A peek inside my suitcase | packing for Queensland

Well, it's getting down to the wire and I'm busy packing up my suitcases for Queensland. I don't know about you, but I'm always curious about what other people pack for a trip, so I thought it might be fun to show you some of what I'm taking with me to Australia.

I'm trying to pack as light as I can. I'll only be there 5 days and with some really long flights on either end of the trip, carrying around a lot of luggage isn't something I want to do.

Here's what I have packed in my bags so far:

-Various swimsuits from DownEast Basics, Divinita Sole + Hapari-

-This Fuji Film underwater camera that I'm looking forward to trying out-

-Eye drops, my favourite floss, warm weather clothes with a jacket and some cardis thrown in-

-I'm bringing along my new Gracie Butterscotch Jo Totes bag-

-In it will be my Canon 5D Mk II, 50mm 1.2 lens and my new 24-70mm zoom-

-I've been working in these new barefoot shoes from Merrell the past week and I'm absolutely loving them so far! I can't wait to really get them dirty on the trip-

-melatonin, earplugs, my cute travel notebook and some good old Canadian chocolate-

-a new book to read, the latest issue of REAL SIMPLE, a couple of yummy almond+coconut KIND bars

I'm making some headway, but still have a lot more packing to do.

Travel Photo Checklist | Free Download

We've been chatting about all things travel on the blog the last while as I countdown the days until I leave for Queensland, Australia! Only 5 more days until I board a plane at the Calgary international airport and make my way from LAX to Brisbane to Queensland. I'm busy packing and getting things arranged for the kids while I'm gone. I am such a mixture of excited and nervous, but I'm mostly just excited to get there and see all the wonderful things that Queensland has to offer!
I can't wait to share this trip with all of you! A Quick List of Travel Photography Tips

When we travel we take pictures. Travel and photography just go hand in hand and while capturing the beauty and unique qualities about the places we visit can be exciting, it can also be a little bit daunting. We want to come home with tangible memories of our amazing experiences and to capture the true beauty of the things we see.

Today I want to share a quick list photography tips to help you capture your next travelling adventure. Whether it's somewhere exotic or you're exploring some place closer to home, here are a few simple tips to keep in mind:

Pack lightly. Lugging around a long list of photography equipment can be exhausting and impractical where airline weight and baggage restrictions are concerned. Do you have a favourite go to lens? Bring it and maybe one other with you and make them work for you. You'll be more apt to bring your camera along wherever you go the easier it is to carry.

Capture details about the place you're visiting that make it unique. Create a collection of photos that contrast the differences between the place you're visiting and where you call home. Differences in plant life, local crops, foods, climate, architecture, etc.

Capture the details. Turn your camera away from the easy to spot characteristics of a place and look for more obscure details to photograph. Road signs in different languages, the local people and what they like to do, stores in the area, what a typical street looks like.

Capture a variety of different kinds of photos from close ups to landscapes. Pay close attention to the background of your photos and include information that gives your photos context. Where you were, what the surroundings were like, how the weather was. Closeups are great, but including some of the background scenery tells a story.

Hand the camera over to someone else and get in a shot or two or even give them the job of playing photographer for the day. Capturing the trip from a travel companions perspective can be fun and provides a totally different vantage point.

When travelling, space is always a concern. No room to bring home much in the way of souvenirs or memorabilia? Why not snap a quick picture of those items you wish you could bring home instead.

Think of yourself as the storyteller of your trip. Capture the details of your journey from start to finish. From packing, arriving at your destination, the fun you had while there and your return home.

While capturing a plethora of beautiful photos from your trip is great, don't forget to put the camera away sometimes and soak it all in. Enjoy the details with all of your senses and create memories to attach to your photographs. Taking photos is great but knowing when to put the camera away is great too.

DIY travel notebook with pocket

Just a quick and simple craft share this lovely Friday. I found these darling notebooks at the bookstore the other day and couldn't resist them. Aren't they so sweet? They're relatively small, lightweight and will be perfect to take along on my trip next week!

