Some people come to party. For some of us it is definitely the need, or desire, for the meat of the salmon itself. Others pursue them for the challenge of catching one using various types of bait and tackle. Another type of fisherman uses the pursuit of the fall salmon as an excuse to be in the fall outdoors with the fresh air; the beautiful scenery; and close friends and family.
The first type of fisherman is usually outfitted with heavy rods, line, hooks, booze, and sometimes fireworks; and can usually be found fishing below the dam at all hours of the day and night. They setup their "camp" with lanterns and inflatable rafts for their gear. I rarely see them leave the river, even the ones who bring a large amount of beer as part of the gear. I guess they either hold it in or fall in the river to clean out their waders. After having filled my waders with river water twice this year, due to stupid missteps, I have no desire to do it myself, but I guess if your drunk enough the temperature won't bother you. And yes, I did say fireworks, it wasn't a typo. I saw it myself this year complete with "oohs" and "aahs." What can I say; these people are there to party.
The second type of fisherman is outfitted similarly to the first type, with the exception of the booze. They usually shake their heads at the party animals and mutter under their breath. You can sometimes see the two groups clash at the dam when their lines entangle and each one tries to get the other to let out line. This usually results in someone screaming profanities as their line gets cut by the other guy.
The third type of fisherman is usually armed with lighter, more specialized gear. Some people fish with long spindly noodle rods and light line that is tipped with a small morsel of salmon eggs to entice the fish into biting when it really isn't hungry. Some fish with various sizes of fly rods and use chuck-n-duck rigs tipped with spawn or flies; or fish wet flies or streamers. Yet others fish with spinning rods tipped with spinners, spoons, chuck-n-duck rigs, or float rigs tipped with spawn or jigs. Some of these people are actually targeting Steelhead that follow the Salmon up the rivers during their spawning run. You will probably start to see more Steelhead fisherman in the rivers as the fall progresses into winter. The other thing about this type of fisherman is that they often look for little known places to fish. That is what makes them so valuable to know.
The fourth type of fisherman can sometimes be confused with the third type, but there are some differences. The third type brings along equipment for comfort as well as fishing. They usually are accompanied by several other people and can be seen fishing in a group. They usually setup "camp" and have a few camp chairs, a small campfire made out of downed timber, maybe some marshmallows or hotdogs, and a few kids fishing. Don't get me wrong, these people are here to fish, but they are also here to enjoy the outdoors and each other's company. You can often spot them pausing with cameras to take pictures of the scenery and each other as they fish, because they are actually there after the memories more than the fish. This group also has the common desire with type three fishermen to get away from the large crowds by finding obscure spots to fish.
I guess you could say I fall into the last three categories. This year I have taken two trips so far. The first trip was a hardcore fishing trip with more time spent in the water than out and I had two fish as a result. My second trip was with family and was more about having a good time than fishing, although we did spend a great deal of time doing that. Sometimes it pays off as well; we found a spot that gave up a total of five fish for all the family, which is plenty for the year. If I can go again I think I will try to be the third type of fisherman and concentrate on perfecting one technique.
I guess there is room for all of us on the water in the fall as long as we are considerate. One disturbing trend is the yearly increase in the amount of trash near Tippy Dam and the other popular fishing spots. I'm beginning to think the DNR could make as much money, if not more, by handing out littering tickets instead of snagging tickets.

Grunion Runs – Fishing With Your Hands In San Diego

Fishing is peaceful and inspiring sport regardless of the type of fishing your doing. Well, with one exception – grunion runs.

El Grunionino

Throughout the year, the fish known as the grunion run in San Diego and much of California. This little silver fish reproduces by “running” up the beach during the high tide in the middle of the night. Literally thousands of the fish simply come storming up the beach with the waves to lay their eggs in the wet sand. It kind of looks like the beginning of a triathalon except the participants are going the wrong way and are pregnant.

The fish picked up their name from Spanish settlers because of, well, the grunting noise the make when doing their thing. It is a bit saucy now that I think about it. Anyway, the grunion averages five inches in length and has a silvery hue that shows in the moonlight. With thousands in the water, it looks like the a really fat person wearing way to many sequins while dancing to disco music.

You’re Inner Barbarian

“Fishing” for grunion requires you to get in touch with your inner barbarian. Under California law, you are not allowed to use bait, hooks, poles, nets or anything. Instead, you must physically catch the grunion with your hands. This, of course, results in you and others running around the beach like a crab while trying to snatch the grunions. They are exceedingly quick and slippery. You’ll be huffing and puffing before you know it.

Grunion are an extremely plentiful fish, but there are still rules to follow. As mentioned above, you have to go mano-a-fisho. No poles, nets or other items can be used. Second, you have to get a fishing license from the California Department of Fish and Game. Third, you can only go grunion hunting from May to September, the legal season in the area.

If you think getting in touch with your inner fishing barbarian sounds like a good time, here is the scoop on good spots. In San Diego, you should hit the beaches in Del Mar, La Jolla, Mission Beach or in front of the Hotel Del Coronado. These are all high end areas, which means the grunion must have excellent taste.

Running around the beach like a madman can be tiring. Bringing along fluids [okay, beer] is highly recommended.

Backyard Croquet

Backyard croquet is a gift that keeps on giving. You can use a croquet set and you can use it again and again and again and again for friend or family entertainment. I recently bought a croquet set and played a game of backyard croquet or poison croquet – another form of backyard croquet – with my family in my backyard. We had a nine-wicket, six player croquet set. Now that we have a set, we can play it as much as we want as a free, fun family outdoor activity. Anyone in the family can also invite their friends over for some cheap outdoor entertainment. They can also take it on dates or other group activities.
For my family it is especially nice to have outdoor games such as croquet to play. Each Friday we have a family barbecue and find ways to entertain ourselves during the barbecue. Outdoor games provide a form of entertainment that we can enjoy many times over for an affordable price. We also have other outdoor games like ping pong, frizbee, Kubb, and more. We just had to buy one croquet set and now we can use it as often as we like.

The last time that we played outdoor croquet in my backyard, during our barbecue, hardly anyone in my family had played it before, so I got to teach them all how to play. It is always fun when it is someone’s first time, especially when they learn the rule of roquet or of placing your foot on your ball, next to another player’s ball, to hit their ball far out of play.

During our first game, the lawn was not mowed, so it made the game a little more interesting. It was harder to aim and set the correct distance for your shot, so it made it more difficult for the experienced players to get an easy win. My brothers and sisters were able to keep up with me or at least keep pretty close throughout the game, although, I had not played for years myself. My sister just younger than me even pulled ahead of me near the end. I thought she might even beat me. My brothers and sisters thought it was fun to roquet or hit my ball, since I was the experienced player. Everyone always gangs up on the leading player in any game, it seems like.

