Google raises 5-fold reward for reporting bugs to $5,000

Amid the gloom on the rupee front, here is good news for those web-addicts to make some quick bucks as search giant Google has decided to raise the reward amount it pays to those reporting bugs by five-fold, or up to USD 5,000.
It can be recalled that Google has already paid over USD 2 million in rewards under its 'bug bounty programme' to users who report vulnerabilities in its Chrome browser and operating system.

It can also be noted that Indians were the second biggest recipient by county of a similar anti-bug initiative by Facebook earlier this year.

"We've now paid out in excess of USD 2 million across our security reward initiatives. This includes over USD1 million for the Chromium VRP/Pwnium rewards, and in excess of USD 1 million for the Google Web VRP rewards," Google said in a blogpost.

A bug is an error or defect in software or hardware that causes a programme to malfunction. While bugs can cause software to crash or produce unexpected results, certain defects can be used to gain unauthorised access to systems.

Recently, social networking site Facebook also said it paid over USD 1 million in the last two years to security researchers who report bugs on its website and India was second among recipients by country.

Microsoft has also started a bug bounty programme in June, offering up to USD 100,000 for reporting exploitation techniques against protections built into the latest version of its Windows operating system.

Google, in its post said, bugs previously rewarded at the USD 1,000 level will now be considered for reward at up to USD 5,000.

"We will issue higher rewards for bugs (that) we believe present a more significant threat to user safety, and when the researcher provides an accurate analysis of exploitability and severity," it added.

Since the launch of its Chromium and Google Web Vulnerability Reward Programmes three years ago, Google has rewarded and fixed over 2,000 security bug reports, it said.

Google will also continue to pay previously announced bonuses on top, like those for providing a patch or finding an issue in a critical piece of open source software.

Since the launch of the rewards programme, it has received over 1,500 qualifying vulnerability reports that span across Google's services as well as software written by companies it has acquired.

In June, Google had hiked the amount it pays for cross- site scripting vulnerabilities in Google web properties to USD 7,500 from USD 3,133.7.

It raised the reward for XSS bugs in highly sensitive services like Gmail and Google Wallet to up to USD 5,000, while USD 7,500 will be paid for pointing out significant authentication bypasses/information leaks.

Chris Reynolds, 56, said he was shocked when he received his monthly statement via e-mail from PayPal last week, with an ending balance of USD 92 quadrillion, over a million times richer than the world's richest man, Carlos Slim.

Agartala, May 22, A consumer court in Tripura has ordered Cadbury India Ltd to pay a compensation of Rs.30,000 to a complainant who found an iron pin inside a chocolate bar made by the company, an official said here Wednesday.

"A man purchased a Cadbury chocolate on Dec 16, 2011, for his three-year-old daughter and found an iron pin inside the bar when the girl tried to eat it. Subsequently, he filed a complaint before a consumer forum," a food department official told reporters here.

"After conducting a hearing, the west Tripura district consumer disputes redressal forum last week ordered Cadbury India Ltd to pay a compensation of Rs.30,000 to the complainant within a month."

The forum, which in its judgment said the chocolate was hazardous, also asked the chocolate company to pay Rs.1,000 to the complainant towards the cost of litigation.

PANAJI: The next 'in' feature for your smart phone might very well be gesture-recognition and it is a young Goan who is behind the innovation. The creation is set to make touchscreen technology passe and would allow users to interact with their devices through thin air.

Native of South Goa's Velim, Andrea Colaco, has not only earned a graduate and master's degree, and later earned one of the most-sought after doctorate seats at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute Technology (MIT), but has earlier this month won the MIT $100K entrepreneurship competition for her innovation which provides real-time, millimetre accurate 3D gesture sensing on devices like mobile phones.

"What is the next interface for cellphone devices? It is gesture recognition. Every cellphone-device manufacturer is scrambling to bring gesture-recognition into their devices. This is an immediate and unaddressed market," Andrea said.

