Jared Leto made a three-word resolution for 2017. ‘Don’t. Waste. Time.’ He raps his fist on the table to emphasise each word. He has been reading a book by the Roman Stoic philosopher Seneca on the ‘shortness of life’, he explains, his turquoise eyes shimmering under the California sun. ‘It’s incredible that this guy lived a couple thousand years ago and you read it and it sounds like someone who’s alive right now. We’re on borrowed time. We only have so much energy. It’s important for me to spend it really wisely.’

If Leto, 45, has been pissing around up to this point, you worry what he might accomplish when he gets serious. He has spent a career diving head first into roles — as teen idol, oblivion-seeking hedonist, method actor, emo frontman, rock-climber, start-up founder, fashion plate — and always landing on his feet.

He won an Oscar for his turn as an HIV-positive transgender woman in The Dallas Buyers Club in 2014. Soon, he’ll add Denis Villeneuve’s long-awaited Blade Runner sequel to a CV that includes Fight Club, American Psycho and Requiem for a Dream. His most acclaimed roles arrived after he disregarded all Hollywood counsel and spent four years touring with Thirty Seconds to Mars, the band that he started with his brother, Shannon, back in 1998. It stands out among actor side-projects in not being embarrassingly crap, selling 15 million records of pleasingly histrionic arena rock and entering the Guinness World Records for performing 300 shows in one tour. He’s currently mixing their fifth album. ‘It’s easy to write four songs a day, the real work is editing it all down,’ he laments.

Leto also serves as chief Instagram muse and confidant to Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele, and managed to pull off a lilac violet dressing gown at its recent cruise collection show. Today he’s in Carrera ski shades (he’s the brand’s 2017 ambassador) and a ripped T-shirt by the cult Parisian label Enfants Riches Déprimés. He was an early investor in Uber, Airbnb, Nest and Reddit, and in 2011 founded the live-streaming service VyRT. He scales 3,000ft cliff faces in Joshua Tree National Park to wind down from this. And even his tomfoolery is next-level — he once sent some anal beads and a dead pig to Margot Robbie and the rest of his Suicide Squad castmates to get in the zone to play The Joker in the twisted superhero film.

You might put his industriousness down to his veganism or his recent disavowal of stimulants. ‘I do not dive lightly into the abyss any more,’ he says. He mostly credits his artist mother, Constance, who raised Leto and his brother with help from her own parents after their father walked out when Leto was a baby (he committed suicide when Leto was eight). His grandfather was in the US Air Force so the family moved around a lot — and Constance later joined various artistic communes. ‘She encouraged me that a creative path is a worthy one. It was really brave of her to do that. The creative path is one that is fraught with imbalance and uncertainty, self-consciousness, fear and doubt.’

It was also as a child that he first read Frederich Nietzsche. ‘The Will to Power is such a fascinating thing,’ he says. ‘I think we’re probably more responsible for the definition of ourselves than most of us would think. Probably. A great deal of the world thinks that… they may not have as much… authority in their own lives as they do.’ He chooses his words with exquisite care. ‘But I have found that we are… very responsible for our stories. Yep.’

Any child of the '90s likely had a crush on Jared Leto (ahem, Mr. Jordan Catalano) and probably still does (I do!). Thankfully Jared is still acting and performing with his band, Thirty Seconds to Mars. And can we talk about the internet's obsessed with his ever-changing hair?!

The renaissance man is also the face of Gucci fragrances, and the campaigns are pretty steamy (see exclusive behind-the-scenes images here!). This Spring, he is fronting the campaign for Gucci Guilty Absolute (an earthy-woody scent). In the ads, photographer Glen Luchford shot Jared starring at his handsome reflection in the mirror. Since that was not enough Jared for us, we also got to interview him via email about his grooming and scent routine . . .

POPSUGAR: What does Jared Leto smell like in three descriptive words?
Jared Leto: I think I like heavier, muskier smells in general. I don't love flowery, powdery smells. I love kind of darker, stronger smells.

