Mumbai: Low-cost carrier AirAsia India maiden is all set to launch operations from June 12 with a Bangalore-Goa maiden flight. The airline is offering a promotional fare of Rs 990 ($17) for flights between the two cities, cheaper than a second-class train ticket.

‘Our first flight is on Bangalore-Goa route,we are committed to making air travel affordable,’ said Mittu Chandilya,Air Asia. This is the fourth budget carrier in the country, after IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir.

AirAsia India reportedly sold out 25,000 promo seats within 48 hours of opening for bookings, the airline said in a release. Tickets for its inaugural service were sold out within 10 minutes.

The carrier's founder and chief executive Tony Fernandes, a millionaire former music executive, was in a celebratory mood ahead of the flight. Tony Fernandes further twitted "It's a proud day for me as my dad was from Goa," on Twitter.

AirAsia’s action on ACCC claims

Here's an interesting article regarding the lawsuit filed against Air Asia:

AirAsia is carefully reviewing the contents of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) claims, filed in the Federal Court of Australia on 17 January 2012 in relations to fares published on the airline’s website for Australian consumers.

In a media statement released on 26 January, the airline said it takes legal and everyday commitment to its consumers very seriously and always seeks to conduct business in a fair, ethical and proper manner and in full compliance with the applicable laws.

The issue in question of whether all taxes and charges were displayed to customers for relevant flights appeared to have arisen for an IT issue in September 2011. Corrective action was taken by the airline as soon as they were aware of the matter, focusing on getting all relevant information to customers and resolving the issue on the website.

The recently released $99AUD promo fares for the new Sydney to Kuala Lumpur route by AirAsia X have not been affected by the issue.

Vijay47: In all fairness to AirAsia, I do not understand this ‘hidden costs' issue. Sure, there is often a difference between the sensational advertised price and the final amount payable but remember that not all tickets even for the same destination on the same day cost the same - the early bird catches the cheaper worm.

Most importantly, the final price is always stated before you enter your credit card details. How can you then claim to feel cheated? AirAsia is not SIA (Singapore Airlines) - it is a budget airline that operates to make some profit, it is not a charity.

Having said that, I feel AirAsia is cunning in its inclusion of insurance almost without our knowing. It should be ‘Click to include', not the reverse.

They should also ponder why CEO Tony Fernandes is personally attacked so much, something that does not occur with other airlines. Perhaps people fear that Tony is another Tajudin Ramli in the making, especially with the AirAsia-MAS hook-up.

And owning an EPL (English Premier League) team does not help either.

Malaysiasakit: AirAsia blindsided by what? Incompetent executives or by the company's greed? Even if you start a milk bar (kedai runcit) in Australia, you need to observe legal requirements on price labelling, food safety, signage and licensing, etc.

How a public-listed company do business in a foreign country without proper legal due diligence is beyond me.

Meanwhile, the company is stuffing up travel plans of customers who booked tickets for London, Paris, New Delhi and Mumbai. Don't expect us to believe this is an oversight.

Onyourtoes: See, when issue like this emerge, it is always the technical glitch or an IT issue. It is not just AirAsia, almost all corporations are like that - things which are not in their immediate favour, it is glitches and IT issues while things to their favour, they never make mistakes or have any glitches.

By the way, it is not sufficient just to be "in full compliance with all the applicable laws". That is the minimum requirements that everyone must adhere to.

Corporations need to do more than that - is this not what most of the corporate bigwigs were talking about all the time, social responsibility and being fair and even-handed with consumers and customers?

Wanderer: This is a typical response from Malaysian-owned companies - play ignorant and that means ‘innocent' from fault.

Why not have the courage to admit the mistake and promise to remedy the situation with a sincere apology to its customers?

AirAsia, your response is not good enough. Show responsibility and sincerity.

Clever Voter: AirAsia would have realised by now the meaning of responsible business. You can dazzle the local public with much PR (public relation) messages, but not in the more advanced societies.