The innovation was presented at the competition as '3dim' solution, set up by Andrea with co-founder Ahmed Kirmani. It achieves high-quality 3D sensing by employing patented signal processing methods invented at MIT by the co-founders.

"Now with the prize money, 3dim will go full steam. We will develop the technology for customers-smart-device manufacturers-who have already expressed interest in the product," she said.

The Goan's business idea made the most financial sense for the panel of entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, scientists and industry professionals judging the eight finalists of the over 3,000 participants.

Andrea's success though had seemed certain from the early years. The student of Margao'sFatima Convent High School had ranked second at the Goa board Class X exams in 2001 and two years later topped the Class XII exams with an impressive 96.17%. Her record of cent percent score in physics, chemistry and biology remains unmatched till date.

"The need for power-hungry, specialized hardware has kept such technology from mobile devices-problem that has now been rectified," Colaco, a PhD student at the MIT Media Lab, said during the winning pitch at the competition to a packed auditorium.

She said her prototype only demands a few milliwatts of additional power from the phone-about one-seventh of the amount used by a standard smartphone camera.

"I am thrilled for Andrea and her recent win in the MIT $100k entrepreneurship competition. I had been talking with her over the past few weeks and knew about the preparation involved. While she said her competitors were strong too, I was confident the final would be hers. She has always been an ambitious person with attention to detail," her mother Antonette, a homemaker, said. Andrea's parents are presently based in Doha, Qata, where her father, Aldavid Silverio, is an assistant finance manager with a French company.

Andrea's older sibling Gresner is an IT engineer and is based in Cincinnati USA.

The youngster's passion also lies in promoting hands-on design and prototyping skills in undergraduate programmes in India and she has organized and taught at two such workshops in India, at Pune and New Delhi.

Andrea is a recipient of the Goa scholars award 2010 and has a masters degree in media technology from MIT in 2010, after completing her undergraduate degree programme in electrical and electronics engineering from BITS, Pilani in 2007.

S. Sreesanth has pleaded innocence in the on-going investigations against spot-fixing in the Indian Premier League.

In a statement emailed by his lawyer Rebecca John on Tuesday, Sreesanth said: "I am innocent and have done no wrong. I have never indulged in any spot-fixing. As a cricketer, I have learnt to take knocks along with accolades, in my stride. I recognise that I am going through a tough period in my life. I have utmost faith in our judicial process and I am confident that with time I will be proved innocent, and my honour and dignity will be vindicated and restored."

This is the first statement Sreesanth has made since his arrest last Thursday. Earlier, media sources had reported that the Rajasthan Royals cricketer had confessed to spot-fixing during his interrogation by the police.

VINDOO'S CHENNAI LINK

Vindoo was arrested by Mumbai crime branch officials on Tuesday for his links with betting mafia.

Hindustan Times reported that police said they were investigating whether Vindoo, best known for winning the third season of reality show Bigg Boss, was a dealmaker between cricketers and bookmakers.

Asked at a news conference if Sakshi and others seen with Vindoo would be questioned, Mumbai joint commissioner of police (Crime) Himanshu Roy would only reply that investigations were at a very preliminary stage and that it was too premature to comment.

Police sought his custodial interrogation after Ramesh Vyas, one of the bookies arrested in the scam and currently in police custody, revealed Vindoo's name.

Vindoo, the son of the late Dara Singh, will be produced in a Mumbai lower court on Wednesday. His lawyer Advocate Karan Mehta said outside the Esplanade Magistrate's court, Mumbai, shortly after Vindoo was sent to police custody till May 24, that police had no evidence on the alleged involvement of his client in the scandal.

News channel NDTV quoted sources as saying the police are investigating multiple calls made by the actor to a Chennai number. The calls were made over a period of six months, say sources.

The Mumbai Police says Vindoo's custodial interrogation was needed to establish the chain of people involved in the racket as the actor was not only betting himself but was also aiding the bookies.