My sister missed the wickets at the end and passed them, so it gave me the opportunity to pull ahead hit the final stick and become poison. I stayed close by my sister just younger than me for a while, threatening to kill her ball with my poison ball, to stop her, but also to give the other member of my family the chance to catch up and feel like they had a chance to win before I crushed them. Finally, I finished my sister off, and subsequently defeated all of the others. Even though none of them had ever played before, I still felt a sense of pride from defeating them.

We mowed the game for the second game, and this time everyone knew how to play and understood the rules, so I did not have to play that time. So it was a little better. I recommend playing on a nice cut lawn. It is more fun to be able to hit your ball a further distance without hitting it hard. The second game was probably a little more fun for everyone once they knew the rules.

Canada fishing tips !
1: Use Light Line Light (4- and 6-pound-test), thin-diameter lines offer less drag, or resistance, on a lure. This lets a walleye suck it in more easily.
2: Bounce the Bait When you’re using live bait, also use a bottom-bouncer rig. Bouncers are L-shaped wires that have a lead weight molded to the shaft. As an angler retrieves the rig, the weight bounces off the bottom and creates slack in the line, which allows the fish to inhale the bait more easily.
3: Shorten the Stroke Many jig fishermen pump their rods too vigorously, using long vertical strokes that can pull the bait out of a fish’s mouth. Use short lifts instead and you’ll hook more walleyes.
4: Offer a Bigger Bite Adding a plastic body to a jig also helps by increasing the surface area to which the fish’s sucking force is applied. It may seem counterintuitive, but a slightly bigger bait is easier for the fish to inhale.
5: Pump a Crank With Crankbaits, steady retrieves may hook aggressive walleyes, but a stop-and-go technique is better for deliberate feeders. Once the lure achieves proper depth, lift the rod tip, reel in the slack, and repeat.
6: Troll With the Flow When the water has a chop, trolling with the waves imparts that necessary slight slack in the line. Also, keep a close eye on your inside planer board as you make a turn; it will give you that small amount of slack that allows for more solid strikes—and more walleyes in the boat.
A place of enchanting beauty. With our guidance, you can experience the very best fly fishing on some of Europe’s most beautiful pristine and gin clear rivers. Fishing for the unique marble trout – often of double figures, record Soca grayling, and brown, brook and rainbow trout..

In Slovenia there is an abundance of fishing. We work hand in hand with the Fishing Associations to take you to the best fishing locations. Fishing in Slovenia is well preserved and the environment’s well-being is of great importance.

The country is largely forested with many varieties of deciduous trees on the hillsides. There is very little heavy agriculture, creating the perfect natural habitat for wildlife, with copious varieties of butterflies and birds, and a profusion of wild flowers. This in turn all helps with the prolific insect hatches that create some of the most spectacular fishing in Europe. Slovenia’s fauna and flora have to be seen to be believed!

This beautiful country nestles between between Italy and Austria, and is truly worth a visit for the discerning fly fisher.
The Soca, one of Europe’s most beautiful rivers, meanders its way through the Julian Alps. Its character changes from swift mountain stream to a mighty and strong river, with many deeps. Its blue green colouring, cutting through spectacular gorges and wide moon like shingle beds. Its cold temperature stops all but the hardiest bather. But here lies the marbled trout, growing to reach trophy sizes. Under the incredible strong current, marble trout (Salmo trutta marmoratus) survive to hunt the grayling. It’s wonderful to think they’ve survived in such profusion. This is a place that time forgot.
Come summer the massive predators start to hunt. Ferocious is its nature as it swirls at speed after its prey. When he’s eaten he’ll return to sleep on the riverbed. Or hidden under a rocky wall, no one will know he’s there, except the practiced eye of the fishing guide.
Do you go with your ego, expected fishing environment or something else? While length is a factor, the bend or action of the rod is a key factor.

Flexibility

Fly fishing rods are often defined by their flexibility. In laymen’s terms, flexibility means how far the rods will bend when the same casting effort is used.

Minimal Bend

A fly fishing rod that has minimum bend is often called a “fast” rod. The lack of bend lets the angler get lots of speed on the cast. This speed allows you to cast very accurately and farther away than rods with more bends. While these benefits may sound great at first glance, a fast rod can be frustrating. There is no room for error when using the rod. If you are going to use one of these rods, you need excellent motion and timing. Generally, only anglers with a lot of experience should have a go at using fast rods.

Moderate Bend

The next step down from a fast rod is one with medium flexibility. These rods tend to have good flexibility, but the bend is restricted to the top half of the rod. The rod requires less perfection of motion and timing, but is fairly accurate. If you’ve been angling for a while and have the basic techniques down, a moderately flexible rod is worth a try.

Slinky Bend

If you are just taking up fly fishing, you should use a rod with maximum flexibility. While others suggest a moderate bend is better for beginners, a “slinky bend” rod gives you a lot of leeway when it comes to learning to cast.

Fly fishing is relaxing and enjoyable. Pick the wrong rod, however, and it can quickly become frustrating and stressful. If you use your brain, not your ego, when picking a rod, you will have a blast.

Inflatable Pontoon Boats

Bryce Whitmore designed the modern whitewater inflatable pontoon boat, and in fact designed several models. The one that has been produced the most is a three-tube model of unparalleled maneuverability and load bearing capacity. This boat which is fourteen feet overall, can carry 6 passengers, their baggage, and a guide.

Not all Pontoon boats are 14 feet long. Some are 8 or 9 feet long as well. Pontoon boats come in all sizes and prices from $200 to $1,000. Users looking for an 8 foot Pontoon should expect to pay $500 to $700 for a new entry-level boat.

9-foot inflatable pontoon boats would cost between $700 and $900, but would offer stability in rivers with some white water. It should be noted, however, that Pontoon boats are not recommended for use in rapids rated higher than Class 2.

Inflatable pontoon boats are also called “belly boats” and are popular for fishing. They are lightweight craft with a rocking chair. Inflatable pontoon boat owners say they like the freedom from trailers and ramps, as well as the Pontoon’s stability on windy waters.

Pontoon boats for fishing are small, usually not more than 8 feet long. How it works is that two Pontoons sit on either side of the user. Pontoon hulls are shaped in a V hull pattern, greatly minimizing water resistance by slicing through it when paddling and allowing for excellent maneuverability.