This is a good lesson for this so-called low-cost airline. I am always wary of their business model and cost structure. You can fool some but not everyone.

WeCANLive: Again I am stressing this. The ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) is not an Australian watchdog. It's just wanting to protect Australian interests.

All of you all talk so much. Why not you go online and book a ticket to Sydney and tell me whether any other airline has a cheaper return fare to Sydney. Then you start talking to me.

Yes, definitely there are hidden costs - how do you expect an airline to be profitable. If you want real cheap, do not pre-confirm seat numbers; do not book the bus ride; do not eat.

Kgen: Don't take us for morons. Do you think the ACCC will take legal action over a temporary computer glitch? Deceptive fare pricing is something AirAsia has indulged in from day one.

They make it particularly hard for people to compare prices between airlines. AirAsia needs to hide their real price because they practise a sliding scale pricing depending on when you book.

Those who book early get good prices while latecomers are charged more then regular airlines. Shame on AirAsia for not being transparent on prices.

As for their service, it is really the pits. If you need to contact them to correct something which may not be your fault, God help you because you'll be psychologically, mentally and physically traumatised by AirAsia staff.

Bob Teoh: How many lies need AirAsia have to tell - that it was not aware of the incomplete pricing information until the Australian authorities filed a case against it? Come on, AirAsia's promotion pitch has always been like that from day one.

If that's not enough, it now blames a computer glitch. Tony, why can't you just display an all-in price and let passengers whether they still want to fly with AirAsia. I bet they will still fly with you.

This will also make easier on your booking software and save passengers doing all the unnecessary numerous clicks.

GoneBananas: Being up-front in business is the only way to go. Thanks for giving AirAsia a smack on the wrist on behalf of all customers who have been pissed off about their sneaky ways for years, but don't have the legal resources to take legal action against corporate malfeasance and greed.

Jeremy Ng: AirAsia may be cheaper, even after adding all the other charges. But their promotional tag lines are obviously misleading.

Take the example of the very low promo fare advertised which you find it difficult to get. As a responsible corporation, maybe AirAsia should indicate the number of seats offered at this price. Without this, it is opened to abuse and cheating.

As a marketing tool, it does attract many consumers attention and interest. It is time our local authorities take the lead from the Australian suit to implement some controls to stop AirAsia and others from misleading consumers.

Ksn: Now that AirAsia is caught with its pants down, please do not come up with cock-and-bull stories. Start now to quote prices, to and fro, including minimum baggage - checked in and hand - one meal and airport charges. That is basic.

Charge for other services at reasonable rates. Do not charge for telephoning AirAsia and website booking, which is pure nonsense.

Start now because you have a lot of lost credibility to redeem. My view is that with transparency, you can do better business and do not forget there are other options for travelers in and from the region, may be paying a little more.

Give it some serious thought, Tony. This issue with Australia should be an eye-opener for you and AirAsia.

Getting the best last-minute airfares
You'll often get the best fares if you book at least 7 to 21 days ahead of departure. Otherwise, your best bet is Priceline.com's "Name your own price" feature or Hotwire.com. Also take a look at Lastminute.com which packages last minute airfares with hotel and rental car deals -- sometimes for less than what you'd pay for airfare alone.

When to use a real live travel agent
As good as do-it-yourself online sources can be, your friendly neighborhood travel agent may have some tricks up her sleeve to save you money. Let's say, for example, that you get an airfare alert that fares from Houston to Honolulu are $800 round-trip. But who knew that Dallas to Honolulu, same dates, is $300? Or that you can fly from Houston to Dallas for $100 and connect onward? A savvy travel agent.

Getting a refund when the fare drops after you buy
Several domestic US airlines will give you a full refund, in the form of a voucher good for future travel, if the airfare drops between the time you buy and time you fly -- if and only if you fly on the same itinerary. Find details in this chart.

