BRIEF HISTORY ABOUT WORLD RENOWNED MRIDANGASAILESWARI TEMPLE.

Muzhakkunnu Mridanga shaileswary Temple is one of the most famous Devi (DURGA) temples in Kerala. The lady form of KADHAKALI originated from Muzhakkunnu by Kottayam rajavu. This temple is believed to be the family temple of Veera Pazassirajah. By rail, one can reach the temple either via Kannur or Thalasserry railway station. From Muzhakannu, only road travel is available.

Mridanga Saileswari Temple, situated in Kannur, a land of Theyyam and Thira glorifying the cultural pomp and tradition of Kerala, is believed to belong to the series of 108 Durga Temples set up by Saint Parasuraman.

Mridanga Saileswari Devi is renowned to shower her blessings to all those who pray earnestly before her, lighting the ghee lamp. The diety, Goddess Durga is omnipotent, easy to please, demolisher of evils and foes, and is celebrated as one who grants all the wishes of devotees instantly!

The temple nomenclature revolves round Mridanga, acclaimed to be the mother of all musical instruments, originated in Devaloga or heaven. Devi is presumed to have originated in the form of Mridanga and the reverberation of her voice provided the name Muzhakkunnu, the hill that echoes. MridangaSailam stands for the drum hill and the Goddess seemed to have appeared on the south eastern premises of the temple. Lord Parasurama captivated the essence of Devi into an idol and founded the temple in MridangaSailam or Muzhakkunnu.

It is worth mentioning that Kathakali took shape here in this temple premises by the acclaimed king of Kottayam Thampuran, who got influenced by the Ramanattam of KottarakkaraThampuran. Kottayam Thampuran penned the texts of Bakavadham, Kirmeeravadham, KalyanaSaugandhikam and Nirathakavachakalakeyavadham in this temple.

The first lines of Kathakali seeking God’s blessings, speak out the relevance and fame of Mridanga Saileswari and echoes all through the world! A popular myth related to Kathakali, prevailing here is that when Thampuran could not properly visualise the ‘lady figure’ in Kathakali, he meditated for a while. The Goddess appeared in the temple pond, exhibited a lady form and till now without a change, this feminine attire is employed in Kathakali. The clan diety of Kerala Lion Veera Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, Goddess Porkkali stays in trio-state here-that of Saraswathy, the goddess of education, Lakshmi-the goddess of plenty and Kali-the evil destroyer Goddess. In whatever form we appeal to her, Devi appears is in the same shape and structure! The name Porkkali came into existence as sacrifice was offered to Devi by kings before setting out for warfares. This was the custom of all Purali kings as the Goddess was their family diety as expressed in black and white in ‘KokilaSandesham’. The sacrifice and the trance experience happened in the cave temple situated west of the main shrine. ‘Kali’ or blessings for ‘Por’ or war later contributed a new title to Devi as Porkali. The Guha temple believed to be the pivot of all Porkkali temples of South India is now no more, just the remnants remain. We all must anew take pledge on behalf of the Goddess and dedicate ourselves for the renovation of the temple and reconstruction of the Guha temple bringing back its past pomp and glory, lifting it to the forefront to be acclaimed as the best temple of the world. Let us take this as our mission, as it is the need of the times and surrender ourselves for its fruitful enactment!

Bus to Mridanga Sailwshweri temple from Iritty.

The route from Thalasserry goes through Koothuparanba towards Mattanur- take a right turn at Uruvachal junction, about 4 km before Mattanur. A ride of 14 km through this road via Thillankerry will take you to Muzhakunnu. The temple is about 200 meters away.

From Kannur move to Mattanur from here to Uliyil ( about 9 km). From Uliyil town take a right turn to reach Thillankerry, and then to Muzhakunnu town.

From Taliparamba go towards to iritty via Sreekandapuram after iritty town left turn from Pazhanjeri mukk Bus stop towards peravaoor - Nedumpoil Road and after 7kms from kakkayangad town take left turn towards uruvachal road. The temple is about 2.7 kms away.

Passage to the edakkal caves are very steep and narrow and once you reach the top of the cave you can view the top view of Wayanad hills. Earlier people used to go for trekking in the ‘Ambukuthi Hills’ from the top of the second cave. Now banned by Govenrnment.

