As a little girl, I often exited the library doors with a cradled stack of 15-20 books teetering. I LOVED books! Still do. But back then, I didn’t know about Christian fiction.

What are some of the Best Christian Fiction Books to Read?

You’re here, so maybe you love clean reads with a hint or deep dollop of inspirational faith, too? Although my list of beloved stories runs LONG, I picked out a few that left a memorable mark. (There’ll likely be another list, because it’s impossible to include all of them here.) They jockey for top spot on my best Christian fiction list.

What Is a Good Christian Book Series to Read

If you’re in it for the long haul, try Karen Kingsbury’s Baxter series. I’ve lost count how many books were spawned from this family, but it’s many. There’s even a television show now, too. Fame, listed below is my favorite, but nearly all could fit the label.

As a side note, all of the above books run in a series as well. I highly recommend them.

You’ll find Christian fiction as well as Christian non-fiction. As a writer of both, I like to cover all the bases. Find nearly all on Amazon and others at Christian and independent bookstores.

Of course, I’m partial to Christian prints, as they feed the soul. If it’s a novel, it’ll provide clean entertainment intertwined, often, with a spiritual message. Some non-believers who won’t pick up a non-fiction book open a fisted heart and hand to fiction.

Never discount the possibility of story. Jesus didn’t.

What Books to Give for Christmas

Any. All. YES!

Book lovers love books.

Make certain they’re age appropriate, and don’t forget ebooks and audio as well as hardback and soft cover. Knowing your recipient’s preferred genre helps as well.

The Bible

Of course, as Christians, the Bible, the all-time best-selling book, sits at the top of that list.

Content is king, and a book’s cover catches the eye. Keep that in mind.

Discouragement vs. Gratitude

It came on the heels of a season battling a downcast spirit. To fight against the “dis”es (discouragement, disillusionment, and disappointment), I intentionally scribbled 3 points of gratitude each day.

Honestly, I didn’t know what else to do.

But it worked. God used those simple scribbles and the thoughts behind them to shift my focus and lift my spirit. After pushing myself to offer intentional gratitude, the offering because easier, normal, even.

God was “in” the gratitude.

In fact, during an outing to view the fall leaves a few years ago, something wild happened. As I stared out the passenger window, an overwhelming need to offer thanks overcame me. The Holy Spirit rapid-fired His counsel as I gazed at trees, signs, and nearly anything along the roadside. It was as though life became a sudden, vivid array of colors.

And I couldn’t get enough of it.

I found myself giddy with gratitude toward God, and filled with awe, scriptures, and connections I’d never considered.

The rapid-fire lasted for a portion of the ride, and then it was gone. I’ve never experienced it since.

But the impact remains.

God calls us to a life of thanksgiving for a reason. It’s good for us spiritually, and as different reports attest, it’s good for the body, too. Even more so, it puts the focus on God.

But darkness will fight against it.

Why Can’t I Practice Gratitude?

At first, the negativity were small pin-pricks throughout the day. But then, they clustered together, punching out bigger holes in my thought life. The weight pressed harder with time, and I knew something had to change, or I wouldn’t be okay.

So I turned to God and intentional gratitude. I pushed, forced–whatever you want to call it–myself to wrestle with my thoughts until I found 3 things to be grateful for.

Daily.

Because I was battling darkness, and God calls us to a life of thanksgiving. (You’ll find that Bible verse listed below.)

Practicing gratitude was hard–at first. (Remember, it’s a battle.) But it got easier with time, becoming almost involuntary eventually. An intentional focus above and on the things He’s given–through gratefulness–was key in helping me win the battle.

What Is Gratitude?

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary (online) indicates that gratitude is an attitude or appreciation to a benefactor for benefits received. It links grace as well. Grace is unmerited favor–the undeserved gift of salvation from Jesus Christ.

Webster added thankfulness to the definition, too. The Bible is filled with verses on thanksgiving, and those will be listed a little later in this post. Some in modern day, like in this Guideposts piece, separate gratitude and thankfulness. The earlier being an overall appreciation for life, while thanksgiving, they determine, focuses on a specific instance.

It’s like gratitude is the overal arc of life and thanks arises for those individual situations.

Personally, I lump ’em together.

Ways to Practice Gratitude Daily

Practicing gratitude daily can take several forms.

• Some speak their gratitude to God.
• Others speak their thanks to people.
• Some spend quiet time thinking about the people, situations, and things they’re thankful for, offering silent thanks to God for these and His gift of life.
• Others grab a pen and journal and write out their gratitude lists, using what they see, notice, or find in a gratitude journal prompt.

