Two days back at 2 am Nato gunships opened fire on a remote outpost of the Pakistan army on the Pakistan Afghanistan border in Waziristan. The attacke which involved use of high intensity rockets led to the deaths of 24 Pakistan troops and injured a large number of them. This is the Pakistan version and has infuriated the Pakistan leadership, in particular the military top brass.

The incident has brought to light the utter incompetence of the Pakistan army as was evident earlier when they failed to detect the entry of US helicopters in the operation to kill Osama bin Laden. Hence these 24 deaths have infuriated the Pakistan military leadership and left them rubbing their hands

Possible Scenario

However independent observers are not buying the Pakistan version. As the situation is volatile and a humiliated Pakistan army has choked NATO supply lines as well asked the US to vacate the remote air base used for drone attacks, these observers are not coming out openly.

The facts are that the NATO helicopters were chasing insurgents who took refuge on the Pakistan side of the border. From there they opened fire on the NATO helicopters.. The leader of the NATO team asked permission from the NATO command to retialiate and this was duly given.

NATO helicopter gunships then opened fire. Hence as per reliable sources who do not wish to be quoted there is every possibility that the 24 Pakistan soldiers were killed in a cross fire. NATO retialiated, and 24 Pak soldiers died in the cross fire.

I also do not believe it at first. But after experiencing the real learning, success or failure, it can also we believe in the words on the "I Can Change the World". how?? Yes to LEARN! Because the learning you can change the world, a world that is closest to you, the world views, thoughts, and your heart.

Try, now you think there are 3 teenagers who again sat on the edge of the lake, they wore glasses with different colors, namely green, blue, and black. The green glasses say "well this beautiful green lake ...”. "Blind you, why you say the blue lake green!" said the blue glasses. The last one, the sunglasses, with a puzzled face said, "You are how, exactly like this cloudy weather beautiful, you guys suck ...!".

Okay, why do they differ? Why some say the lake blue, green, even black? Yaps! Because they were wearing different glasses. They can be noisy to defend his opinion, and nothing is right. All because they see from a different lens (look at different ways).

On the dawn of 25 May 2008, IBM unveiled their gentle giant- the ‘roadrunner’. Do not mistake it with the cute little cartoon character that your children enjoy watching on TV, the roadrunner is actually the worlds fastest computer at present, and it is capable of processing 1.7 petaflops. On May 25th, the computer had achieved 1.06 petaflops, making it the worlds fastest computer. This lean and hungry machine is not a child’s toy and it is priced at an eye-popping amount of $133 million.

Built by IBM at the Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico, this is truly a one of its kind supercomputer, primarily because of the fact that this machine is built mostly on commodity parts, available off the shelf at any hardware store. The worlds fastest computer boasts of some great design techniques, which have made it one of the marvels of modern engineering and computer architecture.

Built for the National nuclear security administration department, this computer has 12,960 IBM powerXcell 8i CPUs in conglomeration with 6,480 AMD opteron microprocessor systems. These systems are connected via a new technique of CPU-Processor connection, known as the infiniband, using blade server architecture. Running on Fedora and Red hat enterprise editions, the worlds fastest computer is as easy to work with as any other computing device. Designed to predict the vulnerability and the safety of America’s ageing nuclear weapons, the worlds fastest computer computes the reaction of nuclear components and ingredients as time progresses. The roadrunner is a massive machine, and occupies almost 550 square meters of space.

The main area where the worlds fasts computer differs from a lot of other super computers is the fact that it uses a combination of two architectures wherein each AMD 64 opteron processor is combined in a hybrid architecture with a ‘cell’, manufactured by IBM using its patented ‘power architecture’ technology.

The building process of the roadrunner was divided into three broad phases. The first phase was concerned with the development of a cluster, on a smaller scale, of the AMD 64- Cell combination and to check its feasibility on a larger scale. The second phase was primarily concerned with building a prototype using the clusters developed in the first phase. The third phase was dedicated to reach a peak performance, which was aimed to be measured in petaflops. Additional clusters, architectural enhancements and some additional powerXcell systems were arranged in order to breach the petaflops limit. Thus the worlds fastest computer was born on May 25th, 2008.

