On Friday at 6 p.m. the VARGA Gallery at 130 Tinker St. in Woodstock presents a solo exhibition of original paintings by self-taught artist Mikey Teutul, of the same family now famous for the hit series "American Chopper" on Discovery Channel. "Mikey Teutul: Unleashed" runs through Dec. 31 and is the last exhibit of 2011 at VARGA Gallery.

Teutul's medium is commercial-grade canned paint poured or splattered onto canvas and other surfaces. He has had no formal art training, and his work expresses a raw, unconstrained nature and belies his amiable TV persona. His foray into art blossomed out of aimlessness working at Orange County Choppers. "American Chopper" producer Adam Moyer suggested he paint portraits of the cast and crew. "So I started painting everybody. I didn't think anyone would want to buy any of my art, I just wanted to paint. I really enjoyed it, and I found it therapeutic. If I don't concentrate my addictive behavior on something positive, it will definitely go to the negative. I don't make any bones about that." Teutul's struggles with addiction are known to his fans. "It's nice to express that on canvas, rather than abuse myself, like I used to," he adds.

Teutul enjoys "being constructive, and not destructive" and is finding his footing in creative expression while "making a real go at something." His influences include the obvious, Jackson Pollack, but his approach is his own. As Teutul puts it, he is to Pollack what Britney Spears is to Meryl Streep. With some of his paintings taking only seconds, Teutul envisions a day he can "make more money than A-Rod, but I'll be happy if I can make enough to keep my doors open, afford some paint and canvas, and continue to do what I enjoy."

The exhibition includes a year-end group show of artists represented by VARGA Gallery, seasonal holiday gift-giving small works, and Occupy Wall Street art, propaganda, performance and paraphernalia.

14 year old - Dakota, traveled all the way from Kansas to meet Paul Jr. and the crew from The Discovery Channel’s American Chopper! Dakota never misses an episode of the show, and uses Paul Jr.’s designs as inspiration to build his own creations in his workshop at home. When asked what his one true wish was, Dakota didn’t miss a beat and knew it was to meet Paul Jr.!

Dakota was nothing but smiles as the limo brought him right up to the Paul Jr. Designs’ Studio door, VIP all the way! He couldn’t believe when Joe from the show greeted him! Joe asked Dakota what his favorite bike was and he didn’t even have to think twice, “The Black Widow!”

Joe asked Dakota and his family to wait in the lobby for a few minutes while Paul Jr. got ready. To everyone’s surprise, Mikey walked right through the door and up to Dakota to shake his hand! Dakota’s mouth instantly dropped wide open and then turned into a smile! The two chatted for a while about Mikey’s art gallery, since Dakota loves to draw. Finally Joe came back into the lobby and announced that Dakota and his family were going to get mic’d-up because they were going to be filmed for the show! Dakota’s mouth instantly dropped wide open again, he was so excited!

Showtime! Dakota walked with Mikey into the Studio right to Paul Jr.! His wish was coming true right on camera! Dakota, Dad, and Grandma walked into the Studio and were greeted by Paulie, Vinnie, Cody, and the rest of the crew. The crew took the family down a row of covered bikes, unveiling them one by one and letting Dakota sit on them! Finally, there was only one covered bike left. Paul Jr. unveiled it, and it was The Black Widow, Dakota’s favorite! He was so excited and made sure he got to sit on it for a long time. Paulie and the crew showered Dakota with posters, t-shirts, hats; some that aren’t even available to the public yet! Paulie even gave Dakota a signed hat for everyone in his class!

After touring more of the Studio, it was time for Paulie to get back to work on new bikes. Dakota had such a great time on his wish to meet Paul Jr. and was excited to tell everyone at home about his experience. The crew was so great and generous! However, Mikey still had a surprise. He invited the whole family to go see his gallery!

An American Chopper Battle Royale is in the works. The Discovery Channel has announced custom bike builder Jesse James, founder of West Coast Choppers, is pitting his skills against the celebrated Teutul clan of American Chopper fame. Both Paul Teutul Sr. and Paul Jr. are creating custom motorcycles in a “Biker Build-Off” against James. The contest will be broadcast as a two-night special on American Chopperwith the first episode introducing the three motorcycles to the viewing public. After the show, people will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite. The results will be broadcast live the following night from the Las Vegas strip, the first live event in the show’s history. The show is set to air on Dec. 5-6 at 9 p.m. (ET/PT) on the Discovery Channel.

