Physicists Confirm They Have Found God Particle

2013-03-14T17:55:00.002-07:00

After nearly half a century of searching, scientists have just announced that they believe they've found a Higgs boson particle. The God Particle!

Physicists from the European Organization for Nuclear Research, popularly known as CERN, announced this week that a particle they discovered last summer using the Large Hadron Collider (pictured left) is indeed the fabled "God particle" first theorized in 1964 by physicists, including the particle's namesake, Peter Higgs.

According to Joe Incandela, a CERN physicist who leads one of the organization's two 3,000-scientist strong research teams. "To me it is clear that we are dealing with a Higgs boson, though we still have a long way to go to know what kind of Higgs boson it is."

According to the theory of how the Higgs boson works, objects get their size and shape from the way their subatomic particles behave in an energy field. Those subatomic particles interact with a key particle, and based on that interaction (how much or how little they attract), objects attain mass. Without mass, subatomic particles couldn't stick together and objects, no matter how big or small, would fail to hold their shapes. That key particle, the Higgs boson, became known as the "God particle" because without it, theoretically, objects of any kind couldn't exist. The universe would just be a mass of subatomic particles that could never stick together to form anything.

Back in July CERN announced that it found a particle that could be the Higgs boson, but didn't confirm that discovery. Now, after more than half a year of examining data, they believe the data from July "strongly indicates" that a Higgs boson has been found, though exactly what kind has yet to be determined. If CERN is right, this is likely the discovery that will earn the next Nobel Prize in physics.

Commercial test pilots, not NASA astronauts, will fly the first crewed missions that NASA hopes will at last restore America’s capability to blast humans to Earth orbit from American soil perhaps as early as 2015 which was totally lost following the forced shuttle shutdown.

At a news briefing this week, NASA managers at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) said the agency is implementing a new way of doing business in human spaceflight and purposely wants private companies to assume the flight risk first with their crews before exposing NASA crews as a revolutionary new flight requirement. Both NASA and the companies strongly emphasized that there will be no shortcuts to flying safe.

A trio of American aerospace firms Boeing, SpaceX and Sierra Nevada Corp are leading the charge to develop and launch the new commercially built human-rated spacecraft that will launch Americans to LEO atop American rockets from American bases.

The Twin Grail Spacecraft Will Be Crashed Into The Moon

2012-12-14T11:12:00.001-08:00

After close to a year circling the Moon, Nasa's Ebb and Flow will meet their demise when they crash on purpose into the lunar surface. But do not expect to see celestial fireworks next week's impact near the Moon's north pole spacecraft will not carve a gaping crater or kick up a lot of debris. And it will be dark when it happens.

A mission chief scientist Maria Zuber, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said
"We are not expecting a big flash or a big explosion" that will be visible from Earth. Still, it will mark a violent end to a successful mission that has produced the most high resolution gravity maps of Earth's closest neighbour. On Friday, engineers will turn off the science instruments in preparation for Monday's finale.

The spacecraft flew about 35 miles above the surface and later dropped down to 14 miles. About an hour before Monday's impact, they will fire their engines until they run out of fuel and slam at 3,800 mph into a predetermined target - a mountain near the north pole that is far away from the Apollo landing sites.
Ebb will hit first followed by Flow 20 seconds later. Though the drama will not be visible from Earth, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will fly over the crash site afterwards and attempt to spot them.

The last time Nasa aimed at the Moon was in 2009. The world watched through telescopes and over the internet as a spacecraft and its booster rocket smashed into a permanently shadowed crater that fizzled when spectators saw little more than a fuzzy white flash.

US Sent Futuristic Plane Into Space

2012-12-14T11:04:00.000-08:00

The United States on Tuesday launched the third flight test for a futuristic X-37B spacecraft, a small and pilotless plane that experts believe could open a new realm of espionage. The 29-foot long vehicle blasted off aboard an Atlas V rocket at 1:03 pm from Cape Canaveral in Florida on a mission about which the US Air Force has offered minimal details.

The United Launch Alliance, a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin, streamed live footage on its website of the blastoff. It said the mission would support "space experimentation."

The US military has described the X-37B program as a way to demonstrate "technologies for a reliable, reusable, unmanned space test platform" following the retirement of NASA's shuttle Orbiter program.
The secretive nature of the equipment on the X-37B has led to speculation in the media over the missions' aims, with some experts believing that the US Air Force is looking at new way of spying.

Space experts believe that the small vehicle, with its ability to return to Earth and head back up, could be part of a state-of-the-art espionage program or may potentially be used to interfere with rival nations' satellites. It is the second mission of the original X-37B which went into space in 2010 in the program's inaugural flight and stayed in orbit for more than half a year. A second X-37B vehicle returned to Earth in June after orbiting for 469 days in an endurance test that went far beyond the aircraft's intended flight span of 270 days. The X-37B project was launched by the space agency NASA in 1999 before being adopted by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which designs new technologies for the US military.

2012 Won't Be The End Of The World

2012-12-07T17:52:00.000-08:00

By all the reports of possible teenage suicide pacts and the potential for traumatizing fear in young children has prompted NASA to release a video and other information this past week discounting theories that the end of the Maya calendar on December 21st, signifies the end of the world as we know it.

On November 28th, NASA scientists took to the Internet to battle the rumors and calm the hype associated with the widespread misinterpretations of the Maya calendar which comes to an end on the winter solstice thus ending a calendar cycle called the 13th b'ak'tun. Many people around the world have come to see this date as a prophesy of the apocalypse, while others simply find it humorous, but NASA isn't laughing.
The event held on Google+ and throughout social media, with an invitation for Twitter followers to tweet any questions they may have to the #askNASA hashtag, was in response to emails and letters which have been pouring in to NASA from people dealing with severe anxiety related to end day fears, many of them from young people and some of them claiming to be suicidal.

