Graphics make a great draw for your site. However, finding good graphics to use can sometimes be a problem. If you've taken a photo yourself or created some graphics, you can use them with abandon because they are yours. You own the copyright automatically.

That's the crux of the issue: copyright. If you are serious about your business, you do not want to have anyone coming after you for copyright violations. So, if you haven't taken the photos or created the graphics yourself, what do you do?

If you plan to use the graphic long term, the best thing to do is to purchase some royalty free photos or graphics. Royalty is something you pay monthly or annually for the use of some copyrighted material. Royalty free means that you purchase the rights upfront and do not have to pay royalties. But don't let the thought of the cost scare you off from looking at this. Depending on where you go for these graphics, the cost can be as little as a few dollars.

Awhile back, SmashingHub.com put up an article, "25 Best Website Resources of Free Royalty Stock Photos," which has links to these resources. I've used the first one, Stock.xchange, for quite some time. Most of the rest were new to me. You can probably find completely free graphics to use on these sites as most have tons of free ones. But occasionally you'll see one for sale that is exactly what you need. If so, put out a few bucks to get it. Then you'll own the rights to use it for as long as you want and in just about any way you want. (Always check the fine print.)

Frustrated about the copyright issues? Do you feel that you should be able to use anything you find on the web without considering that? Think again. There is a whole field in the law profession that deals specifically with internet law. But think also about the photos you have taken or graphics you have created. As I said above, you automatically own the copyright to those. Would you want just anyone to have the right to drop by your site and use them without notifying you? This law cuts both ways. It not only protects the other guy, it protects you as well.

So, get creative on your own or use someone else's work. Either way, be sure to respect copyright issues.

I published magazines for a living for years and know firsthand how frustrating it can be to find the right royalty free photo and then buy the right to use it. Likewise, I know a bunch of great photographers who have pretty much given up on trying to sell their images because it's just not worth the hassle. What's needed is some sort of market place for stock photos that simple, easy to use, and fair for both buyers and sellers.

That shouldn't be too much to ask, but it's surprisingly difficult to find something like this. The big stock photography sites are geared towards publishers who buy large numbers of photos at a time and do not mind the often-significant charges and fees. Even smaller sites generally try to lock you in with subscriptions. Those can be a good deal, but not if all you need is a photo or two for a web site or a newsletter.

Another problem with conventional stock photo sites is that there is a big overlap. Sometimes it seems they all have the same images! It's frustrating to spend the time searching through multiple sites just to find the same stuff. A photo market, just like a farmers market or a flea market, always has fresh, new products and a wide variety to pick from.

Amazingly, photo markets do exist, and I prefer them to the conventional stock photo places. As a buyer, I appreciate being able to look at pictures from many different professional or semi-professional photographers, or even talented amateurs, when I want to buy an image. How does a photo market work if you want to sell photos? Again, very much like a farmers market where sellers buy space to sell their products. They do that because for small merchants it's cheaper to rent space than have their own store, and the market is where people go to shop. Likewise, for photographers it's usually cheaper to rent space at a photo market where people come to buy photos than to create their own website and then advertise it to generate traffic. How much to vendors pay? That depends on how much space they rent, or rather how many images they want to have for sale at a given time.

The key to a photo market is to keep it simple. To buy a photo you register so the market knows you will respect its terms of use, but you only pay for images you purchase and download. To sell images, you register as a seller and then decide how many pictures you want to have for sale. The rest is between the buyer and the seller. Like in any other market, sellers decide how much they want to charge, and buyers can then decide if they want to pay that price.

A stock photo market is perfect if you need to quickly pick a picture or three for a project, or, as a seller, if you're handy with your camera and want to make same extra money.

An example would be bass fishing. A broad search for the keyword "bass fishing" returns 550,000 global searches and 368,000 local searches per month.

There is definitely enough interest in this topic for deeper exploration, although there is so much competition for that keyword, it'll be practically impossible to rank on the first page of the search engines, so let's "niche" it down a little further.

