When open enrollment began with the 1998-99 school year, it was designed to allow a student living in one attendance area to go to school in another attendance area without his or her family having to move. Academics was the focus, but over the years, the policy has been used more frequently for athletic reasons. 31 member schools recently petitioned the High School Activities Association to change it's rules stating an athlete must sit out a year of varsity athletics if they open enroll but may compete at the Junior Varsity or lower level. School districts will have 60 days to vote on the matter and return the ballots to the High School Activities Association Office in Pierre. A 60 percent approval rate is needed for the change to go into effect July 1st.

The South Dakota High School Activities Association changed several rules last week at their meeting in Pierre. In Basketball and Volleyball, Class A District tournaments were eliminated beginning in the 2013-14 school year and the Class A school will play in either a 7 or 8 team Region tournament to qualify for the State tournaments. The seeding formula in basketball was changed in Class A and B that varies the points recieved for a win depending on the size of school. In Volleyball, a new 3 colored ball will be used. The Royal blue/gray and white ball from Baden will be used by all schools. In football, the High School Activities Association will now assign all officials for the regular season as well as the post season and beginning in 2013 the first practice for teams that have games during the first weekend of the season can begin on the Thursday of week 6 or August 15th. All other teams may not have their first practice of the season until the follwoing Monday or August 19th. In Gymnastics, Regon Meets have been eliminated at the Class A level with all teams allowed to compete during the first day on team day with a limit of 6 competitors per team. The top 50 percent of competitors on team day would then qualify for the individual day the next day as well as those who qualified during the course of the regular season.

The Pierre Tennis Association will be holding a Tennis Block Party on Saturday, May 5th at the Griffin Park Courts in Pierre from 1 to 4 pm. The public is invited to stop by and aquaint themselves with recreational tennis at anytime during the 3 hours. There will be activities for the entire family with games for young and old. There will be chances to test a new racquet while hitting balls from the ball machine (you choose the speed) and an introduction to the game for those that have not participated in the past. Registration for summer "Kids at the Court" recreation tennis program, adult beginner tennis lessons, and adult leagues will be available at the same time. Free t-shirts will be given to the first 100 youth to register for the "Kids at the Court" summer recreation tennis program. And there will be door prizes given away throughout the day. For more information on the Pierre Tennis Association's Tennis Block Party contact Heather Forney at 605-224-9914.
Oahe Speedway north of Pierre was scheduled to have their first shootout races of the season on Sunday, but a message on the speedway's website noted that while the grinding and polishing of the track was completed the cleanup was not and that the track prep work was taking longer than usual so track officials decided to cancel yesterday's season opening races. While track officials apoligize, they felt that the extra time was needed to do everything right. The scheduled starting weekend for races is now scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, May5th and 6th. Oahe Speedway is located approximatly 14 miles north of Pierre along highway 1806.

Rod's Saturday Sports Post

The Pierre Lady Governor Track and Field team scored 127 points to finish second to champion Sioux Falls Washington at the Pierre Legion Relays Friday. Expanding the ESD Conference was discussed but ESD President and Pierre Riggs High Athletic Director Dan Whalen said that specifics from the meeting were not being disclosed until later today. The Conference invited Harrisburg and Sturgis to become new members last year. Sturgis has since accepted an invitation to the Black Hills Conference. Harrisburg has not yet made a decision to accept or decline. Whalen did note that the addition of a Class 11AAA in football earlier this week by the South Dakota High School Activities Association did not effect the scheduling aspect of the meeting because it does not take effect until 2013. Dues, scheduling, technology, event sites, conference champions and other business issues were also discussed at the annual meeting yesterday.

The South Dakota High School Athletic Directors will be voting on some possible changes in several sports in the state when they meet for their annual convention in Spearfish next week. The Athletic Directors will be voting on two changes in boys and girls basketball. One would be to change the seeding formula in Class A and B basketball and the other would be to eliminate District Tournaments in Class A basketball and go with 8 Region tournaments with two districts comprising of one Region. The winners of the Region tournaments would then advance to the State Tournament beginning in the 2013 and 14 school years. In football, there are recommendations that the South Dakota High School Activities Association assign officials to work all games, regular and post season. The other is that the field for 9 man football can be either 80 or 100 yards in length but the widt of the field will be 40 yards, no matter what length. The Athletic Directors will also be voting on eliminating Region Meets at the Class A level and all teams would qualify for Team Day. All votes taken by the Athletic Directors are non binding and passed along to the High School Activities Association for a final vote on implementation. The annual Spring Convention of the State's AD's begins Wednesday and wraps up Friday in Spearfish.

The Spring Sports season begins today for the Pierre Governor and Lady Governor track and field teams. About 80 members of this year's squad will open the season today in Aberdeen at the John Huth Indoor Track and Field meet being run in the Barnett Center on the campus of Northern State University in Aberdeen. Governor and Lady Governor head coach Misty Larson says that 6 to 8 teams including a team or two from Fargo, North Dakota will be competing the meet. It is scheduled to begin at 4 pm.

