One of my personal favorites among the new features that Windows 7 came with was the introduction of some awesome and long awaited keyboard shortcuts.

This article talks about 15 really cool keyboards shortcuts that are specific to Windows 7. I can bet that you don’t know all of them. Check them out, some of them will surprise you for sure.

1. Ctrl+Shift+N to Create a New Folder

Creating a new folder in Windows explorer is something we all need to do on a frequent basis. And until now, there was no default shortcut key available for this task. But Windows 7 changed that.

You could now use Ctrl+Shift+N to quickly create a new folder in Windows or anywhere on your computer where a folder can be created.

2. Ctrl+Shift+Click to Open a Program As Administrator

There are many instances when just clicking on the icon of the application and opening it doesn’t solve your purpose. You need to right click on it and click on “Run as Administrator” so that you can make the required changes to the app.

In Windows 7, this can be done with a keyboard shortcut. You just need to point your mouse cursor on that program and then click on it while pressing Ctrl+Shift keys to open it as administrator.

3. Shift+Right-Click Enhances Send to Menu

The above screenshot shows the default send to menu that I get when I simply right click on a program.

Now, if I press the Shift key, and while having it pressed, I right click on the icon, I get an enhanced send to menu. See the screenshot below to check how it looks.

Nice, isn’t it?

4. Shift+Right-Click on a Folder to Open Command Prompt

If you do Shift+right-click on a folder, you’ll find an option that says “Open command windows here.” If you love working with the command prompt, this option should come in handy.

5. Win+Space to Quickly Show Desktop

this is the keyboard shortcut version of that mouse cursor trick. Pressing the Win key and the space bar simultaneously shows you the desktop immediately.

6. Win+Up/Down/Left/Right for Moving the Active Window

If you intend to quickly move the active window to make space for other apps, you could do that by using the Win key and one of the arrow keys. Each arrow key would move the window in the direction it is meant to.

7. For Dual Monitors: Win+Shift+Left Arrow Key to Move Active Window to Left Monitor

If you are on a dual monitor setup using Windows 7 then you could press the Win+Shift+Left arrow key combination to move the active application window to the left monitor.

8. For Dual Monitors: Win+Shift+Right Arrow Key to Move Active Window to Right Monitor

Similarly, if you need to move the current window to the right monitor screen, just press Win+Shift+right arrow key.

9. Win+T to Get to Taskbar Items

You could use the key combination Win+T to toggle through the applications pinned on the taskbar in Windows 7.

10. Shift+Click on a Taskbar App to Open a New Instance of the App

Let’s say you’ve got a bunch of Chrome windows open. And you need to quickly open a new blank window of the browser. Here’s the way – point your cursor to the chrome icon on the taskbar, hit Shift and click on it. There you go!

11. Win+B to Move Focus to the System Tray

In a previous article, we talked about a technique to add more clocks to the default Windows clock in the system tray. Now, if you need to get there without using your mouse cursor, how’d you do that?

Answer – Win+B. That would move the focus on the system tray, and then you could use the arrow keys to cycle through the items, including the Windows clock.

12. Win+P for Quickly Connecting Your Laptop to a Projector

Windows 7 has a nifty projection menu feature which enables you to quickly connect your laptop to a projector or an extended monitor. Win+P is the keyboard shortcut for that purpose.

13. Win+1, Win+2..so on for Opening Taskbar Programs

Want to quickly open a program that’s pinned to your Windows 7 taskbar? You can press the Win key and the number corresponding to the location of the app on the taskbar.

14. Win+Pause helps you check System Properties

Need to take a quick look at what’s the processor model you are using, or may be check the device manager, or advanced system settings? You could use Win+pause key combination to open the system properties window.

15. Ctrl+Shift+Esc Can Quickly Windows Task Manager

I think this was in Vista too, I am not sure. But it’s a cool shortcut nevertheless. Just press the Ctrl key, Shift key and the ESC key simultaneously and you have the task manager pop up right in front!

Flywire filaments

Nike's Flywire technology, which debuts in Track and Field with the Nike Victory Spike pictured above, allows the creation of sports shoes whose only support comes from threads.

The key to Flywire is a lightweight skeleton of strategically placed engineered fibres.

This innovation, developed in the Nike Sports Research Lab, means that track spikes can for the first time be manufactured to weigh less than 100g.

