Indiana Jones Party- Girl Style!

It was definitely a surprise when my daughter decided that for her 7th birthday party she wanted an Indiana Jones themed party. Of all the parties she's chosen, this was the one I think was the most fun, for kids and adults! Definitely one I could get on board with! There are so many ideas and ways to take it! We decided that since the only Indiana Jones she had been exposed to was the ride at Disneyland (the inspiration for the party), that she needed to see the movies as well, so we went to work viewing movies and planning the aspects from each movie that she wanted in the party.

She knew that she wanted to have each kid feel like they were Indiana Jones in an adventure, with a diary like his and a hat. So we planned the party around quests highlighting a special feature from each movie. She had a lot of fun picking ideas and we were able to use most, except the one involving everyone driving jeeps through our house and swinging on a vine from our chandelier!

We decorated the main floor of our house with an immense number of plants and vines. I pretty much cleaned out every fake plant every neighbor of mine had and filled the house so it resembled so many of the jungles in the movies. It turned out pretty cool, and for a January birthday was quite cozy!

We also decked the walls with posters and memorabilia from Indy's travels and movies.

These Sankara stones were so fun to make out of poly foam and even glowed with the candles inside.

I absolutely loved the book I found online, which was a replica of Indy's diary, with pages from his dads grail diary as well. I used the diagrams and drawings to create the diaries for the kids as well

When each of the guests arrived, they were dressed in their hat and whip ( made of braided yarn-much safer with young children than a real whip) and satchel, then their picture was taken to glue inside of their own adventure diary complete with engraved name of "Property of Dr. Jocelyn" or whatever their name was. The kids loved it and it was fun to watch, even though many of them had no idea who Indiana Jones even was.

::Party Activity::

Once they were equipped and ready, they were split into small groups to begin their adventures. They were given the clue to the first quest which was to steal the Golden Idol before the boulder caught them. I couldn't find an affordable idol, so I sprayed a creepy coconut monkey bank gold and used a gray yoga ball for the boulder. The kids did this over and over all night long! We placed the idol half way up the stairs and they took turns trying to steal it and replace it with the bag of rocks

and make it to the bottom before my husband send the ball bouncing down after them. Once they had successfully made it down, they were given the clue to the next quest.

The next quest sent them to our basement which we had lit with flame pots and candles for a cool ambient effect, which served as the stations for the next 4 quests. The first one was blow dart practice., to learn how to escape the natives. Each child was given a blow dart gun made of PVC pipe and feathers and a handful of cotton balls. We set up targets on the wall and they each got to practice their aim. Once each Indy had their chance, they were given the second clue in their quest.

The room was surrounded with boxes labeled to look like they were at one of Dr. Jones' excavation sites. The kids shot at different boxes and targets before being given their next clue.

For target practice, each adventurer was handed an Indy whip, since their yarn whips weren't heavy enough to whip at things, and got to practice using it to knock over stacked Styrofoam cups. This was a fun one to watch, many of them got pretty good at it!

The next clue sent them to Pankot Palace, by way of the snake tunnel, since we all know Indiana Jones LOVED snakes!

Those who made it through the snake tunnel, arrived safely at Pankot Palace where they were met with a nice serving of delectable treats. Monkey Brains (cold spaghetti) or Eyeball Soup (warm water with peeled grapes floating in them). We turned the lights down and only had Christmas lights for lighting, then covered the tops of the bowls so the kids had to feel through the bowls to find a metal key that unlocked the chest containing the next clue.

Once they all had the keys, they received their next clue which told them they had been poisoned at Pankot! It instructed them to go upstairs and find Indiana Jones for the antidote- because who better to save you than the real Indiana Jones! It was fun to watch them all scramble in

excitement up the stairs to find him!
Since I was young, my dad has always had this weathered leather jacket and hat. It is just a regular coat and hat he'd wear, but we always used to say that it was his Indiana Jones outfit, and since he is also an outdoors man, he also had a holster that looked very close to the ensemble as well. We always loved it when he wore it, even though he didn't see the resemblance, haha. As soon as my daughter picked the party theme, I knew we had to have "the real Indiana Jones" at the party, and being a good grandpa I knew he'd say yes! It was really fun to watch the kids so shy around him whispering that he must be the real Indiana Jones at Jocelyn's party, and how lucky she knew him!

