Hey Divas!

Yesterday, my boyfriend brought to my attention that this year is already a quarter over. Really? Where did the time go? I had so many plans for this year and have barely been able to execute them. But in my defense, I have been caring for a baby that is allergic to just about everything. This has made him extremely cranky. Constant trips to the doctor and a baby that wants to be held ALL THE TIME has left me with very little time to get anything done.

I think the doctor and I have finally found a solution. So now Baby Bear has been calm enough for me to attempt to do some of the stuff I had planned. I have been able to crochet quite a bit but I just have not had the opportunity to post anything. I wanted to release some projects for Easter but that clearly didn't happen. My Etsy Shop has not been touched in forever. Oh well. I guess I still have time to get things done. In the meantime, while I collect myself, here's what I have been working on this year.

Monster Applique Onesie

Materials:

Artiste #8 Crochet Cotton in black, bright lime, and white

Size F hook

Tapestry needle

Fabric glue OR needle and thread

Eyes (make 2)

Start with magic ring
Rnd 1: ch 1, dc 12 in the ring, tighten ring, slst to 1st dc (12 dc)

Rnd 2: ch 1, dc 2 in each dc around, slst to 1st dc (24 dc)

Rnd 3: ch 1 hdc 1 in each dc around, slst to 1st hdc, fasten off, weave in ends (24 hdc)

Teeth (make 2)

ch 5
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each remaining chs, ch 1, turn (4 sc)

Row 2: sc2tog (twice), ch 1, turn (2 sc)

Row 3: sc 1 in both sts, ch 1, turn (2 sc)

Row 4: sc2tog, ch 1, fasten off, weave in ends (1 sc)

Mouth:

With black, ch 6, then slst 4 across top of tooth. Ch 4, then slst 4 across 2nd tooth, ch 6. Tie a knot at the end of the ch then cut off excess string on both sides.

Now you can attach the appliques to the onesie by either using fabric glue or needle and thread in matching color. I chose to use fabric glue. I you are going to go this route please take note that a little goes a long way. I also put a piece of cardboard in between the onesie to keep the glue from seeping through to the other side. Let dry according to the glue's instructions.

Kids Helping the Homeless

Over the last couple of years I've been finding it harder and harder to get in the Holiday spirit. It has really gotten to the point where I literally hate the holidays. I just feel like it's lost it's true meaning. Now it's all about the holiday sales and deals when it should be about family and giving.

So to try to give myself some holiday cheer, I've come up with a campaign to get everyone involved including my kids. Yeah, yeah. I know you're probably thinking "so what?" right? Well, it's kind of a big deal to me. A lot of you don't know that I left my now ex-husband a while ago. It's been a really tough transition for especially with me having five kids. The very beginning was extremely hard.

With trying to make ends meet and being the only provider of the household, I rarely got to spend time with my kids. I mainly worked the night shift so the only time I would ever see my kids was when I got them ready for school. Plus my schedule was always different every week. And it sucked!

I hated not being able to help them with homework or even just hear them talk about their day. My mom babysat while I was working so that was a huge help. But, she only did the bare minimum. Christina, my oldest, started slacking off in school and her grades were slipping terribly. The house was constantly a mess. And fast food became a regular meal. I just didn't have time for anything. Something had to give and fast!

This is Kaliya. She's my very emotional 4-year-old.

One of my co-workers told me about a company that would allow me to work from home. I didn't give it much thought at first because in my mind I though it must be some type of scam. But a few months later, after I found out that my now boyfriend and I were expecting a baby, I decided to do some research. It took a few months to get everything set up, but I did it.

I have since quit my job and I work full time at home. I make my own hours so that leaves me with an open schedule to actually be "Mommy". Everything is falling into place. Christina is doing a lot better in school. I'm able to put the girls in extra curricular activities. The house is, well, cleaner lol. Seriously, there's no way to keep a completely clean house with five kids.

This is my baby Samia. Can't you just tell from the picture that she's just so full of personality?

The best part about it for me is that everything is more organized. I don't mean the house. I mean our lives in general. I can tell that my kids are happier now that I'm home. The funny part about it, I never once imagined myself as being a stay-at-home mom. I always thought I would get so bored. But here I am. And I wouldn't change it for the world.

And here's the one we're waiting on. My baby boy Adonis!

Natural Hair Cronicles: DIY Coconut Milk Conditioner

Lately, I've been having issues with my hair retaining moisture. I guess it's probably this ridiculously cold weather in Georgia. Due to lack of moisture, I've also been experiencing a lot of shedding and breakage. So I started experimenting with a few products and found something that really works. Now before I actually list the recipe, please note that I am not a professional. I'm just a girl trying to figure out what works for my hair. One thing that I've learned throughout my natural hair journey is that all natural hair is not created equally. What may work for some may not work for you. It's all trial and error. If it works for you, GREAT! If not, just keep trying. I promise you'll figure it our sooner or later.