Containing two different kinds of processors, one being for calculations and the other for performing normal computer functions (such as bootstrapping, process scheduling and memory management), the worlds fastest computer is an architectural marvel. The two cores of computations in the worlds fastest computer are the AMD opteron and the IBM powerXcell. While the Opteron runs at 1.8 GHz, the PowerXcell runs at 3.2 GHz. The roadrunner utilizes a total of 122,400 cores, with roughly 6,000 coming from the Opteron and the rest coming from the PowerXcell.The computational unit of the roadrunner is the ‘triblade’, which consists of two dual core opterons with 16 GB of RAM and four powerXcells, containing their own additional 16 GB of RAM. The complete CU or the computational unit is the main unit of computation in the roadrunner and consists of 180 such triblades, with each of these triblades connected to a 288 port Voltaire infiband switch. The Panasas file system is implemented through twelve system servers. Each triblade, therefore, has to pass though one of these servers to access the Panasas files system.

The overall structure which emerges out as the complete roadrunner model consists of eighteen CUs, or connected units, which are connected through a second infiniband switch. The whole architecture is a mammoth structure and is testimony to the huge computing potential of the worlds fastest computer, setting it far apart from the rest of the competition.

Obama says deal reached to end U.S. debt impasse

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Sunday announced a last-minute deal to raise the U.S. borrowing limit and avoid a catastrophic default and he urged lawmakers to "do the right thing" and approve the agreement.

Laying out the endgame in the U.S. debt crisis just two days before a deadline to lift the borrowing limit, the White House and congressional leaders said the compromise would cut about $2.5 trillion (1.51 trillion pounds) from the deficit over the next 10 years.

With Republican and Democratic leaders in agreement, the Senate will likely vote on the proposed agreement on Monday, a senior congressional aide said. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner said he would bring it to a vote in that chamber as soon as possible.

"There are still some very important votes to be taken by members of Congress," Obama told reporters at the White House.

"But I want to announce that the leaders of both parties in both chambers have reached an agreement that will reduce the deficit and avoid default -- a default that would have had a devastating effect on our economy."

"I want to urge members of both parties to do the right thing and support this deal with your votes over the next few days," Obama said.

He said the first phase of the two-stage plan called for about $1 trillion in spending cuts over the next decade. The next $1.5 trillion in savings must be found by a special congressional committee by the end of December.

Financial markets showed signs of relief at a deal in the making to meet Tuesday's deadline, as U.S. stock futures jumped and the dollar rebounded on Sunday.

Democratic and Republican leaders planned to try to sell the deal to their rank-and-file on Monday. Leaders in the Senate announced agreement on the deal, but support remained especially uncertain in the House of Representatives.

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, a leading liberal considered crucial to delivering enough Democratic votes to offset Republican defections, suggested earlier that the terms under negotiation would be a tough sell in her party.

A deal would ease the immediate crisis but repercussions will be felt for years to come. Bitter brinkmanship has turned dysfunction seemingly into the norm in Washington, undercut America's stature as the world's capitalist superpower and set the stage for a deeply ideologically 2012 presidential race when President Barack Obama is seeking re-election.

Menu calorie counts 'beneficial'

Putting calorie information on menus encourages healthy eating - but only in a limited way, a review of the scheme in the US shows.

Researchers quizzed customers before and after a law was passed in New York in 2008 forcing restaurants to display the nutritional information.

The study by the NY Health Department showed one in six used the information - with most reducing their intake.

It comes as UK restaurants are introducing a similar scheme.

A total of 32 firms signed up to displaying calorie information in UK outlets, including fast food chains McDonald's and KFC, as part of the government's "responsibility deal" set out earlier this year.

The initiative saw a host of voluntary agreements established in the fields of alcohol, physical activity and health at work as well as food.

And the New York experience has suggested calorie information could have a benefit.

Researchers surveyed more than 7,000 people in 2007 and another 8,500 in 2009 at 168 locations covering 11 of the top food chains in the city, the British Medical Journal's website reported.

Some 15% reported using the labels and these customers purchased 106 fewer calories than customers who did not use or see them.

However, overall there was no significant change in average calorie consumption before and after as some people were consuming more calories in 2009.

This was partly explained by changing practices at some of the restaurants. For example, energy consumption increased by nearly a fifth at Subway where large portions were heavily promoted.

'Great example'
Researchers said it was important if the scheme was going to be more of a success that education campaigns be set up to improve awareness.

Dr Susan Jebb, a nutrition expert from the Medical Research Council, who has advised the government on its strategy, said she would expect calorie information to have more of an impact in the UK.

