For California natives like Thirty Seconds To Mars, KROQ’s Weenie Roast — even more so than Memorial Day — marks the unofficial start of the summer season. So it’s a real honor for the guys to return to Weenie Roast six years after they made their debut in 2007, this time as the night’s headliners alongside the Black Keys and Vampire Weekend.

Jared Leto remembers going to the show when him and his brother (and bandmate) Shannon were just kids. “It’s a real treat to be back,” Leto told Radio.com in our new video interview.

Weenie Roast will also be the first big show the band has played in a year and a half. “It’s going to be interesting,” Jared said with a laugh. “It’s going to be much different than the Church of Mars.”

For the last month, the guys have been playing shows in churches across the United States, making stops in cities like Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago and New York. Each show only fits about 200 to 800 people, but for the band it’s been a way to say thank you to some of their biggest fans.

With the release of their fourth album, LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS (out May 21), the band looks forward to showing off their new music in a festival setting, especially the record’s lead single, “Up In The Air,” which has been a hit with the Church of Mars crowd.

“Everyone has a great time on this small scale so I can’t imagine what it’s going to be like on the big scale,” Shannon said.

Not that the guys are concerned about playing to a big crowd. They currently hold the Guinness World Record for the most shows played in a single tour. Jared said that the many, many shows they played actually helped in the making of their latest album, calling it “an evolution” for the band.

“We learned a lot playing hundred and hundreds of shows,” Jared said. “It really means that we had a lot of practice. So we applied that. We’ve grown up a lot.”

They connected each song to their four-word title and made a cohesive album in the day and age of the single. “I think that connectivity tissue helps to provide a little more cohesive, a little less disjointed feeling to the album,” he said.

Jared believes fans will be impressed with the album and even more so, he thinks they’ll gain a few new followers that wrote off the band years ago.

“I think some people are going to feel like it’s OK to like Thirty Seconds To Mars,” Leto said with a chuckle. “And that’s kind of fun.”

JARED Leto is a freak. The Thirty Seconds To Mars frontman is one of those rare humans who remembers everyone and everything.

And he meets thousands of people.

On a visit to Australia to present tracks from the band's Love Lust Faith and Dreams, he inquired about someone's child whose birth was due during his last tour here. He noticed my haircut.

While he was internationally famous as an actor, Leto had to start from scratch as a musician and the band has endured a turbulent trajectory to command the charts and the world's stages.

It appears to be the frontman's laser focus and attention to every detail from their social-media strategy to the videos - to charming media at listening sessions - that have now made them the kind of band whose new album release is regarded as an entertainment event.

After 15 years of trying to prove he wasn't just another actor trying to sing, Leto is a rock star.

He credits their Guinness World Record for the Longest Concert Tour by a Rock Band - playing 311 concert shows in two years and four months - for finally affording him the confidence that this music caper was now his day job.

Love Lust Faith and Dreams is the sound of that confidence. Yet match fitness doesn't necessarily lead to great songs. Ask any writer who has thrown out their life-on-the-road ode.

"As an artist, I am filled with as much doubt as I am confidence and I have doubt all the time, I fail all the time.

"I wrote 70 songs for this album and only 12 were good enough to put on it," he says.

It is unsurprising considering his love of movie scores that the new record is big. We are talking ambitious in terms of soaring orchestral arrangements and bombastic intros that would usually herald the arrival of a large army of baddies were it to soundtrack a feature film.

Leto references everything from The Last Temptation Of Christ score to the analogue synthesisers used by everyone from Pink Floyd to Giorgio Moroder as responsible for generating his creative DNA.

"There is a return to that musical language which affected me so emotionally when I was a kid. It's your creative DNA but I'm not a fan of referential music," he says. "Usually the bands that did it first did it better, but I do think there's something interesting about putting one foot in the past and the other into the future."

