Guns In The AIR!!

2009-12-19T12:33:00.000-08:00

So picture it: six-something in the morning...sun beginning to creep into my apartment...I'm hung-over, but must get to my (fab) job. I stumble into my living room..."where is the light?" "oh no, it's too early for the light."...I turn on the TV instead...Rihanna's new video for "Hard" pours into my living room...I am jolted from my drunken/sleep-drived stupor!! and inspired beyond recourse. Semi-automatics...dookie shorts...pink tanks...grenades...bombs going off!! I smile wildly and stare blankly into my screen...she has set the tone for the rest of my day. Some may find the girl contrived, but I find her ravishing. Quite literally the girl has told us she's on the warpath and coming for blood. Viscous!!

"I just had an epiphany!...'I need to go to Tiffany!'"

So we all know how the Queen bee rappers of the mid-90's changed the proverbial rap and fashion game. Lil' Kim and her pasties, furs, and blatant designer-sponsorship. Foxxy Brown couldn't resist some Christian Lacroix or mink LV panties. Missy E. outfitted her Adidas track suits with baguettes of diamonds...I think you get my drift. Well, I believe that the rap ingenue, Nicki Minaj, has the chops to make it big. Not only does she have a certain way with the American language and a real love of leggings, she also has an inexplicable penchant for corsets...which we can fix. Either way, she took a rather sleek turn in this month's Complex and I had to concur: ol' girl is a 5* chick!

I love the color palette here...khaki upon cream upon the pale, pale gray...and I think everyone knows my opinion about socks with heels: in total support of!

Ladies Who Lunch

2009-12-12T06:44:00.000-08:00

Soooo, I kinda have to stay mum on the goings-on of my new(fab)job, but let's just say that I have reaped in quite the fun perks. Case in point? Invite to the Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall '10 collection this past week. Not my crowd, not my steez, necessarily...but who would resist the shared company of Anna, Kate (Lanphear), Joe Zee, OSCAR!, and his really cute son, Moises. Yeah...I think I have a style crush on the latter. But I digress! The collection, the collection: very Spanish inspired and definitely Oscar's attempt to be youthful, au courant, but still appeal to his staunchly loyal clientele of (fussy) UES ladies. Lots of texture, brocading, drama!, and vibrant color which any fashion company can appreciate at this moment. Oh! & the power pants: there were so many! The cuts, the colors...how could a girl choose just one?! Instead, I just chose to throw all of them into the mix! Enjoy!

Black girls IN fashion

2009-12-05T12:14:00.000-08:00

If only Elizabeth von Guttman had sat this one out, would we have seen a counter-hegemonic Black female body politic enacted. Shala...Naomi...yow!

Razzle Dazzle

2009-12-05T12:04:00.000-08:00

Funnily enough "Blue Crush" was on the other day and I was reminded of Kate's humble beginnings. What a difference a stylist can make, no?

Smoooooth...lush...pain...love...and all that falls in between. Sade returns this February after a nine-year hiatus. No one is safe.

Calender Girl

2009-12-05T11:51:00.000-08:00

Terry Richardson took over the Pirelli calender shoot this year, and the images are too hot! too handle! Which is always fun (at least in my book)! Love this sneak peek of the ladies who make the calender the hot and exclusive T & A market it is! Get it.

Cherchez la femme!

2009-12-05T11:37:00.000-08:00

Paris in the seventies...sex!, wine, romance, high-waisted pants! I love the images, the colors that immediately come to mind. Cool grays, soft blues, rich browns, oranges, and a crimson lip. Whisking away to your lover's home with a bottle of wine underneath your arm, the clicking and clacking of your platform heels against the streets below you. Yum! Tommy Ton, the genius behind blog, Jak & Jill, believes the days of 70s French romance are having a bit of a renaissance and I am totally game for a comeback. I am believing this is my era...rethinking my Fall closet...

Break It Off Here

J.Lo's newest video, "Fresh Out The Oven", just dropped to jaw-dropping moments of red lipstick!!, catsuits!!, and Louboutins!! She may have taken a tumble the other night at the AMA's, but the 40 year old, mother of twins still has that swagger.

Sssh: the greats are talking! Vogue's Hamish Bowles & DVF

Love how Chanel's smile and her diamond-encrusted spike play off each other. Such contrast!

Alexa in red...