Looking down the list of keyword suggestions from Google keyword tool, we find the phrase "bass fishing techniques" that shows 18,100 global and 12,100 local searches with very little competition, so that's plenty of interest, and a real possibility of getting a good ranking.

In addition, bass fishermen are extremely passionate about the sport and spend tons of money every year on tackle and gear, so this is a great niche to look at.

Now, the next step is to find a product to offer them.

First, do we want to sell a hard (physical) product such as lures, rods, reels, and other tackle, or do we want to offer them digital products such as ebooks and reports, or maybe videos?

I say start with digital products because it's so much easier to deliver a digital product than a physical one. You have absolutely NO delivery cost either!

Let's head over to ClickBank.com and see if we can find something to offer our friends, the bass fishermen. You'll need to sign up for a free account if you don't have one already, but it's painless, and there are literally thousands of other products in the Marketplace you can promote as an affiliate.

Once you get your account set up, type your main keyword into the search box in the ClickBank Marketplace.

I typed in "bass fishing techniques" and the first product in line is one called "Largemouth Bass Fishing Tips" that sells for $29.95 and pays you 75% commissions or $20.02 in commission per sale. That's not too shabby, so let's go with that for now especially since he's offering a ton of bonuses to go with it; it should be a good seller.

Get your link from ClickBank and get ready to promote! You may want to get a free URL shortening link such as TinyURL or BudURL to not only cloak your link from affiliate commission thieves, but also so you have some click tracking to see how many clicks you get from your promotions.

Now, this is where it really gets interesting. We have a LOT more options for free promotion now than we did back when I started.

There are social networks such as Twitter and Facebook, social bookmarking, as in Squidoo and HubPages, along with press releases, article directories, blogs, and video sharing sites.

Guess what, we're going to use all of those and more. You're going to saturate the internet with your affiliate link, and you know what? It's not going to cost you a penny other than what you already spend for your internet bill every month.

These are all free resources you can use to promote products that also happen to be high traffic sites so it's only a matter of time before you start making sales.

Once you make some money, you can turn to various paid resources to speed up the process, but for now, you'll concentrate on the free ones.

The first thing you want to do now is write short 400-500 word article about bass fishing techniques.

Now, I can hear a lot of you already saying, "Well, I can't write an article!"

I say you can - it just takes a little focus and here's the easy way to do it.

Go to the sales letter for the product and scroll down to the bullet points. These are the main benefits of the product, so you just choose 5-6 of the points, and take each point one at a time and expand on it; fill in the blanks, so to speak.

It won't take long before you've got a 400 - 500 word article. Be sure to include a "resource box" or an "about the author" box at the end of the article with your website link in it which we'll talk about in the next paragraph.

Go to Weebly.com and sign up for a free account and build yourself a free website. They have hundreds of cool templates to choose from, so it's not hard to come up with a great looking site in a few minutes. The content for your homepage will be the article you just wrote and submitted to the article directories. In the body of the article, include your cloaked affiliate link for the product.

Next, search Google for "article directories" without the quotation marks. This will give you a list of all the places you can submit your articles online. The reason you're doing this is because Google and the other search engines crawl these article directory sites several times a day, and they will pick up your link for indexing, so get your article uploaded to several of these directories.

Next, go to Blogger.com and sign up for a free blog. So what is your first post going to be? You guessed it! The article you wrote with a link back to your free Weebly.com website.

You see, you want all these free resources pointing to your website which will then point to your affiliate link for the product. Your website may get picked up and indexed by the search engines, but more importantly, it may get discovered on all these other sites you have links on. The more places you have your website link, the better the chances of it getting clicked on.

Search Google for "top social bookmarking sites" and "top social networking sites" without the quotation marks. Once you get your list, sign up for free accounts at each one and include the link to your website in your profile for each one.

On some of them, you'll have the opportunity to have a "page" or article. This is where you paste the article you wrote.

On sites like Squidoo and Digg, people can rank your site. The better the content in your article, the better your site will be ranked, and more people checking it out, so be sure to write the best article you possibly can.