Why You Need a Gratitude Journal

While battling the negative nellies, I grabbed a pad of paper and pen. Each day, I forced myself to list three things for which I was grateful

It wasn’t easy at first.

With time, however, it became quite natural and changed my outlook. There’s science to this. Go figure. I suspect our Creator knew it all along.

The Bible offers numerous verses about the importance of gratitude, thankfulness, and thanksgiving. (See verses below.) This podcast, somewhere in the last ten-ish minutes, shares physical benefits noted by science. Gratitude, according to medical experts (which I am not), impacts the brain, heart, and other parts of our bodies.

So, it’s a good thing gratitude rose like cream to the surface.

However, I got a little tired of listing out “Gratitude” and “1”, “2”, & “3” in my notebook each day, so I created my own journal–a Christian printable available in my Etsy shop.

(By the way, it includes a LONG list of gratitude prompts, which is kind of fun, and two approaches for noting gratitude.)

But then I decided I didn’t want to journey alone, so I invited others to join me for a gratitude group called A Grateful Year.

Bible Verses about Thanksgiving and Gratitude

Here are three scriptures centered on gratitude, thankfulness, and thanksgiving. Two focus on our attitude toward God. The other hones in on it being a way of life, noting this is God’s will for us.

(So, in case you’ve ever wondered what God’s will is, it’s listed below in one of these verses.)

5 Ways to Practice Gratitude

1. Write it down.
   Whether it’s in a regular notebook or a printable journal like the two in my shop, be intentional about finding gratitude each day.
   
2. Say it aloud.
   Take a walk. Look at the sky, and offer God thanks.
   
3. Share your gratitude with a friend or group of friends.

4. Focus on the senses–touch, taste, hearing, seeing, and smell.
   Find something to be thankful for concerning each of these daily.
   
5. Bible Thanks
   After daily Bible reading, pick out three things in that reading for which to thank God.

Christian podcasts are easily searched online. Search and find them in your phone’s podcast app as well.

Spotify is another podcast broadcaster, and don’t forget to check Rumble or YouTube. Many podcasters choose audio players to broadcast in conjunction with video sites.

Best Christian Podcasts for Women

Goodness, there are several. It depends on what you’re looking for. The Bible Recap from Tara-Leigh Cobble is an excellent one for Bible study. For testimonies, I always loved a podcast that’s no longer recording new episodes, By His Grace.

Don’t stop here, though. There are many more top-notch Christian podcasts. Keep reading for additional suggestions.

Top Christian Podcasts for Women

Currently ranking at #3 for top Christian podcast for women is one I highly recommend: Gospel Spice. Stephanie and I met at a podcasters conference in the month before the “C” virus shut down the world. This former atheists hailing from France and now living in the U.S. LOVES Jesus. And she goes deep in her study of him.

I’ve linked our conversation below, but make sure to search for the Joel Rosenberg episodes, too. He has two on prophecy that are fantastic.

What is the Best Book to Gift?

Ask a few questions to find their reading preference. Do they enjoy Christian fiction? If so, which genre? Historical fiction? Speculative? Contemporary or historical romance? Women’s or Contemporary Fiction? Mystery? Suspense? Or?

Knowing their genre preference is a good place to start with fiction. Nonfiction audiences might be easily satisfied with a gift book. Those fit across a broad range of audiences. There are Christian living, Bible studies, and other Christian nonfiction. Those tend to be more in-depth, but folks still love them.

Is Gifting a Book a Good Idea?

It depends on the person, but gifting a book is often a good idea. Consider a person’s circumstances and reading preferences when selecting the appropriate title.

Some folks prefer audiobooks over physical books. There are always ebooks for those on the go, who love special Kindle deals, or who prefer the e-option.

My Story / Your Story Matters

“Did I hear that the clerk over there had a stroke?” Lowering the box of tea into my bag, I nodded toward the middle-aged man who appeared far too young to wrestle with such a serious medical condition.

The dark-haired clerk looked and turned back to me, her expression softened. “Yes.”

I explained that I’d overheard him mention it to a customer one day and was glad he’d recovered so well.

“I feel for him because I had a mini-stroke in March.”

She stopped scanning my produce and turned a wide-eyed glance at me. “But you’re so young.”

Well, yes–in the big scheme of things. I’m in my 50’s and a mini-stroke wasn’t something I’d included for the decade’s agenda. Any agenda, for that matter.

But the unexpected happens.

Without a customer in line behind me, which was unusual for this store, I opened up about my story. “I’d been sick, and I’d sensed the Holy Spirit nudge me to take an aspirin.”

Multiple times, in fact. (Because I kept forgetting!)