James owes his boom in popularity in part to the Discovery Channel. In 2000, he was the star of Discovery’s documentary, Motorcycle Mania.Success of the show compelled the Discovery Channel to offer James a lead role in Monster Garage, which aired 80 episodes over five seasons. James and the Discovery Channel parted ways in 2006, and his life since then has been well publicized. It included another TV stint with the showJesse James is a Dead Man on Spike TV and was followed by his failed marriage to Sandra Bullock and ultimately the closing of his shop, West Coast Choppers. James has since relocated to Austin, Texas, where he’s part owner of Austin Speed Shop. The upcoming build-off on American Chopper marks his return to the spotlight as a custom bike builder.

The Teutuls, on the other hand, have had their own share of drama. The conflict between Junior and Senior has been the focus of American Chopper and culminated in a house divided. Paul Jr. has since made a name for himself with his own company, Paul Jr. Designs, while Senior has been busy at the helm of Orange County Choppers. Each shop has a different approach to custom bike building, so it will be interesting to see what the trio creates. Allowing fans to vote for their favorite is a refreshing twist for the show. Given the volatile personalities involved, it should make for interesting viewing, so be sure to tune in to the Discovery Channel Dec. 5th and 6th to vote for your favorite custom motorcycle.

9/11 Memorial Chair and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg joined 9/11 Memorial President Joe Daniels and Paul Teutul Jr. of Discovery Channel's "American Chopper" to unveil a custom-built motorcycle commissioned by 9/11 Memorial board member Daniel R. Tishman.

The bike was built to commemorate the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site and was unveiled at the 9/11 Memorial Preview Site, 20 Vesey St. In addition to the bike unveiled today, Paul Jr. Designs will build another bike inspired by the World Trade Center bike to support the Memorial through a raffle.

The donated bike raffle begins today and runs through Jan. 20. Raffle tickets are available online at 911memorial.org. The tickets are also available at the 9/11 Memorial Preview Site and the 9/11 Memorial Visitor Center at 90 West St. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

DECATUR - Television star Paul Teutul Jr. helped to create an electric atmosphere at the 2011 Farm Progress Show, even before the gates opened for the first time Tuesday.

Teutul, known as Paul Jr. from the Discovery Channel television show "American Chopper," drove the custom-built motorcycle he designed for the DeKalb seed brand through the crowd that lined up at the main gate to get into Progress City USA. The bike was designed to be a symbol of agricultural innovation as DeKalb marks 100 years in business.

"We really wanted to appeal to farmers," Paul Jr. told the crowd. He rode the bike wearing a backward black hat, black DeKalb T-shirt and blue jeans and noted the seat on the chopper is more comfortable than it looks.

"We knew it was farmers that have kept DeKalb in business all these years," Paul Jr. said, giving a thumbs-up to the crowd before riding the chopper back into Progress City.

Paul Jr. said he saw a lot of potential clients at the Farm Progress Show. He was accompanied by his wife, Rachel, and brother, Mikey Teutul, who garnered a lot of attention from the crowd.

After the opening ceremony, the brown and green chopper was on display throughout the day in the center of the DeKalb exhibit. DeKalb is the national corn brand of St. Louis-based Monsanto Co.

"I think he's really hit it out of the park," said Jason Hoag, DeKalb marketing manager.

Monsanto Chief Technology Officer Rob Fraley was amazed by how the project turned out. Company representatives saw the chopper for the first time as Paul Jr. drove it out of the gate amid a heavy security presence with Macon County sheriff's deputies and Illinois State Police handling crowd control.

"A lot of science and innovation go into it," Fraley said. "It's just what we were looking for because it symbolizes technology. It's the same thing that happens in a bag of seeds."

When it comes to benefiting from the hype surrounding the unveiling, it pays to be in the right place at the right time.

For the past few years, Monosem Inc. has used the spot next to the DeKalb to promote its planters to farmers as they emerge from the neighboring tent full of new seed knowledge.

