Medicinal herbs were found in the personal effects of an "ice man", whose body was frozen in the Swiss Alps for more than 5,300 years. These herbs appear to have been used to treat the parasites found in his intestines. Anthropology or anthropologists theorize that animals evolved a tendency to seek out bitter plant parts in response to illness.
Indigenous healers often claim to have learned by observing that sick animals change their food preferences to nibble at bitter herbs they would normally reject. Field biologists have provided corroborating evidence based on observation of diverse species, such as chimpanzees, chickens, sheep and butterflies. Lowland gorillas take 90% of their diet from the fruits of Aframomum melegueta a relative of the ginger plant, that is a potent antimicrobial and apparently keeps shigellosis and similar infections at bay.
Researchers from Ohio Wesleyan University found that some birds select nesting material rich in antimicrobial agents which protect their young from harmful bacteria.
Sick animals tend to forage plants rich in secondary metabolites, such as tannins and alkaloids. Since these phytochemicals often have antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and antihelminthic properties, a plausible case can be made for self-medication by animals in the wild.
Some animals have digestive systems especially adapted to cope with certain plant toxins. For example, the koala can live on the leaves and shoots of the eucalyptus, a plant that is dangerous to most animals. A plant that is harmless to a particular animal may not be safe for humans to ingest. A reasonable conjecture is that these discoveries were traditionally collected by the medicine people of indigenous tribes, who then passed on safety information and cautions.
The use of herbs and spices in cuisine developed in part as a response to the threat of food-born pathogens. Studies show that in tropical climates where pathogens are the most abundant, recipes are the most highly spiced. Further, the spices with the most potent antimicrobial activity tend to be selected. In all cultures vegetables are spiced less than meat, presumably because they are more resistant to spoilage.

Herbalism

Herbalism is a traditional medicinal or folk medicine practice based on the use of plants and plant extracts. Herbalism is also known as botanical medicine, medical herbalism, herbal medicine, herbology, and phytotherapy The scope of herbal medicine is sometimes extended to include fungal and bee products, as well as minerals, shells and certain animal parts.
Many plants synthesize substances that are useful to the maintenance of health in humans and other animals. These include aromatic substances, most of which are phenols or their oxygen-substituted derivatives such as tannins. Many are secondary metabolites, of which at least 12,000 have been isolated — a number estimated to be less than 10% of the total. In many cases, these substances (particularly the alkaloids) serve as plant defense mechanisms against predation by microorganisms, insects, and herbivores. The Director-General has named the outbreak a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern.”
But, living in fear will only add fuel to the fire. While we do not have the power to stop the virus, we do have the means to take the necessary protective precautions. Some of them may seem like general habits of common sense, but it is always nice to see reminders in writing. Here they are:
1. Stay as far away as possible from anyone you know who is sick. Period.
2. Wash your hands. Wash your hands. Wash your hands.CBSmedical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton says even though the particles are “aerosolized and respiratory droplets,” you can put yourself at risk by touching your face. If soap is not available, use alcohol-based hand gels with at least 60 percent alcohol frequently.
3. Don’t sneeze or cough into your hands. That’s just like dipping your hands into a big bag of virus. Rather, sneeze into a tissue or a sleeve. Make sure you won’t be shaking hands or touching doorknobs with contaminated hands.
4. Masks can be your friends if you must be near people who are ill. According to the Centers for Disease Control, wearing an N-95 mask can be protective, but they are “not recommended for the general public at this point.”
5. Swine flu symptoms are similar to the pains of the regular flu. If you experience high fever, coughing, body aches and a runny nose for one to two days with no signs of getting better, visit your doctor. Your medical professional will test you for the virus. Unfortunately, there is no way to differentiate between having the regular flu and swine influenza until some time has gone by. Symptoms can appear two to seven days after exposure.
6. If you are sick, avoid leaving home except to see your doctor. Do not go to work or school while you’re ill. If you have to leave your house, wear a surgical mask so that you don’t spread germs to others.
7. If you are the parent of a young toddler, carry alcohol wipes with you wherever you go. It’s difficult to monitor thumb sucking at all times, but you can be prepared to effectively wipe away germs whenever you see your child engage in hand-to-mouth activity.
8. Don’t be afraid of appropriately cooked pork. You can still eat it (although it may not seem too appealing right now).
9. Follow your local health care advisories. Make it a point to stay on top of the latest swine flu findings, while continuing to lead your life the best way you know how. If you’re not ill, you don’t have to stay indoors. But, by all means, you should stay informed.
10. UPDATE: The Humane Society of the United States has a great and also kinda fun video about how to properly wash your hands and avoid spreading disease. The toughest thing they ask? Wash your hands for a full minute (they suggest singing ‘Happy Birthday’ aloud four times).