Edakkal Rock engravings are invaluable treasures of the world heritage. The site was first reported in the journal 'Indian Antiquary 'in 1901 in an illustrated article written by F.Fawcett, the superintent of police of the erstwhile Malabar District.

Rock art in the form of paintings are there in plenty.but engravings in edakkal caves are unique. The edakkal engravings represent various objects and cultural signs of the past societies. The drawings include figures of humans and animals , trees, wheels, carts and also symbols, letters and numeric signs Human figures depicted in different styles are the most important items among the drawings. Wheels carts etc are also depicted in different styles.Some of the newly found figures are comparable with signs and symbols reported from various Chalcolithic and Bronze age sites of the sub continent.

There are two caves one above the other, the engravings are all on the upper cave, The upper cave is evidently supported by the lower one.carrying capacity of these caves is naturally limited. Therefore number of visitors to the monument at a time has to be restricted according to the capacity of the rock formation.

Impairment of any kind of this monument cannot be repaired. it is our earnest responsibility to preserve this most valuable world heritage without any damage

Kottiyoor Temple / Kottiyoor Mahadeva Temple is a very famous Siva temple in Kottiyoor, Kannur District, on the bank of bavali river.

The Lord of Kottiyoor Temple is known as Kottiyoor Perumal. Kottiyoor temple is also known as 'Varanasi of the South' (Dakshinakashi). There are 2 temples Akkare Kottiyoor and Ikkare Kottiyyoor (The Main Temple). Akkare Kottiyoor is opened only during the annual festival (ulsavam) "Vaisakha Maholsavam". During the Vaisakha Maholsavam the ikkare kottiyoor (the Main temple) will be closed.

It is believed that Prajapathy Daksha, father of Sathi Devi performed a Yaga at this place. Sathi Devi and her husband Lord Shiva was not invited for the yaga. Sathi Devi went to the yaga place to meet her father, but he insulted lord shiva and Sathi devi. she immedialtely jumbed into to yagna Fire and killed herself for the shame caused infront of all the guests. After this even Lord shiva out of anger came to the yaga place and opened his third eye (Thrikannu) and destroyed everything and King Dhaksha also died, Later, as per the request of Lord Vishnu and Brahma, Lord Shiva gave birth to Dhaksha and alowed him to complete the yaga. Dhaksha understood his mistake and he started worsiping lord shiva at this place and Lord shiva came infront of him in the form of Swayambhoo Lingam (idol). These are the beliefs about the Kottiyor temple.

This temple is different from other temples, The Diety in akkare kottiyyor is "Swayambhoo",(that which is created by its own) and opened for only 28 days in a year for the Vyshaka Maholsavam. Ilaneer Veppu or submitting tender coconuts before the deity is an main ritual during the festival. Thousands of tender coconuts brought by the devotees from different parts of malabar is submitted on the special day. The next day is Ilaneerattam. On this day, main priest pours these coconut water collected from the tender coconuts (ilaneer) on the idol.Womens are permitted to enter the akkare kottiyor for some particular days during the festival.

Main worship of Temple is Sree Muthappan, a Theyyam form which is performed daily morning between 5 a.m and 8 a.m. and evening between 6.30 and 8.30 p.m. The main offering to Muthappan theyyam is Toddy (Kallu) and Dry Fish (Unakku). Pujari of the temple is called Madayan and he is not from a brahmin family like other Hindu Temples. Muthappan Theyyam is usually performed by Vannan community of Kerala people from all religion visits Parassinikadavu, its Opened from morning 5:00 to night 9:00.
Dog is treated as Muthappans animal and considered as sacred. We can find many dogs in the temple premises.

Annual Festival Puthari Thiruvappana Maholsavam is celebrated during first of December.(Vrishchikam 16). festival is known as the harvest festival.

Kerala was divided into more than one hundred small principalities before the establishment of British power in India. These kingdoms were more or less self independent with its own traditional production and distribution system inclusive of trade and commerce. All these kingdoms were matrilineal originated under peculiar social-political and economical situation in Kerala. When all other matrilineal dynasties had their senior most male member as ruler, the Arakkal dynasty was headed by the senior most member irrespective of gender. If the ruler was male, he was popularly known as 'Ali Raja ' and if the ruler was a female , she was known as 'Arakkal Beebi'.

