AB Combs Receives GameTruck STEAM Grant

On February 5th, AB Combs Elementary School in Raleigh, NC was awarded the GameTruck Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Media Grant for $250. in cash and a two-hour GameTruck celebration event.

The grant money will be used to support the "Real World Science for Real World Kids" project. The grant will provide hands on materials to enrich the children's knowledge of bridge building, rockets, and forensic science. These funds are essential to getting AB Combs Science Olympiad team off the ground in its inception year.

GameTruck Triangle, a patented mobile video game theater concept featuring flat-screen HDTVs, comfortable seating, a high-quality sound system and the latest video game consoles, announced the upcoming 2012/2013 application deadline for the GameTruck Triangle STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Grant for Triangle schools.

“We support STEAM programs with the use of our platform, because we believe that STEAM education is creating future innovators to be forward-thinkers”, added Lizette Cruz Watko, owner and operator.

GameTruck Triangle is much more than a plush video gaming lounge; it complements its gaming capabilities with offering innovative educational programs designed to ignite kids’ interests and passion for science and technology.

“Future generations and students require the necessary technology, math and engineering skills to create a better country and society. GameTruck Triangle will award up to $250 and a two-hour GameTruck celebration to one Triangle school. Any public, private, or parochial K-12 school with applicable programs that benefit children in Durham, Orange or Wake Counties are eligible to apply. Applications must be postmarked or received on or before January 31, 2013.

Grant-making priority will be given to creative programs that integrate science, technology, engineering, arts, and math into classroom work. GameTruck STEAM grant supported program must be completed during the 2012-13 school year.

I cannot begin to express how thrilled we were with GameTruck. Our party was a huge success and all the boys had a fantastic time. Our game coach TJ was great with the boys and made sure everything was running smoothly. It was literally the best party we've had in years.

Several of my neighbors asked about it, and I told them how wonderful it was start to finish. It was easy to book, great communication with the owners and flexible when we wanted to upgrade our package. You guys are the best! We won't hesitate to use you again. My 5 year old already said he wants GameTruck for his party too.

My son who was turning 10 said, "this is a birthday I will never forget in my whole life." I believe it!

Cary, NC-I don't need much of an excuse to have a party and Holloween season is one of my favorites to do so. It brings joy and sweetness to Autumn in the Triangle. But mix costumes and a GameTruck video game party, and you have a costume party on overdrive.

GameTruck Triangle

Man I don’t know where to start with this game. I must admit there is a lot to argue on both sides. For the most part, I like the game for its autonomy, graphic detail, and career modes. You can truly create your own experiences in the game. Whether you want to be the coach and just call the play and watch your players run it to execution, or you plan on fully participating as a player on each down, this game gives you plenty of options before you call ‘hike’. To avid fans of NCAA it’s nothing new to call audibles, blitzes, hot routes, and line protection switches, in the game. However, the pre-play offense is much more fluid than it has been in the past, which fares well for beginners or medium level players. Overall the game feels more realistic than years past.

The New Heisman Challenge Mode offers a fun and interesting dynamic to the game. It reminds me a lot of the recent NBA 2k games where you try and re-accomplish the same milestones Michael Jordan and other Hall of Famers produced in their prime In an effort to unlock the player or other classic teams, jerseys and apparel. In this case, players can contend for a championship by placing one of 10 former Heisman Trophy winners on whatever team they choose to play with. Throughout the mode you set out to accomplish or beat the real life stats of the player in an effort to win the Heisman Trophy and also unlock each player in another game mode, Road to Glory.

I think it’s cool how “real” video interviews with each Heisman Trophy winner are unlocked throughout the season. In them, they discuss the achievements of their glory days.

My favorite mode is the Dynasty Mode. With so much realism and creativity behind the recruiting process in the game, I barely have the drive to play against the computer. I typically simulate the gameplay some weeks, while I focus much of my efforts on recruiting, staying up on ESPN stats, and maintaining job security. I’m telling you, this game has the ability to make you feel like you are really a coach or player for your favorite school.

Overall my grade for the game is: A-.

Negatives:

Way Too Much Going On

Although the game has so much to offer, that is also the problem with it.

There is just too much to do in the game and limits the simplicity of just playing it for fun. A beginner will have a hard time picking this one up with no knowledge of previous NCAA concepts.

Lag between play calls

-The game also has an issue with lagging before and after plays. This disrupts the games fluidity. Which for years has been the best part of the game and what set it apart over Madden.

No In-Game Save Option

-No in game save option. Players still can’t save their games in progress. Like you save your work on your personal computer, a player would also like to save the beat down their putting on their rival school in the first half, just in case they want to finish the second half after a nap or after a long days work. It makes no sense to be able to save highlights and replays if you can’t save the game for which they were acquired.

I hope this one was helpful to you. In the meantime, play smart, play safe and play social.

Here’s an easy way to add a teambuilding element to a company picnic or conference this summer: Hire a mobile video game theater like those offered through GameTruck (888.602.4263). The nationwide company’s fleet of climate-controlled units can accommodate as many as 16 players at a time and is outfitted with up to five flat-screen TVs linked to at least four Xbox 360s, three Wiis, and one Playstation. The company carries more than three dozen multiplayer games, including Rock Band, Halo, and Mario Kart.

“For teambuilding events, there are four main genres of games we recommend,” says project manager Tawnya Sawyer. “Sports, racing, rhythm, and first-person shooter games, specifically Halo.” Game Trucks operates more than 80 vehicles across 23 states. Their corporate client list includes PayPal, GoDaddy, and Intel.

The company claims that, beyond being just a fun time, playing video games with co-workers can have long-term benefits that translate to the workplace. “Recent studies show that multitasking, decision-making, and creativity are all increased through game play, so players are actually reaching a higher place in terms of communicating and trusting each other,” says Sawyer. “[Beyond free play] we also create programs that are specifically designed to increase cooperation, creativity, problem solving, trust-building, and communication.”

One example is a program created around Mario Kart called “Impaired Driver” that involves blindfolding the player holding the remote control while the rest of the group works together to communicate directions. Costs start from $300 per hour, with a two-hour minimum.
