Hello, hello 👋🏼 Bet you thought you heard the last of me, but I'm back!

As 2022 begins, I'm eager to be more intentional. I'm not a fan of resolutions, but I am a fan of finding time to reflect and reset. Whether that's January 1st, May 27th or any other day of the year for that matter.

So since then, I've been doing some wild things like reading more non-fiction (gross), waking up earlier (who am I??) and journaling every morning. flatlines

I've almost been at my current company for four years now, and goddamn has it flown by. When I reflect back over this time, while there's certainly a lot I'm grateful for, there's a small part of me that regrets not finding the time to keep up with this corner of the universe.

Which brings me here. Breathing a little life back into this humble, quirky blog.

Things will certainly be a little different this time around, but for my single reader out there (Hi, Kayleigh!), if nothing else there will be content.

Spring Sundress in Brooklyn

Happy Memorial Day weekend! I hope you're having a wonderful weekend full of plenty of rest + relaxation. We had a little rain in NYC today but it's shaping up to be bright and sunny from here on out. Hoping to even escape for a bike ride around Brooklyn at some point.

Last weekend, after a very anxiety filled internal debate, I rode a city bike to my sister's place in the Upper East Side (where we responsibly distanced in their backyard). It was a bit of a trek, but since then I've been itching to see what other parts of the city I can explore on two wheels. (Pro Tip: Lyft makes it so easy to rent city bikes. It takes something like 30 seconds from start to finish. Wild.) After being cooped up for two months now, we've been trying to find responsible ways to still enjoy the city and get out for a bit.

Which leads me to today's post! A few weekends ago, on a gloriously sunny afternoon, we set out to take advantage of the only outdoor space we have: The fire escape. I mistakenly referred to this as our "balcony" during a book club meeting -- if only. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I'd still like to add an outdoor cushion or something to make reading out there a bit comfier, but for now it's a good spot to get in a few chapters, have an impromptu photo shoot or simply hangout.

I snagged this adorable sundress from TJMaxx right before my sister's bachelorette trip in Napa (more on that soon), but was able to find it for you here! It's supposed to hit at mid-length, but at 5.1 it hits me where a normal maxi should. I still love the look, but something to keep in mind you decide to pick it up.

Anywho, as I'm sure you guessed, I had no where special to go that day. But simply dressing up and getting fresh air made for a lovely afternoon.

Positive Thoughts Only

Hi there and happy Sunday! 👋🏼 It's been a while since I've posted last and with everything going on in the world, I thought this would be a good opportunity to stay more in touch with others and stretch my creative muscles once again.

I'm not alone when I say things have been a bit rocky lately. All of the recent changes and uncertainty has been amplified by the serious state New York City - my home - finds itself in. I'd be lying if I said I haven't contemplated an escape plan or day dreamed of being in an house over a one bedroom apartment with a fire escape for outdoor space. It's so easy to focus on worst case scenarios and panic each time a siren sounds. But amidst all of the chaos, I've found myself blessed with supportive loved ones who help me stay positive and make each day beautiful in it's own way.

I've also found it's important now more than ever to prioritize things that make you happy. So in celebration of the small joys of life, here's a list of things I've found keep the negative thoughts at bay and help me destress after a tough day (or week).

Herbal Tea
For the past few month's I've slowly started to switch to exclusively drinking herbal tea. The Republic of Tea has a beautiful array of unique herbals to choose from. If you're feeling stressed or having difficulty falling asleep, would definitely recommend Get Relaxed or Beauty Sleep. Nothing beats sipping deliciously warm tea to unwind and this small bit of comfort has made a world of difference.

Face Masks
When I think of relaxation and self care, face masks come to front of mind -- who's surprised. The Sephora sheet masks have historically been my go to. They're relaxing, have great benefits for your skin, and silly to wear with friends and family. Nothing kills stress better than laughing with loved ones because you all look absolutely ridiculous. If sheet masks aren't your thing, I've also started using sleeping masks. Glow Recipe's Watermelon + Avocado masks -- 10/10.

Yoga + Running
There are a ton of apps giving free memberships while we're all cooped up. Right now the Down Dog app is giving free access until May 1st. This was a huge game changer for me. When I'm tense from sitting in front of my computer all day, a 20 minute yoga sesh is the perfect way to clear my mind, get the blood pumping and just reset. And for days you need something more, a long run through the neighborhood is just what the doctored order.

Puzzles
I am a sucker for puzzles. Have been as long as I can remember. And I am not alone. The amount of people posting pictures of puzzles on social media has skyrocketed in the last few weeks. If you want to take a break from the screens and concentrate on a challenge, Barnes and Noble has so. many. options. Last weekend I finished a 1000 piece puzzle in two days. 👀 Think I need stock up on a few more...

Nancy Drew Games
Okay, hear me out. I know this last one definitely shows off my geeky side, but I've been obsessed with Nancy Drew games for as long as I can remember. If you like mysteries and want a challenge, would 100% recommend downloading one of these games. It's a running joke in my family that we can't beat a single game without looking up some of the answers, but that's because these games are challenging. See if you can beat them without any hints - bet you you can't! In the past few months, I've played Ghost of Thornton Hall, The Silent Spy and Labyrinth of Lies. Currently on Alibi in Ashes - but there all such good games. Pick any one of them. You can't go wrong.

Travel Guide: Bermuda

Gooood morning! It has been a very hot few days here in the Big Apple. So much so, half of the city had a power outage last weekend. Now, I know some may think that Astoria is not the most glamorous neighborhood, but when it's 90 degrees and your AC is still kicking it makes me very grateful for my small corner of the universe.

Be that as it may, it's still hot. Very hot. So while I'm doing all I can to beat the heat, I can't help but day dream of this perfect little island. I've rounded up all my favorite photos above + detailed everything you need to know below.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Late spring / early summer is the perfect time to take a trip to the island of Bermuda. However, which month you visit during that timeframe depends on what you'd like to do. March and April are great for travelers who want the most bang for their buck. The water is still on the cold side, so if you're not much of a swimmer and want to save a little these months would be perfect. We visited at the end of May - still not in full summer heat + tourist hub, but warm enough to go swimming whenever. If you visit during the summer, be prepared for a lot of heat and even more humidity.

WHERE TO EAT

Mickey's Beach Bar & Bistro: After a long day of lounging in the sand or hour long photoshoots, Mickey's is the perfect spot to refuel. This restaurant is right on Elbow Beach - no travel necessary. Not only is it perfectly located, but their food is also ah-mazing and seriously hits the spot. Be sure to snag a pitcher for the table - or yourself.

Blu Bar & Grill: While on the island, we knew there was one night we wanted to treat ourselves to a nice dinner and immediately our hosts recommended Blu. This spot is on the pricey side, but worth every penny! If you find yourself here you have to try the soufflé. We ordered both flavors - the chocolate and the lemon - but I can't honestly decide which one is better. They're both so mouth-watering. If you find yourself in Bermuda and don't try at least one of these soufflés, you're truly doing yourself a disservice.

The Swizzle Inn: The Swizzle Inn is the oldest pub on the island and home to their national drink, the Rum Swizzle. I - like many fun loving tourists - really strive for the immersive, cultural experience and therefore had to take a trip (or two) to The Swizzle Inn for their signature cocktail. Again, pitchers are always encouraged.

Bailey's Ice Cream Parlour: If you happen to be at The Swizzle Inn or have just finished kayaking or even cave diving (see below), Bailey's Ice Cream is a must. I couldn't image a vacation without freshly scooped ice cream and this place delivers. The pistachio inspired parlour with it's retro decor is photo ready, making it the perfect spot to snap a few pictures as your ice cream melts all over your hand. #insta

WHAT TO DO

Elbow Beach: Beaches here are the most beautiful I've ever seen. The stretches of gorgeous pink sand and sparkling blue waters really can't be beat. Almost all of the beach pictures above were taken at EB. Absolutely stunning and surprisingly quiet. If you're planning a trip to Bermuda make sure to pencil in Elbow Beach at least once.

Downtown Hamilton: Downtown Hamilton isn't too big, so it's easy to cover everything you want to see in one outing. I would recommend starting at the Princess Hotel (bright pink - can't miss it) exploring their gorgeous back terrace and then walking the length of downtown. You'll pass plenty of quaint boutiques, restaurants and a very delicious cafe. It was helpful to walk the length of downtown and scope everything out before deciding what to do next. Oh, and as always, plenty of photos ops.

Horseshoe Bay: This was another great spot for a beach day. It's a bit more crowded than Elbow Beach, but you should certainly take the trip there at least once. We did a bit of exploring and found a path that led to a rocky outlook with beautiful vistas.