Indiana Jones gave them their next clue instructing them to use the Staff of Ra to find the antidote to cure their poisoning and sent them off to find it!

The headpiece for the staff was made on a 3-d printer and attached to a broomstick. I had my friend help with it and she would have the kids hold it and she would point a flashlight the hole in the headpiece shining it a the stack of crates to reveal the location for the antidote and the final clue.

The crates revealed a bag with a bunch of small glass vials with blue antidote (blue Gatorade) and the final clue which instructed them to "choose but choose wisely". They drank their antidote and were cured and sent off to the kitchen to eat after their long quest came to an end!

We finished all the adventuring with our Ark piñata! Since no one makes an Ark of the Covenant as a piñata meant to be smashed to smithereens- and possibly be struck by lightning-haha, we made our own out of a pirates chest piñata and added two paper towel tubes to each side and cherubs on top then sprayed it all gold. it was a much better than the alternative and fun to watch.

::FOOD::

For the food at the party, we decided that since the inspiration for the party from my daughter came from the ride at Disneyland, we would theme the food after the Bengal Barbecue. The kabob restaurant we always eat at that sits right across from the ride entrance.

This was one of the funnest dessert tables I've done for a party, could be because I love the movies, haha not biased at all! My daughter also had fun helping come up with ideas for themed treats. We tried to have each of the movies represented on the dessert table.

and of course, because of the theme, we had to have real bugs to eat and see how brave the parents of our little adventuring guests were. It was great to watch the adults dare each other and their kids to try a real cooked bug as the night went on.

::The Cake::

Saved the best for last. I never thought I'd see the day when my 7 year old daughter who loves playing dress up and tea party, would tell me that she wanted a Snake for a cake at her birthday party. But since Indiana Jones hates snakes, it seemed like a good thing for the mini Indy's to have to overcome in order to eat their party cake! It was my first time making a snake cake, and it was definitely a new feat to try and get it to stay put together, but I loved how it turned out and the birthday girl was in heaven, which is the best part!

If you have a little adventurer, I highly recommend an Indiana Jones Party!! It was a blast to put together and blast to host! I loved receiving text pictures from all the parents of their kids decked out in their whole outfit over the next week everywhere they went!

Wafer Paper Quiling Heart

Quilling is done with paper most of the time, but can also be done on your cake with wafer paper, which is an edible paper made from potato starch. Not tasty per say, but safe to eat and thus a beautiful way to add texture to your cake. Shown here in a heart pattern, but would also be beautiful in a number of other color schemes and shapes. A butterfly, for example would be very dramatic!

Peacock Cake Topper

I absolutely love the colors on the tail of this peacock cake. Animal toppers are such a fun and in this case classy way to top off a cake! The rich blues and purples are the perfect compliment to the semi translucent shimmer of the gelatin this figure is made of.

Would be the perfect way to top any number of cakes!!

Woodland Fairy Tree Stump Cake with Lit Windows

Fairy villages are all the rage right now! Our fairy village is sadly... quite sad. Not much there, but this woodland tree stump cake made it look pretty darn cool when I set it amidst the fellow houses and few fairy things we have, to get my pictures!

It actually almost blended right in with my tree!

Even more fun, is the light up windows and door way, that give the cake a nice glow.

My village may be sad, but this fun tree stump cake sure isn't!

I love finding a cake design that works well in a number of venues, this one does that! I love a good gold accent piece, but really love the way these gold lace flowers look to dress up a cake!

Even more, I love that it looks good and even a little different in many settings!

Hawaiian Plumeria Cake

I love a good frangipani flower! I've tried 3 times now to grow one of my own. The first attempt, my beagle ate. Second died from aphids. My third attempt actually ended up getting 2 new buds and I anticipated flowers from it the next season, until it became infested with
mites during a winter indoors.

I think I many have given up growing my own, but at least I can enjoy them out of gumpaste and make them for cakes once in awhile! This cake was fun because of the new medium that allows you to turn wafer paper into a flexible fun grass skirt!

