So you think you can collect a juicy fee from your state government for a few hours of shopping at the mall? Sorry, but that’s not how tax dollars are really spent.

Trash that $3,400 check from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. It may look like an authentic unemployment benefits check, bearing the official bank routing number used by that agency. But despite what an accompanying letter may say, there are no state-funded programs to be a “mystery shopper” at a local Sears or Wal-Mart or to wire thousands of dollars to London to evaluate Western Union’s service.

“These checks are being sent all over the U.S.,” says Jeff Hentschel, a spokesman for the Tennessee agency. “Just yesterday I got a call from someone in Illinois who received one.”

Credibility from the state capital

Official-looking checks that purport to be from government agencies are the latest bait in mystery shopping scams—a ruse that promises easy money if you’ll just visit local stores and restaurants and then evaluate prices and services.

The scam begins when a check arrives in your mailbox. You’re instructed to quickly deposit it in your bank account, then spend some of the money at a particular business, keep some for your “work” and wire transfer the lion’s share elsewhere, typically overseas (appraising service at MoneyGram or Western Union is part of your assignment, you’re told).

But the check is counterfeit—which can take your bank weeks to discover. No money enters your account, and you end up on the hook for everything you spent at the mall, and for what you wired overseas—to the scammers, of course.

Recently, at least 10 people tried to deposit bogus Tennessee unemployment checks, says Hentschel. “Consider that on average, we’re sending out about 150,000 unemployment checks each week. So there are a lot of checks out that can be modified.”

In a variation of the scheme, some scammers are sending out checks for $4,940 supposedly issued by the state of Maryland. They bear dead-on signatures of the state’s comptroller and treasurer. Such details lend a lot of credibility “in making people feel more secure in thinking they’re getting a valid state check,” says Joseph Shapiro of the office of the comptroller of Maryland. The checks were really sent by con artists in Canada.

How to protect yourself

Legitimate mystery shopper gigs do exist, and here’s what you can expect from them:

No upfront payment. “Shoppers usually get paid after the assignment is completed,” says Kelly Hancock, spokesperson for the Mystery Shopping Providers Association, whose 300-member companies hire shoppers for millions of undercover visits each year.

Payment of $8 to $20 per shop.

No instructions to complete a wire transfer overseas, where the money will be beyond the jurisdiction of U.S. law enforcement—likely never to be recovered.

Secret Shopper Scam

There are disreputable companies scamming shoppers. Some charge a fee for information on becoming a shopper. We do not and have never charged a shopper to affiliate with us. One of the latest and more serious we've heard about is a company sending out large advance cashiers checks. The shopper is told to send a MoneyGram or Western Union to a person in Canada, keeping part of the check for themselves. However, the check is not legitimate and bounces, leaving the shopper without any money to cover the MoneyGram. For more information, see FakeChecks.org.

Unfortunately, these companies use various web addresses of reputable companies like ours in their ads. Be assured that these practices have nothing to do with our company and our only interaction with shoppers is to pay them for legitimate shops done for us. We have been in business 16 years and are a charter member in good standing of the Mystery Shopping Provider's Association. You may check up on us with your local Better Business Bureau.

Unfortunately, these companies tend to disappear before anyone can find them and end the practices. If you have paid someone for information or to sign up, your first step might be to check your statement for whatever account was charged. The correct name of the company is often listed there. There are many companies with very similar names.

Shadow Shopper Scam Alert

We have received reports from various sources that an individual, group of individuals or business is posing as ShadowShopper and sending substantial checks in the mail along with a letter with the ShadowShopper logo on it. They ask you to cash the check, then send them a fee for "providing you with work." ShadowShopper is NOT sending out these letters or checks. They are completely false and the checks will bounce and you will be out any money you send them.

It is a Nigerian check scam ring pretending to be Shadowshopper. The scam is run out of Canada and the UK, and the check will bounce. Remember, ShadowShopper provides you with hundreds of job opportunities, and for your protection, we do it only via email and our website.