One of his boots seems to be planted firmly on U2's stage. The ghost of the gods of stadium rock seems to hover over a few of Love Lust Faith and Dreams songs or maybe you hear their echo because one of their studio family, Steve Lillywhite, produced four of the album's tracks. So is this album a throwdown to claim the Irish supergroup's throne? Thirty Seconds To Mars may be worthy contenders when you look at just how many people they played in front of during that record-breaking world tour.

"I don't think so," Leto says, laughing. "They are the band to beat for emotional connectivity and size and grandeur. And also the band you have to give it up to that has stayed relevant the longest. There's songs like Vertigo and Beautiful Day, which have connected just as powerfully as the songs from the earlier part of their career. But I think we killed our influences for this album. When I hear these songs, I hear us."

At its heart, Love Lust Faith and Dreams is a concept record. Once Leto realised that, it made its construction a much easier proposition.

"This album works in that way where every song can be attributed to one or more of those themes. Every song mentions one of those words at least once. So there's a lot of connective tissue," he says.

Leto's desire to dream big led to the band launching the album's first single Up In the Air via the International Space Station.

He also directed the song's video, and like his previous music clips and documentaries, he is credited by the alias Bartholomew Cubbins. "It started a long time ago because I got so much s--- for being in a band.

"I remember when the label had dropped us and gave us one more chance based on a gig they saw us do so they would release the song The Kill," Leto explains.

"After watching a rough cut, I was in a cold sweat, my heart was pounding because it was so bad that I thought I had ruined any last chance we had of a career. I kid you not. That panic put me into action and I wrestled the footage into something - it was a homage to The Shining and it ended up changing our lives."

And so he kept the directorial alter-ego whose personality has become infamous among Thirty Seconds To Mars fans.

"I've just kept the name and I always describe him as a person with albinism who lives in Denmark and is constantly in and out of rehab and a total a------," Leto says.

"I have a Twitter account for him. People line up to get abused by him."

Thirty Seconds To Mars' 'New Beginning' Starts With LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS

Mars' new album is less than a week away, and Jared Leto can't wait to tell Buzz Aldrin about it.

Thirty Seconds To Mars are less than a week away from the release of their LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS album, but at the moment, they have more important things on their minds.

"I'm talking to Buzz-F---ing-Aldrin right now!" Jared Leto exclaimed, furiously texting away on his phone. "He came to our 'Church of Mars' show in DC — one of the free shows we're doing around the country — and it was, needless to say, amazing to meet him."

"We got to meet him the other day in DC and it was so cool to have that dude in the room," Tomo Milicevic added. "Plus, we have one of the most amazing Vines ever with him, where he's doing the 'Best Time Ever' face."

In case you were wondering, here is what doing the "Best Time Ever" face with the second guy to ever walk on the moon looks like. Of course, Mars are pretty used to rubbing elbows with astronauts these days; back in March, they launched the first copy of their single "Up In The Air" into orbit on board a SpaceX rocket, then conducted a live Q&A with one of the astronauts living on the International Space Station.

In short, they've literally gone out of their way (like, thousands of miles above the planet) to promote their new record, so while chatting with Buzz Aldrin is nice and all, Mars also realized it was time to get down to business: LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS is due to be released on May 21, and needless to say, after a lengthy break (that kinda, maybe almost became a hiatus of sorts), they're ready to hit the road hard, and push the band to new heights.

Yes, even higher than outer space.

"I think people are really going to respond well to the record; we worked on it incredibly hard. If you're a fan of Thirty Seconds To Mars, or you loved 'The Kill' or 'Kings and Queens' or 'Closer to the Edge' or This is War, I think you're going to love this record," Leto said. "You're going to come on a journey with us; it's an evolution in some ways, but not so much as it is a new beginning ... we've thrown away a lot of the past, we've moved on, and it's exciting. I think a lot of people are probably ready for that."