PS: What is your favorite scent memory?
JL: I've always had a strong sense of smell and I think smells for me, I remember when I was a kid, that the smell of a fireplace. This is gas, but the smell of a fireplace is always really powerful to me. A campfire, a fireplace, it always brings back memories.

PS: We are obsessed with your hair texture. How do you take care of it?
JL: I take a shower and shampoo and that's it.

PS: What is your guilty pleasure?
JL: Maybe I have a guilty indulgence with art and creativity because as an artist you can be indulgent, and it's important to be, in a way. To spend time thinking about your own creative desires.

PS: What is your skin care routine?
JL: I don't do any beauty routine, in my own personal life. I try to eat as good as I can, and I try to sleep. But for films, I would do whatever it takes. I made a movie in Budapest, Bladerunner, and it was a lot of makeup and big transformation. [For] another movie in Japan I had tattoos everywhere — all over my body, my whole body — it was crazy. Eight hours in makeup.

Italian eyewear brand Carrera said Jared Leto is to front its latest advertising campaign. The Oscar-winning actor previously partnered with the brand for The Maverick project in 2016, which celebrated the 60th anniversary of the label.

Leto has been a supporter of the brand ever since, considering Carrera “always a bit different” and praising the styles’ combination of “strong identity” and a classic, timeless look

Shot by Terry Richardson, the campaign will debut worldwide later this month, concurrently to the launch of the new styles in stores.

In the meantime, a series of behind-the-scenes images and a short clip have been released to tease the new collaboration and collection.

In the shots and footage, Leto poses both with the brand’s sunglasses and optical frames, which include vintage pilot-shaped options in Havana color, both rounded and squared lightweight metal sunglasses and retro-inspired frames combining a thick brow-bar with thin rims, among others. The actor debuts a short haircut and wears different looks to match the eyewear offerings, such as black leather and denim jackets, white shirts, a gray sweatshirt and a navy trench.

The campaign is the first step of the collaboration. In fact, Carrera announced that an Inspired by Jared Leto eyewear collection will be unveiled in September.

Carrera is one of Safilo Group’s proprietary brands. The Italian company also designs, produces and distributes eyewear collections for a range of brands, including Dior, Dior Homme, Fendi, Marc Jacobs, Max Mara, Swatch and Tommy Hilfiger, among others.

Jared Leto To Direct James Ellroy Thriller ‘77’ For Paramount

Jared Leto has signed on to direct Wolf Films’ period thriller 77 for Paramount Pictures. The film marks his feature-length scripted directorial debut.

David Matthews (Narcos, Boardwalk Empire) writes from an original screenplay by L.A. Confidential author James Ellroy. Set in politically charged 1974 Los Angeles, the story revolves around two police officers who team up to recover kidnapped heiress Patty Hearst, while simultaneously investigating the brutal murder of a fellow officer. They uncover not only relentless corruption and crime, but a dark and violent conspiracy as well.

The film will be produced by writer/producer Dick Wolf and Tony Ganz of Wolf Films. Leto also is producing. Emma Ludbrook is the executive producer. Leto and Ludbrook will work under their company Paradox.

Leto’s directing credits include the documentary Artifact, which premiered at Toronto in 2012; the docu short Great Wide Open; and the documentary series Into the Wild and Beyond the Horizon. As an actor, he won a Supporting Oscar for 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club, played the Joker in last year’s Suicide Squad and next appears in Blade Runner 2049.

Jared Leto and Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele have a bromance going that rivals some of the most inseparable dude duos in recent history. We're talking a Matt-and-Ben-circa-late-90s level of togetherness. One minute their hanging out backstage at a Gucci fashion show, the next they're palling around Italy after hours on Snapchat. They've turned up together at the Oscars. The twosome attended the Met Gala red carpet together. And today, Leto and Michele rolled up to the 2016 Fashion Awards in London looking like two peacocking emperors of DGAF menswear. Which is to say that they look bonkers—in the best way possible.