Gibbs Hill Lighthouse: Another adorably quaint spot on the island. We visited this lighthouse with the family who hosted us and it was so sweet to hike up to the top with the kiddos. Granted, even if you don't have a similar experience, the views are stunning and 100% worth the 185 steps to the top. With panoramic views, you can see the entire length of the 22 mile island.

Crystal Caves: Another activity that should not be passed over should you visit this beautiful island is exploring Crystal Caves. Yes, it was a little nerve wracking to be that far underground with stalactites - some thought to be millions of years old - hanging above your head. After the initial nerves wear off, though, it's a truly amazing experience. One of the caves was found by two teenagers back in 1907. They saw a hole in the ground and naturally thought "Ah, yes. Let's repel ourselves into darkness and then go for a swim in unknown waters." Did I mention is was pitch black when they found it because, well, it's a cave??

Tom Moore's Jungle: Tom Moore's Jungle is an excellent spot to explore the more secluded parts of the island. Sure, there are plenty of spots for more beautiful vistas within the reserve and even a ledge to dive into clear blue waters, but venturing down one of the sheltered, canopy lined paths is a "must take", completely different experience.

Kayaking: I love any excuse to be on the water and kayaking was a great way to explore hidden alcoves and secluded beaches around the island. We were only out for an hour or so, but if you make more of a day be sure to check out the coral reefs and dotted shipwrecks that surround the island. Warning: This is quite the workout and really sneaks up on your towards the end of your trip. You will feel it the next day.

Summer Concert Series: While there are plenty of spots on the island to listen to live music, Sea Breeze Lounge hosts The Big Chill every summer on Saturday nights. We were particularly drawn to Elbow Beach and the Sea Breeze Lounge is conveniently located above Mikey's Beach Bar & Bistro (see above). This weekly series attracts both tourists and locals alike. The Big Chills lineup is pretty solid. They have their own rendition of Havana, by Camila Cabello which we could not get out of heads for the remainder of the trip.

WHAT TO PACK

Bermuda is perfect for all easy, breezy and bright outfits, so keep that in mind while packing. You'll definitely want more practical clothes if you plan to explore the Tom's jungle or go kayaking. I think I wore heals once on the trip and that was when we went out for dinner at Blu. TBH, you're better of leaving those at home. I all but lived in comfortable sandals this tip. Do be sure to bring a cardigan or light jacket, as it gets chilly at night - especially if you go in the earlier months. And seriously Do. Not. Forget. Sunscreen. I wore three layers at all times. The sun on the island is no joke. Lastly, Bermudians accept USD - which is great if you want to avoid bank fees for international travel. If you happen to be traveling from the US, would recommend taking some cash out. Will truly save you time and money once you get there.

Overall, this was a vacation for the books. I could not recommend visiting more. The only caveat I have is that it is on the pricy side and even if you find an inexpensive spot to stay, you can rack up a bill pretty fast with all the taxis needed to get around. Definitely prepare for that going in and just spend some time saving up beforehand. And while it is quite the romantic spot, I would recommend going with friends. We had such a fun girls' trip - exploring the island, catching up on much needed relaxation and of course taking plenty of pictures along the way. Athleisure Wedges

Hi friends & welcome back! If you follow me on Twitter, you may have seen that last week I ran a casual 10 miles. Long story short: I was about to finish my normal route when I was almost hit by a car, cursed out said car and then (like any sane person) decided to keep running. I was 100% not prepared to run almost twice what I normally do and was unbelievably sore for the rest of that week. The kind of sore where you need physical support walking down steps and then spend the rest of your night shuffling around your apartment groaning like a 85 year old man. Why am I telling you this quirky, but otherwise unrelated story? Since I certainly couldn't run again for a few day, I was able to spend my nights planning and writing! A la, this post.

The world works in mysterious ways... Anyway, now on to the good stuff!

My newest obsession is pictured below. This wedge / sneaker dreamboat gives me life. While that might seem a bit dramatic, a coworker of mine has a similar pair and ever since I first saw hers, I knew I wouldn't rest until I owned a pair myself. Then, after months of waiting - like a sign from God - Steve Madden was having a sale. I knew it was meant to be.

This style screams New York - so chic and effortless. It has an athleisure feel to them (obvs - as they're a sneaker wedge 🙈), but even so, they instantly elevate any outfit without calling too much attention. Perfect to pair with a dress for date night or leggings for all the other days you just want to be comfortable.

Favorite NYC Coffee Shops

Hello there! I don't know about you, but I am quite chilled atm. January is not my favorite month for weather, so as a mental remedy, we're talking coffee today. Specifically, my favorite coffee shops in NYC.

Since moving to the city, coffee shops have been the backdrop to many events. Whether it was mentally preparing for an interview in 20 minutes, seeking refuge from a downpour, catching up a friend or simply enjoying a few precious moments of rest, I've found myself in many coffee shops since that fateful August day.

Queens Room
It should be no surprise that I absolutely have to start this list at the heart of my stomping ground - Astoria. If you've never heard of it, you have now! Astoria is an adorable, yet hip section of Queens - most recently famous for the mysterious blue light that appeared back in December. Any who, we start our list out in Queens Room & I have more than one excuse to visit this lovely spot. In the morning and afternoon hours, you'll find most patrons sipping coffee and working on laptops. Typical coffee shop vibes. After dark, though, most are sipping wine or enjoying one of their monarch inspired cocktails. I'm partial because of how close it is to my apartment, but it's an adorable spot if you need some inspiration while writing or if you're on a ~casual~ date.

Martha's Country Bakery
Martha's is fairly well known here in NYC with a few different locations in Queens and Brooklyn. I feel this goes without saying, but my favorite is there Astoria location. While it isn't their original location, the Astoria MCB was where my roommate Madrid and I shared a light lunch after viewing our now apartment. It was an absolutely exhausting day running all over Astoria viewing a bunch of extremely different apartments. After literal hours of walking we finally found our corner of the universe and solidified plans to sign in this very coffee shop. Besides the sappy, sentimental stuff, they also have a dangerous amount of delicious desserts. Sharing an eclair and sipping a cappuccino is such a relaxing way to spend an hour. The sugar rush makes me even more chatty than usual, so I refrain from suggesting any first dates here.

Think Coffee
I've only been to the location on Mercer, but they have shops all over the city. I stumbled on Think while I was out with the sister last March and have enjoyed every trip back since. This particular location definitely has college vibes. Most likely due to it's proximity to NYU. While I don't attend classes anymore, this spot really makes me rethink applying for grad school.. I could sit in here and read for hours!

Ground Support
I absolutely love how witty this name is! If I'm being honest, it's entirely the reason I first stopped in. Sure the coffee is delicious and the prosciutto sandwich gives me life, but I come back for this spot's unique personality. My favorite thing about GS you ask? Oddly enough, their Instagram. Although, maybe it won't seem odd once you check it out. It's not what you're expecting, but everything you need. You won't be disappointed.

Optimistic Cafe
This cafe is SO freakin' cute. I shot one of my favorite Insta Story photos here while warming myself from the cold - also last March. An eventful month for coffee discoveries, I suppose. It's pretty cozy in this particular cafe, so you may have difficulty finding a place to sit if you'd like to stay a while. If it's a grab and go, make sure to snap a photo or two in front of their faux vines.

The Coffee Inn
Located in the Upper East Side, this tiny shop is great to refuel during a day of adventures. It's only a few avenues away from Central Park and even closer to arguably the best TJ Maxx around (the real reason I venture to the UES). It's also conveniently located near my sister's place. It's like they always say, "location, location, location".

Ange Noir Cafe
Last, but certainly not least, we have Ange Noir Cafe. The name itself means Black Angel and the interior reflects a very gothic noir vibe. Sounds odd - for sure, but it's really well done. I went there for brunch a few weekends ago and had one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've eaten in a while. There weren't any bells and whistles and I certainly wouldn't say the food is Insta worthy - at least from a photogenic standpoint - but wow is it good. Right around the corner you'll find Beacon's Closet, a fun, hip thrift store. I found a retro Pitt hat in there and couldn't believe it! Even Brooklyn hails.

I know I have absolutely missed a bunch of great spots. My roommate Kayleigh loves QWNS Cafe in Astoria, Grace Street in K-Town and Bluestone Lane in the West Village, so I already have a few on my list of spots I need to check out. It's safe to say I'm obsessed with coffee shops. Where should I head to next??

Keanu Reeves + my zero chill

Hey fam, welcome back! While I love fashion, photo shoots and the like, today I'm going to take a moment to tell one of my favorite stories since moving to NYC. Celebrities are just like you and me, right? They eat, sleep, shop and usually own joggers. While it was not by any means the reason why I moved to the big city, I would be lying if I said a celebrity sighting wasn't a pleasant side-effect of dealing with increased daily anxiety.

