it.”

Getting the technology to work is only half the challenge, though. As Google learned when its employees took their hands off the wheel, the other half is ensuring that the technology is immune to human error.

It’s not enough for the technology in a vehicle to simply work as intended, said David Strickland, a former chief of the NHTSA who now leads the Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets, a group that includes Google, Volvo, Ford, Uber and Lyft. Part of the safety evaluation has to account for how the technology could be misused, and companies must build protections against that.

Tesla and other automakers have launched automated cruise control features with built-in sound alerts if a driver’s hands are not detected on the wheel. But these checks aren’t fool-proof, either.

“Having developed software and hardware products … I can point to the incredible inventiveness of customers in doing things you just never, ever considered possible, even when you tried to take the ridiculous and stupid into account,” said Paul Reynolds, a former vice president of engineering at wireless charging technology developer Ubeam. “If customer education is the only thing stopping your product from being dangerous in normal use, then your real problem is a company without proper consideration for safety.”

Google and other automakers aim to solve the human problem by achieving the highest level of autonomy possible. The NHTSA ranks self-driving cars based on the level they cede to the vehicle, with 1 being the lowest and 5 the highest.

Tesla’s autopilot feature is classified as level 2, which means it is capable of staying in the center of a lane, changing lanes and adjusting speed according to traffic. Google is aiming for levels 4 and 5 — the former requires a driver to input navigation instructions, but relinquishes all other control to the vehicle, while level 5 autonomy does not involve a driver at all.

Volvo plans to launch a pilot program for its level 4 autonomous car next year. BMW has signaled ambitions to develop levels 3, 4 and 5 autonomous vehicles.

The problem with level 2, critics say, is that it’s just autonomous enough to give drivers the false sense that the vehicle can drive itself, which can lead to careless behavior.

Tesla disputes this — its owner’s manual details the feature’s limitations — and it says drivers are actually clamoring for the product. Tesla executive Jonathan McNeil said in a February investor call that the autopilot feature is “one of the core stories of what’s going on here at Tesla.”

The sudden rollout of the tool in October is in line with a company that has made a name for itself as a boundary-pusher that appeals to those willing to take a risk on technology with world-changing potential.

Its regular software updates bring flashy, first-of-their-kind functions to cars already on the road — a way to build loyalty among current owners and court new ones. Indeed, 40-year-old Joshua Brown, who died when his Tesla Model S failed to detect a white big rig against the bright sky, posted two dozen videos showing the autopilot technology in action.

Analysts aren’t surprised that Tesla is moving faster than Alphabet Inc. — Google’s parent company and the second most-valuable publicly traded company on American markets. Cars, after all, are Tesla’s business.

Google makes money from its search and advertising business and has its hands in hardware, software, email and entertainment. Self-driving vehicles are one of its “moonshots” — ambitious projects with no expectation for short-term profitability. They are lumped into Google X, a secretive arm of the company that has experimented with ideas such as using balloons to connect the world to Wi-Fi and the head-mounted gadget Google Glass.

The company has no plans to manufacture and sell its own vehicles. Instead, it likely will partner with automakers, hoping its autonomous-driving software will come to dominate the market the same way its Android operating system dominates the smartphone industry.

“Google has the time, and they can develop things quietly,” said Michelle Krebs, a senior analyst with Auto Trader, “whereas Tesla is under some pressure to build this car company and start making a profit.”

As self-driving technology becomes commonplace, regulators, automakers and consumers will have to decide whether rolling out early products is worth the potential risk, said Shannon Vallor, a philosophy professor at Santa Clara University who studies the intersection of ethics and technology.

“It is far from obvious that the ends here do justify the beta testing of this technology on public roads without better safeguards,” Vallor said.

An Indonesian man is in search of a cure for bubble-like tumors that caused havoc on his body - if not for himself than for his children, who fear they will be suffering a genetic disease.

Wisnu Chandra, nicknamed the "bubble skin man", wearing a ski mask and sunglasses to hide his appearance on the rare occasions when he walks outside.

Now, desperate for help, the 57-year-old is making public his condition. His plight will be presented in a one-hour documentary debuts Wednesday on The Learning Channel.

"People have never been teased or ridiculed me directly, but look at me and avoid me. Most people act very strangely around me," said Wisnu last fall, according to the news media.