The Inflatable Pontoons are connected by a frame, which also contains the paddles and the sitting area for the user. Inflatable pontoon boats are paddled similar to a rowboat, and the frame of the Pontoon boat makes paddling these boats easy.

Inflatable pontoon boats with comfortable seats, oar locks and storage platforms are the most popular these days. Float tube users sit low and heavy in the water, but Pontoons perch people higher above the waterline and, with oars, are much more maneuverable.

Inflatable pontoon boats with corrosion-resistant stainless steel or aluminum frames are durable and maintenance free. The Pontoon surface should be covered with polyurethane coated fabric, as it does not break down over time.

Fishing the Fall Salmon Run in Michigan - A Beginner's Guide

I decided to write this guide because a couple of years ago I was the "beginner." I don't claim to be a master at it, but I have lost my fair share of fish and have put a few in the freezer each year. Let me start by saying that, to the best of my knowledge, Michigan has the best Salmon fishery in the United States except for Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest (which is where our Salmon were originally stocked from). I also have to say that once you hook one, you will be "hooked" on the experience. I have broken this article into several parts to keep it organized, and from time to time the article will be updated as I learn more about it. This year I am going to try fly-fishing for the Salmon as well as bait fishing.

About the Fish
Salmon stocking started in Michigan in 1967 to combat the excessive Alewife population. The first species to be stocked was the Coho. As time went on the Chinook was added to the mix. Since that time they have taken off, and between the naturally reproduction that occurs and the DNR stocking we now have one of the best salmon fisheries anywhere. For pictures of the fish please refer to the Michigan Fishing Regulation book for the current year. In addition to the Coho and Chinook salmon you may also occasionally catch a Pink Salmon or Atlantic Salmon, but to the best of my knowledge it doesn't happen often. Maybe someone reading this can correct me if I am wrong.

Where to Go

We are lucky to have access to a state that has such a diverse fishery. Very few states have as many lakes and rivers as we do, or have the variety of fish that live there. For our particular purposes we need rivers that drain into the Great Lakes, since that is where the salmon spend their adult lives. If you search the internet you will find many rivers that have salmon such as the Muskegon, Big Manistee, Little Manistee, Pere Marquette, and Betsie, just to name a few. Some of these rivers have naturally reproducing populations of Salmon while others are stocked by the DNR. There are also several rivers in the Upper Peninsula that play host to salmon in the fall. In all the rivers you have to pay close attention to the fishing regulations because certain sections of the rivers may be closed to fishing to protect the spawning fish or have limitations on the gear you can fish with.

When to Go

The main salmon run occurs every fall. There is no set start date, but you can usually start to see fish in the river in early September, and expect the run to be pretty much done by the end of October. A lot of this depends on the weather. A lack of rain and/or warm weather can make the run start later, and extra rain with cooler temperatures can cause the run to start a little earlier. I guess it all depends on when the fall rains and cooler temperatures hit the area. If you go to the rivers during September and October you are going to eventually find fish, it's just a matter of timing it to catch the big run.

How to Fish For Them

This article is only going to cover techniques for the fisherman who wades. Most fishermen use either a spinning rod or fly rod and do the Chuck-and-Duck method. I believe this fishing method was named by the fly-fisherman because of the extra weight involved and the problem of getting hit in the head (Been There-Done That). You can also cast flies, such as Wooly Buggers, egg patterns, streamers, nymphs, and probably others I don't know about yet. Yet another method is to suspend spawn, flies, or jigs below a float of some type. Whatever rig you choose you will need some waders, a net of some type, a head-lamp or other light source for night fishing, rain-gear, and some warm clothes.

The Chuck-n-Duck method usually involves a three-way swivel, some type of weight, and a hook with salmon eggs or yarn balls. I have also seen anglers use flies or plugs instead of the hook and spawn. A diagram can bee seen at Figure 1 which is listed at the end of the article.

I personally prefer to use about a 3' leader when I fish this method but you will have to experiment and modify it to fit the conditions. If the fish are spooky you might need to lengthen the leader a bit more. You can also do a modified version of this without the three way swivel by using rubber-core sinkers for weight. To do this, tie the hook directly to your main line and then connect a rubber-core sinker above the hook about 18" for weight. This will get your lure into the current but not necessarily bouncing on the bottom. Again, you will have to experiment with the length of line between the weight and the hook, but I would keep it at least 12" from the hook. A diagram of this rig can be seen in Figure 2 which is listed at the end of the article.

Fishing flies for salmon is gaining in popularity. I have not tried it yet, but plan too this year. I understand that the usual flies are either egg patterns, woolybugger variations, big streamers, and egg-sucking leaches. I am going to try them all and see if I can get a hit. The nice thing about fishing the flies is that you also run the chance of hooking other trout species while searching for the salmon. If you want more professional instruction on fly-fishing for salmon there are several outfitters that are offering the service now. Do an internet search on it and you should have little difficulty finding one.

Bamboo Fly Fishing Rods

Fishing Tips - Bamboo Fly Fishing Rods

Beyond a doubt the best fly fishing rod material is good bamboo properly selected, cured, split, glued, and correctly proportioned. It possesses strength combined with lightness, resiliency, pliancy, power and balance in greater degree than either steel or solid woods.

Formerly anglers and rod makers could draw fine distinctions between male and female Calcutta and Tonkin " canes," but under present conditions good Calcutta is very rare and the word " Calcutta " is be¬coming merely a trade term. Good bamboo of all kinds is more difficult to obtain and a good piece of Tonkin is better than an indifferent one of Calcutta. Male Calcutta, however, is supposed to be superior to either the female or Tonkin. The cheapest split cane is known as steel vine or African cane. It is light colored and makes up into good, inexpensive bamboo fly fishing rods.

Six Strip and 8 Strip Bamboo Fly Fishing Rods

We assume that you know that bamboo is split and then glued together in order to utilize the hard outer enamel and reduce the diameter of the pieces. Some rods are made of bamboo split into six sections (hex¬agonal) and some in eight (octagonal) but the six strip construction is more often used. Some makers claim that the eight strip, being more nearly a true cylinder, possesses better action but this seems to be more theoretical than practical, while the tiny tips of an eight strip rod are likely to be " soft" due to the comparative amount of glue necessary to hold the pieces together. Eight strip rods cost more than the six strip and if the angler wants a round bamboo fly fishing rod they are preferable to the six strip planed down as planing certainly must injure a rod. As a general rule a well-made six strip rod leaves little to be desired.