Factor in the fees
A low fare on one airline could turn out to be not so low once fees are added on. Airlines are making most of their profits these days not from selling you airfares but with all those fees for baggage and other perks. In addition to checked bag fees (chart) there are even fees for using your frequent flyer miles and for other services such as changing a travel date or bringing a pet on board.

Is there a "magic" hour or day to buy?
In a word, no. It's true that the airlines' weekend deals come out Monday to Wednesday, and some airlines announce their sales early in the week, but if you limit yourself to searching just on those days, you'll miss out. A good fare can pop up any moment of the week.

Best days to travel
Although a low airfare can appear at any time, one thing's for certain: it's cheaper to fly on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Saturday is also a low-fare day. If traveling internationally, Monday to Wednesday is often the sweet spot.

Airfare predictions
Speaking of "when to buy," Bing.com/travel purports to offer accurate airfare predictions, indicating whether the site thinks a fare will go up or down, and it's certainly worth a try, but it's not always accurate. New airline to operate in Zamboanga

The Aero Majestic Airways is set to start operations from Zamboanga City to Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga City to Dipolog City and vice versa on September 19, 2011.

Aero Majestic Airways Ticketing Officer Jenny Delo Santos Hau said their airplane is a YS 11, 64 seater and will be piloted by Capt. Maximo Vallejo.

She said flights for Zamboanga City to Cagayan de Oro will start on September 19 while the Zamboanga City Dipolog route will start on September 27. The promo fare will be P999 for both routes.

“El routes diatun nohay na otro airlines. This will help the senior citizens, businessmen lessen their travel time.” Hau said.

If a passenger will take the bus, it will take more or less 12 hours to reach Cagayan de Oro, while the same distance will only take one hour by plane. For Dipolog, the bus will take about 8 hours while it will only take less than one hour for plane.

Zamboanga to Cagayan flights will be on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and Zamboanga to Dipolog flights will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

According to Hau, more than 30 tickets were already sold for the trip to Cagayan and Dipolog.

Solons urge check of policies

MANILA, Philippines — Saying that air travel is now a preferred mode of transportation in the country, eight neophyte congressmen sought a congressional investigation into alleged questionable and lopsided policies of local airline companies contained in “fine print” provisions in budget fare airline tickets.

The eight lawmakers, namely: Reps. Carol Jayne B. Lopez (You Against Corruption and Poverty Party-list); Seth Frederic P. Jalosjos (NP, Zamboanga del Norte) Gabriel Luis R. Quisumbing (LP, Cebu); Lord Allan Jay Q. Velasco (LP, Marinduque); Mark Aaron Sambar (PBA Party-list); Romeo M. Jalosjos Jr. (NPC, Zamboanga Sibugay); Sherwin Tugna (CIBAC Partylist) and Jonathan C. Yambao (LP, Zamboanga Sibugay), filed House Resolution No. 1634 urging the Committee on Transportation to lead the inquiry in aid of legislation.

The lawmakers said they have been receiving numerous complaints from their constituents against matters of flight delays and cancellations and alleged exorbitant fees and charges imposed on passengers.

In filing HR 1634, the eight solons said Congress should to look into the “policies and practices of airline companies on flight delays/cancellations, fees, charges and refunds to prevent undue and unnecessary inconvenience to airline passengers and travellers.”

Authors of the resolution represent constituents from various congressional districts and partylist organizations.

They noted that while the “budget fare” promos have “encouraged domestic and foreign travels,” many travellers have complained of the airline policies on “flight delays/cancellations and related fees/charges/refunds among others” simply because they failed to read the “fine print provisions” in their tickets or that these were not clearly explained to them when they bought the tickets.

“It seems everyone has their own horror stories to tell relative to their nightmarish experiences with airlines companies,” Jalosjos said as he recounted the experience of two constituents who bought a P5,600 promo fare for a Zamboanga-Manila-Zamboanga trip for two persons but ended up spending P12,000 in penalties on the way back to Zamboanga after arriving 10 minutes late before the check-in counter of local airline company.