A pair of seniors on the Pierre Governor boys basketball team that finished 3rd last weekend at the State AA Boys Basketball tournament have been selected by the Pierre Area Coaches Association as their Riggs High School Co-Athletes of the Week. Both players are seniors who wrapped up their Governor basketball playing career last weekend and were nominated by the Governor basketball coaches. Tetzlaff averaged 9 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists and Berg averaged 8.3 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists during the State AA Boys Basketball Tournament, helping the Govs earn a 3rd place finish. Governor head coach Terry Becker says that Joe and Connor have been instrumental to the success of the boys basketball team all year with their ability to defend the opponent's best players, and their senior leadership will be missed.

Rod's 'Wednesday" Morning Sports Post

Pierre Governor head wrestling coach Ryan Noyes was named the Class A Region 3 Coach of the Year by the South Dakota Wrestling Coaches Association. The board’s action creates a new class called 11AAA conisting of eight schools. They are Sioux Falls Roosevelt, Sioux Falls Lincoln and Sioux Falls Washington along with Rapid City Central and Stevens, Aberdeen Central, Watertown and Brandon Valley. O’Gorman High School in Sioux Falls would be in the newly defined class 11AA along with Pierre. O’Gorman would have the opportunity to petition up into the bigger class. If that happens, Brandon Valley could move down to the 11AA Class.

The Activities Association board also is considering a proposal to move all state tournaments for wrestling, volleyball, and girls and boys basketball to one site starting in 2015-2016. The board of directors listened to a proposal from Executive Director Wayne Carney and the Activities staff recommending Sioux Falls be the host for five state tournaments when the new Events Center is built in Sioux Falls. But Community members from throughout the state's smaller regions were on hand at the meeting to urge the board to maintain the status quo. Carney however feels it's in the state's be st interest to keep all options open. The board eventually decided to present the proposal to member schools at next week's Athletic Directors Conference in Spearfish.

But

Rod's Monday Sports Post

Pierre Governor juniors Lane Severyn and Zach Hansen were named to the All ESD Conference Boys Basketball team named today. Let me know what you think! Is their another team that should have been considered on this list? Let me know.

Number 5

1983 Governor team. Loaded with seniors and led by Mr. Basketball Troy Scheafer, the Governors were looking to repeat as state champions. They were one game away from accomplishing that feat. They were beaten by Sioux Falls Washington in the championship game. Schaefer scored 30 points against Todd County in the Section championship game at Mission. Karl Adam, Chip Clelland, Allen Gordon and Aaron Bowers were the other four starters on the team who also had reserves in John Zimmerman, Joey Hartford, Norm Lingle and Mark Haigh on the team making it as deep of a team as there was in the state.

Number 4

2001 Governor team. This was DJ Prue's team. Prue, a second year starter was questioned about some of his antics off the court, but on the court, DJ was a good a basketball player as there was. After qualifing for the State AA tournament, Prue hit a shot at the buzzer that beat Mitchell in the opening round. The next night, he scored 29 of the teams 33 points in the second half as the Governor beat Spearfish. But the championship in 2001 went to Sioux Falls Washington once again as they defeated the Governors in the title game. Joe LaFave, Brad Wire and sophomore Pat Anderson were the driving forces behind the team, but it was DJ Prue's team.

Number 3

1979 Governor team. I did not see the 1979 team play as I arrived in Pierre in the summer of that year but I heard alot. Joe Ashley was the big man in the middle who dominated teams all season long and in the state tournament. Tom Burchill was junior starting guard who kept teams honest with his outside shooting. Bob Tinker was another player I heard was an integral part of the squad as was Bob Stally who started on the 79 State Championship team.

Number 2

2006 Governor team. This team did not win a State Championship. They were beaten in the championship game by Sioux Falls O'Gorman. It was a game they led for 34 minutes and 58 seconds until O'Gorman took the lead for good with 1:02 left in the 36 minute game. Micheal Tveidt and Sam Willard both went on to Division 1 College basketball careers. Tveidt missed some 10 games that season with an ankle injury. But he played in the State tournament and played big time for the Governors blocking a shot in overtime of the semi finals against Brandon Valley that preserved Pierre's victory. Mike Fisher and 5 other seniors all played their key roles as Pierre recorded a 19-4 season, the second best season record in 35 years of Governor basketball.

Number 1

1982 Governor team. They finished the regular season 17-1 losing only to Bismarck in Bismarck during the course of the regular season. In the post season they defeated Todd County in a semi final game in Pierre that saw senior guard Doug Smith steal a pass in the closing seconds and eventually make the fre throws that put Pierre in the championship. They scored 100 points in a single game in the championshp game against Chamberlain that year and then went through the State Tournament unbeaten to win the schools third state title in school history with a 21-1 record. The first state title came in 1944 followed by the second in 1979. Smith and Tony Miller were the starting guards with Troy Schaefer, Chip Clelland and Karl Adam the other starters. A bench that included most of the players of the 1983 team made this Governor team as deep of a squad as ever was put together and one of the all time great teams in South Dakota big school history.