The nature of the internet is anonymous, so it makes since that if you are doing business online you would be nervous about whom you are dealing with. How do you know that “Stan Darsh” from Flatbush, Brooklyn, who is going to design website banners for you, but lost his password to your network isn’t actually a Nigerian Scammer who has phished Stan’s password and is just waiting to get his mitts on your corporate credit card? In the early days of the internet there was no way to know, but thanks to innovations in technology you no longer have to fear the anonymity of the internet when doing business.
Out of Band Authentication (OOBA) is a revolutionary process that allows you to verify that someone is who they really say they are by confirming multiple channels of communication that the person in question registers with a verification service beforehand. Let’s say you employ contract workers all over the United States that log into your secure virtual private network from their home offices. Now let’s say one of your employees, Stan Darsh, sends you an email from his personal email account telling you he can’t find his password anywhere and needs it to log into your company’s virtual private network (VPN) and finish his work. You’ve never talked to Stan before, you don’t know him personally and you have never seen his face, so how do you know this email is really from him at his home computer?

In case you didn’t know, there are people who scour the internet all day looking for vulnerabilities in people’s servers and VPN’s, trying to steal as much information they can get their hands on, especially financials. These people are the biggest caveat when it comes to doing business online, and you need to protect yourself from them.

When you use an Out of Band Authentication service your employees would register not only a trusted computer with a unique IP address, but also a trusted telephone number. So say it really is Stan who is locked out of your VPN, he logs into your pre-selected authentication service’s website and selects the “lost password” option. Stan’s computer sends an XML file from his personal (or corporate) server to an OOBA service, the OOBA service gets this file and dials Stan’s pre-registered phone number and sends an XML file back to Stan’s computer with a unique and randomly generated numeric code, Stan’s phone rings and he is prompted to enter the randomly generated numeric code into his phone. This verifies that Stan is in control of his trusted computer and his trusted phone line, thereby authenticating him as the actual user in question and allowing him to reset his password.

If scammers and phishers see that you use an Out of Band Authentication service they most likely won’t even try and get into your servers or network, they generally understand that you have multiple safety precautions in place to protect your network. If you do end up going with an OOBA service it is still important to remain vigilant when doing business online, but you can feel a lot more secure knowing you can’t verify someone’s identity easily and without doubt.

There is no question that you can make some good money with Home Business Opportunity - Google AdSense, but you’re setting yourself up for disaster if you make any of these Top 10 mistakes!

1. Do not use fake information when opening your Home Business Opportunity - Google AdSense account.

Google says that’s a no-no and they will cut your account off and keep all the money you may have earned. Besides, trying to hide your true identity can cause serious problems with the I.R.S. or whoever your tax authority is.

2. Do not hack or modify Home Business Opportunity - Google AdSense code other than to change the parameters that Google authorizes you to change.

Any attempt to bypass Google’s built-in algorithms not only poses a danger to the integrity of the network, but it threatens the financial modle that Google operates under. You’re not dealing with some Mom-and-Pop company here, and Google has the legal muscle and deep enough pockets to drag you through every court in the land if you damage their business with your hacking antics.

3. Keep AdSense ads off of your registration, confirmation, and all "thank you" pages.

Don’t ask me why you can’t put your ads there. It makes sense to me that those would be wonderful locations. Google thinks otherwise, however, and doing so is a hanging offense according to their Terms of Service.

4. Do not display AdSense ads and a competitor's ads (like Overture's) on the same page at the same time.

That just makes plain good sense. Google doesn’t demand 100% SITE loyalty from you, but they do insist that their own ads not be cluttered up by offerings from their competitors.

5. Don't "beg for clicks" or provide any incentive for clicking on your Home Business Opportunity - Google AdSense ads.

This is a biggie and you see this rule violated all the time. Any of the “get paid to do stuff” sites that put Google ads in the member’s control panels are walking the plank and they don’t even realize it. Even those sites with the polite little messages asking you to “help keep my site running by clicking on our sponsor’s ads” are asking to be cut off if those happen to be Google ads.

6. Never click on the ads running on your own site, even if you are genuinely interested in the product or service and are thinking of buying it!

Nothing screams FRAUD louder than a webmaster running up his or her own click counts by happily clicking on ads fromtheir own site. The Google Gods can track this activity and it won’t be long until you find yourself getting a goodbye note from their fraud team.