Water Cube

The Beijing National Aquatics Centre is popularly known as the Water Cube, for obvious reasons.

Purpose-built for the Olympics in 2004, the Water Cube is built around an immense space frame, making it the biggest building in the world clad with EFTE, a plastic that is lighter and transmits more light than glass.

The bubble pattern seen on the outside of the Water Cube is formed of "pillows" made of the EFTE plastic.

Speedo LZR Racer suit

Speedo's new LZR Racer suits are built with Nasa-tested black sheathing that compresses a swimmer's body with 70 times more force than standard nylon-elastane fabric.

Computational fluid dynamics testing was used to discover which parts of a swimmer's body produce the most drag in water, then these parts were appropriately reshaped with polyurethane inserts.

Olympic torch

It took 34 designers one year to produce the winning Olympic torch design submitted by PC manufacturer Lenovo's Innovation Design Centre.

Intended to look like a scroll as a tribute to the Chinese invention of paper, the torch burns propane and is made from a polished magnesium-aluminium alloy.

The China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation designed the torch's burning system, which can withstand winds of up to 65 km/hour.

World's First Robotic Barman

The days of being served by friendly bar staff may be over after the world's first robotic barman was launched.
Not only is he faster than a human, he is an employer's dream - with no need for a loo break or a sick day.

The robot, called Mr Asahi, began his international tour at Selfridges in London, serving up shots of ice-cold Asahi beer to intrigued customers - with a robotic smile.

Made in Japan using a combination of robotics and animatronics, Mr Asahi can serve pints in less than two minutes, knocking off 13 minutes from the average 15 minute wait.

Eight engineers have taken 200 man-hours to assemble the quarter of a ton life-size robot.

He can be all yours for a cool £100,000 - a spokesperson from Sublime PR said.

Graham Sandry, event manager of Mr Asahi said: "He ties in relevantly to the modern image of Japan and also a modern up-to-date lifestyle."

Mr Asahi's movements involve some serious animatronics, developed with the use of compressed air, controlled and regulated through various valves and electrical switching mechanisms via a PC.

He even has facial features in LED lights which move from green to red as he strains to removes bottle tops.

Whilst Mr Asahi was seen as a bit of fun by most, not everyone was a fan of the robot barman.

Helda Smith from Mill Hill said: "I still would like to have contact with a real person. It's very creative though."

James Rankin from Scotland agreed. He said: "I prefer to have contact with human nature. Things are too automated as they are."

Another onlooker, Ernesto Lobera from Spain, expressed his own concerns over whether robots would take the jobs of bar staff.

He said: "I go to the bar to flirt with the bar man, so it would not be very fun for me."

But Asahi UK brand manager Christian Hamilton was convinced. "Having employed Mr Asahi and seen him at work I'm sure he'll be a great asset to the Asahi team," he said.

Why World Is Under Spam Attack

People would receive more than 70 Spam e-mails every day without protecting their computers, a study has found.
Security group McAfee recruited 50 people around the world and encouraged them to open themselves up to spam to see how many unwanted e-mails they received.

Participants were encouraged to register with websites and respond to all the SPAM messages they received.

In total, the people taking part received 104,000 messages, more than 2,000 each.

The UK received the fifth most messages, with more than 11,965 coming in, while it was the most popular target for the infamous Nigerian spam, with 23% of the world's total coming to UK residents.

This ruse sees people being contacted by Nigerians who claim they are the beneficiary of a long-lost relative's will in an effort to extract money from them.

McAfee showed in the experiment that spam is not only a nuisance but can also compromise performance.

Many attempt to install malware or viruses on computers, while the sheer volume can lead to a slowdown of performance on both local machines and networks.

Greg Day, a security analyst with McAFee, told Sky News Online that many people taking part had actually missed real e-mails because they were so busy trawling through unwanted messages.

He added: "It's like asking someone in the street for a home address - online if someone asks for an e-mail address we are just willing to hand it over.

"I am unwilling to hand my address out to anyone apart from someone I want to communicate with."

Simon Nicol, one of the UK participants, said he managed to track down some of the people sending the spam.

He told Sky News Online: "If I can track them down in five minutes how come our security people can track them down?"

Mr Day said: "It's easy to go in and do a reverse look-up and you will get to somewhere.