The brand new album by Thirty Seconds To Mars, LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS is set for release on May 21. This new album was written and recorded around the world from Europe, to India, to the band’s studio in California, the new album was produced by Jared Leto with previous collaborator Steve Lillywhite (U2, The Rolling Stones, Peter Gabriel) co-producing four of the twelve tracks. The first copy of lead single “Up In The Air” was recently carried aboard the SpaceX cargo mission to the International Space Station. After the astronauts gave the single its groundbreaking premiere in space, it debuted on radio stations worldwide. The song is already a Top 5 hit at Modern Rock radio and is also climbing at the Active Rock format.

On May 14, Thirty Seconds To Mars brought their Church Of Mars headlining tour to St. Peter’s Church in Chelsea, NYC where they performed a mixture of electric and acoustic songs and previewed material off their forthcoming album. Jared Leto On Thirty Seconds To Mars' 'New Chapter,' 'LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS' And His Return To Film

While you weren't paying attention, Jared Leto was touring the world and playing rock and roll for hundreds of thousands of rabid fans. Except he doesn't like the word "fan," because he finds it insulting. Thirty Seconds to Mars, the band Leto fronts, doesn't have "fans," they have a "family."

"We do a lot of interviews and all these people keep asking us about you," Leto said to the crowd at the New York stop of the Church of Mars show, an aptly titled string of dates during which the band plays in churches. "It's great because I think a lot of bands don't get asked about their ... 'fans'. People sort of scratch their heads and don't really seem to get it. Which is funny, because I think all of you understand what a family is."

To say Thirty Seconds to Mars has been overlooked isn't quite true given the sheer size and devotion of its fanbase and as well as the band's sales record (the group has sold well over 10 million units). Leto, who has been a celebrity since he appeared on "My So-Called Life" in the mid-'90s and starred in a number of critically acclaimed movies ("Requiem for a Dream," "Panic Room," "American Psycho") while also cultivating a healthy music career. But the man who has been voted on plenty of "Most Beautiful" lists never became a music snob's favorite artist, and as a result, the band has been ignored by the press -- and the music press in particular.

Whether it's Leto's background as an actor or the band's impressively commercial style, they've never been critically appreciated. The only Pitchfork articles ever written on the band are about Leto's collaboration with Kanye West (for "Hurricane," an experience Leto described thusly: "He's very spontaneous and he doesn't really second guess himself"), and Thirty Seconds To Mars' involvement with Guitar Hero, a video game.

Not that Leto minds. "How many people do you need to love you in this world?" he asked during an interview by the fireplace in the suitably dark Bowery Hotel in New York. "You do your thing, and it's OK. I don't think we've reached a nostalgia era yet and I don't think we had that explosive part of our career in a pop way where we would have been a Rolling Stone darling. We may never be anyone's darlings."

There was a moment, however, during which they were quite popular with the press. Leto and his bandmates were sued for breach of contract for $30 million by EMI in 2008, an experience that left them understandably rattled. "It was an intense period of life," he said. "It wasn't just a headline. It was very real. We could have battled and lost and then owed a corporation $30 million and seen our careers just implode."

"I actually felt the most supported by the press in that battle than I'd ever felt in my life, and that was great," he continued. "I felt like, 'OK, we are doing the right thing.' People really rallied around us and I'm thankful for that."

All it took, essentially, for people to see Leto and his band as musicians, was a $30 million noose in the form of a corporation. This is all somewhat confusing, because Leto is a downtown New York kind of man. He's a close friend of photographer Terry Richardson with well-documented interests in art and fashion. He's often spotted at the type of parties that folks with regular jobs and lifestyles don't know are happening. But Thirty Seconds to Mars is the opposite of all of that. It is readily accessible (Leto even says the band was never associated with any movement or genre in music, nothing that "we never really belonged to a scene or group or movement"), and its fans, if unified by any single trait, are precisely the type of folks who could never get into the soirees Leto enjoys, even if they showed up and used his name at the door.