I want to take a notebook with me to jot down ideas for blog posts, to make notes during our two blogging workshops and to keep track of contact names, important phone numbers and such.

I know I'll have some loose papers that will need a safe place as well, so I added a quick little pocket inside the back cover of one of the notebooks to contain things like:

- a printed copy of my travel insurance policy -

- ticket stubs and other memorabilia from the trip -

- photocopies of important documents -

- anything else I collect that needs a safe place -

I simply found an envelope that fit nicely inside the back cover of my notebook. Added a closure using these instructions and then glued my envelope in the notebook.

Tips for Purchasing Travel Insurance

If you're planning to do some travelling this summer chances are, purchasing travel insurance has crossed your mind. When looking into travel insurance for my upcoming trip to Queensland, Australia I had no idea where to start, but lucky for me, my mom is an insurance agent and she was able to help me get the coverage I needed. You're the best Mom! :)

I don't think I'm alone in feeling a little lost where travel insurance is concerned. It's not something we purchase regularly and there can be so many conditions and different types of policies it's hard to know where to start. For this reason, I had my mom put together a list of things to keep in mind when you're purchasing insurance for your next vacation and I hope you find these tips as helpful as I did.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN PURCHASING TRAVEL INSURANCE

1. Inquire well in advance about travel insurance, especially if you or members of your family have any medical conditions. Medical underwriting, if needed, is a very important aspect of purchasing travel insurance and can take some extra time. Many policies contain a clause that may limit or deny coverage if you have any pre-existing medical conditions. Be sure to let your insurance provider know about any medical information that may impact your coverage.

2. If travelling as a family ask about a family rate. Policies for families are often cheaper. Pricing is also based on client's age, medical history, the length of your trip, the type of coverage you want and also your destination. Typically, rates for travel to the US are the highest because they have the highest medical costs. Worldwide rates are often cheaper. Make sure that if your trip takes you through the United States, even if it is just for a few days, that you have adequate coverage. Usually, a short stay at a US airport as you change flights is covered but you'll want to make sure. Some policies cover up to 2 days maximum in the US, if a worldwide rate is used.

3. Make sure you inquire about any conditions or exclusions and review your policy wording carefully. Most policies contain certain exclusions for expected medical costs ie. for pregnant mothers as they get close to their due date or other planned medical treatment. Be aware of any and all exclusions within your policy before leaving on your trip so there won't be any surprises.

5. If you need coverage for personal items, such as cameras, laptops and other valuable items, make sure that you have coverage through your home or tenants insurance policy as travel insurance does not usually cover these items. Be aware of any limitations for items that are temporarily away from your home and also what deductible your policy carries.

6. Travel insurance does not typically cover vehicles, but you can purchase an extension on your own automobile insurance policy to cover rental vehicles. Purchasing rental car coverage this way is often substantially cheaper than buying coverage through the car rental company. Contact your automobile insurance provider for more information before your trip.

7. Travel insurance policies require that you carry your own health insurance. For example, in Alberta, you must have Alberta Health Care in place in order to qualify for travel insurance coverage.

8. Get it in writing. Make sure that you get a copy of your policy and carry it with you at all times. If you are travelling with others, make sure you give them a copy of your policy with the emergency contact numbers and your policy number so that if you are hurt or unable to communicate that a potential claim can be reported to your insurance company right away. Your travel insurance provider can give you invaluable advice and help if you are faced with a medical emergency while travelling.

Please Note: We reside in Canada and insurance restrictions and policies may vary in your area of the world. This is just some basic information to help get you started. You should discuss all your travel insurance needs with your personal insurance agent.

5 quick tips for the amateur wildlife photographer

Just 14 more days and I'll be boarding a plane on my way to Queensland, Australia! Oh my gosh!
It's still so hard to believe! I'm so excited I can hardly sleep! Just take a look at the amazing itinerary and you'll understand why! :)

Day five of the trip is a choice between the following adventures and I'm still having trouble making up my mind which I'd love more:

-learning ancient art techniques and hunting and gathering skills from local Indigenous tribes
-kayaking along pristine coastline and zipping through the trees in the Daintree rainforest
-coming face to face with Australia’s cute (and not-so-cute) native animals
-taking to the skies, saddling up a wild steed, and finishing off with a trip down the river rapids.