For several days, I downed adult aspirins, one on most days, and doctors believe that’s what saved me from having a full-blown, brain-damaging stroke. The MRI showed no trace of stroke’s havoc.

Praise God.

I’m grateful for His wisdom and leading, for our Counselor who continues to counsel to this day.

I walked away from that grocery store conversation amazed that God had opened a door for me to showcase His love and power.

From the look on the clerk’s face and the cadence of our conversation, there’s a good chance she’ll remember that story–the one I hadn’t planned to share.

But God had.

(She also shared with me that her little sister had recently had a heart attack. Y’all, the clerk was in her early 20s at most. Maybe take a moment and pray for both sisters as well as the male stroke survivor?)

My story was simply a seed. God will bring the fruit.

You have stories to share and seeds to plant, too. Because God remains in the fruit-bearing business.

Why Does Telling Your Story Matter?

Your story matters.

Why?

Because it points to Jesus, taking others with it.

We’re planting seeds for the hope of heaven. The world needs it. The world needs Him.

The Lover of our souls.

Our Refuge in times of trouble.

Our Deliverer.

Our Redeemer.

Our Hope.

The One who knows our every intricacy because He is our Creator.

Why Story

Why story and which one of yours is He ready to use?

I didn’t expect to share with the clerk that day. And who knew I’d be the solo customer in line? (That rarely happens!)

In my twenties, I didn’t expect to be a Navy wife or to share stories that hit a milspouse’s heart deep through the prayers in 101 Prayers for Military Wives.

The journey is often unexpected. Sometimes, unwanted. Yet, praise to God rings through them all.

So go.

Share those stories, whether in conversation, a social media post, or as a novel. Because people remember stories. Even Jesus used them.

Go as He opens the door. Don’t be afraid, because someone needs to hear.

And everyone needs to know our hero, Jesus.

Mentoring in the Church

Some churches have intentional programs for mentoring.

Others organize small groups that often emulate or spawn mentoring between women.

And then other times, it’s simply a met need, a leading by the Holy Spirit for a one-on-one mentoring relationship. (This is best, in my opinion.)

God led a woman named Barbara to mentor me for five-ish years. She continually pointed me toward Jesus in her actions and our conversations.

God used that relationship to help change my life. And goodness, I hope I’ve “paid it forward.”

How Do You Biblically Mentor Someone?

Here are a few suggestions in your journey to biblically mentor.

• The Holy Spirit pours out His wisdom, so lean an ear toward and focus on Him. Let the Holy Spirit lead in relationships, including a biblical mentorship.
• Bathe that relationship in prayer.
• Reach out. Communicate. Listen to their needs and respond accordingly.
• Ask questions.
• Love well.

It doesn’t have to be stiff. Allow this organic relationship to grow for the duration God has in store.

As You Set Out to Mentor

Spiritual mentoring can last for a snippet in time or for years. When my mentoring journey with Barbara was coming to a close, the Holy Spirit prepared me. I knew. But I didn’t say anything, because it made me nervous to think of my faith walk without her in this way.

Not long after, however, Barbara shared what I already knew. God had spoken to her, too.

However long your spiritual mentoring journey is, may Christ be central. May He be high and lifted up. Enjoy the walk, friend.

My Love/Hate Relationship with Mothering

Mothering and I have a love/hate relationship.

I love the idea of being a good mom. I want to be one. But there’s a struggle and underlying uncertainty with each attempt. I simply don’t feel good enough.

And I hate it.

It’s a vicious cycle.

Try.

Fail.

Self scorn.

Mothering pity party for 1.

Attempt again.

And girl, don’t even place a June Cleaver-type in my tracks.

It’ll be cause for a self-worth train wreck of the awful kind.

She’s so good, and I’m so…not. {sigh}

Cue the shortfall.

And the cycle begins again.

Mothering in Real Life

Let me offer a few examples…

There was the day I poked my head in the side door of our little Ellie, our silver flash of a van, only to find crumbs sprinkled on her floorboard and seats. And nevermind the trash shoved into the cracks and seat pockets. Goodness!

I sighed in defeat. After all, don’t good mothers keep clean vans? Mine was a mess. I stamped myself “Not Good Enough!”

Then there was the day milk spilled all over the dinner table – for the 455th time.

It rushed directly to the crevice – of course! It couldn’t gather in a nice, little puddle on the tabletop and wait patiently for a clean-up, could it?

With white liquid streaming to the floor below, I bellowed a slow-motion “Noooooo” in my brain. I’m not certain what came out of my mouth. Six eyes stared at me as I cried, giving credence that women do cry over spilt milk.