Alexander...Hanelli...Vanessa: love the color pallete here

With fashion and technology the way it is these days, it's so easy to fall for and follow a beloved fashion blogger. We all have our special ones: Scott...Garance...Tommy...me?! Ha! Add Hanneli Mustaparta to that list, too. A former model and Danish MTV star, she's a budding street-style photographer and "it-girl", all wrapped up into a cleverly written, well-dressed, bedroom eyed package. Her site is bare-bone magic, and really focuses on the images she captures, the outfits she organizes, and her dalliances with design. Love this recent entry of her at the CFDA dinner. Tapped to blog for Vogue, she was able to get up-and-personal with some legends, ingenues, and the like: Hamish Bowles, DVF, Chanel Iman, Alexa Chung, Alexander Wang, Vanessa Traina. Jealous....

Lady (of color)

2009-11-23T18:09:00.000-08:00

Shala Monroque, media/fashion darling of this very, very moment, is quickly becoming a bit of a style blog star (Jak&Jill, Garance...), as photogs catch her on the stylish run! This post should only add fuel to the fire. The EIC of Pop Magazine, and the very Prada-loving gf of art dealer, Larry Gagosian, Shala has been showing up at events, only to shut them down. And what's startling refreshing about her presence on the scene, quite frankly, is that she's a brazen woman of color. I loves that, and her acerbic wit she shows off her own blog. But even more her very minimal but unexpected approach to fashion--tonal colors, sky-high stilts/artwork for shoes, and a slick back of the hair--is so dead-on, so unfussy, so yes!! Besides, we sista's got to stick together!!

WoW!

2009-11-23T17:58:00.000-08:00

Images that made me pause!! and clutch my pearls!! All from the December 2009 issue of VOGUE, I found myself mesmerized by Isabeli Fontana's beauty-shop apathy, Daria's gams, and the shocking neon (!!) played so well against the white spectacles! WoW!!

Cate, the Great

2009-11-23T17:56:00.000-08:00

Cate Blanchett: one of my favorite Australian imports! A chameleon, both professionally and sartorially.

"Hey Shawty...what yo name is?"

2009-11-23T17:49:00.000-08:00

Gaga got got!! Bey is the only artist out there who would invite you for a collabo, only to upstage you. Ouch.

I would gladly take that plastic bra in my size, however....

An Homage to Hermes

2009-11-22T08:54:00.001-08:00

My mother and I have an implicit agreement that in a few years, simply put, her Hermes scarves are mine! I had the contractual agreement drawn up a few years ago over a mother-daughter brunch, and it's as good as legal. At least in my eyes. So after reading ELLE's, "Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down" spread, I was chomping at the bit for my mother's collection! ELLE's Style director, Joe Zee, gathered 16 tastemakers and opened the beloved scarf up to their interpretation. I couldn't resist Krystal Simpson's look (or maybe it was the Christian Louboutin leopard print booties and those YSL pants she was wearing?) and that of Hannah Bronfman's. Although a great concept, it didn't really manifest itself as I thought Joe was intending. Instead of the scarves, I was much more interested in the outfits the scarves were adding a slight texture to. Oh, and all these kid's cool jobs!

Incoming Style Storm!

2009-11-22T08:33:00.000-08:00

Ever thought frolicking on the beach in your winter knits could ever be...well, de rigueur? Yeah, me neither! But ELLE has since proven me wrong with its "The Big Chill" spread. Styled by Camille Bidault-Waddington, red-headed trixie, Kate Somers, kicks up some sand in Vivienne Westwood platforms, Acne sweaters, Chloe sweatpants, and motorcycle boots. It's a bold romp through this season's oversized sweater trend, and gives a whole new definition to the term "beach bum"!

Brilliant...resilient...fanmail from 27 million

2009-11-22T08:16:00.000-08:00

Apologies are necessary, no? My bad. I've been neglectful, but I hope you don't take it too personally. Much change has happened in the past couple of weeks (WONDEROUS change, people), but still some things remain the same...like RiRi's interminable sense of style!! If the Diane Sawyer interview didn't impress you, perhaps the past couple of weeks in this lady's wardrobe will. Although the singer's fourth album (which drops manana) is titled Rated R, her look is far from restrictive. Try transgressive!

Beautiful right down to the BONE...

2009-10-28T15:05:00.000-07:00

Chills went down my spine when I caught wind of this spread styled by none-other than, scream king, Tim Burton. It's so deliciously kooky, creepy, and well...Burton! How old was I when I saw Beetlejuice for the first time?! A young Geena Davis...Winona...Alec B.: I must have been in diapers! I just love how Tim is so relentlessly true to himself and his vision. It's inspiring. I love when people can create worlds all unto themselves, that make perfect sense. He, Helena (Bonham Carter), and all his goblins must live a very happy life...if not an unorthodox one.