Special Feature Bamboo Fly Fishing Rods

A novelty in bamboo fly fishing rod making is what is known as the " double built " rods which are made of two layers of split and glued bamboo, one within the other. They are heavier and strong, and it is claimed, hold their shape better, than ordinary rods and are popular for sea and salmon fishing but unnecessary, I believe, in single hand fly rods. An English innovation is the steel center rod which consists of a fine piece of well-tempered steel running as a core through sections of regular split bamboo. The makers claim this construction gives a rod of superior casting power with only of an ounce added weight. Friends who possess rods of this kind are enthusiastic admirers of this construction for heavy fishing.

An American maker supplies a rod of " twisted bam¬boo " which he claims equalizes the strain and pro¬duces better action. I have never tried a rod of this type so am unable to pass on its merits, but Perry Frazer, in his " Amateur Rodmaking," speaks well of it.

Fishing in Finland

Fishing in Finland is the most popular kind of rest for.

The statistics asserts that more than third of population of the country is fond of fishing, and it isn’t surprising. Absolutely sure?

I've been a coach and I've had a lot of coaches. You know what I've found? Some coaches put all the pieces together and some just don't invest time developing the coaching skills that make a difference.

I can't turn you into a coaching superstar overnight but I can get you started with these six powerful communication skills. I'll break them into two groups: Verbal and Non-verbal.

Three verbal communication skills you must master:

1) Consistency

Don't send your players mixed messages by telling your team something today and then two days from now completely contradicting yourself. Your players must be able to trust the words that come out of your mouth.

Also, keep your tone consistent with what your words are intending to get across. I had a coach once who, when one of us messed up, would say, "That was great" in a dripping wet sarcastic tone. Talk about sending us a negative message and beating team morale into the ground!

2) Honesty

Be honest with your team and always in a positive way. Your team knows when mistakes are made so don't try to ignore them. If you try to gloss over them, you'll lose your team's respect. Just be sure to correct mistakes in a positive way that helps a player see what was done correctly but also feel good about fixing the mistake.

When pointing out a mistake, first say what was good, then say "and if you follow through properly, you'll get the proper spin on the ball", rather than "but if you follow through properly, you'll get the proper spin on the ball".

3) Be Concise

Don't speak to your team unclearly. Think through what you want to get across ahead of time and deliver your thoughts in a clear, concise manner. Come right out and say it. Don't go off on tangents and bore your players with unnecessary talk. Get to the point and then get the troops moving.

Three non-verbal communication skills you must master:

4) Facial Expressions

Be aware of how closely your team pays attention to what your face is "saying". Don't be a phony by trying to hide what you really feel with a fake smile or a serious blank stare.

Realize, also, that just a simple smile can do wonders for a struggling player or a player unsure of what they're doing.
Show them that you're behind them, glad to be with them and there to help.

Don't overdo this, though. Your players will pick up on that. Be genuine in your coaching efforts.

5) Body Language

If you're standing on the sideline in a way that shows you are happy to be there and confident, how will your players respond as opposed to you scowling around all hunched over and looking angry? Remember to present body language that represents enthusiasm, class and character.

Body language can also be used in the form of physical contact such as a pat, a handshake or an arm around the shoulder. Stay ethical, of course, but physical contact can show your players the many emotions you feel about them - happiness, concern, affection, approval, etc.

6) Listen

This one's huge! You need to pay attention to your players. You've got to focus on really seeing and hearing your players' verbal and non-verbal signals.

If your players keep hearing you say, "What was that?" or "Did you say something?", you're in trouble and you need to work on your listening skills big time.

Start practicing this coaching skill and watch how much more you instantly start to learn about your team. You'll see a player is upset over something even though he's trying hard to hide it. You'll see how each player reacts to not only you but to one another.

Master these six coaching strategies and watch your coaching skills skyrocket. Your players must know you care way before they'll care about what you have to say. Remember this because too many coaches don't.

Fishing in Albania

                                                        (photo Lake Scutari)

Albania’s waters vary from a large shelf, which is easy to trawl, in the north and deep water with a rocky seabed in the south. The key commercial species include several species of demersals, small and large pelagic fish, crustaceans and molluscs. Approximately half of Albania’s fish production is exported to the EU, mainly to Italy and Greece.

The licensed Albanian fishing fleet is small, consisting of around only 160 vessels; however, many of these operate only on an intermittent basis and there are many vessels fishing without licenses. A lack of effective management means that many coastal areas are over-fished and some fisheries, such as small pelagic fisheries (such as sardines an anchovies) are underexploited.

Albania is receiving finance from a number of external sources, such as the World Bank and the EU INTERREG II programme to help develop its fishing industry, increase the incomes of fishing communities and achieve sustainable use of marine resources.

Short history: Albania is a small country in Europe covering an area of 28 748 square kilometres, and is located in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula. The territorial waters are extended up to 12 nautical miles (22 km) from the coastline. Albania has a population of 3.2 million and one the highest population growth rates in Europe. Fishing activity takes place along the entire coastline. However for the most part it is concentrated along the continental shelf zone, which on the Adriatic side in the north extends 25 miles, but only 2-4 miles on the side of the Ionian Sea. Albania lies in the FAO-GFCM Geographical Sub Area 18.

Fishing in Albania is primarily marine fisheries, although lagoon and inland fishing does take place on a limited scale. During recent years aquaculture is being increasingly promoted with particular focus on carp fingerlings and fish for general consumption (including sea farms). Currently there are 58 Albanian fish farms: 9 fish farms, 3 carp fingerling hatcheries and 46 for trout culture.

Albania’s domestic fisheries production in 2006 was approximately 7 699 tonnes, of which 5 729 from capture and 1 970 from aquaculture. In addition, fishery imports in 2003-2005 totalled an average of about 13 559 tonnes, while fish exports stood at 4 382 tonnes.
Fishery imports in 2006 totalled about 16 347 (1 000 USD) while exports was 23 914 (1 000 USD) with a net balance of 7 567 (1 000 USD). In 2003-2005, average per capita supply was 4.5 kg/year. (FAO, 2008).

The Albanian fisheries economy can be roughly valued on the basis of estimated landings in 2003 of 2 000 tonnes of mixed marine species and 1 000 tonnes of mixed freshwater species. At average first-hand sale prices of about 2.80 USD (lek 400)/kg for marine fish, 1.90 USD (lek 270)/kg, this equates to a total first-hand sale value of 7.50 millions USD. (In 2000 and 2001: 1 US$=140 lek) (Flloko, 2004). Albania has a fishing fleet of about 212 boats (2002 data) concentrated in four main ports: Durres, Vlora, Shengjini and Saranda, where about 900 people are employed. The fishing fleet mainly concentrates on trawl fishing for which about 62 percent of the fishing vessels are used.