And kids stare at their cryin’ mamas.

And then there were those days when winning a tennis match with Serena Williams seemed easier than bearing the internal banter called “mothering indecision”.

Is he really hurt or does he just want attention?

Should I make her tow the mark on this one, or offer a “get out of jail free”?

Should I let them go or should they stay home?

Oh, the indecision…

Its chatter might as well have been plastered on a sandwich board hooked over my shoulders, hanging for all to see: “Bad Mother – Will Never Get It Right.”

But something has changed. I’m not that same mama crying over spilt milk anymore.

After all, milk doesn’t call us by name – God does.

But now, this is what the Lord says—
he who created you, Jacob,
he who formed you, Israel:
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine IS 43:1 NIV

Oh, I still like a clean van. And when those tires shine ~oooo!

But food crumbles left by clean and grimy little hands alike don’t create our identity – our Creator does.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Eph. 2:10 NIV

And the incessant indecision? It proved to be works of perfection determining my worth. I was afraid of being wrong for fear of being “not good enough”. It left little room for Jesus and His beautiful grace.

A right or wrong decision doesn’t determine our worth – our Daddy above does.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. Eph. 2:8-9 NIV

It’s a Daddy who knows just what His little girl needs – and being faithful to love her through the changes. With each change, she gains God confidence – Godfidence. And her steps become more firm.

As my Father revealed lies buried deep in my heart, He healed me. He healed my thoughts. He healed my mothering way of life. It was a process – and still is.

I changed. My mothering changed. But it wasn’t a mothering issue after all. It wasn’t crumbs, indecision, or spilt milk. No, those were only evidence. It was a heart condition.

As the Lord worked on my heart, I gained confidence.

It overflowed into mothering. It was Godfidence.

So let’s stick with it – mothering emersed in trust of the Lord, okay? Let’s link our fingers with our Father, keeping eyes on His prize, trusting Him as we step. Let’s cling fiercely to Jesus.

Our God will show us the lies. He’ll also help us heal. And we’ll gain Godfidence for this race called life, mothering included.

After all, He can take any love/hate relationship with mothering and beautifully turn it into one of love/love. I’m living proof. To God be the glory.

Looking for a prayer for heroes? (All types, whether military members, dads, first responders, etc.)

As I watched the awful Trump assassination attempt videos (evil at the core), my thoughts landed on law enforcement and the split-second decisions they’re faced with. Likely because I’m a law enforcement officer (LEO) mama and the wife of a military veteran. (Many LEOs are former military members, too.)

My thoughts swung to the families who dearly love their LEOs, too, and how precarious that blue line is these days.

Thoughts also went to the injured and the unfortunate man who died–a loving father, believer, and retired first responder along with his seemingly close-knit family whose members witnessed this horrific death. (PTSD will be a very real thing for them, so please don’t forget them when praying.)

Let’s heed the call to buckle up in prayer. Let’s battle for righteousness on behalf of our heroes and their families.

Who are Heroes

Consider this prayer for all kinds of heroes: military, law enforcement and other first responders, leaders in the home and even those on our governmental front (although, I personally believe a good housecleaning might see more true heroes sprout up), pastors, teachers, and others.

The Bible is full of everyday folks fueled by godly courage, like David, Deborah, Paul, and, of course, Jesus.

We need heroes. And they–like us–need the #1 HERO: Jesus.

What Is A Powerful Prayer to Pray for Someone?

Scripture packs power–for life, but prayer, too. Jesus used Bible verses in his face-off with the devil, setting an example for us as found in Matthew 4.

Here’s a prayer for our heroes for those looking for a little help with the word. Fill in the blank with your hero’s name or a group such as firemen, military members, etc.

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for ________. Your work in them is good. Wonderful, in fact. We praise You. Surround this/these loved one(s) with your angels and protection. Guide them with wisdom in their work as well as in their daily lives. If unbelieving, draw them to belief and trust in Your deliverance, Your salvation, Your love and grace. Coat them in humility as they work with the public and coworkers, in their marriage and friendships, too. May they see other humans as Your handiwork, knowing You are the Potter and we are the clay. Prompt them with reminders from others, Your word, and in prayer–even through circumstances–that Your righteousness is the right path on which to travel. Heal their heart from past trauma, for only You know what settles there, Holy Spirit. Settle their thoughts with the peace that passes understanding, with the assurance of Your strength and power. May they submit every anxious thought to You, being reminded that with thanksgiving and this submission, that they find mindful peace there. Through their lives, words, and actions, may You be praised. We love You, Almighty One. In Jesus’ name, amen.