With Vindoo's arrest, Mumbai police have sounded the first knock on Bollywood, completing the cricket-underworld-Bollywood triumvirate in the betting and spot fixing scam that has hit the sixth edition of the IPL.

Apart from Vindoo, Mumbai Police on Tuesday also arrested bookie Prem Taneja and hawala operator Alpesh Patel, from whose house the Crime Branch also seized Rs 12.80 million in cash.

Mumbai Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Himanshu Roy said the three accused taken into custody "are linked to those bookies whom we have already arrested and those who are wanted".

Police said they were investigating whether any of the Pakistanis, who were in touch with the arrested bookies, had terror or crime syndicate links.

SREESANTH TO BE QUIZZED FOR FIVE MORE DAYS

A Delhi court on Tuesday extended by five days the police custody of Sreesanth, his Rajasthan Royals teammates Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila and eight bookies for alleged spot fixing in the ongoing Indian Premier League.

Metropolitan Magistrate Saumya Chauhan granted police custody of the players and the bookies till May 26 when Sreesanth along with others were presented in a packed courtroom at the end of their earlier police remand and investigators described the crime as "organised conspiracy".

The accused were using the modus operandi of asking bowlers, who agreed to indulge in spot fixing, to give pre-decided signals with the help of their accessories - like wrist watches, wrist bands, neck chains and towels at the time of starting the over, police said.

Police told the court two mobile phones, bought with spot fixing money, were recovered from Sreesanth's girlfriend from Jaipur.

Sreesanth and 10 others were arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police from the national capital region, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

Police have booked the cricketers under provisions of the Indian Penal Code for criminal breach of trust as they did not play for their team and played for the bookies for their own interest. They were also booked for cheating and criminal conspiracy.

SREESANTH'S SHOPPING SPREE

Sreesanth went on a shopping spree with the money he earned from spot-fixing, buying apparel worth Rs.1.95 lakh for himself and a mobile phone costing over Rs.40,000 for his girlfriend, Delhi Police said on Tuesday.

He wanted to quickly dispose of the money which he got after fixing, a police official told IANS.

Some of the apparel bought by Sreesanth in Mumbai and the Blackberry Z10 phone have been seized, he said.

After Sreesanth told investigators about the purchases from the money he got for spot-fixing, he was taken to Jaipur on Monday evening and brought back to Delhi on Tuesday to be presented in a court.

TEAM OWNER'S RELATIVE UNDER LENS

"The team owner's relative's mobile number has repeatedly shown up in Vindoo's call records, which we've been scanning for the past three days," a top police officer told Times of India.

The officer said that it was too early to say if the team owner was involved in the betting racket. "We have not yet established whether it was just betting or there was fixing too," the official said.

Even if the team owner is not linked directly to any betting or fixing, the fallout of his relative's involvement, should it be established, would be far-reaching for cricket and potentially disastrous for the IPL.

This team has logged the same results for the last one-and-half years as the 1983 team did after winning the World Cup. This happens. When you win something as big as the World Cup, it becomes easy to lose focus and priorities get mixed up.

Yet, this fall from grace is surprising.

With so much professionalism, a bevy of support staff to keep things on track, and the Board backing them to the hilt, this team could have handled it better.

Somehow, I feel the players have become very big over the years, and it seems, from outside, that the Board has become slightly relaxed towards them. Today, the players can do whatever they feel like, and can get away with it. In our time, it wasn't possible, no matter how big a player was.

In the past, the Board and selectors were strong vis-à-vis the players. We had lost just one series, to the West Indies, after winning the World Cup in 1983, and I was sacked as captain. That was necessarily not the right thing to do because chopping and changing at the first sight of trouble isn't the right way to go about it. But at least the selectors then could take a decision.

As a former player, it feels great to see players becoming powerful and earning good money. More money should bring in more dedication, commitment and discipline, not arrogance. Some players have seen and got too much a little too early, and that has sent discipline flying out of the window - from their lives as well as from their game. They just need to look at Rahul Dravid to understand what they could achieve with discipline.