Don't they all sound amazing? What one would you choose?

I can only imagine what exciting things I'll see and experience in Australia, but I know one thing I'm really looking forward to is seeing some of the native animals! When we were living on the island of Sint Eustatius in the Dutch Caribbean just 6 months, as a photographer, the experience was filled with so many amazing photo opportunities!

One of the things I enjoyed photographing the most were the local animals. My kids were fascinated by the wildlife we were able to see and I loved photographing some of the living creatures we came into contact with.

Photographing wildlife is a far cry from the photography work I'm used to. I've had to learn a few things along the way, but it's been so much fun and today I wanted to share five things I've found helpful when it comes to photographing wildlife.

1. Always remember safety first. Animals in nature are wild and unpredictable. Keep your distance, never sacrifice safety to get the shot. Your photography equipment and the noises it makes can startle some animals so be keenly aware of their space and always respect their habitat.

2. When photographing animals in their natural environment you want equipment that will make you less conspicuous. A zoom lens is helpful and while a huge telephoto lens would be great, unless you're planning to get serious about nature photography, it's not entirely necessary. The two zoom lenses I own are a Canon 28-135mm and a Canon 24-70mm and for the limited wildlife photography I've done they work great. There are situations where they aren't quite enough zoom, but I'm just looking to get nice animal photos, not National Geographic grade images, so I'm happy with making the equipment I already have work for me. Using a zoom lens puts a little bit of space between you and your subject making them feel more at ease and allowing you to photograph them unnoticed from a safe distance.

3. Observation + patience are key when it comes to photographing wildlife. Observe where they eat, what time of day they're active or asleep. A little bit of planning and patient observing can go a long way in laying the foundations for a great wildlife photo. Did you notice the cute green lizard in the first photo of this post? It was a few days before I managed to get that shot of him. After watching him over a period of days through my kitchen window I noticed that he liked to come out at a particular time of day when the temperatures were starting to cool down. The next time he appeared I was ready and waiting oh so quietly and I managed to get that shot. As soon as my shutter clicked he was startled and off he went. For the shot of the butterfly above I sat in a grassy field and waited as still as I could for my subject to come to me. It took a while, but just before I was ready to call it quits, this sweet butterfly landed nearby and I was able to get that photo.

4. When photographing animals try to choose backgrounds that make them standout. In these situations you can't pick up your subject and move them to a more ideal location, but with a quick change in vantage point you can also change the background of your image. For the image of the starfish above I first took the photo of my daughter holding it in front of her colourful bathing suit. The starfish was a little lost among the bold colours so by switching to an angle from above the subject I was able to use the neutral sand and water as a backdrop allowing the starfish to really pop. Adjusting your camera angle in even the most subtle way can be the difference between a OK photo and a phenomenal one. Try standing up, laying down, tilting the camera up or down, to the left or to the right. Play around until you find what works.

5. Try telling a story about the subject in your image. Try showcasing the size of the animal you're photographing. To do this you'll need to include something in your photograph that shows size relationship. A tiny caterpillar on a leaf, a big tarantula next to someone's foot. Take images of animals interacting with each other, eating the foods they like to eat, grooming, etc. Images that tell a story about the animal or provide information about its habits, where it lives, etc. are interesting and leave us wanting to learn more about these amazing creatures.

I hope you found these quick tips helpful and that you're feeling super excited about exploring the world of wildlife photography. I know I'm eager to learn even more and I'm really looking forward to photographing some of the amazing creatures in Australia!

There's a certain little four year old in our family who's been dreaming of the day she'd start soccer just like her older siblings and this season her dream came true! She wakes up nearly every morning asking me if today is soccer day, which makes Saturday her favourite day of the week!! Yes, that first photo of Addie girl is a posed one, but that big grin...that's all her. She runs down the field with that smile on her face the whole time and it's too cute for words. :)

The warmer weather has finally arrived here in Canada and we couldn't be more excited! These longer days and the fact that the flip flops have now come out of storage can only mean one thing... summer is officially on its way!