Swine Flu in india

The WHO has raised the Influenza Pandemic Alert to the highest level which is 6. - Federal Minister for Health, Mir Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani, on Monday confirmed the first case of the H1N1 virus, swine flu, in Pakistan, adding that the patient had recovered and the disease was not transmitted any further.
As many as 25 suspected patients were screened for swine flu and the situation was under control, as all preventive measures had been taken in that regard, the minister stated while replying to a written question on the floor of the National Assembly.
Informing about the availability of anti-viral drug, Tami-flu, in Pakistan, he said that the medicine was sufficiently available in government hospitals to treat any patient of swine flu. He maintained that the health ministry being cognisant of the risk posed to human health due to this disease had provided training to the health care providers to cope with any emergency like situation caused by the H1N1 virus.
“Due to increase in reported cases and fatalities associated with the swine flu, all precautionary measures have been adopted at airports and seaports to monitor the disease,” he continued. He said the health officers at the international airports, seaports and border posts were screening suspected travellers. The ministry of health was also planning to install thermal scanners at entry points to detect cases and procure swine flu pre-pandemic vaccine whenever it became available, he added.
He also informed the Lower House that the ministry had also taken interventions like social distances and personal hygiene. He said that in a circular issued, all educational institutions were advised to inform parents that children with flu like symptoms might not be sent to schools. Also general public had been advised to observe etiquettes while coughing and people with flu like symptoms must avoid visiting public places and physical contact with others, he added.
It is worth mentioning here that swine flu is a highly contagious acute respiratory disease of pigs and the virus is spread among pigs by aerosols, direct and indirect contact, and asymptomatic carrier pigs. Transmission of the virus from pigs to humans is not common and does not always lead to human influenza, often resulting only in the production of antibodies in the blood. If transmission does cause human influenza, it is called zoonotic swine flu. People with regular exposure to pigs are at increased risk of swine flu infection. The meat of an infected animal poses no risk of infection when properly cooked.
During the mid-20th century, identification of influenza subtypes became possible, allowing accurate diagnosis of transmission to humans. Since then, only 50 such transmissions have been confirmed. These strains of swine flu rarely pass from human to human. Symptoms of zoonotic swine flu in humans are similar to those of influenza and of influenza-like illness in general, namely chills, fever, sore throat, muscle pains, severe headache, coughing, weakness and general discomfort.

    1 2 3 4

pregnancy calculator

<!-- Original: Ronnie T. No matter what label is used, the fact is that these men are at increased risk for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, anal cancer, and psychologic and behavioral disorders.1
The rate of men who had sex with men in the previous year was thought to be 1.7 to 2 percent. However, surveys from 1996 to 2000 indicate that the rate is at least 3.1 to 3.7 percent.2 This discrepancy indicates that male-male sexual behavior often is underreported, and that previous estimates of the number of men who have sex with men may be too low. Therefore, a typical family physician can expect 3 percent or more of his or her male patients to be men who have had sex with men in the previous year.
Recent trends indicate a resurgence in risky behaviors that expose men who have sex with men to HIV infection and other STDs. The reported prevalence of men engaging in un-protected anal intercourse increased from 37 percent in 1993-1994 to 50 percent in 1996-1997.3 Disease risk frequently is not assessed, especially in younger men, in part because of numerous impediments to adequate care under the current health care system.4
Family physicians need an efficient system to identify and assess risk in men who have sex with men, so that appropriate screening and counseling interventions may occur. This article presents an organized risk-based preventive health assessment for men who have sex with men.
how to get pregnant