On Tuesday, the company had the added benefit of having Paul Jr. film a possible segment of the upcoming show with some of the Monosem equipment in the background.

"I didn't expect them to be right here," Chad Compton said of the Paul Jr. Designs crew. Compton, of Edwardsville, Kan., is a territory sales manager for Monosem.

Visitors to the Farm Progress Show could catch a flavor of the rivalry between Paul Jr. and his father, Orange County Choppers founder Paul Teutul Sr.

Paul Sr. designed two choppers for another seed company, Beck's Hybrids, that he unveiled at the end of July. The choppers have been on tour since then, including at the company's new building during the Farm Progress Show.

The choppers are part of efforts to raise money for charity. Beck's is selling raffle tickets to buy one of its bikes to raise money for We Care for Orphans. The DeKalb chopper will be sold as part of online auction, which will begin in January, to benefit the American Red Cross disaster relief effort.

The yearlong DeKalb chopper tour will conclude at the 2012 Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa.

The Paul Jr. chopper unveiling started what turned into an ideal first day of the show. With temperatures expected to rise well into the 90s the next two days, those at the show enjoyed a comfortable opening day.

"Things have gone smoothly," said Jeff Lapin, president of Farm Progress Co. "It was pretty exciting to see him come in. He captured the flavor of what DeKalb wanted to do."

Throughout the day, visitors were busy showing off new products and technology. Field demonstrations went off as planned in dry fields north of the site.

A large crowd gathered as Paul Jr. provided the highlight of the opening ceremony, but a steady stream of visitors kept Progress City packed throughout the day.

Decatur singer CeCe Frey sang the national anthem during the opening ceremony.

"We're at the center for agriculture innovation for the next three days," said Willie Vogt, Farm Progress editorial director and emcee for the opening ceremony.

The fourth Farm Progress Show in Decatur continues from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, with the final day 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday. The Rodney Atkins country music concert starts at 5 p.m. today east of Richland Community College.

American Chopper is back with settlement & foreclosure...!

After months of waiting, arguing and bidding, after big disputes regarding who had the better bike and how would a war between father and son work out, American Chopper is back and with it confirmation that Pauls Senior and Junior have reached a settlement after two years of legal wrangling.

This is good news in the sense that it’s not comfortable watching a dynamic father and a talented son wrangle and wrestle. In basic terms Paul Jr. left his father’s bike building company, Orange County Choppers, and then was told he had to sell his 20 percent interest in the company back to his father, an interest Paul Sr. valued at zero.

What’s It Worth?

It’s hard to see how a big stake in a successful venture could not have a significant price tag, but what is such an interest really worth? A minority interest in a small business is typically difficult to value because it does not control the company and, of all things, the $12.5 million OCC headquarters has faced foreclosure, not a sign of great inherent value.

A court, however, did not buy such arguments so the father was effectively forced to buy out the son in a private settlement. How much was paid is unstated on the show, but in the settlement Paul Jr. got a payment of some sort plus the symbolic Black Widow bike, the first bike built on the series.

As to the Cadillac build-off which began with the last show of the 2010 season, there’s no doubt that Paul Jr. won — and by a landslide.

Dollars: The high bid for the bike from Paul Jr. Designs was $113 while the OCC bike drew a best bid of $51,000.
Members: 146,914 people joined the Paul Jr. team while 10,412 signed on with Paul Sr.
Photo views: 5,578,177 for Paul Jr. versus 3,171,980 for Paul Sr. Both numbers, it should be said, are huge.

The money raised by the sale of the Cadillac bikes goes to benefit the fight against Duchenne’s disease, a form of muscular dystrophy. As well, you can bet that a ton of additional donations came in.

So what’s next?

Future episodes can surely feature new bikes from both companies. There will be continued scrapping between father and son and it would not be surprising if some of the OCC builders — say Rick and Christian — drifted over to Paul Jr. Designs.

Foreclosure

There’s also the matter of the foreclosure, which ScreenRant reports has already taken place. Where will OCC re-locate and how will they get a mortgage? Could they move in with Paul Jr? And, of course, what does the mortgage lender do with a building specifically designed to house a motorcycle builder?