One of my favorite NYC stories to date is the story of my fateful run in with Keanu Reeves. Yes, you read that correctly, I PHYSICALLY ran into one of the most famous actors in the entire world-- Keanu Reeves! (Sorry--reelin' it in, guys.) It all started when a co-worker of mine invited me to go out for seafood. A large group had decided to get together and make an evening of it. I remember walking to the train station thinking to myself, "Every time I leave the apartment, something eventful always happens"...

When I finally arrived at the restaurant, a few of my friends were at the bar having a drink, waiting for the late-comers. We chit chatted about nothing in particular-- venting about work, the commute, life-- typical things. When everyone finally arrived and we were ready to be seated, I proceeded to go last for some reason and, being the vertically challenged individual that I am, was easily overlooked. Quite literally. So, I'm making my way past the bar patrons when a gentleman had the audacity to back into me!

My initial thought, once I found my bearings, was that I had just run into someone very wealthy, very influential or both. He had that 'effortlessly important, also trying to hide it, but being extremely obvious nonetheless' look about him. Anyway, so this hotshot backs into me and being the mid-western gal that I am, immediately said/sung my favorite word, "ope!". I paused for (what I hope was) a second while I took him in, then proceeded to do this weird 'bow, one foot out, gesturing him forward' thing and stated "after you, sir" in the WORST BRITISH ACCENT IMAGINABLE.

I am historically excellent under pressure.

Back Story: There are only a few celebrities who can ruffle my feathers if I run into them. The only celeb that would really throw me off is John Mulaney. But I would give my left kidney to him if he needed it, so it's a deep-seated, one-sided love affair and that's all I'm at liberty to say. Anyway, I don't like to be that fan girl. I'd rather have a conversation with whomever it happens to be and treat them just like any one else. My intent with this particular gentleman was to be my usual derpy self.

Clearly, I took the whole "act natural" thing too far.

The best part of this whole interaction was that I could see his thoughts travel across his face. When he first turned around he was on guard and accessed me immediately. He then went from ready to throw down to completely unconcerned in .06 seconds. "Oh, just some small human with zero coordination or social skills." Pretty fast turn around, if you ask me.

After holding eye contact for what felt like an eternity, I saw him realize that I had no idea who he was and then I knew, that he knew, that I had no idea who he was. He politely smiled at me, put his hand on the SMALL OF MY BACK and said, "no, no after you".

Here was my opportunity to gain a little ground from my awkward beginning.

Great-- Excellent! I had finished my first interaction with an important NYC person unscathed. I could feel him looking after me and was strutting my most confident walk. Heals tapping without falter, back straight, hair curled and flipped. NAILED IT. Until, oh god, oh no. What?! THERES A STEP?!

(just kidding, only one glass)

In my head, I'm still not too worried about it. "Whatever, he'll probably forget in five minutes and I have no idea who he is, anyway." I was nurturing my *slightly* bruised ego back to health when I heard commotion at the table. Hushed whispers. Backs turning. Necks craning. "Aaron, what's going on?" "Dude, Keanu Reeves is at the bar. Been here the whole time!"

My New York City Adventure

Hello everyone and welcome back to the Rachel Lynn Blog! Wow, does it seem like an eternity since I posted last. You all have been such a wonderful support system and have seriously made this move and transition to the big city more manageable. So, today's post is going to be story time-- a little (relatively speaking) recap of what I've been up to the past few months.

A year ago last month, I decided to move to New York City. I was in an odd transition period of my life and wanted to do something I had been too scared to even contemplate before. It was finally time to chase my dream and move to the city that had stolen my heart years before. (I talked a lot about that time in my life HERE if you want to read more about it!) That decision was the easiest part of the whole process. After my heart was set, we had to actually find a place to live...

Oh. My. God. Finding an apartment in New York City was the most stressful process I've ever experienced. When I was in college, if you didn't have a lease signed at least six months in advance, you were probably screwed.. or living with random people. I started searching for apartments as soon as I decided to move and was laughed at by every broker/ owner I spoke with. There wasn't a single landlord willing to sign a lease for even a month in advance. In theory, it makes sense. There are so many people who are looking for housing in the city, they could have that apartment filled in a week. No way they want it sitting for a few months while you wait for your current lease to end.

As much as I wanted things set in stone well in advance, there was no way that was possible. We planned to move in August, so come July we were finally able to start looking at apartments. One of my roommates and I took a few days off work and looked at almost 20 apartments in two days. TWENTY APARTMENTS IN TWO DAYS. We walked all over Harlem and then all over Astoria (the most adorable neighborhood, btw) in search of our future home. On the last day we were able to look at apartments, we made a last ditch effort to schedule viewings. As we were walking to the subway, the two of us were furiously calling brokers.

Up until that point, we had a few options, but none that truly felt like home. The last apartment we looked at on that fateful day was the one. People always say you just know when something is right. I never thought it was true until that day. There was just something about that apartment. I knew it was ours and made no attempts to hide how badly I wanted it. That day-- two weeks before I was supposed to move-- we met with the landlord and started the application process.

Two weeks, guys!

After that, I packed up everything I could fit in my brother's truck, left behind anything I couldn't and set off with our two little kittens. Off to take on the big city.

Since then it's been a whirlwind of applying for jobs, interviewing, networking and acclimating. Career wise, I could not have made a better decision. I've had countless interviews, met with amazing start up companies, sat down and picked apart a CEO's brain and overall found a clearer sense of where I want to take my job search. I've had to work a lot harder to stand out and make an impression, but I've found that to be so much more rewarding.

Even better, though, all of my interviews here have centered almost entirely around my blog and the work I've done with it! Not only discussing my personal blog at a professional level, but impressing interviewers with my experience enough for them to invite me back has been such a pivotal moment in my job search. It meant the world to hear that the past few years I had spent growing my blog and putting my heart and soul into it has led to more than just a hobby, but a potential career. The writing opportunities here are absolutely phenomenal and I know in the long run this was the best move I could have made!

And, of course, I would be remiss if I didn't talk about actually living in NYC. One of the things I absolutely love about the city and miss every time I leave is the independence I feel. The first week or so was a nightmare trying to navigate the subway system. I missed meetings, was late almost all of the time and had to Uber to my final destination because I had no idea where I was on MORE than one occasion. I even started doing this fun thing where after a week or so I would have way too much confidence in myself, walk 15 minutes in one direction, only to check my phone and realize I'd been headed in the wrong direction the whole time. That was one night I don't ever want to repeat. 🙄

Once I mastered* the subway system, I felt that I could conquer the world. Whenever I go back home or go back to Pittsburgh to visit, I constantly feel like I have to rely on someone else, whether it's friends or Ubers to get around and miss being able to rely on myself to get around. Now, in all fairness, I've been stuck underground, delayed, or have mentally freaked out in trains my fair share, so it's not perfect by any means, but it still feels good to have the confidence to get wherever I need to be with some amount of ease.

*One never fully masters the subway system. It simply lets you believe you have an understanding of it.

Everyone says New York City is the city of opportunity-- a place where anything can happen. They were not kidding, let me tell you! I love the thrill of leaving my apartment on a day off and expecting everything and nothing at the same time. I could head into the city, sit at a coffee shop to do work and simply enjoy the experience. Have nothing extraordinary happen, but still be able to revel in the experience-- still be inspired by the city and it's people. Or, on the other hand, I could leave my apartment, expect nothing and somehow stumble into an amazing experience I never planned for.

As much as I love running into the occasional celebrity (Oh, yes. There will be an entire post on just that experience.) and hanging out in speakeasies (Of course, I will be writing about this, too!), my favorite New York experience has been singing in bars. And not karaoke, either! An accompanist and you. If you know me, you know how much I love to sing. It's hard not to find me humming along to some tune or another. A friend of mine found out I can carry a tune and has been on a mission ever since to take me to bars with live music.

These spontaneous trips always turn into him "coercing" me to sing at the piano and I would always, without fail, freak out beforehand. "I have nothing prepared. I haven't really practiced in years! I didn't warm up. I'm going to sound horrible!" And a whole litany of other excuses. We'd start by standing in the back, listening to everyone else take their turn, while I wished I had the courage to do it myself. Slowly but surely, I'd inch closer to the piano and "nonchalantly" make eye contact with the pianist until he asked if I wanted to take a shot at it.

The first few notes my voice always shakes, but I will never loose the performer's part of me and I always find my footing. There's such a wonderful moment, when you forget to be scared and just enjoy it-- when you let yourself have fun and sing your heart out, connecting with those around you. Everyone there is always so supportive, too. I've even had a complete stranger quietly sing the harmony in support. Just listening to two strangers, who will probably never meet again, vocally support each other and create such a beautiful space gives me such LIFE.

