Obama would rather lose a war in order to win a political campaign." He was referring to Obama's continuing call for the withdrawal of American forces from Iraq within 16 months of taking office, a plan that was conditionally endorsed last week by the Iraqi leader.

In an interview with ABC television that was broadcast Sunday, McCain appeared to soften that remark but did not withdraw it.

"Sen. Obama doesn't understand. He doesn't understand what's at stake here (in Iraq). And he chose to take a political path that would have helped him get the nomination of his pary. ... And if we'd done what Sen. Obama wanted done, it would have been chaos, genocide, increased Iranian influence, perhaps al-Qaida establishing a base again," the four-term Arizona senator told ABC.

McCain said he was not questioning Obama's patriotism, though his remarks produced a significant backlah.

On Sunday, fellow Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, a longtime McCain friend who accompanied Obama to Iraq, urged the Republican candidate to move away from such stridency.

"John's better than that," said Hagel, a frequent Iraq war critic.

"I think John is treading on some very thin gound here when he impugns motives," Hagel said in a CBS television interview.

Hagel, a Vietnam war veteran, said that "it's just not responsible to be saying things like that."

In an interview taped Saturday in London with NBC television, Obama held fast to having refused to back the addition of 30,00 American forces last year in Iraq, the so-called "surge" that has been credited in part with bringing down violence. Obama contended from the outset that the Iraq war was distracting from what he sees as the far greater danger from the Taliban and al-Qaida that are resurgent in Afghanistan and inside Paktan.

"My job as the next commander in chief is going to be to make a decision what is the right war to fight, and, and how do we fight it? And I think that we should have been focused on Afghanistan from the start. We should have finished that job. We have not, but we now have the opportunity, moving forard, to begin a phased redeployment (from Iraq) and to make sure that we're finishing the job in Afghanistan," Obama said in the Sunday broadcast.

In an Associated Press interview aboard Obama's plane as he returned from London, the Democratic candidate said he intended to shift his focus quickly toward the economy and other domestic issues in the coming days.

Depending on actions the current administration and Congress take, he told AP a new economic stimulus package may be his first legislative request from lawmakers if he takes office as the 44th president in January. He has called previously for additional tax rebates and other measures to help revive the economy, and intends to convene a meeting on the subject on Monday in Washington.

He told NBC that he would be meeting with economic advisers, including investor Warren Buffett; Eric Schmidt, chairman and CEO of Google; former Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker; Clinton administration treasury secretaries Robert Rubin and Larry Summers as well as Robert Reich, who served Bill Clinton as secretary of labor.

Both candidates were in agreement to a degree in blaming America's lack of planning for the country's current economic crisis.

"I will embark on an immediate ... effort to eliminate our dependence on foreign oil - nuclear power, offshore drilling, wind, tide, solar - and stop this drain of $700 billion a year from the American economy. This administration - for 30 years, Congress and the administrations have not done anything on this energy crisis," McCain said in the ABC interview.

Obama followed similar reasoning, while proposing different solutions.

"The fact of the matter is that we should have, over the last 20 years, been planning for this day," Obama told NBC.

McCain meawhile told ABC he supports a proposed ballot initiative in his home state that would prohibit preferential policies for minorities from state and local governments. A decade ago, he called a similar effort "divisive."

Over the years, McCain has consistently voiced his opposition to hiring quotas based on race. He has supported affirmative action in limited cases. For example, he voted to maintain a program that encourages the awarding of 10 percent of spending on highway construction to women and minorities.

McCain was asked specifically Sunday whether he supported an effort to get a referendum on the ballot in Arizona that would "do away with affirmative action."

"Yes, I do," said McCain in an interview broadcast Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

The Republican senator quickly added that he had not seen the details of the proposal. "But I've always opposed quotas."

Speaking to a conference of minority journalists on Sunday, Obama said McCain was embracing divisive tactics.

"I think in the past he had been opposed to these kinds of Ward Connerly referenda or initiatives as divisive. And I think he's right," Obama said, referring to a leading critic of affirmative action.

Affirmative actions programs by the federal and state governments are designed to insure American minorities have equal educational and economic opportunities.

Iraq Confirms: We Want U.S troops Out in Two Years

The Iraqi Government said today that it had a vision for all US combat troops to leave the country by the end of 2010 — another apparent endorsement of Barack Obama’s war strategy during his visit to Baghdad. Hart, a Washington-based pollster, said Obama led in polls because Americans saw the 46-year-old senator as likable and inspirational, and believed he could understand and relate to problems faced by the average person.

In recent polls Hart conducted for NBC News and The Wall Street Journal, the Democratic candidate led his Republican counterpart by a wide margin of 47 percent to 41 percent, while a Reuters/Zogby poll released Wednesday had Obama leading John McCain by 47 percent to 40 percent.

"Obama represents change and people perceive him as the candidate of hope. And by sharp contrast people are not ready to vote for McCain because they find him boring, uninspiring and a continuation of the Bush administration," Hart said.

He added Obama's inexperience, liberalism and lack of executive expertise could result in people not voting for him. In this case, McCain might be the preferred candidate because of his vast experience and humble and resilient personality.

