Natural Food Dyes {Guest Post}

Hi! I’m Holly and I blog over at Back Home Again. Ashley has been so kind to let me guest post here today and I thought I would tell you about one of my adventures in natural food dyes.

A few weekends ago, I decided I would try out pink and purple, making pink and purple frosting for my daughter’s baptism cupcakes. Now I’ve used red and green before and they were easy so I figured pink and purple would be too. I had decided to use raspberries for my pink but I wasn’t sure what to use for purple. I know that you can use purple cabbage for purple, but since I was frosting cupcakes, I decided to use blackberries instead because I was afraid that there would be too much of a cabbage taste to my frosting.

I pureed about half of each container with 1/4c water in my Magic Bullet; then slowly mixed it in with white frosting until I got the color I desired. A food processor will work too, but I prefer the Magic Bullet because it’s less to put together and makes for easier clean up.

I will admit that I cheated a little because I was on a time crunch. Normally I would make my own frosting, but I used some I picked up at the store this time, which still worked well although I would recommend using buttercream and not the whipped kind if you go this route.

While the purple isn’t as pronounced as I would’ve liked, I think they turned out rather well! There was a hint of raspberry and blackberry flavor to each, which complimented the flavors of the cupcake (can you tell I watch a little too much of Cupcake Wars? Ha!).

Probably my favorite part of the whole process was that I froze the remaining puree for my daughter to eat later :-)

Definitely give making your own food coloring a try sometime. It’s a great way to add a natural bit of color in addition to the great nutrients you’re getting instead of artificial chemicals!

This is one of my favorite pictures of my Mom and I.

1~ My Biggest Cheerleader...my mom has always been my biggest fan and the first to encourage me to follow my dreams. She's been my workout partner for six months in the humid Alabama heat running 4 miles a day, my pushing coach through all three of my girls, and the loudest voice in the crowd cheering me on. All she needs is a air horn and pom poms.

2~ The Voice of Reason...she has always been right when it came to boyfriends and friendships. When I would bring home "Mr. Wrong" or "Mr. Right Now", she was always the one to break it to me that it wasn't going to last. Her opinion, whether asked for or not, has always been for my best interests. I have learned the hard way several times when not listening.

3~ The Woman I want to be...the older I get and the more I see my Moms influence in my day to day life. The way I raise my girls, treat my husband, and run my household is a direct reflection of how my Mom raised me. I hope that when my girls are my age they will be as honored to have me as their Mom as I am to have mine.

"Market In the Square" Every Saturday morning now thru the end of summer, you can find me at Cathedral Square in downtown Mobile shopping all the great local produce, handmade items, food, and plants. It's a great atmosphere to get the kids out and pets are welcome, so George is always in toe.

Weekend in the Square

After 5 days straight of rain and cold weather, the sunshine finally came out this weekend! Michael and I grab loaded up the kiddos/pup and went exploring in our new City. One of the great things about living in Mobile is that there are a ton of outdoor parks and squares. Everywhere you look in the downtown area you can find people lounging around, having picnics or just walking their pups.

We love taking the kids in the squares to run around, especially since we now live in a town-home and have a tiny outdoor space. There's nothing I hate more than being locked up indoors with the girls, so these trips are a welcome relief.

Michael and I have set ourselves a goal to try to eat at every place in the area. Of course this will take years, but I'm excited to try. This weekend we were sadly disappointed in the lunch we had at Heroes. I just don't understand how you can mess up a chicken salad sandwich.

With all the historic features in the area it makes for great photo opps.
I hope you all had a wonderful sunny weekend and got to enjoy the outdoors. I know I say a few pictures where it was still snowing....YUCK! Summer is coming and I can't wait to see all of the pictures from you guys adventures in exploring your City.

What do you hide in your Chicken Salad?

If the kids and hubs only knew what I put into there favorite Summer time lunch, they might not eat it.

It all started a few years ago when my husband bought me a cookbook

"Deceptively Delicious" by Jessica Seinfeld.

The concept of the book is all about how to hide fruits and veggies into everyday meals. After testing out a few recipes like these "Secret Ingredient Choc. Chip Cookies", I was hooked. Now it's kinda like a game to see what I can get them to eat, especially the hubs that doesn't like mushrooms yet they are in a ton of his dinners....LOL!

Chicken Salad is an easy food to start with...

I make all of mine based on taste and don't measure. I know this is an awful way to cook, but it works for me.

Basic Ingredients

chopped boiled chicken

mustard

relish

low fat plain yogurt or greek

onion

salt & pepper

Hidden Goodies

(these are just examples not the real recipe)

apples

grapes

raisins

chickpeas turkey bacon carrots boiled eggs steamed cauliflower broccoli

Justin Bieber- You are not usher, you will never be Justin Timberlake, and your hair is still a hot mess. Thank the heavens that my eleven year old finally grew out of her "Bieber" stage, now if the rest of the world would get with it.

In 151 days (September 28th) Cindy from NewlyWed Nutrition and I are going to be running the Women's Half Marathon in Nashville, TN.

Whether I'm running, walking, or crawling to the finish line I can't wait to mark this off my 30 before 30 bucket list. I'm starting to research training programs and can't wait to share the journey with you guys. Have you ever completed a half and do you have any tips?

Smoothie FAIL {Vlog}

Ok folks its Day 5 of the "7 Day Green Smoothie Challenge" and I swear I didn't put a cat in the blender. The picture was just to perfect to describe the mess that I made today. Its all my blogging BFF Ashlee from ABpetite fault, not really but she was my encouragement.

Back to what really happen....I decided to make my first and probably last all veggie smoothie. Unlike most normal people I don't like tomato juice, so making anything remotely close to v8 or a Blood Mary is never going to happen. What did happen was an epic FAIL that just for you lovely guys I recorded it.

Enjoy the video and I hope you get a good laugh to start your day!

Can you see the many places that I might have gone wrong with that mix...lol! If you must know I couldn't get it all down.

I Might Be a Frog By Day 7

Day 4 of the "7 Day Green Smoothie Challenge"..... between drinking the smoothies, eating a salad everyday for lunch and green veggies with dinner. I swear my skin has a green tint to it. I'm not complaining green is my favorite color, I feel great and have a ton of energy but man I've turned into a rabbit more so than usually this week.
Today I ended up taking the girls for smoothies at the Tropical Smoothie Cafe. I had an Island Green that was made with kale, spinach, mango, pineapple, and banana. With only 220 calories in whole huge cup I will defiantly be coming back for more.

The girls enjoyed their own Strawberry/Banana kiddo smoothies. I'm so blessed that they love to eat healthy as much as me....as if they had a choice! Is the challenge having the same effect on you? & If you are not participating do you ever find yourself eating a certain colored food more than usually?
