A Sukkos Discovery

Two Mothers or Four Mothers?

A small נקודה in an old פיוט — with a fascinating answer

The first day פיוט לסוכות, (Shachris before Kedusha — אקחה בראשון) we say:

“בַּעֲרָבוֹת שְׁתַּיִם” (we take 2 Arovos)
“כְּאִמָּהוֹת שְׁתַּיִם” (like the 2 mothers)

“בַּאֲגֻדּוֹת אַרְבַּע” (we take the 4 minim)
“כְּגִבְעוֹת אַרְבַּע” (like the 4 mothers)

THE OBVIOUS QUESTION

Are there two or four mothers?

My father a”h, while in Shul, was troubled by this question.

He looked in the מטה לוי who explains that the 2 mothers are Leah & Rochel.

But my father wasn’t satisfied with this Pshat.

He came up with his own Pshat that the pronunciation should be KeAmhos with a patach.

When he came home from shul, he checked in his Heidenheim Machzor, that he kept at home.

What Heidenheim Writes

החכם וולף היידנהיים writes that he found a very old Machzor where it says, instead of Keimahos (mothers) — Keamhos (maids).

Instead of a חיריק under the Alef, it is a פתח, referring to the two maids זלפה & בלהה.

This makes perfect sense.

The ערבות, which are the least of the Arba Minim, represent the Amahos — the maids.

And then, that same evening...

I had the opportunity to check out an old 14th-century handwritten Machzor.

In this Machzor it does indeed say KeAmhos with a פתח under the אלף.

Not the two mothers —
but the two maids: זִלְפָּה וּבִלְהָה

The First Season Begins on Sukkos

חצי תשרי, מרחשון וחצי כסליו — זרע

ב"מ ק"ו ע"ב

SIX SEASONS

There are six seasons in the year, each lasting for two months. The first season of זרע starts in חצי תשרי (first day of Sukkos), the complete month of מרחשון and the first half of כסליו.

אבי מורי, ר' צבי יהודה זללה"ה said, on the famous Midrash,

"ולקחתם לכם ביום הראשון"

Rishon L'cheshbon Avonos.

PERHAPS THE ORIGINAL גירסא

Perhaps the original גירסא was

עונות

instead of עוונות (difference in spelling: only one vav)

Seasons instead of sins.

The first day of Sukkos (15 Tishrei) is the first day of the first season זרע.

THE נענועים OF THE לולב

The גמרא says that the נענועים (shaking of the לולב) rids the world of harmful winds and dew. The Torah said the לולב should be taken on the first day of זרע to rid the world of harmful weather from the planting season.

Making Kiddush on Yom Kippur is a מחלוקת between

ר' עקיבא איגר

who holds it is only a מצוה דרבנן unless it falls
on a Shabbos and the

חתם סופר

(הגהות O.Ch.271) who
holds it is a מצוה דאורייתא to make Kiddush every
Yom Kippur. (even weekdays)

If it is a מצוה דאורייתא, one must have כוונה  in the
שמונה עשרהi on Yom Kippur night when saying
ברוך אתה ה' – מקדש ישראל ויום הכפורים
to be מקיים  (Yotzei) מצות קידוש.
שבת יו"כ everybody agrees that it is
a מצוה דאורייתא and one needs to have כוונה to
be יוצא
As far as I know, ספרי הלכה don't mention the מצוות קידוש ביו",כ
It is unfortunate how many people are unaware of this מצוה and
are not יוצא קידוש on Yom Kippur.

Mori V'Rabi Harav Hagaon R. Shlomo Miller Shlita said
If one is unaware of this Halacha that מקדש ישראל ויום הכפורים
is the קידוש of Yom Kippur then he is a מתעסק (when saying it)

Mitzvos דרבנן one is יוצא even without כוונה  However,
if one is מתעסק he is not יוצא even מצוות דרבנן.
Therefore one must at least know that the Bracha of מקדש ישראל
is the קידוש ליום כיפורים
According to the חתם סופר, or on שבת יו"כ knowing is not enough
you must also have כוונה  to be יוצא קידוש when saying the Bracha
of מקדש ישראל.

HOW כפרות PROTECTS FROM DEATH?

We find in the גמרא the concept of confusing the Satan
(כדי לערבב השטן). We also find a similar case of שינוי השם,
changing the name of a חולה. (sick person)

The original מנהג of כפרות was also the same idea. It
was done for the protection of the children if there
was ח"ו a גזירה for the זרע (child) to die we confuse the
שטן with a different זרע (seed) the bean plant which
gets thrown in the river.

At a later stage when the מנהג כפרות started for adults,
they wouldn't use the flower pot with bean זרע.
They used a גבר (chicken) instead to confuse the שטן
so not the גבר the man will die, but the גבר the chicken.

When Are We Written
and When Are We Sealed?

בראש השנה יכתבון
וביום צום כיפור יחתמון

On Rosh Hashanah will be inscribed and on Yom Kippur will be sealed.

THE QUESTION
To whom is the Paytan referring?

Chazal tell us that both, Tzadikim and Reshoim, have the Kesiva and Chasima on Rosh Hashanah.

The Beinonim have the Kesiva and Chasima on Yom Kippur.

The Difficulty:
If the writing and sealing take place on the same day for each group, why does the Paytan describe the writing on Rosh Hashanah and the sealing on Yom Kippur?

Three Possible Answers

A. A Different Opinion

The Paytan disagrees with Reb Kruspadoai and holds that all have the Kesiva on Rosh Hashanah and the Chasima on Yom Kippur.

B. The Beinonim

The Beinonim can have their Kesiva on day 1 or day 2, 3, 4, etc., until Yom Kippur (depending when he did Teshuva).

Some Beinonim have the Kesiva on Rosh Hashanah and others have it on Yom Kippur, but all Beinonim have the Chasima on Yom Kippur.

(מהרש״א ראש השנה)

C. The Individual and the Community

For Yechidim (individuals):
The Kesiva and Chasima happen the same day.

Tzadikim and Reshoim on Rosh Hashanah and Beinonim on Yom Kippur.

For the Tzibbur:
(Kehilla, City, Country, etc.)

If the Tzibbur is Beinoni, the Kesiva is on Rosh Hashanah and the Chasima on Yom Kippur.

(who was a Holocaust Survivor*)

Yahrzeit 2nd day Rosh Hashanah

A holocaust survivor asked Reb Itzikel zt"l (Antwerp). We say the Avinu Malkeinu

"הרוגים על שם קדשך – טבוחים על יחודך."

Why two leshonos, שם קדשך and יחודך .

Reb Itzikel was stumped and had no answer.

The holocaust survivor said "let me give the rebbe my answer".

When the nazis ym"s marched into the town, they assembled 100 men and lined them up in front of the river.

The nazi with a machine gun started shooting from the right side and moved his gun towards the left till he killed all the men.

When the shooting began, all men started to say the shema together.

THE FINAL WORDS

שמע ישראל ה׳ אלקינו ה׳ אחד

The people on the right died when they said ה׳ אלקינו .

They did not manage to finish the posuk (הרוגים על שם קדשך)

The people on the left managed to stay alive for the extra second to say hashem echod (yichudecha)

R. Itzikel zt"l couldn't stop crying after hearing this pshat.

A PERSONAL FOOTNOTE

*R. Yitzchok Donath zt"l (my uncle) was Moser Nefesh and risked his life together with the Veitzener Rav zt"l to blow Shofar for 1,400 children who were destined to the crematoria the following. day in Auschwitz.

He enabled them to the last Mitzvah in this world with Tekias Shofar.

My uncle too was Niftar with his last Mitzvah of Tekias Shofar.