FLY FISHING

The longest river in Albania is the Drin (about 175 miles [280 km]), which originates in Kosovo. Other main rivers are the Seman, Shkumbin, and Vjosë, all of which drain the central part of the western plains. Albania also has many lakes, the most important of which are Lake Scutari (known in Albania as Lake Shkodër) in the northwest and Lakes Ohrid and Prespa along the eastern border.

Fishing in Sweden

Pike fishing in Sweden is among the best in the world. There are huge stocks of pike in countless lakes and rivers, as well as along the brackish water on the coast. And they weigh in at up to 20 kilos!

All the way along Sweden's long coastline there are plenty of fighting silver sea trout.
There are fantastic opportunities for fly-fishing everywhere in Sweden - above all for trout. In many areas, particularly in the north of the country, there is also rewarding fishing for grayling, whitefish and char.

The salmon is often called the king of fish. The fighting sea trout is an equally strong and attractive fighter. Both provide some exciting fishing in Sweden's rivers. And trolling for large salmon and sea trout is the best in the world.
New paradise for coarse anglers
Dedicated coarse anglers are discovering that Sweden is a guaranteed safe bet. The fantastic fishing for large tench, bream, roach, rudd and carp brings them back year after year!

We always do our best to ensure that children of all ages have a good time during a fishing holiday. There's so much to see and do that the whole family is guaranteed a memorable stay in Sweden!

Seasons.

From north to south it is more than 2.000 kilometres and therefore the climate can be vary extremely in different parts of Sweden. In January it can be above zero and free of snow and ice in the southern parts of the country but in Lapland it may be between 20 or 30 degrees below zero and several meters of ice on the lakes. Spring normally begins in the south around March - April, but it may be as late as June before the snow and ice begins to melt in the north.

It is incredibly important to consider the great variations in the climate when you plan a fishing holiday in Sweden, especially if you are considering travelling to the north, as the waters are only ice free for three or four months each year. In the southern parts of Sweden it's possible in some waters to fish all year round. Therefore it is difficult to give general advise when it comes to season, since the climate gives very different conditions in different parts of the country. As for instance, April is normally very good for spinning for pike and trout in the south, but in the north it's the peak period for ice fishing. As a fishing tourist you should always allow good time to research your holiday and check when the best time in the specific area, is favourable for the species of your choice.

Methods.

Fishing from boat
Fishing from a boat is much more common in Sweden than in many other countries. When you plan your fishing holiday, you should consider that boat fishing is not only part of the experience but also can create new possibilities. Many lakes and rivers are big, so fishing from a boat can add a new dimension and give better catches. In many places it's possible to hire a boat with and without a motor. In Sweden it is also usual to use a fish finder to make it easier to locate the best fishing areas.

Spinning
Spinning is the most common and often the most effective method when fishing for predator fish. A common bait for pike, zander, salmon and trout is the wobbler, but even spinners and spoons can produce good catches. When you fish for sea trout along the coast, long thin spoons, often combined with a fly on a dropper can be rewarding.

Fly fishing
Fly fishing is a very common method in Sweden. Mainly trout and grayling are caught on fly, but even char, salmon and sea trout can be fooled. There are even good possibilities for catching perch and pike on fly. Along the coast it's also very popular to fish with fly for sea trout in the sea.

Coarse fishing
Coarse fishing is a good method for perch, pike and zander fishermen, who use live or dead bait. The possibilities to catch big, roach, tench, bream, ide and other coarse fish are also extremely good. The reason for this can be that relatively few Swedes practice this kind of fishing. Many of the waters therefore contain extremely good stocks of course fish species.

Trolling
Trolling for salmon and trout is very popular especially in southern Sweden in the big lakes Vänern and Vättern. The boats for this type of fishing are normally equipped with all the special gear for trolling such as down riggers, fish finders, rod holders etc. It is also common to troll from a rowing boat, trolling a couple of wobblers behind.

Ice fishing
Ice fishing is a very common method in the northern parts of Sweden, where the ice is extremely thick for a large part of the year. Warm clothes are of course important for this kind of fishing. A popular and exiting form of ice fishing is "kikmete", bait watching. In this form of fishing you lie belly down on a reindeer skin that is placed on the ice and shading your eye with your hands you look down a hole that is bored in the ice and watch your bait until a fish comes to take it. The tackle needed for this type of fishing includes a ice drill, ice fishing rod that is normally about 30 cm long, special line that doesn't freeze and special tiny spoons called pikar, that are often baited with maggots.

Without a knot, however, you’ll not be snatching the Muskie of your dreams.

Fly Fishing Knots

First thing first, we need to get the lingo down since we wont be using illustrations in this article. Three basic terms will cover practically any aspect of the knot tying process. “Tag end” refers to the last ten inches of so of line you are holding in your hand, to wit, the pointy part you will be pushing through and wrapping around things. “Standing end” refers to the rest of the line. Yes, very complicated and difficult to understand. “Wrap” refers to the action wherein you move the tag end of the line one full revolution around the standing end. The wrap can also be called a turn, but you have the general idea.

As with practically anything in fly fishing, there are an infinite number of variations to knots. Mysterious variations include the Steroidius Double Flip [good for catching professional athlete fish], the Marigold Hammer [good for catching the neighbor’s plants while practicing in your back yard] and the Wifeous Annoyous [a complex knot that gets you in trouble with the wife since you’re supposed to be painting the garage], but you probably start with the “Aarrgg, Dammit…” knot common to beginners.

Fisherman’s Knot

Other than tying your shoes, the easiest knot to learn is the fisherman’s knot. Get your hook in one hand and tag end in the other. And a one and a two…

1. As you proceed, keep everything slack. We will be passing the tag end through loops we create. DO NOT tighten anything until told to!

2. Pull the tag end through the eye of the hook.

3. Bend the tag end back to the standing end and wrap four or five times. Make sure you do not tighten the wrap. [You should now have a closed loop through the hook.]

4. Take your tag end and push it through the loop formed by the wrap. Do not push it through the hook eye, just the bigger loop of line.

5. You will have just created another loop and should pass the tag end through again.

6. Slowly pull on the hook and stag end until the knot is tight. Watch those fingers.

Congratulations! If you’ve tied the perfect knot, it is time to hit local fishing spot. If you’ve made a mess of it, try again. Either way, you get to avoid painting the garage.