Coconut Milk Deep Conditioner

Ingredients
2 tablespoons Coconut Milk
2 tablespoons Olive Oil
1 tablespoon Shea Butter
1 tablespoon Raw Honey
1/4 cup of conditioner of you choice

Step 1: Heat the shea butter and raw honey together in the microwave for 30 seconds or until it has melted.

Step 2: Add the rest of the ingredients and stir until the mixture is completely smooth.

Step 3: Apply to hair and finger comb from root to end. After applying, I like to twist my hair in sections to avoid tangling. This is completely optional.

Step 4: Let hair set under a plastic cap or bag for 1-2 hours.

Step 5: Comb through with wide tooth comb.

Step 6: Rinse.

Crochet Oval Bow

Materials

I Love This Cotton OR Lily Sugar n' Cream
Size G hook
Tapestry needle

*Note* This pattern is worked in rounds.

Start with slip knot and ch 12

Rnd 1: dc in 4th ch from hk and in next 7 chs, dc 7 in last ch, pull the tail of the slip knot to tighten the hole.

Working along the opposite side of the chain dc in next 7 chs, dc 5 in last ch, slst to top of beginning ch-3 (28 dc).

Rnd 2: ch 1, dc in next 11 sts, dc 3 in next 3 sts, dc in next 11 chs, dc 3 in next 3 sts, slst to first dc (40 dc).

Rnd 3: *ch 3, slst in next st, repeat from * around, slst to slst from last round, fasten off, weave in ends. Close the second hole from round 1 by sewing together the loops on the back of the bow.

The bow probably will not lay flat but that's okay because once we apply the center it will lay perfectly.

Bow center

ch 4

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across, ch 1, turn.

Row 2-8: sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. Fasten off after row 8 leaving about a 6 inch tail.

Assembly

Pinch the center of the bow and wrap the bow center around it. Sew both of ends of the bow center together and weave in the ends.

All done!

Natural Hair Cronicles: My Natural Hair Journey

Many of you may know that I have been natural for quite some time now. This month is actually the 2 year mark. I don't really know what made me do it. I guess I can be a bit impulsive at times. A lot of people were really shocked, especially since I cut my hair all the way off! I tried the whole transitioning thing, but it just wasn't working for me. It shed a lot and it was really hard to maintain. So I just cut it all off. Here's the video of the before and after...

Yeah!...That was my dramatic change. I honestly really liked it that short. I received a lot of compliments on it. I never thought I could pull it off. After a while I started getting bored with it so I decided to grow it out. My last hair cut was April 2012. This is what it looked in September 2012...

I HATED this stage! I was tempted to cut it everyday! This stage was extremely awkward for me. I ended up putting weave in it and wearing wigs to keep me from cutting it off. But, I stuck with it. I was really hard figuring out what worked for my hair. But after some trail and error, I found a routine and some products that seemed to work out for me (I explain all of that in a later post).

This journey has been stressful, fun, and exciting. I love looking at my progress. I'm still trying to grow it out. I don't think I'll every cut it again. But who knows what the future holds?

Happy New Year Diva's!!! This year I've decided that I'm going to do things a little differently. Baby Crochet Leg Warmers

Lately, I've been experimenting with different baby crochet patterns since Samia is the perfect size for them. It's really exciting knowing that once the item is complete there's a little model just waiting to get her picture taken. I love how her chunky legs look in these adorable leg warmers. They're really simple and can be crocheted in an hour or less which is perfect because my short attention span doesn't allow me to work on lengthy crochet projects.

Assembly: Do not fasten off. Bring ends together and slst through both ends all the way across. Fasten off and weave in ends. Use a piece of yarn about 18 inches long and wrap around the middle leave enough string to weave in so that the middle is secure. Use the hot glue gun to glue the clip on the back.

I came up with this pattern for my co-worker. He was long dreads and wanted something that would fit snugly on his head and also conceal his hair.

Rnd 1: ch 1, dc 12 in the ring, slst to 1st st

I had a baby!

She's here...she's here!!! My 5th addition is here! Ms. Samia Anais has finally made her debut. Weighing a whopping 9 pounds and measuring at 20 inches long, she is definitely my biggest baby. My 2nd biggest baby was only 7 pounds 13 ounces. And omg, this pregnancy seemed like it lasted forever. But it's finally over and I now have my little bundle to love on :-).