I've been gathering a few simple summer craft ideas to help keep the kids busy this summer and here are 10 projects I thought you might enjoy:

I hope everyone enjoyed their Mother's Day weekend.

It was a pretty quiet one around here. I managed to get a nap after church and it was such a beautiful day we went and enjoyed a picnic together, just me and my kiddos...we sure miss you Daddy!

I even woke up to a homemade Mother's Day breakfast from the kids and it was the cutest thing...

I've been slow to get going this week. I've got so much to do with getting ready to go to Australia in just 17 short days that I don't quite know where to start. Ever have those days/weeks? You've got so much to do, that you just do nothing? ;)

sweet summer fashion from downeast basics

It's just over two weeks until I leave for Queensland, Australia and I'm knee deep in preparations for this once in a lifetime trip! There have been visa applications to fill out and travel insurance to arrange among countless other details, but of course I needed to do a little bit of shopping too! I've found some fun things to take with me on my trip and I can't wait to share them all with you!

I've spotted so many cute summer styles at Downeast Basics and I'm beyond excited to have them sponsoring a portion of my wardrobe for the trip! happy mother's day & the simple things

Being a mom is pretty special.

It's exhausting, stinky, thankless, messy, tiring and a daily test in patience.

But its mostly just special.

As the busy days fly by, I find myself growing more and more thankful for photos I have of me with my children. I can't even put into words what these photos mean to me...they serve as a tangible reminder of the joy that being a mother brings me. Looking past the spilled bowl of cheerios, the sibling squabbles, the inability to have an adult conversation void of interuption and all the daily noise, is sometimes necessary to find that joy..... ;)

...but joy is there.

In every sticky kiss, in each bedtime story, with each I love you and with every squishy hug.

I'm so thankful to be a mom and I'm so thankful for all of the mothers who have influenced my life for good. For my sweet mom, my mother-in-law, my Grandma's, my beautiful sisters in law and to all of you.

This past month I issued the challenge to all the moms out there reading my blog to be brave and step in front of the camera in honour of Mother's Day and I've been so touched by the images that you've shared.

Just look at how beautiful you are. How beautiful motherhood is.

Being a mom is hard stuff, but I for one find comfort in knowing that we're all in this together. Knowing that we all have similar struggles and similar joys along this journey called motherhood. We're united in the love we have for these precious children and as mothers, we share a special connection with one another. I'm thankful for your examples, for the tips and ideas you share with me that help make me a better mom and for the kind comments and emails that you take the time to leave for me. Encouraging and uplifting each other as mothers, wives and women can do so much. :)

this weeks simple thing:

I had the chance to go on a field trip with Emily's class this week and well...I'll admit, I wasn't too excited about it. Arranging someone to watch the little girls for the day and getting everyone out the door by 8:30am was not easy, but somewhere between rushing out the door in the morning and riding the bus home with Emily that afternoon, I realized it was totally worth it. We sat on the bus together on the ride home and just giggled and chatted about the day and it was really nice to spend some one on one time with my sweet girl.

simple mother's day card ideas

With Mother's Day just two short days away I thought I'd share a few simple card ideas with you that you can throw together in a pinch. These cards can be made using paper scraps you have on hand and can be put together in a matter of minutes.

To make my cards I started with a small selection of patterned paper + coordinating card stock. I trimmed my paper to a variety of different lengths and then used my super cool Stampin Up! simply scored scoring tool to score the paper to form the cards. It was the first time I'd tried out this handy tool and I loved it! It made creating straight, crisp folds a breeze.

After I had the base for my cards it was time to embellish them. Using some simple text that I printed at home I created some small pennant flags to attach to my card fronts. Buttons, twine, doilies and a few scraps of patterned paper later and I was done. They aren't elaborate cards but I think they turned out really sweet and will be perfect to give out to the moms + Grandma's this Sunday.