Now don't get me wrong, things have not been all fun and games. Every day I have to work and really put in the effort. I could never say it's been easy. There have been plenty of nights I've cried in the subway or been genuinely lost as far as where I should take my life next. I had an HR coordinator tell me to my face I wouldn't make it because I don't have the "city instinct" and I've been so close to finally landing my dream job, only to have it slip away over the slightest technicality. Living in this wonderfully crazy city means that I have to wrestle with these facts everyday and make the conscious effort to push through. I've decided to fight for what I want and by doing that I've learned more about myself in this past year than had the past 23 others.

It's definitely a work in progress, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Last Minute Halloween Costume ft the Remington Flat Iron

Hey, everyone! I hope you all are having a very spoooky Halloween! I don’t know about you, but every Halloween season I scroll through Instagram and Pinterest looking for that perfect costume. I envision intricate makeup, crazy hair and the perfect outfit to top it all off. Something crazy and super unique. Every year, though, around this time I find myself freaking out because I am a Grade A Procrastinator and don’t have nearly the same amount of talent or creativity as some of these women. My go-to Halloween costume, in these instances, is a Pop-Art character.

Last year, I literally got the face paint two hours before a Halloween party I was attending and had the whole thing finished before any guests started to arrive. This costume will never let you down. Today, I'll be creating the Pop-Art character courtesy of my Remington Pro 1" Flat Iron with SmartPro Sensor Technology.

First off, how freakin’ cool does that sound?! This product certainly lives up to the hype, too. The idea behind this styling tool is that everyone’s hair is unique—naturally. The fun part of about this product is that it adjusts to your hair and its specific moisture (whaa?!) to keep your hair smooth, healthy and damage-free. I don’t know about you guys, but my mother was always on my case in high school about protecting my hair from heat products. My hair is on the thinner side as it is, so I really do have to be careful when it comes to the styling tools I use. To have a product smart enough to adjust to my particular hair type is a serious game changer!

Now, I know you’re dying to see this baby in action, so, in honor of the Smart Pro release and the spooookiest time of year, I’ll be showing you my go-to last minute Halloween look featuring the Pro 1” Flat Iron.

What I use:

· Remington Pro 1” Flat Iron with SmartPro Sensor Technology

· Something resembling a stereotypical high school uniform

· Black, white and blue face paint.

· A bold lip color (preferably red)

For this costume, you can honestly go anyway you like dress wise. When I think of Pop-Art I envision comic book characters in a high school, so when I bring this concept to life I always dress reminiscent of this. You really can take whatever route you'd like, though. The central focus is your makeup. Before we jump into makeup, I always start with my hair. I don’t know about you, but I am the worst at ruining makeup. I always forget I have costume makeup on and end up wiping my face or rubbing me eyes. I don't want to ruin my makeup trying to mess around with my hair, so I always do this first. Plus, it helps to visualize where to put your actual makeup, since the hair is already in place. Straightening hair is pretty straight forward, just make sure you don't have one wavy strand admits a sea of pin straight hair. 'Ain't nobody got time for that!

Pro tip: Style your hair away from your face. This way you don’t have to worry about hair getting into your face paint, or stuck in your lipstick or otherwise being a nuisance and ruining all of your hard work! Today, I’m opting for pigtails. Pigtails scream Pop-Art to me.

Now, on to the makeup!

I always start by outlining my face and filling in my eyebrows. You want to make sure your eyebrows are as dark and obnoxious as possible to really bring home the effect. When outlining, accentuate your jaw line, cheek bone, nose, mouth and hairline. I usually bring the effect down my neck and on the upper part of my chest, depending on the shirt I opt to wear. This year, I only drew on one of my cheek bones to mix things up a bit. This is your time to get creative!

Then, fill in your lips with a bright color, preferably red, and start the arduous process of 'dotting' your face. This is by far the longest part of this process, but it really isn't that bad and flies by if you've got some spooooky music bumpin'.

And now the tricky part. Last year I went with more of a blob tear drop, but it didn't quite translate how I was hoping it would. This year, I opted for two smaller tear drops and one larger one. I l.o.v.e. how it turned out! I would recommend outlining with a more precise instrument. I actually used my liquid eyeliner and it worked like a charm. Fill in the drops with blue face paint and you're good to go!

There you have it! A dramatic teenager straight out of the comic books themselves. Please send chocolate, The Notebook and as many tissues as you can find. This girl is going to need them! (Seriously, why can't I trick or treat at the age of 24?!? I enjoy candy. I enjoy long walks in the dark and running up to strange houses. Someone needs to change this societal norm.)

Fall Adventures in New York City ft. Remington

Hey, everyone! I know fall has officially started, but here in the Big Apple it's still ridiculously hot. I'm talking '86 degrees' hot. It probably has something to do with all of the tall, metal buildings, but either way, there is no way I've been able to dress in sweaters and scarves. So, I've had to get creative with my fall inspired outfits. By creative, I mean outfits involving burgundy...and a lot of it.

If you've stuck around here long enough, you know I never curl my hair without my Remington TStudio Thermaluxe Curling Wand. These curls are seriously my favorite. Ask any of my friends! Whenever I curl my hair, I use this wand. So there's no surprise it's my go-to fall curling wand of choice. Your girl knows what she likes.

Grand Central Station

The first stop on our fall adventure was Grand Central Station. We had a few errands to run in the area and naturally had to take a second for a photo -op. We were literally racing down the steps, on the way to catch the subway, when we (and by 'we' I mean my roommate, Kayleigh) realized how perfect of a place this was for pictures. I've raced past this spot several times, without even taking a second's thought, but there's a reason why so many movies and scenes are set in this beautiful space. Take Gossip Girl! The opening, iconic scene with Serena was filmed in this beautiful space.

Through the humidity of the subway and the rush of the crowd, those curls still manage to bounce back!

When a New Yorker, young or old, has somewhere to be, there's zero chance little 'ole me with my iPhone is going to hold them up.

DŌ, Cookie Dough Confections

After our detour at Grand Central Station, we quickly made our way to the wonderful world of Dō. For those of you who haven't heard of this magical place (featured thousands of times on INSIDER videos), it's an ice cream-esque parlor. Plot twist: instead of ice cream, they serve cookie dough. (You definitely didn't see that one coming.) They have flavors ranging from birthday cake to snickers to brownie batter -- YES, BROWNIE BATTER. To top it all off (or hold it all up), they have pink vanilla flavored cones.

Fam, if you ever find yourself in New York City and you enjoy the taste of cookie dough, but your mother always warned you against eating the entire batter raw (weird.), go to dō. Dō it. The only caveat is that it's crazy busy on the weekends. Are you shocked? People like cookie dough. A lot.

PRO TIP: Go on a weekday. Avoid the weekends. The line does, indeed, stretch across the street and down the block.

Washington Square Park
For the longest time, I had no idea that Washington Square Park existed. I knew there was a mysterious place somewhere in Manhattan that housed a beautiful triumphal arch and that Hilary Rushford took the most ADORABLE blog pictures at this location, but that's pretty much all I knew about it. In fact, it was only last weekend while I was exploring the city with my friend that we stumbled upon this wondrous place. As soon as you walk in there were performers everywhere. We grabbed the nearest bench and listened too all of the different sounds as twilight turned into nightfall. NYU's campus does happen to be right around the corner.

On this particular day fall day, though, we were milling about with at least a hundred other people. Someone somewhere was making those huge bubbles, which floated lazily into the sky. My roommates and I were admiring one that had wandered close to us when an angry man in a suit went out of his way to stomp by, kick out his foot and POP THE BUBBLE right in front of our eyes. Swear to God, I about to take a picture of the bubble when this man stormed over! The only proof I have of the beloved bubble's short life is a picture with the bottom half of his leg. New Yorkers, man.

In commemoration of every blogger in NYC ever, we decided to have a photo shoot. For the most part it was us, trying to figure out what to do with our hands while looking off in the distance or smizing at the camera, inadvertently entertaining every onlooker in the area. Professionals all the way. I don't know the exact idea I had in my head of what it would be like to have a photo shoot in the park, but I definitely hadn't envisioned a bright orange construction vehicle as the unsung hero of the day. Life is mysterious.

I don't know how it's possible, but I think my hair looks even better when it's up in a pony tail.

There's only one way I'm getting those curls, so thank you, Remington!

We finished off our first fall adventure wandering through Greenwich village and evntually finding our way to a happy hour full of daiquiris and guac. There are some days when New York can chew you up and spit you out, but then there are other days where bubbles float around you, musicians do their thing and plenty of memories are created.

If there's one thing I know about my time here in NYC, it's that the streets have not seen the last of my awkward self. Only time will tell when I shall strike again.

1. Remove as much makeup from your face as possible

On days when I've been sweating in the sun or after a long night working, I usually bump up the speed.

3. Clean in sections

Honestly, you can clean your face however you'd like, but the timer within the cleanser is based off of the different sections of you face: forehead, left side, right side. If you use the cleanser with the different sections in mind, your face will get a more even clean.