Fly Fishing in Russia

A few years back, I spent a year living in Siberia and had a chance to head out to a town called Tinda. Much to my surprise, a couple of the locals had fly fishing on the menu.

The Siberian Surprise

Mention the word “Siberia” and most people think of bleak, frozen tundra stretching for hundreds of miles. Well, this is more or less true in the winter. In the summer, however, much of Siberia is a burst of green with temperatures in the eighties and nineties. As I had failed to bring shorts, this was a bit of a surprise to me.

Living in the city of Chita, I had an opportunity to visit the forest town of Tinda. Tinda is located about a day east of Lake Baikal and was built in the 1950s to act as a lumber town. The communist government haphazardly relocated a hundred thousand people and there they remain today. The area around Tinda is very mountainous and very beautiful. As the winter snows melt, rivers, lakes and creeks spring to life.

While in Tinda, I was invited to go fly fishing with the sons of the people I was staying with. Hilarity was sure to follow since they spoke no English and I was fluent in Russian at about a kindergarten level. Off we went strolling to the apparent local hot spot.

After a 45 minute walk, we came upon a slow moving creek that looked like something you would find in Wyoming. Trees towered over us and cast shadows across the water. Shallow pools of water formed along the bank and I could’ve sworn I saw more than a few of our slippery friends.

As every person knows, a first timer at anything will always have success. The boys had fished this spot hundreds of times, but I hadn’t. By all that is good in the universe, I should’ve caught 20 while they caught nothing. Alas, evil had the day. I caught nothing, nada, zippo. Nikoli and Oleg, on the other hand, were getting fisher elbow.

Although they caught a lot of fish, I can’t tell you what they were. The language barrier was just too much. The fisher were six to 10 inches long and appeared to be related to Mackinaws, but the vodka celebration made this pure speculation. Hungary has warm clean waters which result in big catches, with fish such as Carp, Catfish, Bream and Pike. The Hungarians have a tendency to eat the fish they catch so you may receive some strange looks if you throw a fish back if you are fishing in Hungary.
With many lakes and rivers you are bound to find your fishing spot, with popular areas being Lake Balaton and Lake Tisza offering a variety of fish. The fish include Perch, Pike, Carp, Crucian Carp, Roaches and Bream so fishing in Hungary gives you some variety.
Hungary hosted the 2007 World Fishing Championship at Lake Velence – an area between Budapest and Lake Balaton.
The air is cool and crisp. Yes, this is a great time for fishing.

As you come to the edge of a swiftly moving stream, you see a great fishing adventure beckoning. You set down your tackle box and your rod and reel, slip off your waterproof jacket, and slip on a pair of hip waders over your fisherman's vest.

The abovementioned are just a few of the many fishing accessories that are available to you from stores, catalogs and the internet. Read on to learn more about the accessories you need to make fishing even more fun.

The Fishing Basics

The backbone of your fishing equipment is your rod and reel. For the casual fisherman, the basic rod and reel is all you need. Once you are more experienced, you will better know your tastes and can upgrade accordingly.

Tackle ranges from simple to extremely complicated. Basic tackle includes hooks, sinkers, bobbers, fishing line and needle nosed pliers.

A net is also a good addition. Choose a net size based on the fish size that you are after.

High Tech Tools

Electronics have, to the alarm of purists, invaded the fishing arena. There are devices that help you locate where the fish are located. And there are alarms to alert you when you have a fish on your line. Those poor fish won't have a chance.

Clothing For Anglers

Fishermen's clothing necessities include a fishing hat and sunglasses to protect you from the sun. A fishing vest with lots of pockets comes in very handy. A good waterproof jacket is essential for keeping you dry when the weather isn't. Waders, in thigh or chest height, help extend your reach by getting out into the water.

Other Useful Accessories

You should also consider: a tackle box, forceps, fishing knife, scissors, flashlight, wading shoes, and a fishing belt. If you are fishing from a boat, you will need a flotation vest.

Ukraine is becoming more and more popular with tourists for their superbly serene lakes that are perfect for fishing but in winter, the lakes take on a whole new dimension. The peaceful white wonderland is an even more tranquil setting for a fishing trip as anglers can sit and practice with lines, fish hooks or spears to make a catch. There are a few things to look out for when searching for the perfect place to go ice fishing in the Ukraine.
Remote Area – When you want to relax and enjoy a peaceful setting, the best places can be found in remote areas of wilderness in the Ukraine. Look for quaint village locations that are set near river complexes within the Ukrainian National park for superb ice fishing and a chance to experience Ukrainian village life.
Species Fish – When you go ice fishing, it helps to choose a remote and relatively undisturbed lake that holds a variety of species of fish. Look for locations that include around 12 species for a more interesting assortment of fish.
Good Accommodation – When you take an ice fishing holiday, you want to spend as much time out on the lakes as possible and less time worrying about cooking and finding food in a remote location. Look for purpose built log cabins that can cater to your needs and cook your group meals in-house and even prepare your catch of the day.
Amenities – When you travel in winter, you want to ensure there are adequate facilities to keep you warm and comfortable throughout your trip. Look for accommodation that contains a sauna, electric heaters and a relaxation room to warm you up after a day on the ice.
Expert Guides – Ice fishing can be challenging and exciting, but also a dangerous sport. Ensure you visit a river complex that offers expert guides that are on hand to give you advice and training on the ice.
If you are looking for the best places to go ice fishing in the Ukraine, you could benefit from a fishing experience with Fish and Chizh. Their comfortable accommodation and expert guides can help groups up to 10 people enjoy a winter break on the ice. To find out more about their facilities, boats and resident fish; visit the Fish and Chizh website.

A good location you can find here .But also is recommend TISZA river .LYUTA river is another good place to go.