pregnancy stages

What Everyone Needs to Know About the Various Stages of Pregnancy
Pregnancy is such a critical state that keeping careful markings on what is happening in your body is important in order to ensure that safety is at the top of one's priority during such condition.
For pregnant women, it is important to note on the various stages of pregnancy so that you will be able to anticipate what changes to occur and tailor the care you are doing for your body, and for the loved ones, coordinate the support needed by the pregnant woman.
At such stage, it is advisable to keep a journal of yourself so that you will be able to note and track on every event that is happening in your body. Your doctor and yourself can use journals for the purpose of making sure that everything is all right and no needed medical support should be extended for you.
Stages of Pregnancy
While pregnancy is basically a matter of concern among women who are pregnant, it is also helpful for partners and loved ones to be aware on everything that is happening on the woman's body so that proper and specific support would be extended on each semester of pregnancy.
The various stages of pregnancy including the unique characteristics and changes that may happen are listed in detail in the next section.
A. First Trimester – The first semester of pregnancy is characterized by many symptoms a host of changes. This may be difficult for first timers for they would be experiencing the many symptoms and telltale pregnancy horrors typical for such condition.
Symptoms may include tiredness (typical morning sickness), changes on the size of breast and the body mass, vomiting and nausea among other things. Excessive urination may be experienced during this time due to the hormones circulating in the blood which is also brought about by the developing fetus is the uterus of a pregnant woman.
Moreover, before the first semester of pregnancy concludes, the fetus may grow to a size of a hazelnut and starts showing signs life such as heartbeat, and locomotive abilities (moving). This critical stage is also a sign of intensive and regular medical checkup ensuring the health of the fetus and the mother and keeping any more-than-usual pregnancy-related symptoms that may occur.
Nutritious diet is advised at this stage and all throughout the course of pregnancy while advising on keeping a regular and light physical exercise.
B. Second Trimester. The second semester is marked by more aggressive changes. Body figure dramatically changes in the 6th weeks and more pronounced contractions, known as Braxton Hicks contractions, would be experienced. It is also in this stage that your belly will start to become more prominent and you may feel the fetus growing inside you.
On week 20-22, uterus will start growing all the way down to your navel and several changes including the production of colostrum (most nutritious first milk) in your breast, and color on nipples and areolas and overall skin tone may bring discomfort to your appearance.
Also, blood vessels in several parts of your body where the fetus develops the most experiences severe pressure and may result to characteristic hemorrhoids or varicose veins. Pigmentations and other discolorations, called chloasma, may also become apparent during this period and may disappear after giving birth.
Ultimately, the end of the second semester shows more signs of the body development of the fetus as it grows the size of 22 to 25 cm (11 to 14 inches) and may weight around one and a half pounds and may do the usual “kicking”.
C. Third Trimester. The third semester is usually called the “preparation time” for childbirth. It is in this stage that your body will become less tolerable for pain and changes. You may start complaining on your lower back and your breast feeling “loaded” to the max.
This stage is also an opportunity for would-be moms to start taking those breastfeeding and childbirth exercises in order to better prepare them for that “big day”. This preparation scheme would eliminate some possible delivery spoof which occurs among parents who normally are not better prepared on such circumstances.
Theoretically, this stage is the most uncomfortable semester of pregnancy as you may experience leg cramps, lowerback ache, frequent urination or uncontrolled bladder activity, and more pronounced Braxton Hicks contractions.
bodybuilding articles