Now the movie star, rock star, and questionable gift-giver (we're talking about Leto here) has had more than his share of moments wearing the Italian house in 2016. And while we thought that off-the-runway grass green coat he wore to a Suicide Squad premiere this summer was nuts, we can officially say Leto's blown past that:

There's a lot going on here. To be specific, there's a double breasted notch lapel evening jacket, a tuxedo shirt, a yellow crystal bowtie (yellow. crystal. bowtie.), tuxedo stripe burgundy trousers, and black leather "GG" logo moccasins worn with white socks. Oh, and a kimono, another straight-from-the-catwalk piece that's like the souped-up offspring of a souvenir jacket (okay, a steroidal one) and a topcoat. Leto finishes things off with tinted aviators and a fresh choppy haircut straight from the Oasis band member handbook. (Leto's partner in high-end fashion crime went for a metallic brocade suit (with bootcut trousers!) for the big night.)

And you know what? Somehow, it works. It wouldn't work on you. It would never work on me. This wouldn't work on any man alive other than the new Joker, a guy with the uncanny ability to sell the f@#k out of whatever Donald Duck-embroidered cape the puts on. So cheers to 2016 Jared Leto and his constant reminder that you can wear whatever the hell you want as long as you think you look good—just maybe don't wear this exact outfit.

Jared Leto to Play Andy Warhol in Biopic

Jared Leto, Michael De Luca and Terence Winter are teaming to tackle the life of Andy Warhol, the famed pop art artist whose blend of art and commerce made him a household name.

Leto will portray the artist in the biopic, titled Warhol, as well as produce it, along with De Luca, the producer whose credits include such Oscar-winning and -nominated true-life tales as The Social Network and Captain Phillips.

Winter, the Boardwalk Empire creator who wrote The Wolf of Wall Street, will pen the screenplay, using the Victor Bockris 1989 book, Warhol: The Biography, as a jumping-off point. (Leto and De Luca jointly acquired the rights to the book, having had a desire to partner on a project for some time now, according to sources.)

Warhol stormed the art world in the 1960s with works that elevated American consumerism to artistic heights, showing that even Campbell’s soup cans, Coca-Cola bottles and celebrities can be spun into art.

Openly gay before such a thing was accepted, Warhol created an art studio called The Factory that attracted swaths of New York society (not to mention an unbalanced person or two, as one artist nearly killed Warhol when she shot him in 1968) and cranked out art ranging from silk screens to films to music. Warhol himself managed Lou Reed’s Velvet Underground for a while. In later years, he was a fixture in New York’s famed Studio 54 nightclub scene and mentored a new generation of artists, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, before dying in 1987.

Warhol was a hypochondriac who, according to friends and acquaintances, vacillated between a cold and shallow person — sometimes quiet, sometimes the center of attention — to a brilliant eccentric who wore wigs and even went to hairdressers to have them cut.

The part seems tailor-made for Leto, who won an Oscar for playing a gay man dying from AIDS in 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club and drew legions of fans for his take on Batman’s insane villain The Joker in this summer’s Suicide Squad. (The actor currently is filming the untitled Blade Runner sequel being directed by Denis Villeneuve.)

The project also plays to De Luca’s strengths of translating real-life figures to the screen. In addition to adapting the lives of Mark Zuckerberg and Captain Richard Phillips, he brought Oakland A’s coach Billy Beane’s story to screens with the Brad Pitt drama Moneyball. (His next movie heads in the opposite direction: Fifty Shades Darker, the sequel to S&M romancer Fifty Shades of Grey.)

Leto, producing via his Paradox production shingle, and De Luca, producing through his Michael De Luca Productions banner, are not aiming for a low-budget indie with Warhol but rather a strong mainstream project with prestige credentials.

Part of that prestige comes from scribe Winter, who was Oscar-nominated for writing Wolf of Wall Street and won Emmys for working on The Sopranos and was nominated for Boardwalk Empire. He last co-created HBO’s Vinyl.

