if you know anything about bwlp you might know
that a BIG passion of mine is jump rope.
as a matter of fact, it was one of the first disciplines
pertaining to hip hop culture that i got 'roped' into.
my second year of teaching entailed instructing and
choreographing a fusion routine (synchronized music, dance and jump rope skills)
with my 3rd grade class in Berkeley, CA.

that was also the year David Walker invited me to be a guest
and help out with the Double Dutch Classic that goes down
every 1st weekend in December at the Apollo theater in Harlem.
(to this day, y'all). Lauren Walker, current NDDL President, is definitely
carrying on the legacy, and has been for the past several years.

and just a quick fyi, David Walker passed two years ago, but he
was the founder (along with his detective partner with NYPD,
officer Ulysses) of the National Double Dutch League,
and initiated the official rules of the sport that is now
jump rope worldwide.

to the right i have a few new cold crushes to add to my list:
and acquaintance organization, Jumping for Joy, based
in Santa Clara, CA, now known as the Sol Jumpers.

and USA Jump Rope. It appears that as an organization, they have
got their house in order and made a come-back- real strong.
peep the Panther video.

get ready to hear about my exploits in producing real hip-hop
tracks designed for jump rope, inspired by the Duck Rock campaign
of Malcom McLaren.

but from a very West Oakland perspective. we have a culture and
an extremely tight science emphasis in elementary education that
will prove to turn things out!

i feel very lucky to be a world citizen with a global attitude and the
angelic spiritual support to tap and bring so many valuable resources to
communities like West Oakland. it's looking like it's time to get busy.

focus for the new academic year beginning in september 2012 to 2013 looks to include:
more music production, a recordings project tied to the writing curriculum,
double dutch fitness campaign through 3D Double Dutch Jumprope Arts, academic rigor, and science connections.

much apologies for the extreme pause in information as of late, but life is
flat out getting restructured around here.

These are related to, but not exactly like, migraines and are also called suicide headaches. They can be extremely debilitating and people have been known to kill themselves from them. Fortunately I do not suffer to that extent -- but they are bad.

While I was leading trips in the Mojave, I went to see an eccentric artist friend of mine who lives on the edge of Death Valley. I mentioned my headaches to her. She said, "I am a hands-on healer and I can help you."

"Well I don't have time right now I have to go meet my other group."

"It only takes a moment."

Ok, I had nothing to lose. She uncrossed my legs, had me sit erect, closed my eyes and as I sat still on a worn out folding chair in the hot desert heat. She put her hands on my head, said some things I could not understand, brushed rapidly downward several times and that was it. Fifteen seconds, max.

Now I am a scientist-type, a skeptic. If it cannot be measured and data gathered under controlled circumstances then I don't usually believe it. The fact is, however, I have not had a headache in nearly two years. Now they are called cluster headaches for a reason so it could have just been a coincidence. Last April when I returned to the desert I stopped by for another hands-on healing from LeAnne, just in case it wasn't.

Right now we are immersed in this holiday season, and spirit abounds. At age 60 I am finally beginning to understand, or at least feel, that there are many things in our world that cannot be quantified or explained but do exist. What hubris we humans have to think that if our feeble minds cannot grasp it, then it must not exist or be real. There are things that are simply mysteries right now.

My friend LeAnne touched me and I was healed. How, I do not know. Maybe someday we will be able to measure the energy fields that emanate from some people that can actually rearrange neuronal pathways at a close distance but for now I must accept that LeAnne is simply a hands-on healer with a gift to give.

This is Michael Ellis, with a Christmas Perspective."

Catch the audio here.

Laura Nyro Is In. It is to remind us that some of our own forefathers once explicitly rejected the republic to which they'd pledged themselves, and dreamed up another country, with slavery not merely as a bug, but as its very premise. It is to point out that at this late hour, the totems of the empire of slavery--chief among them, its flag--still enjoy an honored place in the homes, and public spaces, of self-professed patriots and vulgar lovers of "freedom." It is to understand what it means to live in a country that will never apologize for slavery, but will not stop apologizing for the Civil War.

In August, I returned to Gettysburg. My visits to battlefields are always unsettling. Repeatedly, I have dragged my family along, and upon arrival I generally wish that I hadn't. Nowhere, as a black person, do I feel myself more of a problem than at these places, premised, to varying degrees, on talking around me. But of all the Civil War battlefields I've visited, Gettysburg now seems the most honest and forward-looking. The film in the visitor center begins with slavery, putting it at the center of the conflict. And in recent years, the National Park Service has made an effort to recognize an understated historical element of the town--its community of free blacks."

Read more here.

BWLP Live Acoustic For Japan. Bring what you love into the classroom. Jobs once said, "People with passion can change the world for the better." Asked about the advice he would offer would-be entrepreneurs, he said, "I'd get a job as a busboy or something until I figured out what I was really passionate about." That's how much it meant to him. Passion is everything.

2. Put a dent in the universe; inspire children to change the world. Jobs believed in the power of vision. He once asked then-Pepsi President, John Sculley, "Do you want to spend your life selling sugar water or do you want to change the world?" Don't lose sight of the big vision.