Body building is a popular pastime with millions of people across the world. Body building is a sport that is now hugely popular amongst many men and women around the world. Body building is the sport of developing your muscle fibers through the combination of weight training, increased caloric intake, and rest. Body building is the technique of "building" the maximum strength and muscle tone in the body through weightlifting. Body building is concerned with shaping and defining the body's musculature, or muscle system. Body building is popular with many celebrities today, both male and female, as a way of just staying fit, toned, and attractive without being overly muscled. Body building is a method of targeting muscles with multiple exercises. Body building is the best way to hold the control of how the body looks. Body building is a systematic way to develop a wonderful physique through the use of proper nutrition and exercise program that can sculpt strong, solid looking muscles.
Muscle:
Muscle mass can be significantly increased in as little as two weeks. Muscles require sufficient time for healing, once every week for directly hitting the muscle is better, but alot of Bodybuilders prefer 3 times a week in their routine. Muscles, tendons and ligaments apt to shorten over a period of time that restricts our range of motion and leaves us more prone to injury when abrupt stresses are placed on such structures. Muscles usually demand more work, time and devotion than the people generally think it does. Muscle building is a greater part of every bodybuilder. Muscles provide the needed movement to our body, The body is nothing but muscles and combination of several muscles working together. Muscles receive the signals from the central nervous system (CNS) of the body for the movements. Muscle pulls are the most common occurrences in the body building training routine. Many athletes who want to remain legal and yet gain muscle bulk and energy, use creatine instead of steroids. First of all, it pulls fluid into the muscles, thus hydrating the muscles. The more you workout, the more you sweat, the more dehydrated your muscles become. Simply put, creatine keeps the muscles wet and working. Strenuous athletic workouts dehydrate the body, tire the muscles and quickly deplete energy levels.
The Training Routine:
It may take longer to develop muscle strength and size, but when you have it, you have it as long as you keep training at an intense level. The natural bodybuilder must pay extra close attention to sound training practices, in order to continue that gradual, continuous climb up the muscle development ladder. If you make a chart listing all the positives versus the negatives when it comes to natural bodybuilding versus steroid induced training, the natural bodybuilding positives far outweigh the drug induced positives. Stay with your training and your freshman fifteen will be MUSCLE not flab. While weight training and body building is helpful in sculpting a great figure, aerobic exercise is the cornerstone to any workout and it is the foundation for a healthy lifestyle. Weight training to be fit does not always have to mean bulging biceps and over-accentuated muscles.
Body Building Tips and Video:
As you progress in weight training and move on to hardcore weight lifting and body building, having the proper technique will definitely add to your workouts. The woman can boost her metabolism if she starts systematic weight training for getting the fit and stronger body within just a few weeks. The training passion and amount should be in line with what the man or woman can do easily and safely. Different forms of resistance can be used when training for strength. It is a good idea to get a Bodybuilding Tips magazine or a good video to watch before performing the routine on your own, a good Bodybuilding video will help you alot, it will also show you the right way to build your body without injury. Before starting any type of Bodybuilding training or routine consult your doctor.
Diet:
Diet and nutrition play a key role in body building and those that workout a lot tend to be on body building supplements that are loaded with proteins and valuable minerals and vitamins. Dietary protein which has enough amino acids in it, its a good way to repair your muscles fast. Don't get duped into using strange diets, pills, or even dangerous exercises. The concerning thing about supplements is that anything classified as a dietary supplement is not required to meet any FDA or other standards. Before taking a supplement try to make modifications to your diet that might achieve the same goals. So there you have it, a supplement is something added to the diet to make up for a nutritional deficiency or imbalance, they are not intended to substitute for eating a balanced diet. Once you give up the strict diet that most body builders follow, as well as exercising, the body will gain weight very quickly. You need to be ready to dedicate 4-6 hours a day in a gym working out and putting yourself on the proper diet so you can get the best results with all your hard work in the gym.
Protein:
Protein and fat servings are especially helpful during the 30 minutes following a workout to help repair and build new muscle. Creatine also stimulates the uptake of amino acids in the proteins, which means that the more that it's used the more muscle that may be grown. Glutamine containing products are protein shakes and good quality protein powders; it can also be added to protein shakes for added potency. While body building, you must follow a strict protein diet. After you have given up exercising, you must continue doing this, because if you suddenly stop the protein intake and replace it with regular food, the body will not recognize it and will start assimilating it as fat. Thereafter, you let your muscles rest and feed them with a proper diet rich in protein so that the muscle fibers recover. Supplement your bodybuilding workouts with whey protein. The recovery of the muscles also can happen in the presence of sufficient amino acids and the only source of amino acids is the dietary protein. Body builders generally need higher quality protein with the better BV instead of depending on proteins like soy which is mostly averted because of its estrogenic properties. Most strength trainers get both protein and fat from meats such as beef, chicken, pork or fish.
Steroids:
Steroids are usually used for a short duration of say 6-8 weeks with a substantial period of time elapsing before starting on the next course of steroids. Steroids create a positive nitrogen balance, lower cortisol and raise blood testosterone levels. Steroids are known to be very hazardous to your health and their effects on muscle are at most temporary. Supplementation and steroids started to proliferate when volume strength training became the training system of the day. With the science of supplementation becoming so advanced there are now products that imitate illegal steroids. Bodybuilders compare clenbuterol to such steroids as Winstrol and Oxandrolone, The drug is mildly anabolic with great fat burning properties. It should be added that increasing body temperature is believed to magnify the effects of steroids, since the rate of protein processing is increased. Bodybuilders stack steroids because they find that drugs sometimes magnify each other's effects by a process known as synergism. Prior to 1991, bodybuilders could use steroids with relative immunity. Given the social stigma of using steroids and the potential for doing jail time, bodybuilders should check out the latest legal steroid analogs. True; it is a much slower process but the long term gains far outweigh the adverse affects that even legal steroids may have on your body over an extended period of time. I have known people who have died, and even been thrown into jail for using, and selling anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids are illegal if not administered by a physician.
Conclusion:
Body Building is not for Everyone: Arnold Schwarzenegger body building is not for everyone. Body building is the sport that revolves around developing fine muscular cuts while shedding excess body fat. Body building is the most effective way to toughen and strengthen your muscles and gain power and strength. Body building is also referred to as art of displaying your body muscles in an attractive format. Body building is, in a way, an extreme sport. Body building is a form of sport that people engage in to develop muscular, toned bodies through the use of controlled nutrition and diet plus intensive targeted physical training; this is mainly done for the purpose of developing a strong and muscular physique. Body building is really more than a sport – it is a mind, body, and soul endeavor.
Herbal tips