"While this is a joke to some people and a mystery to others, there is a core of people who are truly concerned," said David Morrison, an astrobiologist at NASA Ames Research Center via a Google+ Hangout video chat. The NASA website page and the video put out by NASA, debunk nightmare scenarios ranging from planet Niburu getting too close to the Earth, solar storms, catastrophic tidal effects caused by planetary alignments, meteors, and a massive shifting of the Earth's magnetic poles,
to name a few.

Despite the 52 million tourists expected to visit Mexico's Maya regions, NASA is adamant.

"The world will not end in 2012," the NASA website says. "Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012."

Space Tourism Coming Soon

2012-12-07T11:16:00.003-08:00

Former Nasa executives are launching a private firm to send people to the Moon if they can afford the astronomical price. For $1.5billion , the Golden Spike Company is offering trips for two people, either to individuals or to countries, for research or national prestige. The goal is for the first of 20 launches to take off before 2020.

Nasa's last trip to the Moon was 40 years ago, and in the decades since the US won the so-called "space race" with the former Soviet Union there has been little official interest in going back there.
President Barack Obama cancelled Nasa's planned return to the Moon, saying, in effect, that America had been there, done that.

But Golden Spike has talked to other countries that have shown interest in the destination, said the company's president and former Nasa associate administrator Alan Stern.
He said he imagines countries like South Africa, South Korea and Japan as his clients.

"It's not about being first. It's about joining the club," he said.
He also mentioned "We're kind of cleaning up what Nasa did in the 1960s. We're going to make a commodity of it in the 2020s."

The company will buy existing rockets and capsules and develop new space suits and a lunar lander, he said.
Dozens of private space companies have started up in recent years.
Many hope to follow the success of Space X, which is operating under a contract with Nasa to ferry cargo to the International Space Station.

Golden Spike is made up of space veterans and its chairman is Apollo-era flight director Gerry Griffin, who once headed up the Johnson Space Centre. Advisers include space shuttle veterans, Hollywood directors, former Republican presidential primary contender Newt Gingrich, former UN ambassador Bill Richardson and engineer-author Homer Hickam.

Scientists Reported NASA's Budget Inadequate For Its Goals

2012-12-07T11:06:00.001-08:00

NASA suffers from a "mismatch" between its goals and the budget it has been given to achieve them, according to a panel that said the US space agency may need a complete overhaul.
The National Research Council, which convened an independent group of top US scientists, urged the White House to set a clear agenda for the agency, amid disagreement in the scientific community, and in the country as a whole, regarding just where the agency should be going.

The panel lamented "the lack of national consensus on NASA's most publicly visible human spaceflight goal," said Albert Carnesale, a professor at the University of California at Los Angeles, who chaired the committee that wrote the report.

"One stated goal for NASA's human spaceflight program is to visit an asteroid by 2025," he said, but he noted that scientists inside the agency have questioned this objective.
"We've seen limited evidence that this has been widely accepted as a compelling destination by NASA's own work force, by the nation as a whole, or by the international community," he said.
This lack of agreement, "along with budget uncertainty, has undermined the agency's ability to guide program planning and allocate funding," said Carnesale.
The study, which was sponsored by NASA, called on the White House to take the lead in setting long term priorities for the US space agency.

The panel flagged what it called "a mismatch between the portfolio of programs and activities assigned to the agency, and the budget allocated by Congress."
It added that "legislative restrictions inhibit NASA from more efficiently managing its personnel and infrastructure."

The panel said there were several possible ways to reduce the "mismatch," though it acknowledged any path would be difficult.
One scenario would involve "an agressive restructuring program to reduce infrastructure and personnel costs and improve efficiency," the panel suggested.
Another would involve "more cost-sharing partnerships with other US government agencies, private sector industries, and international partners," while a third possibility would be to "increase the size of the NASA budget."

The fourth possibility the committee suggested was for the US administration to considerably reduce the size and scope of NASA's portfolio to better fit its current and anticipated budget. Source Yahoo

James Cameron's Expedition Finds Weird Deep Sea Life

2012-12-07T11:02:00.002-08:00

The deepest place on the planet may also hold the clues to the origin of life on Earth.
The discovery of microbial mats bizarre looking, filamentlike clumps of microorganisms living off chemicals from altered rocks 35,803 feet (10,912 meters) beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean comes from samples and video collected by an unmanned lander, part of movie director James Cameron's mission to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

Researchers have speculated that a similar setup may have sparked the chemical steps that lead to life on Earth, and possibly elsewhere in the solar system."We do think that this chemistry could be the roots for metabolism," said Kevin Hand, an astrobiologist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif. "It could be the driving engine that leads to the emergence of life," he said. "Perhaps not just here, but also on worlds like Europa," an icy moon of Jupiter.

Cameron's Deepsea Challenger expedition made dives to the New Britain Trench and the Mariana Trench in the southwestern Pacific Ocean between Jan. 31 and April 3, with one manned dive to Mariana's Challenger Deep, the dark, flat pool that scientists now know houses a surprising array of life. A peek at results from the expedition were presented to a packed audience here Tuesday (Dec. 4) at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union.

The filmmaker journeyed inside a steel sphere encased in foam dubbed the Deepsea Challenger built to withstand the crushing pressures below the ocean's surface. The expedition traveled with two unmanned seafloor "landers" large contraptions hoisted over the side of a ship and dropped to the seafloor. Once on the bottom, bait attached to the lander lured seafloor creatures to the craft, and a suite of instruments took samples, photographs and data.

When he emerged, Cameron told reporters the view was "bleak" and "looked like the moon." But scientists who examined data collected during the deep dives, both manned and unmanned, soon discovered there was life in the coldest, darkest sea. Source Yahoo
