10 Uses for Baking Soda

1. Freshen Cuddly Toys

Place the toys inside a plastic bag / garbage bag. Sprinkle baking soda on the toys and let sit for 15 minutes before brushing or vacuuming off.

2. Unclog A Drain

Pour 1/2 to 1 cup of baking soda down the drain, then slowly follow with 1/2 to 1 cup of white vinegar. Let sit for 10 - 15 minutes, then pour down a kettleful of boiling water.

3. Clean Up Grease Spills

If you have small oil and grease spills on your garage floor, sprinkle baking soda on the spot and scrub with a wet brush.

4. Erase Crayon From Painted Walls

Sprinkle baking soda on a damp sponge, rub gently on the mark. Rinse the sponge and wipe the wall clean.

5. Fruit and Vegetable Scrub

Sprinkle a little baking soda on a clean, damp sponge. Scrub the fruit or vegetables and rinse with clean water or make your own homemade fruit and veggie wash.

6. Treat Insect Bites and Stings

Make a paste out of baking soda and water and apply as a salve to the affected area.

7. Freshen Your Breath

Mix 1 tsp of baking soda in a glass of water and use as a mouthwash.

8. Keep Flowers Fresher

Add a teaspoon of baking soda to the water in the vase to help keep cut flowers fresher longer.

9. Remove Tea and Coffee Stains

If you have tea or coffee stains in your mug, simply dampen a cloth and dip it into a small amount of baking soda. Rub all around the cup and rinse with clean water.

10. Antacid

Stir 1/2 tsp of baking soda into a glass of water and drink.

Homemade Macaroni and Cheese

Ingredients:

12 oz macaroni pasta
3 tbsp butter
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
3 cups whole milk
1 lb Cheddar cheese, shredded
1/2 tsp dry mustard
salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

1. Cook pasta according to package directions, drain and set to one side.

2. In a large saucepan, melt the butter.

3. Add flour and stir until smooth.

4. Keep stirring, while slowly adding the milk.

5. Bring to a boil.

6. Cook, while stirring, for 2 minutes until thickened.

7. Reduce heat to medium low and add the cheese, mustard and seasoning to taste.

8. Cook and stir until cheese has melted.

9. Add the drained pasta and cook for another few minutes until heated through.

Serve and enjoy!

Meet Heather Von St. James: Mesothelioma Survivor

I recently learned about Heather Von St. James' story and wanted to help raise awareness of mesothelioma. This lovely lady is an inspiration and I am honoured to share her story with all of you.

In 2005, Heather was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma only three months after giving birth to her daughter. Mesothelioma is an aggressive, rare cancer that attacks the membrane lining of the lungs and abdomen. Approximately 3,000 people a year are diagnosed.

This type of cancer is only caused by exposure to asbestos and typically develops after a 10 - 50 year latency period following exposure. Heather's cancer was caused by secondary exposure to asbestos. When she was little, she wore her dad's work jacket, which was covered in asbestos fibres, to do outside chores.

Wikipedia states that asbestos is a naturally occurring silicate mineral used in manufacturing and building because of its strength, resistance to fire and affordability. Around 2 million tons of asbestos are still mined per year as of 2009, mainly in Russia (50%), China, Brazil, Kazakhstan and Canada (9% to 14% each).

Asbestos is still not banned in the United States. Approximately, 30 million pounds are used each year and it can still be found in many homes, schools and commercial buildings. The newest risk is from home renovation. If you are planning on doing a home renovation and suspect asbestos is present, please contact a trained and licensed abatement company to help you.

Feeling a chill in the air? Here are 5 activities to enjoy this fall season.

1. Visit a family friendly farm. Take a tractor-drawn hay bale ride, pet and feed the animals or ride a pony.

2. Make apple cider. Adjust the ingredients to fit your family's taste buds.

3. Enjoy the cooler weather. Ride bikes through a local park, jump in a leaf pile or make hot chocolate and take it with you on a nature walk.

4. Collect leaves for arts and craft projects. Use them to make leaf tracings, paint them and make a leaf print or create a fall wreath.

5. Bake your favorite treats. Baked apples, apple cider caramel cookies, pumpkin doughnuts, maple creme brulee or spice cupcakes.

Homemade Croutons

Ingredients:

2 - 3 pieces of good quality bread
Olive oil
Italian seasoning mix

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350F.

2. Lay out the bread slices on a baking sheet.

3. Drizzle olive oil over the bread slices.

4. Evenly sprinkle Italian seasoning mix over the bread slices.

5. Bake for 10 - 15 minutes until golden brown.

6. Cool and cut into 1" cubes.

Store in a zipper bag for a day or two or freeze for future use.

Orange Spice Simmer Pot Recipe

Fall is here!

Now it's time to make the house smell yummy. Simmer pots are a great way of adding moisture to your home (to combat dryness) and to make your home smell delicious!

Orange Spice Simmer Pot

1 or 2 oranges sliced
2 cinnamon sticks
1 tbsp of whole cloves

Add ingredients to a pot (or crockpot) of simmering water. Top up the water as necessary throughout the day.

Create your own flavors by adding or omitting ingredients such as vanilla extract, star anise, cranberries, allspice or ginger.

If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end.

Homemade Italian Seasoning

Ingredients:

1 tbsp dried parsley
1 tbsp dried marjoram
1 tbsp dried oregano
1 tbsp dried rosemary
1 tbsp dried sage
1 tbsp dried thyme
1 tbsp dried basil

Directions:

1. Place all ingredients into a food processor or spice grinder and pulse until desired consistency.

2. Store in an air tight container.

Here's a simple way to find your oven hot spot.

1. Preheat your oven to 350F.

2. Line a cookie sheet with bread slices and put into the oven.

3. When the bread starts to toast, make a note of which slices toast faster than the others. These indicate the hot spots in your oven.

Based on this knowledge, you can make adjustments in your baking (such as rotating pans or placing a pan in a different part of the oven) to prevent burning.