This week's photo tip:

I'm pulling this week's photo tip from the archives. If you've never used the clone tool in photoshop or PSE then you should definitely give it a try, it's a handy little tool! :)

The trick to using the clone stamp to clone out small unwanted background distractions while still retaining a photo that does not looked "cloned" is to use a soft brush when doing your stamping and adjust the opacity of your brush. A hard brush at 100% opacity will create unwanted stamp lines and will not give you a nice blended natural looking stamped area.

To use the clone stamp simply hold down the ALT key while "stamping" the area on your photo you wish to copy. Release the ALT key, move your cursor to the area on your photo you wish to stamp over and stamp. This area will now become covered over with the image that you picked up previously. Continue stamping until you have covered over the area and are happy with the results.

the simple things no. eighty two

this weeks simple things:

We're at my parents farm this weekend and the kids have had lots of fun playing with their cousins despite some icky weather. I think Carson has especially enjoyed playing with his little cousin Jaxson. He's like the little brother he always wanted and being the only two grandsons on my side of the family amidst 7 girls they've realized quickly they're going to have to stick together. ;)

Of course the highlight of any trip to Grandma and Grandpa's farm is getting to go out with Grandpa to feed the cows.

Some people found it humorous that I nearly stepped in a fresh cow pie in my quest for a few photos!

Looking at these pictures brings back so many memories of feeding the cows with my dad in the farm truck lovingly named Old Blue.

It may have been a cold, rainy weekend but we still managed to have a little bit of fun, spend time with family and make some really great memories in the process! :)

Blog makeover by 17th Avenue Design Studio

You may have already noticed, but Simple as That recently got a little makeover thanks to the lovely Kate at 17th Avenue Design Studio!

I'm loving the fresh new look and I hope you are too! We're still working out a few bugs, but please feel free to snoop as much as you want and get to know your way around the new site. :)

Over the next few weeks I'll be updating the tabs above, including my FAQ section. I'll be including what camera equipment I use, links to some of my most read tutorials and if there's anything else you can think of that I should touch on please let me know. :)

As I mentioned, I worked with the talented Kate from 17th Avenue Design Studio for my blog redesign and it was a pleasure to work with her. I went with a custom design package and after communicating with her about what I had in mind she immediately came up with a test design that was almost exactly what I'd envisioned! With just a few more tweaks, we arrived at this final version of the design and I couldn't be more pleased with it!

I'm embracing the camera this week with my sweet Addie girl. She's had a rough go the last couple of weeks with a little backyard accident involving a gate that ripped her big toenail off. It was so sad. :( She's been healing up so quickly and it makes me so happy to see that sweet smile of hers!

I'm super excited to share today's giveaway with you from a fun new company called Camera Coats.

Emily Ashby is the talented lady behind this inventive idea and here is a little bit about her and what Camera Coats are:

In February of 2010 we took a family trip. If you have kids you know how that is...bags, strollers, carseats, blah, blah... Since we were flying, our hands were especially full. I wanted to take my Nikon SLR, but did NOT need another bag to carry onto the plane and didn't want to check my little bundle of joy. (Anyone nodding their head about now?:))

So, I went into problem solving mode. I had made a little fabric bag/holder/protector for my 6 year old's video game and decided my camera was more important...so I threw my camera in it, put it in the diaper backpack, and off we went.

It was life changing I tell you. My camera was protected and I didn't have to haul another bag around! I kept that little cover on my camera (wearing it around my neck) as we went to the beach, the Magic Kingdom, and everywhere else. I was in love. My little "coat" protected my camera from the bumps of crowds, kids spills, sun, rain, snow, sand, and anything else that came my way. My friends wanted one. And thus, began our journey with Camera Coats. We hope you love them as much as we do!

I recently had the chance to test drive one of Emily's cute camera coats {the one pictured below} and I loved it. I shoot with a canon 5D mk II and so I went the PRO size and my camera fit in it nice and snug and when carrying it around with me on my shoulder it felt very padded, safe and easy to access. I found it a really great alternative to carrying my camera around in its bag all the time. It was really quite freeing! :)