Aside from the allegedly exorbitant penalties on late, no-show passengers and those who re-book their flights, other complaints involve no-refund policies 24 hours before the flight; as much as five months delay in the release of refunds.

They also assailed local airlines for unannounced change of destinations; poor customer service in check-in counters, on-line and through telephone; flight delays without timely announcements; and no comfort given in terms of food or hotels to passengers who suffer long flight delays.

MANILA, Philippines - Philippine Airlines (PAL) has brought back its "Fly-all-you-can" promo for Asia, while rival Cebu Pacific launched a seat sale to all destinations.

PAL fares for flights between local hubs Manila, Cebu and Davao and the key cities in the region are down to $270 for economy class, and $1,070 for business class.

Destinations covered by the promo are Bangkok, Beijing, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Macau, Saigon, Shanghai, Singapore and Taipei. Plane tickets are up for grabs starting Friday, July 29, until August 7, for travel from August 15 to November 30.

Cebu Pacific, meanwhile, is offering 500,000 seats at 50% discount to all international and local points from July 30 to August 1 or until seats last. This is for travel from September 1 to December 14.

Cebu Pacific flies to 16 international and 34 domestic destinations.

The Philippines’ largest national flag carrier, Cebu Pacific (PSE:CEB) ranked fifth most profitable leading value airline in the world, according to the July 2011 issue of Air Transport World (ATW).

ATW’s World Airline Report special feature cited CEB as 5th in net profit and 8th in operating profit in a list of international low-cost carriers including USA’s Southwest Airlines and Europe’s Ryanair. They based the financial rankings on data for the most recent fiscal year.

A monthly magazine, ATW has been covering global airline and commercial air transport manufacturing for nearly 48 years.

“This is quite an achievement since it shows CEB’s financial management and sustainability as a business. Since 1996, CEB has been offering the lowest fares in all its destinations, and it will continue to do so for the benefit of the traveling public,” said CEB VP for Marketing and Distribution Candice Iyog.

“Because of every Juan’s continued support, we give back to our passengers with an all-domestic P99 seat sale,” she added.

The seat sale is on July 22, 2011 only or until seats last, for travel from October 1 to November 30, 2011.

Passengers can buy P99 seats to Bacolod, Boracay (Caticlan), Busuanga (Coron), Butuan, Calbayog, Cagayan de Oro, Catarman, Cauayan (Isabela), Cebu, Clark, Cotabato, Davao, Dipolog, Dumaguete, General Santos, Iloilo, Kalibo, Legazpi, Laoag, Manila, Naga, Ozamiz, Pagadian, Puerto Princesa, Roxas, San Jose (Mindoro), Siargao, Surigao, Tacloban, Tagbilaran, Tawi-Tawi, Tuguegarao, Virac and Zamboanga.

It used to be all so simple. Back in the days when the peppy stewardess (that's what they called them back then) would pin little plastic pilot wings on you, airfares changed so infrequently that airlines actually printed them on their schedules. You'd call your favorite travel agent to find the best deal, pack your bags, and jet off. And there were only two kinds of fares: coach and first class.

Hunting down the best deal requires patience and perseverance, but by gaining industry insights and utilizing a broad array of travel resources, flying costs can be kept to a minimum.

Now, with airfares changing literally by the second and an alphabet soup of different offers, finding the "best" deal is a challenge. And it hasn't helped that some airlines have removed their fares from your favorite travel websites. But don't give up hope. This step-by-step guide will get you ready for takeoff this summer.
Sign up for free airfare alerts
Why do all the work hunting down a low airfare yourself when you can have someone else do it for free? Many airfare search and listing sites, such as TripAdvisor.com/flights, Travelocity.com, Farecompare.com, Hotwire.com, and Bing.com/travel (and, of course, Airfarewatchdog.com) offer e-mailed airfare alerts when prices go down. This is just a partial list; do a browser search for "airfare alerts" to see what's available. These alert services all work in slightly different ways. Some will let you specify airline, nonstop vs. connecting flights, and other criteria. Yapta.com will let you choose a specific flight to track (although that flight may or may not be the best deal compared to other flights). Others just let you know when a fare on a route you specify has gone down in price, regardless of the airline or flight time.