"It makes me feel very insecure and angry when people treat me differently," he added. He began to feel the bumps on his skin when he was 19, he said. He married a few years later, and his condition intensified ever since.

At the age of 32, it spread all over his face, according to reports.

The doctors told Wisnu the tumors were benign, possibly caused by a genetic disorder caused by abnormalities in the nervous system, reported the news media.

At first, he was prescribed different types of creams, but they did not work.
Meanwhile, he and his wife, Nanik Tri Haryani, had four children together.

He was sure she would leave him."But I refused," said his wife, according to the news media. "Seeing him get on with life despite his changing appearance was, for me, a sign of great strength, not weakness."

A woman was arrested, charged and convicted of fraud after persuading naive men to send her thousands of dollars by posing as a young woman, prosecutors in the United Kingdom said.

Now, the 48-year-old woman who set up fake profiles on a dating

website and conned seven victims out of thousands of dollars, has been given an eighteen month sentence suspended for two years when she appeared before the Grimsby Crown Court.

Jane Deans pleaded guilty to seven charges of fraud by false representation at an earlier hearing.

Deans admitted that she set up a fake profile in the name of Nikki O'Brian, and claimed to be a slim and beautiful 24-year-old trainee nurse with personal problems and financial difficulties.

The men responded and sent her money, totaling over 34,000 pounds ($52,231), which Nikki directed to be paid into her aunt's account, which in fact belonged to Deans.

CPS Crown Advocate Jeremy Evans said: “Deans mercilessly took advantage of her victims and conned them out of thousands of dollars in the process. This case highlights the dangers of Internet use - never offer money to those you meet on the Internet - things may not be always as they seem, as this case all too clearly demonstrates.”

Istanbul airport attackers 'Russian, Uzbek and Kyrgyz'

The three men who carried out Tuesday's deadly attack on Istanbul's Ataturk airport were all from parts of the former USSR, Turkish sources say. One is said to be from Russia's North Caucasus region and the others from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Turkey believes so-called Islamic State (IS) was behind the suicide gun and bomb attack that left 44 people dead and some 240 injured. Police detained at least 13 suspects in Istanbul and more in Izmir on Thursday. Family, friends and colleagues of victims gathered at the airport on Thursday for a memorial service as funerals continued.

One image on Turkish media purported to show the three men together at the airport moments before the attack, wearing dark jackets and carrying holdalls. Two are wearing caps, one is smiling.

An unnamed Turkish official confirmed for Reuters news agency the dead attackers' countries of origin after Turkish media reports. Some agencies named one of the men as Osman Vadinov, said to have crossed into Turkey from the IS stronghold of Raqqa in Syria in 2015.

Reports that he was a Chechen have been denied by an unnamed police source in the North Caucasus, Russia's Interfax news agency reports. The organiser of the attack has been named by Turkish media as Akhmed Chatayev, a Chechen believed to have acted as an IS recruiter, who is on a US counter-terror sanctions list. His fate was not immediately clear.

IS has long recruited members from mainly Muslim parts of the former USSR, with Russian President Vladimir Putin putting the overall number at between 5,000 and 7,000 in October.

Meanwhile, another Turkish official told AFP news agency: "Earlier today, the police raided 16 locations to detain 13 IS suspects, including three foreign nationals."

Turkish media said counter-terrorism police had raided several areas of Istanbul - including Pendik, Basaksehir and Sultanbeyli.

Arrests were also reported in the western coastal city of Izmir, where at least nine people were detained, accused of financing, recruiting and providing logistical support to IS. Separately, Turkish media reported that security forces had killed two suspected IS militants on the Syrian border last Saturday. They said one had been planning an attack on the capital Ankara or the city of Adana.

Detailing the attack, Mr Yildirim said the three men had wanted to pass through the security system but on seeing the controls "took their weapons out of their suitcases and opened fire at random at the security check". One attacker detonated his explosives downstairs in the arrivals terminal, Turkish officials said.

The second went upstairs and set off his explosives there while the third waited outside as passengers fled. He then detonated his explosives, causing the most casualties. A Kalashnikov assault rifle, a handgun and two grenades were found on the bodies, Turkish media said.

Some 240 people were injured, dozens of whom remain in critical condition in hospital. Dozens of anxious friends and relatives remain camped outside Istanbul's Bakirkoy hospital, waiting for news.