That he can so convincingly play their patron saint -- "Church of Mars," anyone? -- speaks to his chameleon-like ability to make anyone feel important. He's exceedingly polite, speaking at a cautious rate and often waiting five seconds or more before sentences. When we conclude our interview, he invites me to the show and directs me to "find" him and say hello, even though it's abundantly clear to both of us that that will prove to be a logistical impossibility (exacerbated by the fact that the band showed up well over an hour late for their performance).

But he gives it his all, and it works because he's actually just a really nice guy. During the performance, Leto joked with the crowd, lurched up and down the aisle of the church, grabbed shoulders of screaming attendees and at least pretended to ask what they wanted to hear. He's a man of two worlds: a rock star to young-ish crowds of everymen and a high-brow, mysterious art movie star.

There are some strands of Leto's personal image in band's output. For example, the cover art for "LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS" was designed by Damien Hirst, who somehow found some more dots in his arsenal. Leto is involved with every step of the album's creation and production. "That's very important to me," he said. "Whether it's working with Damien Hirst or going to space or inviting the U.S. gymnastics team to be a part of the video [for "Up in the Air"], I've been very involved with that. All of it comes from a place of curiosity and fun. I never think about it in terms of marketing. I think about what's exciting."

A "loud, bombastic rock record" wasn't exciting to Leto anymore, which is why "LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS" is "very cinematic and atmospheric" and focuses on "that collision between orchestral and synthetic -- analog synthesizers with strings, electronic drums with big, driving, organic drums." Recorded in Berlin, Tokyo, Paris and multiple cities in India, the project is global -- at least in its ambitions. Leto refers to it as "a listening experience" and notes that the reason they've been so successful is because, given the absence of breakout singles and pop moments, they've often focused on albums.

"When we went on tour and started selling 20,000 tickets a night, that's when it hits you smack in the fucking face," he said. "You can't deny it. You know you're reaching people when they come to see you, night after night after night. That's when it's just astounding -- and they're singing the songs. Every song."

Music aside, Leto returns to film this year with "Dallas Buyers Club," a Jean-Marc Vallée movie in which Leto stars across Matthew McConaughey and Jennier Garner. His jump back onto the big screen comes after half a decade without a single major acting credit to his name. "I really only need to participate in projects that inspire me," Leto explains. "Life is too short, you should only do what you're very passionate about. I fell in love with the script and the opportunity. I wasn't looking to make a film, I don't know how much time would have passed if this hadn't come my way. Maybe 10 years."

Leto lost a drastic amount of weight for the role and still cuts an extremely slight side profile. "Nobody asked me to lose any weight," he said. "But I was playing a transsexual woman with AIDS who was also a drug addict, so it seemed like an important part of the process. When you're in that place -- where I have been before with 'Requiem [for a Dream]' -- you're constantly craving. It changes the way you talk, the way you walk and the way you breathe. It changes everything about you. I was so focused, I didn't have relationships with anybody. Except my high heels."

Since his child star days, Leto has worked with some of the most important art-film directors of the past half-century (David Fincher, Terrence Malick and Darren Aronofsky). His movie career, like his personal life, stands in stark contrast to his musical output. But you can bet that as the band tours the world again starting Monday, Jared Leto will be there, playing rock-God to all the kids who can't get into his parties.

The fans, who call themselves the Echelon, have planted trees in Haiti, funded a well to provide clean drinking water to those in need, and built houses in the band’s name. To show his phans (fans + philanthropists) his gratitude, Jared Leto gave them a free concert in Union Square!

If Leto tweets it, they will come. And that’s exactly what happened when Leto tweeted that he was grabbing his guitar and heading to Union Square in New York City. He told his followers that he was putting on an impromptu concert just for them! DAVID SWAN talks Kurt Cobain, Guinness World Records and poses some curly hypotheticals to 30 Second To Mars frontman (and sometime actor) Jared Leto.