1. The discipline has
evolved over millennia by drawing on the religious beliefs and
social structures of numerous indigenous peoples, by exploiting
natural products in their environments, and more recently
by developing and validating therapeutic and preventive
approaches using the scientific method. Public health and
medical practices have now advanced to a point at which
people can anticipate—and even feel entitled to—lives that
are longer and of better quality than ever before in human
history.
Yet despite the pervasiveness, power, and promise of contemporary
medical science, large segments of humanity either
cannot access its benefits or choose not to do so. More than
80 percent of people in developing nations can barely afford
the most basic medical procedures, drugs, and vaccines. In the
industrial nations, a surprisingly large proportion of people
opt for practices and products for which proof as to their safety
and efficacy is modest at best, practices that in the aggregate are
known as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) or as
traditional medicine (TM).
Much of this book considers the formidable challenges to
advancing human health through the further dispersion of
effective and economical medical practices. This chapter considers
both proven and unproven but popular CAM and TM
approaches and attempts to portray their current and potential
place in the overall practice of medicine.
With globalization, the pattern of disease in developing
countries is changing. Unlike in the past, when communicable
diseases dominated, now 50 percent of the health burden
in developing nations is due to noncommunicable diseases,
such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension,
depression, and use of tobacco and other addictive substances.
Because lifestyle, diet, obesity, lack of exercise, and
stress are important contributing factors in the causation of
these noncommunicable diseases, CAM and TM approaches
to these factors in particular will be increasingly important
for the development of future health care strategies for the
developing world.