**Pro tip: If you're in the mood to take your spa day up a whole other level, the messaging head of the Cleansing Brush is a 10/10! Your girl is forever trying to stay away from wrinkles and the messaging head definitely relaxing the muscles in my face.

I've been in the market for a brush like this for a while now and my search is now complete! Your "Must-Have" Pens Playoff Outfit

Hey, everyone! Today we are switching things up a bit to talk about hockey. If you follow me on Snapchat you already know I've been religiously watching the Pens in this playoff season. Last year, when the Penguins won the Stanley Cup, Pittsburgh was L.I.T. I've never been a part of a more thriving community. The fans poured into the streets after that final game. If you lived in South Side there was zero sleep to be had. The next week, I watched the parade and the city seriously felt like an amusement park. The energy, excitement, and pure happiness was electric.

This year, Pittsburgh has been particularly on edge. The taste of last year's victory has not been forgotten and we want it back. Every time I think we have the series in the bag, the other team gets ahead and I'm back to sweating bullets and fidgeting with anxiety. My game day attire consists of this sporty and loose fitting jersey, leggings, and white slip ons (perfect for hiding the fact that I've consumed a large amount of beer and buffalo chicken dip. sorry not sorry.) But, let's be real, those jerseys can get toasty, especially when you're brimming with excitement and cheering and having an all around good time. I am nothing if not resourceful and always have a trick or two up my sleeve.

How cool is this shirt?? I'm such a sucker for a beard and hockey has a plethora of good looking men with beards. I saw this shirt and immediately knew I had to make it mine. It's hilarious, but I'm also low key obsessed...

When you're heading to a bar jam packed with fellow Pens fans, things can get pretty heated and as much as I love my Crosby jersey, sometimes I want something a little lighter. This playoffs shirt is light enough to slip under your jersey and perfect when you want to switch things up.

The new playoff line is on point! I love how each line is not only branded for the team, but the different hometowns and regions where the team plays. Their "Steel City Hockey" "Pennsylvania" and "Defend the Burgh" shirts are just a few of my favorites.

In both the jersey and the shirts, I would recommend going up a size. I always prefer my tops a little looser and if you stay true to size they're definitely form fitting-- especially the shirts.

*Me thinking about Game 7: equal parts anxiety and excitement. Such a blur of emotions!

Holding Onto the Moments in Life Worth Remembering

There are moments in life you will never forget. My high school choreographer used to tell us to stop every once in a while and take "snapshots" of our lives-- the moment before you step on stage, the moment after you graduate, the moment before a first date. She told us that our lives would fly by, that all we would have were moments to look back on and we needed to take the time to really remember what that moment was like. That was 7 years ago. I still remember her standing in greenroom before a show telling us to remember the moments in life worth remembering.

Tonight I took a snapshot. It wasn't anything special to an outsider. I got done working a 12 hour day as a waitress-- working a job to pay the bills while I tried to land the job of my dreams. I got some food with a friend, came home with a bit of a buzz and a dire need to pass tf out before I had to wake up for work to do another 12 hour day all over again.

I walked into my apartment to see everything changed--to see the place I had called my home look nothing like the place I had left 12 hours earlier.

And that's when I took my snapshot.

The weight of my decision to move to New York City had truly settled in. I was leaving the town I had called my home for 5 years to live in a city I had only dreamed of living in.

"Growth is uncomfortable. Growth is uncomfortable. Growth. Is. Uncomfortable."

That was my mantra as I walked the hall of a place that felt like nothing familiar. That was the mantra of me beginning the life I was not prepared to begin.

But growth is uncomfortable and the only way to get through the uncomfortableness of life is to live.

At that moment, I took a snapshot of the life I was leaving behind. Maybe not today, but in a few months time that life will be over for me. I will no longer be the Pitt grad living in Oakland working as a waitress and waiting for life to happen.

I am going to be the badass New Yorker who still doesn't have her shit together but is doing everything she can to get wherever she needs to be in life. I won't take no for an answer --- especially if that no is coming from myself. I will take this horrible stress and anxiety-- the uncomfortableness of what life is like right now--- and use it to get me where I need to be.

'This life isn't what you had planned??' Make a new plan.

'Moving to NYC is terrifying as hell and part of you thinks you may end up murdered in a ditch within 4 months time?' Move anyway and hope to God people love you enough to send peonies to your funeral.

I have had the most support and help in my life when other people have shared their real life experiences with me and that is what I'm trying to do today. We are all humans and we are all trying to find our place in the world-- whatever that may mean to each of us.

It's okay not to have everything together.

It's okay to be terrified.

It's only natural to wonder if there is a reason.

Or wonder if any of this is worth it.

Take your snapshot of that moment-- that moment when you are so terrified you feel like you could never fully grip reality again. Take that snapshot to remind yourself to keep going. To remind yourself that you never want to feel that way again and will work your ass off to accept nothing less than what you deserve.

Take that snapshot and then live your messy, beautiful, and unplanned life.

Allow yourself to be where you are in life without ever forgetting where you want to end up.

Take your snapshot.. and then live.

Spring Favorites

Okay, real talk, for whatever reason I spend way more money in the spring than I do in any other season. The warm weather makes me want to treat myself literally all. of. the. time. It's not so great for my wallet or my saving for NYC (read all about that crazy adventure here!) but it's perfect for the blog! In fact, yesterday I went back up to the register after checking out because I found a clutch that would "be perfect for photo shoots". So in lieu of all my recent purchases, I decided to bring you a few of my favorites for the springtime!

URBAN DECAY EDEN EYESHADOW PRIMER
I used to use the original UD eyeshadow primer religiously, but once I found the Eden, matte primer I haven't been able to go back. Fun fact, I have such veiny eye lids (super cute) and I need to pile on eyeshadow to make myself look less like a corpse. My base shadow is gone hella fast because of this and, as much as I love spending money, this girl can't afford to keep buying entire pallets for ONE BASE COLOR. Needless to say, Eden has come in clutch and I am forever in love.

OSEA ATMOSPHERE PROTECTION CREAM
Okay, ladies, the season of summer is right around the corner and our sun kissed skin won't appear without a little sweating. (yuum) If you're like me, foundation is hella light in the summer and forget about heavy moisturizers. Who needs all that when you're already sweating up a storm?? This protection cream gives your skin just the right amount of moisture without weighing you down. And it smells like heaven. No big deal.

PEONIES
I honestly haven't bought any of these for myself yet, but what better flower for the springtime?? I'm pretty surprised I haven't seen more of these beauties flooding my IG feed. If you've been anywhere near my Pinterest you know I'm obsessed. Bury me in peonies.

PARTING MY HAIR DOWN THE CENTER WITH BRAIDED PONY TAILS
(Whoa. What a title.) This has been such a game changer for me. I tweeted about this the other day, and one of my friends texted me saying the exact same thing! For the longest time I was terrified to part my hair down the center. #firstworldprobz It's a little risky, but it definitely pays off in the end. In fact, I went to work with my hair styled like this and I got so many compliments. Center part for the win.

BUCKET BAGS
These bags are so freakin' adorable! I haven't picked one up yet, but I'm seriously itching to. They're so different, yet simple and effortless. If you're in the market for a new purse, I would 100% check these out! Don't be surprised if you see me toting one around in upcoming photo shoots.

WHITE LACE DRESSES
Something about spring always makes me want to wear a white lace dress-- one that's modest but still flirty and fun. I found a few on Red Dress Boutique and I'm trying to hold out as long as I can before I break down and order one. They're seriously adorable and perfect for the spring season!

ANKLE STRAP HEELS
For whatever reason, I always thought this type of heal wasn't cute or it just wouldn't look cute on me. I have pretty wide feet and I like my heels to hide that fact-- not accentuate it. The other day, though, I saw an adorable pair of blush heels in this style and I knew I had to try them for the spring season. I am seriously obsessed! I don't know why I ever thought they were anything less than fabulous.

Why did I just discover these yesterday?? For those of you as in the dark as I was, tangelos are a mix between tangerines and grapefruits. WHAT? Mindblow. And to answer your question, yes, they are delicious.

HOT YOGA @ AMAZING YOGA
When I was back home last month my little sister took me to hot yoga with her. I loved the class, but I had no idea where to find a studio here in Pittsburgh. Two weeks ago some of my friends from work introduced me to Amazing Yoga and I've been hooked ever since! The flow for class is constantly changing and the skill set varies from beginner to expert. I legitimately ask every person I'm slightly friends with to feel my newly formed muscles. My traps are pretty impressive.. If you need a relaxing, but hella effective workout you should try hot yoga. Fo sho.

The Perfect Spring Top ft. Zaful

Happy spring! Monday was officially the first day of spring and I am beyond excited for the changing season. My heart is so happy when their are flowers blooming all around me. It's like the opening scene of Sound of Music-- only just me laying in a bed of flowers... for hours.