1. Sweet/fresh water (Siluroides) – (Alburnus alburnus), grey mullet, chub (Mugil cephalos), carp (Cyprinos carpio), sheat-fish (Silarus glanus), (Perca fluviatilis), pike (Esox lucius), pike-perch (Stizostedion lucioperca), (Salmo trutta fario), (Salmo gairdneri irideus), (Salvelinus fontinalis). Most of these fishes are over 2kg and can be prepared and eaten or returned in water depends on wish. There are lots of small kind fishes for fun and food. Harpooning in sweet water is forbidden in Bulgaria. Forbidden time for fishing concerning spawning, month May for all sweet water fishes, only for (Salmo) in mountains Oct. to Dec. For anglers Black Sea (salt water) is allowed the whole year.
2. Black Sea / salt water fishes - (Mesogobis), (Mugil cephalus), (Liza aurata), blue fish (Pomatomus saltrix), tunny (Palamis sarda), turbot (Psetta maxima maeotica), (Trachurus mediterraneus ponticus) and small dog-sharks (Squalidae). Harpooning allowed the whole year. There are no dangerous fishes in Black Sea. Also the only kind of shark, the dog-shark is small (15 kg. Max.) and never attacks people. The only way to see and catch such a shark is to go with a boot 4-5 km from the shore and to fish them in deep water.
A good map from Black sea is here.
But i also recommend Burgas Lake.I little describe by this lake.
This lake is an open firth (known also as Vaya lake) of roughly oval shape with maximum length of 9.6 km, maximum width of 4.5 km. and a surface area of 2760 ha. Its depth at places reaches 1.3 m. Thus the Bourgas lake is on the first place rated by size among the natural lakes in Bulgaria. It is separated from the sea by an extensive sand bar where the industrial sector of the town has been built on. Today the Bourgas lake is linked with the sea by a channel ending with a sluice. The rivulets Aitoska, Sandardere and Chukarska flow at the lake’s western part. There are insignificant seasonal and annual fluctuations of the lake’s water level.A rich plant and animal life is a typical feature of the Bourgas lake. It is surrounded by a ring of reed growth which forms in the westernmost part a very large bed. More than 60 species of invertebrate have been found there along with over 20 fish species. So far 254 bird species have been recorded on and around the Vaya. Many of them are rare for Bulgaria or for Europe and 9 of them are among the globally threatened species. Some of the birds like Herons, Cormorants, Black-winged Stilts, Grebes breed there, while other species, mostly Ducks, Geese, Pelicans and Swans spend the winter or roost during migration. This was the main reason to put the lake in the European IBAs List.
An area of 379.4 ha located in the lake’s western part has been designated as a protected site to preserve the breeding colonies of Night Herons, Little Egrets, Squacco Herons and other water birds. Of the wintering species of greater conservation interest are the Pygmy Cormorant – up to 5800 ind.; the Dalmatian Pelican – over 300 ind.; the White-fronted Goose – over 20 000 ind.; the White-headed Duck – over 2000 ind.; the Red-breasted Goose – up to 6450 ind.; the Pochard – over 13 000 ind.; the Shoveler – over 6000 ind.; the Tufted Duck – up to 16 000 ind. Of the breeding birds the Cormorant numbers over 200 pairs, the Night Heron numbers up to 10 breeding pairs, the Little Egret – over 25 breeding pairs, the Squacco Heron – about 10 pairs, the Grey Heron – over 15 breeding pairs, etc.
In the past the Bourgas lake was of the highest bioproductivity in Bulgaria. Annual amounts of fish harvested from Bourgas lake came to hundreds of tons. After the oil refinery ‘Neftochim’ was built the lake’s economic value was almost completely lost. Its ecosystem was especially hard hit during the 1970-ies when no treatment of the refinery effluents was even attempted. However, for several years now pollution of the lake waters has been terminated and it has started gradually to restore its former valuable biodiversity.

More than 20 types of fish and 254 types of birds can be observed in the region. Apart from nesting birds, tourists can observe some species that rest there during their migration period. As a result, Vaia was named an ornithological spot of European importance.

In 2001, the channel connecting the lake to the sea was cleaned, allowing sea fish to enter Vaia. This provided suitable fishing conditions. Yet, the fish that is most often caught there is carp.
Crete is an island with a coastline exceeding 1000 Km and fishing was traditional occupation of its people. Today though, things are a little different. There are still plenty of fishermen, both professional and amateur, but the fish stocks, and catches, are getting lower and lower. There are a number of reasons for this including:
- Overfishing, a common problem in many countries, is the main reason for the scarcity of fish.
- Secondly, environmental damage, like the now outlawed fishing with dynamite, has also had a detrimental effect.
Many of us who live in Crete used to go fishing in the past but the poor catches have dampened our enthusiasm for the hobby and now our fishing rods lay forgotten in some storage room. There is little enjoyment in driving for one or more hours to reach the "perfect" place, spending several hours there but only to return home with a few tiny fish. Finally, like many others, I ended giving up fishing for the joy of snorkelling. Of course there are still some lucky (or perhaps they are just better than me) fishermen who continue to catch some big fish.
There are still fish in Crete waters and fishing may offer you some relaxing hours if it is your kind of hobby. And remember, though the fish of Crete may not be so big these days, they are still very tasty!

Fishing in Crete - Tips
If you want to try fishing in Crete, then it may help to know what kind of equipment and bait the locals use, and the sorts of fish you are most likely to encounter.

1. Equipment
There are various ways of fishing but we here we will stick to the simplest and the most common one. The equipment is very simple and it consists of a pliable, telescopic fishing rod 4-7meters long, a fishing line ø0.30-0.35 mm, a float and two small hooks. The line has the same length as the rod.
Common baits include worms, shrimps without the shell and cut in pieces and a paste of bread and cheese.
The fisherman would fish from a dock or on a rock with this tackle and bait, holding the fishing rod steady while he is watching the float. If the float trembles on the water or starts to sink, then the fish has taken the bait and it is time for the fisherman to strike by lifting the rod and carefully pull the fish out of the water.
Catch for this method is mainly the small fish that live close to shore: mullet, boops (bream), saddled bream, bass, etc.