That's not much of a problem in individual sports, but it's extremely bad for team sport. A couple of players with wrong attitude and bad discipline issues could affect the entire team in an adverse manner.

I am not comparing this team to that of 1983 but I must tell them something. When we came into the team, there was a trend of social drinking after the day's play. From the squad of 15, 8-10 would have a drink in the evening. Pretty soon, after we came in, we changed the trend; eight-10 of us would now look for butter milk or something else instead of drinks after the day's play. We made it a sort of rule and worked relentlessly towards achieving better fitness and becoming better players, even though we didn't have enough facilities. This team, too, needs to set some goals and put in the hard yards to achieve them.

Panel set up to beef up rural credit co-ops

The Reserve Bank of India, constituted a committee to suggest ways to strengthen the rural co-operative credit structure.

The panel, headed by Nabard Chairman Prakash Bakshi, will review the existing short-term co-operative credit structure (STCCS), focussing on structural constraints in the rural credit delivery system. It will also explore ways to strengthen the rural co-operative credit architecture. The seven-member panel will make an in-depth analysis of the STCCS, and examine various alternatives with a view to reducing the cost of credit, the RBI said in a release.

It will also look at the feasibility of setting up of a two-tier STCCS as against the existing three-tier structure.

The STCCS targets the credit requirement of the small and marginal farmers in the country.

“The panel will submit its report within three months from the date of its first meeting,” it said.

It will mainly assess the role played by State and district cooperative banks in fulfilling the requirement of agriculture credit.

NBFC-MFI norms modified

All registered non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) intending to convert themselves into non-banking financial company-micro finance institutions (NBFC-MFIs) must seek registration with immediate effect, and, in any case, not later than October 31, the Reserve Bank of India said in a notification.

The NBFCs have to maintain net-owned funds (NOF) at Rs..3 crore by March 31, 2013, and at Rs.5 crore by March 31, 2014, “failing which they must ensure that lending to the micro finance sector, that is, individuals, SHGs or JLGs, which qualify for loans from MFIs, would be restricted to 10 per cent of the total assets,” the RBI said in a notification. The RBI made some modifications in the directions issued on December 2, 2011, to NBFC-MFIs.

In order to provide encouragement to NBFCs operating in the north-eastern region, the minimum NOF is to be maintained at Rs.1 crore by March 31, 2012, and at Rs.2 crore by March 31, 2014.

General Anti Avoidance Rule (GAAR)

The General Anti Avoidance Rule (GAAR)- proposed by the then Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee during the annual budget 2012-13- is anti-tax avoidance rule, drafted by the Union Government of India, which prevents tax evaders, from routing investments through tax havens like Mauritius, Luxemburg, Switzerland.
According to the draft, GAAR will come into effect from 1 April 2013. As per the guidelines, FII not opting for treaty benefits and ready to pay taxes will not come under GAAR, but those who do opt for dual taxation avoidance agreements will come under its purview.
The Union Government was forced to defer the rules until 1 April 2013, as foreign investors had expressed their reservation about the language used in the rules. Investors had maintained that the ambiguous language used in the draft of the GAAR could lead to the misuse of the rule.

Tax Havens:

Tax havens are countries which have low tax regimes which provide individuals and business opportunities of tax avoidance or tax evasion. There are roughly 45 tax havens in the world today. In Indian context, Mauritius is considered to be the most significant tax havens or tax evading route.
In more precise words the Mauritius route can be described as a channel used by individuals and Multi National Companies to evade paying taxes in India. The tax evasion in India through this route is estimated to be in tune with 55 billion dollar, mostly attributed to the loopholes in a bilateral agreement on double taxation.

State Bank of Patiala launched Gold Loan (Swarn Shakti) for Farmers

State Bank of Patiala (SBOP) on 2 July 2012 launched gold loan (Swarn Shakti) for farmers against the security of gold ornaments to provide free loans to the farmers without taking loan on land. It would make farmers to meet their small and long term agricultural needs with crop production, investment and consumption.