If your current climate is anything like mine the 'official start of spring' means nothing to Mother Nature. I've been rocking my parka and blanket scarf all week and I see no end to that any time soon. When Mother Nature doesn't play fair I like to take things into my own hands. Cue this adorable blush, off the shoulder top.

I fell in love with this top the moment I laid eyes on it. Blush is one of my favorite colors and it just so happens to be "in" this spring. When I saw this top was blush and off the shoulder AND LACE DETAILED SLEEVES I was mesmerized. Wow. I knew I had to have it.

But, once again, I do need to reiterate that I live in the Subarctic and ~~sometimes~~ have to dress appropriately. As much as I would love to style this darling top with white pants and wedges, the dark high rise jeans and camel booties were the right choice for the current weather. This top might scream spring, but it can handle the chill. How cool does it look with this choker?? I'm not any sort of badass, but that first picture with the wind in my hair and the graffiti train darkened by the sinister clouds makes me feel like I might be related to Lana del Ray. ....sort of.

"People love tacos" ft. Condado Taqueria

There's always an air of excitement that accompanies any restaurant opening and this held true for the opening of Condado Taqueria. This past weekend I had the pleasure of visiting the restaurant before its opening and sampling their food for myself. As far as first hand accounts go, this was as positive as any owner could have hoped. Now, granted, I am a self-proclaimed taco lover and it has been said that tequila makes up 45% of my blood, but the facts remain: Condado lived up to any and all of my wildest dreams.

All joking aside, the moment I walked into Condado I knew I was in for a treat. The ambiance of any place is the first thing I notice. Food, alcohol, and wait staff aside, I will go to any restaurant, dive bar, or what have you if I feel drawn to their ambiance-- their vibe.

This restaurant doesn't just have art, it is art. My favorite piece is lovingly referred to as "Nacho Volcano". This mural took up an entire wall, featuring a volcano spewing nacho cheese and entrapping any and all tortilla chips in it's lava- cheesy path. (Yes, it is as cool as it sounds.) There was so much thought and intention behind the creation of Condado that I was instantly intrigued as to what else was in store for the evening.

It turns out all of their art was created by local artists harnessing the vibes of graffiti and tattoo artistry to create an atmosphere where every place you sit there is something different to look at. The restaurant is filled with murals that their general manager notes, "work well together, even though they may seem different." He explains, "Some of the tattoo artists that we have will do the more intricate designs" whereas some of their other pieces are in a "fast[er] graffiti style".

When I took a second to really look at each piece, I noticed how true this was. Although each mural or piece of artwork followed a certain theme or idea, they were all so stylistically different. I know for a fact I wasn't able to look at all of the art this unique restaurant had to offer and I know each time I come back will be a new visual adventure.

The experience of being in their restaurant seems to be just as important as the quality of their food and beverage. But let's not forget, Condado is first and foremost a restaurant and I am first and foremost a lover of Mexican cuisine, so I have to talk about the food.

Yes, those are actual pictures I took on my humble iPhone of Condado's real life food. I'm legitimately drooling right now just thinking about how amazing everything was. I am a sucker for blood orange drinks, so I had to get their blood orange house margarita. Let's just say, they definitely didn't skimp on the tequila and I 100% had to sit and drink a glass of water before I interviewed their general manager. Maybe I'm just a light weight, but the two drinks that I had (my second one was Kahlo -- a tequila version of a mojito) were definitely on the stronger side.

After drinks, we ordered their "El Tres Amigos" -- chips accompanied by your choice of three dipping sauces (quesos, salsas, and guacamoles). Jen wanted to try their Tuscan guac and to be honest I had my reservations. Something about artichokes, basil and balsamic didn't seem like it would be good paired with guacamole. I am so glad I was wrong, though. Their Tuscan guac turned out to be my favorite-- we couldn't get enough of it!

And if you were wondering, all of the raving reviews about their queso are correct. It's bangin'! If I could have a lifetime supply of their queso I would die a happy woman.

For our entree, we each decided to create our own tacos. I can't honestly remember what all I put into mine, but it truly was a delicious taco. I was more than overwhelmed with all of the choices they had to offer. They have so many different types of shells, proteins and toppings. The availability of a wide variety of options is the catered experience Condado gives to all of its guests. I will definitely need to come back to try more!

Black Bohemian Dress + Sammy Dress

Hello everyone! I hope you are all having a fabulous March! This month has already been a whirlwind, but I have only hope and positivity for what is to come. :) That was a hella vague opening, but I need an entire "Real Talk" post to get into the craziness that has been my life lately. Hopefully that will be up soon!

Anywho, is it snowing where you are today? Because yesterday I ran outside with a short sleeve shirt on and was completely fine and today I just want to stay snuggled up in the biggest sweater I own. Weather is so confusing! How am I supposed to mentally prepare for the best season ever (aka. summer) if its snowing every other week?!

So, once again, we find ourselves in the season of transition pieces, something I talked about constantly this past fall. I am forever on the lookout for pieces that work great during these strange, "never know what's coming next" months and today I'm bringing you a beautiful boho dress perfect for just that!

Real talk: if I'm being completely honest I underestimated this dress. Well, to be fair I completely underestimated myself in this dress. I 100% thought the low cut front wouldn't be a big deal and my chest would look as "quaint" as the model in the photo. These photos here actually do a better job downplaying things than real life does. So, let me be the first to say that I'm not totally comfortable wearing this dress out for your typical everyday events unless I wear something underneath to keep things a bit more modest.

But that's the beauty of this dress! You can wear it how it was intended or slip something underneath to give it a more modest look and no one would be the wiser. It's all about what makes you comfortable.

Besides that slight hiccup, I'm in love with everything about this dress. Bohemian style dresses are so fun and playful and that is exactly what this dress is -- fun and playful. The wide sleeves flow with your movement, the skirt is flattering but not tooo short and the flowers (and really all of the detailing) give this dress an added romantic feel to the playfulness.

"So how does this dress act as a great transition piece?" you might ask. Well, first of all, in my humble opinion black works for every season. Black in general is great to transition with because you can pair it with anything and it will still look good. Yes, the golden rule of fashion. Even better, though, if its cold outside and you want to wear a dress, but still want to give your legs a little bit of warmth, this black dress pairs seamlessly with tights. Warm outside? Throw aside your tights and you're good to go! This dress would look amazing with riding boots or booties or heals or even cute little sandals (for the wonderful upcoming season of summer).

Really ladies, its a win-win-win-win scenario. 10/10

Reasons Why I Can't Wait for Spring + JORD Giveaway

Hello, lovelies and welcome back! The past few days in Pittsburgh have been absolutely beautiful! It was well over 70 the other day and I was super bummed I had to spend all day inside. I don't think Spring has officially sprung (especially considering its only 41 this morning), but it's getting pretty darn close. All of this beautiful weather has got my head full of blooming flowers and sunnier days. So, in commemoration of this lovely weather and the approaching springtime, I've decided to put together a list of things I'm most excited for this upcoming season!

5 Reasons Why I Can't Wait Another Minute For Spring:

1. Longer days
I'm 100% that person whose mood changes with the weather. I hate how quickly it gets dark now. I'm just happier when things are bright. I've already started to notice a change, but I'm soo ready for it to be light out until like 9PM. Soon!!

2. Spring cleaning
Okay, this is an odd one to get excited about, but I love getting into everything, purging what I don't need and feeling fresh and clean for the springtime. I honestly feel lighter when I get rid of a bunch of things that just s.i.t. in my apartment. You know that drawer you barely open and just push things around in if you ever do open it? I very strongly dislike that drawer. Spring cleaning gives me an excuse to go through the things I own and figure out what I need and what is just taking up space and weighing me down. Especially with my upcoming move this summer, this year's spring cleaning/purging will be crucial!

3. Spring clothes!!
Floral dresses, floral tops, floral jewelry, floral EVERYTHING. Okay, that might be a bit over the top, but I'm all about the florals (even my bedspread sports pretty burgundy flowers. (**see below pictures) Also, colors. Lots and lots of colors and flowy outfits! Everything light and beautiful is what I want to wear during the springtime. I seriously can't wait to pair all of my spring outfits with my beautiful spring inspired JORD watch! This outfit is just a tease of what is in store for Spring. Pastels, florals, lace and a beautiful light wood accent. This watch is just the right amount of springtime earthiness (definitely not a word but I'm using it anyway) -- light, bright, natural and inviting. It's everything I could want in an accent piece!

4. Outdoor activities
One of the occupational hazards of living in Pittsburgh is the cold weather in the winter. One of the reasons I get so excited for Spring is that I can finally go outside again for the pure reason of wanting to go outside and breath in the fresh air. I love sitting on my porch when it gets nice out and reading a book. Or going for a walk in the park nearby. Or even getting off my butt and going for a run. These are things I can never do in the winter months because it's just too darn cold.