EAT ONLY WHEN HUNGRY

If we do this we eat only to supply the demands of the body. We cannot
repeat too often the admonition, do not eat if not hungry.
If this plan were followed the present three meals-a-day plan would end.
Also the practice of many of eating between meals and in the evening
before retiring would cease. For most people real hunger would call for
about one meal a day, with occasionally some small amounts of fruit during
the day.
Hunger is the "voice of nature" saying to us that food is required. There is
no other true guide as to when to eat. The time of day, the habitual meal
time, etc., are not true guides.
Although genuine hunger is a mouth and throat sensation and depends
upon an actual physiological need for food, muscular contractions of the
stomach accompany hunger and are thought by physiologists, to give rise
to the hunger sensation.
Carlson, of the Chicago University, found that in a man who had been
fasting two weeks, these gastric "hunger" contractions had not decreased,
although there was no desire for food. The same has been observed in
animals. Indeed these contractions are seen to increase and yet they do
not produce the sensation of hunger. I do not consider these so-called
"hunger-contractions" as the cause of hunger. Real hunger is a mouth and
throat sensation.
But there is a difference between hunger and what is called appetite.
Appetite is a counterfeit hunger, a creature of habit and cultivation, and
may be due to any one of a number of things; such as the arrival of the
habitual meal time, the sight, taste, or smell of food, condiments and
seasonings, or even the thought of food. In some diseased states there is
an almost constant and insatiable appetite. None of these things can
arouse true hunger; for, this comes only when there is an actual need for
food.
One may have an appetite for tobacco, coffee, tea, opium, alcohol, etc., but
he can never be hungry for these, since they serve no real physiological
need.
Appetite is often accompanied by a gnawing or "all gone" sensation in the
stomach, or a general sense of weakness; there may even be mental
depression. Such symptoms usually belong to the diseased stomach of a
glutton and will pass away if their owner will refrain from eating for a few
days. They are temporarily relieved by eating and this leads to the idea that
it was food that was needed. But such sensations and feelings do not
accompany true hunger. In true hunger one is not aware that he has a
stomach for this, like thirst, is a mouth and throat sensation. Real hunger
arises spontaneously, that is without the agency of some external factor,
and is accompanied by a "watering of the mouth" and usually by a
conscious desire for some particular food.
Dr. Gibson says that, "The condition known as appetite, … with its source
and center in nervous desire, and its motive in self-indulgence, is a mere
parasite on life, feeding on its host--the man himself--whose misdirected
imagination invites it into his own vital household; while hunger, on the
other hand, is the original, constitutional prompter for the cell-world calling
for means to supply the true need and necessities of man's physical nature.
… Appetite does not express our needs, but our wants; not what we really
need, but what we think we need. It is imagination running riot, fashioning
out of our gluttonous greed an insatiable vampire which grows with our
wants, and increases its power until finally it kills us unless we determine to
kill it. … As long as our attention is absorbed in the pleasures of the table,
in the gratification of eating for its own sake, and in the introduction of new
combinations to bring about stimulating effects, we are increasing the
power of our appetite at the expense of our hunger."
The hungry person is able to eat and relish a crust of dry bread; he who
has only an appetite must have his food seasoned and spiced before he
can enjoy it. Even a gourmand is able to enjoy a hearty meal if there is
sufficient seasoning to whip up his jaded appetite and arouse his palsied
taste. He would be far better off if he would await the arrival of hunger
before eating.
There is no doubt of the truth of Dr. Geo. S. Weger's thought that "appetite
contractions in the stomach are often excited by psychic states, as
influenced by the senses." Appetite contractions thus aroused, are of
distinct advantage in digesting a meal if they are super-added to preexisting
hunger contractions. We know that these psychic states increase
the flow of the digestive juices--make the stomach "water" as well as the
mouth--and enhance digestion.
Dr. Claunch says, "the difference between true hunger and false craving
may be determined as follows: when hungry and comfortable it is true
hunger. When hungry and uncomfortable it is false craving. When a sick
person misses a customary meal, he gets weak before he gets hungry.
When a healthy person misses a customary meal, he gets hungry before
he gets weak."
If we follow the rule to eat only when truly hungry, those people who are
"hungry" but weak and uncomfortable would fast until comfort and strength
returned. Fasting would become one of the most common practices in our
lives, at least, until we learn to live and eat to keep well and thus eliminate
the need for fasting.
There are individuals who are always eating and always "hungry." They
mistake a morbid irritation of the stomach for hunger. These people have
not learned to distinguish between a normal demand for food and a
symptom of disease. They mistake the evidences of chronic gastritis or of
gastric neurosis for hunger.
Hunger, as previously pointed out, is the insistent demand for food that
arises out of physiological need for nourishment. Appetite, on the other
hand, is a craving for food which may be the result of several different
outside factors operating through the mind and senses. Anything that will
arouse an appetite will encourage one to eat, whether or not there exists an
actual need for food.
Hunger may be satisfied and appetite still persist, a not unusual thing. Our
many course dinners, with everything especially prepared to appeal to the
taste and smell, are well designed to keep alive appetite, long after hunger
has been appeased. No man is ever hungry when he reaches the dessert,
so commonly served after a many course dinner. Few, though filled to
repletion and perhaps uncomfortable in the abdomen, ever refuse to eat
the dessert. It is especially prepared to appeal to appetite. This style of
eating necessarily and inevitably leads to overeating and disease. Too
many articles of food at a meal overstimulate and induce overeating.
Hunger and the sense of taste are the only guides as to the quantity and
character of food required. If we eat when we are not hungry, and if the
delicate sensibilities of taste have been dulled and deadened by gluttonous
indulgence and by condiments, spices, alcohol, etc., it ceases to be a
reliable guide.
The unperverted instinct of hunger craves most keenly the food that is most
needed by the body and the unperverted taste derives the most pleasure
and satisfaction out of the food or foods demanded, and will be satisfied
when we have consumed sufficient of such food or foods to supply the
body's needs. But, if we have been in the habit of crowding the stomach
when there is no demand for food, just because it is meal time, or because
the doctor ordered it, and we know no other indication that enough food
has been consumed, than that the stomach can hold no more, we are
headed for disaster. The existence of a natural demand for food indicates
that food is required by the body and that the organs of the body are ready
to receive and digest it. Eating when there is no time, or as a social duty, or
because one has been able to stimulate an appetite, is a wrong to the
body. Both the quality and quantity, and the frequency of meals should be
regulated by the rules of hygiene rather than by those of etiquette and
convenience.