Emoji Party Cake and Poop Cupcakes

It was so fun to finally make an emoji cake. I have been surprised that I haven't had a request for one yet! It was fun to make this one for my little girls friend, which was the perfect mix of sass and cute!

She picked out the style and emoji for the top, her favorite little cool guy!

The cake was a yummy lemon cake with whipped lemon curd buttercream, which I think is one of my favorite flavors, so bright and cheery in color and taste!

To complete the party, they requested 2 dozen cute little Poop Emoji cupcakes, of course chocolate cupcakes with chocolate ganache frosting. I've got say, I've had plenty of requests for chocolate on chocolate cupcakes that I joked resembled poop, but I have now been able to say I made poop cupcakes intentionally! They were pretty cute!

Baptism cakes are always a fun cake for me to do. The kids are always so excited and I think love the cake even more than a birthday cake. I get a lot of requests for my little figures representing the child and love how excited they are to see themselves on their cake!

This cake was fun to do because the special girl is close to my heart! She loved her cake and her little figure, and it smelled divine! One of my favorite flavor combos- French Vanilla and raspberry!

Special girl Zoey is one of Miss J's very good friends- it was great to share her beautiful day!

My father in law turned the big 80 this year and I was asked to make him a cake for his surprise party, featuring pictures of him. It was fun to look over the many pictures my mother in law gave me, to celebrate his life! It had to be a simple buttercream cake because I only had the evening before to make it, due to a trip we were on, but I loved the simplicity focusing on the photos!

He was even nice enough to let Miss J help to blow out the candles!

M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E!
Who can resist the mouse himself? Nothing beats Mickey Mouse on any given day! I guess I'm a little bias as a Disneyland season pass holder for 6 years now. But really, how can you be in a bad mood when the mouse is involved?!

This is another party I surprisingly haven't had requested by my kids. Surprising, because Minnie Mouse is basically my daughters best friend and favorite person in the world. It was and still is one of her favorite shows, and while she has said she was going to have a clubhouse party many times, she never has stuck with it.

I missed the chance to make this cute little guy a clubhouse birthday cake last year,

Luckily he requested another clubhouse party this year and I got to make his cake! It turned out super cute and whimsical, just like the show!

Finding Nemo 2nd Birthday

As I was putting together this cute cake for my niece, I was thinking back and was actually surprised that between my two kids I have never had a Nemo party!

My kids both watched the movies, but never really loved them enough to want them for a
birthday party.

She had a cute party and enjoyed the cake! It's always fun when their old enough to understand that the cake is just for them!

I especially loved the bright blue against the oranges and greens!

It was a fun theme, I enjoyed making a bright blue colorful cake in the middle of a wintery snowy week!

Little Monster Birthday Party

Little Monster Party Details:

This is what Tya said about styling the party- “I knew exactly what kind of party I wanted to have for my little guy’s 2nd birthday almost as soon as his 1st passed. One of the first things he learned to “say” was to growl like a monster. He thought it was so funny to hear! I wanted to have a little monster party for him, but didn’t want it themed after the Disney themed Monsters. It was actually a lot harder than I expected to find non-Disney-Monster party items, so I ended making it all myself!

When guests arrived, the children were escorted to the side of our yard, to prepare to “become” monsters with our awsome face painters whom I had contacted a few weeks prior and given photos of the invites and types of monster faces I was looking for. They did a fabulous job transforming our little guests into little monsters!

From there, they were free to go enjoy our Little Monster photo booth, complete with props and word signs. It was so much fun watching the kids at that all night and the photos they took were adorable! They loved petting and posing with our life size fuzzy little monsters, that were so easy to make as well!

Our last station allowed them to adopt their own little monster to take home. Since most of our guests were going to be under the age of 10 I wanted it to be an easy (mess free) activity, so I made the monsters and their face accesories a few weeks in advance from brightly colored felt. All they had to do was to pick a blank stuffed monster, pick out eyes or eye, fangs, mouth or horns and then glue them on and let it dry.