Now, there's a piece of software installed on practically every computer built since 2002 that's so grossly underused, it's almost a crime, and that's Windows Movie Maker! It's been installed on every Windows computer since the beginning of XP!

You need to make a short video to upload to the various video sharing sites.

This is a lot simpler than you may think. You simply take the article you wrote and go to http://sxc.hu and find some free stock photos that fit the theme of the article.

Open up Windows Movie Maker and paste in a photo and read from the article. You probably need 4-5 photos to make a 2- 3 minute video. Once you get your video finished, search for "video sharing sites" without the quotation marks. When you get a list of the top 15 or 20 free sites, open up accounts with each of them and start uploading your video.

Once you get your video uploaded to as many sites as you can, it's time to start over with a new article and go through the process again.

Using free resources, you won't see money coming in overnight, most likely, but if you stick with it, you could start seeing sales within a few days. It could possibly take a couple of weeks, and you may need to go through the process 2-3 times, but be patient - it will come. It's all a numbers game; the bigger your numbers, the better your chances of making money!

Once you start making money in this niche, find another one and set up the same system and establish another stream of income. After a while, you'll have a passive cash flow that you couldn't stop if you wanted to - true autopilot money, and it didn't cost you a dime up front!

To become a stock photographer you need to be capable of producing a continuous flow of salable pictures of professional quality. It isn't enough that you have taken 10 photos you regard as saleable and of professional quality.

When you start to engage in stock photography you need to have hundreds of really good pictures - as good as the ones you see published in magazines of many kinds. In fact you will need thousands of saleable photos to do well in stock photography - but all coming stock photographers have to start from somewhere - so don't feel turned down by this statement.

The most important is that you are capable of shooting some kinds of photos that are of commercial use and of a competitive quality and creativity.

Saleable photos are the kind that can be used as an illustration for something. It can be very concrete things, but illustrations of conceptual character or moods are often doing better. Lifestyle stock photos are in high demand these years, too.

Each photo should be describable with a rather few labels or keywords to be found in a picture search engine that picks the photos from the picture database and display the results to customers.

When you feel sure you have the right kind of pictures you need to find one or more picture agencies.

An alternative would be that you start your own picture agency and start selling your pictures as stock photos online from your own photo website. This isn't the focus of this article as that will demand that you change your efforts form being a photographer to be a marketer of your pictures - at least partly - and want to cope with the full competition in the stock photo world.

Nowadays there exist a lot of smaller picture agencies and rather few really big agencies. In addition to the professional picture agencies you will find a growing number of so-called micro-stock agencies or micro-stock websites. These are offering photos for very small fees and most of the people who offer their photos through micro stock sites are amateur photographers, though some are very capable photographers.

How stock photography works

The mechanism in stock photography is to deliver your best and most salable photos to be stored in a picture database at a picture agency. You will keep your copyright to your pictures, but you commission the picture agency to give their customers the right to use the pictures after some specific conditions, including paying a fee to the picture agency.

A typical agreement between the photographer and the picture agency will imply that the photographer receives 50% of each 'sold' picture. A better wording would be 'each rented picture ' as the customer will only buy the full right to a picture in very seldom occasions.

In the stock photography world the payment to the picture agency and finally to the photographer is called the royalty. This is the classic model for use of stock photography.

Parallel to this model of so-called licensed stock photos or rights managed model is the model called the model of royalty-free stock photos. In this case the customer buys the right to use the picture to whatever purpose he or she wants. With royalty-free pictures there isn't any reporting to the picture agency about the actual use of the picture and it can be used many times. The drawback of this model for the customer is that a lot of customers might have bought the same picture and used it endless times for different publications. Viewers of the final publications might accordingly not find the pictures as attractive as if they were looking at a publication with new 'fresh' pictures.

The stock photo industry has become a more and more competitive business in the recent decade. Due to Internet and globalization everyone can offer stock photos to everyone.