It is now known that of the 44 people killed, 24 were Turkish, three were Saudis and two Iraqis. In addition, China, Jordan, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, Iran and Ukraine each lost one citizen, and two Palestinians were killed. Funerals began on Wednesday, including that of Muhammed Eymen Demirci, who landed a job on the ground services crew in May after a year unemployed, texting a friend saying "I got the job bro!" Tunisian doctor Fathi Bayoudh had reportedly been in Turkey for some weekstrying to secure the release of his son, who had been detained for allegedly joining IS. Marvan Melhim and his wife, Nisreen, both work in Saudi Arabia, and had arrived with their three-year-old daughter.

"We heard shooting from a distance," said Marvan. "The explosion went off. I found my wife bleeding and my daughter too." Nisreen died in hospital shortly afterwards.A friend of Serkan Turk said the physical education teacher had rushed to the site of the first explosion to help the wounded, but was killed by a later blast.

Strengthening the Referral System through Mobile Phone Networking

A new initiative is being launched today, 24 June 2016, to strengthen the referral system in Dar es Salaam and improve communication between health facilities, ensuring mothers and newborns are able to access quality treatment and care when they need it.

The Dar es Salaam Regional Health Management Team, in collaboration with CCBRT, are tackling the problem of ineffective communications between dispensaries, health centres and hospitals – which can result in uncoordinated patient referrals and delays in treatment and care – by harnessing mobile phone technology and launching a Closed User Group (CUG).

Phones will be connected in 23 facilities and 7 ambulances, as well as to 3 District Medical Offices and the Regional Health Management Team Coordinator. This will allow representatives from low-level and high-level facilities within the CUG to enter into two-way communication to inform staff about patients in transit, seek consultation advice on patient management, provide clinical histories, assist with collective decision making based on agreed standards and communicate with ambulances directly.

Phone users from the 23 facilities and 7 ambulance drivers received a 1-day orientation facilitated by CCBRT on the practical use of phones, as well as criteria for referral. The CUG will also help to strengthen the wider system by informing and educating other facilities on the progress of the iniaitive within the 23 connected facilities through Whatsapp messages and pictures.

This initiative to improve referral communication between health facilities is made possible by the generous support of Vodafone Foundation through a private/public partnership with USAID/PEPFAR. Additional programme support is provided by Global Affairs Canada. Vodacom Tanzania provided in-kind support. CCBRT is tackling the challenge of maternal and newborn mortality by engaging in an extensive Maternal & Newborn Health Capacity Building Programme in 23 sites across Dar es Salaam, including training, provision of supplies and equipment and renovation of facilities among some of its activities; alongside the construction of CCBRT’s Maternity & Newborn Hospital, which will act as a high-risk referral hospital for mother and baby on its opening in early 2018.

The referral strengthening initiative is part of second national plan (One Plan ll) which aims to see by the end 2020 a strengthened referral system throughout Tanzania. Reducing delays and inefficiencies in referrals, particularly in emergency situations, is critical to the Government of Tanzania’s aim of reducing maternal and newborn deaths.

The Pastor has remained controversial for several years for his inexplicable powers to heal all sorts of incurable diseases, including HIV/AIDS, cancer and paralysis.

Families are frantically visiting Lagos hospitals and morgues to search for loved ones. Rescue efforts have reportedly been hampered by church officials who are not co-operating. But the church put out a statement yesterday denying this. It said it was collaborating with all authorities, including the SA government.

The church statement said: “It is sad that inaccurate reports are coming from some quarters that we are not co-operating with the rescue teams and other agencies in collating information and providing assistance.

“The church has provided assistance when and where required and continues to do so – good Christians are good citizens.”

Sapa reports Mzansi’s high commissioner in Nigeria, Lulu Mnguni, saying there are 265 South African survivors. There were 96 injured South Africans but now there were only 29 in hospital, including a three-year-old.

Mnguni said 17 South Africans were still unaccounted for. Joshua’s assistants said he was in a meeting and they didn’t know when he would be available. The church has blamed the tragedy on an aircraft flying around the building, alleging it was an attack on Joshua.

The admittedly "crazy" massage therapist, who goes by the name Jasmine Tridevil, told an Orlando radio station in a bizarre interview that she had the plastic surgery because she doesn't want to date anymore.

"Well I am crazy," she told the "The News Junkie" show last week. "Crazy people don't know they are crazy, so technically since I know I'm crazy I'm not crazy."