Obama, contesting to be the first African-American U.S. president, clinched the Democratic Party's nomination last month after beating out New York Senator Hillary Clinton in an agonizingly protracted primary campaign.

He is now engaged in a five-month-long campaign against Arizona Senator McCain, a 71-year-old Vietnam veteran who was a former prisoner of war and staunch supporter of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, ahead of November's presidential election.

"The majority of people will put together character and what they offer in measuring candidates' quality. But at the end of the day, people count most on character. They will cast their votes for people they feel comfortable with," Hart said.

He said racial issues were no longer seen as major stumbling blocks for Obama, with 86 percent of those polled saying they were ready for an African-American president.

"I think the biggest challenges Obama faces now are making the right choice for vice president and making himself known to a wider public -- because there is a lot of misinformation about him," Hart said.

"Among the misinformation, 15 percent of people we surveyed still believe he is a Muslim."

Baskara T. Wardaya, a history professor at Sanata Dharma University in Yogyakarta, said most Americans related more to Obama's humble personality and would feel more secure if he were president.

"He gives voice to middle-class American citizens and can relate to their daily concerns. This is in contrast to his Republican rival, who sides more with corporate interests, perhaps even to the detriment of middle-class Americans," he told The Jakarta Post by telephone.

Rizal Sukma, deputy executive director for the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) said "with Obama elected as president, half of the (U.S.'s) problems are solved".

He said people would vote for a candidate who could engage others in discussion to solve issues, rather than impose military might on its adversaries.

"Obama is very much aware of the U.S.'s declining image worldwide, and campaigning about the importance of adopting a diplomatic rather than military approach," he said.

"People believe he can restore America's image as an agreeable superpower."

Do Not Execute Bali Bombers!!

The father of an Australian killed in the 2002 Bali nightclub bombings asked Indonesia not to execute three militants convicted in the blasts, saying Friday "no good, only harm" would come from their deaths.

"Nothing will return my son to me, to his mother, his family and his friends," Brian Deegan said in an open letter to Indonesian authorities. "But the execution of a selected few who were responsible for his death and the death and maiming of hundreds more will not cure the pain."

Deegans's son Joshua was one of the 202 people killed in the Oct. 12 blasts on the resort island. Most of the victims were foreign tourists. Authorities have convicted more than 30 Islamic militants in the blasts, three of whom are on death row.

On Thursday, an Indonesian court said it had rejected a final appeal by the trio, bringing their executions closer. The three can still appeal for clemency to the president, but have said they will not do so.

Deegan, a barrister and a magistrate in his native Australia, said he and Joshua were opposed to the death penalty in all cases. His letter was released with his permission by the Anti-Death Penalty Asia Network, a regional group that campaigns against state executions.

He said killing the three men - who have shown no remorse and maintain their acts were sanctioned under Islam as revenge for Muslim deaths in Afghanistan and elsewhere - risked turning them into martyrs.

He urged the death penalty to be commuted to life imprisonment.
"I see that no good will come from their execution. It was uncovered from the phone tapping at the Corruption Court in Jakarta, yesterday.

The connection with the phone occurred on June 10 at 9pm while both of them were arrested. “Tomorrow we will be consistent with the amount of money that you use, right?” said Artalyta on the phone tap.

Urip was arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in March 2008 at the house of Sjamsul Nursalim at Jalan Terusan Hang Lekir II, WG 9, Simprug, South Jakarta. He was caught when receiving Rp6 billion from Artalyta. A few hours later, Artalyta was also arrested.

They talked over the phone although Artalyta was detained at the Criminal and Investigation Agency at Indonesian police headquarters in Jakarta while Urip was held at Brigade Mobile headquarters in Depok.

During the trial yesterday, Artalyta insisted that she never called anyone from the prison. “It is a traumatic experience for me to talk on the phone,” she said.
She then changed her mind when the prosecutor mentioned about the phone tap. “No need to be played. I admit the call,” said Artalyta.

But the judge decided to play the phone tap when Artalyta called Urip by using a Singapore number.

However, Artalyta still claimed that the money is for Urip opening a workshop. She mentioned the land in Cikampek given by Urip as collateral on the loan.

Judge Andi Bachtiar questioned this statement. “There is no mention about a loan on 44 phone taps.” Artalyta could not explain this.

From the prison, Artalyta also contacted a man on June 5. She has had a long relationship with Sjamsul Nursalim, and created a situation for this man to be a witness for Urip.

China tells U.S "no arms for Taiwan". Grover Gebhart has spent nine months at a small post on a Sunni-Shiite fault line in western Baghdad. But the 21-year-old soldier on his first tour in Iraq feels he's missing the real war — in Afghanistan, where his brother is fighting the Taliban.

With violence in Iraq at its lowest level in four years and the war in Afghanistan at a peak, the soldiers serving at patrol station Maverick say Gebhart's view is increasingly common, especially among younger soldiers looking to prove themselves in battle.

"I've heard it a lot since I got here," said 2nd Lt. Karl Kuechenmeister, a 2007 West Point graduate who arrived in Iraq about a week ago.