"We are much more used to looking at front-of-pack labelling in supermarkets so I would expect more people to use calorie information than the one in six in New York.

"But this study also illustrates the importance of how the restaurant or food chain acts. It is going to require a combination of factors to make a big difference."

A spokeswoman for the Department of Health said: "This is a great example of how calorie labelling can influence the choices people make and lead to a healthier diet."

Beatrice Brooke, of the British Heart Foundation, added: "One in six meals in the UK is eaten away from home so it's essential we know what's in the food we're buying in restaurants and cafes.

"The New York research shows us just how valuable calorie labelling in fast food restaurants can be.

Analysis

The research into how New Yorkers behaved after calorie information started being displayed on menus proves one thing - there is no silver bullet when it comes to changing behaviour.

Overall, consumption hardly changed after the law was introduced. That was partly because just one in six used the information at all.

Instead, the study suggests that the actions of industry can have much more influence.

One chain - Subway - saw calorie intake jump by nearly a fifth despite displaying calorie counts. The likely reason? It promoted large portions.

By contrast Au Bon Pain and KFC saw the biggest falls in energy consumption. But this was not wholly because customers were choosing to change their behaviour.

Instead, the two companies changed their menus and introduced healthier options. In fact, this may well prove to be the most significant consequence of putting calorie information on menus.

As it becomes clearer what is in the food we buy on the high street the food industry may feel compelled to offer healthier options.

First the good news. Jack Wilshere seems perfectly happy to play for Arsenal. Thomas Vermaelen looks ready to resume a promising career for the club after a season blanked out by injury. Gervinho might prove to be another classic Arsène Wenger bargain, an athletic and pacy ball player raring to step up a level, spirited over from France for a fee that doesn't make a certain manager with a well-documented devotion to cautious housekeeping choke as if he was asked to fix the Greek economy before breakfast.

Unfortunately at this point the scales lurch with a foreboding clang towards the less good news, the downright depressing news and the bewildering lack of news in critical areas that have made this the most pessimistic close season for Arsenal in decades.

For some years now summertime has merely represented a mix of dread about the best players being picked off, together with frustration that the handful of ambitious signings required to turn potential into the real deal never came. But few really expected, or even asked for, a radical overhaul.

Until now.

This summer was always going to feel different. For a start, patience wore down to breaking point as the 2010-11 campaign imploded in a way that was as miserable as it was predictable. Why are the lessons never learned? Arsenal were mauled like a pretty animal in a David Attenborough documentary that ends up as dinner to even the rangiest of scavengers. To make matters worse their fate was largely self-inflicted as they made traps for themselves to fall into (witness the fiasco against Birmingham City in the Carling Cup final).

So much goodwill in the bank from Wenger's past successes has been raided. Also, for the first time, it became obvious that some players had lost belief in the manager's philosophy. The atmosphere in the dressing room became increasingly bitter during a run of two wins from their last 12 league matches post-Carling Cup final. They knew, with even more clarity than any fan or pundit, that this youth project, for all its valiant idealism, has profound failings.

The other fundamental difference about this summer is the new scene at board level, with Stan Kroenke's takeover and Alisher Usmanov's increased shareholding suggesting that something somewhere would be adjusted in terms of the club's direction. But so far, the only thing to be altered is ticket prices, hiked with timing perfect in its clunkiness.

Even though there was never much chance of Wenger departing, this summer required major surgery in all departments to lift the mood. Experienced players are a necessity. Dead wood needs binning. A change in both the coaching staff and ideals can refresh an approach that is too feeble, too flawed, to last the distance (Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp's new roles elsewhere look like an opportunity missed, and while the competition are signing up the likes of Steve Clarke and Roberto Di Matteo as assistants, Pat Rice was talked out of retirement to prolong the status quo).

Wenger doesn't want to practice defending? Fine, so long as you bring someone in who will. The squad players not up to the task when the going gets tough? Fine, so bid au revoir to Manuel Almunia, Emmanuel Eboué, Sébastien Squillaci, Carlos Vela etc.

Some have departed, and others have flashing "for sale" signs attached, but Arsenal have not yet been as aggressive and decisive in the market as suggested by the promise from Wenger that they would be "very active". There is still a lot to do, with, astonishingly, the defence barely touched thus far. Where is the new robust centre-half, the experienced left-back to replace Gaël Clichy, the alternative to Alex Song in defensive midfield and the goalkeeper to prevent any more sightings of Almunia if injury strikes again?