5. Birds chirping
This is another odd one, but I love the sound of birds chirping. Really, I just love the sound of any and all life outside. Winter is so sad because most everyone stays where it's warm, and I miss out on the sounds of life. I love keeping my windows open in the warmer months and waking up to the sounds of birds chirping in the morning. It's my favorite way to wake up! I will definitely be a happier person when I can do this again.

Valentine's Day Outfit with Sammy Dress

Hello, hello lovelies! I hope you all had an amazing Valentine's Day full love and all things chocolate. I bought myself a bag of Dove dark chocolates and ate the entire bag in two days... #noshame As much of a sucker as I am for all things pink, red and burgundy, I decided to opt out of the typical 'in your face' color scheme. Sometimes, a little pop of color is all your need to stay festive! This outfit was the perfect amount of chic and somehow managed to also look relaxed, laid back and holiday appropriate in the process. Talk about a win-win scenario!

Cold Shoulder Dress

You all know by now how much I love Sammy Dress. I've found so many on-trend pieces from this site that I've been able to create multiple outfits with, which is so important for me. For those of you who've been following along with my Instagram Style Party, you know how crucial it is for me to have strong base pieces that I can use to create multiple looks. There's nothing worse than buying a shirt or a dress or what have you and only getting a few wears out of it. 3 Perfect Valentine's Day Inspired Hairstyles

Hello & welcome back friends! I hope you are having a fabulous February and enjoying the Instagram Style Party! I am excited to share with you a few of my favorite Valentine’s Day inspired hairstyles. For those of you who don’t know, I’ve been collaborating with Remington and their blog, Remington Ready, for a while now (see here, here and here) to bring readers different hairstyles to try out. Today, I am bringing a hairstyle tutorial post straight to Rachel Lynn and showing you a few of my favorite Valentine’s Day inspired hairstyles to do with a headwrap.

Whenever I think of headwraps or headbands, my mind immediately goes to the queen of all hair accessories, Blair Waldorf. That girl seriously knew how to pull off anything. If I’m being honest, sometimes I can get into this mindset where I convince myself I can’t wear a headband. I’ll go weeks without one and then one day I’ll decide to be a little adventurous, get up the courage to wear one and I find it adds so much to my style. Headbands and headwraps are the perfect accessory to take your hairstyle to the next level.

Style 1:

This first style is by far my favorite. I’m honestly not sure why I’m drawn to this particular style so much, but there’s just something about the simplicity of it, paired with the pop of the headband that I love.

For this style, I will be using a headwrap. You can use a headband if you like, but I’ve found that the wrap adds stability to the look. Personally, I find them easier to style.

Start by curling your hair in loose waves. You can also create this look with straight hair, but curled hair gives it a more romantic feel. I used my Remington TStudio Thermaluxe Curling Wand to create this look. Then, position your headwrap over your hair and a little further back. You want to give some space for the front section of hair. Slowly take all of your hair out from under the wrap (as your normally would) except for a front section of hair. This front section of hair can be as large or as small as you’d like!

Take that front section over the headwrap and to the side, pinning it down towards the back. You can use a bobby pin if you’d like, but if you’re wearing this style on a date, I would recommend dressing it up with a pretty barrette or clip. And there you have it! I like the looser look, so I usually pull my hair out a bit from the pin. This style is subtle, but it does an excellent job framing your face and the hairwrap gives beautiful dimension to an otherwise simple look!

Style 2:

This second style piggybacks off of the first one. Starting where we left off, take your hair and position it in a low ponytail. Then, wrap a strand of hair around the hair tie. Whenever I’m going out and wearing a ponytail, I like to wrap my hair around the hair tie. This gives the look a more elegant, pulled together feel. Now you have a look that still gives dimension to your hair, but is more laid back for those casual Valentine’s Day dates!

Style 3:

What I love most about headbands and headwraps is that they elevate a simple, everyday hairstyle into something chic and new. This next style gives the typical curled hair a cute, “girl next door” feel. If you’re constantly curling your hair and want to do something different with it without having a ton of time to create a complex look, this style is for you. Simply curl your hair and add a headband! I used a darling maroon headwrap to keep with the Valentine's Day theme without being too loud. God knows Blair rocked this style time and time again on Gossip Girl and there's no reason why you can't, too. Chic, simple, elevated, elegant.

Hello, friends! I hope you are all enjoying the February Instagram Style Party. I'm already so pleased and amazed with the feedback. As hopeful and as ready as I am for this month, there are still a lot of things I discovered in January that I am ready to share with you!

1. A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS
Wow, fam. Just wow. I read this book series religiously as a small child. I even started reading them to my little sister (when I was still a small child myself) because I wanted an excuse to read them again. (I was very dissapointed when she wasn't as excited about the series as I.) For those of you who aren't familiar with the series, it's about three orphans whose parents have recently perished in a fire. (Or at least that's what you're told) The series follows the orphans from guardian to guardian, and misfortune to misfortune. They're also followed by the evil Count Olaf, a local actor who uses disguises to insert himself into the children's lives at every step of their journey with the ultimate goal of stealing their fortune.

There was something about the children working against all odds and always coming out on top that I loved! (Even if they went straight into another unfortunate situation.) I absolutely loved the underground society aspect of the series. Such a mystery. The movie was definitely a let down, but the Netflix series is ON POINT. Neil Patrick Harris is phenomenal and his take on the series is seriously spot on.

At first I honestly wasn't about it. I didn't understand what they were trying to do and was thrown off by the caricature aspect of it, but after a few episodes I was absolutely about it ! I love how they created a world that was almost real and slightly cartoonish. And there are so many references hidden in each episode. I absolutely LOVED when Count Olaf (played by NPH) messed up a quintessential theatre tongue twister. It was so small and unimportant, but the theatre nerd in me was obsessed with that moment.

The series perfectly found a way to stay true to the original intent of the children books, while also appealing to the adult audience, now watching, who grew up reading the series. It is seriously the best & I can't wait for the next season! If you read these books as a small child, or just want to see an AMAZING Netflix series, you should 100% check this out.

2. PINK STATIONARY
Or really just any stationary in general. I can't get enough of it. I don't know why, but I feel so motivated when I write in all of my pretty stationary. And I can definitely say I'm more organized with all of my agenda's and notebooks surrounding me with inspiration and tasks to complete. TJMaxx always has the best stationary & for hella cheap, too! I constantly find myself in their stationary section looking for new things that I definitely don't need. #oops

3. PARKS AND REC
When I was home for Christmas, I started watching Parks and Rec on a whim one night to introduce my family to a new tv show I thought they would like to watch. I had honestly never seen all of the series--only bits and pieces. After watching a few of the first episodes, I realized I was missing out on a lot. I watched this series all January long. I'm actually watching it right now. I have 5 episodes left and I'm actually really sad it's almost over. Leslie Knope is my spirit animal & Andy is absolutely hilarious!

In a short summary, P&R follows Leslie Knope, a loyal public servant who works in the Parks and Recreation department, throughout her daily life. She's fiercely passionate about everything she does, but this passion often gets her in trouble. If you liked the Office, and strong female characters, you'll love this show!

4. JUICY COUTURE - VIVA LA JUICY
This perfume is perfect for any time of the year! It's light enough for the summertime, but still sophisticated for the winter months. TJMaxx is almost always selling this, so no need to pay full price! It also has the cutest packaging. I'm such a bow girl, so I knew it was meant to be when I saw it. 10/10 would recommend!

5. ED SHEERAN
Ed Sheeran released two songs from his new album (dropping in March) - Castle on the Hill and Shape of You. I've been listening to him on Spotify on repeat lately. I forgot how amazing he is! I'm officially obsessed and need to see him in concert on this next tour. Just listen to these amazing songs and you'll understand why!

6. CHROMECAST
This invention is the best thing ever. That might be a slight exaggeration, but it's still 100% worth your investment of like $35 (what a steal!!). I love that I can play Spotify on my tv while I'm blogging. It's been such a game changer and helps to get me into the blogging mindset. It was very easy to set up and I can cast everything I want to watch or listen to from my phone! If you follow me on Snapchat (rgolden75) or have seen my Instastories, I'm constantly snapping songs while they play through my chromecast. & even better, now I can watch all of the Parks and Rec or Series of Unfortunate Events to my heart desires and I don't have to worry about splitting my computer screen or stopping work to do it!

7. ISSUES BY JULIA MICHAELS
This song is absolutely phenomenal. Julia's voice is so beautiful and the song is hella catchy! Just listen, you'll be hooked!

February Instagram Style Party!