Leto, De Luca and Winter are all repped by CAA, which helped to broker the deal.

Jared Leto Talks Rebel Style, Gucci's Alessandro Michele, and Why He Hates Shopping

Jared Leto’s style has gone through many incarnations, but his current phase—of joyfully wearing all the crazy stuff Alessandro Michele puts down the runway at Gucci—is by far our favorite. Unlike that bleached eyebrow moment he had in the late ‘90s (see: Fight Club), Leto’s current look walks the line between everyday and out-there just perfectly.

Following the announcement that Leto would front the very sexy campaign for Gucci’s Guilty fragrances, we had an opportunity to sit down with the actor to talk about his fashion synergy with Michele and his own formula for getting dressed. Here’s what he had to say:

GQ: Have you always thought of yourself as a Gucci guy?

Jared Leto: I never really wore Gucci. I never did. Alessandro has really done the impossible. He’s taken this classic brand and really turned it completely around and taken it in a direction that was so unexpected. [Alessandro and I] met and became friends here in L.A. and then we got to know each other and he asked me to do this. It was really organic and not the way this stuff normally happens. I thought it would be a great opportunity to work with someone that I really like and really respect as an artist. It was an easy yes.

What don’t people know about Alessandro?

I think people would be surprised by his humility. This is an industry that has an abundance of over-confidence. I don’t think anyone would dispute that, and I’m not trying to pick on anybody, but that’s just a fact, right? And sometimes that’s fun. A little ego can be quite entertaining. But [Alessandro is] a very humble, gentle, kind person. And I think that his humanity would probably surprise a lot of people because he’s so confident and bold in the choices that he makes.

What do you make of the stuff he’s been putting down the runway?

I think it’s incredible. I remember seeing this image of these women wearing these bright clothes and patterns and it struck me. I remember taking note and going like, “What is that? Who is that?” and finding out it was Gucci and being surprised. I didn’t think they did that kind of stuff. I think when Tom Ford was there I borrowed a Gucci tux one time and they were very nice and he was very kind. But I hadn’t thought about it in years, and then I saw that image and was really struck by the celebration of color, and nature, and flowers, and animals. He’s finally made clothing for men that is as fun to wear as the clothes that women get to wear. That’s not often the case. There’s a sense of joy and celebration in it.

How do you react to people who give you slack for wearing these kinds of adventurous clothes? Does it affect you?

I really don’t give what I wear very much thought. And I think that’s what you see. I don’t really care what people say. If I’m wearing like a tie-dye onesie and I’m in the middle of the desert, I’m not doing it for fashion points, I’m doing it because it’s fun or it makes me feel good. I kind of follow that when I get dressed. I think if it’s comfortable and it’s cozy and it kind of makes you feel good then those are good reasons to wear something. I mean, if I’m going to the Oscars or something, yes, there are people that are contributing and I’ll tell them what I don’t like or whatever. I know what I don’t like.

How do you come across the stuff you wear? Do you go shopping? Does it just magically appear before you?

I hate shopping at stores, online, anywhere. I will wear the same thing for three years straight unless somebody, like, forces me not to. It’s like, hey, I got this Gucci sweater. [Ed note: It’s embroidered with a large snake on the front.] And so I’m wearing that today. And I wore it yesterday too. Maybe I’ll wear it tomorrow. I just collect stuff, I guess.

What’s your interpretation of the fragrances? How does rebelliousness play in there?

The fragrances are really a dream about the possibilities of a life. Nonconformity, no judgement. I like to think that people can see that and appreciate that idea, and then by some mechanism of wearing the fragrance, sort of carry that idea with them in their own life. Whether it’s a weekend in Louisiana, or in New York City, or in Venice, Italy, or wherever they may be. I think there’s something kind of fascinating and powerful about that.”

There’s something subversive about the scents themselves too. That they’re almost unisex. They’re both strong and soft in their own way.