From there, our little monsters played and dined on mini monster sliders, and a fun and colorful dessert table of Monster Marshmallow Pops, Orange Dreamsicle Monster-oons (macarons), decorated sugar cookies, Goober dipped pretzel sticks, Chocolate dipped sandwich cookies, Slimer Limer cupcakes and cake pops. I was especially happy with how the cute little monster cake turned out. I accented the cake and the dessert table with little fondant monsters hiding throughout.

One of the things I most loved about this party theme, since it was in June and outside was the opportunity it gave me to incorporate bright bold colors and textures into the decorating of the yard, from paper lanterns strung throughout to the balloons and fur fabric that i wrapped vases for the tables in. Despite it being a very windy and slightly cool day, all the colors still made it look fun and cheery”!

Sweet 16th Elegance

I was thrilled to receive a cake request from an old childhood friend this week, I was even more excited that she wanted a classy but simple sequin cake for her beautiful daughters Sweet 16th birthday party which was a bit of a surprise for the birthday girl!

I loved the colors once it was all put together. I've always loved the pale pinks with gold!

I finished it off by cutting a simple 16 out of gold glitter cardstock for the top. I'm a sucker for simple but elegant touches, and who am I kidding- who doesn't love a little glitter...or alot!

There is something so classic and beautiful about a cake covered in orchids isn't there? I loved the idea of a simple and classic cake for the pre wedding celebrations for the daughter of my friend. Her wedding was to be in Hawaii, but her mom wanted to do something special for her daughter before they all left for trip.

Forgive my kitchen background! There wasn't a chance to photograph it. I love white buttercream cakes with traditional purple orchids, just like the traditional island cakes. It's such an understated but classic look. The cake itself was a french vanilla cake with raspberry filling, to tie it all in i added a touch of clear raspberry oil to the almond buttercream, and can I just tell you how wonderful my kitchen smelled when it was all mixing up? MMMMMMMM

African Serengeti 40th Birthday Cake

I have planned this cake for a few years. My husband spent 2 years in southern Africa in his twenty's serving a religious mission and doing much service work. He has always loved Africa and I've always wanted to give him an African cake. The opportunity came in the perfect way- his surprise 40th birthday party! I had a hard time coming up with a theme for the party, even after a year of trying to plan it, since he is a man of many loves! Finally, after much though, I decided to theme the party around all his favorite things! What better way to represent Africa than the cake?!

He loved, and speaks fondly of the many different Safaris he was able to travel on. He loved the animals and the scenery and the beauty of the colors. So for the cake, I decided to spotlight exactly those things! I couldn't pick a favorite animal pattern, so I chose the cheetah and zebra.

Photos of the African savannah always show the gorgeous red and orange sunsets, so I decided to highlight the sunsets and put the animals and trees in silhouette against the colors!

I wanted a simple but rustic way to separate the tiers so I simply tied some raffia around the bottom two tiers and loved how vibrant the colors turned out! One of my favorite cakes, I'd have to say!

Musically Sweet Violin Cake

This cake was a challenge I was excited to take on! A cake was requested for the 20th anniversary celebration of a violin music studio, and she requested something classic but with a bit of a wow factor and also to include an edible violin on top.

It was fun to brainstorm ideas with her, and we came up with a simple top, highlighting the 3 dimensional violin to go on top, with a few red chocolate flowers to give the cake a pop of color.

For the bottom tier we went with classic white frosting rosettes. I thought it would be a nice element to give the cake some dimension with the mix of fondant and buttercream, plus I decided to airbrush a bit of gold luster dust to give it some shimmer- who doesn't love a little bling!

My favorite was the middle tier, which we decided to wrap in a type of sheet music. To accomplish this, I printed music sheets onto wafer rice paper and shredded it into bits. The process of "gluing" it on allowed for the paper to shrink up a little on the edges, giving it an aged and worn look. It was finished off with a touch of the gold luster dust to match the bottom, giving the bottom two tiers more of an antique finish and spotlighting the violin on the top- fresh white- tier. I loved how the middle "aged" sheet music tier turned out!

The violin was a new project for me, but I have done a handful of wood finishes so that part was fun as always. The struggle once I had the violin pieced together, was what to use for the strings. Sadly, everything edible was either too heavy, or would degrade (in the event of spun sugar) in the fridge which, due to a previously schedule trip, was where the cake would have to stay for 3 days before the event. I ended up using a heavy black thread, which suited it fine. I may have used a dark metal thread if I were to do it over again!