It’s always going to be weird meeting a person you’re accustomed to seeing in movies face-to-face, especially one who dies in basically every film he’s in.

The last time I talked to Jared Leto was over the phone, but in person he cuts an intimidating figure: tall and handsome, with intense eyes. Back in 2010 it was hard to get a serious word out of him, with talk of chickens and orgies dominating our conversation. But things have changed. These days, there’s less small talk and more conversation about the essence of making art, and the intricacies and pitfalls of being in a band. It’s clear he’s playing for keeps.

The charismatic singer/songwriter/actor/activist spoke with FL while in Australia promoting 30 Seconds to Mars’ new album, Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams.

We last spoke about two-and-a-half years ago. How have you changed since then?
The hair’s a little different, but I’m still working my ass off and I’m happy to be doing it. It’s a pretty magical thing to be able to do – make things and share those things with people around the world and have these experiences that we have. So I’m feeling pretty excited and really grateful.

You mention on Twitter recently that you were quitting wheat, sugar and masturbation, were you joking?
That was an April Fool’s joke [laughs].

Let’s talk about the new album. From the sound it, it’s even more epic than what you’ve done previously, but why should fans get excited about it?
I think it’s … not so much an evolution as much as a brand new beginning. I mean it’s 30 Seconds to Mars, and something magical happened on this record … something really unique. You know, your creativity is like a fingerprint, it’s hard to get away from it. You are who you are, your DNA is in what you do, but if you challenge yourself and push yourself hard enough you can break new ground. And I think that we’ve done that for ourselves with this album. I think that we’ve pushed to an entirely new place, and that’s exciting.

Is there a point where you feel like you can’t get any more “epic”. Will you have to strip it back for the next album?
I don’t think you always have to go bigger. You can be more intimate, you could be more atmospheric, you could do a left turn. And I think all those things are appropriate. Rather than get more grandiose you could get more immediate, you could break things down. So it’s not always about being more epic. And you need the simplicity; you need the silence in order to hear the note. I think we as songwriters forget that a lot: Silence is sometimes the strongest and loudest choice that you can make.

You have made a film about being sued by your label for $30 million for breach of contract. I know last time we talked it seemed like a painful thing to be going through so why make the documentary – was it catharsis?
I think so. I feel like it was a story I needed to tell. I think a lot of people watch it and realise things about the industry that they didn’t know. And a lot of young artists could get a lot from watching the film, I hope. So it was important for us. We battled the record company who sued us for $30 million, we filmed the entire thing and it’s a making of This Is War as well.

Why stay in the label system then?
I’m not anti-label. A label is really just a bunch of people around the world helping to bring your vision to life, right? At its best that is. At its worst all kinds of problems that are endemic of corporate culture, or the corporate system, come into play. So there a lot of really great things about having a team of people around the world, if I didn’t have a record label I’d have to put one together myself. So I’m not anti-label at all, I like the fact there are groups of people around the world who can make a living and are all helping each other to achieve goals, I think that’s wonderful, but I’m just anti-greed.

And you now hold the Guinness world record for longest concert tour by a band, playing over 300 shows. Why choose to do that as opposed to a “normal” tour, and were there any side effects from playing so many shows?
Good question! We didn’t set out to break the record, it just happened. We didn’t plan on it at all. It was towards the end of the tour, and bands and people we knew kept asking, “God, how long have you toured, this is crazy?!” And most of the time we just blew it off and didn’t think about it. But toward the end we started to see bands put out two albums and be on their second tour when we were still on the first – and we did realise it was an incredibly long time. So we looked into it and sure enough we had toured longer than any other band before. So we became Guinness World Record holders without meaning to, really. It just happened that way.