Being accepted by a picture agency

Your first big challenge will be to be accepted by a stock photo agency. Some picture agencies are general picture agencies - covering all kinds of commercial valuable pictures. Other agencies are specialist agencies - from regional agencies, e.g. Antarctica, to highly specific agencies covering just one topic like car race, birds, wine or business.

Take your time to investigate different options. Be aware of the potential threat to the stock photographers - is the picture agency an economic success? Do photographers complain about not getting their money on time etc.

Be also aware of aspects of exclusivity. Do you have to be 'married' to the picture agency or can you engage in other agencies with other pictures? In all cases you should expect to have each photo (and your similar shots) only at one picture agency.

Concentrate your efforts on one picture agency at a time. Be very, very careful with your first submission of a selection of your photography to be accepted.

Read the submission guidelines very careful and follow ALL specifications. Let other give you critique on your choice of pictures before sending the final edited selection. Response from potential users of stock pictures might be more useful than response from other photographers.

Some types of stock photography are flooded with submissions from photographers, like the fields of nature photography and travel photography. Other fields of photography are higher in demand and often better paid like lifestyle stock photography and business photography.

Model release and property release should be in place before the submission, if needed.

Should Your Dental Practice Use Stock Photos?

It can be tough trying to figure out whether or not you should take advantage of stock photography when you build your website. To most people, stock photography seems like a no-brainer. Royalty-free, no cost (or very little cost) pictures that can be plugged in and forgotten about. Dust your hands off because things are in the bag, right?

Well, not so fast.

There are some distinct advantages and disadvantages to working with stock photography, especially when it comes to dental websites, and it can be important to keep them in mind before you make your decision.

ADVANTAGES

True, stock photos are typically free, with none of the entanglements that come from having to license a photo from somewhere else. And the cost of hiring an actual photographer might not be feasible if your practice is a smaller one.

In fact, a good portion of the people who make use of stock photos are individuals who are just starting out.

Or, maybe your practice isn't quite as photogenic as you would like. Maybe you would like to remodel the front of your building, replace the worn carpet in the waiting room, or do a few odds and ends around the place before you put it up on your site. In that case, stock photos might be the way to go until your practice is presentable.

Going with stock photos gives you a great amount of versatility when it comes to modifying pictures to suit your website. Need to crop a photo? Go for it! Make it black and white? Do it! Add lots of sparkly unicorns and magical elves? Well... maybe you should rethink that one. The point is, you can add to or adjust stock photos to make them work best for you.

And, there is a great diversity to the images out there for free. You can find hundreds of sites that offer giant catalogues of available images. One of the best sites for stock photos (www.istockphoto.com), however, does cost some money, but the quality of these pictures seems to be somewhat better than if you just did a Google image search. You can do a quick search for "dentist" or "nature" to find some suitable photos for your site.

DISADVANTAGES

Of course, finding stock photos is easy. Finding the right stock photos can be hard. Stock photography is a big business, and when you start to look at the wealth of options available, the choices can start to seem overwhelming (and that might be putting it mildly). You may find that sorting through hundreds of thousands of images can be more of a hassle than anything else.

Quality can be an issue, too. You may find that quality images can be hard to come by. A lot of the images on stock sites are done by amateur photographers. That's not to say that people without a lifetime of experience cannot take a good shot, but getting one that is both well-done and suitable for your site? You might have to slog through quite a few pictures.

One of the best ways to really spark your potential clients' interest is to be honest with them. You want them to be able to see your practice for what it is and what it has to offer. Many patients also want to see photos of yourself and your staff to put them more at ease. Making your website more personal with professional photographs of you and your office can make a world of difference.

Let me show you an example of how using stock photography could end up backfiring.

Let's say a potential patient is in need of a root canal and is going to survey her city's local dental websites. She comes to your website first and sees an attractive site, but no photos of your practice, none of your equipment, and none of the staff. Instead she sees generic pictures of people smiling, a close-up of a set of perfect pearly whites, and a medium shot of a man happily brushing his teeth.