The lack of arrivals is presumably linked to the demoralising sagas concerning the futures of Cesc Fábregas and Samir Nasri. But a "very active" window was needed regardless. Waiting for last-day bargains, as Arsenal tend to do, doesn't seem like a brilliant idea. Could be a bit late by then.

August brings meetings with Liverpool and Manchester United, plus a crucial Champions League play-off and a trip which is bound to remind them of all their worst foibles, to Newcastle United, where last term the good, the bad and the hideous of Arsenal morphed into one extraordinary game.

Arsenal remain in an elite group who have qualified for the Champions League for 14 successive seasons, and they have managed it with the "sustainable business model" that operates at a fraction of the outlay of their competitors. It is admirable. But with the big four now potentially a big six, it may not be workable for much longer.

Without a shaken-up squad, the only other source for change is at the training ground if the will and wherewithal is there. Andrey Arshavin has suggested they have been working on set pieces and a more intense pressing game during pre-season. Notably Arsenal's most impressive performances of last season, wins against Chelsea, Manchester United and Barcelona, showed how energetic pressing, rather than languid passing, reaps rewards. Equally notably, that approach didn't transmit to less interesting challenges. It remains to be seen whether Wenger can inspire enough of a change, whether a few alterations here and there is enough.

Bill Gates sells 5m shares in Microsoft

Software giant's founder has sold 90m shares in 12 months, but still has 500m; cash goes to help his foundation's charitable work

Bill Gates has sold another 5 million of his Microsoft shares, according to a regulatory filing.

Microsoft's multi-billionaire founder has been selling shares in recent months. He is the company's non-executive chairman, having stepped back from running the software firm in 2008 to concentrate on his charity work.

According to the filing, Gates sold 5m shares in Microsoft at an average $27.59 each on July 27. He has sold more than 90m Microsoft shares in the past 12 months.

Gates still has more than 500m shares in the company, but has decreased his shareholding over the last two years to fund his charitable endeavours and to diversify his portfolio.

This week the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation said it was making $42m available for eight universities to develop a toilet that does not need a sewer connection, water or electricity to operate. The ain is to improve people's health in parts of the world where there are few if any flushable toilets.

He is also backing research into improving education. "Every student needs a meaningful credential beyond high school," Gates said in a speech last week. "Higher education is crucial for jobs," he said, calling education an equaliser in society and the answer to getting urban America back to work and fighting poverty.

Forbes magazine estimates Gates's fortune at $56bn. Once the world's richest man, he is now second to Mexican telecoms mogul Carlos Slim after giving away a large chunk of his fortune to his charity.

Gates and long-time friend Warren Buffett have pledged to give away the majority of their fortunes to charity before their deaths, and have convinced a host of other billionaires, including Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, to follow suit.

NASA probe poised for launch to Jupiter

(Reuters) - A NASA satellite was hoisted aboard an unmanned Atlas 5 rocket at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Wednesday in preparation for launch next week on an unprecedented mission to the heart of Jupiter.

The robotic probe called Juno is scheduled to spend one year cycling inside Jupiter's deadly radiation belts, far closer than any previous orbiting spacecraft, to learn how much water the giant planet holds, what triggers its vast magnetic fields and whether a solid core lies beneath its dense, hot atmosphere.

"Jupiter holds a lot of key secrets about how we formed," said lead scientist Scott Bolton, with the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas.

Scientists believe Jupiter was the first planet to form after the birth of the sun, though exactly how that happened is unknown. One key piece of missing data is how much water is inside the giant planet, which circles the sun five times farther away than Earth.

Jupiter, like the sun, is comprised primarily of hydrogen and helium, with a sprinkling of other elements, like oxygen. Scientists believe the oxygen is bound with hydrogen to form water, which can be measured by microwave sounders, one of eight science instruments on Juno.

Jupiter's water content is directly tied to where -- and how -- the planet formed. Some evidence points to a planet that grew in the colder nether-regions of the solar system and then migrated inward. Other computer models show Jupiter formed at about its present location by accumulating ancient icy snowballs.

LARGER THAN SISTER PLANETS

However it grew, Jupiter ended up with a mass more than twice all its sister planets combined, giving it the gravitational muscle to hang on to nearly all of its original building materials.