Get e-mail from your airlines
Next: Sign up for e-mails and frequent flier programs from as many airlines as you can tolerate. Sure, you already get enough e-mail, but you want to fly cheaply, right? Here's why: Airlines are trying to woo customers to book directly with them by offering special deals when you sign up for their newsletters and e-mail lists. One way they do this is by offering "promo code" deals that are redeemable only on their websites. It might be 10% off, or $10 off, or even a half-price sale. They also alert you to special deals that can only be booked on their sites or that are only available to members of their loyalty programs.
Once that's done, let the search begin.
Next step: ask yourself, Are you a flexible flier?
If you answer yes you're in luck, because you'll get the lowest airfares.
Let's say you've been promising your sister you'd visit her sometime this year. But whenever you search for a good airfare, the prices are out of reach. If it doesn't really matter when you go, then you need to search on a website that caters to those with flexible travel dates. Start by clicking over to Travelocity.com, Orbitz.com, Hotwire.com or Cheaptickets.com (all of which are "online travel agencies or OTA's in industry parlance), and check the "flexible dates" button or link. On Travelocity, enter your origin and destination and hit search. You'll see the lowest published fares for travel dates up to 330 days into the future. You'll then need to click on the fare calendars to see when those fares are actually available. Orbitz, Hotwire and Cheaptickets do a flexible date search over any 30-day period you choose. Keep in mind that American Airlines is not currently listed on some sites (notably Expedia, Orbitz, and Hotwire) and of this writing Delta isn't appearing on CheapAir.com or Farecompare.com, although those exclusions are subject to change at any time. After you find a fare, see if Southwest, which only lists its fares on its Southwest.com website, has a better deal (remember that Southwest doesn't charge for the first two checked bags, so you need to factor that in as well as the fare). Southwest, too, has an excellent flexible date tool (look for "Low Fare Calendar" on the site's homepage). And check out AllegiantAir.com to see if Allegiant Airlines flies where you're headed, since it, too, only sells tickets on its own website.
What if you're not flexible in your travel dates? The above-mentioned sites can be helpful in that case as well, but you also might want to try sites such as Kayak.com, Tripadvisor.com/Flights, and Momondo.com. These are "meta search" fare sites, and although they don't offer quite the travel date flexibility as some others do, they often include fares that the airlines sell only on their own websites. None of them include Southwest's fares, however, or fares on the smaller but growing Allegiant Airlines.
DIGITAL TRAVELER: New player shakes up online airfare search
"Meta search" vs. online travel agency (OTA)
So what's the difference? For one thing, online travel agencies have toll-free numbers with agents standing by to help you book or re-book a flight; meta-search sites don't. A meta-search might send you directly to an airline to book your flight, or if the best deal is on a combination of airlines (say, going out on US Airways and coming back on United), they'll send you to an OTA to book. OTA's keep you on their own websites to book travel, and don't always have fares that the airlines are keeping for themselves, but they do show you the widest range of schedules and fares, and sometimes have lower fares than even the meta-search sites do (recent example: American Airlines had business class fares to Europe for peak summer travel at prices lower than economy class for the same dates; Travelocity had these deals, Kayak didn't). Plus, they offer air plus hotel packages that can sometimes save you serious cash.
Airline websites sometimes have the best fares
Next stop: your airline's website. Increasingly, airlines aren't sharing their very best fares with third-party sites such as Orbitz and Kayak. Case in point: recent fares to London from the West Coast for $420 round-trip including tax that were only available on Spanish airline Iberia's website (similar fares were twice that elsewhere). So once you've found a fare, definitely check airline sites directly rather than assuming your favorite third-party site will have all the best deals.
Watch out for promo codes
See those little promo code boxes on your favorite airline's website? What's that all about? From time to time, you'll receive promo codes in your e-mail because you signed up for e-mail from your favorite airlines and online travel agencies. These codes can only be redeemed if you book directly on the airlines' websites, another way they try to build consumer loyalty and cut out the middleman.
When to use your miles