Soldiers who have experienced combat stress note that it is usually young soldiers on their first tour who most want to get on the battlefield. They say it is hard to communicate the horrors of war to those who haven't actually experienced it.

"These kids are just being young," said Sgt. Christopher Janis, who is only 23 but is on his third tour in Iraq. "They say they want to get into battle until they do, and then they won't want it anymore."

That soldiers are looking elsewhere for a battle is a testament to how much Iraq has changed from a year ago, when violence was at its height. Now it's the lowest in four years, thanks to the U.S. troop surge, the turn by former Sunni insurgents against al-Qaida in Iraq, and Iraqi government crackdowns on Shiite militias.

At least 29 U.S. soldiers died in Iraq last month, and there were 19 deaths in May — the lowest monthly toll for American troops since the war began in March 2003. By comparison, in Afghanistan, 28 Americans died in June and 17 in May, but there are four times as many U.S. troops in Iraq.

American military deaths in Iraq are also down sharply this month, in a trend that could take center stage during Sen. Barack Obama's planned visit to Baghdad and the debate over whether America's main battle is shifting back to Afghanistan.

At least eight soldier deaths had been reported for July by the military as of Wednesday — four in combat, two not connected to fighting and the recovery of remains of two soldiers missing since last year.

The daily average of 0.50 deaths so far is significantly below any month in the war. The lowest for a full month was 0.61 deaths in May, and the next lowest was 0.71 in February 2004.

The relative calm is apparent in Baghdad's Ghazaliyah neighborhood, patrolled by troops stationed at Maverick from the 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment of the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division.

Instead of facing gunfire and roadside bombs, the soldiers' armored Humvees are chased by waving children as they weave through streets crowded with pedestrians out to shop or just to stroll.

Some of Maverick's troops saw combat a few months ago when they helped the Iraqi army take over the Ghazaliyah office of anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr in a battle complete with gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades.

But their days in Ghazaliyah have mostly been filled with routine patrols. The soldiers' job is to serve as a critical presence that helps keep violence down in the mixed Sunni and Shiite neighborhood.

"Ninety-five percent of the time it is perfectly quiet in Ghazaliyah now," said 1st Lt. Shane Smith, who leads one of the three platoons at Maverick.

Quiet can mean boredom, as Gebhart and a colleague turn in another four-hour shift in one of Maverick's guard towers, looking over a landscape of two-story concrete buildings and green fields dotted with a few cows and goats.

To while away the time, the young soldier from Omaha, Neb., talks of his brother, who is fighting the Taliban in the mountains outside Kandahar city in southern Afghanistan.

"He spends 20 days at a time camped out in the mountains, and the Taliban come engage them in serious firefights," said Gebhart. "At least it sounds exciting."

That excitement comes with a price, the officers here point out.

Militants in Afghanistan killed nine American soldiers Sunday, the worst attack on U.S. forces in the country in three years. More U.S. and NATO troops have been killed in Afghanistan than in Iraq over each of the last two months.

The soldiers at Maverick have faced tragedy during their tour, losing one comrade to a sniper in April and another to a roadside bomb in June.

But those deaths have only heightened the frustration of younger soldiers who joined the Army with the classic notion of fighting an enemy.

"These kids who joined the Army since the Iraq war started in 2003 are more fearless than when I joined during the Cold War," said 1st Sgt. John Greis, the senior enlisted soldier at Maverick. "They knew they were going to war."

But with violence down in Iraq, they have little opportunity to prove themselves as warriors to fellow soldiers, some of whom are only a few years older but have already battled al-Qaida in places like Fallujah and Mosul on previous Iraq tours.

Saying they want to go where the combat is — in Afghanistan — is one way for young soldiers to prove their toughness, colleagues say.

Some may get their wish. There is broad consensus in Washington that some U.S. forces can now leave Iraq and that more are needed in Afghanistan.

Both of the main presidential candidates — Obama and Republican Sen. John McCain — called this week for more troops to be sent to Afghanistan to battle the Taliban and al-Qaida fighters operating along the border with Pakistan.

After recently returning from Afghanistan, Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said more troops are needed for the Afghan conflict. On Wednesday, he said he expected to be able to recommend American troop reductions in Iraq later this year if security continues to improve.

Not all soldiers in Iraq are pining for service in Afghanistan.

Greis, a 21-year veteran, isn't eager to seek out battle. "There is nothing cool about seeing your buddy on the ground during his last dying seconds of life," he said.

He rolled up his sleeve and pointed to a Latin phrase tattooed on his right shoulder: "Dulce Bellum Inexpertis" — "War is sweet for the inexperienced."

___

Monika Mathur of the AP News Research Center in New York contributed to this report.

Katie Holmes Cruises to 'Eli Stone'

Yep, you read that headline correctly. In arguably the biggest piece of stunt casting since How I Met Your Mother lassoed Britney Spears, sources confirm to me exclusively that Katie Holmes is returning to the small screen this fall on ABC's sophomore drama, Eli Stone.

read more | digg story

Burqa is like a prison: French-Muslim minister

Women who wear burqas live in a prison, a French minister said in an interview.