Hello, everyone! Today I am so excited to finally announce my much anticipated style project! One of the reasons I started this blog was share my style journey with others and hopefully inspire others along the way. Recently, I've been following Hilary Rushford on Instagram and I feel a renewed vigor to reinvent my style, share this process with you and invite you to do the same!

Which brings me to today's post. I want to jump start my style journey by reinventing my closet. Typically when I think of reinventing one's closet, I think of someone going out and buying a whole new wardrobe-- or at least something involved a decent amount of shopping. However, this recent grad's bank account cannot handle that kind of stress. So I've decided to reinvent the things I already own and this style party helps me to do just that!

Your wardrobe should always make you feel warm and fuzzy. The possibilities should be endless--mixing patterns and textures is my idea of a perfect time! And this kind of bliss should not be held back by your wallet. Sometimes, all it takes is a fresh look at the things you have to give you a little pep in your step!

Starting tomorrow, I invite you to join me in rethinking the wonderful things you already own. We all have those central pieces we just can't get enough of. Whether it's that's chic, little black dress or your go to oversized sweater, we all have those pieces we gravitate towards.

But what about those pieces that get pushed around every time we pull out our favorites? I know I'm guilty of constantly thinking I have nothing to wear or fearing that I'm wearing the same things over and over agin. I'm sure I would not have these thoughts nearly as often as I did if I stopped to rethink those left behind! But, girl, I know it's hard to find inspiration in those pieces we see over and over with no hope of revitalization.

This style party is designed to help you rethink what you already have! Whether it's forcing yourself to pick a color you don't usually wear or designing an entire outfit based on one of these themes, you will soon start seeing your wardrobe in a whole new light!

Modern Box Cut Sweater + Sammy Dress

Happy Hump Day! I hope you are having a fabulous week! On Monday, my immune system decided to grace me with a ridiculously strong cold. That morning I gave myself some Nyquil and proceeded to take a 5 hour nap. (oops) But it did the trick! So now that I'm feeling almost 100% I'm motivated and ready to take on the rest of the week.

With each day we get closer to February and closer to the launch of my new project. Guys, I know I keep teasing you about this launch, but I am seriously giddy with excitemtent. I really don't know how everyone will respond to it (which is hella nerve-wracking), but I think it will be an awesome opportunity to connect with my readers on a more personal level! Get your closets and camera's ready!!

Speaking of closets, today on RL I'm sharing with you my newest addiction: the modern box cut sweater.

This sweater was gifted to me by Sammy Dress for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

If you've been around Rachel Lynn for a while now, you already know that in the winter I live in sweaters. I love them oversized and in every color possible! This oversized lavender sweater is the perfect blend of cozy and chic. I love how it seamlessly integrates the choker trend into the actual sweater! One less accessory I need to worry about, while still staying on trend. The v neck cut is also a playful take on the typical box sweater. I can show a little skin & feel a little sexy without sacrificing comfort (or the ability to hide foodbabies). #priorities And who doesn't love unnecessary zippers? Amiright, ladies! :P As a side note, I did order mine a size up. I'm all about oversized sweaters and if you're like me I would definitely recommend sizing up.

This sweater can be worn dressed down for a lazy day at home or dressed up for a shopping trip ino the city. Or, if you're me, you could just wear this sweater for five days straight and sleep in it the other two. A serious 10/10 in 'comfortable chic'!

Floral Shift + Zaful

Hello, friends & happy Thursday!

This dress was gifted to me by Zaful for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This floral dress is everything.

A little tidbit: when I was home for the holidays I went shopping for this dress. I didn't know at the time that I was looking for this dress, but the second I saw it I knew. I had found a darling black, shift, floral dress last year that I have severely overworn and I wanted to find something similar. And the kicker?? I didn't find this in stores. I went home empty handed.

I couldn't find ANYTHING. I went to all of my favorite stores, scoured the racks and still came up empty handed. It's naturally when you want to spend money and find a cute outfit that you can never find what you want. #firstworldproblems

It was honestly meant to be, though, because a few days later I found this beauty. If I could be a dress, I would be this dress. A floral print with bell sleeves and a cross, lace up front? Perfection, ladies -- p.e.r.f.e.c.t.i.o.n.

But the best part about this dress is how it makes me feel. A dress should make you feel comfortable and confident in your skin. We all know that feeling when you slip on the perfect dress. You don't have to constantly check yourself in the mirror or even think about it at all. All you need to worry about is being in the moment and enjoying yourself.

There is no better feeling than finding the perfect dress.

Okay, that is a bit of an exaggeration, but the point remains! Fashion is all about confidence and when I find an outfit (or a dress) that makes me feel comfortable and confident I have it on repeat all year. And the same applies for everyone.

When you find something that makes you feel beautiful, it's okay to wear it as often as your heart desires! And it doesn't have to be a dress! It could be your favorite cardigan or that pair of jeans that hugs your curves perfectly or even a scarf that always makes you feel safe. Find new ways to style it, be creative and have fun, because confidence & comfort never go out of style.

So, not only does this make me feel like a million bucks, but this lightweight dress is perfect for any occasion. I've already worn it as a shirt & paired with jeans-- it's thin enough that you can't even tell! I styled this dress (as I often do) with a simple nude heel, but I can see this dress going beautifully with a pair of riding boots. Dressed up or dressed down, I'm all about having a versatile wardrobe and this dress fit the bill to a T!

2017 ~ Don't Quit Your Day Dream

Happy Wednesday! I don't know about your corner of the universe, but Pittsburgh has been feeling a lot like Spring lately. I don't want to get too excited because it is quite literally the middle of Winter, but a girl can dream, right??

If you haven't already picked up on the theme, January's posts have been focused around reflecting on the past year and planning out success in the new year. (or at least that's the goal!) I've been reading up on business plans and sitting in on different webinars to help me formulate my own thoughts to figure out the direction I want to take RL in 2017.

So far this month, I've been making moves to create a more organized blog. Part of that for me includes keeping clear objectives for each day, week, month and quarter. (yeah, I'm hella determined) I've already felt more focused and motivated and really hope that shows in the type of content I'm creating.

Fingers crossed!

So, if you've been around Rachel Lynn for a while now, you already know how much I love setting goals and sharing them with you! I feel so much more accountable when they're posted up for all my readers to see. One of the best feelings is reviewing the previous month and having all of my goals (or almost all of the goals) complete.

This post will give me something concrete to look back on--something I can revisit each quarter to make sure I'm on track. I also love reading posts like these & want to inspire my readers to live an "intention driven life", which is my overall goal for 2017.

Because what this all boils down to is creating the life you want to live. I want to create a life that I will love each and every day & not just the days I have off of work. I want to look back on 2016 and 2017 knowing that all of the hard work was worth it.

Quarterly Goals:

Q1: Refresh & Renew

New year, new blog, who's with me?? In my mind, there's no better way to start the new year than refreshing. The hype of the new year has everyone's head in the "changing" and "revamping" game. What motivation you didn't have at the end of the year has suddenly reincarnated on January 1st.

Crazy how that works!

So I've decided, while I have all of my revamping motivation, to do all of the things I wanted to accomplish *logistically* with my blog but never actually got around to. As you can see, I've already gotten a few of those goals down (i.e. my personal domain name and blog graphic), but there are two more pivotal items I still have to finish off. 2017 is all about making Rachel Lynn more professional!

Q2: Work/Life Balance

One of the biggest failures for me in 2016 was finding a work/life balance. When I graduated, I threw myself into blogging. Which was fine, because, at first, I had all of the time in the world. But I got a job and suddenly I had half of the time I used to but still trying to do the same amount of work.

Not a smart idea.

Now that I know this is a quarterly goal I want to accomplish, I can already feel myself making positive changes this month to bring good work/life habits (i.e. writing posts ahead of time & cutting back on the amount of time I spend on menial tasks). But I still definitely have room to grow. I really don't want to stay up the night before a post should go up working on finishing touches. It's better than waiting until the morning of (like I used to do), but I want to move towards having things all wrapped up and ready to go at least a day in advance.

"Life is a balancing act."

Q3: Scale It Up

This quarter is just what it sounds like. After I have renovated everything that needs renovating and after I have found balance in my work & personal life, I want to focus on scaling everything up. I want to figure out what projects I can dive into that will put Rachel Lynn on the maps.

I already have a project in the works for February (which I am so FREAKING EXCITED ABOUT!), but I want to do more. I want to bring my readers products & take webinars and online classes-- I want to do things take Rachel Lynn to the next level.

Q4: Time to Shine

This quarter is admittedly the least planned out, but it's the one I'm most excited for. This quarter is where I want to take all of the work I've done over the past 9 months and gear that towards starting projects and taking all of the knowledge I've just learned to grow.

This quarter is also the same quarter where my blog started to stumble a bit in 2016 and when I had to take a break. In 2017, I want to have secured a strong enough base throughout the rest of the year to take this last quarter by storm.