The maximum amount of loan is 10 lakh rupees and 30 percent margin will be given by the farmers. The loan for crop production will be charged at 7 percent per year up to 3 lakh rupees. Further, 3 percent interest of financial support will be given to farmers who refund their loans in time. Therefore, the actual rate of interest charged will be 4 percent. The total period to refund the amount will be 36 months counting with harvesting season

United Bank to set up office in Myanmar

United Bank of India has received approval from Central Bank of Myanmar for setting up of a representative office in Yangon. It is the first Indian bank to have presence in the country, said a press statement issued by the bank.

The bank has already received RBI’s approval for opening its representative office in Myanmar, the bank’s Executive Director, Mr Deepak Narang, had said recently. “…Though we will not be able to carry out financial transactions through our representative office, we will get leads which can then be routed into our branches,” he said.

10 EU nations to push for transaction tax

Germany and nine other European Union nations will press ahead with plans to introduce a financial market transaction tax, following failed attempt for an agreement to levy it across the EU.

Finance ministers of the 27-nation EU, who met in Luxembourg on Friday, came to the conclusion that an agreement to impose the tax across the bloc will not be possible in the foreseeable future, German Finance Minister, Mr Wolfgang Schaeuble, told the media after the meeting.

Therefore, 10 nations who are willing to cooperate have decided to move forward by taking the necessary steps on the national level, and to ask the European Commission to draw up legislative proposals to introduce the tax.

Besides Germany, supporters of the tax are Austria, Belgium, France, Portugal, Slovania, Estonia, Greece, Slovakia and Spain. Under the EU rules, the proposed tax can be introduced if at least nine nations support it.

The European Commission estimates that by charging a tax between 0.01 per cent and 0.05 per cent on a broad range of finance market transactions, more than €30 billion could be raised annually.

There have been several unsuccessful attempts in the past to reach an agreement to introduce the tax in the EU as well as at the international level.

Its supporters argue that the tax is necessary to stem excessive speculations in the financial market, to reduce volatility and to involve financial institutions in sharing the costs of future financial bailouts.

The plan is vehemently opposed by Britain and Sweden, which fear that it might lead to an exodus of businesses and financial institutions from Europe and endanger growth.

Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone surviving Pakistani terrorist responsible for the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, was hanged at Pune's Yerawada Jail Wednesday morning, Maharashtra Home Minister R.R. Patil said.

"All the legal procedures in the 26/11 terror attacks case were completed. He was sentenced by the trial court, which was upheld by the Bombay High Court, Supreme Court, and his mercy plea was rejected by the president. Accordingly, Kasab has been hanged this morning at 7.30 a.m. in Yerawada Central Jail," Patil told mediapersons.

Kasab's mercy petition was rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday night. Shortly thereafter, in the dead of the night, Kasab was shifted amid top secrecy and tight security to Pune's high-security Yerawada jail.

London: The cricket ball used in a match where West Indies legend Sir Gary Sobers hit six sixes in one over is to go on sale.

Sobers hit bowler Malcolm Nash for six sixes during the Nottinghamshire vs Glamorgan match in 1968.

The ball signed by the star was presented to Richard Lewis, 17, after he found a ball Sobers hit out of Glamorgan's ground in 1968. It will be sold by Hansons auctioneers in Etwall, Derbys, The Daily Express reports.

Sobers feat was later achieved by Yuvraj Singh who hit Stuart Broad for six sixes in an over that drew parallels with a similar feat by other batsmen - Ravi Shastri against Tilak Raj (Mumbai Vs Baroda in 1985) and Herschelle Gibbs became the first batsman to scores six sixes in an One-Day International (ODI) when he savaged Netherlands' Dan Van Bunge in the World Cup earlier in 2007.

Sobers is widely regarded as one of cricket's greatest ever all-rounders, having excelled in all the essential skills of batting, bowling and fielding.

By an act of Parliament in 1998, Sobers was named as one of the ten National Heroes of Barbados.