"You can find an origin point but is that origin point really the end target - it's worthwhile trying to stop that host but there are millions of PCs compromised."

Danni Williams, another participant, said that her behaviour had changed as a result of the experiment.

She told Sky News Online: "I'm a lot more aware of sites and giving my details away but I still surf the internet and join up to things, but I have two separate e-mails."

And she advised: "Be really aware, everyone is out to get you constantly and even when you try to get out of it they just send more and it's just a vicious cycle and you can't get out of it."

Electronic Arts has announced that 'FIFA Manager 09' is under development and will be released for PC in the UK in autumn this year.
As with the previous games in the series, 'FIFA Manager 09' contains all areas of club management, from signing new players to training to extending stadiums.

Promising improvements in graphics, sound, AI, and the 3D mode, 'FIFA Manger 09' will also include a new youth transfer market and match prediction tool.

Using this feature, players can put teams together freely and even assign form and fitness values to single players.

This allows matches in the real world of football to be simulated under realistic conditions in order to predict the outcome of a match.

Over a third of the 25,000 players in the game will sport player photos, while the game also features 1,500 clubs from 33 countries.

Further additions and tinkering can always be made with the editor as well.

A Boost For Your Mobile Phone

Femto- is an SI prefix (symbol f) in the SI system of units denoting a factor of 10−15 or 0.000 000 000 000 001, according to Wikipedia.
But in the context of mobile communications femtocell has come to mean the technique of connecting your mobile phone to its 3G network over the internet.
Ipaccess is the leading British firm in this area, having won awards and inward investment from none other than Qualcomm the American telecoms giant.
The idea is that we each have a small transmitter receiver device in our home, about the same size as and sitting alongside our wireless router.
As you leave the car and walk into the house, so your phone will discover the femtocell, and you will benefit not only from crystal clear calls (no more "..your breaking up, I'll call you back") but also will be able to enjoy all the online music, tv and information services that you use via your phone.
That is the theory - and it looks as if it is about to be put into practice.
All the major mobile phone companies are looking at this technology - which is already being used in its picocell format - in areas of traditionally poor mobile reception, such as shopping centres and transport hubs.
Initially if you have a partner and kids on different networks you will need several of these devices - one for each network - so watch this space for special deals to encourage families to take a package deal for all their mobile needs from the same supplier.
But why do I need this, when I have wifi already at home, and my handset can connect to the internet over that?
The ipaccess folks say that getting online over wifi can be tricky and not that reliable, so why not use the 3G technology that your phone thrives on inside the home as well as outside?
Costs are to be decided. But it could be as little as nil. At least in initial outlay.
If we start making more calls and using 3G services in our homes, there is revenue to be recouped that way.

Hackers Withdraw PINs from Citibank ATMs

7-Eleven stores are known for their convenience. Hackers conveniently tapped Citibank’s network ATMs within 7-Eleven stores to steal the PIN codes of customers.

The Associated Press reports that a recent court filing revealed scammers were able to net at least $2 million from October 2007 to March 2008 by exploiting a security hole in the ATM network through a sever at a third-party processor. While the ATMs are branded by Citibank, the company itself does not own or operate them, according to CrunchGear. That honor goes to Cardtronics and Fiserv.

A total of seven people have been arrested in the case. The trial for Yuriy Rakushchynets, Ivan Biltse and Angelina Kitaeva has already begun, reports vnunet.com. Speculation remains on exactly how the gang pulled off the theft and the number of Citibank customers who were effected.

Dawn of the Megazooms

With pocket-size point-and-shoot cameras peaking, camera makers have emerged from their R&D labs with a new generation of hybrids: mutants with superior vision. These cameras blend the simple controls of pocket models with high-quality optics and advanced features typically offered only on digital single-lens reflex units. The unfortunate moniker given to these cameras? Megazooms.

These units' defining features are larger lenses and high-power optical zooms. You also get manual control over ISO settings, aperture, and shutter speed. Don't expect to slip one of these behemoths into a pocket. These chunkier models fit in a camera bag or camping pack.

We tested six newer megazooms, from Canon, Casio, Fuji, Olympus, Panasonic, and Sony (the Canon is actually a 2007 model; the company hasn't yet announced an updated version for 2008). Another contender, Nikon's new Coolpix P80, was released too late to make our tests; an online review is planned.