Yeah, they’re certainly not playing it safe. Nothing is quite what you expect with Gucci. I’m just happy to be a part of their adventure.

Hate Jared Leto’s Joker? He doesn’t care what you think

Actor. Musician. Director. It is difficult enough achieving success in any of these three fields, much less all of them – but the multi-talented Jared Leto is doing just that.

It takes great resolve and single-mindedness to stick by one’s passions and make something out of it, but Leto is not any ordinary person. Perhaps that explains the intense look in his eyes and the gravity of the words he speaks.

Leto is fresh from playing the role of The Joker in the blockbuster Suicide Squad, and spoke to us at a roundtable interview in New York before its premiere recently. Even before the conversation starts, there is an elephant in the room that begs attention – how Leto rates his Joker in light of the many legendary actors who have portrayed the Clown Prince of Crime before, most notably the Oscar-winning performance of the late Heath Ledger.

The question is never asked – Leto broaches the subject himself when queried about his preparation for the role.

“I have had many challenging roles – but The Joker was challenging in a different way because of all the expectation and the pressure that came with it,” he says.

He immediately dives into it. “There’s so much great work done,” he remarks, then rattles off the names with ease, “Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill, Cesar Romero – all these people have done such great, powerful work so there’s a lot of pressure – a responsibility – to deliver something that was adequate and not to let people down.”

Big shoes to fill indeed. So how does Ledger factor into Leto’s Joker in Suicide Squad?

“The inspiration that Heath gave me was the fearlessness that he had. Heath gave a perfect performance – not only the perfect villain or Joker, but one of the best performances on film. It’s absolutely incredible but you can’t go anywhere near what he did.

“The good thing about what Heath and the others have done is that it’s so good that you know exactly what you can’t do. It was actually a blessing that there had been these beautiful performances because I knew I had to walk a completely different path.”

At that point in time, Leto says he has yet to receive any feedback on his performance, and this is the first time he’s spoken to people who have actually seen the movie.

“I worked the hardest I could, worked as brave as I could be and that’s all I can ask of myself,” he says.

Leto is a method actor – during shooting he never once broke character and was literally The Joker brought to life.

“You say goodbye to your friends and family when you make a movie like this. I do whatever needs to be done to get to where I need to go. There was a great responsibility to deliver the very best I could and that meant being as focused and as committed as possible. So all the other things that people made busy with themselves – I shut them all out,” he admits.

When not on set, Leto is not one to rest on his laurels. He speaks of a documentary series he directed recently called Great Wide Open – five short films about America’s national parks and the adventurers who make it their playground.

But why documentary? With a Best Supporting Actor Oscar (which he won in 2014 for Dallas Buyers Club) under his belt, you’d think he would focus his attention on the silver screen instead.

Leto explains; “I love documentaries and watch them a lot. Some of my fave films of all time are documentaries. I love it. It’s a small team, small production which means you have absolute authority and control."

“I love that you can do so much for so little. There’s less pressure, you don’t have to spend as much money and you learn a lot from doing them,” he reveals.

Beyond film and directing, Leto is also widely known as the lead singer of the band Thirty Seconds To Mars.

Despite all the fame and acclaim that acting has given him, there is a connection with the audience that Leto gets from performing music that no other medium can give.

He mentions that he’s working on a brand new album with the band and then asks gathered journalists where they’re from. Coincidentally, he has played in each and every one of our native countries.

“Malaysia? We’ve been and played there. Colombia. Taiwan. Played in China. Brazil – we had a magical performance at Rock in Rio two years ago."

“I have a connection to all of you that is very different than if I was just an actor. I’ve played and had these beautiful experiences and it’s a very cool thing."

“I’ve spent a great deal of my life doing that (music) and it makes the conversation very different,” he says.

When asked if he would be reading reviews of his performance as The Joker on social media, he answers with disdain: “No, no, no. Why would I do that? It’s like eating my own vomit. You can’t read about yourself on the Internet.”