After you've found what you think is a good airfare, ask yourself if it's worth spending some frequent flier miles instead. There are smart ways to spend your miles and less smart ones. Rather than cashing in 25,000 or even 50,000 miles for a domestic economy class ticket that might have cost you $250 or $300, why not splurge for a trip to Europe (50,000 miles on some airlines) that might cost two or three times more; or upgrade your $400 economy class seat to a $2,800 business class fare for 30,000 miles on domestic routes? A general rule: if the economy class fare is $400 or more, spending 25,000 miles is a good deal. Less than that, you might be better offering paying cash and saving your miles.
DEALS: How to choose the 'best' frequent flier program
Check Southwest Airlines separately
If Southwest flies where you're going, you'll have to surf over to Southwest.com to see their fares. Another smaller, but growing, carrier that sells only directly to consumers is Allegiant Airlines (allegiantair.com).
Getting the best last-minute airfares
You'll often get the best fares if you book at least 7 to 21 days ahead of departure. But what if you don't have that luxury? Other than the airlines' last-minute weekend fares, which you can find on their sites, your best bet is Priceline.com's "Name your own price" feature or Hotwire.com. Also take a look at Lastminute.com which packages last minute airfares with hotel and rental car deals. Amazingly, the cost of these packages is often less than what you'd pay for airfare alone.
When to use a real live travel agent
There is another way to find a low airfare, and it's one your mother probably used. Pick up the phone and call a local travel agent, the kind with a real storefront. As good as do-it-yourself online sources can be, your friendly neighborhood travel agent may have some tricks up her sleeve to save you money. Let's say, for example, that you get an airfare alert that fares from Houston to Honolulu are $800 round-trip. But who knew that the same trip, same dates from Dallas is $300. Or that you can fly from Houston to Dallas for $100 and connect onward? Travel agents also sell "consolidator" airfares, which are heavily discounted deals (mostly on international flights). These fares come with more restrictions, but can save you money. And they can also find you amazing package deals. "Bricks and mortar" travel agents often charge for their services, but the savings can be tremendous.
Getting a refund when the fare drops after you buy
Several domestic U.S. airlines will give you a full refund, in the form of a voucher good for future travel, if the airfare drops between the time you buy and time you fly—if and only if you fly on the same itinerary. Those airlines are Alaska, Jetblue and Southwest. Some other airlines issue vouchers, but deduct a ticket re-issue fee (up to $150 on domestic fares, or $250 or more on international ones). A good place to track price drops: Yapta.com, which works with some but not all airlines (notably missing: Southwest).
Watch out for fees
Once you've found your fare, your job isn't quite done. A low fare on one airline could turn out to be not so low once fees are added on. Airlines are making most of their profits these days not from selling you airfares but with all those fees for baggage, premium seats, and other perks. The fee for an "overweight, over-sized" checked bag to some international destinations on Delta Air Lines can cost (gulp!) $700 round-trip. One airfare website that tries to forewarn passengers about fees when they search is TripAdvisor.com/flights. Do a web search for "airline baggage fee chart" or "airline fees" to be forewarned of what you might pay. And don't trust airport baggage scales. Weigh your bags at home before leaving for the airport, and bring a portable digital electronic bag scale to make sure you're not being overcharged. Southwest is currently the only airline that doesn't charge for the first and second checked bags (within weight and size limits), and also doesn't charge a fee if you wish to change your travel dates.
AIRLINE FEES: Know before you go what aspects will cost you
Best days to travel
Although a low airfare can pop up at any minute of the week, one thing's for certain: it's cheaper to fly on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Saturday is also a low-fare day. If traveling internationally, Monday to Wednesday is often the sweet spot.
Is there a "magic" hour or day to buy?
It's true that the airlines' weekend deals come out Monday to Wednesday, and some airlines announce their sales early in the week, but if you limit yourself to searching just on those days, you'll miss out. A good fare can pop up literally any moment of the week. And if you search one minute or one day and the fare is way too high, don't despair. Come back an hour or two or a day or two later and search again. Not only do airfares change with the wind, but the number of seats offered at the lowest fares changes as well, based on supply and demand.
Airfare predictions
Speaking of "when to buy," Bing.com/travel purports to offer accurate airfare predictions, indicating whether the site thinks a fare will go up or down, and it's certainly worth a try, but it's not always accurate. To see if an airfare is currently on the high or low side, do a web search for "historic airfares" to see airfare trends over time on a particular route. Two useful sites: Farereport.com and Kayak.com/trends