She said she had to see countless doctors before finding one who would do the surgery. The procedure cost $20,000, she told the radio station. Tridevil has aspirations to be a reality star, and hopes to get a show on MTV.

IT took Khanyisile Masina two years to finally dump her abusive lover.
And she was right to be scared. In a jealous rage, her boyfriend Moses Mhlanga stormed into her room with a machete and attacked her and her eight-month-old child, Phumlani.

“He felt that I should leave town because I wasn’t dating him. He forced his way into my room and attacked me with the machete. The first blow landed on the back of my head. I tried to block the blows with my hands and arms, with disastrous results,” she said.

Convinced they were both dead, he fled into the bush where he hanged himself from a tree. Khanyisile woke up in hospital the following day. She and Phumlani had been saved, but she had lost both her hands and arms, while her son lost the use of his left eye. That was in March 2003.

Today, Khanyisile from Bed-Is-Good near Dundonald, Mpumalanga is 34 years old and Phumlani is nine. Moses is dead but Khyanyisile is still helpless.

“I cannot bath or go to the toilet by myself. Do you know how humiliating it is to pay someone to help you wipe your own behind?” she asked.

Khanyisile said an artificial hands could give her back her life but it costs as much as R50 000. The artificial hand she got from the Mpumalanga Department of Health is plastic without any practical use. It just gives people the impression that she has a hand.

“Daily Sun has helped many people. I’m hoping SunPower can shine on me too,” she said.

Regular Marijuana Use Found To Have A Negative Impact On Teen Brains

Psychologists investigating the public health consequences of marijuana legalization have found a link between frequent cannabis use and cognitive decline, inattentiveness, memory decay and decreased IQ in teenagers.

The findings, which were presented recently during the American Psychological Association’s 122nd Annual Convention, found that brain imaging studies of regular marijuana users revealed significant changes in their brain structure, particularly when it comes to adolescents.

According to Dr. Krista Lisdahl, director of the brain imaging and neuropsychology lab at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, those scans revealed abnormalities in gray matter (the part of the brain associated with intelligence) in 16- to 19-year-old teenagers who had increased their cannabis use over the past year.

Those results remained even after researchers controlled for variables such as serious medical conditions, prenatal exposure to drugs and learning disabilities, she added. That could be problematic, given that recent research indicates that marijuana use among high school seniors had climbed from 2.4 percent in 1993 to 6.5 percent in 2012, that 31 percent of young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 reported using the drug in the last month.

“It needs to be emphasized that regular cannabis use, which we consider once a week, is not safe and may result in addiction and neurocognitive damage, especially in youth,” Dr. Lisdahl said in a statement Saturday. “When considering legalization, policymakers need to address ways to prevent easy access to marijuana and provide additional treatment funding for adolescent and young adult users.”

Citing a 2012 longitudinal study that followed over 1,000 participants from birth to age 38, Dr. Lisdahl noted that men and women who become addicted to marijuana can lose an average of six IQ points by adulthood.

Her presentation, “Neurocognitive Consequences of Chronic Marijuana Use: Preventing Early Onset Is Critical,” was one of three at the conference’s “Considering Cannabis? Potential Public Health Implications of Marijuana Legalization” symposium, held Saturday at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington DC.

Also at the conference, Dr. Alan Budney of Darthmouth College warned that some legalized forms of marijuana contained higher research levels of THC – the substance responsible for most of its psychological effects. In his presentation, entitled “Clinical Epidemiology, Characteristics, Services and Outcomes for Youth With Cannabis-Use Disorders,” he explained that THC can increase the risk of depression, anxiety and psychosis in regular pot users.

“Recent studies suggest that this relationship between marijuana and mental illness may be moderated by how often marijuana is used and potency of the substance,” he explained. “Unfortunately, much of what we know from earlier research is based on smoking marijuana with much lower doses of THC than are commonly used today.”

People’s willingness to accept legalized medical marijuana has also had an impact on how risky adolescents perceive the substance to be, Dr. Bettina Friese of the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation in California explained in her seminar, “Is Legalization of Medical Marijuana Related to Youths’ Marijuana Beliefs and Behaviors?”