Next the potential patient visits your competitor's site. The site is not as attractive as yours, but there are actual pictures of the practice, action shots featuring staff members and several of your competitor pictured with happy patients. The potential patient has a greater chance of going with your competitor because she can actually see what's she's walking into and who will be greeting her there.You might have a better office building, better staff, better technology, better everything compared to your competitor, but the potential patient doesn't know that because you've used stock photos instead.

The Best Free Resources For Web Designers, Part 1

There are thousands of websites that offer free fonts, stock images, and a variety of other tools that can greatly simplify a web designer's everyday tasks. Today, in the first installment of an ongoing series of articles, we'll discuss several resources that can help you create a visually stunning website. These are the same sites we use every time we design a web page.

We recommend starting any new website with a black-and-white sketch of how you would like the site to look. If the site doesn't look good in black-and-white, it probably won't look good in color. An ideal layout should maximize simplicity and functionality while retaining its visual elegance.

The next step is to pick a consistent color scheme for the site. We usually try to pick one that goes with the topic of the web site - for our work on the Lopez Farm Labor Contracting site, we chose a color scheme that one would expect to see on the farm (sky blue, earth tones, and green).

In our opinion, the best tool for picking a color scheme is Color Scheme Designer 3. This site provides a traditional color wheel with presets for traditional color schemes such as complement and triad. You can drag the colors around and the corresponding complementary colors are selected. You can also adjust the colors by brightness and hue, or input an existing color by hex value. The site allows you to output the color scheme to a web page or Photoshop palette.

After your color layout is perfected, the next step is to find some good stock photos for the background if you do not already have one. Again, these photos should be relevant to theme of the site and match the site's color scheme (our Lopez Farm Labor site uses a farm field with a very blue sky as the background). We usually use Stock.xchng to find free stock photos, and move on to Morgue File if we cannot find the right image. Stock.xchng requires a free registration while Morgue File does not. Either way, you'll probably want to crop, resize, and optimize any photos you download for the web if they are going to be used as a background image.

Although not required, you can create eye-catching variety by choosing one or more custom fonts for your site. They can be applied to images with text in them, or to headings or other text in the page if you use CSS3 or sIFR for font replacement (we do not recommend sIFR, as it makes your site less accessible to search engines). Our favorite sites for finding free fonts are Da Font and 1001 Fonts. Both sites offer a variety of different fonts, but some are only free for personal use or have other strings attached, so be sure to check if you plan on using them for a commercial web site. Either way, be sure to pick a font that is consistent with the look and feel of your website.

Stock Photos - Selling and Marketing Your Stock Photo Images

Those who want to enter this field will find that in some respects it is easier than ever (distribution channels with little or no editing and open to everyone and/or self distribution via Internet). Digital cameras offer accelerated learning, much more efficient work-flow, and greatly reduced costs.

While on the one hand there is more competition than ever, on the other there are more buyers than I would ever have thought possible just a few years ago, and there are sites, companies and individuals who give away free stock photos. Swell. But whatever the challenges to making a living with stock, the barriers to entry have never been lower. So how does one get started in stock today?

What to shoot?

In my opinion you're not going to be successful unless you're shooting something you enjoy shooting. The trick is to enjoy photographing images that are wanted and needed in the marketplace. How do I figure out what is needed? I look at images. I look everywhere images are used... the Internet, magazines, book covers, billboards and packaging.

You can log onto iStockphoto and search with ranking based on downloads and see what images are the most popular. The idea isn't to copy anything, for two reasons. One, it won't be you, and two; it won't do as well as the original. Seeing what kinds of images are being used is one part, the next is shooting images that have your own unique viewpoint. If you can shoot images that fill the needs of the market place, and do it in a new and unique way, your way, success is assured...sort of.

Distribution is Key

Distribution is also a key element. You can have the best and most needed images in existence and if no one sees them, the images won't sell. Even ordinary images, if they get a wide enough audience, will sell. So now there is another decision to be made. How do you distribute your stock photos?