Fisherman, Minoan Fresco

2. The Bait
- Shrimps. Peel them off and place them on a flat pan. Add a lot of salt to them and then leave them under the sun to dry. When they are dry on top, then turn them to dry the other side too. If you do a good job then the shrimps will last several days unrefrigerated. Do not put the whole shrimp on the hook. Cut it in small pieces with a sharp knife or a razor.
- Flour and cheese paste. You will need some flour, water, butter or olive oil and blue cheese. Make a thick dough with these ingredients and keep it in the fridge until needed.
- If you want to attract the fish close to you, then mix pieces of dry, several days old bread with sea water and sand in a backet. Throw small quantities of this watery mixture into the water and close to you. Repeat this often. This is called "malagra" or "mpasmos" and it works better when the sea is rough and the water not clear.
3. Best fishing - times and sea conditions
- A common rule is that fishing is not succesful on very hot and windless days. Fishing at times when the sea is rough is more likely to lead to a good catch.
- The best hours for fishing are early morning (sunrise until 10 am) or late afternoon (17:00 - sunset).
- Underwater Fishing
If you have ever fancied your chances of snorkelling with a spear gun to catch your fish, then you will soon learn that fish scare quickly in the vicinity of a diver with a speargun. Your chances of success will increase however if you are competent to dive and fish in waters as deep as 10-20 meters. Always be careful of speedboats and other craft.
To experience sportfishing that sees a hit, or a follow, every time you cast your lure. Well, it’s not a dream and interestingly its not that far away either.
I’ve known Dennis, ( Brazakka),Wallace for 27 years and we’ve been best mates since day one! Our families have grown together and often shared those special occasions ! From ‘ Santa’ landing in the chopper with his sack of pressies for our kids to watching him plant macadamia nut trees and tagging dear to release into high fenced paddocks. One thing is for sure, he’s an adventurer. One of those guys who says he’s going to do something and actually goes out there and does it! He has influenced me in many positive ways and we have shared some incredible fishing experiences…the latest one was a ‘classic’ and what made it all the more special was that it involved my son Matthew.
Cape York Peninsular is approx. 1,000 kilometres to its most northerly point from Cairns and covers an area about the size of England. What a playground! Brazakka has been exploring its spectacular waterways for almost 40 years and chartered / flown all sorts of characters to experience their ‘ultimate’ fishing adventures, from politicians to tradies to newspaper moguls. No matter who he’s with his level of enthusiasm for this pristine, unique part of our planet is the same...and he’s one of the best salesmen this Far Northern region of Queensland has ever had.

Late November is a sticky / hot time of year up in these parts. On a positive note it is also one of the best fishing times to venture out to the reef or fish rivers and estuaries. Brazakka had only to ask once if Matt and I were interested in a couple of days ‘up north’ to chase all manner of ‘tropical rogues’. You can guess my answer! So, after an early Monday morning start we headed north hugging the coast. Passing Port Douglas we skimmed over Snapper Island…then on to Cape Trib. , past Cooktown and into the wild blue! Signs of mans presence faded into oblivion as we entered some of the most remote untouched bush scapes this continent has to offer….I like to call it ‘Paradise Found’, with the sincere hope that it remains as we have found it!
Dugongs tamely feed on shallow sea grass beds oblivious to the sound of the choppers blades. Wild boar roam in mobs and barely flinch at our presence, so too the flocks of magpie geese feeding in vast swamplands. We see crocs….big fellas absorbing the suns rays as if to ‘recharge their batteries’, and dingoes prowl menacingly chasing any easy feed that comes their way. Like an open zoo this magnificent region would rival any African wildlife park…but with added greenery and so many waterways.
Looking for rivers to fish we knew it was still a run in tide, not the best time to be casting lures. To top it off it was a fairly big run in so bait would be scattered, as would the predators that usually follow them. Taking the time to find just the right spot Brazakka gave us the ‘Cooks tour’, pointing out the deeper holes that held the bigger fish, and the resident croc that patrolled his patch. We landed near a wide mouthed river with a deep gutter at its entrance and made our way through the thick mangroves to find the junction of a feeder creek.
Masses of mudcrabs scurried around in the swirling current all of which would have been easy prey if we had a landing net. Juvenile sharks sat facing into the current…hundreds of them as if they had just been conceived and were taking their first swimming lesson. We cast our F1.11 and Stealth lures across the junction of the feeder creek as 1.5 kilo size queenies latched on in quick time. Good fights and quick releases kept us in the swim with these voracious feeders, then the trevally moved in to see what the disturbance was all about. Changing to Rebel Pop R poppers we had a strike or hook up every cast….not big fish but insatiable appetites. It was soon time to leave as the tide began to slow and Brazakka had ideas where he wanted us to be for the run out.

The Robertson 44 Chopper is a beauty! It seats four, or 3 plus a heap of gear, has a piston engine so is quick to wind down and start up and can literally land on a twenty cent piece. In minutes we were flying over 1,000 feet and heading further north. Several stops and about 30 assorted jacks, trevally, queenies and tarpon later we settled at a major river mouth to fish the run out tide. Again we battled our way through wall to wall mangroves and re-tied our 40 lbs. twisted leaders that had been badly chaffed . We use an ‘Egg Clip’ , ( cross lock pattern), on the end of this double thickness leader and find them to be the best we have used for reliablility. I tied on a Manns Stretch 10+ minnow, Matt and Brazakka opted for Barra Classic 125mm. 10 foot divers. The first twenty minutes was slow and produced a couple of smaller estuary cod and a few tarpon in the 1 to 1.5 kilo bracket.
As the tide dropped the action began to go ‘ballistic’ as fish fought to claim every lure cast across the river. When we hooked one mangrove jack another 3 or 4 would follow to try and steal the lure from the hooked fish! Dozens of double and triple hookups followed as we were beaten up by ‘jacks in packs’ and the odd barra up to 70 cms. Lure fishing couldn’t be better than this and I was amazed when I hooked a good sized barra, played him for five minutes…then as he was on his last run a 1.7 kilo jack stole the lure out of his mouth and I beached the jack. How crazy is that? ( Brazakka managed to video this happening too).
When the bite slowed we changed lures .Rapala suspending X-Raps worked well, as did suspending Bombers and F.1.11 slow sinkers. Just a cast…..crank the lures down then a S L O W ‘twitch’….’twitch’….then BANG we were on again. Soft plastics were our next line of defence and the Squidgy Slick Baits did a top job of keeping the lads interested. My favourite softie was the Squidgy Stealth Prawn with a slow sinking head……amazing how fish would come back and ‘Whack’ these plastics time and time again until they were hooked.
Every fish was carefully released to fight another day, and by our reckoning we had released over 75 assorted species in just 2 hours. It doesn’t get better than that!
I could go on about the fantastic fishing the rest of that first day…..or the incredible rocky headland fishing the next day that saw us do battle with the mighty king salmon but my words would be repetitive. Let’s just say it was the trip of a lifetime, and, it was right here in FNQ. In my opinion we have the GREATEST Sportfishing on the planet, right here on our doorstep.
The record is of 400 kg, with frequent captures between 5 and 20 kg. In August 2003 a fisherman caught on Gheorghe branch a 117 kg specimen.
A fish without scales, the cat-fish prefers deep waters on Danube's branches.
The reproduction period – when fishing is forbidden – lasts from mid April till mid June. Immediately after reopening fishing in June and all the way to September you get the best results. The most frequently used bait in the Danube Delta is the black earth worm, but also the mole cricket, frog, live fish or heavy twisters have good results.
For a successful fishing party it is essential to know the fishing places. We know them, you have to bring the strongest fishing-rods and plenty line. You may need more than 200 m on the reel.
