History of Mobile Cell Phone dates back to 1876 when Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone and invention of radio by Nikola Telsa in 1880s. These two inventions laid the foundation of wireless communication that we today know as mobile cell phone.

We understand that the telephone is related to a mobile cell phone, but how is radio related to a cell phone? Well, do you know that a mobile cell phone is basically a radio? Yes, a cell phone is a combination of technologies used in a telephone and a radio. Early telephones were wired and fixed.

Use of radio frequency in mobile phones for communication removed the wires and made the telephone wireless.

Now there is no need to stick to one place to talk over phone. Now you have the freedom of movement – Just move and talk, hence the name – Mobile Phone.

Today’s mobile cell phones offer all kinds of features including – working with and storing data and information, calculator, internet, TV, games and much more.

But did you ever wonder how a mobile cell phone actually works? How are we able to talk to each other over cell phones without the need of any wire?

Let me start with the SIM (Subscriber Identity Module). A Mobile Cell Phone SIM is a microchip with circuitry to access mobile phone network (Technically - Radio Signals).

The SIM fits into the mobile and gets connected with a set of circuits build inside the cell phone. A cell phone cannot get connected to any mobile phone network to access radio signals without a SIM.

It is the SIM that completes the circuitry inside and once SIM is inserted inside the cell phone, the circuit inside the mobile phone is complete and it starts receiving signals and we are able to talk.

One may insert a SIM from any GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) service provider and the phone gets connected to that particular network.

CDMA (Code division multiple access) Mobile Cell Phones have built-in SIM.

Cell Phone Network is made up of a series of base stations to transmit radio signals to mobile phones. The area covered by each of these base stations is called a cell.

A mobile phone gets connected to the nearest base station. If we move from one place to another, the cell phone searches for the nearest base station and gets connected to it. This is why we see mobile towers everywhere. A mobile phone gets connected to the nearest base station. How a cell phone works depends on the type of phone it is.

How a cell phone is made depends of the kind of phone the manufacturer produces. Manufacturing cell phones includes several cell phone technologies, techniques and engineering.

Whatever be the category of the cell phone, the production process is more or less same with little more or little less steps depending on the kind of phone being manufactured.

Since it is not possible to explain the production process of all kinds of mobile cell phones here, I explain the common steps and procedures that follow in manufacturing most cell phones.

Designing a Cell Phone

Mobile cell phone manufacturers make a team of engineers with a team leader to design a concept. This team of engineers creates the design and concept of the next cell phone of the company.

All cell phone manufacturers try to add new looks and features to their next cell phone.

Once the design and concept of a new cell phone is ready, it is passed on to upper level of senior engineers for approval. Once the new design is approved by experienced engineers, it passes on to the next stage.

Adding Features to the Cell Phone

Once the concept for a new cell phone is ready, the next step is to add new features. Any cell phone manufacturing company will always try to add some or the other new feature in their next release. For e.g. a basic cell phone can be upgraded to a music phone, or a music phone can be upgraded to a camera phone and so on. The idea is to offer something new to customer.

Cell Phone Parts

Once the concept, design and features to be added are ready, it is time to make a list of all the required parts (both hardware and software). Engineers will make a list of hardware to be used in the new cell phone. These hardware may include - battery, housing, controls and buttons, cables and sockets etc. If it is a CDMA cell phone, the SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) will be included in the phone itself.

It is not necessary that the mobile cell phone manufacturing companies manufacture all parts of a cell phone or have all the parts in stock. Many cell phone manufacturers purchase parts from other vendors or contract manufacturers. Contract manufacturers are those who manufacture these parts on a contract basis. If the cell phone manufacturing company does not have any of the required part or parts, it will either manufacture it or get it from some other source.

Cell Phone Assembly

Once everything required for production is in stock, it is time to assemble all the cell phone parts. Most cell phone assembly line uses Surface Mount Technology (SMT). Most cell phone assembly line are cleanroom (clean from all kinds of dirt) and ESD-safe (to prevent any static charge). All engineers and workers in the cell phone assembly line wear esd-safe uniform that include ESD-safe aprons, ESD-Safe hand gloves, Head Covers, ESD-safe sleepers or shoes and wrist strap or heal strap. Even the flooring is ESD-Safe.

The assembly line is meant to put all cell phone parts together. Most electronic components of a cell phone are too sensitive to static charge; hence all care is taken to prevent it. With all the protection, workers assemble all the parts with assembly machines.

Testing & Packaging

Once the cell phone is assembled and loaded with software, it moves to the QA (Quality Assurance) department for testing. The QA analysts test each and every cell phone for each functionality including signal, sound, battery, key pads, screen, video, Bluetooth and all other features included in the phone. If any problem is found in any of the cell phone, it is sent back for rework. This faulty cell phone will again return back for QA testing if passed, will be given an OK, or it will go into the trash.

Now when the cell phone is ready, it is time for packaging and shipping.

Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) has hit hard times once again. Sony has slashed production costs of this gaming console by 35%, yet the PlayStation3 is selling at a loss and the sales has dropped 19 percent last month from the previous year. But these are not the only problems Sony is facing with PS 3: Now comes a free speech issue surrounding banned words from the PlayStation's "Home." Sony has run into trouble with its efforts to quell what some may consider offensive language.

Sony has banned the use of the words "gay," "lesbian," "bi-sexual" and "Jew" - among others - as club names, and is filtering them from text chats. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that this has left certain groups unable to express their solidarity. For instance, a gay allegiance could not give themselves any moniker containing the word "gay," for it would be filtered out.
While it is in Sony's best interests to quell hate speech, banning words that are only negative when used in certain contextual situations plays on wobbly ground. Xbox Live experienced a similar issue earlier this year when it banned the username "theGAYERgamer." This case of censorship became even more complicated when Richard Gaywood tried to use his surname as a username and was banned. Similar censorship controversies arose when Wikipedia banned an image in the UK and Facebook censored breastfeeding photos.

"Home" has also suffered conflicts with racism and sexism. An Ars Technica reader reports, "You can't walk far in "Home" without finding people yelling obscene crap back and forth. So maybe they're tweaking the default voice settings, because Sony is going to have a real problem selling this world to families."

Add to this list of problems the fact that the PS3 is no longer the cheapest Blu-ray disc player on the market and you're left with a fledging console bleeding money and struggling to maintain order in its social applications. While I do not believe this spells an immediate disaster for the PS3, these circumstances carry with them a weight that does not bode well for consumers. If these tiny earthquakes persist, we could be witnessing the beginning of the end.