A key component in this day and age is your own web site and the time to get it started is now. It is my belief that eventually the biggest market will be the world (as opposed to the current advertising, design and editorial community), and that to access that market you need web representation. Start it now, it takes time, and a lot of it, to get your site ranked highly in the search engines. Another reason to have your work up on your own web site is to promote that work independently of the agencies. On my site I am in the process of putting up all of my images.

The ones that are licensed through agencies such as Blend, Getty, Corbis, Kimball Stock and others are marked as such. When someone is interested in an image they can see exactly where that image can be licensed, whether it is through me, or through one of the agencies representing me. I am counting on increasing my existing agency stock sales through the additional exposure generated by my site.

Right now, however, agency representation is the fastest way to get the most eyeballs of serious buyers onto your work. You have several models to choose from: Rights Managed, Royalty Free, and Micro Stock. In Rights Managed a history of the image's licensing is kept and the price is based on a combination of factors including the industry category, the frequency and size of use, the territory and the degree of exclusiveness.

With Royalty Free the image is licensed and then, with some exceptions, can be used for anything indefinitely. The price is usually determined by file size. Micro stock is the newcomer in which the price is again determined by the size of the files, but at much lower prices in (in the $1.00 to $10.00 range). To choose which licensing model or combination of licensing models to participate in will require additional research. There are a ton of stock forums. You can Google "stock photo forums" and "stock photo blogs" and find a bunch of them.

I currently am favoring the Rights Managed model as I tend to spend more time on each image and look for a higher price point as opposed to the greater volume of sales that is required to earn a good income from the Royalty Free and Micro models. That being said, my second best revenue-generating image over the last six months is an RF image with Blend.

Each model has its challenges. Getting a Rights Managed contract with an agency has become very difficult. But photographers do succeed at doing so...if they have images that the agency thinks brings something new, fresh and saleable to their collection. Again, it has become extremely difficult, but possible, to get a Rights Managed contract with the big agencies.

If you submit your work to an agency and they say no it doesn't mean you should give up...just as you don't expect an Art Director to hire you the first time they see your book. Get feedback, understand what the agency is looking for, and persevere. In my experience, agency representation, combined with hard work and creativity, is definitely a recipe for success.

Royalty Free Agencies are easier to get a contract with, but can also be a challenge. I have a number of friends who have been given contracts with Getty for RF images but not for RM images. I find that strange and really hard to justify, but it is what it is. The return per image in Royalty Free has also been plummeting. With what is certainly perceived as an over supply of images, the agencies are also looking for quality and "freshness" in the work of potential new photographers.

Alamy is an example of an agency that anyone can supply images to. However, the anecdotal evidence I have heard would indicate that earning income through Alamy can be pretty elusive. It is my experience that the easier it is to get a contract from an agency, the less money that agency will bring in for you... go figure!

Then there are the Micros... led by iStockphoto. Micro agencies are communities as well as an outlet for your work; so if your looking for camaraderie and lots of feedback (whereas with agencies like Getty there is pretty much no feed back), then Micros might be right for you.

From my research (I have no direct experience in Micro) it appears that only a very few make significant income from Micro stock. In most cases those who do earn good money have their images represented by at least six Micros... though iStockphoto may be changing that with there new exclusivity program.

Do your homework. Research the agencies thoroughly to find the one or ones that best fit your work. I have work with Blend, Getty, Corbis, Agstock, and Kimball Stock. Blend Images does a terrific job of distributing work with ethnically diverse models, Getty and Corbis are the two top general agencies.

Agstock handles my, well you guessed it, agricultural stock, and Kimball Stock does a great job handling my silly animal pictures within their specialty of Animals and Exotic Cars (kind of a strange niche combination...but hey, it works!). Having a number of agencies also helps me feel a little more secure as I am not relying on just one agency for my income.

In Conclusion

Stock isn't as easy to make a living as it used to be. But there are many who are thriving, and there is still room for success for those who approach it with intelligence, thoroughness, and creativity. Just remember to do your homework, research what images are needed in the market place, and make learning an ongoing process and make informed decisions on distribution.

Shooting stock successfully takes dedication and perseverance, but the rewards are a career that can pay enormously well and opens the door for a unique and exciting lifestyle.