Hygiene Hypothesis

According to the hygiene hypothesis, proposed by David P. Strachan, allergic diseases are caused by inappropriate immunological responses to harmless antigens driven by a TH2-mediated immune response. Many bacteria and viruses elicit a TH1-mediated immune response, which down-regulates TH2 responses. The first proposed mechanism of action of the hygiene hypothesis stated that insufficient stimulation of the TH1 arm of the immune system lead to an overactive TH2 arm, which in turn led to allergic disease. In other words, individuals living in too sterile an environment are not exposed to enough pathogens to keep the immune system busy. Since our bodies evolved to deal with a certain level of such pathogens, when it is not exposed to this level the immune system will attack harmless antigens, and thus normally benign microbial objects, like pollen, will trigger an immune response.

The hygiene hypothesis was developed to explain the observation that hay fever and eczema, both allergic diseases, were less common in children from larger families, which were presumably exposed to more infectious agents through their siblings, than in children from families with only one child. The hygiene hypothesis has been extensively investigated by immunologists and epidemiologists and has become an important theoretical framework for the study of allergic disorders. It is used to explain the increase in allergic diseases that has been seen since industrialization, and the higher incidence of allergic diseases in more developed countries. The hygiene hypothesis has now expanded to include exposure to symbiotic bacteria and parasites as important modulators of immune system development, along with infectious agents.

Epidemiological data support the hygiene hypothesis. Studies have shown that various immunological and autoimmune diseases are much less common in the developing world than the industrialized world and that immigrants to the industrialized world from the developing world increasingly develop immunological disorders in relation to the length of time since arrival in the industrialized world. Longitudinal studies in the third world demonstrate an increase in immunological disorders as a country grows more affluent and, presumably, cleaner. The use of antibiotics in the first year of life has been linked to asthma and other allergic diseases. The use of antibacterial cleaning products has also been associated with higher incidence of asthma, as has birth by Caesarean section rather than vaginal birth.

Allergic diseases

Allergic diseases are strongly familial: identical twins are likely to have the same allergic diseases about 70% of the time; the same allergy occurs about 40% of the time in non-identical twins. Allergic parents are more likely to have allergic children, and their allergies are likely to be more severe than those from non-allergic parents. Some allergies, however, are not consistent along genealogies; parents who are allergic to peanuts may have children who are allergic to ragweed. It seems that the likelihood of developing allergies is inherited and related to an irregularity in the immune system, but the specific allergen is not.

The risk of allergic sensitization and the development of allergies varies with age, with young children most at risk. Several studies have shown that IgE levels are highest in childhood and fall rapidly between the ages of 10 and 30 years. The peak prevalence of hay fever is highest in children and young adults and the incidence of asthma is highest in children under 10.Overall, boys have a higher risk of developing allergy than girls, although for some diseases, namely asthma in young adults, females are more likely to be affected. Sex differences tend to decrease in adulthood.Ethnicity may play a role in some allergies, however racial factors have been difficult to separate from environmental influences and changes due to migration.Interestingly, it has been suggested that different genetic loci are responsible for asthma, specifically, in people of European, Hispanic, Asian, and African origins.

Allergy definition

Allergy is a disorder of the immune system often also referred to as atopy. Allergic reactions occur to normally harmless environmental substances known as allergens; these reactions are acquired, predictable, and rapid. Strictly, allergy is one of four forms of hypersensitivity and is called type I (or immediate) hypersensitivity. It is characterized by excessive activation of certain white blood cells called mast cells and basophils by a type of antibody known as IgE, resulting in an extreme inflammatory response. Common allergic reactions include eczema, hives, hay fever, asthma, food allergies, and reactions to the venom of stinging insects such as wasps and bees.

Mild allergies like hay fever are highly prevalent in the human population and cause symptoms such as allergic conjunctivitis, itchiness, and runny nose. Allergies can play a major role in conditions such as asthma. In some people, severe allergies to environmental or dietary allergens or to medication may result in life-threatening anaphylactic reactions and potentially death.

A variety of tests now exist to diagnose allergic conditions; these include testing the skin for responses to known allergens or analyzing the blood for the presence and levels of allergen-specific IgE. Treatments for allergies include allergen avoidance, use of anti-histamines, steroids or other oral medications, immunotherapy to desensitize the response to allergen, and targeted therapy.