"That's why it's very interesting to us if we want to go back in time and understand where we came from and how the planets were made" -- which Juno can help NASA do, Bolton said.

Juno's journey to Jupiter will take five years. Upon arrival in July 2016, Juno will thread itself into a narrow region between the planet and the inner edge of its radiation belt. The solar-powered probe will then spend a year orbiting over Jupiter's poles, coming as close as 3,100 miles above its cloud tops.

Only an atmospheric probe released by Galileo, NASA's last Jupiter spacecraft, has come closer, though that spacecraft was able to relay data for only 58 minutes before succumbing to the planet's crushing pressure and intense heat.

Juno's electronic heart is protected in a vault of titanium, but it too will fall to the harsh Jovian radiation environment after about a year. Juno's last move will be to dive into the planet's atmosphere to avoid any chance of contaminating Jupiter's potentially life-bearing moons.

Juno's launch is scheduled for August 5. The spacecraft was built by Lockheed Martin Astronautics of Denver, Colorado. The mission, the second in NASA's lower-cost, quick-turnaround New Frontiers planetary expeditions, will cost $1.1 billion.

David Gill, the Manchester United chief executive, has acknowledged he will always be unpopular with some supporters – the "anti-people", as he describes them – but he has spoken of his belief that the Glazer family have now won over the majority of the club's fans.

Gill, describing the Glazers as "genuinely long-term owners", reiterated the point by revealing that he and the American owners already have a strategy in place for when Sir Alex Ferguson retires. He said: "What we're trying to do is make sure we get the quality of team and the correct age profile so the new manager coming in, whoever that might be, has the nucleus of a world-class team."

Gill expects the Glazers to still be in control when Ferguson ends his long association with the club, but he was candid enough to accept that his comments would go down badly among the fans who were involved in the green-and-gold protest movement.

"We are never going to win [over] those people," he said. "If we won four European Cups in a row, there will be certain people who won't like the owners and what they stand for. The anti-people were here before the Glazers. But we are running the club for the vast majority of millions of fans around the world who believe the club is moving in the right direction.

"The minority – Must [Manchester United Supporters' Trust] etc – will always be against it, but the vast majority can't be dissatisfied with the seasons we've had [under the Glazers]."

The campaign against the Glazers has become less visible, in Gill's words, "once the Red Knights went away," referring to the consortium of businessmen who embarked on a failed bid to buy the club. "The green-and-gold campaign has not disappeared completely, but it has died down dramatically during the past season and we move on," he said.

Gill, speaking on the club's pre-season tour of the United States, dismissed the allegation that the Glazers, with an average net spend of £2.5m in their first six seasons, had not backed Ferguson sufficiently in the transfer market, citing the arrival of Ashley Young, David de Gea and Phil Jones for a combined £50m this summer. "One thing the owners have never shied away from is supporting Alex in terms of investment."

Similarly, he rejected the argument that the Florida-based businessmen had unfairly hiked ticket prices. "They are sensible prices to watch top-class entertainment and players worth millions on view. Other clubs have clearly raised their prices more than us," he said.

Gill has been singled out for particular criticism because of the way he fought against the Glazer takeover in 2005, once infamously saying that "debt was the road to ruin", before siding with the new owners and turning against the supporters' groups he had previously backed. "You say I did a volte-face, but we are going back many years now," he said. "Directors and chief executives aren't often liked, but I am trying to look after the employers and the fans, and there will always be an element among the fans who don't like you."

At times the anger has manifested itself in something more sinister, with graffiti appearing on his house and several incidents that have led to increased security. "It has calmed down now. It would be naive to say you don't want it to happen, not necessarily for yourself but because of your young children, but you just move on. I have never sought a profile; I just try to do my best for the club."

His son, Oliver, was booed when he was named as a substitute for one match, and has recently turned down the offer of a contract with the club to go to university. Gill, however, says it is unrelated. "He did take some stick, but he is quite a strong character. I don't think he ever thought like that."

Going into a season during which Ferguson will turn 70 and mark his 25th anniversary at the club, Gill talked about himself and the Glazers planning ahead to when the most successful manager in the business retires. "There won't be meltdown. It will clearly be a sea change for the club and we have to be ready."