I saw the band when you were last here at [Soundwave] festival, and during that tour you had a tendency to bring up hundreds of fans onstage at a time. Will you still do that or move onto something else?
I think we’ll always do something different but I love to bring people up onstage, and I like to break down that wall. I try to do that the whole show. Basically, I just want to be in the audience, and I want the audience to be onstage. Honestly, that’s what I want to happen. I want people to feel that way, too. So I do my best to deliver that night after night. That Soundwave tour was such a great tour for us – we still think about those shows. They were really powerful.

You manage a social media company as well, helping bands and artists communicate with their fans. Is there problem with losing the idea of a “rock star” though, with bands becoming too “real”?
I don’t think so. I don’t think transparency means you give away strength. I don’t think people knowing who you are, or having an idea of who you are, means that you’re any less talented or creative. And I think it’s a sign of the times. You know, there were rock stars back in the day that would’ve loved to tell people what colour their nail polish was, or who they were shagging that night – but they didn’t have a way to do it. So I think that communication is always a good thing. Ultimately it’s a better thing for me than not because you used to have to rely on gatekeepers to tell your story, now you can tell your own story. And I think that people learn a lot about me and I’m glad I’ve been able to share a lot about myself. And I wouldn’t have without social media.

Speaking of sharing you posted a photo of a severed ear you received in the mail. Was that just trolling the fans?
Someone gave me another ear here earlier actually [laughs]. But I’ve been sent a lot of weird things, let me tell you. That is the least weird.

What is the weirdest?
I’ve had all kinds of bizarre and interesting things. I got a shrunken head once. An entire fucking shrunken head. I get sent prosthetic parts too but I generally return those to sender.

What about the Kurt Cobain tribute video you did…
It wasn’t a tribute video.

Then how would you frame it?
I ran into Courtney Love and she asked me to read the book, Heavier Than Heaven [Charles R Cross’ Kurt Cobain biography]. I heard they were making a movie about it so I put myself on tape. I recorded myself to see if I could play the part. Just for myself. And I never did anything with it. I never sent it to the studio, but they were interested. They called me to see if I was interested in playing the part. I put myself on tape just to explore. I happen to have long hair and I’d dyed it blonde, so the whole thing was serendipitous. But it wasn’t a “tribute”. Some website said that, and then of course everyone said that, and I’m still cleaning it up to this day. But it was his [Kurt’s] birthday and I noticed that and I thought, “Oh I’ll just put this on my website and share it with everybody”, because it’s just sitting on a tape somewhere – on a hard drive – and I never did anything with it. So I thought I’d put it up. And it was really that simple.

Other bands of your ilk have been breaking up, My Chemical Romance for example. You’ve taken a couple of years between albums, did you ever think about leaving the band?
I haven’t signed a contract with myself or anybody else to do this forever, but it’s kind of hard to divorce or break up with yourself. Me and my brother [Shannon Leto] are the core of the band, so if it ever stops being fun, interesting, exciting … then we just wouldn’t do it.

And any Australia plans?
Very very very soon. Sooner rather than later.

And arenas, or intimate?
I’d say bigger than smaller, yeah.

As a last little thing I’ve got some hypothetical questions for you. You can win an Oscar for Best Actor or a Grammy for Best Album, which one do you take?
Neither. I don’t really think about those things, honest to god. I never think about it. Awards are great for one reason – they give you a chance to thank all of the people that are important in your life, and your fans, and your audience around the world. That’s really it. We’ve gotten lots of awards, lots of them, and none of those awards have ever made me feel better about myself or have ever made me feel more confident as an artist, a singer, or a songwriter. But really they’ve all given us the opportunity to mark the passage of time, and to say thank you. That’s really what it’s about, it gives you a chance to show your gratitude to the world, and that’s cool.

Here’s another one: You can be the first band to ever play on Mars but you have to re-sign with Virgin and they’ll subsequently slap you with another lawsuit. Do you do it?
Ha. No way in hell. I’d have to let somebody else take the trip. Put them in a capsule and send them away.

Final one: The band breaks up, MTV puts one of your songs on repeat for 24 hours, which song is it?
‘Up in the Air’.