Dr. Friese presented results of a 2013 study of over 17,000 Montana teenagers that discovered marijuana use among teens was higher in counties where a greater percentage of people had voted to legalize the substance for medicinal purposes in 2004. Furthermore, teens living in those counties were less likely to view cannabis use as dangerous, suggesting that a more accepting attitude of medical marijuana could have an even stronger impact on teens than the actual number of medical marijuana licenses available, she added.

In February researchers reported that legalizing the use of marijuana resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of children requiring emergency medical attention for exposure to the drug. That study found that unintentional marijuana exposures to children under the age of 10 had increased 30.3 percent from 2005 to 2011 in states where its use had been legalized.

“Pediatricians, toxicologists and emergency physicians need to be willing to advocate for the safety of children to lawmakers as this burgeoning industry expands across the US,” said lead author Dr. George Sam Wang of the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center in Colorado. “As more states decriminalize marijuana, lawmakers should consider requirements – such as child-resistant packaging, warning labels and public education – to reduce the likelihood of ingestion by young children.”

A diplomatic spat escalated Wednesday as Sudan summoned the U.S. ambassador over Washington's attempts to assist a mother who had been sentenced to death for refusing to denounce Christianity. Meriam Ibrahim, 27, was freed from death row on Monday but just one day later Sudan's National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) re-arrested her at Khartoum's airport. The NISS, a shadowy and feared institution, said on its Facebook page that Ibrahim and her family had been attempting to travel to the U.S. with documents from the embassy of South Sudan, which split from its northern neighbor in 2011 after years of civil war. It said she was carrying a U.S. visa, and that her attempts to use the documents were considered a "criminal offense."

Ibrahim's husband, Daniel Wani, is a naturalized U.S. citizen who said upon his wife's release that he wanted to start a new life in the U.S. The State Department said Tuesday that officials were working with the Sudanese government "to secure [the family's] safe and swift departure from Sudan." Siku chache baada ya kumalizika kwa tuzo za MTV MAMA 2014, nyota wa muziki wa kizazi kipya Diamond Platnumz amesini mkataba mpya wa kufanya wimbo na Mafikizolo yaani (collaboration Song) ndani ya studio ya Kalawa Jazzmee inayomilikiwa na Oscar Hlongwane aka OSKIDO ambaye ni Director na Producer mkuu ndani ya studio hiyo lebel hiyo ina simamia wanamuziki wengi walio chini ya recording label hiyo baadhi yao wakiwa ni Mafikizolo, TKzee, Professor, Trompies, Malaika, na wengineo wengi ndani na nje ya Afrika.

Katika picha ya pamoja ni Theo Kgosikwe, Diamond Platnumz na Nhlanhla Sibongile Nciza ndani ya studio ya Kalawa Jazzmee.

Oskido akiwa ameshikilia tuzo walioshinda ya Best Collabo MTV MAMA 2014, iliyofanyika hivi karibuni ndani ya ukumbi wa ICC centre Durban, Kwazulu Natal.

MTV MAMA 2014: Mafikizolo wabeba tuzo kubwa, orodha kamili ya washindi

Safari ndefu ya ya mchakato wa tuzo za MTV (MAMA2014) Ulioanza rasmi April 16 baada ya kutangazwa majina ya nominees na kuanza kupigiwa kura imefikia ukingoni June 8 ICC Arena, Durba Afrika Kusini.

Kwa mujibu ya matokeo ya mchakato mzima, Tanzania hatubahatika kupata tuzo hata moja kati ya tuzo mbili alizokuwa anawania Diamond Platinumz (Best Male Artist na Best Collaboration).

Davido ndiye aliyebeba tuzo ya Best Male Artist na tuzo nyingine kubwa ya Artist of The Year. Na Tiwa Savage aliipeleka Nigeria tuzo ya Best Female.

Kundi la Mafikizolo kutoka Afrika Kusini ndilo lililonyakua tuzo kubwa zaidi usiku huo, tuzo ya Wimbo bora wa mwaka na wimbo wao maarufu wa Khona waliomshirikisha Uhuru. Pia likashinda tuzo ya kundi bora (Best Group).

Mafikizolo wanawania pia tuzo za BET katika kipengele cha Best International Act.

Moja kati ya surprise zilizowavuta wengi ni pale D’Banj alipoungana na Trey Songz jukwaani.

Macho ya watanzania na nguvu kubwa inaelekezwa BET ambako Diamond anawania tuzo ana kila dalili ya kuwazidi wenzake.