There are many stories relating to the origin of Arakkal family. Among these , the story related to the pilgrimage of Cheraman Perumal to Mecca has got prominence in the Arakkal family. Whatever may be the origin , the family records suggests that the continuous existence of the dynasty starts from 12th century AD. in the early years of its existence it was subordinate to the Kolathiri rulers and later Chirakkal rulers. But from 15th century independent and powerful thanks to its maritime enterprises. When the Portuguese came to Arakkal army and took Kannur Fort. Soon the ruler of Arakkal offered peace and entered into an agreement with the English.

The Arakkal family was forced to surrender the Kannur fort and had to pay a huge amount as compensation. The English also claimed Laccadive Islands which were possessed by the Arakkal Dynasty from the 15th century. The dispute lasted for more than 100 years. The final agreement was signed on 15th December 1908 by which the family was given an annual amount of Rs.23,000 as 'Malikhan'. The ruler was also given a title of respect as 'Sulthan'. However the rule of the dynasty finally came to a halt on 15th.August.1947. The same amount of MAlikhan is still given to the Arakkal family annually. The Arakkal Museum is arranged by the Department of Archaeology with the financial assistance provided by the Department of Tourism Govt. of Kerala. Different Varieties of heritage objects from the Royal Family of Arakkal are exhibited in this museum. The museum is managed by the trust including the family members of Arakkal. The old office and Durbar Hall of the Arakkal Kettu is converted as the museum. The Building complex known as Arakkal Kettu is a protected monument under the provisions of the protection of Archaeological remains and sites Act of 1968. This building was scientifically conserved by the Department of Archeology with the financial assistance of department of tourism, Govt of Kerala.

Bekal Fort or Bekal Kotta is the largest fort of kerala and one of the impotant archeological monument of India located at bekal, Kasargod.
Bekal fort is constructed by Sivappa Nayaka of Bednore in 1650AD. The fort was constructed for the defense requirements, The fort later became the military base of Tipu sulthan during his military assault to Malabar and after yars British East India company made it their headquarters of new taluk of South Canara district.
The structure of the fort is such that it can defend from enemies easily. The fort is spread around 40acres. The main unique features of the fort are The tunnel toward sea, the vast steps to the observation tower. From the tower we can have a view of near by cities like bekal,kanhangad,pallikara,Kottikulam.

Babia is daily feeded by the poojari and devotees also, but the feeding will be done by the poojari only . The ritual offerings can be offered at the counter with a minimal charge of just Rs.30. Babia doesnt eat anything, other than the food given by the temple poojaris.

Another main speciality of this temple is its Idiol which is different compared to other temples. The main idiol of the temple is not made of stone , copper or any other metal, Its made of a rare and a special composition called Kadu-Sarkara-Yogam,a mixture of more than 60 Ayurvedic materials.

കണ്ണൂര്‍ ജില്ലയിലെ മാവിലായി എന്ന സ്ഥലത്താണ് പ്രസിദ്ധമായ അടിയുത്സവം അരങ്ങേറുന്നത്. മേടം രണ്ടിന് കച്ചേരിക്കാവിലും മേടം നാലിന് മൂന്നാംപാലത്തിനു സമീപത്തുള്ള നിലാഞ്ചിറ വയലിലുമാണ് അടിയുടെ പൂരം അരങ്ങേറുന്നത്.

കച്ചേരിക്കാവില്‍ ബ്രാഹ്മണന്‍ ഈഴവപ്രമാണിയില്‍ നിന്നു അവില്‍പ്പൊതി വാങ്ങി തിങ്ങിനിറഞ്ഞ പുരുഷാരത്തിന് നടുവിലേക്ക് എറിഞ്ഞുകൊടുക്കുന്നു. അവില്‍ക്കൂടിനായി അടി തുടങ്ങുന്നു. 'മൂത്തകുര്‍വ്വാട്', 'ഇളയ കുര്‍വ്വാട്' എന്നിങ്ങനെ രണ്ടായി തിരിഞ്ഞാണ് അടി. കൈക്കോളന്‍മാര്‍ ആളുകളുടെ ചുമലില്‍ കയറി അന്യോന്യം പൊരുതുന്നു.