7. No misleading labeling

Google is very specific about what text can be placed around their ads. Their Terms of Service state: “Publishers may not label the ads with text other than ‘sponsored links’ or ‘advertisements.’ This includes any text directly above our ads that could be confused with, or attempt to be associated with Google ads.”

This is to keep visitors from becoming confused and barking up Google’s tree when they clicked on an ad that led to a porn site instead of the recipe site they were expecting to visit.

8. Avoid keyword spamming and other divisive tricks

You may be tempted to buy one of those “generates thousands of key-word rich pages in seconds” programs that are so popular these days but I’ll tell you this: Their days are numbered. Google is wise to such shenanigans and they will be hot on your trail. Other prohibited gimmicks include:

• ”Sneaky” page redirects that send a visitor off to a different site then they were expecting to visit.

• Multiple sites, domains, pages, etc. which have substantially duplicate content.

• Hidden text or links of any type.

• Excessive outbound links on any page. Google recommends no more than 100. I’d keep it way below that.

• And here is a nugget of wisdom straight from Google’s mouth: “Do not participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web as your website may be affected adversely by those links.

9. Don’t advertise anything on Google’s prohibited items list.

It’s a lot shorter lists than PayPal’s or eBay’s, but it includes a lot of the same stuff like hacking/cracking content, porn, illegal drugs, gambling sites, beer or hard alcohol (I guess wine is OK), weapons, and the other usual stuff.

10. And the 10th dumbest thing NOT to do with Home Business Opportunity - Google AdSense is to let the other nine things stop you from running an honest site that’s designed to make the most out of this very profitable opportunity that Google offers!

A Growing Industry

Medical Transcription/Billing is an industry that is exploding. It's prestigious and in demand. According the the U.S. Department of Labor, "Employment of medical transcriptionists is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2010. Demand for medical transcription services will be spurred by a growing and aging population."

Transcription is one of those jobs that many people know can be done from home, and so the interest level is very high. Unfortunately, there are many companies out there trying to capitalize on that interest. The results are over-priced and sub-standard courses.

This is what inspired me to research the field and determine what the options are for those who are looking to enter it.

What Do Transcriptionists Do?

Transcriptionists listen to dictated recordings made by physicians and other healthcare professionals and transcribe them into documents such as operating room notes, autopsy reports, discharge summaries and other documents which then become part of a patient's medical record. In order to be able to transcribe information accurately, medical transcriptionists must understand medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures, and treatment.

What Kind of Training Must MT's Have?

In the course of my research, the first thing I learned was that you can't just jump into a career as an MT without training. This is a detailed, professional (and fascinating) career which requires technical knowledge. The American Association for Medical Transcription defines the requirements this way:

"Medical understanding is critical for the professional medical transcriptionist. The complex terms used in medicine are unlike the language of any other profession.
Medical transcription requires a practical knowledge of medical language, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, laboratory medicine, and the internal organization of medical reports. A medical transcriptionist is truly a medical language specialist who must be aware of standards and requirements that apply to the health record, as well as the legal significance of medical transcripts.

Reports of patient care take many forms, including histories and physical examinations, progress reports, emergency room notes, consultations, operative reports, discharge summaries, clinic notes, referral letters, radiology reports, pathology reports, and an array of documentation spanning more than 60 medical specialties and subspecialties! Thus, the medical transcriptionist, or medical language specialist, must be well versed in the language of medicine. ".

Medical transcription is a medical language specialty, so you can see that it requires not only the proper training, but also an investment in reference materials and a commitment to ongoing learning as technology and terminology changes. Equally important to the long-term success of a Transcriptionist is having the right personality for the job. Some qualities that successful MT's share are:

Independent by nature
Word Specialist
Perfectionist
Detail oriented
It's also important to note that most companies require candidates for telecommute MT positions to have on-site experience- as is the case with most all telecommute jobs. In many cases, 2 years of experience working in a hospital or doctor's office is required. If this is a field that you are truly interested in, getting those 2 years under your belt and then being qualified to telecommute is a pretty good deal.

Training Options

The second thing I found was that there sure were a lot of courses out there. They ranged in price from a couple hundred dollars to a few thousand! I was overwhelmed! It was then that I realized that I would need some help. I found a great place where working MT's hang out and support each other.