He will be in charge of appointing the successor, although Ferguson will also be heavily involved. "I will co-ordinate the process, but, clearly, I will take great store in what he [Ferguson] says and what other key people at the club say. The owners will clearly have a view. All these things will come together. It would be a collective body, not a big body, but we would get all the input to make sure we make the appropriate choice."

There was no one in mind yet, he added, and he was unclear when Ferguson would stand down. "We never discuss it, put it that way. He delegates well and football keeps him young."

Animal experiments increase 1%

More than 3.7m scientific procedures were carried out using animals in 2010, an increase of around 100,000 on the previous year, according to data released by the Home Office. The rise is largely due to the production of more genetically modified mice and greater use of fish in basic biological and medical research.

Excluding the 1.6m procedures involving the breeding of GM animals – mostly mice – the 2010 total was up by 1% from 2009. The number of procedures is not equivalent to the number of animals used – one animal might undergo several procedures, and the act of breeding a genetically modified animal counts as a procedure in itself.

"If we exclude genetically manipulated breeding, there's an increase of less than 1% in the total numbers," said Judy McArthur Clark, chief inspector at the Animals Scientific Procedures Inspectorate of the Home Office. "That's largely due to the increase in the use of fish. Fish numbers went up by 23%, about 93,000 animals. That's more than the 1% increase, which means there's an accompanying decrease in other species."

Professor Dominic Wells, of the neuromuscular disease group at the Royal Veterinary College, said one of the reasons that scientists are breeding more GM mice is because they have refined their procedures. "Instead of creating animals that are adversely affected by the genetic modifications, we will very often keep two lines of mice, neither of which show an adverse phenotype until they are crossed. You can therefore generate precisely the number that you need in order to conduct that experiment. By breeding two lines we increase the number of animals used but we decrease the overall severity of what we're doing."

Primates, dog, cats and horses get special protection under the law and the total number of procedures on these groups was 19,773, around 0.5% of the total. Among the non-human primates, there was a 10% increase in procedures since 2009, though the number of actual animals used has dropped, according to McArthur Clark.

"The main change in the number of procedures is accounted for by new-world primates, such as marmosets, and the main reason for the increase is that it's a very fluctuating figure. The baseline numbers are quite small – one extra experiment or study in the year can actually have quite an impact on the numbers. Mainly these animals are used for collections of blood and tissue that are then used in pharmaceutical R&D. The number of old-world primates, macaques, the numbers have come down there, minus 2% on the numbers for 2009."

Procedures using dogs dropped by 2% – most of these were purpose-bred beagles mostly used in pharma development and safety evaluation - while the procedures on cats dropped by 32%.

There was also a fall of 11% in the number of animals used in toxicological tests, as a greater proportion of tests can now be used to satisfy more than one regulatory requirement.

Professor Roger Morris, head of the school of biomedical sciences at Kings College London, said 90% of his work was done with individual molecules and cells in culture. "But real diseases are diseases of the whole body, and can only be studied in the whole body. To take the example of Parkinson's – a disease that is very common and devastating. Part of this disease is a dopamine deficiency in the neurons, but the underlying cause is a complex set of interactive problems, that probably involves an inflammatory or autoimmune component. Thus we need to understand the interaction between two very complex bodily systems – the brain, and the immune system, to understand the defects causing this multi–tissue, multi–step disease. We can't study that in tissue culture of individual cells."

Barney Reed, senior scientist at the RSPCA, described the rise in procedures as "astonishing", pointing out that they equated to a 37% increase in animal use over the past decade. He also raised concerns over the implementation of a new EU directive on animal research into UK law that would legally allow the UK to drop its standards in many areas of inspection and practice in the use of animals. "A watered-down law could mean laboratory animals in the UK being allowed to suffer 'long-lasting, unalleviated, severe pain, suffering or distress', it could allow some animals such as dogs to be kept in even smaller housing, and some UK laboratories may not be visited by Home Office officials for years at a time – this is simply unacceptable," he said.

Martin Walsh, head of the Home Office's animals scientific procedure division, said he welcomed the EU directive because it would raise standards across the continent to the UK level. "We're ahead of the game in lots of areas. It's not going to reduce the protection of animals in the UK."

He added that the Home Office was also looking at ways to meet a commitment in the government's coalition agreement, which pledged to reduce the use of animals in scientific research and end the testing of household products on animals. Officials hope to publish a consultation on their ideas before the summer recess of parliament, said Walsh.