Tiger Airways and South East Asian Airlines (SEAIR) are expanding their “Partner Airline” programme with new daily flights between Manila Clark and Hong Kong scheduled to start on 14 March 2011.

Just like SEAIR’s existing twice-daily flights between Clark and Singapore, the new route will offer special fares to tourists, business travellers and Filipinos working abroad on the important link between the Philippines and China.

SEAIR and Tiger Airways launched their Partner Airline programme in November 2010, with flights on the Manila Clark-Singapore route. A few weeks later on 17 December 2010, the inaugural SEAIR flight took off with a full load of passengers.

MANILA, Philippines - National flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) has increased flights by deploying all available aircraft and posting full staff complement at airports to accommodate the surge of holiday travelers.

For this year’s peak season, PAL has added flights to five international destinations (Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Riyadh and Singapore) and seven domestic destinations (Zamboanga, Ozamis, Puerto Princesa, Iloilo, Dipolog, Bacolod and Cagayan de Oro).

Five selected flights going to Guam are also using a bigger aircraft (Airbus A330), the same with the mid-morning flight from Manila to Davao, using the Boeing 747-400.

Details of changes in schedule and aircraft may be viewed at the PAL website www.philippineairlines.com.

On the ground, PAL’s frontline offices (check-in counters, baggage handling, cargo sales, ticket offices and other customer-contact work places) in Manila and in all domestic and international stations will have maximum manpower complement to serve the needs of travelers.

PAL has also beefed up its security measures during the holidays including the deployment of more guards and bomb-sniffing K-9 unit at various locations of the NAIA Terminal 2.

PAL has been regularly coordinating with the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) and heads of airport authorities in the provinces to address peak season concerns.

Special low-fare, limited-seat promos were recently made available to bargain-hunters, such as discounted tickets to Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Francisco exclusively on sale at the PAL website, and the 4-day Hong Kong package for travel between Dec. 23 and 31, 2010.

Other recent promos include the Payday Special, the Grand Seat Raffle draw for December, the Midnight Special every Saturday and a month-long Manuel Baldemor painting auction for the benefit of sick children.

PAL is again advising its passengers to get to the airport early to avoid missing their flights, considering the heavy traffic around NAIA. Airfare savings: 11 ways to find the best ticket prices

Take a look at these important tips so we could get the best deals on airfares:

Fares on many routes are much more expensive this holiday season than last, but airfares are not static and there are (relative) deals to be had any time of year. Here is Airfarewatchdog.com's best advice for making your airfare dollars go farther no matter what the time of year.

1. Sign up for airlines' e-mail feeds and frequent-flyer programs.

We know, you already get too much e-mail, but the airlines want to develop a relationship with you, so they'll send you special deals, such as 50 percent off promo codes or two-fers, if you sign up. Airline sites sell much more than airfares these days (hotels, rental cars, credit cards and such), and they will entice you to deal direct rather than use a third-party site such as Orbitz. If you're on Twitter, you might also want to follow the airlines' tweets, which they're using to promote exclusive Twitter-only deals. We signed up for Virgin America's frequent-flyer program and because we haven't flown them yet we keep on getting promo code discount offers to give them a try.

