Chocoholics looking for chocolates that were a bit different would have to search out for a local delicatessen or travel to places like Selfridges or Harrods in London.

In the late seventies there was something of a revolution when holidaymakers returning from their continental breaks started to ask for the delicious truffles and luxury praline chocolates that they had eaten while they were on holiday. Numerous small Belgian chocolate shops started to spring up all over the UK and many were run by well to do ladies whose husbands funded their 'hobby' as an alternative to part time work. The shops were often very small - literally just big enough for a chiller cabinet to store the chocolates, some shelves to display boxes and standing room for just a few customers. They would carefully pack up small 'ballotins' of delicious handmade luxury Belgian chocolates, carefully bow it and perhaps decorate it with silk flowers. The shops were often situated in secondary positions and this coupled with the high cost of the chocolates and low sales meant that many of them failed after a short time trading.
Aside from it being visually appealing as a decoration, it is also nutritiously and deliciously edible! It is regularly bought at the store. There are professionally-made ones which can be expensive, but believe it or not, they can be made at home. Commonly used at parties, they serve as both table decor and finger food.

They can be included in party menus or in just about anything to spice things up. The first thing you need to do is to prepare the ingredients needed to make the fruit bouquet. You need fresh fruits like whole pineapples, cantaloupes, melon and strawberries. You also need a bunch or two of red and green grapes. Bamboo skewers, cutting board, cookie cutters, knives, peeler, melon baller, a vase or pail and florists foam will also be used.

First off, you need to clean the vase or pail you are going to use. Put the florists foam into the bottom of the container. The amount of foam to be used should be enough to support the entire bouquet, but should not be seen over the rim. Prepare the fruits to be used by rinsing them first. Peel off the skin of the fruits as necessary and remove seeds and inedible parts.
   3. Preheat an outdoor grill for medium high heat, and lightly oil grate.
   4. Cook chicken on grill until no longer pink and juices run clear. Garnish with cilantro and lemon wedges.
    * 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook spaghetti pasta until al dente. Drain well. Toss with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and set aside.

Meanwhile in a large skillet, cook chopped bacon until slightly crisp; remove and drain onto paper towels. Reserve 2 tablespoons of bacon fat; add remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil, and heat in reused large skillet. Add chopped onion, and cook over medium heat until onion is translucent. Add minced garlic, and cook 1 minute more. Add wine if desired; cook one more minute.

Return cooked bacon to pan; add cooked and drained spaghetti. Toss to coat and heat through, adding more olive oil if it seems dry or is sticking together. Add beaten eggs and cook, tossing constantly with tongs or large fork until eggs are barely set. Quickly add 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, and toss again. Add salt and pepper to taste (remember that bacon and Parmesan are very salty).

Serve immediately with chopped parsley sprinkled on top, and extra Parmesan cheese at table.

Cook on medium heat under the grill, on the barbecue or in a pan untill the patty is cooked to your preferred degree of doneness or the internal temp reaches 160F/70C

Split the rolls and toast the cut surfaces lightly (under grill, on barbecue or in a pan) just before the patties are done. Spread mayonnaise on the bottom halves, add a thin slice of onion, some lettuce, a slice of tomato and a little sliced gherkin. Top it off with a little mayo and ketchup, the patty and the top half of the roll.

For Patties

1lb/500g ground beef

a little pepper, fresh ground is better
a little salt, none if the bacon is salty
1 hand fresh bread crumbs
1 egg lightly beaten
1 quarter beef bouillon/stock cube dissolved in 2 to 3 tablespoons water

To Cover The Patty

8 strips or enough bacon to enclose 4 patties
some toothpicks

For The Rolls

4 rolls
2 bananas
a little butter

Directions:

Mix all the patty ingredients thoroughly, leaving the bacon for later.

Make sure the mixture is cool. Divide mixture into 4 equal balls and mold into patties

Wrap the bacon around the patties entirely covering it in as thin a layer as possible and secure by either tucking the edges under or by using toothpicks.

Peel the 2 bananas and split each in half by cutting down the full length from top to bottom. You now have 4 long 'half' bananas. Cut these diagonally in half and you have 8 shorter pieces. Heat a pan and fry the bananas in a little butter over low to medium heat for a minute or two, turning, until heated through and softish in texture. Set aside.

Cook the bacon wrapped patties on medium heat under the grill, on the barbecue or in a pan until the patty is cooked to your preferred degree of doneness or the internal temp reaches 160F/70C.

Split the rolls and toast the cut surfaces lightly (under grill, on barbecue or in pan) just before the patties are done. Place 2 pieces of banana on each of the bottom halves. Remove the toothpicks and put the patties on top of the bananas and cover with the top halves of the rolls. I hope that you will enjoy this somewhat different bacon and banana burger.

* 1/2 lb. pork, sliced
* 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
* 3 cloves garlic, minced
* 1 onion, chopped
* 2 tomatoes, chopped
* 1/2 squash, cubed
* 2 cups sliced okra
* 2 cups 1-1/2 inch long cut sitaw (yard long beans)
* 2 eggplants, sliced
* 1 ampalaya (bitter gourd and/or bitter melon), sliced
* 1 to 1-1/2 cup water
* 2 to 3 tbsp. bagoong alamang (salted shrimp paste)

Cooking Procedures :

1. In a large, deep skillet (or casserole), heat oil over medium heat. Cook pork until it turns slightly brown.
2. Stir in garlic, onions and tomatoes. Sauté for a few minutes until tomatoes wilted.
3. Add squash and okra, stir-fry for a minute or two and then add the rest of the vegetables. Gently stir to combine.
4. Pour in water and add the bagoong alamang, and bring to a boil.
5. Lower the heat and simmer covered over low heat until vegetables are tender. Be sure not to overcook it. You may wish to correct the taste by adding a little bit of bagoong alamang. Gently stir to blend.
6. Immediately remove from heat. Transfer to a serving dish. Serve hot.

Directions:

1. Place asparagus and onion in a saucepan with 1/2 cup vegetable broth. Bring the broth to a boil, reduce heat and let simmer until the vegetables are tender.
2. Reserve a few asparagus tips for garnish. Place remaining vegetable mixture in an electric blender and puree until smooth.
3. Melt butter in the pan that was used for simmering the asparagus and onions. Stir while sprinkling flour, salt, and pepper into the butter. Do not let the flour brown. Allow the mixture to cook only 2 minutes. Stir in remaining 1 1/4 cups vegetable broth and increase the heat. Continue stirring until the mixture comes to a boil.
4. Stir the vegetable puree and milk into the saucepan. Whisk yogurt into the mixture, followed by lemon juice. Stir until heated through, then ladle into bowls. Garnish with reserved asparagus tips. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese if desired.