HOMEMADE BEAUTY

Avocado Facial
Avocado is a naturally rich moisturizer. Put the fruit in the blender first. Make sure that the items are smaller
than a golf ball so they will blend completely. Add the liquid ingredients
next.
2. Fasten the lid and press the start button. Use high speed for about 20-
30 seconds.
3. Stop the blender and check to see if the ingredients are well blended.
Sometimes the frozen fruit will jam under the blade. If there is jammed
fruit, use a spatula to unjam the fruit, and blend again.
4. Once the mixture is evenly blended, slowly add two ice cubes through
the opening of the blender lid. Keep adding one or two ice cubes at a
time until the blender sounds smooth instead of gravelly. If your blender
is not strong enough to blend ice cubes, omit the ice and substitute just
enough ice cold water so that the shake will have a milkshake
consistency.
5. If the shake/smoothie is too thin, add more fruit or ice. If it’s too thick,
add more liquid.

A smoothie is basically a blended fruit drink. The best-tasting smoothies are made from fruit that is fresh or frozen, and not canned.

All smoothies begin with a liquid base. This can be orange juice, milk or another liquid.

You can make a frostier drink by freezing fresh fruit before making a smoothie.

Smoothies are best when they're fresh out of the blender, but they can be frozen the night before, as well – just remove the smoothie from the freezer about an hour before drinking.

You can replace a meal with a smoothie or shake by adding a scoop of high-quality protein powder and a tbsp. of high-quality olive or flax oil.

juice fruit

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" For example, fruit
flavored drinks and soft drinks are not a substitute for real fruit. Many of
these drinks only contain 10% real fruit juice. The very best drinks are
made from whole fruit and you can make great fruity healthy drinks at
home.
1. You'll need an inexpensive juice machine.
2. All fruits and vegetables should be juiced raw.
3. Small seeded fruit, such as watermelon and pears, may be juiced with
their seeds with the exception of papaya and apple seeds. Orange and
grapefruit seeds might impart a bitter taste to your juice. Remove the
large pits from fruits like peaches and nectarines, etc.
4. Peel all fruits and vegetables that are not organically grown because the
peel is where most of the chemical residues can be found. While most
skins of organically grown fruits and vegetables may be left on, with the
exception of waxed produce, the skins of pineapples, kiwis, oranges,
grapefruits and papaya should be removed.
5. Choose fresh ripe produce. Rubbery vegetables, bruised fruit, wilted
greens and over or under-ripe fruits will produce juices that are neither
tasty nor healthful.
6. Cut the fruits or vegetables into pieces that will fit into the mouth of your
juice machine. Turn the juice machine on and push the pieces through
the mouth of the juicer. As you juice, pulp will collect in a large
receptacle. If you don't clean the pulp out right away, it will develop a sour odor and tiny gnats and fruit flies may appear after 8 to 10 hours.
7. It is best to drink freshly made juices within one day.
juice fruit

what is fruit

ABOUT FRUIT JUICES AND SMOOTHIES!

A FUN and EASY way to get more vitamins & minerals into your diet is by
drinking freshly made fruit juices, vegetable juices, and by blending thick
and frothy smoothies and shakes from frozen fruit.
A friend of mine describes drinking freshly made fruit juices like this:
"If you have never taken a mouthful of cantaloupe juice or strawberry
juice mixed with apple, you simply have not lived. Blueberry juice is a
taste of liquid heaven."
Freshly made juices are a tremendous source of bio-available vitamins and
minerals which are the partners of enzymes and co-enzymes. Vitamins
activate enzymes and without vitamins, enzymes could not carry out their
work, and we could not live.
Enzymes act as catalysts in hundreds of thousands of chemical reactions
that take place throughout your body, and are essential for digesting,
absorbing and converting food into body tissue. Enzymes produce energy
at the cellular level and are critical for most of the metabolic activities taking
place in your body every second of every day.
Another benefit of drinking fresh juices and smoothies is that your body can
absorb MORE of the vitamins and minerals than if you were to eat the fruits
and vegetables whole! Many of the nutrients are TRAPPED in the fiber and
by blending fruits and vegetables, you break down the fiber and release the
vital nutrients.
Example:
When you eat a raw carrot, you are only able to assimilate a small
percentage of the available beta carotene. When a carrot is juiced,
removing the fiber, a LARGE percentage of the beta carotene can be
assimilated by your body.