2. Sign up for third-party fare alerts.

Many airfare websites offer alerts, and they all have something to offer. Yapta.com lets you track your specific itinerary, down to the flight number and dates of travel, and will let you know if the airline owes you a price-drop refund. Travelocity's easy-to-use FareWatcherPlus lets you track up to 10 routes and you can choose to be notified either when a fare goes down by $25 or more, or when it goes below a price you choose. Orbitz also offers alerts, as does Bing Travel, TripAdivsor.com/flights and FareCompare.com.

One thing to note: These sites use essentially the same airfare data provided by the airlines' computer systems or ITA Software, so they won't include discounted promo-code fares, and most don't include Southwest Airlines. Airfarewatchdog.com includes hand-picked fares on Southwest and Allegiant Airlines.

3. Search airline sites individually, but not exclusively.

As noted above, many airlines reserve their best fares for their own sites. These are different from promo-code fares. International airlines such as Aer Lingus, Iberia and Qantas regularly offer lower fares ($100-$400 less) on their websites compared to what you'll find on Kayak or Orbitz. But don't ignore online travel agencies such as Expedia and Travelocity, because these sites will tell you if it's cheaper flying out on one airline and back on another.

4. Buy hotel plus air packages.

It's often significantly cheaper to buy an air plus hotel package rather than airfare alone, especially for last-minute travel. We often see Travelocity "TotalTrip" offerings, especially on last-minute flights, pop up with hotel plus air for half the price of air alone. Lastminute.com is also a great source for finding last minute packages.

5. Use Priceline for last-minute trips.

If you don't have a 7-, 14- or 21-day advance-purchase window to buy your fare, your best bet is the "name your own price" feature of Priceline.com. You won't know the exact flight times or airline until you pay, but you can save 50 percent or more. Hotwire.com can also be useful for last minute trips.

6. Use consolidators, but beware of the restrictions.

Consolidators specializing in premium cabins on airplanes often have great deals, and the airlines themselves will be heavily discounting their premium cabins, so check the specials on their web sites. Sites like Vayama.com, airfare.com and Asia.com also sometimes sell consolidator fares. Google "airfarewatchdog consolidator fares" to find more information online.

7. Use a flexible date search.

Would you fly in a different month, or a day or two earlier or later, to save hundreds of bucks? If so, learn how to use the flexible travel-date search feature on airline and third-party sites.

8. Consider extra fees before you buy.

If Southwest has a fare of $198 round-trip and United has $148, and you are checking three bags, then Southwest has the lower fare because Southwest charges nothing for the first two checked bags, whereas United would charge you an additional $165 each way for three.

9. Combine two separate fares rather than buying one fare.

If you're flying to Europe, you might save by purchasing one fare from the U.S. to, say, Dublin, and another from Dublin on low-cost Ryanair.com to your next destination. (Just beware of Ryanair's abundant fees.) Same holds true for some destinations in Asia (fly into Singapore and catch low-cost Airasia.com from there) and to some smaller Caribbean destinations via San Juan or the Bahamas.

10. Buy tickets on an airline that will refund the difference if a fare goes down.

If you buy a non-refundable ticket one day and the price drops the next, you can ask for a refund for the difference. Most airlines charge an "administrative" fee of $150 or more, wiping out any savings. Some airlines give you the entire fare difference without a fee. The "nice" airlines are JetBlue, Southwest and Alaska.

11. Check fares several times a day, and don't listen to pundits who predict airfares.

A lot of people say they know where airfares are headed. But airlines are unpredictable, and any expert who claims he or she knows that airfares will be lower or higher in the coming months is suspect. Fares fluctuate throughout the day, and the number of seats offered at the lowest fares also changes frequently. So if you don't like the fare at 10 a.m., check at 2 p.m. or the next day and you may be surprised.