In the end, this was a fun cake to work on and I was more than thrilled to see it come together! Of course, the true verdict is in the clients face, and I was thrilled to see her slightly speechless when she picked it up!! Congrats to the Ruth Godfrey Violin and Viola Studios for a wonderful 20 years!

Rock and Roll Drum Cake

Who doesn't like to rock? This kid loves all things rock music and loves playing his drums! So I was excited to build him a rock and roll drum cake, inspired by a picture given to me from his mom.

The drums were especially fun to create, since I got to break in my new hot wire tool. Have you tried these? They are super fun, and cut through Styrofoam like melted butter!! I could have created a whole band of instruments! Possibilities are endless! They should definitely make a fun toy like this for fondant!!! But until then, I'll settle for a bag full of foam!

Shopkins Birthday Cake

I was excited and a little confused to receive the request for a shopkins cake! I hadn't really heard of them! My daughter had received a few from friends off and on but I really didn't know what they were all about. After seeing how much the birthday girl loved them, I was happy to create one for her from a picture she had seen and loved! It was a very happy colorful cake, and fun for summer!

Minnie Mouse and Donald Duck Cake

Well, I've never thought about them together on a cake before, but here it is! I've done my fair share of Minnie Mouse cakes with the occasional request for Minnie and Mickey. But I wasn't quite sure how to mix Minnie and Donald on a cake when I received this request from a group I am a proud member of called Icing Smiles. It's a great organization that provides cakes families and children with critical illnesses. It has been rewarding to participate when I've been able to.

This sweet cake was for little Capri's 3rd birthday. It was her first birthday to be able to celebrate, since her first 2 were spent in the ICU

Capri's favorite things are Minnie Mouse and Donald Duck. I loved the idea of doing a cake around the character's outfits, since that is what they recognize anyway, right?

and in the end, the colors ended up working really well together!!

I was so excited that Capri recognized it right away and it was so sweet to hear her say "quack quack" in response when she first saw it! Success! It was a joy to create this cake for little Capri and her family. I hope her birthday is as magical as the characters it's based on!

Baby Elephant and Balloon Party

I knew when I bought those cute little elephant cookie cutters last summer, that one day out of the blue I would need them! And, viola! One day- was this weekend! Yippee! It was fun to put together this cute little set of items for the little man's Baby Elephant and Red Balloon 1st birthday party

and added some red ballon sugar cookie pops~

Vintage Pooh Corner Baby's 1st Birthday

I was sooo excited to be asked to do the dessert table for this old fashioned Winnie the Pooh birthday party! I have always wanted to have a reason to do a bee cake or a Pooh party, so YAY!

Who doesn't love a cute beehive cake! This cake was a honey French vanilla cake with a lemon and honey buttercream glaze, topped with royal icing bees EVERYWHERE! I made my bees with royal icing and my food writer edible markers mixed with Americolor black gel paste for a little shine.

I loved how golden the cake came out of the mold. A mold which I, by the way-LOVE! I have used it many times and it is much easier to use than other beehive molds I've used in the past.

Can you even have a honey beehive cake without honey cupcakes? These beauties were a lemon vanilla cupcake with a honey cream cheese frosting. I may or may not have eaten all of the remaining frosting from the bowl and my daughter may have licked it clean.

these beautiful chocolate cupcakes with a marshmallow whipped frosting were done at the clients request and torched to resemble a beehive. I loved the texture and depth they gave to the whole ensemble of desserts with the lightly toasted color, and really- does anything smell better than chocolate and toasted marshmallow?

When having a Pooh party- Tigger tails are a must! I always love seeing these at Disneyland, and had fun singing the "wonderful thing about tiggers" as I dipped and drizzled chocolate everywhere!

Hello Kitty is always a bright and colorful affair! This one was a brightly colored version of my pastel one made last fall. But brighter colors to match the party décor! Kitty is strangely a hard shape for me to cut freehand. Must be the perfectionist in me trying to get both sides perfectly even. I use this super cute and way easy cutter for my "kitty" needs!