3. Make connections in curriculum to a diversity of subjects and realia. Jobs once said creativity is connecting things. He meant that people with a broad set of life experiences can often see things that others miss. He took calligraphy classes that didn't have any practical use in his life -- until he built the Macintosh. Jobs traveled to India and Asia. He studied design and hospitality. Don't live in a bubble. Connect ideas from different fields.

4. Say no to 1,000 things; focus on a few key skills for academic success. Jobs was as proud of what Apple chose not to do as he was of what Apple did. When he returned in Apple in 1997, he took a company with 350 products and reduced them to 10 products in a two-year period. Why? So he could put the "A-Team" on each project. Put the "A-Team Attitude" on each semester goal. What are you saying "no" to?

5. Create insanely different experiences; how many things do children see when they walk in the door suggest their lives are enriched upon entry? Jobs also sought innovation in the customer-service experience. When he first came up with the concept for the Apple Stores, he said they would be different because instead of just moving boxes, the stores would enrich lives. Everything about the experience you have when you walk into an Apple store is intended to enrich your life and to create an emotional connection between you and the Apple brand. What are you doing to enrich the lives of your students?

6. Master the message; humans are conditioned to listen to storytelling- don’t fight the feeling!! Tell good stories that lead students to tasks and expectations. It’s better than appearing to beg them to listen. (I was ‘almost’ there...) You can have the greatest idea in the world, but if you can't communicate your ideas, it doesn't matter. Jobs was the world's greatest corporate storyteller. Instead of simply delivering a presentation like most people do, he informed, he educated, he inspired and he entertained, all in one presentation.

7. Sell dreams, not daily agendas. Jobs captured our imagination because he really understood his customer. He knew that tablets would not capture our imaginations if they were too complicated. The result? One button on the front of an iPad. It's so simple, a 2-year-old can use it. Your students don't care about your daily agenda. They care about themselves, their hopes, their ambitions. Jobs taught us that if you help your students reach their dreams, you'll win them over.

So the overall message is: dream bigger for your students and consequently yourself.
See genius in your craziness, believe in yourself, believe in your vision: crafting young people to be the best people they can be first to apply and develop their academic skills second, and be constantly prepared to defend those ideas.

Latin Music Summer.

I'm investigating another avenue of my heritage circa a Cubano grandfather...
It's up to the next generation of educators to research and unearth cultural gems to instill in today's youth that adversity has always birthed beautiful artistic expression.

We hear so much about the 50's, and yes, there was Mambo...
the likes of this:
Are we nearing the apocalypse, or a new age foretold by the Mayan calendar's December 2012 end?

More likely the world is just reaping what it's sowed. The Japanese catastrophe has hewed close to a Godzilla movie: nature unleashes the radioactive monster created by human folly. Populations held under the thumb of cartoon dictators finally had enough. America, tethered to the Middle East by petroleum pipelines, is trying to settle the angry young men in Libya and elsewhere down, ushering them away from the oil fields by distributing their favorite toys: guns and bombs. Look at that pretty explosion. Our economy? Countrywide, Madoff, and the banks took care of that.

Aside from military action, politicians' response to these alarming events has been oddly surgical, focusing on whether just the government's fingers and toes should be amputated, or might it be better to simply shoot the government in the head so we can hurry back to our private compounds. That vision-thing is absent, unless the vision is of a hobbled government waiving its crutches and yelling "cut that out" as monopolies and mega-corporations pick the pockets of the poor, while the rest of us play Angry Birds on our hand computers.

Through the rubble of government deficits, shafts of light show potential pathways to a future we might actually want to live in. California's energy policies are stumbling towards a more reliable and sustainable era. The federal stimulus package signaled that collective action can be taken in the midst of crises. And citizen-leaders are reclaiming under-performing schools and ill-tended green spaces, through literal grassroots efforts supported by a mix of public and private dollars.

Whether our travails have a spiritual dimension -- and really, what doesn't -- or are purely human made, our response should be the same: praise the Lord and pass the ammunition. Whereby "praise" might mean stop poking at your iPhone, and wake up to what's going on; and "ammunition" comes in the form of adopting public policies that create the kind of world we want for our children.

With a Perspective, I'm Steven Moss.

Muddy's Mojo

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 275px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf2Vnpx1B81J_PL0LbPREKL6oP34MkW36gyECfUFN4u_ZIBLScYZK-lkaZeT2DjO4EazX-cu8Vw8zRwyu0zOARhDIeqFrjX9gZsDPZycozsGHLHmM43GtvjgMRmt_xkKM4ildvyabtnxA/s320/mw1j.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5592076630048826882" />

What do you think a Blues musician named 'Muddy Waters' looks like?
What do you think his music might sound like?
What do you think 'mojo' is?

I loved the answers for this last question:
"Swagger!"
"Witchcraft or Voodoo!"
"Spirit!"
"A Gorilla!" (...yeah, too much Power Puff...)

Well today we'll see a live version of Muddy Waters doing Got My Mojo Working from the American Folk Blues Festival British Tours 1963-1966....
AFTER some conversation about this quote and picture.

This week we'll analyze the lyrics.

My kids...so RICH!

CRIMMINNY!!!!