Stock Photos - Royalty Free, Rights Managed Or Something Else?

Looking for a photo for your business? Maybe you need an image for an important national campaign, maybe for a flyer or perhaps a photo to liven up your web site. Whatever you might need a photograph for...there are millions of them out there waiting for you to choose. In the world of stock photography there are three major categories to choose from. You can license images as Rights Managed, Royalty Free or Micro Stock.

Rights Managed images are tracked by the licensing agency. The fee for licensing takes into consideration a number of factors including the size the image will be used, the length of time it will be used, the industry or market it will be used in, whether it will be local, national or even international, and the degree of exclusivity desired. Supposedly the degree of difficulty in producing...or perhaps re-producing...the images is also taken in consideration...but I have never personally seen any evidence of it.

Royalty Free imagery is priced by size...a pricing structure that I find does not really make much sense (a small image used on the internet can have a huge impact and be seen by millions but cost almost nothing)...but there it is. Royalty Free is actually a misnomer...one does pay a royalty...but then one is generally free to use the image indefinitely and pretty much for anything...though there are usually some restrictions. In most cases, if one reads the fine print one will find that it is not permissible to use Royalty Free images to create new stock images...and neither is it permissible to use the images in a way that degrades the model or models in the image.

Micro stock is a new category of stock photographs. Micro Stock came into being with photo-sharing communities that then morphed into stock agencies. Istockphoto is the largest and best known of such agencies...and was recently bought by Getty Images...the largest of all stock agencies. Micro Stock agencies are characterized by images mainly supplied by amateur photographers and pricing in the $1.00 to $5.00 range. I have even seen advertisements by some Micro Stock agencies advertising free stock photos...can't get much lower prices than that!

When deciding whether to choose an image from one or another of these categories of stock agencies there are several factors to take into consideration. Whether or not one needs exclusivity, whether it is important to know who might have used the image before and for what, and price of course.

Let's take a closer look at price first. I have spoken with a number of people who never include Rights Managed images in their stock searches. They believe that Rights Managed images are too expensive. I think this probably shows a lack of understanding of the Rights Managed business model more than any real need to avoid RM images. Rights Managed images can always undercut the prices of Royalty Free! While Royalty Free images have a minimum price, Rights Managed does not...and often are either priced lower than some Royalty Free images or can be a better value. In the meantime...Micro stock prices are the lowest...so if super-low prices are ones most important criteria...Micro Stock might just be the way to go.

I propose that what is most important is not price...but the quality and appropriateness of the image. At one time Royalty Free images were considered of lesser quality than Right Managed stock images...as Micro Stock is currently considered by many to be inferior. The truth is that there are wonderful images in all three models...and any quality differences will continue to narrow over time.

If one does need exclusivity then obviously Rights Managed stock is the only way to go. However, exclusivity is rarely used by most purchasers of stock...it is said that only 1% of images are licensed with exclusivity restrictions. But Rights Managed images do give one the chance to see if any competitors have used the image already.

Another consideration is service. With Rights Managed images the agency will involve a sales person who knows the collection and can offer suggestions and advice to help one get the best image for a given application. This can be important when one considers how difficult it can be to find the perfect image when faced not with a scarcity of images but rather with millions of images. Few people have the time to spend searching through millions of stock images. It is important to consider how important one's time is versus the extra cost of licensing the right stock image.

The often Herculean task of finding the right stock photo is only going to get worse as more and more images find there way into the market place. The floodgates have opened as photo sharing and Micro Stock sites open up the stock world to literally millions of amateur photographers. That isn't to knock amateurs either...with the advent of digital capture and Photoshop, many "amateur" images are the equal of or even better than those shot by professionals. Where professionals do have an edge is in those shots that require special expertise, large budgets, or subject matter not readily available to non-professionals.

When faced with the task of finding the right image for one's needs, I believe it is best not to rule out any category of stock photography. It is important to understand the importance of having the right image and understanding that value outweighs price every time!