കച്ചേരിക്കാവിലും നിലാഞ്ചിറ വയലിലും അടി അരങ്ങേറുന്നതിനെപ്പറ്റി ഐതീഹ്യങ്ങളുണ്ട്. അതില്‍ ഒന്ന് ഇങ്ങനെ : ഇന്നത്തെ കടമ്പൂര്‍ അംശത്തിലെ 'ഒരികര' എന്ന പ്രദേശത്തെ കച്ചേരി ഇല്ലത്താണ്, ചെമ്പകശ്ശേരി കോവിലകത്ത് തമ്പുരാനും കുടുംബവും താമസിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ആചാരപ്രകാരം വിഷുപുലരിയില്‍ ഈഴവപ്രമാണിയായ 'വണ്ണാത്തിക്കണ്ടി തണ്ടയാന്‍' തമ്പുരാന് അവില്‍പ്പൊതി കാഴ്ചവെയ്ക്കുന്ന പതിവുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

തണ്ടയാന്‍ കാഴ്ചവെച്ച അവില്‍പ്പൊതിക്കായി തമ്പുരാന്റെ രണ്ടു മക്കളും തമ്മില്‍ ഉന്തും തള്ളും അടിയുമായി. കളി കാര്യമായതു കണ്ട് തമ്പുരാന്‍ തന്റെ കുലദൈവമായ ദൈവത്താറെ വിളിച്ച് ധ്യാനിച്ചു. ദൈവത്താര്‍ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു. പക്ഷേ, ദൈവത്തിന് കുട്ടികളുടെ ഈ വികൃതിയില്‍ കൗതുകം തോന്നുകയും അല്‍പ്പസമയം അത് കണ്ട് രസിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. തുടര്‍ന്ന് അടി അവസാനിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. ദേവപ്രീതിക്കായി എല്ലാ വര്‍ഷവും അടിയുത്സവം നടത്താന്‍ അരുളിച്ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു.

മറ്റൊരു ഐതീഹ്യം : മാവിലാക്കാവിലെ ദൈവത്താര്‍ തന്റെ ഉപക്ഷേത്രമായ കച്ചേരിക്കാവിലും അതിനടുത്തുള്ള ഇല്ലത്തും നിത്യസന്ദര്‍ശകനായിരുന്നു. ഇല്ലത്തുവെച്ച് രണ്ട് നമ്പ്യാര്‍ സഹോദരങ്ങളുമായി സൗഹൃദം പങ്കുവെയ്ക്കാറുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഒരുനാള്‍ ഇല്ലത്തെ നമ്പൂതിരിക്ക് കാഴ്ചയായി ഈഴവപ്രമാണി ഒരു അവില്‍പ്പൊതി കാഴ്ചവെച്ചു. അവില്‍പ്പൊതി നമ്പൂതിരി ആ നമ്പ്യാര്‍ സഹോദരങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് എറിഞ്ഞുകൊടുത്തു. അവില്‍പ്പൊതിക്കായി അവര്‍ ഇരുവരും ഉന്തും തള്ളും അടിയുമായി.

കണ്ടുനിന്ന ദൈവത്താര്‍ ഇരുവരെയും പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിച്ചു. അടി കാര്യമായതോടെ അത് അവസാനിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ ദൈവത്താര്‍ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. ഒടുക്കം ഒരാള്‍ അവില്‍പ്പൊതി കൈക്കലാക്കി. ഇരുവരുടെയും മനസില്‍ പകയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. മേടം നാലിന് നിലാഞ്ചിറ വയലില്‍ വെച്ച് ആദ്യ അടിയുടെ തുടര്‍ച്ച നടന്നു. ഈ ചടങ്ങില്‍ ദൈവത്താര്‍ ഉണ്ടാകാറില്ല.

The name is thought to be derived from the Malayalam word Mala (hill) and puram (region) derived or westernised into bar. This part of India was a part of the british East India Company controlled Madras State. when it was designated as Malabar District.
